Bay Driver
Good things come in small packages It seems to be the latest trend these days to own a Swift. Once you spot them on the roads, you will see them everywhere. But since taking one for a spin I can see why. I have always wanted a Swift. Maybe it was just the teenage girl in me but once I got behind the wheel, I don’t know why everyone doesn’t have a Swift. Driving along the open expressway between the Bayfair roundabout and Papamoa, the GL Swift was just cruising along effortlessly at 100km/h. I had a smile on my face from ear to ear and watched the scenery go by. Zipping through the suburbs and new developments in Papamoa and Mount Maunganui this car was perfect. I didn’t feel like I was taking up more than my lane in the little side streets and there was plenty of room for other vehicles to pass.
Small is popular
More and more people are buying smaller cars these days. With fuel prices rising and city

parking getting harder, it’s little wonder. The Suzuki Swift GL is one of those small cars. In fact, it is the biggest-selling small car in New Zealand. Reaching 1495mm in height and 3840mm in length, it’s a cinch to park and the fuel economy (4.6L/100km) will have you wondering why you didn’t make the move sooner. In fact, when compared with my habit of consuming eight glasses of water a day, I began to feel like the big drinker in this relationship! Even though the Swift may look small it still has plenty of interior space and Suzuki has packed plenty of kit into it. With 242L of luggage capacity – plenty of room for groceries and luggage – this five-seater vehicle has all the latest safety and equipment specs. All of the controls are easy to use, with manual air conditioning in the GL and GLX models, and climate air conditioning controls in the RS model.
Best value
The GL is the most affordable model in the new Suzuki Swift range with the 1.2GL manual priced at $19,990. It’s a cheap new car compared to buying one secondhand, which is around $15,000 for a similar vehicle on Trade Me. It’s not much of a step up for the GL and when you consider the new car warranty, lower maintenance and the fact new car finance rates are often less than half those of used cars, it’s hard to deny the value. The GL is great around town and easy to park. It’s easy to get out of those tight parking spaces, is smooth to drive, handles well around corners and basic road manoeuvres are really simple. When you’re driving through the suburbs it feels like you are cruising. The Swift is a quick little car, with no issues getting up to speed when needing to merge onto the expressways. It’s great on the open road, making you want to keep driving for hours. The performance in the 1.2L engine is surprising as it sits quite happily at 100km/h on the expressway, but still has the grunt to be able to pull out and pass other vehicles if you need to. It doesn’t feel slow and when you reach your destination you want to go around the block one more time simply
because you don’t want to get out. The GL Swift is a great model for personalising and making the car your own. The car looks great, with options for alloy wheels and stripes, and plenty of room on the side panels to add signwriting to promote your business.
The accessories
The GL also comes with handy accessories such as Bluetooth hands-free calling, and the GL auto comes with Apple Car Play, Android auto and GPS navigation. It is stacked with a host of safety features such as six air bags, Electronic Stability Programme, ISOFIX child seat anchors, ABS, EBD and brake assist. With five different colours to choose from, including burning red pearl, speedy blue, pure white, premium silver and super black, you are spoiled for choice. The Suzuki Swift GL is the base model for this new Swift range, starting at $19,990 for the manual model and $21,990 for the auto. The next step up is a 1.2 GLX auto at $24,500 and then the 1.0 Turbo RS auto at $25,990. The range-topping Suzuki Swift Sport starts at $28,500. The all-new Suzuki Swift GL has a five-year warranty package and five-year Suzuki Assist. This is one of New Zealand’s most comprehensive roadside assistance programmes. It has you covered all day, every day for five years from when you first buy your Suzuki – no matter how many kilometres you travel.
Recommended
I would definitely recommend this car to someone who is learning to drive or is still new to the roads, and equally to someone wanting to upgrade their existing car. No matter what your lifestyle is, this car will tick the boxes. It doesn’t matter if you do your motoring locally or travel out of town a lot for work, this car will do it all and do it well. But you don’t have to take my word for it – in 2017 Suzuki Swift won the highly regarded Canstar ‘Most Satisfied Customer’ award. Caitlin Houghton

The highway, which runs from Katikati to Tauranga, is the subject of a number of debates between the local lobby group, politicians and other Western Bay of Plenty residents. More than 500 people marched across Wairoa Bridge last Sunday to highlight their concerns. FTBR spokesman Matthew Farrell says the group is pushing for a fast-track decision on major State Highway 2 corridor capacity projects, including the Tauranga Northern Link to Francis Road, the Katikati urban bypass and improvements to blackspot intersections

from Te Puna to Omokoroa. “Safety works from Waihi to Pahoia were confirmed in August after six months of campaigning. “The group will also be calling for a moratorium on further housing development planned by the SmartGrowth partners Tauranga City Council and Western Bay of Plenty District Council.” Matthew says an open letter will be circulated among groups, organisations and corporate entities to sign, with several already stating a verbal intention to support the push for a central government infrastructure catch-up. It’s hoped that the housing moratorium, once signed and has council approval, will stop new buildings in Tauranga. “No new people and then at least we will stop the problem on the road getting worse,” says fellow FTBR spokesperson Andrew Hollis.
