The SUV that kicks RS Just when you think a car is as good as it gets, Honda upgrades its stunning HR-V line-up, with fettled styling and improved handling across the range. A new badge has also been added to the HR-V family the RS - taking on a whole lot more attitude. For the first time since launching the HR-V, and taking pride of place with the 2018 model upgrades, Honda has added the RS to its HR-V line up, and it turns out that it’s a lot more than just a badge. As well as the RS-exclusive Phoenix Orange Pearl paint job and detailing, 18-inch RS alloys, daytime running lamps, LED head, tail and fog lamps; underpinning the HR-V RS is a little sprinkling of Honda magic. The RS has sports-tuned steering and suspension, giving the driver a more responsive, direct feel. Thanks to its devilishly good looks and RS body fettling, this model is slightly longer and wider than its siblings, but even though this is not noticeable from a driver’s perspective, it does add a little something to the eye. Like it’s siblings in the HR-V range, the RS model is powered by a 1.8L i-VTEC engine, coupled with an automatic gearbox with paddle shifters on the steering wheel for when added fun is required. That added special sauce on the RS model brings the starting price in at $37,500. This is slightly less than

the class-leading HR-V Sport NT, and not much more than the rest of the line-up. Strangely, for a sports-tuned vehicle, the RS edition uses less fuel than most of the range, at just 6.7L/100km. The RS shares an interior with the rest of the range, and a fine one it has too. Yet again, Honda’s build quality oozes through the cabin. Everything has that distinctly Honda look, and nothing is so much as a millimetre out of place. Everything from the 3D-look speedometer to the infotainment system is stand-out. Ease of use, everything in reach and simple to operate. I especially like the navigation system, which is exceptionally easy to read at a glance – important when driving! Out on the road, the HR-V RS is an incredibly smooth ride for this class. Often, these smaller SUVs can be a bit jiggly over the bumps, but the HR-V irons out the road beautifully. Coupled with the RS-tuned steering and suspension, it also handles like a champion. The size of the engine is well-matched to this vehicle, with no issues attaining highway speeds, and no hunting through gears on more hilly terrain. The HR-V RS is just as capable on the city streets as out cruising on the highway. As I’ve said before, so many vehicles in this crossover SUV class come down to how they look, because there’s little else separating them, especially in the very reasonable price range of the HR-V. The HR-V RS is certainly a stand-out in the looks department. There nothing to dislike about how it looks; it’s a very attractive vehicle. It’s comfortable, capable and comes with all the toys. The biggest things separating the HR-V from its competitors are the overall outstanding reliability of Hondas, but most of all its incredible ride quality. Not even some prestige cars are as smooth and enjoyable as the HR-V, and when you add in the RS tuning, you step way out from the crowd. There’s no compromise in space either. In the back is Honda’s ‘Magic Seat System’, which includes three different modes of configuration. In tall mode, the back seats flip to give you the full advantage of the height of the car from the floor to the ceiling. Utility mode is where the back seats fold down like a regular hatch. But Honda’s engineers solved a little
problem here as well – the seats fold completely flat, so you can slide in a chest of drawers without it snagging on the seats. Long mode is a surfer’s dream. The passenger seat folds down to fit in objects up to 2.4m in length. There are other combinations too, which make this SUV very versatile for pretty much anything you can think of. For me, the RS is the stand-out model in the range. Even though there’s a model above, the look of the RS appeals to the inner boy in me, who never wants to grow up. Why not revert to your youth, and try one now at Bay of Plenty Honda on Elizabeth Street. Jay Burston

Newly married Tauranga drift couple Drew and Jodie Donovan have big plans for their ‘honeymoon year’. Major upgrades to their matching Cryptopia-sponsored Toyota Supras are now under way and the pair are hard at work on an ambitious schedule which will see them compete here over the 2018/19 D1NZ summer drift season and overseas later next year. While the number of women competing in motorsport events around the world is growing, there are few husband and wife pairings who compete in the same class or category, let alone at a professional level like the Donovans – a fact not lost on the pair as they seek to spread their wings. “It certainly gets people talking, particular now that Drew and I are married and share the same surname, says Jodie (nee Verhulst).
“Drew and I have been together – and drifting – for so long now it seems like the most natural thing in the world. But obviously, people looking in from the outside, particularly if they are new to drifting, see it differently.” Up until the 2016/17 season the pair have driven very different cars – Drew a Chevrolet V8-powered Nissan S15, Jodie a turbocharged six-cylinder Toyota Supra. Last season however, the pair both ran Toyota Supras as part of a revised promotional platform for new sponsor Cryptopia. The two Supras – Jodie’s is Bonnie and Drew’s is Clyde – are currently getting major upgrades and when finished both cars wil potentially be able to produce more than 700kW. The 2018/2019 D1NZ National Drifting Championship gets under way at ASB Baypark Stadium on January 11-12.
