The business has also remained resilient through several significant natural disasters in the Eastern Bay of Plenty, from floods and droughts to earthquakes. “The disasters over the years have been difficult for our community, but we’re grateful that they presented us with the opportunity to help,” says Jacks Machinery administrator Bruce Pittams. “During the 2004 Bay of Plenty flood we were
The beginnings Age 40, and mid-Muldoon era, the late Graeme Jacks founded Jacks Machinery, or what was then known as Whakatane Tractor and Machinery Co Ltd. The dealership opened on Whakatane’s McAlister Street in 1970, becoming one of the country’s first standalone tractor dealerships. “In the early days, tractors were sold by car companies – Ford tractors were sold by Ford cars, and Massey Ferguson tractors were sold by the Rover group, Austin Morris,” says Steve. “At the car dealerships tractors were always the poor cousin to the cars, so it made sense to have a dedicated space for people to purchase and service their tractors.”

test of time Mill Rd in Whakatane has been Jacks Machinery’s home since 1980, starting as an empty yard that has been continually built on to. It has been joined by a Jacks Machinery site in Katikati in 2015, and a Gisborne site is opening soon. “Mill Rd has been a great spot. We’re lucky to have so much road exposure here – it’s a great way to advertise. “We lease a few extra hectares, giving both our workshop and customers a paddock to test-drive machinery.” While his sister and brother went down different paths, Steve’s mechanical mindedness saw him follow in his father’s footsteps. He has worked for Jacks Machinery since he was still at school, and gained his Advanced Trade Certification in Automotive Engineering under his father in 1981. Graeme retired in 1992, leaving Steve and sales manager Ross Fergusson to run the business together until Ross retired in 2011. Steve says continuing to diversify has been his priority since becoming the sole owner. “Being adaptable is definitely one of things that has helped us stick around.”
Covid-˜° New Zealand has been through several recessions since Jacks Machinery began – but none as unique and complex as the Covid-19 pandemic, says Steve. “We were left in limbo about whether we
were an essential service and machinery sales dropped dramatically. “We’re only getting back to some resemblance of normal now. We’re lucky that the majority of our customers are essential workers.” Being both salesmen and direct importers of international products, going overseas for conferences and training is a regular occurrence for Jacks Machinery staff. Frightening in retrospect, Steve and salesman Steve Donoghue returned from a business trip to Italy in January this year. “Covid-19 would’ve been more rampant there than we ever would’ve realised at the time. “The Seppi factory we visited is in the mountains near the German border. It wasn’t in the area that Italy has had the most trouble, but it was very close.” Steve says visiting suppliers is a great learning experience for business, and European history. “On the same trip we visited the Case IH factory in Austria – the building was used by Hitler to build Panzer tanks.” To continue training and development in the Covid-19 environment, Jacks Machinery staff have undergone online courses. “You can’t beat hands-on, face-to-face learning from industry professionals, but despite the challenge our guys have been great at adapting to online learning.” MacKenzie Dyer

The front page staple Jacks Machinery and Coast & Country News go way back. In fact, there’s not a single Coast & Country newspaper without a Jacks Machinery ad on the cover – that’s 12 papers every year for the last two decades. Sun Media directors Claire and Brian Rogers have been working with Jacks Machinery owner Steve Jacks, even before they launched Coast & Country News. “Steve was a client of ours back when we worked at another publication, so he has been advertising with Brian and I for almost 30 years,” says Claire.

come and gone to birthday milestones. Steve says he has no plans to move Jacks Machinery’s advert from its front page spot. “There’s no way I’d give it up,” says Steve. “Whenever I walk into a farming outlet, a Jacks Machinery advert is always there at the top of the Coast & Country News stand – it’s great.” Selling adverts looked a bit different 20 years ago than it does today. “Owners worked with owners back then,” says Claire. “There were no digital options at that stage. To write a Jacks Machinery advertorial, Brian and I would travel from Tauranga to Whakatane to meet with Steve and discuss content, take photos...that sort of thing.
“The relationships you build become more important than the brand”
“When we told Steve we were starting our own rural newspaper he didn’t hesitate to get on board, and has continued to support us ever since.” Steve says jumping ship to Claire and Brian’s new venture didn’t feel like taking a risk. “Our businesses are the same: they operate by people working with people,” says Steve. “When people are the business, the relationships you build become more important than the brand. I was confident Brian and Claire would keep delivering just as they did previously – and they’ve done exactly that for more than 20 years now.” Steve has supported the inside pages Coast & Country News over the years too, by investing in countless adverts and advertorials. The paper has become somewhat of a scrapbook of Jacks Machinery’s history, from brands that have
“It was a significantly longer process than it is today.” Getting an advert to print may be more efficient now, but Claire says the ‘old days’ certainly had their perks. “We’d visit our clients frequently so they became our friends. As business owners, we all shared a mutual respect. “It was difficult to give up, so I kept juggling the running of the business and being an ad rep for many years.” After a long relationship, it seems fitting that the businesses share a significant birthday year: 2020 – which marks 50 years of Jacks Machinery and 20 years for Coast & Country News. “You don’t really realise how much time has passed until you reflect back,” says Claire. “To have someone supporting us for so long has MacKenzie Dyer been amazing.”

JACKS MACHINERY Celebrating ˜° years ˛˝˙°-ˆ°ˆ°
Beneath the vines When it comes to stocking specialty orchard equipment, Jacks Machinery was ahead of the game. “We stocked our first horticulture specific tractor, the Iseki, in 1978,” says Jacks Machinery owner Steve Jacks. It was good timing, as it coincided with the Government offering investment allowances for kiwifruit plantings, seeing the first growth of the kiwifruit industry in the Bay of Plenty. Since then, Jacks Machinery has witnessed the rise and fall of the kiwifruit industry several times. “It’s boomed and stopped due to various things, of course including vine-killing disease Psa.” In recent years, kiwifruit plantings have grown steadily as land values have risen in the Western Bay of Plenty. “That’s why starting a yard in Katikati in 2015 was a natural step for us. “We’ve always had a presence there, even back when I was a Jacks Machinery apprentice, but having a physical Katikati location has been much more efficient especially as horticulture continues to grow,” says Steve.
Move to Gisborne To follow kiwifruit growth once again, Jacks Machinery purchased land in Gisborne last month for a new yard. “There’s a lot of kiwifruit licences being bought and taken up down there, so it’s going to be a growth area for specialty horticulture tractors.” Steve says dairy farming in the Eastern Bay of Plenty is also seeing growth. “The Eastern BOP doesn’t typically have large farms, but there’s a scattering of dairy farm groups and Maori trust farmers that are a growing force.
“They’re looking to utilise their land in more efficient ways and there’s just been a dairy factory put up in Kawerau – a Maori trust operation that’s been styled on the Miraka set-up in Taupo. “We’re looking forward to seeing more of this kind of growth.”
Upgrading Steve says he’s also seeing an increase in orchardists wanting to upgrade their tractors. “In the picking season orchardists traditionally use old tractors, because they’re a dime a dozen and all they have to do is tow a bin. “If you watch a Country Calendar episode about an orchardist, seeing an old Massey Ferguson or a David Brown used to be almost guaranteed. “But nowadays, the tractors are expected to pull many more bins than before, which is problematic when using a two wheel drive tractor with dry brakes and a single-ratio gear box. So to keep workers safe and to keep business moving, many orchardists are looking to upgrade.” This has led to a big sale for Jacks Machinery. “We sell a specialist horticulture tractor by Antonio Carraro, which we’ve stocked since 2012. They’re built to go under canopies so they sit low, and all of the wheels are the same size. “We’ve just ordered 32 Antonio Carraro tractors from the factory in one hit for a BOP orchard business. That’s a big order, even by European standards. It has been a fantastic opportunity for us.”
Many orchards are moving on from driving an old David Brown or Massey Ferguson.

chef to be the Jacks Machinery’s payroll person. “She worked in quite a high class restaurant before, so she really enjoyed the change of pace coming here,” says Steve.
His style and hair colour may be a bit different 16 years later, but what hasn’t changed is how much Bruce enjoys his job. “I worked in many different jobs before coming here – from driving a courier to working with indoor plants and on a cattle station in Australia’s Northern Territory. “I like working here as I get to be involved in a lot of different things, and meet a lot of great people. “Some of our customers have been coming to Jacks Machinery as long as I’ve worked here – we’ve gone grey together.”
There are still plenty of new faces too – Vanessa Hauwai has been a Jacks Machinery team member for three months. “I felt really lucky to get a job after the Covid-19 lockdown,” says Vanessa. “I’m still new, but I’m enjoying it a lot so far.” Steve says bringing in new blood is something the business has always done. “We’re fortunate to have many highly skilled workers who have been with us for a long time. Part of being able to achieve this is bringing in new people who are keen to learn, so we always have a new specialist coming up the ranks.” Steve says ongoing training may be part of the reason staff members stick around. “We’re always learning here through external workshops and training days. It makes us better at what we do, and keeps it interesting.”
Lots of long-standers Bruce isn’t the only longstanding staff member – there’s six people who have worked at Jacks for well over a decade across all departments, including sales manager Brucie Donald, parts manager Wade Bolger, and workshop manager Peter Rust. That includes owner Steve Jacks, who began working for his father and Jacks Machinery founder, Graeme Jacks, in 1973. Steve started as a part-timer while still at school, and has stayed since. When Vicky Jacks married Steve 39 years ago, she swapped her hectic schedule as a

at the wheel their fingertips – even those who live in town. “One of our staff was moving into the second floor of an apartment building in town. “The furniture wouldn’t fit up the stairway, so we used a MultiOne to lift the bigger stuff up to the second floor and pass it through the window – it made for a funny site.”
Loyal returnees When it comes to keeping the Jacks Machinery engine ticking over, Steve says the customers are just as vital as the staff. Geoff Pierce has been buying machinery from Jacks since starting his contracting business, Geoff ’s Contracting Ltd, 25 years ago. “I’ve developed really good relationships with the guys at Jacks over the years, especially with Peter Rust in the workshop,” says Geoff. “Servicing and purchasing equipment is efficient at Jacks which is ideal for running a contracting business, because it’s all on all of the time. “I’ve purchased pretty much all of my products from Jacks because they have everything I need – from my Polaris side-by-side to the Italian-made mulcher I bought last week.”
Di˛ erent times Jacks Machinery has 20 employees – and despite expanding to two more sites, that’s less people than they had in the 1980s. “The roles we had in the early days looked a bit different to what we have today – we even had a tea lady working for us back then,” says Steve. “Modern technology means two office staff now do the work it used to take five to do manually. “As an owner I’m grateful to have such a friendly and capable team behind me, and supportive customers. “They’ve helped Jacks Machinery stand the test MacKenzie Dyer of time.”
Today’s Jacks Machinery team.
Ideal for contracting The mechanical support offered at Jacks Machinery is what made Watson S & R Contracting Ltd owner Stu Watson “change from blue tractors to red”. “I bought a Case IH Puma 240hp tractor from them, which was a great choice for my ag contracting business. “I’ve bought about six products from Jacks Machinery over the last five years, and will keep going back.”

JACKS MACHINERY Celebrating ˜° years ˛˝˙°-ˆ°ˆ°
Stocking the best There’s a knack to gauging what the next big thing in machinery will be, and Jacks Machinery has it. “When we started stocking ride-on lawnmowers no one had them, and there was an attitude of ‘who would want one of those?’” says Jacks Machinery owner Steve Jacks. “The same thing happened with side-by-sides, and now they’re considered pretty much essential for farming in New Zealand. We’re always looking at the market to figure out what is next.”
One machine, many uses
Above: MultiOne with a tree shaker with collector attachment.
Perhaps Jacks Machinery’s biggest fortune-telling success story is the MultiOne. The compact loader has 170 available attachments that can be added on. Its versatility makes MultiOne ideal for a wide range of uses, from general-use attachments like buckets and forks, to very specialised equipment like a solar panel washer to a tree shaker and collector for olives and nuts. “MultiOne is a great option for agriculturalists, tree surgeons, builders...the list goes on. “It’s an economic solution to a variety of problems.”
Simply better
Jacks Machinery was ahead of the game in stocking ride-on lawnmowers.
MultiOne’s clever design is highlighted when comparing it to a standard skid steer. “The MultiOne machine is relatively simple – it’s a computer-less, diesel machine. But, their design makes them top of the line,” says Steve. “Its simplicity is an advantage because it means a diesel mechanic can easily service them, so we can send them to customers throughout the country without issue.”
IMPORTERS DISTRIBUTORS 0800 77 88 99
Thanks to its articulated frame, MultiOne can navigate tight spaces much more accurately than a skid steer, while not ruining the ground. “They’re very popular in the UK where they work inside more, as MultiOne can navigate tricky spaces and have considerably better visibility. “All of our MultiOnes have extendable booms that hydraulic out, meaning they can reach further and lift higher than a skid steer.” That’s despite MultiOne being much lighter than a skid steer – they can be towed by a standard car or ute. Jacks Machinery stumbled upon MultiOne while seeking a machinery solution for local beekeepers. “We had customers in the honey industry wanting a machine to shift their beehives. “Locally there wasn’t many suitable options, so we looked around the world and found MultiOne – it has a specific attachment for moving beehives.” Jacks Machinery is a direct importer of MultiOne, and can supply the machine, and its 170 variations, throughout New Zealand. “It’s been an absolute business win.”
Other imports MultiOne isn’t the only high quality Italian brand imported directly by Jacks Machinery. Faresin provides a variety of mixer wagons and telehandlers ideal for farmers and industrial projects, and Seppi is a brand purely dedicated to mulchers, both PTO for tractors and hydraulic for diggers. In addition, Jacks Machinery are dealers for almost 20 more brands, including Trimax mowing systems, Hustler ride-on mowers, McIntosh trailers, Polaris UTVs, and Silvan sprayers. “Our large range means we really take the time out to help our customers buy the machine that best serves the job they need doing.

JACKS MACHINERY Celebrating ˜° years ˛˝˙°-ˆ°ˆ°
“Agriculture machinery and tractor technology has advanced tremendously,” “We have a paddock out the back for customers to take the machines for a spin, and our sales team are always on the road getting familiar with our customer’s environment and specific needs. “Machinery is a big investment, so we want to ensure customers are happy with the product they choose – whether it’s a $250 chainsaw or $250,000 tractor.” Several brands have come and gone from the Jacks’ sales line-up, but the business still has parts and service equipment for brands they don’t stock.
Tech advances And it’s fair to say the products Jacks Machinery stock today look a bit different to what they sold 50 years ago. “Agriculture machinery and tractor technology has advanced tremendously,” says Steve. “To service products before, you really only needed a mechanic and a sparky. Now, our workshop staff have to know how to do both roles and be computer savvy as well. “You still have basic tractors, but there are sophisticated options kitted with GPS systems, complex interfaces, radars to get true ground speed and all sorts.” Electric machinery is a technological advancement that’s starting to gain traction, with brands like MultiOne and Faresin now selling electric-powered options. “The technology is certainly getting there, but electric machinery is still significantly more expensive – you can buy a petrol ride-on lawnmower for $5500 and an electric one is $13,000. “The option’s there for customers looking to invest in environmentally-friendly machinery, which of course costs significantly less to run. However, battery life and the price point both have a way to go before petrol and diesel machines go anywhere.” MacKenzie Dyer

Welcoming Case IH Just some of the Case IH range at Jacks Machinery.
Jacks Machinery turns the yard red Case IH Agriculture is the latest addition to Jacks Machinery’s tractor line-up, joining the fleet in September last year.
The Jacks dealership team from left: Steve Jacks, Bruce Donald, Daniel Benjamin and Steve Donoghue.
Selling at Jacks Machinery has allowed Case IH to provide more direct support to their Eastern Bay of Plenty customers, and is the perfect horticulture hotspot for their recently-introduced Quantum tractor series. With a strong customer service reputation preceding them, appointing Jacks Machinery as a retailer was an easy choice for the brand, which has been in the business of perfecting tractor technology for 178 years. Case IH brand manager David Silk says Jacks Machinery has a particularly strong reputation in working with kiwifruit growers and understands the industry. “Horticulture and kiwifruit are unique sectors of the market,” says David. “They have different requirements and the Jacks team bring the level of knowledge and expertise that is needed for us to be successful with our speciality tractor offering.” Jacks Machinery admin man Bruce Pittams says Case IH are an asset to them too. “As one of our customers said to me recently: ‘You don’t need to sell a Case IH tractor – they sell themselves’. “They already have a great following here.”

Quantum tractors have been positioned to provide a basic specification, with reliability and value for money the key considerations. Quantum tractors have low seat heights and excellent manoeuvrability, which is ideal for navigating through kiwifruit vines, as well as grape, avocado and apple orchards. The Quantum V is the narrowest tractor in the series, making it the option best suited to kiwifruit operations. The larger, high horsepower utility tractors that Case IH are known for have also joined Jacks Machinery. The Maxxum, Optum and Steiger tractors are ideal for largescale farming operations and contractors, with a horsepower range of 110hp to 600hp. On the smaller end are the compact 20hp to 60hp range of tractors, which are ideal for lifestyle blocks.
Selling like hotcakes Jacks Machinery owner Steve Jacks says the Quantum range quickly proved to be a retail success – they sold out in the first three months. The reliability of a Case IH tractor is its greatest selling point, says Steve. “Orchard tractors are quite intensive. They can rack up a lot of hours with mowing and mulching, so they can do quite a lot of heavy work. “Orchard vehicles are a fast-mover here. With our history in horticulture, we dived straight in with the Quantums and had instant success with them. It’s been great.”

Sold on service Despite Jacks Machinery’s extensive product range, owner Steve Jacks says sales isn’t even the most important part of the business. That award goes to their repair and service offerings. “Being able to service what we sell is essential,” says Steve. “It gives us an in-depth understanding of our machines so we can best match them to the needs of our customers, and help them maintain their investments.”
Parts a plenty Jacks Machinery’s servicing ability doesn’t stop with the more than 20 brands that they sell – many other tractors and machine brands are also welcome at the workshop. “These include brands we used to sell, as well as others,” says Steve. “Being accessible to all farmers, orchardists and lifestyle block owners who need their machinery serviced or repaired is important to us, no matter what brands they own.” To have the capacity to do this, Jacks Machinery has more than $1 million worth of parts on-site organised throughout two large rooms, and a dedicated parts team.
Decades of experience The team is backed by decades of experience – parts manager Wade Bolger has 30 years’ experience alone, spending 13 of those years at Jacks Machinery. “Because the business has been operating for so many years, we’ve been able to build up a huge range of parts and servicing equipment.” Experience is also in abundance within Jacks
Machinery’s workshop team, which includes eight mechanics. Workshop manager Peter Rust has worked at Jacks Machinery since he left school, which clocks in at 16 years of machine servicing experience. It was a similar story with the workshop manager who trained Peter – he worked at Jacks Machinery for more than three decades before recently retiring. “As well as being an expert at what he does, Peter is great with people,” says Steve. “We have people who have purchased machinery from us purely because they had a great experience with Peter and our workshop team. It’s a real testament to their customer service skills.”

Help, fast After working with the Bay of Plenty’s rural community for 50 years, the Jacks Machinery team understand the disruption machine breakdowns can cause a business, especially for farmers. “Having a machine break down can affect the whole farm. Getting the issue sorted as quickly as possible is essential, so business can resume. “That’s why we have five field service trucks on-hand, so our mechanics can offer an efficient on-site service.”
Always upskilling Jacks Machinery mechanics stay up-to-date with machinery technology advances through ongoing training. “Keeping up with training has always been really important to us. It’s a worthy investment that has allowed us to evolve and adapt to forever changing times, and provide the best service possible.” MacKenzie Dyer
