Last weekend’s game was the biggest low I’ve ever had in coaching
BUTCHER IN BRIEF
Poole Town Ladies’ Head Coach reflects on last weekend’s defeat
L
ast weekend’s game was probably the biggest low I’ve ever had since I’ve been coaching, even lower than losing a cup final when I was with AFC Bournemouth girls. The way in which we lost, conceding goals when controlling the game, was not great after putting on a substitution. So, lessons learned and in future I may not change the team unless needed, but I will be looking at the players and will change the starting line up. As you know, I don’t have knee jerk reactions but do feel I need to look at certain areas on the pitch that need strengthening. This week we are hosts to Southampton FC who play a league below us but pose a big threat as they’re part of the Premier League club’s setup. I’m expecting probably our biggest challenge to date and I really don’t know much about them or how they are doing, but I’ll concentrate on our play while giving Southampton the respect they deserve. I look forward to the game.

We know Southampton are very strong, but we’ll go out there and battle to get to the next stage of the cup

CORNER
Poole Town Ladies’ skipper Becca Witherington on the excitement of FA Cup action, and looking to advance to the next round
I
love the FA cup, it’s always full of pure passion and pride of players and their clubs. Today is going to be no different. We know that Southampton are a very strong side as they are proving to be firm favourites for the promotion of their league. But we will go out there and play our game and enjoy the moment of playing at this stage of the cup, and will be battling it out to get to the next stage. I don’t believe the club has gone past this round before so we will be hoping to make history! 5

Hi Sacha, how do you feel the season What did you learn from last week’s is going so far? painful defeat? We’re still in the process of gelling as a team and finding out what system suits us best. At times we have nailed it and at others it has simply not worked out for us.
It was definitely a hard one to take; gutting to accept to be honest. We battled so hard and then all of a sudden it just slipped away. I think we need to learn to keep our heads for the whole 90 minutes in future It’s hard because we don’t always as results can quickly turn on their have the same players available week heads - just like last week! in, week out so we’re having to put people in different positions just Who do you compare yourself to? to get by! I’m sure we will have it sussed soon. I’d probably say someone like Toni Duggan. Although, I absolutely love We’ve already won twice in the how Eden Hazard plays and I try to FA Cup to get to this round, but copy his runs at times, but the man is Southampton are top of the tier a genius and ain’t nobody got time to below us so it should be a close be like that! game. What are you expecting? What do you get up to in life outside I know Southampton have a number football? of good players and have been doing well in their last few games. Sunday’s I work as a Personal Trainer so I am game will definitely be one to watch rather active with being in and out of as I’m certain both teams will be well the gym all week. I am currently into up for it! I’m expecting a feisty one! watching the Netflix series Making A Murderer and taking notes on it!

SOUTHAMPTON FC TODAY’S OPPOSITION
ROAD TO THE FIRST ROUND
Southampton FC is a Regional Talent Club playing in the fifth tier of the women’s football pyramid.
POOLE TOWN LADIES
Saints have got off to a flyer in the Southern Region Women’s Football League, taking maximum points with four wins from four games.
7 Oct - Eastleigh (A) - Won 2-1
Even more impressively, today’s visitors have conceded only once in the league while putting 25 goals past the opposition so far this season, keeping them three points above AFC Bournemouth CST. With Southampton at the top of the fifth tier and Poole near the bottom of the fourth, today’s cup tie should be a close one on paper. Saints had to win four preliminary/qualifying games in the FA Cup to make it to today’s first round proper.
23 Sep - Frampton Rangers (H) - Won 3-1
SOUTHAMPTON FC 26 Aug - Winchester City Flyers (A) - Won 2-0 9 Sep - Swindon Spitfires (A) - Won 6-0 23 Sep - New Milton Town (H) - Won 5-0 7 Oct - Larkhall Athletic (H) - Won 4-1

BRISLINGTON LADIES
When: Sunday 4 November
3 5 MATCHREPORT Where: Dorset FA County Ground
Poole Town Ladies looked like they were on their way to salvage a precious three points for only their second win in the league last Sunday, but a late Brislington comeback denied the Dolphins of a result. Polly Wardle put the away side in front, before Faye Rolfe-Hawkins equalised with a clean, side-footed finish after being played through by Jess Fowell. Poole made their lead more comfortable in the second half, Hollie Agombar getting on the scoresheet and Rolfe-Hawkins rounding the ‘keeper to make it three, but a devastating finale beckoned. Brislington netted four goals in the final 13 minutes to claim a famous victory, despite Poole looking comfortable with such a short period of the game to go. The defeat keeps Poole in 10th in the league, two points above Maidenhead. 9
