Poole Town Ladies’ Head Coach on the season so far and learning from mistakes

T

he last few games have been up and down with an unsettled squad due to injuries and illness, which has resulted in players playing in unusual positions to try to keep the side balanced. Performances have not been what I’ve expected, but due to the squad changes they are understandable. There’s been some good football along the way but we lack consistency and haven’t really been that consistent since the Eastleigh game. We played Cheltenham last time out who are second in the league and at times I thought we did well, but we gave the ball away too often and too easily and we paid the price. We host Brislington today and I don’t know much about them but I expect another tough game as, from what I’ve seen, there aren’t any easy games in this league. But, hopefully this weekend we will have a full squad to choose from so training this week has been focused on fixing the mistakes made last weekend. 4

I really believe we can get a positive result from the game and start getting more points on the table

Poole Town Ladies’ skipper Becca Witherington harks back to the Dolphins’ previous encounters with Brislington Ladies

T

his week we welcome Brislington. Last season we found them to be a strong team and we had to work hard to try get the results we wanted. This season will be the same again, I’m sure. We need to focus on the simple things to come away with a win today. We are still ironing out the wrinkles with the new set up but I feel that we are now starting to settle down and are finding our feet. With determination, hard work, and team work I really believe we can get a positive result from the game and start getting more points on the table. In the last match, we had a heavy defeat but it was lovely to see some players making debuts from our development team. We continue to take positives from each game and continue to learn from the mistakes we have made. Those are all things great squads build from. I’m really looking forward to the game! 5

Hi Hollie, how do you feel the season is going so far? We’ve played quite a few cup games which have been hard, but we managed to give them our best shot and in some cases come away with good wins. Although, this has knocked our rhythm in our league games, which isn’t great, but I’m sure in the next couple of fixtures we can turn it around. Your goals have been crucial to Poole’s results this season – is an out-and-out striker your favoured position?

That’s a tough one considering the only team I watch is Spurs! I’d like to say Harry Winks, just because his work rate is phenomenal and I think I try to do that as much as possible. What do you like to get up to in life outside of football? I attend university in Winchester and work in an after school club in Eastleigh. If I’m not doing that, I’m either playing Call of Duty Black Ops on the PlayStation or hurling abuse at Tottenham!

Finally, Tottenham Hotspurs’ new ground was advertised as ‘the only I’ve never played up front so to place to watch Champions League score as many goals I have is great football in London,’ yet they may and especially managing to do so in get knocked out of the tournament the highest tier of football I’ve ever before the ground opens. How does played in! I’m slowly getting used that make you feel? to the idea of it being my favoured position. I’m aiming for 15 goals! Oh brilliant! Can I say no comment? If we get knocked out it’s all good How would you describe yourself as because we can drown our sorrows a player, or who would you compare in the new cheese room that our yourself to? chairman Daniel Levy has made.

BRISLINGTON LADIES TODAY’S OPPOSITION Like Poole, Brislington Ladies haven’t had the start to the season they would have hoped for. Today’s visitors come to County Ground off the back of two wins, one draw, and four defeats in the league, results that see them sit in seventh place on seven points ahead of the game. But scoring goals hasn’t been a problem for Brislington; a tally of 16 in the league so far this season is greater than any of the three teams above them. There’s not usually much to separate these two sides, and while Brislington edged out the wins on both occasions last season, Dolphins just beat the Bristol-based outfit to fifth place by a mere two points. This game could provide a big three points for the victors come the end of the season.

Last time out The Dolphins found themselves on the wrong end of a seven-goal thriller at Brislington in May. Debutant Alexis Bussell came off the bench and scored twice late on, but a comeback never materialised and the home side took all three points.

CHELTENHAM TOWN LADIES

When: Sunday 28 October

0 7 MATCHREPORT Where: Milborne St. Andrew

Cheltenham Town Ladies continued their title challenge with a convincing 7-0 win over Poole Town Ladies last Sunday. Cheltenham are now two points behind league leaders Southampton Women’s. Louise Fensome opened the scoring for the away side early on, before Annie Martin rounded the ‘keeper and placed the ball into an open goal for 2-0 18 minutes in. Further first half goals from Georgia Brown and Rose Knuckey gave the Dolphins a mountain to climb after half time. Cheltenham added insult to injury, Knuckey getting on the scoresheet again, before Sally Butterfield and Ella Hitchcox rounded out the scoring to give the away side another big win. The result kept Dolphins just above the foot of the table in tenth. 9
