Country living, city convenience Three Creeks Estate releases top sections for 2020 Three Creeks Estate is a new neighbourhood in Ohauiti, Tauranga, where peaceful country living meets city convenience. As you drive along its tree-lined entrance, you are whisked away from the hustle and bustle and into a lush, tranquil paradise. Wide paved walkways and leafy avenues create a feeling of space, while stunning new homes complement the landscape and provide a sense of style. Designed with active relaxers in mind, ˜ ree Creeks Estate is suited to families, retirees and professionals alike. Residents love how everything is within an easy distance – Tauranga city centre, beaches, dining and shopping, schools and entertainment. Yet when they return home to the picturesque hillside, it feels private and peaceful. It is truly rare to ÿ nd a residential development that provides such a beautiful setting amongst native ˛ ora and fauna yet is just minutes away from the city. With early stages selling fast, the developer has now released a limited number of premium elevated sites for 2020. Here you can ÿ nd the ideal spot to build your dream home on superior land, with the newly-released sections o˝ ering outstanding views out to Mount Maunganui and the Paciÿ c Ocean.
Secure one of these hilltop sites and you’ll never want to leave. ˜ is is the time to bring your ideas to life – build a wrap-around deck to make the most of the sun and views, create your dream outdoor sanctuary for al fresco dining, or build an upstairs bedroom to enjoy the birdsong over your morning co˝ ee. ˜ e ideas will start ˛ owing when you see the sections. Previously a 21-hectare organic orchard, sections are blessed with rich fertile soil which is ideal for growing vegetable gardens and fruit trees. Sections are large, ranging from 400-700sqm, so there’s plenty of room for the children to play on the grass or get the paddling pool out in summer. Surrounding bush reserves provide most sections with a private, picture-perfect outlook and a delightful array of birdlife to enjoy from the garden. ˜ e land of ˜ ree Creeks Estate was historically known to local M˙ori as Te K˙k˙riki. Land owners and horticulturists Peter and Maya Sievwright, who nurtured the land for 30 years, say the English name “˜ ree Creeks” refers to the Kaitemako Stream and its two tributaries that run through the valley and down to Welcome Bay. “˜ ese streams are still home to native freshwater eels and whitebait and particular care has been taken to protect the streams and surrounding wildlife,” says Peter. ˜ ree Creeks Estate Sales Manager, Mike de Seymour, says residents will enjoy 5km of private walking trails which run alongside these streams.
“˜ e trail starts at the Kaitemako Stream and waterfall and o˝ ers a beautiful walking and running experience for residents and their furry friends. ˜ ere are also a number of grassy enclaves nestled alongside the streams, providing plenty of areas to relax in the sun, read a book and enjoy the birdsong,” says Mike. In a market of sprawling, high-density subdivisions it is hard to ÿ nd quality land that provides such a peaceful setting amongst native ˛ ora and fauna. With neighbouring developments recording house sales in excess of $1 million, prospective buyers can feel conÿ dent with both the long-term value and lifestyle beneÿ ts of building in such a special environment.
˜ ere’s no waiting required – you can kick-start your dream lifestyle today from just $279,000. Contact Mike de Seymour to learn more and see the sections for yourself. You can contact Mike on 021 796 181 or mike@threecreeksestate.co.nz or visit www.threecreeksestate.co.nz to see the master plan.

Rhythm and Raga The perfect introduction in Indian music After a sold out show in 2019, Kutu Mukherjee is back in March presenting the second ‘Rhythm & Raga’ in Tauranga, an evening of Indian melodies. As a musician trained in western classical music, I find my ear and mind experiences a fascinating shift on hearing the microtones, known as shruti that is played across the instruments. It’s as if I need to tune my own ear to the melodic motifs while Kutu weaves the fabric of her music on her harmonium, and her tanpura. As I do, I find it becomes an awakening to exploring the special art forms that have come to New Zealand. One element that makes Indian classical music unique is the raga or raag. This defines the melodic aspects of the music, and is a melodic pattern defined by an ascending and a descending scale, with key notes and phrases bringing out the entire character of the raga. “I’m excited to bring back a taste of the complex and long standing traditions of Indian music,” says Kutu. “One of Aotearoa’s most wonderful aspects is the melting pot of different cultures.” Kutu teaches basic voice training and classical singing, and has a music degree, having completed her honours paper in Tagore music. Rabindranath Tagore, also known as the Bard of Bengal was a prolific poet, musician, artist and writer, winning the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1913. “He has written more than 2000 songs and novels,”
says Kutu. “I am going to sing a few of his songs as well.” She has invited four other performers to join her in delivering a well-rounded high calibre musical program. They are Amit Sengupta, a very renowned vocalist who runs a music academy in Auckland; Siddharta Ray, a percussionist from Auckland, Hemant Thakkar also from Auckland; and Aritra Sengupta a budding vocalist. As well as semi-classical Indian music, the musicians plan to perform other popular styles of Indian music. “I have a lot of respect for Bollywood song, I think sometimes I prefer them. “The other artists coming from Auckland are going to sing folk songs, semi-classical and old Hindi film songs.” At the performance in 2019, some said that it was the first time they had experienced this kind of rich Indian culture, says Kutu. “It was amazing. I like the environment at the Jam Factory. The audience are so interested. The other artists also found it was a very cosy experience with a quality audience.” ‘Rhythm & Raga – an evening of Indian melodies’ is the perfect introduction to Indian music and will be held at 7pm on March 14 at The Jam Factory. For those interested in learning more, at the 21st Tauranga Multicultural Festival on March 22, Kutu will be running an Indian music workshop at the Incubator. Rosalie Liddle Crawford

Have you explored the bottom of the Mariana trench and the top of Mt Everest? Flown to the Moon, sailed a yacht, brought a T-Rex to life? Is there a way to do all this and not leave Tauranga? Matt Rencher found a way, three years ago, with Virtual Reality. Since then, he’s been on a mission to make VR accessible to everyone. “The reactions! That’s the best part.” Recently I wrote a story about three octogenarians sky diving. Unfortunately on the day, one of the trio was unable to jump, which prompted me to ask Matt to help me find him a similar experience. Last time I met Matt, about two years ago, was when I tried Virtual Reality for the first time, in his converted garage. Today I was stunned to find myself walking into a massive space called The Cave – it’s a heaven for video game enthusiasts, science and sci-fi fans, and the tech-curious, but it’s far more than that. Unbeknown to me, Sandra Atherstone who is a member of the Papamoa branch of the ‘60s Up movement’ had been watching the Papamoa Christmas parade and saw the giant metal robots on The Cave float go past. Intrigued, she went along to The Cave with her grandson to see what it was all about. On discovering that she could explore virtual worlds providing experiences she’d never had, she asked what other experiences were available and

suitable for people aged 60 and older. “We have 200 people over 60 in our group,” says Sandra. “I’d never been able to do skiing because I came from Africa and there’s no snow there. So I went skiing. My husband Vernon went scuba diving. He’s never seen the bottom of the ocean, so for him, that was amazing. “I thought, there’s so many people in our group who must have things on their bucket list that they’ve never done.” Obviously Matt’s vision is contagious. Spurred on by the opportunity to share the experience with others, Sandra recruited 11 members of the Papamoa 60s Up to join her for the first official ‘senior session’ at The Cave Papamoa. The hosts at The Cave guided each of them through an immersive environment, introducing them to their new reality and making sure everyone felt safe and had an enjoyable time. “Most of us started off with a flight to the Moon which is a sit down experience so we got used to the controls and how things work,” says Peter Gulik, president of the Papamoa 60s Up group. “Once we progressed from that we could look at doing skiing and other activities.” Peter’s wife Karina decided to go scuba diving, finding herself amongst whales and jellyfish. “It was absolutely marvellous,” says Peter. “Karina was most impressed and said it was better than going on a cruise. And it’s a lot cheaper!” It was a first time experience too for Rob and Barbara Hansen.

Seniors experience Virtual Reality for the first time London and Africa that she’d visited with her husband. “I zoomed in on places that we had visited when we’ve been overseas, and I could travel right to the door. It was just amazing. I spent most of my time crying.” Matt’s best friend and business partner Jayden says he’s found it immensely rewarding seeing seniors experience what VR can provide. “Virtual reality can get emotional for people. VR provides moments that most people don’t get to experience.” It hasn’t taken long for The Cave to add ‘Senior Sessions’ as a regular weekly class. Each Wednesday, from 10am-12pm, you’ll find seniors with a flat white in one hand, a jam scone in the other, off to explore their imaginations. The Cave Papamoa can cater for up to 24 players at a time with solo and multiplayer virtual reality arenas, VR and motion racing simulators, an arcade and console gaming lounge, and a pool table and dart board. “The whale was swimming past me and his big eye was looking at me,” says Barbara. “There was a shipwreck down there on the bottom and he just flicked his tail and took off. It was just absolutely gorgeous. I just loved it.” “I thoroughly enjoyed it,” says Rob, who went on the Apollo 11 mission. “I was chasing zombies. Or they were chasing me. And I went up in a lift 40 storeys up, walked out onto a plank where there was a pile of doughnuts. You have to pick one up without dropping it or falling off. That was quite real. “And then I drove Bathurst. That was great.” One lady who had recently lost her husband found herself choosing experiences that reminded her of him. “I hate the cold and snow but decided to do the Everest experience because he loved the snow, and because I knew I’d be safe and secure and that it wasn’t really happening. It was absolutely amazing and terrifying too. But it’s something my husband would have done.” Despite finding the outing to be quite emotional, she also tried out Google Earth, choosing locations in

Le Dîner en Blanc Elegant dining en masse The mystery shrouding Le Dîner en Blanc Tauranga is part of its magic and allure. The mass intimacy and elegance, the dignified etiquette, the sea of white enchanted loveliness and charming sophistication – all woven into Tauranga’s late summer hues. Rain or shine, nearly 1000 refined diners attired in snowy white will allow themselves to be whisked away to an unknown destination for an extravagant ethereal evening of dining, entertainment and elegance. Where will it be? What shall I wear? Wear white is the reply. Dress entirely in white from head to toe. With weeks to prepare, diners can explore their imaginations and their wardrobes, go shopping, and create their own stylish expression. Transformed into swanky, splendid or spectacular versions of themselves, they are then led into a whimsical luxurious outdoor dining experience. Le Dîner en Blanc concept began in Paris in 1988, when Frenchman François Pasquier simply invited a group of friends to an elegant outdoor dinner at Bois de Boulogne, as he had insufficient space at his home to cater for them. He asked them to dress in white so they could find each other. This celebration of the French ‘art of living’ has captured the imagination of people across the globe, uniting thousands of guests dressed entirely in white for a chic and fun pop-up dinner in more than 80 cities and 35 countries.

BUILD YOUR DREAM INTO REALITY AT PAPAMOA BEACH
The dining starts with the tradition of napkin waving; and the lighting of sparklers signals the beginning of guests mingling. This is the fourth year of Le Dîner en Blanc Tauranga. White angels on stilts, lush décor and impressively good live music and roaming musicians are only some of the carefully choreographed surprises that have awaited diners as they’ve found themselves stepping into opulent extravagance in Pilot Bay, on the Tauranga waterfront and amongst the roses in Cliff Rd. People love to guess where the dinner will be held. “There’s a lot of secrecy involved,” says co-host Rachelle Duffy. The location is kept confidential, adding to the excitement. “We’re very lucky here in the Bay of Plenty, because we have so many fantastic, beautiful spaces where we can hold it.” The two directors and hosts Rachelle Duffy and Kimberley Clelland have a contract to run the Tauranga event with the international overseeing organisation. They’ve excelled at creating a successful fabulous dining experience that is par excellence, lifting the city vibe and introducing a sphere of vibrancy and cultural convivial grace. Not knowing the location, who will be performing on the night, or what’s going to happen on arrival are all elements that build suspense. Heightened anticipation spills over into pleasurable delight as the evening progresses, with all the senses aroused.

“It’s very chic, it’s very wonderful, and people love it”
Along with existing sponsors Palm Springs and Farmer Auto Village, the organisers are introducing GH Mumm champagne as a new sponsor this year. “They have a fantastic portfolio of wines and I think everyone is becoming quite excited about that,” says Rachelle. Rachelle and Kimberley have involved group leaders and table leaders in the smooth running of this art of celebrating being together, with 50 guests allocated per two table leaders. “We engage with the table leaders about a year in advance and have meetings throughout the year but they don’t know the location either,” says Rachelle. The guests purchase their tickets, and are sent information about their departure point. “You arrive at the departure point where you are allocated a table leader and they become your host for the whole evening.” Departure points at past events have included The Lakes, Mount Maunganui and downtown Tauranga with guests then transported by buses and even on board the Kewpie as they’ve found themselves brought across the harbour to Pilot Bay for the inaugural event. This year, participants don’t need to bring their own tables and chairs. “We’ve organised it for them. It’s just for this year, based on the secret location that we’re doing. “They bring everything else. They can bring their
own food or purchase a picnic hamper through our e-store.” A lot of effort goes into dressing up the tables. “The participation is really beautiful. People put a lot of time and energy into their table display. It’s really fantastic to see the creativity.” It’s magical theatre and it’s a dinner.
The guests themselves become part of the artistic display as they seat themselves at tables graced with their own often lavish displays of flowers, candelabra and fine food. Imagination and fun are key, along with the desire to relax and enjoy the evening as the sun sets into a warm glow and the night comes alive with fairy lights.
Eating together is a simple human pleasure. It breaks down social barriers, with people open and friendly as they enjoy each other’s company. Rachelle sums up the romantic evening of gracious dining well. “It’s very chic, it’s very wonderful, and people love it.”

Fitness for everyone Of course, you can be less intensive, take a bit Getting regular exercise is essential for longer and go further, like a brisk walk or run around everyone but doing it right and finding the the base track. The key thing is to get the heart rate time can be a bit daunting. So here’s a bit of up and make sure the lungs are puffing a bit. inspiration and a few tips. The Ministry of Health breaks exercise up into four categories; Aerobic, flexibility, strength and balance. Some people choose a gym to meet all of these needs and that’s a great way to get consistent exercise and advice when you need it, regardless of weather. Ali Rudd from Aspire Health and Sports says they have steered away from just being a gym, and they see their purpose-built facility as a place to “exercise socialise and revitalise”. For many people, one of the quickest ways to get fit around these parts is simply to take a vigorous walk up the Mount or the Papamoa Hills. Steps and steep hills are one of the most intensive and beneficial activities there is.
Get flexible
When it comes to flexibility, popular activities and gym classes like yoga and tai chi will do the trick but even everyday chores can help – like vacuuming or sweeping, says the Ministry of Health’s website. Strength exercises should also be included in any fitness programme and gyms make this pretty simple for you. Ali from Aspire says they have a large weights area but also a quiet upstairs circuit with the unique Kaiser equipment, a cardio room, a function training and high performance centre as well as a members only aquatic centre which includes a 25m swimming pool, hot and cold spas and a sauna. Fitness guru and Auckland Council Pools and Leisure Fitness Centre Manager Matt Nash says people should schedule their activity the same way they do with work meetings, or their children’s sport. He says any exercise is better than none and it is about finding what motivates you, whether it’s group fitness, swimming, resistance training or even climbing. For those who are really serious about their fitness or need the convenience of a gym Ali says people should go for a “one-stop-shop”, which includes exercise experts to ensure goals and needs are met.
Here are some tips from Aspire Eat clean and healthy, be kind to yourself, plan and prioritise your exercise, take advantage of trainers and expertise, understand the basics of building muscle, work your full range of motion, get out of breath, hydrate properly, get good sleep and stay motivated.

Vintage wedding dress fashion show The Tauranga Historical Society’s annual garden party For more than 40 years, the garden at Brain Watkins House in Cameron Rd has come alive with live music, stalls and memories of a bygone era. Last year, a parade of vintage clothing was featured at the annual garden party. “This year we’re having a vintage wedding dress fashion show,” says Julie Green who is the president of the Tauranga Historical Society. “This is our 41st garden party. We have about 20 wedding dresses that have been lent or donated, ranging from 1935 right through to 2002. “My daughter Amy is coordinating the fashion show with between 12 and 15 models who will be wearing some of the dresses that can be fitted.” As well as the vintage wedding dress fashion show, there will be live music by Back Porch, and stalls with books, plants, bric-a-brac, cakes and raffles. “We always have a book stall. And we’re having a magazine stall with historical magazines,” says Julie. “And people can buy afternoon tea.” In 1979, Elva Brain - the youngest member of her family - died, leaving her home on Cameron Rd to the Tauranga Historical Society Incorporated. Her death ended nearly 100 years of
occupancy by just one family. Elva married William George Watkins when she was 72-years-old and outlived him. She was a keen member of the Tauranga Historical Society Incorporated, and left the house and land to the society in her will. It is now called Brain Watkins House. This year, other organisations have also been invited to raise funds at the garden event. Save the Children Fund will have knitting and baking, and Abbeyfield Western Bay of Plenty will be selling their popular jams, jellies and pickles. “Abbeyfield are raising money to build a house in Katikati for older people to live communally but who can’t afford to go into a village,” says Julie. “We’ll also be having a membership drive this year which we’ve never done before. It only costs $35 a year to join the society. “And we encourage people to come along to the garden party dressed in period costume or dress up vintage style.
It’s just a gold coin donation at the gate.” The house will be open for visitors to take a guided tour through, at the usual price of $5 and it’s well-worth doing. For something a little elegant, head along to the Vintage Garden Party at Brain Watkins House from 1.30pm – 4.30pm Sunday March 1 dressed in your best frock or dashing attire. There is parking available in 3rd Avenue West, Tauranga.

Gumboots and golf The great Bayleys Kaimai Golf Classic A pair of gumboots, a piece of downpipe slung over the shoulder to hold a few clubs, and it’s all ‘FORE’ steam ahead on the sheep farm fairway as the townies tee off. On a Friday in March, about 60 corporate ‘execs’, with a few drinks warming up the gills, will board a bus in downtown Tauranga and motor off into the grassy hinterlands of the high country in the lower Kaimai Range. Phil Mangos from Bayleys Real Estate is the main sponsor and part of the team of many volunteers of this popular booay golfing event. The Kaimai School Golf Classic itself has been going for about 17 years, but this is the fifth corporate year sponsored by Phil and Bayleys. “It started five years ago with about six teams. Now it’s maxed out and is a fundraiser for the Kaimai School,” says Phil. “We fundraised for a skatepark. Now we’re into the second year of fundraising for a fix-up of their school pool.” At the first corporate day about $8000 was raised. “Then we got to ten, twelve and last year we raised $20,000 for the school in one day,” says Phil. Sixteen teams of four are bussed out from the city on a Friday to an old woolshed on the Midson’s Farm in Soldiers Rd. A total of 64 townies playing golf around the sheep dung. “We give them a burger and a few more beers,

Other companies have heard about it on the corporate sheep vine and there’s now a waiting list. “They hear it’s such a great day and want to come and join in.” The 12-hole course covering five or six hectares has large holes holding ten litre buckets and the odd trough. There’s an effort made to prepare the green for the putts. ”It starts getting mowed about two weeks out.” Despite being relatively huge, Phil reckons it’s not easy to get the ball in to the holes. “You need three clubs, that’s all. It’s a good family day.â€? “We usually get about 30 or 40 people on the Saturday but it can handle more so we welcome people to contact Kaimai School for details and come along for a great day out.â€?
