Hosted by the Ford Muscle Car Club, the event draws Ford enthusiasts from around the country to enter their cars in what is always a closely contested show. People may enter on the day for a fee of $5 per car. Gates open at 8am and all cars must be ready for judging by 11am. As well as being in the

running for major prizes, all vehicles entered are eligible for spot prizes which are sponsored by a variety of Tauranga businesses. A People’s Choice Award is also eagerly competed for by the car owners. Tauranga’s Ford dealership, Ultimate Motor Group, is the major sponsor and patron of the FMCC. Dealer principal, John Cross, says that the All Ford Day is an event the company is always proud to be associated with, particularly as the organisers fundraise for charity as well on the day. This year, the charity chosen is Child Cancer Foundation. There will be collection buckets passed around on the day for donations. There will also be plenty of fun kids’ activities, live entertainment and hot and cold food plus a coffee cart. The gates open to the public at 10am, with prize giving set to start at 3pm. Entry is $5 for adults and children under-15 are free. Enquiries about entering the show may be made by calling Barry Gordon on 027 201 0428.

All-new from the ground up The new Ford Focus recently earned the award of 2011 New Zealand Car of the Year from the prestigious Motoring Writers Guild. Having had the opportunity to take the Focus Trend for a test run this week, it’s easy to understand why. While the big credit crunch back in 2008 knocked the wheels off most car manufacturers, leaving them retreating to consider their futures and in some cases ceasing to be, Ford appears to have thrived in the semi-recessionary environment that has followed. There is a sharp level of design commonality across the whole Ford range these days, bound by the company’s Kinetic Design signature that was kicked off in the nimble Fiesta. The Fiesta’s bigger brother and long-time favourite, the Focus, is now in its third guise after 14 years of worldwide popularity. And this time, it is completely new from the ground up.

Smarter by far

Anyone who has ever regarded the Focus simply as an ‘around town’ car that happens to handle really well should get behind the wheel of one of the new models at Ultimate Motor Group in Mount Maunganui. They will soon discover that the Focus is the ideal example of where modern motoring is heading – highly spec’d cars offering optimal safety features and powered by an assorted range of smart, fuel-efficient engines. Our test car was the Focus 2.0 litre diesel Trend hatch – a model that is bound to find plenty of fans for its excellent economy (5.5 litres/100km) and impressive interior space. That diesel engine is superbly matched to the double clutch automatic transmission which

The new Focus Trend has a bolder, more confident look than its predecessor and has plenty of design and technology features to attract the most discerning buyers.

slips through the range in a silky fashion. It has plenty of torque throughout without compromise at higher revs and it never seems to be left gasping for breath on the open road. Appearances in the new Focus also impress. There’s a more muscular, assertive look to this model than its predecessor and it has a strong grille design and strapping lines flowing through to the rear.

with superior Inside, the Focus is stacked amazing the ing lud technolog y, inc Park Assist feature.

Plenty of substance

Inside the driver feels like he or she has been given the utmost attention when it comes to seat positioning, steering wheel remotes and user-friendly features like voice command and Bluetooth operation. The interior space is excellent, giving the bigger brother Ford Mondeo a run for its money, and rear seat passengers are well catered for. Boot space is ample for a family of four heading away for the weekend, or a big load of groceries. On the road, there is a real sense you are in control of a car of substance. This is partly due to the incorporation of wellthought-out controls that deliver all you

would expect of them, but more importantly, controls that are intuitively easy to operate and understand. This includes the Park Assist sensing system which has been one of Ford’s big “hooks” in their marketing campaign. This wizard piece of technology leaves no blind spots to chance when completing parallel parking manoeuvres. Another stand-out feature is the excellent

Enhanced safety

Safety ‘plus’ is an integral part of this new model’s design. With its Intelligent Protection System (IPS), there is a stack of technology embedded in the Focus that will keep you together when everything else comes undone! This includes a super-rigid safety cell enclosing driver and passengers, side airbags in the front and rear and the full alphabet of electronic controls including Dynamic Stability Control (DSC), Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD) and Emergency Brake Assist (EBA). Ford really went back to the drawing board with this new model, testing it to extremes in sub 40 degrees cold and 80 degrees heat. They also opened and shut the doors 300,000 times and the test model was driven the equivalent of 88 times around the world! You may not be driving your Ford went back to new Focus around the world 88 and came up with the drawing board a dynamic new de times, but even if it is only around sign. the challenging, often rough and sometimes very busy Bay of Plenty voice activation system, which can be used roads, there is plenty within its design, its for a variety of functions, and does not ride quality and power, to make you glad you seem to struggle with fading Kiwi consochose the car you did. nants the way some do. By Richard Rennie Ford has also tried not to jam too much digital information into one place by separating the two control screens.
