Poetry in motoring

Throughout the years, Sideline Sid has learnt to take first impressions at face value, with the top of the range Holden Barina CDX Hatch from Ebbett Motors in Tauranga proving full of surprises.

Sideline Sid used to think Holden meant big six cylinder cars and wagons with plenty of grunt. In the mid-1970s, a much younger version of the grizzled old fella of today, bought a 1966 HR Holden Wagon. With a limited budget, they said the Holden had more than 100,000 miles on the clock and was sporting a bump or two from a hard life in the King Country. Sid’s first impression was a sporty looking In the four years of ownership, the Golden shopping basket. No slowing down for Shirley

Shirley Faull became involved in racing at the age of 76. Photo by Geoff Ridder.

Shirley Faull is an 85-year-old granny who drives around in a Toyota Corolla. Nothing too shocking in that statement – except for the fact the car is fully equipped with a roll cage, racing harness, and sponsor’s livery – because Shirley races the Corolla around off-road circuits all across the Waikato and Bay of Plenty. It started about nine years ago when, at the age of 76, Shirley bought a new sports car: a 1990 Toyota Celica which she describes as “a beautiful car with lovely pop-up head lights”. A short time later she made a decision that would lead to the unlikeliest of new passions. “I discovered there was a social car club for enthusiasts, so I went on a few social runs with them. One of them had his car set up for the Targa Rally. I had always been a motorsport fan but I didn’t know much about rallying. “He gave me a ride in it on a club hill climb and I thought, ‘now this is fun, I’d like to do this, I think I’d like to be a

rally driver’.” There was no stalling or second thoughts from that point on, she raced out to join the Bay of Plenty competitive car club and began studying to gain her New Zealand rally licence. No sooner had she gained her licence, than the phone rang. On the other end was a car club member who told Shirley a rally competitor in Rotorua was advertising for a new co-driver. “I knew what a co-driver had to do, but wasn’t sure if I would be able to do it at speed.” She applied for the role, got it, and set off to learn all about what it took to be a codriver in New Zealand’s largest competitive rally series. Nearly 10 years later, Shirley has just about seen it all when it comes to club auto racing and has no plans to slow down. “It’s amazing the adventures I have,” she says. “I’m not doing gravel events any more, it’s a matter of changing over the wheels… and it got very hard lifting them into the boot myself. “Every year when it comes time to renew

my rally licence I think ‘Oh well I’ll have another year’.” So well-known around the scene now is Shirley that fellow competitors barely bat an eyelid at her presence come race day. However, it isn’t always that way she says, recalling a “run-in” with a police officer during a routine warrant of fitness check in her home town of Te Puke. “A rally car is fully road legal and I always wear a full racing harness…when I stopped in front of the young officer his eyes nearly popped out…he must have seen the car coming and made up his mind what was driving it, I wasn’t what he expected.” These days racing is very much a family affair for Shirley with two grandchildren, Jason and Kris, competing in drifting and off-road events respectively. In one final thought about what inspired her to become involved in car racing Shirley recalls her career as a draftswoman, firstly for the railways and then in the Ministry of Works, where ironically she had a lot to do with road design. “All knowledge comes in useful sooner or later.” By Corey Rosser

Out of the gravel After experiencing problems with her car Shirley Faull went looking for a replacement – and walked out with a sponsorship deal. After parking her rally car in the street, Shirley was browsing the Stadium Cars lot when she was approached by owner Carin Arundel. “I asked her what car she was currently driving and she pointed to her car,” recalls Carin, who automatically assumed Shirley meant the hatchback alongside the rally car. When Carin got the full story about Shirley’s rally driving he was so impressed he offered to sponsor her car maintenance. “She’s an amazing woman, I was really impressed.” Shirley says the sponsorship is a great help to cover some of the costs and a complete service revealed some major problems which have since been fixed. “It’s given me so much more confidence knowing that the car will be kept in top condition.”

Classic cars support organ donation Tauranga’s waterfront will come alive to the sights and sounds of the ’50s this Saturday, March 16, when 150 classic hot rods from around the country converge on the city for The Big Thank You car show. Organised by Rotorua double lung transplant recipient Danny Saunders, the one-off show is being put on to get people talking about organ donation. The Otumoetai College founding pupil says he still has a soft spot for Tauranga and the great support from Tauranga City Council in having the event prompted him to hold it here. Along with the standard competitions, the Americana-themed event will feature a 1950s pin-up model beauty contest judged by designer Trelise Cooper, a bouncy castle and other attractions to give it a family flavour. Asked what was behind the model contest he says: “I’m a red-blooded male. But seriously it goes hand and hand with the hot rods, it’s that whole Americana scene.” After leaving Tauranga in his teens, Danny went on to do develop a love for hot rods when he settled in West Auckland. “I’ve been into it all my adult life, I’ve been driving old Ford Coupes sine I was 18,” says Danny, who will be exhibiting his 1947 Ford Coupe next weekend. Danny’s health took a hit by 2008 after developing chronic emphysema caused by a rare genetic deficiency, and relied on an oxygen bottle. “I was on oxygen 24 hours a day and could not walk more than 30 feet without stopping, and I was completely reliant on my family.” A double lung transplant in 2010 has seen him regain his previous active live, going on regular hunting and fishing expeditions and walking 40km every week. He knows he is one of the lucky ones to received donor organs, after losing many friends on the waiting list. He has organised the event to encourage people to discuss organ donation. “Our main priority is to cover the costs involved in running it and to encourage people to discuss organ donation with their family. We are not saying you must be a donor or not, but it’s important to be discuss with your family because at the end of the day your family has the final say.” “You’ve probably ticked organ donor on your driver’s licence and think that’s all you need to do, but it means nothing because it still needs to be signed off by your family. That’s why it’s so important to talk about you wishes with your family.” Danny says by discussing the issue with your family takes the responsibility right off them. By Hamish Carter

Thank you, thank you ... Pin-up girls, hot rods, classic cars – the best of classic Americana is coming to Tauranga’s Strand this weekend and all for a good cause. The Big Thank You Car Show is a major extravaganza, with 150 cars including hot rods, custom cars, top Holdens, Fords and boy-racer cars vying for awards in the one-off show.

Organiser Danny Saunders says the event is a ‘big thank you’ for everyone involved in helping organ donors and recipients, including the families, hospital system and staff and friends and families. Any money left after expenses will go to Organ Donation New Zealand. The show is on The Strand, March 16, 9am-3pm.

Indian invasion ahead

Future designs on driving

The design of future motoring? Kia Cross GT.

Forget about the Jetson’s vision of the family car taking off and flying – recent concept car designs released by two companies suggest it’s a hybrid future on four wheels.

After countless attempts to revive the classic US motorcycle brand Indian – America’s oldest bike name will soon be back. The bike brand has a new generation of fans in New Zealand following the 2005 film release of ‘The World’s Fastest Indian’ about Burt Munro’s 1967 landspeed record on a 1920 Indian Scout. Hopes that the brand, which went bust in 1953, will soon hit the street with fresh models were boosted when specialist motoring manufacturer Polaris Indus-

Subaru has unveiled its new concept crossover vehicle VIZIZ at the Geneva International Motor Show which features an innovative new allwheel drive system offering “high efficiency and performance on all road surfaces”. The VIZIZ combines a future generation diesel hybrid engine and independent rear motor-driven AWD. The rear wheels are independently driven by separate electric motors, providing finely tuned control of all four wheels to match the driving environment and road surface. The powertrain selects the best time to use each motor, according to driving conditions, achieving high fuel efficiency. Meanwhile Kia also revealed its latest concept car, the Cross GT – a large premium SUV vehicle, combining luxury elements with the advantages of an off-roader. It’s a hybrid offering an electric motor ideal for city commuting and the grunt of a 3.8-litre V6 petrol engine for country cruising. Subaru’s VIZIZ. Kia is looking for feedback on the design, which is strictly a concept at this point, to sound out radical designs and ideas for new vehicles before deciding whether they will go into production or just remain a styling exercise.

tries bought the brand two years ago. Polaris, a big player in the all-terrain, mobility scooter and snowmobile markets, already own the Victory Motorcycle brand. The company has just unveiled its debut new model, appropriately titled the Chief, which will go on sale in the US later this year. Company CEO Scott Wine hopes it will give the long-dominant Harley Davidson major competition in the 600cc+ segment with its lower ticket price. A New Zealand release date has not been finalised.

New cars warranting a change next year Changes to the vehicle warrant system are confirmed to arrive in early 2014. New Zealand Transport Agency’s group manager Celia Patrick announced the changes will come into effect in the first half of 2014, allowing the agency time to prepare for the revised system which will see the frequency of warrant

checks drop for newer cars. “Over the next year, we’ll get the necessary transport rules updated to legalise the changes, update our IT systems and work with vehicle inspecting organisations to develop the new process,” she says. From early 2014, new light vehicles will have an initial WOF inspection, then no further inspections until the vehicle is three

years old. About 900,000 vehicles made after 2000 will go from a six-monthly WOF to permanent annual inspections. “The NZTA will run a public information programme to remind people about the changes and when they come into effect closer to the time they’re introduced.” The changes apply to all vehicles that are warranted.

Classic English beauty As a young apprentice painter and paper-hanger in Te Aroha, Merv Hazelton had his heart set on a Mark 1 Zephyr. But his dreams were shattered by his older brother, who disparaged his driving ability warning Merv’s father of the dangers involved. “My brother told my dad I would kill myself in it, so I wasn’t allowed to buy that. What really hacks me when you look back

was that it was a really nice car too.” Instead of a Zephyr, he traded his little 150cc Honda motorbike for an off-white 1960 Morris 1000, which he had for about two years. About 12 years later, after a series of “ordinary, everyday cars”, including a Mark 2 Zephyr, Merv’s dream of a Mark 1 came true. Almost 29 year later the ivory 1956 Mark 1 Zephyr 6 convertible still holds pride of place in his garage in Papamoa, having won a series of car show trophies throughout the years. Merv, and fellow Zephyrloving wife Pauline, added another title at Tauranga’s recent All Ford Day car show

where they won the English/European class for the sixth time in 11 years. Among the convertible’s many other wins he is particularly proud of winning: Best Mark 1 Convertible at five International Consul Zephyr and Zodiac Convention’s in a row, as well as taking runner-up car of the convention one year. At Easter he will be hoping for more success when the event is held in Auckland. Win or lose, Merv loves all competitions and car club events, saying they have made many great friends and had lots of family fun with the Zephyr. “You just go along to these competitions

and if you come out on top you come out. It doesn’t really worry us. We just enjoy doing it and it’s great to get it out and let other people have a look rather than leaving it locked in a shed.” At the shows Merv always has people telling him stories about Mark 1 Zephyrs they have known. “So many people can relate to them – it’s a bit of a Kiwi icon vehicle, so many people have owned or known people who have owned them and have their stories.”

Merv says a big part of the appeal when they bought the car in 1984 was to give him a project to play on. “All I was doing was working, so we wanted something that would be an outlet rather than working all the time.” The Zephyr was in reasonable condition when he bought it and he has continued to do make minor improvements on the car “as time goes on and as finances permit”.

Going to the Hop Roxanne Agnew with the restored Cortina and matching caravan she hopes to take to this years show, by the trike which was last year’s hit.

Kaimai V8-lover Roxanne Agnew can still clearly remember going to the first Whangamata Beach Hop in 2001. Turning up in a Ford XF panel van, she just had to look around the streets to be reminded of her true love for the roar and power of a grunty V8. “After that I saw the light and got back into what I really like,” says Roxanne, who bought the van with the intention of learning to panel and paint on the largest canvas she could find. “I was just surrounded by all these V8s and thought ‘this is what I’ve always liked so stuff it, this is what I’m going to go back and get into’. It was basically ‘bugger the kitchen and the house, I’m getting a car’.” Apart from one year, when she was between V8s, Roxanne hasn’t missed a beach hop since. “My first car was a Cortina, but after that I went to V8 Holdens and XU-1 Torana and stuff like that. I just love that

feeling when you can put your foot down and go for it.” Last year Roxanne and her motoring-loving partner Keith Riddell attracted lots of attention on the streets of Whangamata when an old souped-up mobility scooter which Keith had converted into a trike was voted one of the top five bikes at the event. “It was a huge hit. It was just this old standard mobility scooter. Which Keith had restored up a bit, and he turned it into this work of art. He made fibreglass guards and pulled the whole thing apart then put it back together so it basically looks like a giant retro pedal bike. “We were just riding it around the beach hop and for some reason everyone loved it and it got voted into the top five of the people’s choice, there were Harleys and all sorts immaculate proper bikes and this little homemade bike sitting in the middle of them.” This year they planned to head to next weekend’s Whangamata Beach Hop with a 1966 Mark 1 Cortina and retro Lilliput caravan which he had brought back from the grave,

restoring both to mint condition with matching silver and burgundy paint jobs. From starting off just as a project to make it easier to get away on holiday, she says Keith decided to give it a smart paint job. The next problem was the caravan did not match their blue 1973 Ranchero Ute, so he found the old Cortina to do up. Plans to take the matching pair are looking unlikely because of delays getting a new wiring loom for the car, so they will probably tow the caravan on the ute. But no matter what they take, they are expecting another great time – in what has become the couple’s annual holiday. “It’s the atmosphere and the people that I love, there are always lots of people to catch up with, and we love seeing what people are doing and building.” Organisers expect 1000 cars from 1923 to 1971 models. The event beginning on Tuesday, builds up to car show and main events over the weekend. For details go to www.beachhop.co.nz By Hamish Carter

Driving the community spirit Toyota are offering 25 community groups the latest Corolla for three years – but time is running out for Bay of Plenty residents to help groups in the area make the cut. The cars will go to the 25 groups which receive the most votes on Facebook, but when the Bay Driver went to print no Western Bay’s groups were in contention. The closest at the time were the Bay of Plenty Classic Aircraft Trust in 40th place (90

Pride and joy Car lovers have a chance to show off their pride and joy on Easter Saturday at Greerton Village Mainstreet’s annual car show. The show at Greerton Village School is open to all cars in an event organised to complement the Easter jazz festival and will feature live music and stalls. Mainstreet manager Victoria Thomas says the event is open to all vehicles. “We didn’t want to restrict it to vintages or hot rods, it’s for anyone. “It was a great success last year and we are hoping it will go just as well again this year.” The show will run on Saturday, March 30 from 10am-2.30pm. For more details contact Victoria on 571 6347 or go to www. greertonvillage.org.nz

votes), followed by Papamoa Surf Life Saving Club at 54 (79 votes). Other Western Bay clubs vying for a chance to win the use of the car for three years were Canoe Slalom Bay of Plenty, Bay of Plenty MS Society, Tauranga SPCA, Creative Tauranga and Citizens Advice Tauranga. The cars are being offered as part of a campaign to thank Kiwis for making Toyota the country’s top car brand for the past 25 years. Voting closes on March 26. To vote go to www.facebook.com/ToyotaNZ

St Paddy’s car show Papamoa car enthusiasts have the perfect excuse to get their pride and joy out of the shed this Sunday with the Rose and Thistle’s annual car show. The bar’s manager Tanya Percy expects to be surprised once again by the standard of cars on display at the informal show, saying “something different” always turns up. “We’ve had all sorts - we’ve had a Unimog. We get all types of cars and trucks and bikes, whatever people are into.” Tanya says they started having the annual show about six years ago, motivated by her husband Ian – a car-lover with a special attachment to Mustangs. “He’s a bit of a car-nut and we know there are a lot of car-lovers out here in Papamoa so we thought it would be good to do something here.” Anyone can enter their vehicle for no charge, and all go cars are on the running to be voted favourites in the people’s choice awards. Tanya says it’s a lucky coincidence the show was on St Patrick’s Day, and is hoping for a good turnout. The show is held in the area outside the Rose and Thistle at Palm beach Plaza, with cars expected from 10.30am and a live band from 4pm. Phone 5747349 for more information.
