In the best hands VW Master Technician Darren Peattie, Service Manger Bevan Sheppard and Tauranga MTA Technician of the Year Blair Brookbanks. Like all leading car manufacturers, Volkswagen invests millions into developing and building outstanding vehicles. They also invest as much time into training their global team of highly skilled technicians to ensure those vehicles are kept in perfect mechanical condition. The ‘Best of the Best’ of these earn the title of Master Technician and Volkswagen New Zealand recently held an award ceremony in Auckland to celebrate the completion of their first ever Master Technician training course in the Asia Pacific region. Only seven technicians in New Zealand qualified for this prestigious award and among them was Darren Peattie, Volkswagen service team leader at Farmer Autovillage in Hewletts Road, Mount Maunganui. Service manager Bevan Sheppard is understandably proud to count one of these talented young men among his experienced team in the service department. “To achieve this status, Darren had to complete six specialised training courses plus pass a series of tough practical and theory exams over an 18 month period,” says Bevan. “Only seven of the 70 VW technicians in the country were selected to complete the full training course and qualify as Master Technicians.” More good news for the Farmer Autovillage service team comes with another technician,

Blair Brookbanks, being announced as the MTA Tauranga ‘Technician of the Year’ for 2011 at the awards dinner on Saturday night. “Having two technicians achieve at these levels is just the tip of the iceberg. “Every one of our guys knows and understands their specialist car brand very well, which means that, no matter what make and model of car a customer owns, when they bring it in here for a repair or service, we will produce a better result for them, every time.” Bevan points out that this can actually translate into cost savings for mechanical repairs as well. By using the latest diagnostic technology, the service team can quickly assess the problem, identify and order the parts from their global network and then carry out the repairs in the minimum amount of time. In addition to Volkswagen, the Farmer Autovillage service department also specialises in repairs and maintenance of Audi, Nissan, Skoda, Subaru, Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep and Hyundai vehicles and all other car brands can be expertly repaired or serviced too. Customers are also able to enjoy a complimentary coffee in the comfortable Engine Room Cafe while waiting for their car or they are welcome to use the courtesy pick-up and drop-off service. One thing is assured though, their cars will receive the ‘gold star’ treatment at a cost that just might pleasantly surprise them.

For anyone out there who finds loading or unloading a roof rack a bit of a struggle, help is at hand. Just about anything that would normally be carried on a roof rack can now be loaded onto one of the convenient products in the Portilo Carrier System range. Manufactured by Westfalia, a leading global company with a reputation for innovation and safety, the full range of Portilo Carriers is now available at the Towbar Factory in Boeing Place, Mount Maunganui. Towbar Factory has been manufacturing super-strong towbars for cars, utes and 4WD vehicles for about 20 years. They also make A-frame towbars, which are specifically designed to tow cars behind motorhomes. “It’s great to be able to offer the proven Westfalia range to local people,” says Towbar Factory manager, Simon Astill. “It opens up a whole new market to us and it sits well alongside our trusted and proven, locally manufactured towbars.” Portilo Carriers are made from durable materials, slightly curved and can be easily fitted to any car, station wagon, SUV or ute. The Portilo system starts with a two-bike
rack that stows the bikes securely so they don’t knock against each other or the car. This stable carrier can then be converted into a truly versatile load solution with the addition of the Portilo Platform and Portilo Box. The 54kg payload means they also fulfil a multitude of uses. Another unit is specifically designed to carry skis and snowboards. Designed for ease of handling and loading, the Portilo carriers are compact, lightweight and ready to use straight out of the box, with no assembly required. They also come with full, plug-in brake lighting connections and a panel on the front that owners can use to fit a duplicate number plate to or Towbar Factory can supply a ‘dummy’ plate to apply if preferred. There are two more features to help ensure the Portilo range becomes a firm favourite with outdoor-loving Kiwis. Firstly, they are easy to unlock, remove from the back of the car, fold up and stow or carry away, so they don’t offer temptation to thieves. Secondly, they have a tilt-action that allows them to swing down and away from the back of the vehicle, even when fully loaded, so that a hatch or boot can be opened without having to remove the carrier. Portilo carriers are available now at the Towbar Factory and Simon says they provide full instruction and a free fitting service for customers who would rather just “get in and go” in time for the holidays. Riding for Sativa By Laura Weaser
After participating in a few charity rides, motorbike enthusiast Karl Downes decided to host his own for a worthy cause. The long-time Harley Davidson rider learnt about baby Sativa Eagle from his neighbour, who happened to be her grandparents. Sativa is the youngest patient diagnosed with a rare form of leukaemia: Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia. She has to endure weekly chemotherapy, with her parents Tim and Sheree taking her back and forth to Starship Hospital in Auckland. Touched by Sativa’s condition and the financial situation of the family, Karl is
organising a charity motorbike ride around the Rotorua Lakes on December 10. He says the response has been fast and steady, attracting more than 130 bikes and creating a convoy so big the Tauranga City Council has had to get involved in traffic management, something he didn’t expect. The $20 entry fee goes directly to Sativa, as well as the $20 for riding pillion. There will also be church groups with donation buckets and spot prizes to give away at Mount Surf Club from 1pm including a $3000 Fujitsu New Zealand heat pump. Sativa’s father Tim says the feedback has been overwhelming and is exactly what they needed. “We are currently collecting for a new car to get back and forward to Auckland on a constant basis.
“From the Facebook Page alone, we received over $3000 donated from the community. “We will use the money to start catching up on bills too so we don’t have to worry as much about money for the next six months.” Tim says Sativa has just returned from a week of intensive chemotherapy eight hours a day, but is heading into a two week break before going back again. Tim’s main hope is for Sativa to spend some of Christmas at home and out of hospital. Sativa and her family are hoping to attend the bike ride depending on her condition. Tim says Karl has also been kind enough to ride pillion for the trip. For more information, to contact Karl or register interest, visit http://upost.co.nz/?p=876
Karl Downes is a keen charity rider, but this is his first event as organiser.
