BUTCHER IN BRIEF

We lacked the killer instinct against Swindon that we showed against Watford and Larkhall

Poole Town Ladies’ Head Coach on Swindon defeat and today’s FA Cup tie

T

his week we welcome Frampton Rangers Ladies FC to the Specsavers County Ground for our FA Cup tie and I’m looking forward to a competitive game. Our performance against Swindon Town two weeks ago left me a bit flat as we seemed to lack a killer instinct compared to the two previous games against Watford Ladies and Larkhall Athletic Ladies. The players played some really great football as a team in those fixtures. Moving on to this week, again I’m looking for a response from the ladies as I feel they owe themselves a performance to show what they are about. I said from the beginning we will have ups and downs, but there are no excuses for the last game, as even with players missing I expected a better performance. I believed it was a game we should have won. We’ve prepared this week for a tough game against Frampton Rangers and will give them respect as they won promotion last season. I’m looking forward to the match and hope we give the supporters a game to enjoy. 4

Players and coaches are starting to see the effort and commitment that needs to be given in this league

Poole Town Ladies’ skipper Becca Witherington on the season so far and the progress of the youth setup

he season so far has had a few ups and downs already. Although, I think it is to be expected with all the changes made. Now, things are starting to settle and players and coaches are starting to see what effort and commitment needs to be given in this league. I can only hope for great things this season. We have points on the league table and we have shown true grit and character in cups against big teams. We need to keep the intensity up in training sessions to be able to carry on building, not just the first team but the development team as well. We are even starting to gain a club philosophy and trying to apply this to the under 16s and under 14s girls teams we have at Poole Town Ladies. I’m very much involved with the under 16s this season and was so proud of their first game as they won 16-0. They are a really talented group of girls, so hopefully they can make the most of the player pathway we have at the club and progress up to the first team in the next couple of seasons. 5

Hi Sam, how do you feel the season is Man City? Phil Neville has already going so far? given us a call! It’s a massive learning curve. Sometimes it’s We had an unconvincing first game easy to forget how young the girls against Southampton but it was good actually are. The biggest eye opener for our new coaches and players who for me is the huge impact that social hadn’t competed at this level to see and pyschological aspects have on the benchmark of what to expect. the game. It’s not all about tactics! We went away from that game and worked on a few things in training which we took into our next game against Larkhall and came away with a convincing win.

We have some really good players and hopefully we can help create Poole Town’s future by developing them, then when they turn 16 they will be competing for my position!

We gave Watford a good game in the cup and showed ourselves that we can compete with great teams, we just need to go into every game with the right mentality to compete.

On the pitch you’re always running, how important is that work ethic?

Everyone should turn up to every game wanting to put in 100 percent. Very rarely will I last 90 minutes, All in all, I feel the season is going ok hence we have subs. I’d rather due to the number of changes that players put it all in for 70 minutes were made before the season kicked and then go off, not coast through off and things will only become more the game with lower work rate. fluent as the season goes on! FRAMPTON RANGERS TODAY’S OPPOSITION Winners of last season’s Gloucester Womens Division 1, Frampton Rangers Ladies were promoted to the South West Womens League (Eastern Division) for this campaign. The Bristol-based club has had just the start they would have hoped for, beating Trowbridge Town Ladies FC 4-0 in their only league game of the season so far. That positive goal difference sees them sitting third in the league ahead of their FA Cup tie with Poole Town Ladies.

GOALKEEPER COACH WANTED

Poole Town Ladies are looking to recruit a goalkeeper coach for the 2018/19 season, after Adam Travers stepped down from the position. If you are interested in the role or know someone who might be, please get in touch with Lisa Dootson-Gill on 07765439993. SWINDON TOWN LADIES Goals: Picton (2)

POOLE TOWN LADIES

When: Sunday 9 September

2 1 MATCHREPORT Where: Fairford Town FC

Goal: Miles

Poole Town Ladies suffered a 2-1 defeat to Swindon Town Ladies in their last league outing two weeks ago. The home side dominated the early exchanges, only failing to go in front thanks to a string of saves from Sam Chrippes and the offside trap. Their domination with the ball did pay-off in the second half, as Abby Picton got on the end of a free-kick delivery awarded to Swindon after Chrippes handled the ball outside the box. A way back into the game became more difficult for Poole when Picton met a low driven cross across the face of goal in the 75th minute to put Swindon 2-0 up. Rebecca Miles’ precise, powerful penalty - awarded for a foul on Faye Rolfe-Hawkins - offered potential for a tense final 12 minutes, but the Dolphins were unable to create any clear chances to earn a point. 9

The Wright Up Stephen Wright takes you behind-thescenes of our last away game at Swindon.

@SWright_AFCB

R

egular readers of this column might recall last season’s ‘The Wright Up’ consisting almost exclusively of silly comments made on the trips to away games. With the departure of my travelling trio of Josh Jones-Keen, Alvin Gunputh, and Adam Travers, I feared the days of such joy were over. Thankfully, this was not the case, as my new comrades Steve Butcher, Becca Witherington, and Sam Gubb - provided some great material on the way to Swindon. Steve told us more about his love for currys (the dish not the PC store), but admitted he would not use the toilet in a friend’s house had he had consumed one the night prior. Meanwhile, new Under-16’s coaches Becca and Sam confessed that they had turned down roles at David Beckham’s Inter Miami as the club couldn’t afford their wages. All this, soundtracked to some decent tunes courtesy of Blink-182 and Oasis, helped the two to three hour journey pass by at pace. Our driver and lead passenger got so invested in Vanessa Carlton’s ‘A Thousand Miles’ - made famous by the 2004 crime/comedy thriller White Chicks - that we missed the turning for the ground. 10
