Reducing the risk of accidents can be as simple as paying a bit more attention to a couple of the key things that keep cars safe on the road.

Firstly – tyres. Most days, people get in the car, turn on the key and drive off without giving the tyres much thought, but badly worn or incorrectly inflated tyres have been proven to be the cause of many accidents.

If your car is having trouble cornering or you are just unsure about whether they are in good enough condition to handle the wet weather, a quick stop at a specialist tyre centre will soon tell you if they need to be changed.

“Using the pressure gauges at a workshop like ours can give motorists a far more accurate reading than the ones at petrol stations,” says Alan Tennent, manager of Tyre Works at 67 Hewletts Road, Mount Maunganui.

“Our guys can quickly adjust the pressure and carry out a visual inspection to check for worn or damaged tyres.”

A sparkling example German quality delivers prestige, power and value in spades.

This is a “sparkling” near-new car that has only travelled 13,000 kms.

Those smart blokes at BMW are obviously far from just dreary engineering types. When it comes to building a great engine, they manage to combine their obvious skills with a passion for efficient and exciting delivery of that engine’s power. The result in this instance is the 2.0 litre diesel that powers this week’s Blackboard Special from Coombes Johnston BMW on Hewletts Road, Mount Maunganui.

The BMW 320d M may seem a bit of a mouthful, but there is plenty to bite into with a car that comes well under retail price and can claim no owners. That’s because it has been a dealership demonstrator car since arriving on the yard and has only managed to run up 13,000km on its clock. Incidentally, you would never know it…the 320 is a sparkling example that barely qualifies as “second hand” and provides a brilliant entry for anyone seeking the prestige and style of Germany’s leading motor brand.

Attractive package

To look at, the 320 is a nicely assertive design and with its low profile 18 inch alloys and sports suspension, it sits a bit lower and is well defined by the distinctive body crease running down its sides. The “M” badge sees you getting the 18 inch alloys, full body kit, sports seats and sports suspension in a very attractive package.

Inside, the 320 is simply laid out, with some

well thought through applications of space and use. For example, the centre console has the USB and MP3 jack placed handily in the same area as a cup holder and a convenient storage holder for your sun glasses. In the rear, there is a fold-out ski holder with a plastic outer cover that lets you slide your skis from the boot right through, without having them scuff the upholstery or make a mess inside.

The dash is a simply laid out with German efficiency and the crisp sounds from the sound system are easily managed as you switch easily between CD player, MP3 and USB input without any head scratching. The M series seats provide a more “sporty” feel to driver’s support and lend a lower sense of positioning to the driver who can set him or herself up easily via the electric seat control.

The leather-clad steering wheel has a wide rim that is surprisingly easy to get to grips with and communicates the car’s dynamic steering capabilities quickly and efficiently to and from the road. It is increasingly rare to drive a rear wheel drive these days and the 320 offers a refreshing return to direct handling and steering dynamics.

To summarise the ride – it just feels right on the open road with suspension that is firm, without being unforgiving and steering that sends a taut, well-built chassis the direction intended.

Power punch

The 320d is powered by an engine that has somehow managed to combine the torque of a diesel at lower speeds with the pick-up and punch of a petrol, as needed.

In fact, it is an engine that leaves you quickly wondering if this is the three or the bigger five series diesel you have scored at such a great price.

It doesn’t lack for power and loves to be revved out up the range. Being matched to a six speed auto transmission ensures it all comes together on the road as a car that can idle through Saturday traffic very comfortably, but once things clear, it can be opened up with confidence.

As petrol prices continue to see-saw above $2.00 per litre, the 320d not only makes for a nice luxury drive, but also a smart choice. Nor will the price make your eyes water – it comes in almost a full $20,000 under the new model’s retail and with the assurance of a two-year BMW warranty and service plan. Triton powers into ute market Mitsubishi’s re-styled Triton is still a powerful ‘head-turner’ ideal for work or play

When the Mitsubishi Triton ute was launched five years ago, it turned a few heads among the mainly male ute-buying population.

Those curvy looks through the rear passenger section and the car-like front grille seemed to invite a “love it or hate it” attitude among motorists. Ladies loved it, guys...well, maybe not so much.

Having personally experienced the very first press launch of the Triton on the Wellington coast, the well planned launch here in New Zealand provided plenty of opportunity to showcase a ute which, despite its controversial looks, managed to plug it through the rough stuff and offered a wide range of configurations for New Zealand’s sophisticated utility market.

Now the latest model is out and yes those curves through the rear cabin remain, although

some detailed re-styling seems to have toned them back.

New diesel technology

Up front, it says much about how rapidly diesel technology has evolved, that the 3.0 litre diesel model tested on those Wellington hills and coast roads back in 2006 has been compressed down into a 2.5 litre engine. Yet it still manages to increase its power by 13kw to 133kw and its stump-pulling torque by a chunky 54Nm to 407Nm at 2000rpm. Much of the “tractor clatter” of the older engine has been smothered or eliminated, making this a smoother-sounding, easy-shifting power plant, which is as comfortable around town as it is cruising at speed.

The delivery of the turbo is nice and gradual, easing up through the rev range without abruptness and making the manual gear shifting on the GLS model tested a relaxed affair. This is of course helped by a dollop of new turbo technology which was missing from the previous model’s engine.

Under the hood is a new generation turbo charger, with variable vanes that adjust according to the air flow coming through the engine, to achieve an ideal pitch which optimises the airflow coming into the combustion chamber. The result is a turbo which can deliver much earlier at the bottom of the rev range and with a far smoother progressive power increase. The extra grunt of the new engine also pushes the GLS’s towing capacity up with its competitors to 3.0 tonne – a vital feature in this competitive market.

The rear lid offers greater flexibility by lifting up from the front.

In the limited off-roading drive we were able to take the test Triton on, its departure angle of 20.6 degrees was generous enough, with no scrapes or grindings on the undersides to have to confess to. The smart low profile 17inch tyres were more suited to on road rather than off-road use, but with the ultra-low 4WD option engaged, it easily managed some slippery semi-swampy country out of town. The Triton’s off-road ability is also wrapped around MATT (Mitsubishi All Terrain Technology). This is an integrated package of software systems which monitor changes in wheel speeds and the varying G forces brought to bear on the ute. This includes Electronic Brake Force Distribution and Active Stability Control. In the GLS model, this includes the Super Select 4WD system which enables you to switch from 2WD to full time 4WD on the fly.

Upgrades bring improvements Mitsubishi clearly appreciates the strong affinity Kiwis have with their utes and it’s obvious has listened closely to the feedback from its customers with this latest Triton model. For example, it has made the rear tray deeper and slightly longer, eliminating the issue you can sometimes get with a four door ute, where offering room for the family inside means there’s only just enough space for the dog and some gear in the rear. Instead, on this new model there is 14 per cent more useful space than on the previous one. On the GLS model tested, the tray was also nicely covered with a lid which had the ability to lift up completely, rather than just being hinged from the front.

The interior has been upgraded to include smart driver information displays, like elevation, barometric pressure and fuel consumption.

This provides increased room for those loads which would not fit were it to simply open from one end. The hinge system comes with its own pins to ensure once you have put the lid up it can be locked in place safely and won’t fly apart mid-journey.

Interior upgrade

The interior has also been upgraded, offering well-supported rear seating for passengers, with space which is better than any other four door ute recently trialled. It is a comfortable, supportive rear position which would win plenty of favour with the family when coupled to excellent visibility. There is also a remote electric operated rear window that would be ideal for passing gear through to a rear canopy area or to yell at the dog to “shut up – you’re not on the farm now!”

Other additions of car-like features include wheel mounted remotes for the stereo and cruise control and a leather topped 4WD and gear shift. They add to a pleasant cabin which is still easily cleaned and kept clean with hard wearing surfaces on the doors.

With its long history here in New Zealand, Mitsubishi probably first won the hearts and minds of the rural folk with its L200 – plenty of which can still be found around today. With the new Triton and its stand out looks, excellent power levels and smart interior finish, Mitsubishi is well positioned to continue offering the competitive ute market a very effective means to combine work with play.

A winning partnership Ford New Zealand is celebrating 17 years of All Blacks sponsorship with the release of two “AB” models – the Fiesta AB35 and the Falcon XR6 All Blacks Limited Edition.

Need for drifting speed The rumble of a turbo engine, the hiss of the blow-off valve, sleek body kits glistening are all part of the rush associated with high-octane drifting.

While it may still carry the stigma of “boy racers doing skids”, drifting is quickly becoming a legitimate sport – and Tauranga drifter Cole Armstrong is part of this movement proving the critics wrong.

The 24-year-old has just completed the New Zealand Drift series, placing fourth in the country. As a result, he has been invited to the World Time Attack and World Drift Challenge in Sydney later this year.

That said, Cole is not denying he got into the sport after a few too many run-ins with the Tauranga police.

“I used to be in a street squad a lot – before I got caught up with the police. I think I lost my licence three times in just over a year for drifting.

I did street racing and some grass work as you call it, practicing drifting – and once I got the hang of it I went out and bought my first Skyline.”

For those unfamiliar with the motorsport, drifting is the act of over-steering, causing a loss of traction in the rear wheels through turns, while still maintaining vehicle control and a high exit speed around corners. The highly-skilled sport is slowly becoming recognised for its stunning visuals and driver control.

Cole has been drifting for two years and says while some have the natural talent; it is definitely a skill that can be learnt.

“Some people pick it up quicker and then you have people that drive and drive just to get the feel of the car. You slowly learn how to drift the more time spent in a car.

“We came to the V8 Super Cars in Hamilton

and V8 people think drifting isn’t hard, but when they saw it, they were like ‘bloody hell’. We are only three or four seconds off their track times and we are sideways half the time. I think now it is televised and a lot more sponsorship behind it, people have changed their thoughts of it.”

Cole admits he is “always learning and pushing to see what we can improve”. Improving doesn’t just mean the driver; but the car as well. Initially

purchasing his first R34 Skyline off a track racer, the previous owner reckoned the car wasn’t able to be drifted. He was proved wrong.

Cole is in the process of stripping the car – working to install more roll cars and re-doing the front for the Australian series, “little things you wouldn’t think about just to make it easier to handle”.
