Stylish 508 unveils many features within
Peugeot’s latest mid-size sedan offers a beautifully sculpted and refined exterior and an engine within that delivers improved performance and fuel economy. Seven years ago, Peugeot shrugged off its conservative image with the introduction of the eye-catching 407. With that distinctive front grille and long, extended bonnet area posing a potential parking challenge, it was a car that begged to be looked at, walked around and then argued over about how much one either loved or hated it. The 407 also did something else. It blazed a trail for Euro-sourced diesel powered cars and Kiwis took to it in droves…the Peugeot diesel burner became a highly popular option. As a company, Peugeot did much to educate the motoring media about the smart filtration technology and sheer efficiency of this new breed of diesel – and in the process, really threw down the challenge for other motoring marques. The 407 was also a very well spec’d cruiser, particularly in its spacious wagon design, which opened up the market to those who may have been aspiring for the cachet of a Euro car, but could not quite stretch to a “Beemer or Merc”. With the 407 history behind it, Peugeot has angled for a more conservative styling in its replacement, producing the stunning new 508.
Quieter and more powerful
First impressions indicate the 508 has a well-proportioned and nicely understated appeal. What is not immediately obvious is the concealed feature, performance and comfort aspects that unfold as you become more familiar with it over time. The test vehicle supplied from Tauranga Peugeot was the top of the line GT model. On top of the numerous features that the next level Allure has, it also includes full double stitched leather seats and a double wishbone front suspension to give it more poise and assertive handling on corners. There is also a larger turbo diesel engine in the GT. The 2.2 litre powerplant reinforces Peugeot’s reputation for inserting quiet, freerevving diesels into its line-up…engines that still have stump-pulling torque within them. In the case of the GT, that is a hefty 450Nm of torque, all coming out at only 2000rpm. Apparently Peugeot has also targeted noise levels and refinement as key focus areas for
The stunning new Peugeot 508 GT offers a stylish, but conservative profile, hiding a myriad of technological delights within.
option. Typically for Peugeot, the 508 offers excellent safety features and particular focus has gone on its lighting functions. It has an impressive lighting array up front that includes LED daytime running lights and Smart Beam main lights. These will switch automatically between high and low beam and back again, removing even more stress during long distance travel. The high visibility LED lights are also on the rear array, while smart cornering lights will illuminate the inside of a bend when travelling under 40kph – providing valuable candlepower when going around tight bends and intersections. The rear passengers are also well catered for. Not only do taller six footers get a decent amount of leg and head room, but their own climate air control and super sumptuous seats lend a wonderful cosseted feel to the classy environment. You’ll almost feel like a politician arriving at the Rugby World Cup. It’s still early days for the 508, but having had the privilege of driving one around the Bay for a while, it’s quite easy to understand why even the notoriously hard-to-please Germans have embraced the new 508 and voted it top in its segment in a recent magazine reader survey. By Richard Rennie
A sumptuous and well-finished interior features high quality leather and soft-touch surfaces that are more often found in cars twice the price. the 508. Not that either of these were shabby in the 407, but it has certainly paid off. The noise suppression, combined with an ultra-classy cabin, delivers a driving environment that feels like it belongs to a car in the $100k-plus bracket, rather than the GT’s $65,990 price tag. Handling is very precise, while the whole car carries itself with a great sense of balance and control. The diesel’s power hits the powertrain through a six speed auto transmission, which paces itself nicely alongside the engine’s power profile. There is a paddle option, but you actually feel entirely comfortable with the auto – which is intuitive and timely in its changes.
Superior comfort levels
Peugeot has also paid a lot of attention to
the cabin appeal and layout of the 508. The controls on the 407, particularly around the heater-stereo interface, always seemed more complicated than they needed to be, but that has been addressed in this new incarnation. The 508 is a car that comes jammed with extras, including a delightful back massager for de-stressing on those extra-long journeys and when coupled with the heated front seats, makes for great winter driving comfort. There is a heads-up display that becomes surprisingly easy to get used to. It does not impose on the view out the front and ones eye quickly becomes accustomed to picking up the speed figures in particular. Very handy for close confined urban driving. The stereo system all meshes nicely with Bluetooth phones and the ability to stream music wirelessly off an iPod or phone is a very cool

Spoilt for choice
Car buyers on a limited budget will find plenty of vehicles on offer from Bay of Plenty dealers
With plenty of information flying around about law changes to older vehicles, limited supply of cars from Japan and escalating prices, what kind of car can you get for under $10,000?
available on their yards right now. It is an indisputable fact that TradeMe has changed the way your “average person in the street” buys a car. Hop online any time and you can scroll through thousands of cars, but it really is a case of “buyer beware”. We have all heard the horror stories of the ones that went very wrong or people who ended up with a lemon.
Private buyers
Bay Driver decided to do some investigation, as well as talk to people with cars under $10,000 to find out just what you can get for your money in the region. Firstly, don’t be under the impression you need to travel to a main centre such as Auckland to find a car that meets your needs for an affordable price.
Local selection
Tauranga, the Mount and Te Puke all have established used car dealers who offer a pretty good selection across all reputable makes and models. No matter if you’re looking for a small hatchback or a van for work, there are good quality vehicles
All types of vehicles can be bought for under $10,000 locally.
Twenty-one year old Molly Keller found her first car on TradeMe – a Toyota Marino 1987, for a very low price of $1500. After passing on some dodgy looking cars on the site, she found a nice Tauranga couple who were looking to sell their car before they embarked on a trip overseas. She bought the car because she needed some way to get from ‘A’ to ‘B’ for an economical price. “It is a really good little car. A small two door, with a 1.5L engine – so it was really economical to get me from town to home continued...

Peace of mind guaranteed ...continued and back again and I have no mechanical problems with it either.” While Molly was lucky enough to find what she was looking for online, there are many people who look for more security around their car purchase. Buying from a registered motor vehicle trader ensures you are not only covered under the Consumer Guarantees Act, but you also receive a minimum six month registration on the vehicle. You will also have the opportunity to purchase an additional mechanical warranty if you wish. When buying from dealers in the region, like the ones on these pages, you will also have the confidence of excellent after sales service – should anything go wrong with your new purchase. Buyers will find that dealers are hard-working business people who open for business every day and want to maintain their reputation, so are keen to keep their customers happy.
John Buckthought and Tony Green of T & J Motors with Eileen Betts and her new Honda Logo hatch.
All types
All sorts of people, from all walks of life, are in the market for cars under $10,000. Owner of Te Puke South Autos Scott McKelvie says he regularly deals with beneficiaries and younger drivers looking for “as much car as they can get for their limited budget”. Not every teenager who comes on his yard is looking for a “boy racer” car either. He recently sold a Subaru station wagon to a 19-year-old who was looking for a more reliable vehicle for his partner and soon-to-
and
be-born child. Happily, Scott had the ideal vehicle for him at a price he could afford. Reliable work vehicles can also be found on yards like Scott’s all over the Bay. One thing a tradesman doesn’t want is a van or ute that breaks down all the time – even more reason to buy from a dealer with the protection that goes along with it. Warehouse Cars in 15th Avenue is another dealer who always stocks a wide variety of both passenger and commercial vehicles,
M3TRADING
from reliable Toyota Hatchbacks to eight seater family wagons and commercial vehicles. “We always carry a good selection of cars under $10,000. We do our very best to work out a deal for our customers that suits their budgets,” says Neil.
Car dealers
Eileen Betts was not used to buying from car dealers, having bought privately for many
years. She was recommended to Mount Maunganui dealer, T & J Motors in Hewletts Road, by a friend and although initially nervous about the process, Eileen ended up one very happy customer. T & J co-owner John Buckthought says the majority of their clients are through referrals. “We think it’s because we take care to provide solutions for our customers and choose not to deal in ‘problems’.” Eileen purchased a 1997 Honda Logo hatchback for $5,000. “John and Tony were brilliant to deal with and made me feel confident that I was making the right decision. “The car had quite low mileage and transports me safely and economically around town and on the open road. “My family and friends have actually been very impressed with what I got for my money,” says Eileen. “Buying from T & J Motors gave me the assurance that if anything should go wrong with the car, they would make sure that it was put right. “I was advised to call them first if I was unhappy about anything at all. I would recommend that if anyone is at all unsure about the whole process of buying a car, go and see John and Tony.” Remember, if you are looking on TradeMe to buy a car, it can pay to have the car checked out by a registered mechanic or visit the VTNZ for an inspection service. However, buying from a dealer can ensure peace of mind and longevity in the after care service.

Top training chance for off-road rider
Seventeen-year-old off-road motorbike trail rider Gabrielle Gundry is looking to extend her skills with one of the best female riders in the world. Ten-times world trials champion Laia Sanz from Spain is holding a three day training camp in Canberra for women riders. The camp is held a week after the Australian Women’s Cup event on July 10. Gabrielle, ‘Gabby’, was invited to compete in the Women’s Cup and is staying a week on in Canberra to take part in Laia’s training. Gabby says the training camp is an opportu-
nity that “can’t really be missed”. “She is coming all the way from Spain and she will never be closer than this.” Although still in the clubman’s grade, the Year 12 Tauranga Girls’ College student is coming up through the ranks. One of only three female competitive trail riders in the clubman’s grade, she is currently competing in the North Island Moto Trials Championships. She recently won the last round in her grade in New Plymouth and regularly finishes in the top three, beating riders with more experience. Gabby was the junior women’s representative in the Oceania Cup last year, a team that included Australasian trials champion Jake Whitaker. New Zealand won, making this
the first time a female name is going on the shield. Gabby says she takes the ‘only girl’ situation in her stride and enjoys the challenge of competing against males. “It is pretty good, because being at the top of my grade and riding against all males means that I can keep up and push myself harder. I am always pushing myself to beat my brother.” Gabby got into the sport when she was 10 years old, beginning competitively at 13. “My dad, granddad and brother all do it, so I just started doing it. I’ve always been involved in motorbikes, even if it was pit bikes. “I would go around the competitions and
thought, ‘oh I should give this a go’. I didn’t realise I would get like this.” When she first began, Gabby says it was difficult to begin with because she wasn’t getting a bike of her own until her father was sure it was something she would pursue. “I started off with a real old bike – a heavy Yamaha TY 175. Dad wasn’t sure I would stick with it, but after a while he realised. “So when I got a new bike – jumping to that from this was like, wow!” Gabby is still in the process of fundraising for her Australia trip as the opportunity to train with Laia came up out of the blue.
