Affordable 4WD-ing in the Bay Summer is on its way and you have a couple of mates coming in from overseas who are mad keen on surfing. But they are also wincing at how much less the exchange rate will allow them to buy when they switch to the not-so-humble Kiwi dollar for a few weeks of coastal fun. So, they’ll need a set of wheels that will get them through some of the rougher bits of coast to some of the more remote surf breaks, especially further south around Gisborne and Taranaki – where access is often off-road, through paddocks. Keep in mind too they are going to want to sell it when it’s time to head home. With a budget of less than $12,000, Bay Driver went out to kick a few tyres around the better car yards to see what was on offer. We soon appreciated this is a pretty scarce part of the market, but there are a few 4WD “diamonds in the rough” out there that would fit the bill just fine. There were also a couple that were in such good condition they would suit a family or tradesman admirably for a few years of rugged motoring.

Next up is Bob Batchelor Toyota on the main highway in Te Puke. The 1996 Toyota Surf turbo diesel has all the features on the Terrano and similar kms at 157,000. It is also an auto and comes with the renowned Toyota reputation for quality. It is free of the scourge of rust that plagued some early

First up at Car Connexxion on Cameron Road, is a ’97 Nissan Terrano, also known as the Pathfinder. They were renowned for their use of proven technology, bomb-proof diesel engines and good off-road ability – and have long been popular for pulling boats. This one is the higher spec model with the 3.1 litre turbo diesel engine and auto transmission. It has done 151,000km and comes with a towbar, sunroof, side steps, a couple of airbags and ABS. Packing down with power The ultimate collectors’ item for 2011 Rugby World Cup – an All Blacks Limited Edition Falcon XR6.

Between now and the Rugby World Cup kick off, there is an all-black forward pack at Ultimate Motor Group seeking new owners – and there will even be a reserve or two around to fill any gaps later in the season.

This particular “Ford” pack, of course, is made up of nine of the Limited Edition Ford Falcon XR6’s that have been specially created to celebrate the Rugby World Cup. With their All Blacks souvenir touches and Limited Edition extras, they not only stand out from their more “everyday” stable mates, but will also reward their owners long after the roar of the crowds has subsided in the World Cup event.

Dressed to impress

Special enhancements included on these Limited Edition cars include unique colour accents on the front grille and rear bumper insert, 18 inch alloys, a registered All Blacks logo on the front and side panels, leather seats and an All Blacks badged scuff plate on the door ledges. The exterior appearance is sharpened even further thanks to a deadly looking “Dark Stealth” grille that sits confidently between the headlights while chrome-rimmed driving lights complete an impressive front-on appearance. The Limited Edition is only available in black, white and silver. We would suggest black will be the more popular colour choice as it gives the XR6 a strong, handsome presence on the road. So, perhaps with its slick black paint job and nice Limited Edition tweaks, this model could well solve any family arguments over “dads car” versus “mum’s drive”. That’s because it achieves enough of a macho look without the bulging bonnets and arches that some of its pricier team mates come with – while delivering enough testosterone to

ensure the men in the family don’t feel they have compromised too much by not opting for the quicker XR6 Turbo or the full-on power of a V8. Besides, purchasing one of the “Ford Pack” supports the whole family’s favourite team.

Sure-footed power

The basics of transmission and engine remain the same in the Limited Edition as the standard XR6 and there is little reason to change those anyway. So, we have the same big 4.0 litre six cylinder petrol motor in this model. It may be something of a rarity these days, but still justifies its size with silky smooth power delivery from very low down, all coming nicely through the ZF six-speed transmission that also fits so well with the Territory. It is a big, torquey engine, with plenty of pull low down, generating 391Nm of torque while casually nudging only 3200rpm. For all that, it manages to deliver a silky smooth soaking of power through a chassis that feels tight and far from any compromise between ride acceptability and sports handling. It achieves both with particularly harsh pot holes and road surfaces, simply soaked up through the big machine’s body, while the “sports” experience comes through steering that is nicely direct and responsive. The whole driving experience has the car feeling glued to the road surface, belying its considerable size and 1700kg of weight. You will feel like you are piloting a car a third of its size.

Sense of luxury

The standard XR6 always felt like it was built around the driver, with everything fitting nicely seating-wise and controls all well within reach and easily understood. Add in the Limited Edition’s leather seating and that feeling is only enhanced. The seats are even

better clad in leather and that adds a sense of luxury to the sports experience that will be appreciated on the longer trips which this car would thrive upon. The interior is nicely finished, with the black piano insets around the dash, adding to the class established with the leather and the leather-bound steering wheel feels nicely weighted and comfortable in hand. There are also inputs for an iPod and MP3 player, with sound pouring through a wonderful Prestige sound system. Backing up is made a lot easier thanks to the inclusion of a reverse sensing system.

Superb leather seating adds a touch of luxury to the sports experience. Should you get any twinges of guilt about driving a big six in these straitened times, the back seating area will provide comfort for you. It offers acres of space for hours of stressfree motoring with family onboard and the boot is the typical cave you get on every Falcon. Overall, the Limited Edition probably closely reflects the modern All Blacks team it honours; it has plenty of grunt under the hood, is outwardly compact, very powerful looking and capable of drawing looks wherever it goes. New kids on the block Fans of mid-size SUV’s, the Ford Escape and Mazda Tribute, will soon have plenty to smile about when the new-generation models arrive at Ultimate Motor Group.

The first of the new models is the Mazda CX-5, smaller brother to the highly successful Mazda CX-7 and larger CX-9 models. It is the first of Mazda’s new generation models which will adopt the breakthrough SKYACTIV TECHNOLOGY. It will also showcase a new design theme for the Mazda range.

This new technology is set to be incorporated into both 2.0L petrol and 2.2L diesel engines in the CX-5 and there will be front-wheel and all-wheel drive variants. The SKYACTIV drivetrain introduces a new 113kW/194Nm direct injection two litre engine, combined with either a manual or six-speed auto transmission. The gearbox claims to combine the economy of a CVT transmission, with the responsiveness of a dual clutch gearbox. The CX-5’s new SKYACTIV lightweight chassis, combined with aerodynamic styling is also designed to deliver precise response and a high quality ride with outstanding environmental and safety performance. The CX-5 is the first model to showcase Mazda’s “KODO – Soul of Motion” design theme and leads the brand strongly into the next generation. From feedback received after its showing at the Melbourne Motor Show, the CX-5 definitely looks on track to make a big impact on the New Zealand market when it is launched in the early part of 2012.

Dedication sets apprentice apart from crowd By Laura Weaser

It is his attention to detail and hard-working attitude that sets Jonathan Nak apart from other apprentices in the MTA Apprentice of the Year competition says his employer Ray Fisher.

The 21-year-old is the only entrant from the Bay of Plenty; he is eagerly waiting to make the final selection next month. If he is selected on the top four for the ‘tool-off ’ – a head-to-head testing technical and mental skills – Jonathan has the opportunity to win the chance to work with Greg Murphy, racing in his workshop in Sandown, Melbourne. The Apprentice of the Year is an initiative run by the Motor Trade Association with assistance from MITO and WELTEC. The award recognises apprentices who are serious about their future and employers who are investing in the future and the skills of their industry. Currently working as an apprentice at George’s Auto service in Katikati, Jonathan says he studied as a mechanic because it was “in the blood”. “I was brought up around it. My family always had cars, cousins are mechanics – it was a backyard thing and it runs in the family so I wanted to do it.”

Jonathan studied at the Bay of Plenty Polytechnic and got offered the job at George’s straight after his course – saying he “must have done something right”. Ray agrees, saying it was Jonathan’s ability to sweep the floor correctly that was a dead giveaway to his work ethic. “I get lots of school kids wanting jobs here and I always say the first thing you have to do is learn how to sweep the floor properly. “I give them a broom and they sweep round in a circle before they go off to talk to the other guys. “Jonathan was different – he pulled everything out from the walls and swept the whole workshop and then came to ask me what to do next.” Jonathan has been with George’s Auto for four years and says the environment is what keeps him coming back. “It is the people you get to know through your work. Most of my friends are into this kind of stuff and they have interesting thoughts about it. You are constantly learning, all the new cars and technology.” His particular interest is in diagnostics and computers, but one day hopes to own his own workshop. The finalists for the MTA Apprentice of the Year tool off are announced in September.
