Imagine the heart-stopping fear you feel in a haunted house. The darkness makes you afraid to breathe and is broken by sudden sounds and fleeting flashes of light. Around every corner lurks the usual blood thirsty zombie, but watch out because here it’s not on a track. At Zombie Outbreak Orlando the best of both worlds come true when you merge a haunted house and laser tag. The facility promises zombies that are “live and free roaming….no cardboard cut outs.” Take your pick between a CQB short rifle or M4 rifle and step into a real life zombie outbreak. Your firearms look and function similarly to the actual weapons and you will need them to retake the apocalyptic military base you’re stationed in. It’s a military research lab that took on one too many zombie experiments. It’s the perfect place to practice your headshots on live and interactive targets for the impending outbreak. The cutting edge targets are ideal for checking your accuracy, but move fast or your bite ratio will rise when zombies get too close. If you’re looking for a one of a kind experience and want to go a step further than breakout games, Zombie Outbreak may meet your bloody needs.

We’ve already enjoyed a lot of phenomenal events this year, but I have a feeling there is still much more fun to be had! Check out some of our favorite recaps from May, just in case you missed it! From May 4th-6th, thousands from all over the world came to Orlando to celebrate films, actors and directors that aim to spread the Gospel at the 5th Annual International Christian Film Festival. What began in a small conference room in downtown Orlando with 30 films has now grown to 165 feature and short films, documentaries, and music videos. More than 500 films from 40 countries were submitted for the three-day festival which ended with a star-studded Awards Ceremony at Wyndham Orlando Resort. Based on the beloved novel by Roald Dahl, Matilda The Musical continues to thrill sold-out audiences of all ages on Broadway and in London’s West End. From May 9th-14th, Central Floridians experienced the beloved musical for themselves

The event is 100% unjuried, 100% uncensored, and 100% accessible for artists and audiences alike with 100% of ticket sales given back to the artists. A brand new, free concert series came to the home of the Coca-Cola Orlando Eye on Thursday, May 25th. I-Drive 360 LIVE featured live performances from international and local artists in the courtyard of I-Drive 360 next to the iconic Coca-Cola Orlando Eye. Attendees enjoyed entertainment by on-the-rise musicians and the opportunity to view Orlando from high atop the Coca-Cola Orlando Eye for only $5. An exclusive VIP area was also available to a select number of guests. From May 25th-28th, the Orlando Convention Center was overrun by 100,000 fans of the Southeast’s largest comics, sci-fi, horror, anime and gaming event. Attendees of MegaCon Orlando enjoyed everything from autographs and photos with their favorite celebrities to dressing up as costumed characters, meeting professional comic artists and browsing more than 400,000 sq. ft. of shopping madness. Central Florida’s BBQ Blowout was smokin’ ready for the fifth year of its deliciously fun festival! Held at the Oviedo Mall on May 27th, BBQ Blowout was presented by the Oviedo-Winter Springs Regional Chamber of Commerce, Helpful Hands Inc. and the City of Oviedo. It has quickly become a signature event in the community and always supports a great cause! Event highlights included delicious food from professional BBQ teams, live entertainment, kids area, Perdue’s People’s Choice, and Kid-Que Cooking Competition. The Original Orlando Carnival Association hosted the 30th annual Orlando Carnival on May 28th at McCracken Field at Camping World Stadium. Tosca Reno
Tosca Reno’s Clean Living Experience with Retreats Unlimited By Courtney Caggiano
Sometimes we can’t find the answers we seek if we continue to seek them in the voices of others. Sometimes we can’t hear them until we enter into the silence, and allow the voice within to reveal the answers we’ve had all along. This is the purpose behind Retreats Unlimited’s Clean Living Experience with Tosca Reno, a lifestyle expert and writer-at-heart who believes that our mental and spiritual health begins with finding the courage to step outside of the current of chaos and trust the voice within ourselves—all while learning to hear that voice through a meditative life. As a New York Times best-selling author, certified Nutritional Therapy Practitioner, fitness model and motivational speaker, Tosca has shared her lessons of life change and powerful inspiration with people all over the world, including high-profile celebrities and audiences of Good Morning America. Beneath her accomplishments, Tosca is a woman who has mastered the art of overcoming and has found strength of soul, a strength she believes is possible for anyone in any walk of life to reach.

Now, you have the opportunity to join Tosca on a life-changing journey to detox your body, mind and soul as you ground yourself in the stillness of nature at BG Ocala Ranch. Only an hour outside of Orlando and less than an hour and a half from Tampa lies a hidden escape nestled in the rolling hills of Ocala that invites you to part ways with busyness and simply be at rest. BG Ranch is what may easily become the most sought-after luxury estate in Florida, with sprawling pastures and endless green outlined with a canopy of oak trees that lead to the 10,000-square-foot, eight-bedroom Great House.
Complete with an elegant equestrian experience, BG Ranch creates a lush setting to rejuvenate the senses as you enjoy the finest nature Florida has to offer and the most sophisticated lodgings in town. Combine this with Tosca’s wellness retreat, and you’ll never want to leave this Ocala haven. Upon entering the Great House of the ranch, Tosca greets her guests with warm embraces, eager to encourage them into their clean living journey, on which they will learn the benefits of eating natural, raw and unprocessed foods. For the next four days, they are within reach of their return to a lifestyle rooted in equilibrium
with nature. The focus of Tosca’s retreat is not just to instruct women about how to live and eat holistically, but also to reach women where they are, teach them to understand their inner strength and help them discover personalized pathways of healing. Each morning begins with a brisk walk through the dew-covered hills of the property, along with a half-hour to an hour of sunrise meditation. For those who have never learned the valuable treasures found in a short time of meditation, this activity may seem as simple as taking a relaxing break from a busy day, but Tosca’s revolutionary insight into the practical effects of

meditating completely change one’s mind and body for the better. Meditation provides the foundation for the retreat, as letting go of yourself and making room for vulnerability is the key to a relaxed, purpose-driven lifestyle. Health does not begin with the body; it begins with the mind and soul. Tosca teaches that when we meditate, we transition the mind outside of the limitations, fears, and inhibitions of ourselves and into connection with our true selves, which allows us to tap into our unlimited potential. According to Tosca, when we understand our worth through this potential, we find a desire to take care of our spirits, our bodies, and our future. This is where clean eating and exercise take hold of our lives in an effortless way. After meditation, Tosca guides her guests through a fulfilling day of power-packed exercises, healthy meals and innovative teaching sessions, in which Tosca explains knowledgeable ways to incorporate clean eating and wellness into everyday life. These sessions can be as important as a lesson on the advantages of drinking apple cider vinegar on a daily basis and as exciting as cooking classes demonstrating how to prepare your own clean meal.
20
| ORLANDOSTYLEMAGAZINE.COM
Every breakfast, lunch and dinner on the retreat is made fresh by a culinary expert, using the most natural and organic ingredients available. Dishes like mushroom bolognese with tomato sauce and peppery arugula salad with grilled chicken and pomegranate seeds will entice you to toss your bad eating habits down the kitchen sink. One of the most enlightening parts of the dinner is listening to Tosca discuss the characteristics of the food. Just by spending a meal with her, it’s impossible to leave the table without learning why Himalayan salt is more beneficial than table salt, how to make probiotic-rich “yogurt cheese” in your own kitchen or how to cook glutenfree pasta without having it crumble to pieces. Of course, desserts are still on the menu! Guilt-free decadence in the form of chocolate flourless cake and other treats inspired from Tosca’s own cookbook of clean recipes make the thought of organic eating more delightful than ever before. I was blessed to be a part of Tosca’s wellness retreat, and as a participant I was lucky enough to get a seat at her table during each meal. Although every dinner never failed to amaze my appetite, my favorite course came after the final plate was taken away, when Tosca would ask us a simple question: “What was your triumph today?”
Tosca explains that triumphs are the moments in our day when we conquer personal goals, no matter how small. Some said trying a new workout; others’ triumphs were as simple as being bold enough to take some down time for themselves. My triumph of the day was riding a horse fast enough to secure a steady gallop, and holding onto that gallop as I let go of the saddle, the fear of falling and the uncertainty of tomorrow, and rode to freedom in the presence of only God and the horse beneath me. That’s what Tosca does. She gets you out of yourself. She shows you that all those fears right outside of your heart’s window are actually great opportunities of endless possibilities to be taken confidently before they’re gone. That’s the triumph. Tosca may seem like a heaven-sent heroine of healthy living, but the beginnings of her story show a more insecure woman yearning for a second chance. “The journey for me started about 17 years ago. I was at the time obese and unwell, I weighed over 200 pounds, and I was beginning to experience heart palpitations— my father died early as a result of heart disease—and I was depressed,” she remembers. “One day, I couldn’t walk up the stairs of my own house or take care of my kids, and I just didn’t want to do it anymore.”
TRAVEL ‘N STYLE
If you’re looking for adventure or perhaps a bit of relaxation, horseback riding is just a short walk from the Great House, and the trails take you through the valleys and woods of the aweinspiring horse capital of North America.
At that moment, Tosca knew it was time to make a change. “As it happens so often, ‘when the student is ready, the teacher will come,’ is the saying. I was ready to start working out because I felt that was the way to start getting well. I wanted to lose weight, and I didn’t understand that there were other components to wellness until I met Robert Kennedy and he challenged me to enter a bodybuilding contest, which I did at age 42, and through that preparation I learned how to eat clean, and I healed myself. All the illnesses that I had were gone, I lost a lot of weight; in fact, I looked better than I ever did. I looked younger and felt amazing. I also found my purpose, which was writing and wellness, and that led to having a regular column in Oxygen Magazine, building a following, writing books and the eat clean revolution.” This triumphant lifestyle is what motivates Tosca to encourage others into pursuing the life that is best suited for them, body and soul. The Retreats Unlimited wellness retreat is a chance to begin this pursuit for yourself.
BG Ranch is the perfect location to reserve for your next in-state getaway or event. ONE OUT OF THE ORDINARY ISLAND...
ELEUTHERA The island is divided into two regions, North Eleuthera and South Eleuthera. North Eleuthera has a main airport for commercial arrival but also hosts private aircraft. Some visitors land here and take a short taxi ride to the marina, where they embark on a 17-minute ferry ride to Harbour Island, sometimes called the Martha’s Vineyard of the Bahamas. Quaint B/B’s, little shops, great food and music are what you can find on Harbour Island. Golf carts and bikes are a great from of transportation as you sightsee and sample local flavor.
The Island of Eleuthera is just a short 70-minute flight from Orlando using a Pilatus PC12 Turboprop provided by a private charter operator that flies from ORL. Private air travel allows for convenience and ease when traveling to these beautiful small islands.
Governor’s Harbour at the south end of the island is full of history, first class resort style accommodations and local scenery. It’s a sight not to be missed. The island’s enduring popularity is founded on its tropical greenery stretching out to meet the warm, pink-hued sand beaches it is famous for. Resorts and the warm hospitality housed in the quaint New England architecture of the island’s history add to nature’s palette. The rows of century-old trees border narrow, flower-lined streets should not be missed… The small town is named for its peaceful harbor; its evening sunsets are majestic and local fisherman clean fresh catch there everyday at 3pm. The locals are welcoming and after a few days in Governor’s Harbour, you’ll feel like a local – that is the essence of Eleuthera.
No TSA hassles, valet parking as you drive right up to the airplane, easy boarding and departure. Once you’ve arrived in the Bahamas, customs is quick and your bags are handled by private first class service. Within minutes of landing, you are on your way to your resort destination.
You will become friendly with the folks at da Perk Coffee Shop, the Beach House Restaurant, Governor’s Harbour Bakery and Ronnie’s Bar. And when you want to get away… you can escape it all and spend the day at your favorite deserted world-class beach. Literally. On Eleuthera, it’s rare to see anyone else on the beach.
Eleuthera boasts of blue water, beautiful resorts and uncrowded, secluded beaches. If it’s peacefulness, tropical breezes and history you long for, then head to Eleuthera.
Come find your own stunning stretch of pink sand and turquoise water, and you’ll experience firsthand what makes this island so exceptional.

REGERA This is a milestone achievement for Koenigsegg in many respects: • The Regera is an all-new Koenigsegg, full of groundbreaking technology, including the world’s first Direct Drive system for a production vehicle. • It marks the first time Koenigsegg will build two concurrent models in its Ängelholm production facility. • It caps a year of vast expansion for Koenigsegg Automotive AB. The Regera is a true technical tour-de-force. It is a rolling collection of world firsts and world bests. It combines motorsport-grade battery cells, three powerful electric motors and Koenigsegg’s proven twin-turbo V8 engine to produce a prodigious 1500hp, which is sent to the rear wheels via the first direct drive system ever developed for a series production vehicle: Koenigsegg Direct Drive.
It features the first 800-volt electrical system to ever be used in a production vehicle. This is used to supply power to three electric motors, which, at 670hp, have the highest electric power output ever used in a production hybrid. It is the first production vehicle in the world available with a fully robotised body and the first with a fully stowable, top-mounted rear spoiler for better aerodynamics. The hybrid powertrain in the Regera will propel it from standstill to 300 km/h in 10 seconds - faster than even the extraordinary Koenigsegg One:1 and on to 400km/h in just under 20 seconds, yet another world first for a production car. We would love to tell you it is the world’s first car with a removable roof capable of reaching 400 km/h, but that was actually the Koenigsegg CCXR. In 2008. Such is the history of innovation at Koenigsegg.

WEIRD HEALTH
SYMPTOMS EXPLAINED
We’ve all developed an unusual symptom at some point, which is generally followed by frantic phone calls to friends and family and hours spent online searching for a diagnosis. Even if you’re not a hypochondriac, it’s normal to be weirded out by a bizarre new symptom, especially if you’ve never heard of it before. Because there’s no way to know for sure if your symptom is innocent or a sign of an underlying and potentially serious health condition, it’s wise to visit your GP and get checked out. And don’t worry if your symptom is difficult to explain or embarrassing; your doctor has heard it all. Patrick Neustatter, M.D., author of Managing Your Doctor: The Smart Patient’s Guide to Getting Effective, Affordable Healthcare, says, “Doctors are used to talking about pretty much anything and don’t get embarrassed too easily, and neither should you.” He recommends starting with “this may sound weird” or “I’m embarrassed to tell you” to break the ice. And never hesitate to
By Sandra Ketcham
get a second opinion, especially “if you’re being ignored, pushed too hard toward invasive treatments, or if you’re not getting better.”
ITCHING MOUTH Itching of the mouth or throat is usually caused by oral allergy syndrome, a condition related to pollen allergies. The syndrome, which may also produce lip swelling, typically occurs seconds or minutes after eating raw fruits and vegetables. Avoiding the offending food and taking an antihistamine is all that is necessary to treat this reaction. If you don’t think the itching is triggered by food, oral herpes or oral thrush may be to blame.
FUNNY-COLORED URINE Normal urine color ranges from nearly clear to deep amber, depending on how concentrated it is. So, what does it mean if your urine is raspberry red or bright blue? Chances are, it just means you’ve eaten too many beets, blackberries, or artificiallycolored candies. Some medications can also change the color of your urine. However, red urine can indicate bleeding from a
urinary tract infection, kidney stones, or cancer, and dark urine may mean your liver isn’t working properly.
UNEXPLAINED SUNTAN If your friends and family have been commenting on your lovely bronze glow, but you spend most of your time indoors, it’s time to see your doctor. Darkening of the skin can be caused by several disorders requiring treatment, including Addison’s Disease, which is an endocrine disorder, and hereditary hemochromatosis, a serious condition resulting from an overload of iron in the body. Certain medications can also create an unexplained suntan.
SEX HEADACHES For the really unlucky, orgasms can bring on severe headaches that may last for days. Men are three times more likely to experience these headaches than women, but they are mood killers for all involved. Sex headaches generally aren’t linked to serious medical problems, but they can be caused by a tumor, aneurysm, stroke, or other condition, so make sure you mention them to your doctor.

PERSISTENT HICCUPS Hiccups affect and annoy everyone at some point, but if your hiccups last for days or weeks, it’s time to get help. Some cases of hiccups are the result of benign conditions, such as drinking hot liquids, eating spicy foods, a foreign object touching your eardrum, or phrenic or vagus nerve irritation, but persistent hiccups can point to a serious medical problem. Neck tumors, stroke, and lung or esophageal cancer are possible causes requiring urgent diagnosis and treatment. Pneumonia, liver cancer, and hepatitis can also trigger chronic hiccups, according to the National Organization for Rare Disorders.
ALIEN HANDS Imagine your hand reaching up and rubbing your cheek without your control or consent. Alien Hand Syndrome causes loss of control of the hand and is typically associated with tumors, aneurysms, neurosurgery, and stroke. Patients experiencing this rare and terrifying symptom report seemingly purposeful movement of one of their hands, as though someone else is controlling it.
EYE TWITCHES Those annoying little eye twitches you’ve probably experienced more than a few times are rarely cause for concern. Doctors aren’t sure what triggers them, but they usually affect the upper eyelids and may be associated with stress, fatigue, and use of caffeine. Sometimes, though, eye twitches are linked to more serious conditions, like Parkinson’s disease, dystonia, or Bell’s Palsy. The occasional twitch shouldn’t be a reason for alarm, and it’s unlikely anyone else is aware of your twitch, but if the problem becomes chronic or causes pain, see your doctor.
FEELING DEAD This bizarre symptom is associated with a rare delusional condition called Cotard’s Syndrome. Sufferers believe they have lost organs, blood, body parts, or their soul, and some believe they are actually dead. It’s possibly caused by a malfunction in the fusiform gyrus area of the brain and in the amygdala, an almond-shaped set of neurons responsible for the processing of emotions. The delusion can lead to death if the sufferer believes they no longer require food or can’t be harmed by bullets.
NAIL STREAKS White spots, bruises, and streaks on the nails are all pretty common, so how do you know when to worry? Dark or black streaks tend to prompt the
32
| ORLANDOSTYLEMAGAZINE.COM
most panic, but mild trauma to the nail is usually to blame for these marks. Certain medications, some inflammatory conditions, and endocrine disorders are other potential causes. If you have a personal or family history of melanoma, if the discoloration affects only the thumb, big toe, or index finger, or if the black streak extends into the nail fold, you’ll need a biopsy to rule out subungual melanoma.
TASTE CHANGES A decrease or loss of taste is common in older adults and is a normal part of aging. Certain medications, nutritional deficiencies, minor infections, and cigarette smoking can also affect taste, as can diseases like Alzheimer’s, hepatitis, and oral cancer. Metallic or other strange tastes in the mouth are usually triggered by medication usage, gum disease, tooth decay, infections, pregnancy, and allergies. Rarely, changes in taste can point to something requiring urgent medical attention.
SPEAKING STRANGELY Foreign Accent Syndrome is a rare disorder that causes a sudden change to speech, making the speaker sound like he or she has a “foreign” accent. It is most often induced by a stroke, multiple sclerosis, or a traumatic brain injury, and reported cases around the world include changes from Japanese to Korean, from British to French, and from American English to British English. If you wake up one day and notice you’ve started speaking with a Southern twang or Spanish accent, go straight to the ER.
SLEEP EXPLOSIONS If you’ve ever heard a loud bang—like a gunshot or bomb explosion—during sleep, you may be experiencing Exploding Head Syndrome. The loud bang is not painful, but it may incite extreme fear and confusion, and it tends to occur both when falling asleep and when waking. Females are more at risk than males, according to the American Sleep Association, and as many as 10 percent of the population is affected. There are many theories about what causes Exploding Head Syndrome, including minor temporal lobe seizures, stress, anxiety, impairment in calcium signalling, sudden shifts of middle ear components, and brainstem neuronal dysfunction.

What is it that Shakespeare said? “What’s in a name? That which we call a mushroom by any other name could be so powerfully packed with incredible medicinal properties.” No? Well that’s what he would have said had he known about the powerful healing properties of turkey tail mushrooms. WHAT ARE TURKEY TAIL MUSHROOMS? Turkey tail mushrooms, or Coriolus versicolor, are colorful mushrooms that resemble their namesake, turkey tails, and grow on the side of dead trees and leaves in the forest. You’ve probably seen these fungal friends while hiking, never giving a second glance to the ancient secret weapon to treating the common cold, losing weight, and fighting cancer. The Chinese have used these mushrooms in the form of medicinal tea for centuries in order to boost the immune system, but turkey tail mushrooms are just now becoming popular in the United States. WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS? Turkey tail mushrooms offer a host of benefits, but their main power is in the way they supercharge the immune system. Use these mushrooms when your sick coworker stands a little too close or when flu season comes around to boost your immune system.
Turkey Tail Mushrooms TAKE YOUR IMMUNE SYSTEM ON A (HEALTH) TRIP
By Jordan Phillips
If you are trying to lose weight, turkey tail mushrooms help aid digestion by increasing the amount of good bacteria found in your body. Efficient digestion will not only make you feel better, but it will also help you with your bikini bod. The FDA recently approved clinical testing for patients with advanced prostate cancer to use turkey tail mushrooms in conjunction with their chemotherapy. Given their immune boosting qualities, turkey tail mushrooms are the perfect complement to immune-suppressing chemo drugs. In addition to offering relief from chemotherapy side effects, they may also help patients in their fight against cancer. WHERE CAN YOU GET THEM? Turkey tail mushroom supplements are available in capsule, powder and liquid form and can be found at most health food locations, including Chamberlins and Whole Foods. They are also available online. Because some wild mushrooms are harmful to health, do not go turkey tail hunting on your own. These amazing mushrooms are a natural alternative to traditional medicine, but it’s important to discuss all new supplements with your doctor before use.

FROM WHEELS TO WELLNESS Race car driver Stanton Barrett sits down with Orlando Style Magazine to discuss the power and importance of CBD for athletes in extreme sports
Orlando Style: How did you first learn about and become involved with Ojai Energetics? Stanton Barrett: It was an event of synergy! I am from Bishop, CA, near Mammoth Mountain Ski resort. My grandfather founded and built Mammoth Mountain Ski Resort. On a trip to Mammoth, I met Will Kleidon, founder of Ojai Energetics. I’ve been involved with professional sports and have been supportive of natural ways to improve health, performance and well being in my own life. Becoming involved with Ojai Energetics struck me as a way to help others reach maximum health. OS: What do you know about the science behind CBD? SB: CBD is a vital nutrient for everyday health and wellbeing. Everybody has an endocannabinoid system, but since the government outlawed hemp and cannabis in the early 1900s, our bodies have become CBD deficient. CBD is a critical nutrient for modern society dealing with oxidative stress. While deficiencies of certain vitamins can beget specific conditions (vitamin C and scurvy, vitamin D and rickets), a diet low in CBD can create imbalance in the endocannabinoid system. CBD is known to have medicinal properties, without the psychoactive effects of THC (in other words, you won’t get high when taking it). The endocannabinoid system in our bodies is 36
| ORLANDOSTYLEMAGAZINE.COM
involved in a variety of physiological processes including appetite, pain-sensation, mood and memory – and cannabinoids are necessary nutrients that stabilize that system. While some CBD may be derived from forms of cannabis that contain high amounts of THC, CBD may also be produced from industrial hemp plants that meet the legal standards of 0.3% THC. Ojai Energetics CBD is hemp-derived and contains no more or less than 0.03% THC. CBD is a phytonutrient and is vital to living a long healthy life. OS: I’ve read CBD oil is being used for everything from seizure disorders and fibromyalgia to insomnia. Have you heard stories from anyone--Ojai Energetics customers or personal contacts--about how the oil has been beneficial? SB: CBD is a necessary phytonutrient that supports the body’s endocannabinoid system. I cannot comment directly on the medical effects that cannabinoids have on specific medical conditions. However, research shows how impactful the endocannabinoid system is on the rest of the systems in the body. It affects hormones, digestion, organ and brain function, and even neuro- receptors. Ojai Energetics’ technology is the most effective, ethical and economical way to replenish your systems with cannabinoids and restore balance to the body. OS: Have you used the oil yourself?
SB: When I met Will, I tested CBD with skeptical optimism. Ojai Energetics’ technology has since improved my quality of life significantly, and I owe a great debt to Will for his modern innovations with this ancient root. In addition, it is gratifying to share this natural supplement with people around the world to better their quality of life and health. OS: Is it better to inhale it or ingest it orally? SB: CBD oil is most effective when ingested orally. You fill the dropper and dispense directly into your mouth (under the tongue). If it tastes sweet, that is all you need; if it doesn’t taste sweet, wait one minute and take another full drop. Continue taking full drops until it tastes sweet like honey. The honey taste means you have reached your body’s quota for CBD that day. Some days will require more drops depending on your mental and physical health; for example, if you are sick or extra stressed, you may need more than usual. Ojai Energetics’ proprietary absorption technology allows consumers to feel the positive effects of CBD in less than a minute. This means you may feel immediate relief of discomfort, unbalance and/ or anxiety. When CBD is not water soluble, around 90% of the cannabinoids get destroyed in the liver. Ojai Energetics’ CBD products utilize proprietary technology which encapsulates the full spectrum hemp oil (CBD) in a tiny
water bubble, making it the most bio-available method on the market. This allows 250mg of CBD in Ojai Energetics’ product to feel like the equivalent of over 2500mg of CBD in regular products.
their respective sports. Our CBD is federally legal and has THC at .03%, far below the federal legal limit of .3%. Our CBD is non-psychoactive, which is very important because you won’t get high when taking it.
OS: What sets Super CBD apart from other CBD oils on the market?
On drug tests there is nothing that shows up negative to their testing policies. Our federal law is clear that CBD grown under the farm bill is federally legal, and this nonpsychoactive supplement is legal.
SB: The patented process used in our Super CBD products encapsulates the full spectrum hemp oil (CBD) in a tiny water bubble, making it the most bio-available, safest and quickest absorption method on the market. It allows complete CBD benefits to be rapidly absorbed into the body in less than a minute. OS: Do you have any advice for athletes interested in trying CBD oil? SB: My advice to athletes is to research the benefits of CBD and our patented technology which delivers CBD’s nutrients most effectively. Professional athletes abuse their bodies daily and deplete their physical and mental resources. More than anyone, they are in need of CBD oil to replenish and maintain their bodies. It is scientifically proven that the intake of cannabinoids can only help. Athletes will benefit from our product’s ability to increase focus, maintain and increase flow state and speed up recovery from extreme sporting activities or injuries. To me the most important element of CBD is its effectiveness in reducing pain associated with strenuous activities or excessive exercise. It’s proven to naturally produce endorphins (which allow for better performance) and serotonin (which assists with improvement of sleep and recovery). In the end, CBD simply improves daily body functions and health. CBD is such an exciting phytonutrient and supplement that allows your body to optimize its full potential naturally, and our Super CBD provides it safely and ethically. OS: Are there any concerns about athletes being penalized now or in the future for using CBD oil? SB: Athletes have to conform to drug testing policies implemented in
OS: What’s next on your to-do list? SB: I will continue to search for ways to create a better way of life, healing and health, and educate those who are unaware of the resources of nature and its abundant healing ability. At Ojai Energetics, we aim to empower people to live their healthiest life and embrace creative vision, an ageless mindset and a peaceful world. OS: Is there anything else you’d like our readers to know? SB: I would like readers to know that there are many alternatives to traditional health remedies. As I grow older, I’ve become aware of how deficiencies in the endocannabinoid system can noticeably affect body function and decreasing quality of life. Our water-soluble technology is the most effective and ethical in the world, created using organic capsulation practices without synthetics or chemically modifying the ingredients. We are focused on providing you with the most ethical and proven CBD product in the world. Together with love and effort, we can make a difference without greed as the bottom line. From all of us at Ojai Energetics, we urge you to research nature’s most powerful plant and the technology we have pioneered. We believe you will find the most valuable and influential element nature has to offer. For more information, visit: OjaiEnergetics.com.
HEALTH & BEAUTY
BANISHING BACNE By Rhiannon Bowen
At the first glimmer of summer, Floridians quickly grab their swimsuits and tank tops, but a rainy day isn’t the only thing that causes some to cover-up. Bacne, also known as back acne or body acne, is especially common once temperatures begin to rise and people spend more time sweating in the sun. Like facial acne, bacne is caused by a combination of dirt, oil, and dead skin becoming trapped in pores, causing an inflamed blemish. However, as Lead Esthetician at Winter Park Anti-Aging and Laser Amy Runyan points out, bacne “differs from facial acne in two main ways.” First, the skin on your back is thicker and has larger pores than the skin on your face, making clogged pores more likely. Second, oil-producing glands on the back are more active, so a larger and more stubborn type of acne, known as cystic acne, can develop. Fortunately, Orlando Style is here to help you look your best while flaunting all the hot, summer styles you love. Though we might not see it as often, the skin on our backs, necks, and shoulders needs the same care and consideration as our face, so a medicated body wash is a great place to start. In the shower, use a cleanser containing benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid to soothe inflammation and cut down on bacterial growth. When exercising or spending time outdoors, make sure to wear loose, breathable clothing. Cotton is preferable because it absorbs sweat, wicking it away from your body where it could clog pores. After activity, it is imperative to change out of sweaty clothes and take a shower as soon as possible. If you can’t do either, bring some cleansing wipes to rinse off the affected areas— this will buy you some time until you can hit the shower. And don’t forget to change your sheets! The human body is constantly shedding skin cells, even while we sleep, so it is important to wash and change linens regularly. No matter where acne occurs, everyone agrees on one rule: don’t pick! This is especially true for bacne, since the skin on your back does not regenerate or turnover as often as the skin on your face, making the chances of irritation and scarring much greater. Topical creams containing benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid will kill bacteria, while lotions with alpha or beta-hydroxy acids will exfoliate dead skin cells. Also, because the back is hard to reach, many companies offer these types of products in spray-on formulations. If your bacne problem is far below the skin and seems like a hard knot, you may be dealing with a cyst. In this case, and for those suffering from more serious cases of bacne, you should seek the advice of a dermatologist. You may need prescription medications, extractions, or a chemical peel to clear an unusually stubborn case. Above all, don’t be embarrassed. While it may seem alienating, acne is a familiar foe for most of us. With a little experimenting, and perhaps the help of a professional, you can find a skincare routine that works for you. Plus, even if there are a few spots on your back, nothing shines like confidence. 38

CO2 LASER RESURFACING As we age, our skin starts to lose its elasticity as our collagen begins to break down. Lines deepen and the effects of the sun become more noticeable. To combat these changes and restore a more youthful appearance, there is simply nothing better than a CO2 laser resurfacing treatment. During this treatment, the skin is treated one micro-portion at a time delivering just enough laser energy to vaporize aged and damaged skin while stimulating the growth of new collagen. The result? A dramatic improvement in skin tone, wrinkles and texture.

PAMELA ANDERSON Former Baywatch star Pamela Anderson reportedly suffers from a condition known as eisoptrophobia, which is a fear of mirrors. “I have this phobia—I don’t like mirrors and I don’t watch myself on television,” says Anderson. “If anything comes on, I make them shut it off or I leave the room.”

KATY PERRY Katy Perry’s radiant smile doesn’t come without a lot of work! The singer is so afraid of getting fillings that she brushes her pearly whites six times a day and doesn’t go anywhere without carrying a stash of twenty toothbrushes. From excessive toothbrushing to a phobia of mirrors, you won’t believe the out of the ordinary behaviors of some of Hollywood’s biggest celebrities!
JESSICA SIMPSON In stark contrast, Jessica Simpson only brushes her teeth three times a week! The star regularly flosses and uses mouthwash, but refuses to brush daily because she doesn’t want to ruin the whiteness of her teeth. Another out of the ordinary fact about Simpson is that she is addicted to Nicorette gum, although she has never smoked in her life.
EMINEM It’s perfectly natural to prefer sleeping in the dark, but Eminem takes that to a whole new level. The rapper can only sleep in a completely dark bedroom and requires staff to black out all the windows of his hotel rooms before he checks in.
MARIAH CAREY Before every live performance, Mariah Carey spends 15 hours a day sleeping in a room full of 20 humidifiers. She insists the sauna-like environment helps to preserve her voice. The world-renowned singer also revealed she never gets out of bed before 5pm. Carey prefers to stay awake at night, eat her main meal around 2am, and go to sleep at 7 in the morning.
JANE LYNCH After giving up drinking when she was 31, Jane Lynch picked up a bedtime ritual of swigging bottles of Nyquil syrup before going to sleep. DON’T MISS THE BEAT
ED SHEERAN
by Courtney Caggiano
A few years after breaking into the international music scene with his debut single “A Team,” Ed Sheeran became one of the most recognizable singers of the decade—his hit “Shape of You” was possibly the favorite song of the first half of 2017. It’s easy to think that a guy like Sheeran has it all together, but the British songwriter is far from perfect—even revealing that becoming one of the world’s most famous pop stars brought him very close to losing everything. After months of a non-stop touring schedule, Sheeran’s charm and charisma widely adored in his performances couldn’t make their way off the stage; he was an emotional mess, physically exhausted and searching for a way out. Sheeran turned to alcohol, began to loathe the nightly shows, and even remembers wanting to get off the stage the minute he reached it. This dissonant lifestyle forced Sheeran to find respite from the craziness of being an international hitmaker. In 2016, the overworked Brit took a year off, focusing on the Ed that somehow fell through the cracks of fame. During this much-needed break,
Sheeran traveled all over the world—from Iceland to Italy, Japan, Fiji, and New Zealand— discovering the places around him that he had not known, the places that knew him and his music very well. After experiencing different atmospheres through this exotic exploration, Sheeran discovered the ability to appreciate what he does through a well-formulated perspective, developing a necessary balance to life as a star. It was shortly after this year of adventure that Sheeran released his latest album, Divide, which has reached number one in 95 countries—several of which Sheeran visited on his journey. Divide became the fastest-selling album by a male artist in the United Kingdom, with ever track on the album reaching the top 20 of the UK Singles Chart during the album’s release week. Divide depicts a vulnerable Sheeran, contemplating life through a more meaningful view. The singer recounts his years of youth in the song “Castle on the Hill,” and shares firsthand scenes from his hometown of Framlingham. One of the more personal moments on the album is found in the song “Nancy
Mulligan,” in which Sheeran tells the story of how his grandparents fell in love in Ireland during World War II. Even after hitting rock bottom, Sheeran steadfastly remains one of the biggest selling artists of our time, and his hit songs continue to climb the charts and are constantly in demand on streaming services and digital music platforms. It seems that he’s not going anywhere, especially when Sheeran’s most memorable song, “Thinking out Loud,” has become a standard song for weddings, often used for the first dance. He considers this song an illustration of how his downfall of imperfection is nothing that can’t be overcome. “It’s nice because it kind of immortalizes the song in terms of like… even if I fall out of grace and no one listens to me anymore, there’s couples everywhere that share that song, and that song will always exist in their life, even if it doesn’t exist in the public life.”

IRS & DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE SEEK RECORDS OF OFFSHORE DEBIT CARDS

The Department of Justice announced that it obtained an order authorizing the Internal Revenue Service to serve John Doe summonses to obtain records of U.S. taxpayers who have offshore accounts established by Sovereign Management & Legal LTD (SML), a Panamanian entity. This is part of the continuing effort of the IRS to discover U.S. citizens and residents with undisclosed offshore accounts. It is the government’s belief that debit cards issued by offshore banks are a means by which U.S. taxpayers gain access to offshore accounts in a secretive manner. The IRS uses a John Doe summons to obtain information about possible violations of internal revenue laws by U.S. citizens and residents whose identities are not known. SML has no offices in the United States according to its website, but, apparently, the government believes that it can obtain records by subpoenaing an individual whom it believes has control over the offshore business. When the government obtains records, it can then prosecute the individuals who failed to properly report the offshore accounts and the income earned on those accounts. The government obtained an order from the U.S. District Court in Bozeman, Montana authorizing a John Doe summons to be served upon Mr. Michael Behr of Bozeman, Montana. The John Doe summons seeks information about U.S. taxpayers who may hold offshore accounts during the years 2005 to 2016, established by SML. The government believes that offshore debit cards are used to commit tax evasion by allowing people to obtain access to the offshore funds. The information sought concerns issuance of debit cards known as “Sovereign Gold” cards, by SML. The Justice Department previously obtained a similar order from a Federal Court in New York authorizing the issuance of eight
separate John Doe summonses on bank and other entities for information relating to SML and its customers in the United States. It’s clear that the IRS and DOJ are zeroing in on SML and its customers with offshore accounts and assets. This presents a real risk that individuals dealing with SML may face significant civil and criminal penalties. The failure to report offshore financial accounts in which a person has signatory authority or an equitable interest is a felony and can result in long terms of incarceration. In addition, a civil penalty of 50% of the amount in the offshore accounts can be imposed for each year that the required IRS form (FBAR) reporting the offshore accounts is not filed. There is an alternative to facing criminal prosecution and huge monetary fines. This alternative is called the Offshore Voluntary Disclosure Program (OVDP). By entering and successfully completing the OVDP, the owner of an unreported offshore account avoids criminal prosecution and pays a reduced civil penalty. A person cannot enter the OVDP, however, after the Government, through its efforts in issuing the John Doe summonses, obtains evidence of the unreported offshore accounts. The tracking of debit card activity is just another example of the Government’s tactics to learn of an individual’s financial dealings in its efforts to combat what it perceives to be tax evasion by hiding assets and income offshore.

Animal Law THE LEGAL COMMUNITY IS SLOWLY RECOGNIZING OUR FURRY FRIENDS ARE FAMILY.
60
| ORLANDOSTYLEMAGAZINE.COM
IN THE KNOW
Every month, we discuss legal issues
surrounding current affairs and lifestyle topics that affect our community, friends and family. But what about our furry friends? They, too, are part of our families, are they not? Of course they are, but the law doesn’t truly treat them as such. The law, in fact, is fairly antiquated, and in most circumstances a companion pet will be considered “personal property” or a “chattel” with its value being only what you paid for the animal. How can this be? We now live in a world that has evolved to fully embrace the emotional attachment we establish with our beloved pets, yet theft or loss of a pet only results in an award in the amount of, let’s say, your adoption fee from the shelter? What about the owner’s pain and suffering in a case of gross negligence by a groomer, police officer, neighbor or veterinarian? Unfortunately, the various districts in Florida have differing views on whether or not a plaintiff may be compensated for negligent infliction of emotional distress caused by the untimely loss of a pet. Some districts apply the “impact rule,” which essentially requires that a plaintiff must demonstrate that the emotional distress suffered resulted from some form of physical impact with the plaintiff during the incident. There is an exception to this rule is if psychological trauma or mental distress becomes an actual physical manifestation as a result of the incident, which triggered such trauma or distress, or if psychological trauma or mental distress results from directly seeing or perceiving a close family member injured or killed due to someone’s negligence. The problem here is that the law does not consider pets to be part of our family. Other districts have allowed for recovery of damages for emotional distress without having applied the “impact rule,” and this seems to be the trend. Increasingly juries are awarding (and judges are affirming these awards) substantial damages to pet owners for the loss of pets, and recognizing that animals have much more value than the adoption fee paid to the shelter. A majority of these healthy awards have been for the unreasonable and unfortunate shooting of companion dogs by police officers. While police officers undoubtedly have a duty to protect themselves from attack, often times the trigger is pulled before an officer can make a determination that the dog was just being friendly.
We can at least be thankful that the courts are heading in the right direction. As awful as it may be to think about these things, when visiting your vet, always read the waivers carefully, ask questions and make sure you know who is going to be administering treatments, medications and surgical procedures on your animal. Find out who will be caring for your pet if he or she is staying overnight for treatment, grooming or boarding. Oftentimes veterinarian practices allow interns or non-licensed veterinarians to perform procedures that they may not be entirely familiar with, and you may be able to request your animal be cared for by a specific individual. The standards of care are not scrutinized in veterinarian medicine as they would be with humans in a hospital. Animal law has been slowly evolving and lawyers are happy to take on a variety of different animal related cases. According to the Florida Bar Animal Law Committee, a body of law exists which consists of statutes, rules and case law relating to companion animals, animals used for food, animals used in research and entertainment, and wildlife, domestic relations, landlord/tenant, condominium associations, international and historic animal protection laws, animal cruelty, pet trusts, entertainment and sports law, equine law, agricultural law, health law, and criminal law, among others. Society is more “proanimal” than ever before, but remember, it is truly up to you at the owner to ensure your furry friend lives the safest, happiest and healthiest life possible. And in the words of Bob Barker, “Help control the pet population. Have your pets spayed or neutered!”

Weird Dog Habits
By Hannah Filiatreau
Every dog comes with a few of the standard cute attributes. Who knew we would be so endeared by a simple head tilt? But what about the less talked about and rather head turning habits? Chances are your dog will have one or multiple questionable habits too. Check out a few of the most common strange dog habits and what they really mean about Fido.
EXCESSIVE LICKING Some dogs happen to lather kisses on more than others, maybe even to an unwanted degree. This slobbery habit is an overkill of simple affection. Some dogs may pick up excessive licking by realizing it leads to your affection. Others may do it to complete sensory needs or to continue their primal instinct of grooming and socializing.
FLANK SUCKING Predominate in Doberman, dogs can and do suck on their own skin. This habit is a form of OCD and often becomes repetitive as a coping strategy. It is also usually indicative of anxiety. While seemingly harmless, it can actually lead to hair loss, sores, infections, and behavioral changes. It typically requires medication or therapy to treat.
HOWLING If you know your dog is not a wolf or hybrid, then this habit can seem especially strange. It may be as cute as a puppy finding their bark, but howling can continue up into adult dogs. We have yet to determine exactly why domesticated dogs find howling necessary and rewarding. Derived from primal instincts, some scientists now find it a simple way for dogs to express their presence.
BOOCH SCOOCH Too often than you may like to admit, you have seen this habit being laughed at or called “cute”. It is actually one of the least cute habits, as your dog is in fact scratching its butt on your floor. This action usually means your dog is facing anal gland problems. Or they could just be wiping up. It is often best to take a trip to the vet if this habit is frequent or coincides with a painful or angry expression. CHASING AND SPINNING There are more than enough videos of dogs expending energy in this dizzying way. While chasing their tail or shadow, or even just spinning can be cute, this can turn into a bad habit. Compulsive tail chasing can actually be indicative of a need to scratch, possibly due to anal gland issues or fleas. Besides medical issues, any form of repetitive movement can become compulsive for dogs and could require medication to treat. POOP TREAT Referred to as coprophagy, this is a particularly nasty habit. Many dogs consume their own feces for a variety of reasons. Some may be hungry or could purely enjoy it. Like cats eating grass, it could also be a remedy of some sort, particularly for a lack of protein. In an unlucky case your dog may also see it as fun, especially if you give them good enough reactions.
62
| ORLANDOSTYLEMAGAZINE.COM
HUMPING. ANYTHING AND EVERYTHING. Contrary to popular belief, this habit is typically nonsexual. Even if your dog isn’t fixed, humping can happen more often than we care to admit. While it is embarrassing, you will be happy to know it is usually due to overexcitement or attention seeking. Both are relatively easy to fix by distracting them with treats or simply directing their energy elsewhere. SLEEPY CIRCLES We see this habit played out in movies and our own homes. It can be slightly maddening to watch your dog turn and turn as if it will actually make them any more comfortable. This habit is actually due to wild instincts. Undomesticated dogs and other species are frequently seen circling to stamp down greenery and debris to create a more comfortable spot to rest. INANIMATE FEAR Barking at or running from the vacuum cleaner may appear funny, but continued after lengthy exposure can indicate a bad habit. If your dog regularly expresses fear or dominance towards inanimate objects, then they may have anxiety. This can often be fixed with slowly increased exposure combined with positive reinforcements, like treats or playtime. Sometimes it may require anxiety medication.

In the two years since Downtown Disney rebranded as Disney Springs, its dining options have doubled, and there’s been an obvious effort to elevate their overall quality. Several celebrity chefs have added their touch and their names to new offerings, as with Masaharu Morimoto’s Morimoto Asia, Rick Bayless’ Frontera Cocina, and Chef Art Smith’s Homecomin’. But Paddlefish, one of the true new standouts, doesn’t need a famous name to shine. It occupies the former Fulton’s Crab House, specializing in fresh seafood under the direction of Executive Chef Mark Boor. The restaurant is partly a reimagining of its predecessor, but mostly serves up its own more modern take, with greater emphasis on fish and other shellfish besides crab, as well as some steak, pork, poultry and tofu dishes. Chef Boor’s resume includes highly regarded fine dining establishments around the country, and he headed the kitchen at Fulton’s in its final years. With the transition to Paddlefish, he’s been able to apply his vision and his passion for crafting unique seafood recipes to a new undertaking—one where the freshest sustainably sourced seafood, delivered six days per week, is central. Crab is still a star here, and Paddlefish’s crab cake appetizer is a must. Containing minimal filler, nothing comes between you and the large pieces of crab meat and lively seasoning. The cake is topped with remoulade and served over a crispy fried green tomato slice and maque choux, a southern Louisiana classic of roasted corn, roasted red pepper, onion, cream, and hot sauce. Crab fries, blue crab ceviche, stone crab, snow crab, king crab, Low Country boil with snow crab and Alaska boil with Dutch Harbor king and queen crab legs are also available to partake of this coveted crustacean.

Meals at Paddlefish are greatly enhanced by the beautiful atmosphere. Dine al fresco on a deck alongside the water, or in one of the many indoor dining rooms. With clean lines, a yacht-inspired design, and lots of wood, the fully renovated steamboat has the look of a luxury ship without feeling overly nautical. The color palette is a tasteful mix of blues and grays, and each floor has a slightly different layout, décor, and ambiance. Private dining and event spaces and bars on all three levels offer diners a unique experience with each visit, and guests can enjoy the spectacular views and listen to live music on the top deck every Friday and Saturday night. The restaurant seats more than 700 diners without feeling crowded, and the event spaces accommodate 20 to 1,000 guests. With multiple levels and layouts to choose from, Paddlefish is ideal for everything from intimate wedding receptions and rehearsal dinners to corporate lunches and holiday parties. It’s also ideal for your next meal out. So, what are you waiting for?

Central Florida’s craft beer scene has been booming for several years. As both a cause and an effect, new microbreweries have popped up across the region. They’re highlighting how beer can be just as complex as wine, and converting people who thought they didn’t like beer into fans. Among these producers is The Hourglass Brewery, which is establishing itself as an innovative standout with its many world-class beers. “The oldest brewery in Longwood, FL”, Hourglass started in 2012 as a three-barrel operation, serving a few beers in a 12-seat tasting room. Fast forward five years, and this local business has grown into a 10-vat operation with a dedicated barrel aging room, over 30 of its own rotating beverages on tap, a canning line, statewide distribution, and a taproom that holds 240. And there’s an expansion in the works.
Since 2015, Matthew Gemmell and Michael DeLancett have shared billing as head brewers. It’s clear within minutes of conversation that both are well versed in the history, current trends, and future of brewing. They have that ideal combination for artists in any field: respect for the rules and traditions, plus an urge to experiment and push the boundaries of their craft. Having two captains on one ship doesn’t seem to complicate things, either; they offer each other inspiration and, when needed, reality checks in the conception phase. DeLancett and Gemmell use only natural ingredients and are dedicated to finding the perfect one from the right source every time. While they love to buy local, they don’t limit themselves. The two regularly get ingredients from around the world, enjoying the search for that piece of the puzzle that adds the exact flavor or quality they want for each

recipe. They also seek out exotic and unusual ingredients to work with. Each ingredient is treated with utmost respect. The head brewers are involved in every step, including the prep. This may mean peeling, hand-juicing, and drying the rinds of 40 pounds of local honeybell tangelos, as they recently did for their tart, citrusy, smoothly spiced Honeybell Wit, a Belgian-style witbier (wheat beer). Or, it may mean hand-shucking hundreds of oysters and mussels for an oyster stout. This lesser-known variety was developed in the UK in the 1930s and is something you’re unlikely to find elsewhere in Central Florida, or most of the country. If it’s still available when you visit— look for the enticing name “Sexy Grandma”— try it if you like the roasted, slightly bitter flavor of a stout, and wait for the subtle but surprising salinity in the finish. The brewers’ attentiveness pays off in every Hourglass beer (or, at least those that make it to the public). Across a range of styles, each one shows off the rigor of its production and the brewery’s strict standards with its rich color, lively aromas, and nuanced flavors. Hourglass beers tell a sensory story. And storytelling is important to Gemmell and DeLancett, given the sources of their inspiration, the styles they make, and the names they give their creations. The pair likes to make historical recreations and take cues from cultural traditions. For example, there’s often a cream ale on the menu in tribute to a now-obscure style popular in America in the 1800s. It’s a lightly golden, cold-conditioned beer, comparable to a pale lager or kölsch, that doesn’t contain cream. Or, at the time of this writing, Hourglass has a patersbier called 820 A.D. This “father’s beer” is a style consumed by Trappist monks. Known for producing hefty brews with high alcohol content, the monks historically also produced low-gravity patersbiers with less alcohol for themselves, not the public. These offered nourishment without getting them too drunk to
perform their monastic duties. Hourglass’ name, 820 A.D. refers to the year plans were drawn up for the Saint Gall Monastery brewery in modern-day Switzerland, which became a key blueprint for abbey breweries. For a more contemporary reference, there’s DeLancett and Gemmell’s ode to Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, consisting of four sour beers. Violet was their first sour, a blueberry beer named after Violet Beauregarde, the character who morphs into a giant blueberry. It won a gold medal at the 2017 New York International Beer Competition (where two other Hourglass beers won bronze medals, and Hourglass was named “Florida Brewery of the Year”). The line also includes Augustus, a sour amber ale aged for two years in barrels previously used for a chocolate stout; Veruca, a sour nut porter; and Gene, in memory of Gene Wilder. Made with more than a dozen kinds of berries, Gene was originally going to be called Snozzberry, but another brewery beat them to the name. It is fermented in wine barrels with a combination of wine yeast, brewer’s yeast, wild yeast, and souring bacteria, and has a pronounced tartness and Cabernet-like color. Wine lovers should taste this one. Sour beers are an emerging trend domestically, though Belgians have been drinking them for centuries, and all beers were soured to some extent in the days before modern sanitation and temperature controls. Wild yeast and certain bacteria are introduced to create a sour flavor and tart bite. It’s a risky procedure requiring a carefully controlled environment, as these microorganisms are highly resilient, resistant to cleaning, and a threat to all other brews. Plus, there’s a gamble that the beer will not turn out as intended after months or years developing them.
IPAs, Florida weisses, gose, saisons/farmhouse ales, and others with their own blend of wild and traditional yeast. Their facility has a dedicated barrel room and 20-barrel egg oak foeder. That’s a wooden fermenting vessel that facilitates long maturation times, with a valve for easy tasting to monitor progress. All the above barely scratches the surface of the exceptional, varied beers from Hourglass. Visit the taproom, which has a nostalgic geek culture décor, at 480 S. Ronald Reagan Boulevard in Longwood for access to more than 30 of its beers on tap, as well as 16-ounce cans and bottles. A handful of popular beers are available year-round, but most of the selection changes regularly. Flights of five beers are a convenient way to sample more products. You’ll also find some bottled guest beers and ciders, plus wines from Orlando’s Quantum Leap Winery if you’re not a beer drinker. But before you reaffirm that about yourself, give the knowledgeable bartenders a chance to learn about your taste and make a recommendation. You probably just haven’t found your beer yet. It’s out there, and if you’ll find it anywhere, it’ll be at The Hourglass Brewery. 480 S Ronald Reagan Blvd, Longwood, FL 32750

MATT ANDRE While studying Finance at Florida State University, Matt Andre came across an ad for a mortgage broker position in Winter Park. He got his license before he graduated and landed a position with the firm Interlachen Residential Mortgage Company. He had worked at Interlachen for a year and a half when a great opportunity opened up. Family friends Joe and Rob Nunziata founded FBC Mortgage, LLC (“FBC”) in 2005. They knew that Matt would be a good addition to their new company. FBC quickly grew into a national lender working with many of the largest real estate firms and builders in the country. Matt’s dedication to top-class customer service has also been very good for FBC. Mortgage Professional America included Matt in its $150 Million Dollar Club and he’s been cited as a top loan originator by many publications including Broker Magazine, Scotsman Guide and Mortgage Executive Magazine as well as Orlando Business Journal, Orlando Home & Leisure and Orlando Magazine. His reputation and work ethic have made him the preferred lender for many builders and realtors in the Orlando area. I often tell my patients “I know what you are trying to explain, I have experienced it too.” Giving back to the community through volunteering I am a strong believer in giving back to the community. I have been volunteering since I was in college and continue to volunteer today. I have instilled this in my children who often volunteer with me. I have done three medical missions to Jamaica. While in Jamaica I saw patients in a mountain village outside of Ocho Rios. These patients, children and adults, waited for hours to be seen. This was an amazing experience. I got to share this experience with my wife, daughter and niece. My niece is now in medical school. The joy you experience when you are helping someone is inexplicable. The smiles from the children and the appreciation from their parents filled my heart with joy. I have also volunteered locally at Camp Boggy Creek in Eustis. It is either a weekend or weeklong camp for children with chronic illnesses such as asthma. I was the camp physician who was there in case any child needed medical care. My daughter has joined me on two of these occasions. Locally I am also involved with the American Lung Association and am currently a member of the local board. We recently had our annual fundraiser which was a 5k walk/run. My company team and I came in first place in regards to the most donations collected. I was passionate in raising funds because it is a local charity that strives to help us breathe clean air. I am an active member of the Rotary Club of Dr Phillips. They hold several fundraising events throughout the year to help support the local Dr. Phillips schools, library and YMCA. I also support my Alma Mater, the University of South Florida. I am the immediate past president of the local chapter of the Alumni Association. We hold several social events locally to help alumni network and get to know each other. People are often surprised that after Tampa Bay, Central Florida has the second largest USF alumni in the area.

My passions Family is most important to me. I am blessed to have both of my parents still alive, and in town, who are able to sit down with me and have a great conversation about anything from politics to local events. I have a large extended family who are local and find any excuse to get together. I went to high school at Oak Ridge High School in Orlando. I often get together with friends that my wife and I have known since high school. These are the simple things in my life that bring me joy. I also enjoy ‘70s music — including disco, visiting lighthouses, my two toy poodles Mia and Zoe, and of course attending Orlando City Soccer games as well as the Orlando Magic.

CERVENKA
SOUTHPARK DENTAL GROUP Dr. John Cervenka is the founder of Southpark Dental Group where he, his fellow dentists and staff have dedicated over 30 years of care to their patients. A native of Chicago, John found his calling in life at the age of 10 after a visit to his dentist’s office. He planned his high school and college courses with that goal in mind, which led to his admission into the prestigious Loyola Dental School. His pursuit of dentistry extended far beyond a typical dental student: Dr. Cervenka began working with dental suppliers as a way to visit dental offices. He used that as an opportunity to learn best practices from each of them, and upon graduating from Loyola, Dr. Cervenka combined all those best practices into one office when he launched Southpark Dental Group in Orlando. He has maintained that vision for being the best-of-the-best by staying on the cutting edge of technologies, products and practices. He is proud to be one of the first in Orlando to offer implants, Cerec same-day crowns & veneers, and 3D Cone Beam technology for more precise implant treatment plans and placement. What has made Dr. Cervenka a successful dentist is not just his skills in providing the most comprehensive dental treatment to his patients, but by providing that care in an environment that makes patients feel comfortable. That extends to all parts of the experience at Southpark Dental, starting with the friendly and welcoming team. And patients love how he designed the office with the dental chairs facing gardens and koi ponds, which helps provide patients with an extra bit of tranquility. Dr. Cervenka and the Southpark Dental team provide their patients with a treatment plan to meet all of their individual and financial needs. They take the time to make every patient comfortable and build a personal relationship with each. Photo by Steven Miller Photography
John has been recognized by the International Dental Implant Association with a Mastership designation as well as Diplomat status. For many years, Dr. Cervenka has been voted by his peers as one of “Orlando’s Top Dentists”. In 2016, every dentist at Southpark Dental was voted a “Top Dentist” in Orlando, an honor the entire office is proud of. Dr. Cervenka and the team at Southpark Dental routinely provide dental treatment for numerous charitable organizations from the Orlando area. Many of the treatments help the patient enter back into the work force.

DON MCMANUS, ESQ. Don McManus is an employment attorney who uses his experience as a business owner to help businesses and individuals in the Orlando Area. In 2001, Don was the president and CEO of a telecommunications business that was sold to a Fortune 100 company. Shortly after the sale, he moved to Central Florida with his family. Five years ago, he opened Law Offices of Don McManus P.L. in Southwest Orlando. As both a former employer and an employee, Don understands the dayto-day issues that arise within businesses. This understanding, as well as a dedication to building relationships with clients, allows Don to work with both employers and employees in a variety of legal manners. Don works closely with management to provide preventative counseling, as well as advising executives and human resource departments on company policies. While counseling executives and business owners on relevant federal, state and local employment laws, Don takes pride in his ability to give useful, practical advice. Don also strives to enforce employees’ rights and handles a variety of employment matters including wage and hour disputes, overtime pay, age discrimination, gender discrimination, hostile work environments, sexual harassment, and unemployment appeals. Don is admitted to practice in all Florida state courts and the United States District Court for the Middle District of Florida. Making a Difference Shortly after passing the Florida Bar exam in 2011, fellow attorney Dave Rodziewicz, told Don about the pro bono work Dave was doing for a legal clinic in Volusia County, as a way to give back to the community. He suggested that Don contact the clinic and offer his services in the Orlando area. Following Dave’s advice, Don began representing pro bono clients who were having issues with employers. Don recalls with a smile, “one of the first clients that I represented was living in her car because she had been denied unemployment benefits and could not afford to pay rent. I still get a great feeling when I think about the phone call when she told me that the state had deposited several weeks’ worth of payments into her account and she could now rent a new place to live. I think she felt lucky to have my help. I know I felt blessed to be in a position to help her.” Don continues to provide more than a hundred hours of pro bono service each year and has been recognized with several awards for his work. When Don is not in the office, he can be found on the golf course or spending time with his wife of 29 years, Karen, and their two adult children, Michael, who is also an employment attorney, and Katherine, who is a microbiology researcher and graduate student at the University of Miami.

Operationally, all members of Dr. Marcy’s team - students, faculty, staff, and administrators are held accountable to high performance expectations. WPS remains the only Central Florida private school to offer the International Baccalaureate Programme to Juniors and Seniors. This program, which is the backbone of the WPS high school curriculum, opens the doors of college admission to elite colleges and universities, worldwide, for WPS graduates. During Dr. Marcy’s five-year tenure, WPS has achieved rapid enrollment growth, facility additions, and has been accorded recognition as a school of excellence - “Best Private School,” “Best Private School K-8,” “Best Private High School,” and the “No. 1 Choice for Best Private School” by readers across the Central Florida community. Additionally, Dr. Marcy was recognized as the Face of Private Education in 2016. Dr. Marcy models what he preaches. He is goal achievement-oriented; He operates with “an ambitious state of mind.” He is a trusting practitioner of shared, collaborative decision making and the empowerment of others. He believes in the Power of One and the Strength of Team. He champions the celebration of success. Ask anyone who knows him, and you will learn that he is also a crusader who continually seeks to extinguish the notion of “Can’t,” because with Dr. Marcy and his Leadership Team, anything is possible in their work to “touch the future” every day. He remains a superior leader in education, a friend to so many, who, in SY 2017-18, will embark on his final year at WPS before his retirement in June 2018. Dr. Marcy will forever leave behind the legacy of a Difference Maker in Central Florida. To learn more about Windermere Preparatory School, please visit online at: www.windermereprep.com.

MEN WHO MAKE A DIFFERENCE
Travis Williams During his studies at Stetson University College of Law, it became clear to Travis that his area of practice should be trial related. He was awarded the prestigious Victor O. Wehle Trial Advocacy Award which is given to the law school’s most accomplished trial litigator. So, after receiving his law degree in 2000, Travis immediately began his litigation career as a Florida State Prosecutor for Orange and Osceola counties where he gained valuable criminal trial experience as well as a deep compassion for the defendants, their families and the vulnerability they can experience without quality and skilled representation for their court cases. The Law Office of Travis Williams was founded in 2002 because of Travis’ desire to be a steadfast advocate for those facing the uncertainty of a battle in court. Travis is clear that the work he and his staff do is not about his personal success but only about serving their clients well to ensure the very best outcome possible in all cases. He is personally accessible to all clients and he has intentionally kept the firm small to maintain this focus. Evidence of the impact that this caring but aggressive attorney has had on his clients can be found in the winning court results as well as in the piles of notes and cards from clients and their family members with words like: “amazing lawyer but even better person”, “proven case winner that is ethical, honest, aggressive, and professional”, “he did what everyone else was scared to do”, “changed me and my family’s life”, “has heart and truly cares”, “loves his family and fights hard for his clients”, “made a miracle happen”, “best attorney in Orlando for any complicated court case.” When Travis is not helping his clients, he can often be found analyzing teams and running training sessions for the ACYS Girls soccer club team that he coaches. He finds great joy in helping his players to grow in character and to develop their soccer skills. As a youth, he was greatly impacted by his involvement in team sports and by the coaches who encouraged him. As a result, he knew that he would want to coach as an adult. Together, Travis and his family seek out ways in which they can use their gifts and resources to serve. As a family with three young children, it was natural that their service would show up in their schools and in their church, but they have also mentored and helped support other children and families who have been put in their path. Their family has come to greatly respect the work of the Orlando Union Rescue Mission. In 2011, Travis and his wife Francee worked together with another couple to start the Sunday school program at the Orlando Union Rescue Mission. The two couples wanted to involve their children in the efforts so they began the annual Kids Caring for Kids Bake Sale and earnings from the sale are used to help fund the Sunday school classes. The program has grown to include several other faithful volunteers and sponsors.
To find an attorney in Orlando is not a challenge, but to find one with true heart for his clients and their families might take more digging. Travis Williams is a man who is deeply committed to his own family so when clients and their families come to him with life impacting legal needs, he so naturally fights for them in court with the same passion and aggression as if they were a member of his own family. His unique approach has resulted in an extended family of very loyal clients who trust this attorney to do everything possible to represent them well.
