Field Days not just for farmers
Super deals on new vehicles over the coming months mean everyone can have a ‘field day’. For more than five years, the months of May, June and July have proved the most attractive times to buy a new vehicle – and not just utes and four wheel drives. Almost all of the new vehicle brands around the country spend weeks working out creative ‘deals’ to attract customers – along with some seriously good prices. Ebbett Tauranga Holden are part of the ‘Get in Behind’ nationwide campaign, featuring not just commercial Colorado utes, but also passenger vehicles such as Commodores and Barina Sparks at Field Days prices. David Johnson from Ebbett says things take a week or so to wind up, but the “deals on now are better than anything you can get”. Other deals include Mitsubishi with a ‘Get Decked’ offer that includes a free flat deck with the purchase of the Mitsubishi Triton

Cab/Chassis model. Bay Mitsubishi sales manager Aaron Chatfield says the sales during the 2-3 month period are “the same numbers of what we sell for the rest of the year”. “The really popular type tends to be the top of the range 4x4 double cab.” Mike Farmer from Farmer Autovillage says not just Field Days related cars are part of their huge sale. “As well as the Nissan Navara range, we have a lot of passenger vehicles that sell well. Typically these once a year specials are assisted by the manufacturer, and we expect a 20-25 per cent increase over the Field Day sales, so if someone is contemplating a new vehicle there couldn’t be a better time.” In conjunction with Field Days, SsangYong – a Korean ute manufacturer – is releasing a limited edition version of the Actyon Sport Double Cab ute with brand new factory extras, making it perfect for work and play.

Honda Civic V-Tec offers big car comfort with small sedan economy
The Honda Civic has long held a place as one of New Zealand’s favourite cars.
The Civic S is a super tidy sedan with excellent fuel economy and performance.
By Richard Rennie
From the hatchbacks that were popular with young and old throughout the 70s and 80s to today’s range of elegant sedans stacked with modern technology and safety features, the nation’s ‘love affair’ with the Civic continues unabated. It is easy to understand why when experiencing the drive in this week’s blackboard special – a 2006 Honda Civic S sedan from Trevor Lee Autos at 512 Maunganui Road, Mount Maunganui. While it may have just had its fifth birthday, the all-round immaculate condition of this car would lead you to think that it has been very well-cared-for – it really is a credit to the previous owner. This particular model has the super-efficient, and super-reliable, V-Tec engine and has only travelled a touch over 51,000km. The advantage of Honda’s acclaimed V-Tec technology is particularly apparent when extra power is needed for overtaking on the highway. This is achieved effortlessly and without compromising on fuel economy, which is 6.9L per 100km, a 4.5 out of 6 Star Fuel Rating.

The Civic S is a top-of-the-line model and comes complete with a whole host of factory standard options that you would not find on
a similar small sized sedan. These include rear parking sensors, cruise control, a high level of safety features including 6 airbags, a multistack CD stereo and steering wheel controls that make operating all of these ‘bells and whistles’ as easy as pie. Other highlights of this superb car include alloy wheels, a full set of near new tyres and a bonnet protector. Once seated in the driver’s seat, you notice that there is a lot more space inside than the exterior shows, – both in the front and rear seats. We also note that the upholstery is unmarked, in fact it is as fresh and neat as a pin. Handling is quiet and smooth through the manual transmission, and as previously mentioned, there is that added power from the V-Tec engine when you need it. The new owner will not be disappointed with the excellent ‘round-town’ fuel economy either.

Being inside also allows Trevor to present the cars in immaculate condition. “It’s not what some people might expect a car yard to look like”, he adds, “but it is clean and dry and I am open seven days for buyer convenience.” The range of vehicles on display varies widely with cars for under $5000 as well as a variety of higher grade models, like the Honda featured here. “While I don’t specialise in any one brand or price range,” says Trevor, “I can assure buyers that every one of the cars on display has been prepared by me to a high standard and also comes with a guarantee.” Trevor Lee Autos also offers customers easy finance options for their purchase through MTF Finance, Fraser Street branch and comprehensive warranties are available if required. Even on its 20” alloy wheels, the CX-9 cuts a sharp, low profile.
The new CX9 captures Mazda’s unfailing adherence to offering a sports-like experience in every vehicle, regardless of the model. When Mazda launched its CX-7 SUV four years ago, it was like letting a punk rocker take front row at a chamber concert. The relatively staid world of medium sized SUVs, with its established players in their snug sales positions, was suddenly shaken up by this rebellious, turbo-charged, sporty machine offering sports performance in a super luxury package. It was also wrapped in a body that oozed attitude and style and promised to make even the day care run a trip worth making just for the sake of the drive! It may not have grabbed the SUV carof-the-year title back then, but it certainly grabbed people’s attention. Mazda’s SUV offerings have matured since then, with the CX-7 now also available in a non four-wheel drive version and with a 2.5 litre engine. And now it has matured even more with the arrival of its ‘big brother’, the CX-9. One smart Alec actually suggested this big brother should borrow the label ‘BT’ from Mazda’s ute series and make it stand for ‘Big Truck’. But that would do it no justice at all. The CX-9 is a big SUV no doubt, powered by the silky smooth 3.7 litre V6 engine, but it does not shout out ‘great big SUV’ at first glance. It was not until parked stationary at the lights next to its little brother, the CX-7, that I fully appreciated how much larger it really is.
There is the length, for this is a true seven seater and a breadth which is appreciated more in terms of where it counts, as interior cabin space rather than extra exterior metal. However, despite being shod with big 20” alloys, it still manages to do what the CX-7 does so well – cut a low, sharp profile and deliver that sports-car-like experience. Here in New Zealand the CX-9 line-up is simple. There is only the one luxury model, fully spec’d and completely kitted with all the extras you might expect to find on a European style SUV at over twice the price.
compromised by pillar intrusion around their borders. In the back, passengers are going to appreciate the generous leg room, individual climate control system and the completely flat floor that enhances already generous sense of cabin space.
First class experience
…there is more! Right at the back, either for the friends, or the kids you don’t want fighting, the genuine seven seater really comes into its own. The back two seats, easily accessed with a pull latch, are not simply an afterthought. Taller adults could even tolerate them for shorter trips, while kids will thrive on having their own space right at the back, probably reducing the distraction factor for mums and dads up front. What about load space? I hear you ask. With those rearmost seats folded down, there is a very generous 930 litres of luggage room to fill. With them up, it is still an acceptable 270 litres with room for the friends and the Saturday sports gear. On the road, the sheer torque of the big V6 being delivered through all four wheels is obvious, there is a sense of sure-footedness that, when combined with the CX-9’s McPherson strut-multi-link suspension, delivers a thoroughly enjoyable driving experience. The big machine soaks up the bumps
The interior is a joy to drive, or be driven in. Mazda have always executed dash and control layouts well. I still maintain the layout on the Mazda 3 is one of the best ever in a car that deserves its current title of top selling vehicle in Australia, no less. That simple, smart design DNA carries through into the CX-9. The central console makes complete sense, while it is easy to programme and operate the quality Bose stereo system with MP3 compatibility and 10 (yes 10) speakers to crank up the aural quality. It is a blessed relief to slide behind the wheel into ultra-comfortable (and heated) seats and be able to simply dial up your favourite radio station, programme your mobile effortlessly into the Bluetooth system, and drive on without feeling like you need a degree in avionics. The cabin experience is first class. The glass area is generous with big side windows that fall well below shoulder height and don’t feel
Effortless controls and a superbly designed driving space feature.
Sensational load space and passenger comfort are highlighted in the sure-footed CX-9.
But wait…
The CX-9 is a true seven seater with extra space in the ‘first-class’ cabin.
more forgivingly than its little brother, but still feels suitably taut on twisty roads and corners. Drive the CX-9, even for a short time, and you may well find yourself wondering how to justify the many thousands more that could be spent on a more exotic European machine. With its high spec level and the practical usability of all those luxury features, the CX-9 may well be the dark horse in the SUV market… it may even prove to have sneaked past some high profile competition when the sales stats come out at the end of the year.

Simply stunning new Territory Visitors to the Tauranga Home Show got the first chance to inspect the latest addition to Ford New Zealand’s range – the all new Territory Titanium – displayed by the team from Ultimate Motor Group, Mount Maunganui. Previously known as the “Ghia”, this model is the flagship for the 2011 Territory range, which features either Ford’s new Duratorq TDCi turbo-diesel V6 engine or an enhanced six cylinder petrol engine. The turbo diesel is available in rear and all-wheel drive options – the petrol in rear-wheel drive only. Both engines deliver more power and more torque, while delivering less fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.
included an exhaustive re-design incorporating enhancements to its drive trains, structure, safety, suspension, steering, technology and levels of refinement and comfort. The new Territory also benefits from the latest generation safety features, which include dynamic stability control and traction control systems, as well as roll over mitigation (ROM). There are also additional airbags, an enhanced crash safety structure and most importantly the new Territory is credited with a five star ANCAP safety rating.
Further refinements
Drop everything. The Ford Fieldays sale is now on.
All models come with a six-speed automatic transmission, providing smooth, quick shifts and aiding the fuel economy on both the petrol and diesel engines. Fuel economy as low as 8.2L per 100km (combined cycle) was achieved during testing with the V6 turbo diesel, while a reduction of 1L per 100km over the previous model was achieved in the new 4.0L I6 petrol engine.
Refinements have also been made to the Territory’s handling, with the introduction of electric power assisted steering and a finelytuned suspension. In addition, the chassis frame is now lighter, but stronger than before. It offers a towing capacity of 2700kg (braked) with the turbo diesel and 2300kg (braked) on the petrol model. In creating the new Territory Titanium, Ford declares it has achieved its target – to provide enhanced agility, manoeuvrability and driving enjoyment with a comfortable ride. The high level of interest shown from those attending last week’s Home Show, indicates this new SUV will be a favourite among those seeking all of these features in a luxury package. Bookings for test drives are now being taken at Ultimate Motor Group, 150 Hewletts Road, Mount Maunganui. A broken axle can never bode well for a driver, let alone a driver whose position in the New Zealand Rally Championship rests on the strength of his car. By Laura Weaser
Tauranga motorsport racer Phil Campbell left the second stage of the national rally in Auckland an unhappy man after mechanical difficulties set the team back. “We broke an axle on Saturday and slowed the car down,” says Phil. “We lost time in service trying to fix it. With only 30 minutes to fix it and it took us 37 minutes, so had a couple minutes penalty. You do everything you can and replace everything often, but the axles breaking is just one of those things.”
Despite this, Phil was able to win a couple of stages, finishing third for the weekend in the New Zealand two-wheel drive class. “We are fast enough to win, just got to get the car to last.” The car is now in the shed, being worked on for the next race on May 28 to 29 in the Wairarapa. Phil is working on his fitness and practicing in order to achieve his goal – winning round three to put him in a “good position” overall. “The fitter you are the easier it is to go fast for a long time. Same with driving, the cars are all the same – Ford Fiestas – so there is not a lot you can do to them. The more driving you do, the faster you get. It is also just about being brave and working with the co-driver is the biggest thing, trusting the notes that they call and doing what they tell me to do.”
This is the 24-year-olds second national rally, achieving fourth overall last year, after moving to motorsport after 10 years on a motorbike. “I raced motocross bikes, but I got sick of being injured or having time off work. My Dad always used to have a rally car back when he was younger so I decided to buy one and have a go at it.” Phil says this national rally offered a new challenge of night driving, but says the rally itself was good going against just the clock. “It is good not having to worry about any other cars like they do in circuit. It is just me and the co-driver, no pressure of the other drivers. We know their times every time we get to the end of the stage so we know if we need to go faster.” The 2011 New Zealand Rally Championship continues through to August, with the final stage taking place in Hawkes Bay on August 20-21.
