The Summit Country Day School is happy to say that 2019 will be a ….Summit Summer! We provide All day programs from June 3 through August 9 for children in preschoolgrade 8. Our program is fresh and packed full of fun for all children. Additionally, we have programming for High school students both for school credit and just an opportunity to explore a subject. Our signature Traditional Day Camp will service those ages 3-6. There are nine weeks of summer with each week hosting a theme and one field trip. They will join the fun from 9 a.m.- 4 p.m. each day from Monday through Friday. There will be smiles everywhere as we explore the arts, cooking lessons, get outdoors and unplugged, make movies, go treasure hunting and much more. Extended Day will be offered beginning at 8 a.m. and again after camp, from 4 -5 p.m. For grades 1-8, we have a menu of choices for kids to ‘Pick Your Fun’: including Robotics, Laffalot, Service Camp, Sports, and much more. You won’t believe how much fun we are packing into one summer! Weather permitting, lunches will be held outdoors. We will move the fun to one of our three gymnasiums if needed. You bring your lunch, we bring the fun!

Week 1 Dates: June 3-7 Time: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Fee: $325 What’s Cooking? Get ready to measure, mix and stir up a good time! Along with cooking and art projects, campers will be tasting lots of different exotic and delicious ingredients. Making good food choices, basic nutrition and healthy after-school snacking alternatives will be taught. Your camper will leave with all the recipes from the week to repeat the fun at home. A field trip to LaRosa’s to make your own pizza completes the week. A perfectly delicious week!

Week 2 Dates: June 10-14 Time: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Fee: $325 South American Passport to Adventure! Time to spice things up and learn all about South America. Campers will enjoy learning about the animals, traditions, foods and cultures of this colorful continent. From Carnival to Machu Picchu and prehistoric caves, the adventure will continue! Campers will go bananas for themed crafts, games and delight in learning about tree frogs, toucans, alpacas and other creatures of South America. Week 3 Dates: June 17-21 Time: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Fee: $325 Building Fun with LEGO® Calling all builders! This week will focus on planning, construction and using your creativity. Campers will be amused by both group projects and individual building time. After boys and girls build their own custom contraptions, they will have fun making Lego themed crafts and snacks. In addition to LEGO® Bricks, campers will use wheels, cranks and other tools to build the ultimate week of fun. Gear up for a great time! Week 4 Dates: June 24-28 Time: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Fee: $325 Animals from Around the World During this week, campers will learn about animals and the characteristics which make them unique, including information about their natural habitats. We


will study creatures from the deserts, damp forests, murky ponds and even deep ocean waters. Campers will enjoy games and crafts exploring animal behaviors and developing a greater appreciation for our animal friends around the world! Week 5 Dates: July 8-12 Time: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Fee: $325 The Zany Characters of Mo Willems Mo Willems has been delighting young readers for more than a dozen years with books like Knuffle Bunny, Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus and his popular Elephant and Piggie series. Join these and other zany characters on a funny journey to sharing and kindness. Campers will act, create art, construct crafts and laugh during delightful games while exploring the many wonderful characters of Mo Willems. Week 6 Dates: July 15-19 Time: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Fee: $325 Superhero Academy Boom! Pow! Wham! Young superheroes unite! Learn about the heroics of famous superheroes (and supervillains!), invent your own super character and save the day! We will design costumes, create superhero powers and follow our own code of superhero behavior. Dive into fun and games, art projects, story adventures, obstacle courses and more. A fun trip to a super spot to practice your best hero skills will end the week. Week 7 Dates: July 22-26 Time: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Once Upon a Time...Fairy Tales Let’s go for a walk in the woods and see who we find! We may see the 3 bears, Goldilocks, Rapunzel, or Hanzel and Gretel! This week we will explore the many traditional fairy tales that have been told for generations. We will make food, do special craft projects and act out the fairy tales. So come join us for a bowl of porridge and gingerbread! Week 8 Dates: July 29- Aug. 2 Time: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Fee: $325 Wet and Wild It’s hot out there! It is time for you to splash with your teachers and camp friends. A fun water adventure is planned, guaranteed to bring smiles to all. Be ready

to get wet and bring your swimsuit and towel. We will keep your things here all week, so make sure your name is on everything. Week 9 Aug. 5-9 Time: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Fee: $325 Space Exploration This week will be out of this world! Explore the galaxy, the sun, the planets and the constellations as you pretend to be space explorers. Rocket into the solar system for this week of indoor and outdoor fun. Blastoff!

Details Each week listed is from Monday-Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Fee is $325 per week for ages 3-6. Extended day is also available before and after camp. Please see online registration for details. * Children are to be fully independent with toilet use to attend. The teachers will not have the facilities or ability to change diapers or training pants.

Upper School Health: Grades 9–12 Successful completion of this course satisfies the graduation requirements of The Summit as well as the state of Ohio by earning 0.5 credits. The summer health class would meet the typical 60hour course duration. The course includes all material covered in the semester class and includes a variety of assignments and assessments, including a comprehensive final exam and a research project. The workload is heavy and requires extensive reading and memorization. Students may expect to work up to four hours each day outside of class time and should plan for full days of study over each weekend. Course credit requires a specific number of contact hours with the instructor and therefore students must be present for each session. Any student who misses more than 240 minutes (equaling one day) for excused or unexcused reasons will need to repeat the course during the school year. Minimum of seven students required. Registrations will be taken up to a maximum of 18 students. This class will meet for four hours per day. Please feel free to bring snacks, drinks or lunch to the class. CP U.S. Government: Grade 11 This course is based upon the curriculum set forth by the Common Core. This is a single semester course that is a graduation requirement. Students successfully completing this course will receive 0.5 credits. The material covers the Constitutional underpinnings of our government and how Supreme Court interpretations, along with historical and political changes, have shaped the nature of our government. The main focus will be on the national government, but state and local governments will also be covered. Throughout this summer class, students will be learning basic skills about how clay works, wheel throwing and hand building techniques.Successful completion of this course satisfies the graduation requirements of The Summit by earning 0.5 credits. The Ceramics I class would meet the typical 60-hour course duration. The course includes all material covered in the semester class and includes a variety of assignments. Course credit requires a specific number of contact hours with the instructor and therefore students must be present for each session. Upper School Ceramics II This class is designed for students who interested in strengthening their foundation techniques learned in Ceramics I and are ready to work with most wheel thrown forms. New shaping techniques and surface decoration will also be covered. Successful completion of this course satisfies the graduation requirements of The Summit by earning 0.5 credits. The Ceramics I class would meet the typical 60-hour course duration. The course includes all material covered in the semester class and includes a variety of assignments. Course credit requires a specific number of contact hours with the instructor and therefore students must be present for each session. During your time this week, you will work on skills like 3D printing, laser cutting and more. Students will use at least one new tool each day and they work through the design process to imagine, plan and create their own project to take home. Instructor: Mary Kate Newton, Middle School Library and Technology Specialist, The Summit Country Day School Date: June 3-7 Time: 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Grades 4-8 Fees: $180 Laffalot Camp Laffalot Summer Camp offers kids a week of funfilled activities that will leave them smiling, exhausted and ecstatic. Led by well-trained counselors, your child will spend the day playing high-energy sports and games that help them develop teamwork, build total body coordination, learn sportsmanship, improve interpersonal skills and enjoy friendly competition. Grades 1-5 Session I Dates: June 3-7 Time: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Fee $185

Comic Book Creating Led by Summit Middle School sixth grade Language Arts teacher Brendan McEachern, campers will create their own comic book or graphic novel. Campers will learn how to create a character, script a scene and draw action panels with narration. Campers will work with a local comic book artist and take a behind the scenes field trip to a comic book store for the afternoon. Besides being The Summit’s sixth grade English teacher, Mr. McEachern is lifelong comic book collector with more than 14,000 comic books in his collection. Grades 4-8 Instructor: Brendan McEachern, Middle School Language Arts Teacher, The Summit Country Day School Dates: June 3-7 Time 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Fee $350 (Includes a comic book gift pack signed by artist and writer) Summer Studies in the Latin Language This Latin Camp is a two-week intensive study of the various disciplines in Greek and Roman studies. It is intended for motivated students, but remedial instruction is also available. The session is especially useful for students who plan to attend the National Junior Classical League Convention at North Dakota University (Fargo ND) from July 26-31. • It is 10 days in all, Monday through Friday, June 3 to June 14. Each four-hour day (8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.) is roughly divided into 4 parts: • The first part of the morning (8:30 to 9:30 a.m.) is devoted to an independent study topic from classical civilization. Each student will pick an area of interest and explore it in greater detail. • The second part of the day (9:30 to 10:30 a.m.) focuses on the study of the Latin language. Whether beginning or advanced, students will improve their comprehension of Latin vocabulary,


grammar, syntax and translation through individualized instruction and small, student-led classes. • The third part (10:30 to 11:30 a.m.) is a group session where the students will read excerpts from Greek and Latin authors to gain insight into Greco-Roman mythology, history and culture. • In the final part of the day (11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.), students again return to their independent study topics. This final period is also an opportunity for students to prepare for the various competitions at the national convention (Certamen, art projects, creative art practice, etc.) • Students may come to any or all of the session days/weeks. There is no problem with students coming for just a week, or arriving late or leaving early. • The instruction will be geared towards ability and interest. and achieve goals in an environment geared toward girls. Participants will be taught rules of the each game and basic skill development in a variety of sports, introducing a new one each day. Games will encourage team play and interaction in a safe and active setting encouraging physical fitness and teamwork. Topics can range from comedy to action to adventure. It is up to your imagination! Campers will focus on creating a script and filming it throughout various location in and outside the school. We will also be editing, adding special effects and music. Campers can post their projects online for the world to see! Campers will enjoy an afternoon field trip to see a movie during the week. Fun for all! Campers will spend time taking in some nature for inspiration, but the majority of camp time will be spent creating masterpieces inside with materials and work space available! Save the EARTH while at the same time creating some marvelous works of ART! Drone STEM Camp: Junior Drone Pilots Junior Drone Pilots is specifically designed for campers with little to no experience flying drones. We will use the safest and most reliable drone products on the market, including the Parrot™ drones for enhanced safety and most of all, fun. Campers will learn the basics of drone technology and safety before taking to the air. Through the use of iPad flight simulators and clear instructions on basic flying maneuvers, young Drobots’ pilots will experience a program filled with excitement, games, challenges, and learning. Campers work all week to prepare for the most enjoyable part of the week: the Ultimate Drone Games that include events such as: Tic-Tac-Drone, Drone Darts, Duck-Duck-Drone, and more. All campers go home with interactive workbooks and plenty of Drobots Company keepsakes and trinkets so the memories last long beyond the summer. Drone STEM Camp: Ultimate Drone Obstacle Challenge Ultimate Drone Obstacle Challenge is specifically designed for both the novice and experienced drone enthusiasts. This week is filled with pure action as students enjoy one of the world’s fastest growing sports, Drone Obstacle Racing. Campers will first learn about the basic safety of drone flying and the history behind drone racing as a sport. From there, campers will progress through various skill challenges and learn how to perform various exercises and maneuvers to become familiar with the drone’s speed and agility. Campers will use iPads and remote controls to navigate the drone through short and long obstacle courses. Participants will also create the design and help build the obstacle course in preparation for the last day, final activity and competition. All campers go home with interactive workbooks and plenty of Drobots Company keepsakes and trinkets so the memories last long beyond the summer. Drone safety and the social responsibilities of flying drones are included in this program. Grades: 3-5 Instructors: Drobots Company Dates: June 17-21 Times: 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Fee: $325 STEM Camp: Bike Engineering Students participating in this session will have the opportunity to work in The Summit Country Day Exploratarium to learn how to use tools, take apart – clean – fix and reassemble bicycles. They will also be able to take their newly restored bikes out for a spin! Bikes will be donated to MOJO Cycling, a not for profit organization making good used bikes available to those who may not be able to afford one. Laffalot-Session II Laffalot Summer Camp offers kids a week of funfilled activities that will leave them smiling, exhausted and ecstatic. Grades 1-5 Session II Dates: June 24-28 Time: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Fee $185 Chinese Theater Camp Chinese Theater Camp is a highly-interactive program designed to provide students with the basic skills necessary for meaningful communication in Chinese. The teacher not only holds a state license, but also received 50 hours training in a powerful teaching method called TPRS (Teaching Proficiency through Reading and Storytelling). TPRS is an input-based approach to teaching language that focuses on the systematic instruction of vocabulary in a highly comprehensible, personalized and contextualized manner. The goal is to build fluency and confidence. Through props, gestures, movements, songs and rhymes, the students acquire the Chinese language naturally. What is more, the students will have opportunities to interact with young native Chinese speakers. By the end of the program, parents will be invited to watch kids perform “The Very Hungary Caterpillar”, “Winnie the Witch” or “Stone Soup” in Chinese. Grades: 1-8 Instructor: Bonnie Pang, Upper/Middle School Chinese Teacher, The Summit Country Day School Dates: July 8-12 Time: 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Fee: $200 Coding: Introduction to Game Development with JavaScript In this camp you will work with the language of Web Browsers, JavaScript to develop an interactive video game that will respond to mouse and keyboard inputs. The game will ultimately be published to the Internet where you can play it and show to others.


As part of developing this game you will also create your own custom game characters (sprites) so while the entire class will create the same game, you will be allowed to customize the characters and even customize the game as time permits. Instructor: Mike Thomas, Computer Science Teacher, The Summit Country Day School Dates: July 8-12 Time: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Fee: $350 Happy Camper Reading Camp Make sure your camper is packed and ready for a week of reading adventure! During this week we will begin our day by reading a beloved and acclaimed picture book. This book will be our springboard for a day of fun and learning! Diving into our imagination, we will use art, games, songs, and even baking to practice literacy and math skills that all tie back to a fantastic story. Students will look forward to the big reveal each afternoon as we find out which book will guide our day. Each day will be a new adventure! At the end of camp, your “happy camper” will have a backpack packed full of literacy skills! Grades: 1-4 Instructor: Connection Academics Dates: July 8-12 Time: 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Fee: $200 ACT Test Preparation This one-week course is ideal for students in grades 9-12 who plan to take the ACT on July 13, 2019. The class meets on the five days leading into the test, and will offer intensive preparation on all four sections of the ACT: English, Mathematics, Reading, and Science. All students will receive valuable feedback and personalized instruction based on their relative strengths and weaknesses. The class will break for lunch. Though the six-hour class may seem long, it actually moves very quickly and energetically, and lets students cram all the work of a months-long evening course into one week. It is half the price of most national test-prep offerings. IMPORTANT NOTE: Students who take this class should sign up for the July 13 ACT before the June 14 registration deadline (June 24 for registration with a late fee). Students may register at act.org. It’s Cool 2B Kind –Service Camp During this week of service learning camp, students will take on community service projects that aim to improve the lives of the people and animals in our neighborhoods. Trips will be taken each day, throughout our city to locations where service projects will be completed. You will not only lend a hand, but this week will also provide opportunities for leadership and personal growth. Need service hours for your school organization? No problem! Our teachers will track and sign your form at the end of the week. Instructor: Laura Dennemann, Middle School Religion Teacher, The Summit Country Day School Date: July 15-19 Time: 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Fee: $300 Maker’s Space: Living and Adapting to the World of Today Description: The focus of this camp will be problem solving and critical thinking. The topics that will be covered and applied will be environmental science, alternative fuels and living, and creation of tangible products and/or methods. Building and experimenting to make our lives and the world a better place will be the root of this camp. Ages: 9-17 Instructor: Bret Miller, Upper School Biology Teacher, The Summit Country Day School Dates: July 15-19 Time: 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Fee: $300 Study Skills Sharpener- #StudentSuccess This social media-themed course will teach students HOW to learn and their own individual learning style. Students will leave the course with multiple strategies for success in any subject! Topics will include: note


taking, student strengths, organizational skills, study skills and test-taking tips. Students will also learn how to put down the phone and make the most of their study time. The course includes a parent night at the end of the course to include families and review strategies to support your student throughout the school year. Students will end the week with their own “Guide to Student Success” binder that is theirs to keep. Grades: 4-8 Instructor: Connections Academics Date: July 22-26 Time: 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Fee: $250 CSI-The Mystery Machine Who stole Mrs. Norton’s Diamonds!? In this course, students will act as detective as they try to solve the crime of who stole Mrs. Norton’s luxury diamonds! Students will have to compare finger prints, look at crime scene photos and even listen to interviews to help solve the crime. Different clues will be left across the campus for students to work together to find them. Throughout the course, students will also have mini mysteries and team building activities to help strengthen teamwork and problem-solving skills. Grades: 1-4 Instructor: Connections Academics Dates: July 22-26 Time: 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Fee: $200

Robotics: First Tech Challenge (FTC) FTC is a global competition where students build and program robots to complete specific tasks. Most students are in grades 9-12, some compete as early as middle school. Many schools in Cincinnati have teams and there are also independent teams with homeschooled and teams composed of students from multiple schools. While building and programming the robots is a big part of the FTC competition, there is a lot more to being a successful team. Teams are judged on their “pit” or display area, their engineering notebook, their community outreach and the manner in which they compete and cooperate with their competition. This camp will explain the entire FTC infrastructure and prepare students who may want to join a FTC team in the future. This will include: the build process, the coding process, the engineering notebook and project management skills, community outreach and lessons about game day and how the competition works. The focus will include technique, strategy, sport specific strengthening, speed and agility. Understanding and implementation of drills, exercises and approach will be used to reinforce instruction and applied individually to each camper for improvement and will be based on their skill level. Each camper will be provided with a complete assessment and training guide at the end of the camp. Ages: 9-17 Instructor: Bret Miller, Upper School Biology Teacher & Baseball Coach Dates: July 22-26 Time: 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Fee: $ 200 College Essay 101 This class is designed for incoming seniors, especially those who plan to apply early to colleges and would like to get a head start on the application process. Students will: 1.) Learn what college admissions personnel are looking for in a college essay, 2.) Develop topics, outline, write, edit, and revise their college essays, 3.) Benefit from the knowledge and experience of college counseling and a veteran


English teacher and school administrator in regard to the college application process, 4.) Enjoy a productive environment with motivated peers all working towards their personal goals, 5.) Have at least one college essay completed by the end of the course! Topics can range from comedy to action to adventure. It is up to your imagination! Campers will focus on creating a script and filming it throughout various location in and outside the school. We will also be editing, adding special effects and music. Campers can post their projects online for the world to see! Campers will enjoy an afternoon field trip to see a movie during the week. *A camper may wish to take this second session to work on a second movie project to advance their skills in editing and short film creation. Middle School Band Camp: Grades 5-8 This camp is open to all students in the Cincinnati area who have played an instrument for one year or more. Get ready for fun as we work on music theory, composition, conducting and of course, playing your instrument! Summit Country Day School Band Director Bob Browning will lead the fun. Parents, be sure to plan on attending the last day performance on Friday, August 2. Instructor: Bob Browning – Upper School/Middle School Band Director, The Summit Country Day School Dates: July 29-Aug. 2 Time: 9 a.m. to noon Fee: $180 High School Placement Test Prep Course: Grade 8 Every November, the HSPT is given to thousands of eighth grade students applying for admission into area Catholic high schools. Most students do not properly prepare for the test even though the exam affects the admission process and scholarship opportunities for some schools. This preparation course will focus on test-taking strategies and content area instruction. Students will have some work to prepare in between the scheduled class times. All instructional sessions will be in an Upper School classroom under the direction and supervision of Upper School Guidance Counselor Michael Fee and other teaching specialists in the area of math and language arts. Attendees in the course averaged a percentile score of 84th percentile and 58 percent of the attendees scored 90th percentile and above. Jump Start Reading We use the Orton-Gillingham multi-sensory methodology to foster reading, writing, and spelling.Word attack skills, reading concepts, and logical thinking of students are strengthened. They learn to strategize through interactive language games and activities. Creative writing prompts exercise these skills. Reading and phonic games are played on the interactive Activboard. Students get a jump-start on computer lab skills while practicing reading and writing. Grades: K-2 Instructors: Sherry Schneider, M.ED., and Molly Fine, M.Ed. Dates: July 29 - August 2 Time: 9 a.m. - Noon Fee: $300 Jump Start Math This math course allows students to strengthen math concepts, think creatively, and develop problem-solving skills. They use interactive games and activities for addition and subtraction. The games include Montessori math as well as materials to help with number sense, patterns, symmetry, algebra, and other math processes. Students learn about architecture and then develop their own cityscapes. Legos are used as manipulatives to enhance knowledge about shapes and symmetry. Students receive a jump-start on computer lab skills while practicing math. After being introduced to the 3-D printer, students make their own creations. Dates: August 5 - 9 Time: 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Fee: $300 Percussion Power! Students entering grades 6-8 with one year or more of drum, percussion or piano experience are welcome to participate. Students will learn the proper playing techniques for the snare drum, bass drum, marimba and timpani, as well as the various orchestra auxiliary instruments such as cymbals, triangle and tambourine. In addition, students will be introduced to various ethnic percussion traditions, especially Latin America and West African, playing various instruments including bongos, congas and various shakers and rattles. Students will learn how to read pitched percussion

to perform on the marimba and will be grouped into ensembles to work on music for performance. Students will give a short performance on Friday to demonstrate their pieces for parents and friends. Grades 6-8 Instructor: Bob Browning – Upper School/Middle School Band Director, The Summit Country Day School Dates: Aug. 5-9 Time: 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Fee: $180 Study Skills and Life Skills: Grade 9 Transitioning from middle school to high school is a daunting task for many students. How can we better equip our children to be successful in high school? This course will offer some “secrets” to success, not only in high school, but ultimately life. Taught by a member of the Upper School faculty, students will strategize together about time management, organization, note-taking and critical reading comprehension. This course will fill up quickly so early registration is advised. Maximum of 20 students per session. In today’s world, typing is an essential skill. Through Type to Learn 4, students will participate in intensive keyboarding instruction, corresponding typing practice and typing activities. Type to Learn provides sequential typing instruction in an engaging and interactive format. Parents and students will be provided with progress reports at the end of each day to see where the student is excelling and where additional practice is needed. The Details Sign In/Out: Campers must be signed in at the designated drop-off areas and signed out by an authorized adult when they leave each day. If they are not picked up they will be sent to After Camp Care where a late fee will be assessed. Extended Day: We offer child care before and after camp for an additional fee. This care is from 8 - 9 a.m. and from 4 - 5 p.m. This option can be selected during online registration. Dress: The appropriate dress for most days will be shorts, T-shirt, tennis shoes and socks. Sandals are discouraged since they may pose a safety hazard with the gym or outside activities. Snack: Snacks and drinks are provided throughout the day. If your child is staying all day, students will need to bring a packed lunch and a drink. Health Forms: All participants (including current Summit students) are required to have a current health form on file. Please complete the health information section on the registration site. It is the parent’s responsibility to notify Summer Camp staff, via email, of any allergies or required medications. Please also confirm this at the time of drop off. Email the camp administrator at nicholson_l@summitcds.org. Photographs: We will be taking many photographs of the children throughout camp to use for future publications. Please be sure to let us know if you do not want your child photographed. Your Summer registration includes a photo release that allows for us to do so, unless notified otherwise. Cancellation: The Summit reserves the right to cancel any class or summer day camp. Fees will be refunded if a class or camp week is canceled. Partial Attendance: No refund or reduction in fees is possible for a child who arrives late, leaves early or attends only part of a session. Refund Policy: Refunds will only be granted if the request is made in writing to The Summit business office prior to May 30, 2019. *Children are to be fully independent with toilet use to attend. The teachers will not have the facilities or ability to change diapers or training pants.
