BUTCHER IN BRIEF

Portsmouth will be a very tough opponent as they’re in the league above, but we’re looking forward to it

Poole Town Ladies’ Head Coach on Frampton win and today’s cup tie

L

ast Sunday, we welcomed Frampton Rangers to the Specsavers County Ground in the SSE Women’s FA Cup. Frampton gave us a good game and took the lead early in the first half, which I believe was a wakeup call, as I feel our performance was out of character for us. The second half, after having a chat at half-time, was much better as a team but we still needed to capitalise on the chances we created. I do apologise to the supporters if I was very vocal. That is not the norm but was born out of frustration. This week, we welcome Portsmouth in what will be a very tough game for us as they are a league above, but one we are looking forward to, as it’s always a great challenge to play higher opposition and a very good team. As before, we won’t change the way we play as this is a season-long plan and we will have ups and downs throughout. Enjoy the game. 4

We went toe to toe with Watford in the Cup, so we feel we can prove ourselves again today

T

oday, we welcome Portsmouth for the FA Women’s National League Plate Competition. We went toe to toe with Watford in the FA Women’s National League Cup, but unfortunately a late goal for our opponents ensured their progress and meant that we would compete in the Plate. We would love to be able to go on to win the Plate but we know along the way we will face big teams, today’s being one of them. We played against Portsmouth in pre-season and we are looking to put right what went wrong in that game. We really do feel, off the back of the result against Watford, that we can really prove ourselves today and we hope that we can come away with that win. 5

PRECISION Poole Town Ladies’ dead-ball specialist discusses the season so far, Boring Milner, and the pains of receiving next door’s post

Hi Jess, how do you feel the season is I would probably compare myself to going so far? James Milner. He’s dependable, hardworking and getting on a bit! I am a We have had a very mixed start to strong believer of possession football the season with some superb highs and playing simple passes, even if it but also some gut-wrenching lows. means playing backwards. After all, Poole Town Ladies have had quite the other team can’t score if you a few changes this year, with both have the ball! the team and coaching staff, but we are slowly finding our feet and I feel What are your expectations ahead of like we are becoming stronger and this cup tie with Portsmouth Women? stronger with each game. They have a great set up and a very Some say your deliveries are more strong team. We are undoubtedly reliable than the Royal Mail. Are you the underdogs going into this match always working on your set-pieces in but that isn’t always a bad thing, training? especially in cup ties. We just need to play positively and try to make things I frequently receive next door’s post as difficult as possible for them. so I am not sure how to take that question. I would make a joke about What do you like to get up to in life the Royal Mail at this point... but I am outside of football? not sure you would get it! I would love the opportunity to work on set- I am a PE teacher and have always pieces in training. had a love of different sports. Alongside football I play tennis for a How would you describe yourself as local club. With all the sport, I find a player, or who would you compare staying hydrated is very important, yourself to? usually with a nice glass of prosecco or a large G&T! 7

PORTSMOUTH WOMEN Q&A

with Portsmouth Women Media Manager Ollie Cook

Hi Ollie, how is the season going so far? The campaign got underway in a very positive fashion with two comprehensive victories. A 6-0 win at Canvey Island on the opening day against C&K Basildon, and a 4-1 home win against Gillingham a week later. On the back of the two wins to start the season, Pompey Women lost four games in a row - despite positive performances throughout. The cup defeat to Chichester was a tough one to take, but it has meant that we are here this afternoon. Defeats to Coventry, Chichester, and Watford followed. But, Pompey returned to winning ways last Sunday with a very positive performance and result at Stadium MK against MK Dons, running out 3-1 winners. What is the objective for the club this season? The objective is always to better the points tally gathered in the previous campaign, something that this squad is on target to achieve this season. We always want to finish as high in the league as possible. The summer has brought many new faces into the club, with the new chairman Eric Coleborn, and several new faces on the pitch. The squad will take every game as they come and not get too far ahead of themselves. It’s always nice to have a cup run, and we are all hoping to go far in the Women’s National League Plate this season. What are you expecting from this cup tie against Poole? We go into every game with confidence, no matter who the opposition is, and it will be no different this afternoon. Poole are a side we played in pre-season, and dominated the game, walking out 8-0 winners on that occasion. I don’t know if Poole have added any players to the side since that game in pre-season, but we will go into the game looking to progress. 8

POOLE TOWN LADIES Goals: Agombar (2) Yeo

FRAMPTON RANGERS LADIES

When: Sunday 23 September

3 1 MATCHREPORT Where: Dorset FA County Ground

Goal: Todd

Poole Town Ladies advanced to the next round of the SSE Women’s FA Cup by beating Frampton Rangers Ladies 3-1 last Sunday. A Hollie Agombar brace, as well as an impressive strike from Becky Yeo brought winning ways back to Dorset. Frampton took the lead inside the first five minutes, Abi Todd lobbing Sam Chrippes to put the away side in front. The Dolphins responded with a birthday goal for Agombar, who met a Faye Rolfe-Hawkins cross after the latter had driven down the right wing. Poole capitalised on their dominance with 23 minutes to go, Agombar adding to her tally, before Yeo wrapped up the game with a fantastic volley. The win puts Poole through to the next round, where they have drawn Eastleigh away. The tie is set to be played on Sunday 7th October. 9

The Wright Up Stephen Wright looks at what’s going on in the world of women’s football

@SWright_AFCB

T

he plethora of issues facing women’s football as a sport have been well documented. From a lack of funds and re-scheduled fixtures, to a lower appetite for watching the game compared to the male alternative, equality continues to be an issue in the sport. That’s why it’s encouraging to see some sort of progress, even if only at the highest level, as the Scottish Government announced on Wednesday that all of Scotland’s women’s squad will be able to train full-time for the World Cup next year thanks to an £80,000 funding boost. For female pros, balancing multiple part-time jobs alongside their football careers can be a huge burden. Throw family life into the mix and there’s barely enough hours in the day to manage such a lifestyle. Here’s hoping for more good news like Scotland’s in the near future, so that more and more players, even further down the football league pyramid, can comfortably dedicate more time to the sport they love. 10
