Presidents Report 2022

On behalf of the Board of Directors, I have great pleasure in presenting my 11th report as President to the members of this great club.

After our 16th premiership in our 125th year, we entered this season with high hopes for our league premiership defence. With the majority of our experienced list continuing and the development of our younger players a club priority there was a certain level of confidence that we could cover the loss of Greg Clark and Nick Martin to the AFL.

COVID again had an impact on the WAFL season for the 3rd year running. We were impacted in the early part of the season, just like every other club, with nearly all the players either missing chunks of pre season or games in the first 5 of 6 rounds. Add to that injuries to a number of key players, some unfortunately season long, and we could not recover from a poor season start.

However it was another great WAFL season, there were a number of upsets, the top five teams regularly beat each other and interest in the competition has never been higher.

The announcment from the WAFC that the WAFL grand final could not be held at Optus Stadium and that they would look at other options initially caused quite a storm of criticim. When Leederville Oval was announced as the venue to hold the grand final that criticism rose to another level.

The oval surface has been very poor for a long time and its maintenance again unable to provide a suitable surface as the season wore on. Thankfully, the WAFC took the lead and with both us and East Perth moved off the oval for the last month of the season and frantic efforts finally provided a surface fitting for the last games of the year.

The WAFL Grand Final was an excellent day that was enjoyed by more than the 18,000 crowd attending, the Leederville precinct was pumping and local business had a bumper day.

And what a great way to start the only ever WAFL grand final at Leederville Oval, our Reserves team beating West Perth! It was a remarkable game that had us all applauding, congratulations to Jamie, his coaches and staff and of course to the premiership players and wider squad.

COVID did impact the competition and everyone involved with it – business and the community faced challenges or business boomed. The third season to be disrupted meant plans changed regularity and opportunities had to be grabbed as they presented.

Well done and my thanks to Chayce Creedy who has coached his last season as our very successful Colts coach. His leadership and dedication has been impressive and having Chayce now moving into the senior coaching group will be very beneficial for our senior and developing players.

Our coaching group led by Beau Wardman have been very impressive again and although league success eluded us this year, I have no doubt that Beau is the right man to continue to drive results at the Lions.

Ongoing Sustainability of the Club

Plenty still needs to be done to get us towards an annual breakeven position however our plans are to continually look for new opportunities and non – football income streams and my thanks to our team of Peter Capes, Zac Acott and now Will Rollo for making that possible.

We still need your help, be ambassadors for the club, grab a chance to involve others, get the message to your business contacts, get people to join as members and grow the Subiaco family.

Congratulations

The Presidents Trophy was awarded to the hard working, reliable and always cheerful Maddie Oudman. Maddie is now our head trainer and has also been the colts program head trainer.

Maddie has been an important cog in our success story and is a worthy recipient of this year’s President’s Trophy recognising excellence by the people in our club.

Well done to Captain Leigh Kitchin and his leadership group for driving our standards all year and to Steph Giro for winning the Outridge Medal, outstanding in your first year at Subi. Congratulation to everyone involved this year, be very proud to be part of the Subiaco Football Club - we all are.

Our Ball Legend for 2022 was Aiden Parker and thanks to Parks for being available and getting involved with the club this year. Aiden is another player from our last successful era before 2010 that left us with so many great memories. Aiden joins Mark Webb, Ali Pickett and Brad Smith as ball legends.

To Wally Edwards and Holman Industries thanks for your support as our principal partner likewise to Nick Catania and North Perth Community Bank our community partners thanks for your support.

Our coterie groups -, The Golds, thanks Ross Lockhart and Gary and the PP&S committee.

6

Management

We continue to have some really good people running this Club and we have welcomed Karen South to replace the retiring Debbie King and also Will Rollo is making his impact felt.

Our staff set the standard in the WAFL, they are involved in all industry committees and help drive our club and the competition to improve, well done again to Peter Capes for his leadership and commitment to the club and his staff and Board.

Board of Directors

To my fellow Directors, thank you for your club commitment and support to me this year, it is a team effort. Welcome to Hanif Ibrahim and thanks to Basil Fuller, Dwayne Lamb, Kristi Annear, Fiona White- Hartig and Vice President Russell Smith well done. Thanks everyone for your involvement in the Lions and we aim to continue to provide a community club where we all feel at home, are engaged and most importantly are very proud to support!

Thanks to my wife Debbie, I wish all our members and supporters a Merry Christmas and a Happy and Prosperous New Year.

CEO Report 2022

We were all very excited entering the 2022 season, confident that we had again planned a premiership defense as well as any other over the last decade. Unfortunately, as our early results showed, our premiership defense was effectively over before mid-season and in review that challenge for back to back premierships proved too difficult for a number of reasons.

Firstly, COVID again had a major impact, particularly on players’ illness and then return to play protocols in the late pre-season and first month of the season. It was challenging for all clubs and players however we did not respond well to unscheduled changes and general chaos. We have been very well planned and drilled and other clubs appeared to be able to respond far better than we did.

Add a number of key injuries to the COVID outs and we then debuted a number of players that will no doubt make our club much stronger in future years. But it did impact our resilience and after losing games we should have won, the confidence levels in the group seemed to drop. After that dip, we found it difficult to return to the hardened Subi playing style of recent years.

Thirdly, last year I wrote “I think we all know that this success cannot continue. Winning five league premierships in the last eight years is unprecedented in the history of the WAFL when combined with two Colts flags and Reserves teams getting into finals most years and winning two flags as well.”

Finally, rules to equalize the competition as well as other clubs hunting us and doing whatever they can to topple our dominance eventually took a toll.

Our challenge now is to rebound quickly, get the best from our experienced players while adding the enthusiasm of the younger players to the group. With both the Colts and Reserves groups having very strong years, the player pressure on the league group should continue to drive improvement.

Great Call Again

For the third straight season, COVID and government rules have overshadowed the start to the WAFL season. But as we got past May, there was really no impact and a return to normal operations has been the experience in the last half of hte season.

Congratulations to the WAFC who made two really good decisions, the first to again hold the WAFL Grand Final after the AFL season ended and the second to replace Optus Stadium with Leederville Oval.

The choice of Leederville Oval was made after Optus refused the WAFL Grand Final booking because of the start of cricket season and the need to prepare for the T20World Cup. The Leederville Oval surface was a disgrace by midyear, and it was a gutsy move in the face of obvious risks to the status of the WAFL’s big day. However, it was a master stroke and enabled over 18,000 fans to experience what proved to be a great day of WAFL football.

Many would have rightly experienced nostalgia attending a WAFL venue with a big crowd and exciting atmosphere and having West Perth with three teams playing back at their historical home venue. We were able to ruin part of their day

by winning the reserves premiership in the first game of the day, in front of 6,ooo fans.

SFC Operations

The small number of SFC staff do a very good job considering the lack of resources and at times leadership in the industry however I would like to thank everyone for their contribution.

In football, Kristian Dicton, Dicko to everyone, has provided an important opinion, network contacts and offers a style that is able to compliment Beau and senior coaches. Stuart Berryman continues to manage the talent pathway with dedication and strong support of the key coaches and support staff.

The key role of sponsorship/promotions and AFL hospitality moved midyear from the successful Zac Acott to the promising Will Rollo. Will has been successful in his sport of distance swimming and working at Swimming WA however he initially struggled in the football space. But I’m very pleased to write that Will is now firmly in the drivers seat to lift our AFL hospitality and club sponsorship to new levels. He also brings a new focus with social media plans and also with our high priority communication with members and supporters, the website and Lions eNews.

Karen South didn’t really know what she was in for replacing Debbie King but has shown herself to be a real club asset. Thanks Karen for the additional game day involvement, willingness to help others and always a club first attitude and support of the members.

Well done also to Mack Sheppard, Pauli and his hospitality team. The Weapon is all business, and he has been under pressure to drive new business, new events and functions that have boosted our turnover in bar and functions.

Zoe Bain has only just commenced with SFC in the women’s operations role however we are excited to have Zoe help the club to deliver an improved women’s WAFL program along with senior coach Michael Farmer and Rogers coach and our district officer Jasmine Cookson.

We have now achieved a one club model after years of trying and we are very excited about the possibilities. Our SFC women are already an important part of our club, and they will be a positive part of our future. There will be many benefits from a much closer relationship so let’s get on with that.

Season Highlights

Some of the game day and event highlights during the year included;

• Reserves Grand final victory at Leederville Oval with over 18,000 fans enjoying a great game day environment and everything Leederville can offer.

• Colts progression through to the Preliminay final just losing to eventual premier Peel.

• Largest home crowd of the season v Peel Thunder on the WA Day long weekend – Nat Fyfe playing may have been a factor!

• Delas last game – I was very sad to see the retirement of Club champion and Sandover Medallist Lachlan Delahunty but what a great day that was.

• Life Members Day, including presentations to newly inducted Debbie King, Mark ‘Dessie’ Haynes and Dirty Dave Graham.

• The League game in Kalgoorlie v Swan Districts at Sir Richard Moore Oval, supported by RIO Tinto, the GoldField’s Football League and the City of Kalgoorlie Boulder. Special thanks the Mayor John Bowler and the hard work by both Graeme Borchet and Nadia Turner.

• Playing the first league game back at the WACA this year at the temporary home ground of East Fremantle.

• Weirdly, we played West Coast at Optus Oval as a curtain raiser for WCE v Geelong and then our scheduled home game v West Coast at East Fremantle Oval due to the Leederville Oval turf being ruled unfit to play on by the WAFL.

Key Club Strategy

Strategies change and must address our most significant challenges. The future for us means we must address all the following key issues during next year and beyond.

• The most significant strategy achievement this year has been the “One Club’ Model for the Subiaco men’s and women’s teams and a centre of excellence to house both programs. Des Penman Reserve helps achieve that goal and further development and installation of floodlights will be the best boost for these programs in many years.

• Leederville Oval Master Plan with EP and the City of Vincent

• I wrote last year that hopefully by the end of 2021 new floodlights at Leederville would be announced. That project is still to be funded and signed off.

• Lions Foundation growth and funding sources and then an ongoing strong link and benefit stream for the SFC then incorporating a strong community engagement activation.

• Fan engagement and game day experiences to continue to grow our support base.

Football Operations

The core function of our club is football, the staff, coaches and players that continue to set high goals, challenge each other and never take things for granted.

Our list management remains critical given our club direction to develop our players promoted from successful Colts and Reserves pathways. Its very pleasing to have eighteen debutants in league football and combined with that youthful excitement and some targeted recruitment of our own Taj

Schofield and Kyron Hayden so far, we should be excited by that as well.

I cannot pass without congratulating Lachlan Delahunty for an outstanding contribution to Subiaco and WA football. Regular state player, Sandover Medal, Outridge Medal , four Premierships – a really impressive list of achievements. Add to that a great bloke and teammate, he will be sorely missed by us all.

Talent & Development Pathway

Chayce Creedy has called time as the Colts Coach after 4 years leading this demanding program. He has developed into the best in the competition and thankfully he stays in our coaching ranks as a league line coach in 2023. Well done and I really appreciate your efforts. Maybe the kids and Carly might see a little more of you now.

Stuart Berryman shows he has a bright future that will provide our senior program with a flow of quality players in the coming years.

Sponsors

Thanks to Holman Industries our principal partner for their support, Managing Director Wally Edwards was a regular at home games and always very excited by a Lions victory.

Thanks to the North Perth Community Bank and Chair Nick Catania who are our major community naming rights partner. We expect this partnership to continue to grow in importance.

Stadium naming rights continue to be unfilled for the 6th straight season, an important source of revenue gone wasted. The City of Vincent continue to seek a naming right sponsor that is shared with the clubs based here at Leederville.

Our support sponsors are vital to the club, thanks to Platinum partners SKG Radiology, Pragma Lawyers, AE Hoskins, Anders Elite, CSG Marketing and The Leederville Precinct for your support.

LIONS IN THE COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT & SOCIAL INCLUSION PROGRAMS

The club is a community focused organization, and we will continue to support events and programs in our district which I hope we can grow;

• Prostate Cancer group PROST – the tenth year this exercise and support program has been run in our gym for those men battling prostate cancer. The program assists over 30 men a week.

• The Club joined in supporting the Prostate Cancer Foundation of WA topping the WA donations achieved through the #Walkforhim Challenge which was a proud achievement by our club’s people.

• Basil’s Community Raffle – provides over $25,000 to participating junior football women’s football and netball clubs.

• Wheelchair AFL team in now the 2nd season of the WAFL W league. Proudly supporting inclusion.

9

• Country coaching and development – the Goldfields is important and thanks to both Kristian and Stuart for their regular links and support of our country areas to develop young players.

• Home game day events have been improved and again welcome junior clubs, kids’ zones, activations, little league games and the Kevin Hill experience. Hilly was back from his travels around Australia and firing on all cylinders for the kids yet again. Well done Hilly!!

We must be more relevant to our community, and this is a major focus area for the club and under Director Kristi Annear. The Lions Foundation will be the start of some very important community initiatives and be a great step forward for our club.

Acknowledgements

Thanks again to Mark Lawrence and the board for being really supportive of both myself and all the other staff at the club.

Patron,

Ball Legend, No 1 Ticket Holder And Ambassador

Thanks to Kevin Merifield, Aiden Parker, Justin Langer and Kim Hughes for their passionate support of the club. We remain very fortunate that all these champions continue to give us their time and it is a huge bonus for the club.

Finally, I extend my appreciation to all members and supporters of the Subiaco Football Club, and I wish you all a very merry Christmas as we look forward to the next WAFL season.

10

Football Operations Report

Season 2022, whilst disappointing from a win/loss perspective in the League, the club had many things to be proud of culminating in the Reserves team winning the Premiership and the Colts having an outstanding campaign finishing agonisingly short in the Preliminary Final to Peel who became eventual premiers. The Future is Bright!

Coaching

Subiaco’s coaching staff had a different look in 2022, with Beau Wardman leading the charge once again. Nigel Hamilton oversaw the midfield for the second year running whilst we welcomed back former players Scott Hancock (forwards) and Matthew Spencer (backs). Kellie Properjohn stepped up to chairman of selectors and continued in a leadership capacity. Our reserves had a new head coach Jamie Battigelli who stepped up from an assistant in 2021. Jason O’Malley (forwards), Brent McPherson (midfield) and after rupturing his ACL Jack Mayo put his hand up and looked after the backs. All of our coaches have done an outstanding job across the season maintaining high standards and professionalism in an enjoyable yet challenging environment.

Strength and Conditioning

A big thank you to Michael Dobbin and Jemma Bassi who once again set the bar across the WAFL in the S&C space. Your commitment to our program, especially through challenges thrown up by Covid and last minute training venue changes you took all before you and continually drove high standards and genuine care for our playing group which is greatly appreciated.

Medical Staff

In 2022 the club partnered up with West Coast Health to provide Physiotherapy across our Senior Men’s and Women’s program which saw Phoebe Freeman in charge of the Men’s team. From day one it was apparent Phoebe’s empathy, professionalism, knowledge base and collaborative approach would be a great asset for the football club for hopefully many years to come. Maddison Oudman (Head Trainer) recently received the President’s Trophy which is awarded annually to a member of the club that goes above and beyond in their role and embodies what it is to be a Subi person, congratulations again to Maddie a thoroughly deserving winner. To all our practical students, thank you for all your work this year on game day, but also during the week as you continue to see our players outside of the Club and ensure they are receiving the best advice and treatment possible. Big thanks to our club doctor Kent Morison and the team at SKG led by Lee Parker for all your continued support of our players and the Club. The prompt manner our team get access to medical treatment and scans is outstanding. Thank you!

Match Day Staff

Our property staff like every year continue to do all the work behind the scenes to make sure everything is organised

for training and game day. Alby, Jamie, Rocket and Callum you continue to give your time to help the players and staff which doesn’t go unnoticed and is the fabric of our club. Wil Neil-Smith, Daniel Frisina, Rohan & Dylan Annear, Steve Lind, Brent Irving, Daniel Vidovich and Chad Redfern thank you for the part you all play throughout the season in your various roles.

Players

In season 2022 we had 18 debutants in the League team with 43 players tasting league football across the season. In the reserves, 58 players donned maroon and gold which is a testament to the club’s depth, especially during covid times. In another club first, we had 2 players in Stefan Giro and Angus Dewar called up to play for the West Coast Eagles which was a great reward for effort over the summer. Stef and Angus were also in the WA State Squad joined by Ben Sokol, Chad Harris, Lachlan Delahunty and Leigh Kitchin who was the Captain and eventual Simpson medallist as WA’s best player. Stef capped off an outstanding first year at the club winning the Outridge medal with the runner-up being Leigh Kitchin and after a very consistent year rounding out the top 3 was Liam Hickmott.

Staff

To the Subiaco Board of Directors, our Talent/Senior coaches, Support staff and volunteers, I appreciate all your commitment and support over the season.

Beau Wardman our Senior coach the players, staff and I are fortunate to have someone like you in our corner as you leave no stone unturned to assist, upskill and develop not just players but people. The time and sacrifice to making our program the best should be commended and I have no doubt with the same application we will bounce back quickly and be back where we belong in 2023.

Our office staff in 2022 changed significantly with Karen South coming on board as office manager, Will Rollo in the marketing/sponsorship space Jasmine Cookson as our D.O and Zoe Bain overseeing our women’s program. Thank you to all our office staff for your assistance and friendship over 2022, led by our CEO Peter Capes we have an outstanding office dynamic that makes coming to work a pleasure (most days). As the great man says “if it’s not fun, it’s not footy” Here is to a successful 2023

11

2022 Senior Coach Report

How do you articulate the feelings from season 2022 - some disappointment with the league side’s win/loss, some great optimism in the growth and opportunity for some 18 debutants, some adulation for the premiership success of our reserves side but mostly I feel the pride in seeing young men coming to a home, having a sense of belonging and a greater purpose each week, growing together. To give some examples:

Leadership – Connor Patterson

Role – Galen Savigni / Lachlan Henderson

Confidence – Jordan Snadden

Persistence – Jaimon Alone

Maturity – Max Walters

Football clubs are special places none more special than this one. Outside of family, they raise you, they have the special ability to unify people from all walks of life, the people in this room. We challenge, we support and most importantly we care. When you come to Subiaco, you’re home.

Season 2022 had much expectation and belief that this group had everything it takes to go all the way again. And for that reason, the finality of the season hurt more than most. Yes, we faced adversity with injury, unavailability, the loss of players with COVID and adapting to an ever changing environment, we let winnable games slip, but we were coming up with some success at the back end of the year, however, our run was too late.

This game makes you pay - and if you’re not at your best you will pay and you’re going to get beat as we found out several times this season. However, it’s not a wasted season if we take the learnings and move forward prepared to make the sacrifice when required, have the hunger to strive for more and be ruthless in our preparation - at the end of it, these are our values.

2022, has however provided a great opportunity for transition and for players to step up and accept responsibility. At the league level we played 43 players across the season, we had 18 players make their club league debut and those players will give us greater growth in the years to come for the experience. To match we had 58 at the reserves level including 9 players through colt’s transition. These are significant numbers. Through this opportunity and the club wide program we deliver, our players continued to grow and understand their roles. I am excited and confident about the depth of players we have, evident through the success of our reserves’ premiership and colts’ preliminary final. We will be in a very strong position for the years to come.

For our reserves group, what a terrific performance. I have been so proud of the resilience and cohesion which has underpinned the on-field success across the season culminating in the premiership. To Jamie, the coaches and all the players you should be very proud of this achievement.

The synergy and whole club philosophy, have led to sustained success, with at least one team winning a premiership every year since 2017. The team-first attitude and complete

buy-in from this group over the finals campaign should give everyone in the room great confidence for the future and what can be achieved with care and mutual respect. When things got tough, you had each other’s back, no blame, no shift of ownership, just doing what you could to make each other better.

I work closely with a lot of great people at our club, but our coaches, what impact they have, particularly my senior group, Nigel, Scott, Matt, Vidda, Jamie, Jason, Brent, Irvo and Kellie who support the players with their dedication, attention to detail and care to ensure we run the best program.

They say, “A good coach can change a game, a great coach can change a life.” We aspire to be great coaches and to positively impact the players at our club and in the wider world.

To the Board led by Mark Lawrence and CEO Peter Capes, at times we like to focus on the good times, but when not everything goes to plan, your guidance and support have been unwavering. You have stood firmly behind what we are building as a group, giving the football department confidence to develop these players on and off the field to ensure sustained achievement.

To Dicko - You are a great Football Manager to work with, you have given great support and challenge to ensure we are constantly looking for improvement. You want the best for our group and have been a critical factor in connecting all areas of the club.

A special mention to Chayce Creedy, with over 4 years at the colts, has continued to steer the development of our youth and has been integral to the transition of these players to senior football and having some success to ensure the continued growth of our talent program. I am excited to welcome you into the senior program for 2023.

To the lifeblood of our program, the High-Performance team, and our volunteers. You all play such important roles to help our program be as strong as it is. Alby, Rocket, Jamie & Cal. Words can’t do complete justice to your contributions, behind the scenes, you ensure everything is organised and no one misses.

A big thank you to the partners and families of all the players and staff involved who we demand so much time away from

12

you. For as difficult as the year has been for the players onfield, there is no doubt the ripple effect flows down. We know you ride every bump with us, and I want to acknowledge and thank you for the support and care you give throughout the year and the time you give up to allow us to do what we do.

Our players are a remarkable group of young men, it is an absolute honour and privilege to coach you. The humility you have displayed in victory, the resilience shown when things don’t go to plan, the way you go about your football, combining total dedication with a keen sense of fun. The choices you make to improve yourselves as young men and footballers at this club come with great rewards on and off the field. The way you confront and embrace one another through the good times and the challenges defines the terrific culture that is the envy of the WAFL competition.

We don’t play footy for the games will never quite remember but for the teammates that we will never forget. What lasts with me and is untouchable outside of this room is the spirit within these walls. It’s an old saying - “often you don’t realise what you have until it’s gone.” But I see it every day, maybe more so over the last month, the common bond, the relationships shared among players, the success the failure, the opportunity to come together.

2023 is exciting and bright. Our club has a successful system in place playing a great Subiaco Brand. Getting several more senior games into the future of our footy club was important this year and with the internal growth of these players, with the help of the experience we already have, our rebound will be fast. With the hard work and support of each other, this is going to be a very good journey to be on. But every single person involved in our program has got to drive each other to improve, helping each other get better - that is the only way.

As the great Neale Daniher said, “When it’s all said and done, more is said than done and the mark of a person or group is not what they say but what they do.”

The outcome of this season won’t define us, what will define us is implementing the lessons we have learnt through action. The WORK required, the LEADERSHIP required, the CONNECTION required, and the COMMITMENT required are very clear to have success. Use the pain of disappointment as a pain for change. I am committed to our players, our staff, and this great club to drive us back to the top!

2022 Development Coach Report

The 2022 Development Season was one with constant challenges and adversity for many reasons, yet it has hopefully delivered a silver lining for this great football club, that will reverberate in the seasons to follow.

It’s hard not to think so positively of the year when you finish on a high note, which is certainly the right place to end up, but as I have allowed myself to reflect on the year, it is clear that we overcame a lot as a group to achieve this sweet victory.

Having entered pre-season with a short turnaround after both senior sides played off in the Grand Final, we certainly had our fair share of sore bodies and injuries to manage. However, our list was severely compromised further by the impact of COVID-19 on the eve of our 2022 season.

In Round 1, the League Side debuted 8 players while the Reserves had 16 young men playing senior WAFL Football for the first time, and while we didn’t come away with the win, I was certainly proud of how the very young team took it up to a full-strength South Fremantle.

Unfortunately, COVID continued to have its effects on both the playing and coaching groups over the first month of the season. In Round 2, where we had our only win in this timeframe, myself and 2 assistants succumbed to the virus, leaving our remaining assistant, Jack Mayo in the coaches’ box with amazing fill-ins, Darren Rumble and Daniel Vidovich as the other assistants, as well as Colts Coach, Chayce Creedy taking the reins. (Thank you, Gents!)

Once Covid had finally passed through the club, we could generate some consistency within the Reserves group in terms of our ability to compete after Round 3, however, this didn’t immediately result in a win. In Round 4, we gave up a 32-point lead at three-quarter time to a resilient East Perth side which was ultimately the low point of the season. After a long debrief in the rooms straight after the game, players and coaches made a vow to learn from the result and use the hurt to make this the turning point of our season.

Between Rounds 5 and 13, we did that and proceeded to win the next 7 games straight. The highlight of which came in Round 13 against a robust Peel Thunder side, down in Mandurah. Having worked back into the game after conceding the first five goals and taking a lead into halftime. Unfortunately, this was short-lived as we found ourselves 27 points down with 15 minutes to go. Something deeper took hold, with the boys finding their resilience and belief in the space of 15 minutes to kick the last 32 points in some of the most exciting passages of football I’ve witnessed to win the game by 5 points.

Our season then dipped slightly as we went 2-3 in our remaining 5 games, to finish the season with a 10-6 record which saw us finish 4th on the ladder, narrowly missing out on the second chance. This meant we needed to win four do-ordie games to taste premiership glory.

To take on this huge task, take the competition to the next level and give us the edge, we set ourselves an objective as hitmen. We needed to focus on one target at a time. Take them out and move on to the next. However, the overarching theme of our group throughout the year, was Love and Care accompanied by the saying “We Love, Love” because at

the end of the day you get to play your favourite game with your best mates. It is what drove our energy and mindset throughout the finals series.

As we had 18 players debut in the League side in 2022, as well as 58 players come through the Reserves, we needed to create an environment that was centred around embracing what got the boys these opportunities to play league & senior football and how to build on that. Whilst also reminding them they get to do this not only for themselves but their mates. It was this mindset that continued to gain traction as we made our way through our targets.

The team were completely dominant in the Elimination Final playing Swan Districts, winning by 73 points. This was then followed up with a 43-point win over South Fremantle in the 2nd Semi Final, which lead us to a Preliminary Final against Claremont. A game that certainly tested the resilience of the group and their ability to hang tough within a game. Despite the opposition having 24 more inside 50s for the game, we were able to put them away kicking the last 6 goals to run out 39-point winners.

All this ultimately led us to the big dance against West Perth at our home ground, Leederville Oval. West Perth was the most dominant club in all grades of the competition and had cemented themselves as the benchmark of play for 2022. In the Reserves, they were a team that had only lost 2 games all year, with their last loss coming in Round 4. On Grand Final day, they had over 500 games of League Experience in their side.

The odds may have been stacked against us but the team was confident that if we played to our structures, had the right mindset and ultimately played for each other, we could certainly hold our own on the big day and the boys reflected that with a four-goal to zero opening term. West Perth fought back, having an equally dominating second quarter to go into a half-time with a slender 1-point lead. The message at half-time was that despite giving up the lead, we needed to embrace the position we were in. If you said to us at the beginning of the finals series we would be a point down in the Grand Final at Half Time, we certainly would’ve taken it. In the 2nd half, there were six lead changes and saw scores level with five minutes to go, the boys managed to drag out of the trenches to win the Premiership by a goal in what was a high-quality, thrilling and brutal Reserves WAFL Grand Final.

While this football club is certainly not built on winning Reserves flags, what it is built on are our four pillars, Respect, Hunger, Ruthlessness & Sacrifice which support our teamfirst mindset. It was those characteristics that became so prominent in a young group that led themselves through a finals campaign, achieving a flag from a position that only two others have been able to do before them.

As a football club, we should be extremely excited looking to the future after witnessing what these young men achieved while upholding our four pillars. I believe we will look back on this team as one that lays the foundations of our next League Premiership.

Even though we were a team that prided ourselves on playing our roles, I must still acknowledge Jaxon McGowan who had a

14

great season in winning our Fairest and Best Award. He is a tremendously smart and skilful footballer and I have no doubt will be getting an opportunity to play League Football in the years to come. Lachlan Vanirsen was Best on Ground in the Grand Final, as well as our Player of the Finals. Having played nine League Games in 2022, I am sure this final series will be his launching pad for a long League Career. To our Captain, Connor Patterson. A young man with admirable determination, work ethic and formidable leadership qualities. I have no doubt he will be a long-term leader of our football club in the years to come.

Finally, what we do is never possible without the support of the following: Thanks to Steve Lind (Manager), Rohan & Dylan Annear (Runners), Chad Redford (Rotations), Jemma Bassi (S&C), Maddie Oudman and her training staff, Phoebe Freeman (Physio), Will Neil-Smith (Video Analysis), Kelly Properjohn for keeping the coaches calm, and Kristan Dicton.

To the senior line coaches, Nigel Hamilton, Scott Hancock and Matthew Spencer thank you for your support during the year, particularly during finals in helping us get over the line.

To Beau; You have been a massive support to me and my growth as a football coach and I have enjoyed working with you these last two years. I think we complement each other well and look forward to more years ahead.

To my assistants; Jason O’Malley, Brent McPherson and Jack Mayo. It was awesome to work with three people that are just as passionate about coaching this group as I am. We have grown a hell of a lot and your support to the boys and myself is truly appreciated. It was great to see you all receive medals for your efforts.

To the players, I have loved being around you at training and could not wait for Saturday to roll around each week. This has been the most rewarding year I have had as a football coach and you are responsible for my first flag as a coach. For that, I will never let you out of my heart. It has been a pleasure and an honour to be your football coach. We loved, love!

Women’s Report Season 2022

After yet another COVID-19-affected year, Season 2022 certainly bought its challenges for our women’s side. With a preseason full of drive from our League, Reserves and Rogers Cup teams, an April Round 1 saw to a mixed bag of results on the scoreboard against Peel Thunder: a 1-point loss for League, a 26-point loss for Rogers and a win by 23 points for our Reserves.

Our League team continued to have a season of ups and downs due to COVID outs, injuries and some significant losses because of this, with just two wins on the board by Round 10. Continuous drive and team cohesion in the crucial halfway point of the season led to a significant improvement, with a total of 6 wins by Round 17. The girls managed to finish 5th, unfortunately just missing out on finals.

Though facing similar challenges, our reserves side secured their place as premiership contenders in Week 1 of the finals. However, a devastating loss to Swan Districts saw a 4th place finish on the ladder at the season’s conclusion.

A tough season for our Roger’s Cup girls, with a total of three wins for the season, finishing 7th on the ladder. Despite the difficulties faced this season, we couldn’t be prouder of these girls and the willpower and grit they display through both training and games, as they continue to develop together as our youngest WAFLW team.

We are incredibly proud of the determinative and ambitious efforts of our women’s teams this year; despite the many external challenges they have faced. With numerous players having incredible individual seasons and the continuous display of our strong team culture, we are confident that our Subiaco women’s sides will be one to watch in 2023.

On behalf of Subiaco’s women’s teams, we would like to thank our League, Reserves and Rogers Cup head coaches: Michael Farmer, Chris Busch and Pia Faletti, respectively. Thank you to Sarah Michell for her contribution to our Subiaco women’s side this season, and for many years prior. Another huge thank you goes out to all of our assistant coaches, support staff, members, supporters, sponsors and of course, our players and families. We couldn’t have made Season 2022 without you all. We look forward to what Season 2023 has in store!

Talent Development & Country Zone Report

The future of Subiaco Football Club shines bright with another successful year in the talent development space and Lions regional zones of Kalgoorlie and Esperance. With experienced, passionate people at the helm of our programs, our boys and now girls have access to the best development program in the WAFL, providing a strong and clear pathway for talent in our zone to move through our programs on their way to playing senior football.

Colts

Following a difficult 2021 season, the playing and coaching group were willing to learn from the season and hungry to improve their standing. There were major blows with captains Jacob Evitt and Riley Wills going out with season-long injuries, but the group were resilient and battled deep into finals, which I commend everyone involved in the program on their efforts.

51 boys had the opportunity to represent Subiaco Colts throughout the year, 25 doing so for the first time. Our transition program was a success with boys turning 18 training with seniors in 3-week blocks throughout the season, exposing them to the level of senior football. Well done to Tyrell Dewar and Koltyn Tholstrup for their selection in the State 18s Academy and Rory Murison, Ethan Barbieri and Koltyn Tholstrup for being named in the WAFL Colts Team of the Year.

The program ran successfully due to the hard work of all those involved; Sam, Andy and James their conditioning and injury prevention program allowed the boys to play at full strength. Karen for your administrative assistance and supportive advice. Lastly to the coaching crew of Brent Snook, Josh Leunig, Ryan Redfern and Chayce Creedy your dedication to the development of this group drove the success of the team and the future success of the club. Best wishes to the outgoing staff, especially Josh and Chayce as they look to progress their careers in and outside of football

Futures and Development Squads

“Subiaco development doesn’t aim at winning, but when the processes in place are strong, that is a natural consequence.” This is a quote from one of our coaches and sums up the year for Futures and development squads. Our Futures started the year strong with an undefeated carnival led by the formidable Stuart Page. We played 50 boys in the program including 10 regional-based players and 3 under-agers to aid in their development. The success of the program saw 6 representatives in the WA 16s Academy – Mitch Bell, Malakai Champion, Xavier Hickey, Thomas MacGillivray, Caylon Seelander and Koopa Walsh, with Malakai making the All Australian 16s team

Thanks to the staff who made this program the enjoyable success that it was. Support staff in Jeff Hoskins, Chelsea Pickering and Kristen DeMarco and to the team of experienced Futures coaches in David Emes, Alan Gibson, Steve Sadowski, Steve Elliot and led by Stuart Page. The passion and time given to these boys are reflected in the respect and talent of the group, thank you for your commitment over the past 3-4 seasons.

Our two development squads, 14s and 15s have laid a good foundation for the talent moving through Subiaco FC in years

to come. The depth of these groups is strong with over 100 Subiaco district players given an opportunity to train and play under experienced coaching staff and given access to WAFL standard programs and facilities. Thanks to all the support staff and coaching group for your dedication in laying the foundation for the group’s development; Derek Jenkins, Brad Haseldine, Mark Sandwell, Cas Dunlop, Dylan O’Dea, David Emes, Anthony Detata, John Simmons, Will Neil-Smith, Tom Emes and Mhairi Burke.

Regional

Zone – Goldfields Football League and Esperance Districts Football Association

Congratulations to our regional leagues in the GFL and EDFA for another successful season in their respective leagues. It is always impressive to watch games throughout all levels for each competition and observe not only the talented players but the support shown at each fixture. It doesn’t go without a tonne of work from the Presidents; Graeme Borchet and Stuart Tholstrup and their team of directors so well done to your team.

Our Lions Pride Academy has been well led by Rhett Foster in Kalgoorlie and Michael Perry in Esperance, working with the most talented underaged players in the district and giving them a better opportunity to develop their football to represent Subiaco Football Club, I thank you for moulding these talented players into being the success they have and will become. It has been a big year for regional representatives among our talent programs with 15 colts players coming from our regional zone and another 46 representing Subiaco FC across Futures and Development squads. The highlight was the regional 15s touring side made up of representatives from the EDFA and GFL who competed against other WAFL regional sides in the 15s Regional Carnival in Perth over the July school holidays, going through undefeated and making some lifelong mates. Thank you to everyone in our regional zone who supported these upcoming stars and Subiaco FC in our programs, to name only a small percentage; Brent Gouge for always going above and beyond and running the Zone Carnival, Matty Thornton & Justin Tarasinski with your support of the regional 15s, Nardia Turner & Kate Ainsworth for all the behind the scenes work and to Gemma Harrison the Regional Specialist for all the positive work you do for football in the zone.

The talent program wouldn’t be sustainable without the support of our major sponsor AE Hoskins, thanks to Michael and the team for the ongoing support of Subiaco FC and the Talent Pathway. Garry Addison from Vision Financial and the Golds Ladies for their support to allow our outstanding players to be recognised. A final thanks to all of the Subiaco FC staff, from the top to President Mark Lawrence, CEO Peter Capes and the board – the strategic direction you are taking the club is exciting. Senior football staff in Kristian Dicton and Beau Wardman, your support is unwavering and guidance is cherished. Office staff Will Rollo, Karen South, Macca Sheppard, Zoe Bain & Jasmine Cookson, your eagerness to support outside your roles is greatly appreciated

2022 Colts Coach Report

In order to look forward sometimes we must look back and I find it interesting every year we are asked to write a snapshot for the Annual Report to look back on what was written the year before and see how we have lived up to what we wrote. Last year I wrote this.

“Regardless of what happens, this will be my last year as Colts coach at Subiaco. There are facets of our program and delivery that I felt I didn’t quite nail this season and I want to see if I can improve our program and players before finishing up. That will be the challenge in 2022, can we get a more connected group both socially and onfield, can we further educate players around craft and standards to see them improve and can we reach the heights we think the talented group that is coming through is capable of.”

So, while 2022 from a pure wins and losses viewpoint was a significant improvement, the most pleasing aspect of 2022 was the cultural connection of our group both on and off the field. We made a more welcoming and educational environment that although consistently challenged continued to find a way to make the most of almost every opportunity.

Ultimately our season ended on the preliminary final day at the hands of the eventual premiers by 10 points. We faced significant injury issues throughout the season which meant some of our most talented individuals were not playing in that game and for large parts of the season. Even with those players out though such was the depth and adaptability of our team we were able to remain competitive right up until the end and fell just sort and it took a premiership team to beat us. This is a credit to our whole program.

We were represented in the Western Australian state program in 2022 with both players an integral part of the under-18’s team.

Congratulations

to the players selected;

Under 18s Tyrell Dewar and Koltyn Tholstrup

We were led in 2022 by Captain Jacob Evitt who is a perfect example of what the Subiaco Football Club can help create. Jake’s development as a person and footballer over the last 3 years has been immense and I am incredibly proud of him and his family. Even after a season-ending injury his ability to stay engaged and help his teammates was never doubted. Helped by his greater leadership group of Ethan Barbieri, Jack Gouge, and Riley Wills who all did a good job helping foster a good group feel and standard in 22.

We are blessed to have such great sponsors that help us to continue to drive our program. Thank you, to our Talent Pathway Partner, AE Hoskins Building Services as well as Holman, Bendigo North Perth Community Bank and Vision Financial Strategies. We are forever grateful for your continued support.

We continue to try and build our connection to the community in which our players come from and I thank all the community coaches who I work with week in and week out when our players are playing community football. Thank you for providing feedback on our players and for housing them when not playing at Subiaco. I also thank our regional academy which continues to do great work in promoting regional players and preparing them for working through the talent system.

As with any football program, many hands work hard to make it happen and I thank them all from the bottom of my heart for the effort and dedication they have to our talent program. So, to all listed below, I thank you.

Assistant Coaches Josh Leunig, Ryan Redfern, Brent Snook and Alan Gibson

Support Staff Craig Francis, Karen South, James Claxon Talent Board Director Gary Addison Runner Matt Pannell

Strength and Conditioning James Mckee, Andy Bottega, Joel Broad and Samantha Harvey and the many wonderful assistants who go above and beyond to help our players.

Thanks also to the Subiaco Executive led by President Mark Lawrence and CEO Peter Capes for again supporting the talent pathway. I made it my mission to make sure the pressure was sustained to get the club to invest and improve the facilities for the talent program which have been neglected over the last 5 years and with their hard work and that of others there is light on the horizon.

I would also like to thank both Beau and Dicko from within the Senior Program who provide great support to talent and have focussed on transferring talent from the Colts system and integrating them into the Seniors. We have exciting times ahead with our local talent.

Thanks also to Stuart Berryman who was much better placed as we headed into season 2022. I know he has a great vision for continuing to grow the SFC Talent Pathway and I thank him for his support.

I will look back fondly on my time with the colts at the Subiaco Football Club for giving me such a great grounding in elite coaching. I have been blessed with great people, great players and great fun. I look forward to watching the program develop and helping where I can as I embark on the next football challenge.

Fans, Members and Partners

At the conclusion of the 2021 Season, Subiaco Football Club recognised the requirement for the Club to adapt to the modern consumer in order to grow our member base and financial stability. With a realignment at board level, an emphasis was placed on the Clubs relationship with Fans, Members and Partners through the touch points of Marketing and Communications, Business Development, Merchandise, Membership, Game Day Experience, and Functions and Events.

Marketing and Communications

Subiaco looked east and abroad this season to match industry trends in marketing and communications. The team of Jack Foley, Dana Jollife and Matt Paddick excelled providing behind the scenes access unparalleled in the League.

The strategy remained consistent throughout the season, aiming to turn strangers into fans, into spectators, to members of the Club. This was successful with followership and engagement rising on all platforms.

Business Development

Through the assistance of CSG Marketing, Subiaco launched a league first Business Network Group aimed at connecting like-minded individuals looking to expand their commercial connections. Whilst severely impacted by COVID-19, there was resounding support for the program, which looks to be implemented in Season 2023.

With an ever increasingly competitive market, the Club is aware of the requirement to innovate and to provide a space for all. There have been significant steps forward within this area which will come to fruition in 2023.

If you are interested in supporting the Club in this endeavour or through commercial assistance, please contact a board or staff member.

AFL Hospitality

As with the rest of football, the AFL was hit hard by COVID-19. The flow-on effect led to a decline in attendance across the board, including an uptake in our AFL Hospitality packages. Despite the hiccup, there will be a return to normality in 2023 assuming a season long AFL fixture release.

We would like to thank the Camfield for their assistance throughout 2022, ensuring a world-class experience for all games.

Merchandise

It was another consistent year for merchandise sales. The introduction of a street wear line was adopted by players and fans alike, a promising sign for things to come.

End of season specials are being promoted to members and fans representing great value for family gifts or

Christmas presents. For details access our online team store (https://shop.subiacofc.com.au/).

Thanks goes to our Team store assistants who have excelled in this trying time.

Membership

Scanning our membership base renewals and new signings showed a general increase overall for the year with popular categories of Lion and Pride being prominent once again.

The continuation of Reserved Seating was certainly popular with regular home game attendees taking this opportunity for their group involvement. This add-on to membership will continue as will our parking concession availability.

As a regular service to members the club website promoted current news and events, summarised with our popular weekly in-season Lions News, additional social media representation still retains a high public interest.

Our thanks are recorded to Jeff King and staff (KC Australia) for being associated with this section of club sponsorship as our Membership Partner. Their involvement in many promotions within our operations and assisting with expertise in merchandising was certainly appreciated. We look forward to ongoing involvement in the coming years.

Functions and Events

The Subi Sports Bar has seen growth in 2022. Despite the post COVID-19 climate, the facility has returned to close to maximum capacity with areas for expansion on the horizon.

Thank you to all our regular clients who have supported us throughout this trying time.

Additionally, the Subi Sports Bar is looking to assist in providing a better game day experience. The continuation of the Member Draw and Game Day Special saw the bar reach capacity numerous times throughout the season.

Game Day Experience

An area that has had significant support from the WAFL for the past seasons continues to remain a priority for the Club. The inclusion of Barefoot Entertainment and Dinner at Dusk saw food trucks and alternative activations take centre stage at all home games in 2022, to mixed success.

The Club is working closely with East Perth and the City of Vincent to locate areas of opportunity to assist in the immediate and long term with the aim to create an entertainment product for all who attend a WAFL game.

Additionally, sponsorship activations with Rumble Subiaco, Little Things Gin and North Perth Community Bank expanded the offerings for all attendees and will look to be replicated in 2023.

Business Development Report

2022 was once again a rollercoaster for all things Subiaco. Players, Members and Staff alike were required to show resilience through the ramifications of COVID-19. Despite the unpredictability, we saw growth in commercial support, subscriptions, and engagement.

Following a 2021 Premiership, expectations were high for all departments at Subiaco Football Club and whilst the League did not end with the desired results, the season was still a step forward. Success is achieved through the continuous pursuit of perfection and those high standards shape the Club on and off the field and will continue going forward into 2023.

Corporate Partners

It has been another fantastic 12 months for our new and existing partners, with each partner playing an important role in the continued success of the Club.

To those organisations who joined Subiaco as a partner in 2022 and those who renewed their partnership this year, I thank you for your support and look forward to long and fruitful relationships going forward.

The Subiaco community would be unable to function without the ongoing generosity of our commercial partners.

We would like to thank Wally Edwards and his team from Holman Industries for their continued support of the Subiaco Football Club in what was Holman’s fourth year as Principal Partner of Subiaco, and we are looking forward to the next two years of partnership and beyond.

To the Club’s Platinum Sponsors; Nick Catania from North Perth Community Bank, Michael and Carol Hoskins from AE Hoskins Building Services, Aaron McDonald from Pragma Lawyers, Oliver Healy from AndersElite, Carl Leembruggen from The Leederville Precinct and Lee Parker from SKG Radiology, thank you all for your ongoing support of the Club.

Subiaco welcomed new sponsors AndersElite, Rumble Subiaco, TECSEC, Little Things Gin, and Grand Cinemas, thank you for coming on board in 2022, and we look forward to many years to come.

To all other partners from 2022, we thank you for assisting this great Club.

Communications

Subiaco saw growth in all communications streams throughout 2022 with our Instagram, Facebook and Website engagement ranking within the top three in the WAFL. We continue to explore communication channels to reach members, fans and potential supporters creating an in-depth perspective on all things Subiaco.

We continued our aim at being industry leaders with new content for 2022 including the beloved Subi Sizzle, the refreshed-looking Game Day Score updates covering Colts through to League games every weekend, the Pragma Play of the Day, and many more segments. Utilizing industry trends, the Club will continue to look to implement these throughout 2023, and the addition of new content.

Match Days

Throughout the 2022 WAFL Premiership Season, Subiaco played host to NAIDOC Round, and North Perth Community

Bank Cup, as well as hosting the first WAFL Game in Kalgoorlie since 2014.

Despite the adversity provided by COVID-19 restrictions, an ever-evolving fixture listing and inadequate turf at Leederville Oval the Club recorded a total of 13,138 spectators across the nine (9) WAFL home games, only 100 fewer per game than in 2021. Including a home game in Kalgoorlie and at Shark Park, Season 2022 was full of surprises such as dual Brownlow Medalist Nat Fyfe making his return to Football against the Lions in Round 7 in front of a season-high, 2899 crowd.

Overcoming the obstacles, we managed a slight decrease in gate takings ($) by 9.3% compared to the 2021 season. Whilst the decrease is disappointing, we are confident with fewer disruptions in 2023 an increase in attendance is inevitable.

The season concluded with the 2022 WAFL Grand Final held at Leederville Oval. For the second time in three years, the WAFL Grand Final was played at a community ground; with resounding positivity. 16,791 spectators attended to record the highest attendance in venue history.

Appreciation

Thanks goes to Peter Capes and the Board of Directors of the Subiaco Football Club for their continued support, guidance, and knowledge towards Business Development.

To Beau Wardman, Jamie Battigelli, Chayce Creedy, Leigh Kitchin and the entire playing group, thank you for allowing unprecedented access to all areas of the club. Through your assistance, there is no doubt that Subiaco is the best follow in football.

To fellow staff members Karen South, Kristian Dicton, Stuart Berryman, McKenzie Sheppard, Zoe Bain and Jasmine Cookson (WAFC Development Officer), thank you for your support towards Business Development this year. In addition, the outgoing Zac Acott for his contributions throughout his tenure Subiaco Football Club, your legacy will be felt for years to come.

To Matt Paddick, Jack Foley, Dana Jolliffe and Mark Pisarskis thank you for your assistance in 2022. These individuals have been crucial to the Club’s success in communications and ensuring match days were run smoothly this year. Thanks for volunteering your time and services over some the year.

Looking Ahead

Despite the hiccups provided by the 2022 WAFL Season, the Club made significant progress in key areas

Looking ahead to the future of the Club, there is an increasing requirement to adapt to the modern consumer. Utilizing technological advancements and innovative thinking, we will continue to evolve creating a space for all with football as the vehicle.

We will continue to look at generating activity around the facilities we have at our disposal to help improve our financial position; especially working with the City of Vincent and East Perth Football Club to obtain naming rights for Leederville Oval, as it remained unnamed for the 6th straight year.

Community Report

Another season of WAFL and another Premiership for the Subiaco Football Club. As I sit and write this report I reflect on the three years I have been on the board. We have celebrated three premierships over three different grades and three undefeated years for our futures program. Let’s hope the fourth season carries on this tradition.

Naturally, a playing list consistently displaying exemplary onfield leadership will carry that into their communities and this year we have given back in various impactful ways.

Wheelchair Football:

Since our last annual report, the WA Wheelchair Football League wrapped their inaugural season. Alongside East Perth and Swan Districts, we played off in a round-robin final series with East Perth coming out on top. Subiaco lost a couple of our star players due to representing Australia in their given sports but we were all very proud of how our team went. This is just another example of the game we love being accessible to everyone.

2022 is the first year that WA will be sending a team to the national championships hosted in Melbourne at the end of November. Subiaco has one representative who has been chosen to captain the side, Ryan Zilioli. We wish Ryan and the team the best in the championships and hope they can follow in WAs rich winning history of state representation.

Loan a Lion:

The club is passionate about giving back to our members so this year we kicked off a new initiative ‘Loan a Lion’. Four of our Colts players, Jack Gouge, Josh Bell, Jake Evitt and Ethan Barbieri spent their free time helping out at Garry Underhill’s

place in the garden. We encourage our supporters and members to get in touch with the club if you have a job you think some fit young players can help out with.

Ladies Day:

A highlight on the season’s calendar for our ever supportive mothers, daughters, wives, girlfriends and members is Ladies’ day. Presented by Little Things Gin we were treated to a gin bar serving up some amazing mixes alongside Backyard Booch Co and their Kombucha cocktails. Champagne on arrival had the women ready for a great afternoon of fashion parades put on by the wonderful girls from Global Roaming’s Girl’s FX program draped in exquisite pearl jewellery from Pearls of Australia and silks designed and printed by local aboriginal artists. We had over $2000 door and raffle prizes donated by Subiaco FC-supported businesses such as Keturah Day Spa, Quest Holiday apartments, West Coast Dress hire and many others. The guests in the room were treated to personal videos recorded by our players in tribute to the special women in their lives. Some showed their appreciation of their mothers, and some showed a lot more.

Fittingly following the event the annual players’ review, ‘Subi’s Got Talent’ entertained the women well into the night. Dela and his team back to back to back streak ended with Marshy and his scantily clad boys wishing they were punk rockers.

Club Initiatives:

This year again we supported the Walk for Him campaign raising funds and awareness for Prostate Cancer and the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia. The cause is close to the hearts of some of our staff members including myself so it was special to be named as the number one walking team in the country with 74 members raising a combined $17,756. During Men’s Health Week our team members walked over 49,000 steps each, finishing with a recovery walk with our supporters and dogs at Leighton beach on Sunday.

Subi Sports Bar facilities are a great place to hold all sorts of events and we are proud to offer the room to local charities to use for fundraising nights free of charge. Some of the organisations we supported are:

Melanoma WA, Perth Homeless Support Group, 100 Women, Youngbloods Australia the Australian Federation Party and more.

In round 5 we headed to Kalgoorlie to play our first regional game in a few years. It’s a great opportunity for our players and staff to engage with our zone and to speak to everyone involved in the development of the many players that come through our system. We were able to facilitate a club & coaching seminar at Boulder Oval, ran sessions with our Lions Pride program with Nigel Hamilton and ran an important indigenous cultural session hosted by local elder, Trevor Donaldson with the local community. It is a priority of ours to work closely with the local community and clubs to ensure football also provides opportunities off the field. We had a great turnout despite the weather for the main game on Saturday vs Swan Districts and came home with a hard-earned win.

North Perth Community Bank Cup supported by the North Perth Community Bank is played vs our neighbours, East Perth each year. The day brought blustery winds and pouring rain which put a dampener on the usual kid’s activities and on-field activations, but we are thankful to the NP Community Bank, which is our major Community Partner, for not only the support for the game but also what we can achieve through our local grassroots activities.

In the lead up to the WAFL’s Think Mental Health Round, we hosted a BBQ after training sponsored by ‘Talk to a Mate’ a Reginal Men’s Health Initiative and Think Mental Health.

Chayce Creedy our Colts coach who is also on the board of the RMHI spoke to the group about wellness and the importance of starting a conversation. “Every year players are more open to talking about their mental health and taking time out when they need to,” Creedy said. “They’re making sure the balance and understanding of mental health is important, which is a positive thing.

NAIDOC Round is a special one on the WAFL calendar for all teams. In the year when the Indigenous flag had been ‘freed,’ there were even more reasons to Get Up! Stand Up! Show Up! Uncle Neville Collard once again welcomed us to country both on the field and at our Presidents Luncheon. The players walked through the smoking ceremony to Uncle speaking about everyone working together like a footy team does to achieve a safe and prosperous community in which we can all live. Gather Foods, a majority Aboriginal owned business headed up by Gerry Matera catered an incredible lunch that provided a premium native food-inspired menu.

Each year we have SEDA kids carry out vocational work inside the club where they get the opportunity to learn from leading industry experts, coaches and elite athletes. We had two students play in our Colts team Ryan Newick and Tyler Senge and two representing the SEDA/Fremantle Dockers Sport, Business and Leadership program, Dylan and Rohan Annear who worked closely with Beau and Jamie in the footy operations department. The club is privileged to offer these opportunities each year to the next generation of Subi players, coaches or administrators and wishes them luck in their chosen careers.

Subiaco FC and Leederville Oval hosted the 16th Annual Con Regan Memorial Football Game on the 30th of October. This game brings together players from across Perth in a grudge match of North Vs South. The teams consist of Policemen and women playing in their respective games all in the name of raising much-needed funds for WA Police Legacy. Con Regan was a police officer turned footballer who played more than 250 games for East Fremantle in the ‘50s and ‘60s and was the first-team manager for the Fremantle Dockers. He sadly passed away in 2007 at age 72 while on a cruise in Canada.

Over $21,000 was raised at the game and it was a great day to recognise the men and women of WA’s Police force.

Members supported the nominations, and the recipients will be officially inducted and were introduced at a Life Members dinner earlier this year.

Golds Report

2022 was a year of great expectation. The League team were slow to start and had their backs to the wall for the rest of the year. The Reserves and Colts both had exceptional seasons with the Reserves overcoming West Perth to win the Premiership. Subiaco 8.6 to West Perth 7.6 and the Colts going down to Peel Thunder in the Preliminary Final 10.9 to 9.5.

We had an array of speakers at our monthly meetings including Club President Mark Lawrence, Coach Beau Wardman, General Manager Football Operations Kristian Dicton, Talent Manager Stuart Berryman. Subiaco CEO Peter Capes also came to our Mid Year meeting to inform us about interesting areas around the Club.

Unfortunately I had some health issues during the year and missed some meetings but was expertly covered by Vice President Angelo Porcaro.

Once again we enjoyed the company of the Golds Ladies under the leader Dee Kitson. We enjoyed a variety of meals at our monthly meetings. A great arrangement to combine both groups.

Fritz Vanirsen was very helpful in arranging and inviting players along to our monthly meetings. He endeavoured to get as many of the new players to the Club along. We also enjoyed having Captain Leith Kitchen at some meetings.

Being unable to attend the Kalgoolie Grand Final Peter Capes and Kristian Dicton jumped in and represented the Club. The game was close and the victor was Railways FC 9.12 to Boulder City FC 7.10. They presented the Subiaco Golds Medal to Jordan Reid from Railways FC.

My thanks go to the committee of Golds for their help during my troubled year. Special thanks to TRG for their assistance in setting up for our meetings.

Lotto Super Numbers is our major fund raiser and to all who supported this our grateful thanks We were able to sell out both series which enabled us to donate $2000 to Colts and award monthly and Golds Player of the Awards. Thanks to the members who donated prizes to our monthly meeting raffle.

After 12 years of President of Golds I find it’s time to hand the batten to a new leader.

To all at Subiaco Football Club, the committee and members of Golds I extend my thanks for their support and wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a great 2023.

Past Players Officials and Supporters Annual Report 2022

Well another season has come and gone. Mixed results but good to see we are nearing the end of so many Covid restrictions. On the field it was great to see both the Colts and the Reserves make the finals. The future is great with the Futures teams continuing to win. The reserves topped the season off for us all with a thrilling win. The Subiaco Reserves continue to be the club with the most reserves Premierships.

It is with much thanks we say goodbye to Lachlan Delahunty Sandover Medallist and 5 times Premiership player as he hangs up his boots. We have a Past Players membership ready for you Lachlan. Thanks for all your commitment and effort. Enjoy retirement.

I must thank my Committee for all their hard work. As I said I think we are now seeing the light at the end of the Covid tunnel. We might me be able to get back to having all the Reserves at our half time functions. Thanks for all the food and goodies everyone brings to half time. Once more we need to especially thank Celeste, Terry and Glenn for all they do at half time home functions. Food preparation, setting up and organising the Raffle. Where would we be without you. Thanks to all our members and non members that support our raffle.

The Combined past players continue to support all Junior State team representatives as well as Country week where we sponsor The Rising star.

Subiaco Past Players also support our Esperance clubs. Terry and Celeste once again attended Grand Final Day at awarded trophies on our behalf. A long trip but much appreciated by Esperance. Well done Terry and Celeste. It is great to see many of these award winners coming up and joining Subiaco.

This year saw us have our second Combined Past Players Quiz Night and it was very successful. Hopefully we can run a Quiz night for our Club in 2023.

Our AGM will be in early February and you will be notified of the date. If you know any Club members, especially parents of Colts or Reserves players bring them to the AGM and they can join us. During each home game we provide food and drinks for our members and we have fellowship with past players members from most of the other WAFL clubs. See terry if you want to join.

Thanks to the Bar Staff and the Board of Subiaco Football Club for all your help and support during the season.

Congratulations once more to the Mighty Reserves Premiers. Have a safe and Blessed Christmas. See you all next year. Go the Mighty Lions

Retirees

We farewell three Premiership Players in 2022 with Lachlan Delahunty, Hayden Kennedy and Brandon Matera informing the Club of their intention to step down from WAFL Football.

Matera who joined the Club in 2021 to play alongside brother, Bailey Matera was pivotal to the success of the 2021 Premiership team. The highlight machine played 31 Games for the Lions, kicking 39 Goals and providing excitement every time he was near the football.

The Club would like to wish Brandon, his wife, Samantha, and their baby girl all the best for their future and look forward to hosting Brandon as a proud alum.

A proud product of the Subiaco region, Kennedy grew up within the system as a Kalgoorlie representative. Playing through Colts and Reserves, Kennedy went on to play 91 League games for Subiaco, including the 2015, 2018, 2019 and 2021 Premierships.

A Western Australian representative in 2018 and 21 Votes in Sandover Medal in the same year, Kennedy’s tenacity was felt throughout the league. A beloved clubman, a fierce defender and a valiant leader, Kennedy will be sorely missed within Subiaco and the WAFL. We wish him the best for future endeavours.

One of the most decorated Lions in club history, Delahunty hung up the boots after extracting everything from his body across 8 seasons in the WAFL.

The 31-year-old will depart the game having played 140 games for Subiaco in which he played in 7 Grand Finals, winning five of them, a Sandover Medal, and numerous State team representations.

“It’s been a privilege to play so many years at this great football club and I’ll forever be grateful for the opportunity to represent Subiaco,” Delahunty said.

“Footy and the Subiaco Lions have given me so much and I’ve loved the journey. I’ve made lifelong friendships and learnt so much from champions like Kyal Horsley, Darren Rumble, and of course my best mate Kitch. In addition to mentors such as Schoey, Beau and all assistants. Subiaco has become my family this past decade and a place to call home. Thank you.”

A monumental class on 2022, the Subiaco Football Club is greater thanks to your contributions.

Vale

George Woodhouse

Woodhouse was a valuable part of our proud history, playing 34 League games and 28 Reserves games between 1956 and 1958.

Throughout his playing career with Subiaco, Woodhouse was consistently a top performer and won the Reserves Fairest and Best in 1958.

Woodhouse returned to the Club to take up a coaching role of the Reserves in 1972/73, coaching the team to a Premiership in 1972.

John Haselhurst

Known as one the most promising young athletes as a class footballer and athlete, Haselhurst played 42 League games for Subiaco from 1964-67. A ruck-rover who could get his own ball, Haselhurst was beloved by many Subiaco fans.

Little League Report 2022

I’m so very pleased to say, “I’m back!”

It’s such a wonderful feeling to be back around the Club with all the great Subi supporters, Club support staff and friends, along with the passionate Subiaco staff.

Before I begin with a rundown on the Little League year, let me congratulate the Ressies for winning their Grand Final and well done to the Colts for making it through to the finals.

It’s been yet another different year with having a home game at a very wet Leederville oval, and home games at Kalgoorlie and East Fremantle ovals due to the wet conditions on our ground. In the end, we were able to play teams from all junior Clubs as well as teams from Kalgoorlie during the 2022 football rounds. Sadly, Esperance missed out this year but we will be sure to accommodate them soon.

With the threat of Covid still foremost on our minds, we decided not to take junior players into the League change rooms to watch their teammates run through their warmups so instead we checked out other parts of Subiaco Football Club’s home ground. This included a tour inside reception, the timer’s box and the coaches box at the back of the grandstand. This put a new slant on the day’s outing and was well received by all.

A special thanks to players and Subiaco staff for their informative talks to the junior players, pre-match, and for the interest shown in our Little League players. Thanks to Andrew McDougall for his talk to Little League and offering to be their manager one day. Our District Officer, Jasmine Cookson, proved to be a rock for me this year, for which I am most grateful. She ably filled in for me on one occasion and helped out throughout the year. My thanks also to Will and Stuey for their involvement. As always, I very much appreciate the support and encouragement from Peter Capes and Mark Lawrance enabling our Club to set a high standard for a memorable Little League experience with ‘Lions’ Pride’. Little League appreciates the time put forward by our stalwart volunteers and the great encouragement shown by our Subi supporters.

Hilly (100% Subi)
