The players seem comfortable with our system, we’re playing good football

BUTCHER IN BRIEF

Poole Town Ladies’ Head Coach recalls our last meeting with Swindon earlier in the season

T

his week we welcome Swindon to the Specsavers County Ground, who we lost 2-1 to last time out. The two games before that one saw us beat Larkhall and narrowly lose to Watford. The first Swindon game was disappointing in that we only had eleven players, including a sixteen year old playing ladies football for the first time. With a lack of defensive players for that game we played a different formation, but it didn’t work, so we changed it for the second half and improved. The players know they didn’t play well that day. Following that game, for a few months we struggled with player availability and that brought inconsistent performances, but we have recruited a few new players and others who were sidelined have started to return. We have changed our formation to reflect this and the players seem comfortable with it and are starting to play some good football. I said when I joined the club I won’t panic about results and said it would take 12-18 months for the players to settle in and play the football I want to play. This will hopefully filter down into the younger age groups as we have an U16s player who made her debut for the first team last Sunday and did extremely well. I look forward to another tough game this weekend and hopefully we can pick up some points. 4

We want another good performance, like we’ve had in the last two weeks

Poole Town Ladies’ skipper Becca Witherington says the Dolphins are confident of putting the wrongs right

L

ast time we met Swindon, it was for the the first time in a few seasons. I felt we had a jittery game, and that left us vulnerable. This time around, we are aiming to put things right.

We’ve been doing really well since that game, and feel we deserve to get three points. As always, we are all looking forward to the game today and will be looking to show another good performance, like we have done in the last couple of weeks. 5

BRICKWALL Poole Town Ladies’ ever reliable shot-stopper Sam Chrippes breaks down the season so far, and playing outfield!

Portrait Andrew Orman Words and interview Stephen Wright 6

Hi Sam, what’s your view of the if you pick the right pass you season so far? can initiate an attack. I think it also gives the defence a bit It’s been tough. As a team, we’ve of confidence too, knowing that had a lot of changes since last they can play backwards as well season, but as players we’re as forwards. starting to gel a lot better and we’re still learning and so is Versatile. Who has the most/ our manager Steve. There have best banter in the dressing been a few games that we have room? dropped points in where we maybe shouldn’t have, but those Tough one, I think I would say games have driven us on more Hollie Agombar. Maybe not the each week to improve. best but definitely the most, a great character to have around You’ve shown playing outfield pre-match. She always gets it that you’re not bad with your back though, especially if Spurs feet as well as your hands! How don’t win! important is that for a modern day goalkeeper? They never do! What do you like to do in life outside of football? I do tell Steve I can score but I’m not sure he believed me until We have been known to drive I did! It’s so important, you can miles for a game of crazy act as a sweeper, as an extra golf, down to Bristol, Bath and option behind the defence or Hastings! 7

SWINDON TOWN TODAY’S OPPOSITION For Swindon Town, today’s game presents an important opportunity to limit Poole Town’s advantge over them in the standings. The Dolphins are currently one place and a single point above Swindon, but Poole have two games in hand, so three points for either side could present a meaningful swing in their preferred direction.

League Table 1. Southampton Womens 2. Keynsham Town Ladies 3. Cheltenham Town Ladies 4. Chesham United Ladies

When the sides last met in Wiltshire in September, Swindon came out on top in what remains their sole win of the season, dispatching Steve Butcher’s side by two goals to one.

5. Buckland Athletic Ladies 6. Brislington Ladies

A late Rebecca Miles penalty for the visitors offered a glimmer of hope, but the Dolphins came away empty handed.

7. Larkhall Athletic Ladies

Since then, neither side have had the season they would have hoped for. Swindon have lost their previous four matches ahead of today’s game.

9. Poole Town Ladies

Poole go into the fixture on slightly better form, having picked up three points from a possible twelve across the same period of time.

8. Southampton Saints

10. Swindon Town Ladies 11. Maidenhead Utd Ladies

POOLE TOWN LADIES

WAREHAM RANGERS

When: Sunday 20 January

12 1 MATCHREPORT Where: Milborne St. Andrew

Results in the league haven’t been ideal for Poole Town Ladies this season, but cup football has presented more favourable outcomes. A 2-1 cup defeat to highly rated Watford Ladies in September began this trend, followed by a 3-1 win over Frampton Rangers Ladies, a 2-1 win over Eastleigh Ladies, and the latest result - an impressive 12-1 victory against Wareham Rangers in the Dorset County Cup. It would perhaps take less space to list the Poole players who didn’t score in the game! Nevertheless, a Faye Rolfe-Hawkins hat-trick, a brace from Katie Marshallsay, two for Sacha Paynter and Lauren Fraser, and another goal for top scorer Hollie Agombar wrapped up the convincing win. Even Sam Chrippes grabbed a couple of goals! Bev Symes also insisted that she scored four on Facebook, but given that she didn’t play I doubt that was the case. 9
