Weekend Wheels February 14-16: The VW Run to the Sun, Mount Maunganui. The VW ‘Run to the Sun’ is back in Tauranga for 2020. Sixty to 80 Volkswagens will be involved and is sure to draw in enthusiasts from all around New Zealand. The event includes the ‘Show n Shine’ show at Coronation Park, on Saturday, from 10am-2pm. All the vehicles will be parked up and on display so it is a great place for the general public to take a look. They run this alongside the ‘Little Big Market’. This year, the event is supporting Diabetes New Zealand so there will be people wandering around asking for donations. The VW Run to the Sun also includes a Sunday cruise from The Mount to McLaren Falls Park, via a very circuitous route that takes in Papamoa Beach and The Strand.

March 1: Oilers Hot Rod Club, 9am-11am On the first Sunday of every month, The Oilers Hot Rod Club invites everyone down to The Lakes Tauranga for breakfast and to display their cars. The club has about 15 members but anyone can bring their pride and joy along. They usually get about 50-70 car owners adding their rumble to the event. Pretty much anything goes, from hot rods to muscle cars, classics, vintage and whatever else gets your motor running. Come on down and bring your cars, have breakfast at the Majestic Tea Bar and mix ‘n mingle with like-minded people. March 3: New Zealand Military Vehicle Club, Tauranga The Bay of Plenty branch of NZMVC meets monthly on the first Tuesday of the month at 7.30pm, upstairs at the Tauranga Citizens Club, 170 13th Ave, Tauranga and welcomes new members and visitors. You do not have to own a military vehicle to be a member as often there can be more vehicles than drivers, or you can simply come along for the ride. Those wishing to obtain a military vehicle, either in roadworthy or unrestored condition will get plenty of assistance from existing members who have a wealth of experience and expertise. We particularly welcome the younger generation as they are the future of the club and within our ranks we have a very active “Young Guns” section who get together for annual expeditions, usually over the Christmas break, but also throughout the year. ever win this award. “Peugeot’s bright answer to the fast-growing demand of compact SUVs and crossovers in European market has been completely redefined to overtake its peers in functionalit and appeal,” says the 2017 European Car of the Year announcement. The judges liked the bold body styling, the ergonomics and the luggage space which is described as “adequate for the size” whatever that means. Looking around the cabin, there is plenty of legroom in the front, plenty in the back and the luggage compartment in the back will take luggage for four for the weekend. There is always the larger 5008 for those who need more space. “The now usual i-Cockpit ensemble, with small, flattened steering wheel positione under the instruments sight line, is progressively being seen as a plus, and not a weird arrangement,” the judges say. This is actually high praise in Europe. Now if you want to cut through the blarney, then ask the Irish. To be sure – Ireland has only delved into the motoring industry twice; once for the DeLorean which was highly unreliable and expensive and also the Shamrock, which was another huge commercial failure. However the Irish Car of the Year Awards is dedicated to “help in informing Irish consumers as to the bewildering array of high tech vehicles that are launched in Ireland each year”. And their pick for 2018 was the 3008. We all know how much the English like the French so it is somewhat of a surprise that the

3008 has won more than 20 independent car awards in the UK. In New Zealand, Stuff rated the 3008 as the top medium sized SUV in 2017. The breadth of categories and specialised awards it has won is quite impressive. In fact, if there was an award for most diverse range of awards won by a single car then this would win that too. The 3008 has won awards for best flee car in Portugal, Czech Republic and The Netherlands. It was the Best Green Car in France for its great fuel economy and low emissions and Best Family Car in the UK. And the ladies love it too as evidenced by the Women’s World Car of the Year Award in 2017, an award judged by 25 women from 20 different countries. It has even won a beauty contest – the Grand Prize of the Most Beautiful Interior’ in France’s Festival Automobile International and a similar award in Romania. There really is not just one thing you can point to for the success of this car but everything together. We have previously covered the extensive list of technological features available on the 3008 and other Peugeots – things like autonomous braking and active lane assist, night vision and automatic parking features. The power plants on these vehicles ranges from good, to exceptional and the environmental credentials could bring Mars back to life. All, in all, the 3008 is leading the pack when it comes to the medium sized SUV market and you can expect more of the same in the rest of the fleet
