Is it worth the Qash?

Nissan’s 2018 facelift Qashqai has an appeal all of its own. It’s a very modern and desirable looking vehicle, and the price tag makes you do a double take.

From the outside, the Qashqai’s visual appeal has improved, with a dashing front end that incorporates newly-designed headlights with attractive boomerang daytime running lights and a revised clamshell bonnet that beefs up its road presence significantly. Nissan’s ‘V-Motion’ grille has been Is the 2018 Nissan Qashqai worth the re-interpreted for this facelift and both cash? You might be thinking ‘this sounds the front and rear bumpers have been expensive’. But it’s not. It’s really not. reworked. The tail light design is also new In fact, I can’t believe just how cheap this and now features a 3D effect, and the look much vehicle is. is rounded off with new 17, 18 or 19-inch So it’s no surprise that since the original wheel designs. Qashqai launched back around 2007 that Design doesn’t stop at the bonnet either. Nissan has sold well over three million Inside, Nissan has made a car into a of them around the world. The styling is very funky, soft to the touch and unlike anything else. They certainly make a statement. The new D-shaped steering wheel feels pleasingly tactile, and it now comes equipped with four-way remote toggles that make it easy to adjust the audio system, cruise control and e lv a v 6 1 Bluetooth settings. The touchscreen infotainment system found in the top-spec models now has a new and improved layout, along with integrated navigation, and is accompanied by a potent seven-speaker BOSE sound system to keep you entertained. It’s not all about the looks in this update. This facelift also sees the introduction of a host of useful safety features with Nissan Intelligent Mobility. They include Adaptive Cruise Control, Blind Spot Warning, Emergency Braking, Forward Collision Warning, Around View Monitor, Cross Traffic Alert and Moving Object Detection. These features not only improve safety, but they also make city driving more manageable. However, some of these features are only offered in the higher end models. In terms of practicality, the Qashqai has a sizeable loading capacity of 480 litres that expands to 680 litres with the 60:40 split rear seat folded down. Space for rear passengers is good, with a reasonable amount of leg, head and shoulder room. There is also ample storage space dotted around the cabin, including two cup holders for the driver and front passenger. Out on the road, the Qashqai feels very car-like to drive. Even though you’re looking down on the mere mortals in their cars, the agile feel of the Qashqai means you can zip around the city without hesitation. There’s only one engine choice across

the range of Qashqais – the 2.0L petrol MR20DD engine. All models in the range come with an automatic CVT transmission. Most other differences between the models are looks and comfort, with a smattering of additional safety features, however the topof-the-line Ti model also features automatic adaptive headlights and intelligent park assist, for those tighter spots. For the difference in cost between editions, it’s not too much of a stretch to spoil yourself. With the entry level ST starting at $36,270, you’re getting a lot of car for your money. However, the rangetopping Ti model is $44,990, and you do get quite a lot more for not much more. Something else to keep in mind – Nissan’s claimed 6.9L/100km is exceptional for a bigger vehicle with a 2.0L engine. You’ll be saving so much in fuel costs that the extra $7000 you spent to get the topof-the-line model will be repaid in about a week at today’s fuel prices. There’s a colour option for most moods, with three shades of grey, an Ivory Pearl, the deadly Night Shade, Magnetic red, and the striking Vivid blue. The Napa leather seats are definitely the option to go for, but are not available in the ST model. All in all, the Nissan Qashqai is such a good car for the money that you’ll feel like you robbed the dealer. Take a trip along Hewletts Road to Farmer Auto Village Nissan and take one for a spin yourself. Jay Burston

Electric and self-driving vehicles have long road ahead - survey

Most New Zealanders are yet to join the electric vehicle revolution with only 11 per cent lining up an EV for their next vehicle purchase, according to a recent Trade Me Motors survey. Head of Trade Me Motors Alan Clark says while EVs have been on the New Zealand motoring scene for four or fi e years, many New Zealanders are yet to embrace them. “While we’ve seen recent findings suggesting that Kiwis will consider an EV, when it comes down to it only 11 per cent of people surveyed said they would pull the trigger and buy an EV as their next vehicle.” Battery life, cost and reliability were the main reasons given by people for not purchasing an EV.

“Despite the ongoing savings, the initial outlay for an EV is a clear deterrent,” says Alan. “The average cost for an EV in July was $24,000, while the average price for a car on Trade Me was just $16,000 in July. “We also know that with so few charging stations around the country, especially outside the main centres, it’s a challenge to plan out a journey and this puts a lot of people off. Then there’s the additional cost to have a charging station installed in your garage to factor in too.” The survey also identified ew Zealanders’ nervousness about self-driving vehicles hitting our roads. “People are most worried about the vehicles being hacked, along with the legalities around liability if the car crashed,” says Alan.
