Corben Simpson A rock legend comes out to play I met Corben Simpson last year, backstage of the Bands. 1970 he married his sweetheart. at Maurice Greer’s concert. Quietly blending In “I had to leave that band because my wife was in in behind the scenes, he was helping out as Hamilton, so I had to go over there, didn’t I. “After getting married, we went to Rotorua and Mr Human Instinct set up for his show at then we went all over the place.” The Entertainers Club in Tauranga. Afterwards I went home and looked Corben up online. “He was massive in his day, performing in like a Woodstock-type concert,” says Entertainers Club president Nicole Saunders. She is meaning, I think, the Redwood 70 Pop Festival in West Auckland. Or Nambassa, 1973. I was too young to go. “The audience egged him to take his shirt off, and he ended up on stage with just his guitar.” How do Kiwi rock stars live nearly unnoticed in Tauranga suburbia? Where are the documentary film makers to record these legends? I rang him up. “I’ve been in Tauranga for four years, before that I was in Katikati for 15 years, and before that in Waihi for many years.” Starting off in Auckland, Corben moved to Rotorua when he was 16 – “that’s when I started playing in a band” – and at age 18 moved across to Tauranga forming the band ‘Sons and Lovers’ with keyboard player Alan Moon, drummer Ally Mathews and Denny Price on vocals. Corben was on vocals and bass. It was 1968 and they were in hot demand in Hamilton and Auckland, also winning first equal in the Waikato-Bay of Plenty Battle

Landing in Wellington, his new band Littlejohn recorded their first single ‘Everybody Knows’. Drummer Bruno Lawrence, already a well-known actor, along with Corben and Tony Littlejohn pulled in crowds as a trio at Wellington’s Lucifer’s nightclub with Alan Moon and lead guitarist Kemp Tuirirangi soon joining them. They were also in possession of a large red 1948 Leyland Tiger bus, previously owned by Wellington City Council. After recording an album, Littlejohn became BLERTA with the plan to tour the red bus through the NZ heartland. Corben had come up with the name BLERTA although afterwards it was suggested it could also stand for ‘Bruno Lawrence’s Electric Revelation and Travelling Apparition’. Now, 50 years since Corben wrote and recorded his hit single ‘Dance All Around the World’, he still gets a little peeved that many don’t know he wrote it. “They don’t really associate me with that song, all people know is BLERTA the band, and Bruno Lawrence the actor who was BLERTA’s drummer. They don’t know I wrote it, that I’m the singer. They ask me ‘what did you achieve in your life, Corben?’ I reply ‘oh you know that song Dance all around the World? That’s me’. ‘Bullshit that’s not you’, ‘yes it

is’, ‘no it’s not’. I don’t know how many times I’ve had that argument.” The hit song reached number 13 in the NZ music charts in 1972 and voted 18th best New Zealand song of all time. A musical highlight was meeting Ravi Shankar, father of American singer-songwriter Norah Jones. “Meeting him – it turned my life around.” He’s also shaken hands with Prince Charles and met a lot of other famous people. “I toured New Zealand with Michael Nesmith from the Monkees, just him and I. We were in the back of a limousine with a chauffeur in a uniform and spent the whole two weeks together being driven through the whole country. That was a highlight of my life.” He also opened a lot of shows for overseas artists. “I was doing a concert at the Wellington Opera House about 1975, I was only a young fella. I stopped for a break halfway through and went out the back to my room and who was waiting for me there but Kenny Rogers.” The famous American singer had heard Corben playing Jew’s harp on a recording and brought him a Jew’s harp from the US. “Kenny Rogers came to my show! He came to my show and blew my mind.” Although opening shows as an individual

artist, he’d rather play music with others. “So that’s what I’m doing,” says Corben about his upcoming performance on July 12 at The Entertainers Club. “I’ve got the best musicians in town. Simon Graham – he’s a drummer’s drummer in this town, and Mike Kirk – he’s a guitar player extraordinaire. They’re really good and I’m proud to be playing with these fellas. And we’ll be backing Fiona Cosgrove.” Known for her soulful tone, and great performance, Fiona sings a mix of blues, soul, jazz and funk. Nicole says Corben is a poet. She saw him playing a few months ago and booked him. “He sang at the Silver Scroll song writing awards last year in front of thousands of people, blew the roof off the place and got a standing ovation. “He’s one of these very unique, colourful, interesting people, and quite extroverted, but at the same time introverted. He still has an amazing talent for songwriting.” Tickets are selling fast, as excitement builds thanks to The Entertainers Club rocking and rolling out a big name for their first event since lockdown. “So many people have missed live music, it’s really awesome to have it out there and happening again,” says Nicole. July, 2020 ˜˛˜˛ life+style The Weekend Sun Ëœ°3Ë™ August, ˜˛°Ë? Cathy and Brad Taylor.

A hiker’s life Adventures with the Taylor family Life is an adventure best spent outside for Cathy and Brad Taylor. The couple own Walking Legends, a multiday hike guiding business that tour seven of the North Island’s most magical spots – from the Coromandel’s breath-taking pinnacles, to New Zealand Great Walk, the Tongariro Crossing. Despite offering about 100 trips over six months of every year and working for, partnering with, and now owning Walking Legends for more than a decade, Cathy and Brad’s love for the outdoors hasn’t worn thin. In fact, family holidays during the off season are usually spent hiking with their daughters Annabelle, 10 and Jolie 8. “We come home from our holidays completely knackered,â€? says Cathy. “We’re deďŹ nitely not ‘sit by the pool and drink cocktails’ kind of people.â€? Cathy and Brad’s appreciation for fresh air and scenic views has passed on to their daughters – they enjoy any walk with a waterfall and a place to swim. Annabelle and Jolie’s ďŹ tness must be commended. Their last family holiday was spent walking around Lake Waikaremoana, which can easily turn into a 40km trek, depending on the route. “It’s good for them to get a healthy sense of where they come from and what makes New

Zealand cool. “When they inevitably head off overseas to explore more of the world, they’ll know exactly what they’ve got at home, and be proud of it.â€? Brad is Walking Legends’ main guide. For him, hiking is just as much about people as getting outdoors. “There is something about a hike that makes people really open up to you. It always amazes me the deep conversations you end up having with people,â€? says Brad. “It’s attering, because it shows they’re relaxed enough to open up to you.â€? The positive impact of being in nature isn’t something to be underestimated, says Cathy. “There’s a Japanese term that translates to ‘forest bathing’, which recognises how time outside is a release that’s good for our mental health. We can deďŹ nitely vouch for that.â€? Brad began his tourism career as a white water rafting guide, taking groups through the rapids of popular Rotorua rivers, like the Kaituna. Hiking has been his main muse for more than 12 years. Cathy may take care of the admin side of Walking Legends, but her sense of adventure is just as keen. Her favourite walk is Great Barrier Island. “I ďŹ rst went with Brad when he was designing a Walking Legends itinerary, and it just got under my skin.

“It’s good for them to get a healthy sense of where they come from and what makes New Zealand cool”

“There were trees, birds and plants there that I’d never seen on the mainland. It’s absolutely pristine. “It doesn’t take much convincing to get me there.” With Cathy being from Matamata and Brad Te Puke, it would be easy to assume the pair met in the central North Island. Somewhat unsurprisingly, they met on another kind of adventure. “We met at a summer camp in Maine in the US. We were the only people from the North Island there.” When the camp finished, Cathy and Brad travelled for three months together, covering 29,000km of North America in a trusty van, which doubled as their accommodation. The rest is history. “I think if you can live with someone in a van for three months, then you’re pretty solid,” says Cathy. Their travels made them appreciate their rural backgrounds. They’ve owned their Pongakawa lifestyle block for ten years. “We have a tiny, 83 square metre cottage on almost a hectare of land, and we love it. “It leaves heaps of space for the kids to play outside and to grow our own natives, so there’s tonnes of bird life around.” That’s not to say they didn’t try the New Zealand city life. After returning from the US, Cathy studied in Wellington and Brad in Auckland. While Brad’s audio engineering degree didn’t end up defining his career, he brings his guitar

to every hike. “At night on a tramp, you have to entertain yourself, so it’s great to have music, a deck of cards… and good New Zealand wine.” Cathy’s previous job as a draftsperson makes her appreciate her nature-filled lifestyle even more. “I worked in an office every day, sitting in front of the computer getting very little exercise compared to what I do now. “The thing I appreciate most is having the flexibility to structure my day, so I can go watch the kids’ school cross country, or go on a field trip with them. As a draftee, I had very limited opportunity to do that. “We get six months a year when things quieten down and we get to spend quality time with our girls – we are so grateful for it.” MacKenzie Dyer

The Insides Guide Living the good life gluten free When Mount Maunganui woman Elly McKenzie was diagnosed with coeliac disease 18 years ago, gluten-free food was supplied on prescription from the chemist and restaurant meals would consist of meat, salad and omelette.

Nowadays, she reckons living with glutenrelated illnesses is much easier. But that’s not to say it doesn’t come with its struggles. Elly’s consultancy business ‘The Insides Guide’ was born out of frustration for the lack of support that’s out there for people with coeliac disease and other gluten-related conditions. “Just how challenging it can be to live truly gluten-free is something most people don’t understand,” she says. The mother of three also had to learn how to take care of children with non-coeliac gluten sensitivities, which she says brings a whole other level of challenges. Coeliac disease is an autoimmune condition with symptoms triggered when gluten is ingested. It is thought to affect more than one in 70 Kiwis. The common protein found in wheat, rye and barley can also negatively impact those with

other food sensitivities. As a qualified food scientist, Elly says her business is for those wanting access to “true insider knowledge” that complements the work of doctors and dieticians. She was diagnosed with coeliac disease just after she graduated from the University of Otago with a bachelor’s degree majoring in Consumer Food Science. Despite the shock diagnosis, Elly says she managed the condition well with knowledge gained at university. It got a whole lot harder for Elly when her first daughter, who has non-coeliac food intolerances, became unwell as a young child. They spent a large chunk of time seeking answers from specialists trying to get to the bottom of the problem. “It became much more complicated than when I wasn’t just dealing with myself. My daughter was colicky, cried often and had sleepless nights - she just started getting sicker and sicker. “When she was about six I thought she had coeliac disease, but then the blood test came back negative. “We went down this road of seeing lots of specialists, talking to lots of professionals but not getting anywhere. It was awful, confusing and stressful trying to figure out what to do.

“I wanted there to be a place where people with coeliac disease can come to learn about the practical aspects of their condition and be supported to stay well”

Through this trying journey, Elly came to realise how difficult it also was for people with food intolerances trying to navigate their health journey. “I just had a sick child, and it felt like everybody was telling me she was fine. It took a long time of piecing together a lot of information to get to the place where we are at today. “I just became aware of how little support there is for people with food intolerances. What happens when you don’t quite fit in the box? “I just wanted there to be a person that someone can talk to about their family, or themselves to get tips, tricks, practical support as well as facts.” The hardest part of living with coeliac disease is the “anxiety and stress” caused by eating out, says Elly. “It’s incredibly difficult socially because so many of our interactions are based around food and it isn’t that easy to trust food that others are preparing for you because you don’t know how much knowledge they have.” Elly says eating out as a person living with coeliac disease was easier 18 years ago, because the condition was taken more seriously by restaurants. “There were fewer options - eating out was a case of plain meat, salad omelette. Ironically, it used to get taken more seriously because no one

had heard of coeliac disease. “Back then it wasn’t a fad and people weren’t doing it for non-medical reasons. Now if I go out it looks like I have got heaps of options, but many of them aren’t safe for people with coeliac disease.” Elly says it only takes a speck of ingested gluten to trigger the immune response that damages the small intestine in people with coeliac disease – as little as a crumb of bread. Cross-contamination in cafés, restaurants and at home can be a big problem for people living with coeliac disease. After the long-winded journey, Elly says her family is now living a healthy gluten-free lifestyle, and only a few minutes’ walk from the beach. “It has all just become second nature. Once you know what to do, the confusion and stress is removed.” And removing confusion and stress is the key reason the Gluten Sensitivity and Coeliac Consultant started her business. “I wanted there to be a place where people with coeliac disease can come to learn about the practical aspects of their condition and be supported to stay well. “Too few are being taught how to identify gluten on food labels, for example, and that’s absolutely critical to the management and longterm outcomes of the disease.”
