The club has about 15 members but anyone can bring their pride and joy along. They usually get about 50-70 car owners adding their rumble to the event. Pretty much anything goes, from hot rods to muscle cars, classics, vintage and whatever else gets your motor running. Come on down and bring your cars, have breakfast at the Majestic Tea Bar and mix ‘n mingle with like-minded people.

February 4: New Zealand Military Vehicle Club, Tauranga The Bay of Plenty branch of NZMVC meets monthly on the first Tu sday of the month at 7.30pm, upstairs at the Tauranga Citizens Club, 170 13th Ave, Tauranga and welcomes new members and visitors. You do not have to own a military vehicle to be a member as often there can be more vehicles than drivers, or you can simply come along for the ride. Those wishing to obtain a military vehicle, either in roadworthy or unrestored condition will get plenty of assistance from existing members who have a wealth of experience and expertise. We particularly welcome the younger generation as they are the future of the club and within our ranks we have a very active “Young Guns” section who get together for annual expeditions, usually over the Christmas break, but also throughout the year.

V is for Vitara
Suzuki has always marched to the beat of its own drum when it comes to vehicle design. It redefined the hot hatch era with its hugely popula Suzuki Swift and the latest iteration of its tiny, but very serious 4WD the Jimny, is a welcome addition to a market saturated with big bulky utility vehicles. It does small things very well but I was interested to see how its compact SUV range stacked up. There are quite a few options from Suzuki in this class - with a lot of similarities in size and performance between the various Vitara and S-Cross options. The Vitara is the sportier of the two, in its styling and the fact it is a little bit lighter. The S-Cross is the more mature and refined and a bit roomier For this review I took the Vitara 2WD with the 1.4 litre boosterjet turbo engine. The extra power from the turbo engine and the low weight makes it a pleasure to drive. I took it up and over the Kaimai Range to really test its credentials and it handled this with ease. The turbo provides a whopping 40 per cent more torque than the 1.6 litre non-turbo model. This is pretty handy around Tauranga’s hilly suburbs. It does this without sacrificing fuel efficiency whi the manufacturer says is about 6 litres per 100km of mixed open road and around town driving. This is quite a bit better than the average for this class of vehicle. Also, it’s worth noting that that although this is a compact SUV, it is not actually a small vehicle. It is the ideal touring SUV for a couple, but there is enough room for a young family and the back seats accommodate anyone under two metres tall, easily enough. Like everything else in the Suzuki stable it is just very well thought out and provides everything you need in a fun package. From the outside, you get the distinctive, bold Suzuki styling. Our test car is a little more adventurous in its ‘solar yellow metallic with cosmic black pearl’ colour scheme. The chrome trim through the lower grille adds a nice touch. Inside, the microfiber suede seats feel luxurious an the dash also has a softer, more luxurious feel to it than the usual practical plastic that is used in most economically priced SUV’s. Chrome detailing running
along the centre of the dash also adds an upmarket, sporty look to the cockpit. Add in the striking rev counter and speed gauges and those circular Suzuki vents and fins on the air-con outlets and the packag is complete. It comes with keyless entry and push button ignition. There is a familiar feel to the layout of the Vitara cabin, albeit with a very modern twist, silky styling and a long list of features that you don’t often get at this price point. There is a nice big 7” screen for all your app’s, information and entertainment functions and, of course, the reversing camera. The turbo model has another little screen between the rev counter and speedo that provides a range of other key information including fuel consumption and trip distances. You can connect your smartphone via Apple Car Play or Android Auto with the option of wireless Bluetooth or direct USB connection. You don’t have to rely on your phone for maps and directions though as the Vitara has its own built-in satellite navigation system. Out on the open road and some of the safety features come into play, including the lane departure warning system. This is not an active system, but on some of the deceptive twists and turns around the Bay of Plenty, a warning can be timely. The turbo models have a few other features like adaptive cruise control, to maintain following distances and speeds, parking sensors to avoid those costly dings, blind spot monitor and rear crossing traffic alert It even has a system that will detect if the driver is showing signs of fatigue and issues an alert. This may sound a bit unnecessary but driver fatigue is a big factor in the road toll on Kiwi roads so a safety feature like this makes as much sense as airbags. You may never need it but you will be glad of it if you do. Suzuki fans won’t be disappointed with the Vitara and it has all those things you love in the rest of the range. For those just looking for a good little SUV, they must put this on the list of vehicles to try. Tauranga Motor Company on the corner of Cameron Rd and 3rd Ave has a test model available for anyone who wants to see what the Suzuki experience is all about.

Cody has a target on his back It’s tough when you have a big number ‘1’ plastered over the front and sides of your motorcycle – everyone has you in their gun sights, wants to shoot you down and take that title away. Bay of Plenty’s national MX1 motocross champion Cody Cooper can feel the pressure, although it’s something he has become accustomed to over the past few years, and he is determined that it will be he who is “firing th bullets” at this year’s 59th annual Honda New Zealand Motocross Grand Prix at Woodville, coming up next weekend, January 25-26. But Cody won’t be the only rider at Woodville feeling added pressure with the bold No.1 on their bike – Rongotea’s Seth Henson, Invercargill’s Seth Morrow, Hamilton’s Amie Roberts and Tauranga’s Levi Townley are also distinguished national champions in their respective categories and they too will be hoping to add a Woodville trophy to their repertoires. Seth won the national 12-14 years’ 125cc title last April, but he has since then stepped up to the 15-16 years’ grade, where he realises it will be much harder for him to dominate. “I have never won at Woodville in the past, but it’s definitely something I want to do,” says Seth who is soon to begin his year 11 schooling at Feilding High School. “I love racing at Woodville. The track there is so much fun. It usually has lots of ruts and I like to think that riding ruts is one of my strengths. “I reckon my main rivals at Woodville will be Tauranga’s Brodie Connolly, Tauranga’s Madoc Dixon and Manukau’s Cobie Bourke. I have
beaten both Madoc and Cobie in the past, but I think Brodie will be much tougher to beat.” Seth’s junior grade races are set for Saturday at Woodville, with senior racing scheduled for the following day. Mount Maunganui’s Cody Cooper was the main senior winner at Woodville last year, dominating the premier MX1 races on the Sunday, earning the Honda star his third Woodville crown. He had previously won the coveted trophy in 2007 and then a second time in 2014. Runner-up to Cody last year was visiting Australian professional Kirk Gibbs and he returns this year, seeking redemption and perhaps a repeat of his 2015 visit, when he was crowned the Woodville champion. All ages and levels of ability are catered for at the Woodville GP event, with races for mini bike riders, juniors, women, seniors and veterans, with riders of vintage bikes competing on the track in separate races over the weekend too and the novelty river race on Sunday also a major crowd-pleaser. Racing over the two days attracts thousands of spectators to the Tararua region, fillin motel rooms and camping grounds to the point of overflowing, the Ne Zealand Motocross Grand Prix at Woodville a must-see spectacle for any motorsports enthusiast.
