The Summit Country Day School is happy to say that 2017 will be a ….Summit Summer! We provide All day programs from 6/4-8/10 for children in preschool-grade 8. Our program is fresh and packed full of fun for all children. Additionally, we have programming for High School students both for school credit and just an opportunity to explore a subject. Our signature Traditional Day Camp will service those ages 3-current Kindergarteners. There are 9 weeks of Summer, each week hosting a theme and one field trip. They will join the fun from 9-4 each day from M-F for any week. There will be smiles everywhere as we explore the Arts, cooking lessons, get outdoors and unplugged, make movies, go treasure hunting and much more. Extended Day will be offered beginning at 8:00 a.m. and again after camp, from 4:00-5:00 p.m. For grades 1-8 we have a menu of choices for kids to ‘Pick Your Fun’. Robotics, Laffalot, Harry Potter Camp, Service Camp, Volleyball, and
much more. You won’t believe how much fun we are packing into one Summer! Current Summit Montessori children ages 3-6 are invited to keep and advance the skills from during the school year. Four separate weeks of half-day Montessori classes are being offered and will be taught by Summit Montessori teachers. Toddler Bridging is designed for current Summit toddler students that will be making the transition to the 3-6 classroom in the Fall. Toddler faculty will continue the Montesssori Toddler Curriculum while beginning to introduce to introduce and transition students to the larger classroom. Lunches will be held outdoors, when the weather permits. We will move the fun to one of our three gymnasiums if needed. We have sessions in the ‘Pick your Fun’ age groups for full day from 9:004:00 or Half-day from 9:00-12:00 or 1:00-4:00. You bring your lunch, we bring the fun!

What’s Cooking Get ready to measure, mix and stir up a good time! Along with cooking and art projects, campers will be tasting lots of different exotic and delicious ingredients. Making good food choices, basic nutrition and healthy after-school snacking alternatives will be taught. Your camper will leave with all the recipes from the week to repeat the fun at home. A field trip to LaRosa’s to make your own pizza completes the week. A perfectly delicious week!
ArtWild Creativity runs wild here all week long! Explore the arts and enjoy music, art lessons, games, stories and tons of smiles, laughs and fun. Parents will enjoy you sharing your one-of-a-kind creations as you channel your inner Monet! A field trip will highlight this week of imagination!
Week 3 Dates: June 18-22 Time: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Fee: $325 Construction Fun Love trucks, buildings, and machines? Construction week is for you! Pulleys, levers, hydraulics, gears, will be part of the week’s learning. Come and learn about fork lifts, cement trucks, dump trucks, back hoes, cranes. Building materials and work time will be paramount in the week’s schedule. Each child will need to bring one medium sized cardboard box or one large one (not too large). We will attempt to make a little village with our boxes. A field trip is under construction to top off this week.

Superhero Academy Boom! Pow! Wham! ! Young superheroes unite! Learn about the heroics of famous superheroes (and supervillains!), invent your own super character and save the day! We’ll design costumes, create superhero powers and follow our own code of superhero behavior. Dive into fun and games, art projects, story adventures, obstacle courses and more. A fun trip to a super spot to practice your best hero skills will end the week.
Week 5 Dates: July 9-13 Time: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Fee: $325 Oceans of Fun! Ready to explore the deep blue sea? Learn where oceans are found on Earth and about the animals that live in them. Focused on the Ocean and everything that swims, floats, or lives nearby, this week is full of fun and water. Craft with star horses & seashells, and enjoy games with an ocean theme. Our field trip will take us to our favorite water spot to look for some creatures we have learned about this week.
Week 6 Dates: July 16-20 Time: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Fee: $325 Barnyard Bonanza YEE-HAW! From “hoe-downs” and haystacks, to pigs and ponies, with lots of fun in between. Barnyard animals will be the inspiration for fun, creative activities and games this week. Learn all about farm favorites and taste some home grown goodness! Our week will be complete after a trip to our favorite farm!
Week 7 Dates: July 30 to August 3 Time: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Fee: $325 Pirate & Princess Treasure Hunt Ahoy Matey! Learn to use a treasure map and hunt for gold during this fun-filled week. Pirate hats, crowns and treasure chests will be crafted and parrot games, pirate feasts and jeweled necklaces will all lead to the ultimate treasure. Bring your best Pirate or Princess voice and get ready for fun!
Week 8 Dates: July 30-Aug. 3 Time: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Fee: $325 Outdoors and Unplugged Get outside and explore nature this week. Enjoy hiking and discovering small items in nature, while leaving the environment as it was found. Enjoy lunch in a tent, a campfire, play games and sing songs all about your home on the range. Camping is so much fun! Toasted marshmallows and s’mores? Yes, Please!
Week 9 August 6-10 Time: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Fee: $325 Under the Big Top Calling all clowns-Join us under the big top for a week full of good times and silliness. Walk a tightrope, win at ring toss or circus bingo. Make circus crafts and recreate life in the carnival. We may even get to see some retired circus animals on our field trip! Each week listed is from Monday-Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Fee is $325 per week. Extended day is also available before and after camp. Please see online registration for details.
Summer Montessori and Toddler Bridging Summer Toddler Bridging Toddler Bridge (ages 2-3) is designed for current Summit toddler students that will be making the transition to the 3-6 classroom in the fall. Toddler faculty will continue the Montessori Toddler curriculum while beginning to introduce and transition students to the larger classroom. Mornings will be spent in both the toddler and 3-6 classrooms. Weeks will be “themed” for more of a “summer fun feel”. As a reminder, children entering the 3-6 classrooms in the fall must be using the toilet independently. Toddler Bridge provides a wonderful opportunity for your child to become more confident in this skill before beginning the school year. Each week of Toddler Bridging class will be limited to the first 12 students enrolling. Daily Hours: Monday–Friday, 9:00 a.m. to noon
Summer Montessori Current Summit Montessori children age 3-6 are invited to keep and advance the skills which they worked so hard to achieve during the school year. Four separate weeks of half-day Montessori classes are being offered. This class will be taught by Summit Montessori teachers. The Montessori philosophy and materials will be those with which your child is familiar. Young children must be able to use the restroom independently before admission to Summer Montessori. The focus and purpose of this class is to provide a consistent framework for children in order to support the skills foundational to the Montessori Method of education. Whether you want your child to attend one week or all four he or she may be able to retain more of the skills and knowledge by being able to practice those skills throughout the summer. Each week of Summer Academic Montessori class will be limited to the first 24 students enrolling. Week 8 – July 30 – Aug. 3 Cooking- Explore nutrition through your taste buds! This week we will check out the happenings of the kitchen. We will make our own healthy snacks to enjoy while learning the basics of cooking and baking. We will make one item per day to round out the food pyramid. This is a fun way to introduce the importance of nutrition and eating wellbalanced meals.Fee: $340 Week 9 – August 6 -10 Science- We will foster your child’s sense of curiosity through hands-on science exploration. The easiest (and most exciting) way to learn about science is to make it happen yourself! During this week of Bridge, we will be conducting our own science experiments to explore the world around us. Pick Your Fun!
Upper School Health: Grades 9–12 Successful completion of this course satisfies the graduation requirements of The Summit as well as the state of Ohio by earning 0.5 credits. The summer health class would meet the typical 60hour course duration. The course includes all material covered in the semester class and includes a variety of assignments and assessments, including a comprehensive final exam and a research project. The workload is heavy and requires extensive reading and memorization. Students may expect to work up to four hours each day outside of class time and should plan for full days of study over each weekend. Course credit requires a specific number of contact hours with the instructor and therefore students must be present for each session. Any student who misses more than 240 minutes (equaling one day) for excused or unexcused reasons will need to repeat the course during the school year. Minimum of seven students required. Registrations will be taken up to a maximum of 18 students. This class will meet for four hours per day. Please feel free to bring snacks, drinks or lunch to the class. Instructor: Beth Simmons Dates: June 4-22 Time: 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Fee: $750 CP U.S. Government: Grade 11 This course is based upon the curriculum set forth by the Common Core. This is a single semester course that is a graduation requirement. Students successfully completing this course will receive 0.5 credits. The material covers the Constitutional underpinnings of our government and how Supreme Court interpretations, along with historical and political changes, have shaped the nature of our government. Time: 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Fee: $750 College Essay 101 This class is designed for incoming seniors, especially those who plan to apply early to colleges and would like to get a head start on the application process. Students will: 1.) Learn what college admissions personnel are looking for in a college essay, 2.) Develop topics, outline, write, edit, and revise their college essays, 3.) Benefit from the knowledge and experience of college counseling and a veteran English teacher and school administrator in regard to the college application process, 4.) Enjoy a productive environment with motivated peers all working towards their personal goals, 5.) Have at least one college essay completed by the end of the course! Campers will learn how to create a character, script a scene and draw action panels with narration. During one day, campers will meet an actual local comic book artist! Then this is the place for you! Students will learn how to use sensors in the course
of solving exciting missions with LEGO Mindstorms robotics. They will analyze challenges and work on forming, programming and executing plans to complete them. Instructors: Joy Parker & Michelle Sullivan Dates: June 4-8 Time: 9 a.m. to noon Fee: $200 Summer Studies in the Latin Language Castra Latina! Grades 7–12 This Latin Camp is a three-week intensive study of the various disciplines in Greek and Roman studies. It is intended for motivated students, but remedial instruction is also available. The session is especially useful for students who plan to attend the National Junior Classical League Convention at Miami University (Oxford OH) from July 23-28. It is 15 days in all, Monday through Friday, June 11 to June 29. Each fourhour day (8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.) is roughly divided into 4 parts: • The first part of the morning (8:30 to 9:30 a.m.) is devoted to an independent study topic from classical civilization. Each student will pick an area of interest and explore it in greater detail. • The second part of the day (9:30 to 10:30 a.m.) focuses on the study of the Latin language. Whether beginning or advanced, students will improve their comprehension of Latin vocabulary, grammar, syntax and translation through individualized instruction and small, student-led classes. • The third part (10:30 to 11:30 a.m.) is a group session where the students will read excerpts from Greek and Latin authors to gain insight into GrecoRoman mythology, history and culture. • In the final part of the day (11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.), students again return to their independent study topics. This final period is also an opportunity for students to prepare for the various competitions at the national convention (Certamen, art projects, creative art practice, etc.) Students may come to any or all of the session days/ weeks. There is no problem with students coming for just a week, or arriving late or leaving early. The instruction will be geared towards ability and interest. Healthy Living: Grades 4-8 It is always the right time to promote an overall healthy lifestyle for youth. Campers will engage in running, leadership activities and have discussion based learnings on all things health and fitness. Each participant will leave with a personal plan to continue their training after session completion. Instructor: Kurtis Smith, Varsity Track and Cross Country Coach at The Summit Country Day School Dates: June 11-14 Time: 10 a.m. to noon Fee: $150 Movie Making Fun Students will brainstorm, scout locations, script, film and edit a video project. Topics can range from comedy to action to adventure. It is up to your imagination! Campers will focus on creating a script and filming it throughout various location in and outside the school. We will also be editing, adding special effects and music. On the final day of this camp, filmmakers will show their movie on the big screen to the other camp classes. Instructor: Brendan McEachern Dates: June 11-15 Time 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Fee $280 Laffalot Camp Laffalot Summer Camp offers kids a week of fun-filled activities that will leave them smiling, exhausted and ecstatic. Led by well-trained counselors, your child will spend the day playing high-energy sports and games that help them develop teamwork, build total body coordination, learn sportsmanship, improve interpersonal skills and enjoy friendly competition. Session I Dates: June 25-29 Session II Dates: July 16-20 Time 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Fee $185 Coding: Introduction to HTML HTML is the language use to create all web pages. In this class you will learn the components of a web page and the tricks for how to arrange them to format the words, display lists and graphics, play sounds, and link to other web pages. At the end of this class your page will be uploaded to the Internet for you to show to others. No prior experience required. Minimum age - rising 6th graders.
Instructor: Mike Thomas, Computer Science Teacher, The Summit Country Day School Dates: June 25-29 Time: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Fee: $280 CSI-Crime Scene Investigation Learn to be super science sleuths. Have fun learning about forensics, crime scene investigations, and crime lab chemistry as you perform many different experiments designed to show you just how those tricky cases are solved. Participants will: Dust for fingerprints, analyze handwriting, test for blood type using simulated blood, examine hair and clothing fibers, practice chemistry to identify mystery substances and much more. Participants will then use their skills to solve crimes of the century. Ages 8 – 12 Instructor: Sciensational Workshops for Kids Dates: July 9 - 13 Time: 9 a.m. to noon Fee: $160 ACT Test Preparation This one-week course is ideal for students in grades 9-12 who plan to take the ACT on July 14, 2018. The class meets on the five days leading into the test, and will offer intensive preparation on all four sections of the ACT: English, Mathematics, Reading, and Science. All students will receive valuable feedback and personalized instruction based on their relative strengths and weaknesses. The class will break for lunch. Though the six-hour class may seem long, it actually moves very quickly and energetically, and lets students cram all the work of a months-long evening course into one week. It is half the price of most national test-prep offerings. IMPORTANT NOTE: Students who take this class should sign up for the July 14 ACT before the June 15 registration deadline (June 22 for registration with a late fee). Students may register at act.org. Volleyball Camp Join us for some volleyball fun! Campers will learn fundamental volleyball skills: passing, setting, hitting and serving. They will get a chance to participate in fun volleyball games that are age-appropriate for their group. Campers will have a chance to work with Summit coaches, varsity volleyball players and alumni. Dates: July 9 to 12 Time: 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Fee: $160 It’s Cool 2B Kind: Grades 4-9 During this week of service learning camp, students will take on community service projects that aim to improve the lives of the people and animals in our neighborhoods. Trips will be taken each day, throughout our city to locations where service projects will be completed. You will not only lend a hand, but this week will also provide opportunities for leadership and personal growth. Need service hours for your school organization? No problem! Our teachers will track and sign your form at the end of the week. Play Quidditch and join in the escapades of Harry and his friends. Make an edible wand and brew some fantastic potions to drink. Let’s create and watch some amazing chemical reactions. You won’t believe your eyes when you watch a mirage appear! Wonder where the sorting hat will place you? Make cool crystals. Come join us where the magic of science, art, and literature meet. Harry, Ron, and Hermoine are waiting for your arrival. Instructor: Sciensational Workshops for Kids Dates: July 23-27 Time: 9 a.m. to noon Fee: $160 Coding: Introduction to Game Development with JavaScript In this class you will work with the language of Web Browsers, JavaScript to develop an interactive video game that will respond to Mouse and Keyboard inputs. The game will ultimately be published to the Internet where you can play it and show to others. As part of developing this game you will also create your own custom game characters (Sprites) so while the entire class will create the same game, you will be allowed to customize the characters and even customize the game as time permits. No prior programming experience required. Minimum age - rising 6th graders. The Amazing 4 in 1 Robot: Ages 7-12 Build your own interchangeable robot to take home with four unique modes Learn how the different gears work as you are building. You will be building the Cricket--a joy on six legs. Build the Beast. You will also build the Trailer--the little engine that could move forward thanks to its motorized transmission. Finally, the Grandpa-Bot Robot. It has huge eyes and is a bobble-head, gear driven robot. It is easy transforming between the four modes. Have fun building a wide range of additional robotic designs with the Robotic Building System--Sumo wrestling matches, races and much more. Robots built in this portion of the workshop are not taken home. Instructor: Sciensational Workshops for Kids Dates: July 30-Aug.3 Time: 9 a.m. to noon Fee: $170 Review of Algebra I Fundamentals: Grades 8-12 (Must be preparing to take Algebra II) This course is designed for any student who has previously taken an Algebra I course and wishes to review the essential skills and topics necessary for success in Algebra II in the fall. It is not necessary to be a Summit student to attend this course. Many times Geometry is taken after Algebra I and before Algebra II. This class will allow a student to refresh on topics including; basic operations with real numbers and polynomials, fractions/ratios/percentages, equation solving, solving inequalities, radical operations, functions – basic, linear and quadratic, graphing linear and quadratic functions including inequalities, factoring polynomials and quadratic expressions and multi-step problem solving. Time: 9 a.m. to noon Fee: $350 Middle School Band Camp: Grades 5-8 This camp is open to all students in the Cincinnati area who have played an instrument for one year or more. area Catholic high schools. This preparation course will focus on test-taking strategies and content area instruction. Students will have some work to prepare in between the scheduled class times. All instructional sessions will be in an Upper School classroom under the direction and supervision of Upper School Guidance Counselor Michael Fee and other teaching specialists in the area of math and language arts. Attendees in the course averaged a percentile score of 84th percentile and 58 percent of the attendees scored 90th percentile and above. daunting task for many students. How can we better equip our children to be successful in high school? This course will offer some “secrets” to success, not only in high school, but ultimately life. Taught by a member of the Upper School faculty, students will strategize together about time management, organization, note-taking and critical reading comprehension. This course will fill up quickly so early registration is advised. Maximum of 20 students per session. Join us for a day trip to East Fork State Park! Spend the morning hiking while learning some basic navigation skills using a map and compass. Then enjoy some fun in the sun all afternoon as we play on the beach and splash around in the swim area! This is a great chance to enjoy the great outdoors, be active, and make some fantastic memories. *In case of inclement weather, we will adapt our plan to include adventure activities indoors. In today’s world, typing is an essential skill. Through Type to Learn 4, students will participate in intensive keyboarding instruction, corresponding typing practice and typing activities. Type to Learn provides sequential typing instruction in an engaging and interactive format. Parents and students will be provided with progress reports at the end of each day to see where the student is excelling and where additional practice is needed. The Details Sign In/Out: Campers must be signed in at the designated drop-off areas and signed out by an authorized adult when they leave each day. If they are not picked up they will be sent to After Camp Care where a late fee will be assessed. Extended Day: We offer child care before and after camp for an additional fee. This care is from 8 - 9 a.m. and from 4 - 5 p.m. This option can be selected during online registration. Dress: The appropriate dress for most days will be shorts, T-shirt, tennis shoes and socks. Sandals are discouraged since they may pose a safety hazard with the gym or outside activities. Snack: Snacks and drinks are provided throughout the day. If your child is staying all day, students will need to bring a packed lunch and a drink. Health Forms: All participants (including current Summit students) are required to have a current health form on file. Please complete the health information section on the registration site. It is the parent’s responsibility to notify Summer Camp staff, via email, of any allergies or required medications. Please also confirm this at the time of drop off. Email the camp administrator at nicholson_l@summitcds. org. Photographs: We will be taking many photographs of the children throughout camp to use for future publications. Please be sure to let us know if you do not want your child photographed. Your Summer registration includes a photo release that allows for us to do so, unless notified otherwise. Cancellation: The Summit reserves the right to cancel any class or summer day camp. Fees will be refunded if a class or camp week is canceled. Partial Attendance: No refund or reduction in fees is possible for a child who arrives late, leaves early or attends only part of a session. Refund Policy: Refunds will only be granted if the request is made in writing to The Summit business office prior to May 30, 2018. *Children are to be fully toilet trained to attend. The teachers will not have the facilities or ability to change diapers or training pants. Campers should be independent regarding toilet use.
