Off the grid Hybrid
Car manufacturers of the world - if you want to successfully build a hybrid vehicle, this is how you do it.
The best part about the powertrain of the Corolla is the fact that you wouldn’t know if you were on petrol or electric, or switching between the two. So smooth is the transition, that you can only tell something The all-new Toyota Corolla Hybrid is a has happened because the rev counter springs marvel of engineering. Why? Along with its new look on the outside, the Corolla has had some special treatment on the inside as well. The new interior is smart, well laid out and not only looks like a quality installation, but feels like one too. Pride of place in the centre of the dashboard is the whopping eight-inch touchscreen, putting all the smarts at your fingertips. There’s Bluetooth hands-free technology for your phone and audio streaming. The audio system sports a 3.5mm audio jack as well as a USB port, and you also get to conduct the show with a voice recognition system. You’re guided by a clear and easy to use navigation system, and a voice chirps in now and again to warn you when you’re approaching hazards, such as high crash areas and railway crossings. It’s clever stuff! Although not quite autonomous driving, I was very impressed by the lane keep assistance on this car, giving you an almostautonomous experience. I’ve driven many cars with this feature now, and the Corolla performed the best in all the different scenarios. It’s more than capable of correcting the car successfully, even when the lines on the road weren’t too flash. The all-new Corolla comes with a shining five-star ANCAP safety rating, and also boasts several other safety features such as – wait for it – a pre-crash safety system with autonomous braking and pedestrian and
cyclist protection. I don’t know about you, but I like my safety to be pre-crash. It’s much less hurty than post-crash, although with seven airbags, it must be like crashing in a pillow factory. Seriously though, the list of safety features on this vehicle is extensive, and covers everything from road sign recognition to vehicle stability control. There’s active cornering assist, ABS, brake assist, traction control and hill start assist. There’s even a secondary collision brake, which tries to bring the vehicle to a stop after a collision. If you want a nice-looking car, the Corolla is worth a look. If you want a reliable car, the Corolla is worth a look. If you want an astounding hybrid, that not only looks good, drives great and is as reliable as, well, a Corolla, then you should definitely be looking at the Corolla Hybrid. It comes in two flavours - the GX Hybrid, which starts at $32,990, or the ZR Hybrid, which comes with sportier spec, sports trim and interior tweaks, premium audio, a bigger range of colours and, because it’s a super sexy eco-friendly hybrid, it no doubt comes with a date with a supermodel. Okay, possibly not. Forget the supermodel. If you want something with much more substance, wind your way to Pacific Toyota on Cameron Road and take Toyota’s all-new super model for a spin. If you’re quick, you can even take advantage of Toyota’s 3.9 per cent Jay Burston finance offer.

Don’t let your car give you a headache Everyone wants an enjoyable summer, so the last thing you need is to be let down by your car. While modern cars are usually reliable, they won’t stay that way on their own. As with any piece of equipment or machinery, if you maintain and care for your vehicle, it will generally return the favour. Problems often arise when a vehicle is under stress. In summer, that usually revolves around heat, either as a result of high ambient temperatures, a heavily loaded vehicle or stop-start driving when stuck in a queue. During the summer months, motorists often get caught up in all three at the same time. A car engine usually operates at around 95 degrees. When that same vehicle is loaded with people and camping gear, is caught in a long line of stop-start traffic, and is crawling its way up a steep hill in 30 degree-plus heat, problems can occur. If you are heading away for a few days this summer, make sure that your vehicle is fully prepared for warmer temperatures. Carrying out some simple procedures before you hit the road can save you time, money and a serious headache.

Make sure you give your vehicle a once over. Check the condition and air pressure of your tyres, including the spare, to make sure they are road worthy. Be aware that you might need access to your spare at the most inconvenient time, so if you need to get to it, plan the stowage of luggage to minimise any problems. Remember, it might not always be dry when you are trying to change your tyre. If you are towing, ensure your tow bar and braking capability is up to the load you are hauling. Because of the strain towing can place on your car, it is vital that you check to make sure cooling and lubrication systems are in top condition. It is also a good idea to have an emergency kit in your car, just in case you need it. In your kit you should have jumper cables, a jack and wheel-brace, a torch, water for both the radiator and yourself, a blanket and towel and emergency reflectors. During the summer break, everyone wants to take advantage of the great weather. This means the roads are busier than ever so drivers need to be even more aware of the risks. By driving to the conditions, planning your journey and having patience with other road users, everyone can stay safe on the roads this summer.
