Facial preservation Give your face a retreat this winter It’s time to think about you, to do something that will make you feel more confident and put an added bounce to your step.
Photos: Tracy Hardy
Although it’s a privilege to age, some of the less desirable effects of facial ageing prevent us from looking as well as we feel. Whether it’s a few frown lines glaring back at you in the mirror, or sad, downturned corners of your mouth, Sharon Melrose from her clinic Rejuvenation Cosmetic Medicine, offers an honest, down-to-earth appraisal and safe, time-proven cosmetic medicine treatments to refresh or maintain your looks. “Each person has particular facial characteristics that distinguish them from millions of other people,” says Sharon, “their personal ‘logo’. “Clients generally want to maintain that uniqueness for as long as is reasonable. Most of my clients are reluctant to accept not so much the inevitability of ageing, but the speed with which their face changes.” Cosmetic medicine falls somewhere between the relatively short term benefits of beauty therapy treatments and the more invasive, permanent plastic surgical procedures. Cosmetic medicine treatments are designed to accommodate and complement an ever-changing and ageing face. The aim is to look refreshed and revitalised. Sharon Melrose is a registered nurse with more than 20 years in the field of cosmetic medicine. Sharon specialises in treatments using dermal fillers and facial muscle relaxants. Either one, or both procedures work in harmony to re-freshen faces in a natural-looking way. “There is an increasing demand for these popular treatments by clients with a quest to look and feel their best,” says Sharon. An established and experienced cosmetic medicine practitioner is more likely to offer continuity of care and a higher level of skill, resulting in better outcomes, less complications and more realistic and natural-looking results. Tailor-made treatments using the best possible products are fine-tuned to each person with safety and comfort in mind. “Having ‘an eye’ for knowing what is going to suit or enhance each client is where experience counts,” says Sharon. “Trends that place emphasis on particular facial features are always changing and the ‘trend of the moment’ may not necessarily suit everybody or look flattering at every age.” Sharon offers a complimentary and confidential consultation to discuss what options may be suitable for each person which are realistic, achievable and within
their budget or time frame. People are quite surprised at how relatively inexpensive some of her treatments are. A treatment for frown lines costs approximately $220 and lasts around three-four months. Dermal fillers costs from as little as $599 per ml and can last up to two years. Although cost is an important factor, “good value for money is also about the quality and safety of the products used and the skill with which they are administered,” says Sharon. “Saving a dollar or two at the expense of quality and skill can be counter-productive.” Treatments are quick to administer and can be effective immediately with little or no down time. They last from around three months to two years and include re-freshening lips, softening frown lines, adding volume to sunken cheeks, minimising facial wrinkles or deep folds, firming up jaw lines and reducing ‘marionette’ lines. Photographs are taken prior to treatments and a complimentary follow-up appointment booked for a later date. Taking a sense of pride in our appearance and keeping a healthy balance between looking and feeling good is just one of a number of many things that we can do to improve our confidence and self-esteem at any age.

Selling sauerkraut Looking to pass on a family business Jim Pringle’s fermented foods business was born out of a desire to improve the health of New Zealanders.
Photos: John Borren
It’s not often a married couple in their 80s start a food production business, but that is exactly what Jim and Margaret Pringle did when they opened MaKutchen Organics. The passionate pair made it their mission to distribute probiotic food across the country. MaKutchen Organics closed late last year, as 91-year-old Jim wanted to find a new owner who could help the business flourish. They produced unpasteurised, fermented vegetables commonly known as sauerkraut. “I didn’t find it tiring, but at my age I wanted somebody to take over the business so they could grow it. I am still waiting for that somebody – and we will teach them how to make it,” says Jim. But Jim and Margaret still haven’t found a willing pair of hands to take over MaKutchen Organics. He reckons reopening the business would do “so much good” for people’s health. “We have got all the equipment we used for manufacturing in storage at the moment – it’s all ready to go.” Jim decided to start the business after it initially launched in Australia by Jim’s daughter Carolyn. He saw how the product positively impacted her health and was inspired to launch the business in New Zealand.
MaKutchen Organics is still running in Australia, making sauerkraut, kombucha tea, bone broth and gut shots. When asked why he started the business in his 80s, Jim said there is too much to do in life to bother with retirement. “Trying to help people has always been part of my job and we believe in the product. “If more people in New Zealand used it, it would have a fantastic impact on their health.” Jim and Margaret, who consume their unpasteurised sauerkraut daily, are as healthy as can be. They both play tennis three times a week and spend most days tending to their abundant garden of fruit and vegetables that feeds the retirement village they live in. After eating sauerkraut for a couple of years, Jim was also taken off all pharmaceutics used to control his heart and blood pressure. “I was taking pharmaceuticals to keep me alive, but now my blood has become 100 per cent right. “Making MaKutchen a part of our diet meant the need for medication went out the window.” Loyal Tauranga MaKutchen customers still show up to Jim and Margaret’s house hoping to score some sauerkraut – the couple still produces small batches at home. But they are holding out hope MaKutchen products will be stocked in organic stores Emma Houpt soon.

Faye Suzannah Looking for a wall Faye Suzannah is looking for walls. And wall owners. The Tauranga-based mural artist, who came from the UK in November with her Kiwi partner and their two-year-old daughter, is keen to put colour onto backyard walls, buildings, garden and business walls. Soon after arriving, she found herself painting a turquoise, salmon and pink mural of leaves and ferns across a huge wall at Mount Maunganui as part of the Street Prints Mauao – International Street Art Festival. “I read there was a mural festival the following week and before I knew it, was involved with artists from around the world,” says Faye. “It was a much bigger, organised event than I had anticipated. Incredible. “It blew me away in that it was being funded and that the council and lots of people are up for supporting this in this country.” She met her partner Marcel, a landscape gardener, in London. “It was 2003 when I was at university. Then we lost track of each other for ten years, as you do when you travel across the world. “Then Facebook started. I had moved to Brighton on the south coast of England, and he popped up on Facebook saying he was also living there, so we reconnected.” They met for a beer, talking about their travelling experiences. “We weren’t even together before he invited me to go on a trip to India with him.”
The independent world traveller smiles at the recollection. “I’d always wanted a big strong man to invite me to a third world country. “I think we both expected to go our separate ways after a few weeks because we were quite used to lone travelling but it was actually just really, really great. “Having a man next to me was one of the most valuable things. I’d never appreciated male company until I was in India and I had this lovely man basically looking after me. And I allowed that to happen, I think for the first time. “When we got back to Brighton, we just moved in together and we’ve been together eight years now.” She had visited the South Island once previously, before meeting Marcel. “We don’t know if this is a strange phenomenon, but a handful of female friends from my hometown of Glastonbury have all married Kiwis. So there’s quite a lot of Kiwi and Australian connection already within my broad friendship network.” She and Marcel went to live in New South Wales a few years ago. “Well we tried to, but we didn’t last very long there. It was a bit competitive in many senses. “But during that time we took a holiday and he brought me back to New Zealand. We drove all around the North Island in his parents’ car.” They had stopped for a couple of hours, Faye thinks, at Mount Maunganui, where she “did some yoga practise on some grass by the

beach” before continuing on the North Island holiday. “That trip helped give me a good overview of the North Island, and I met his parents. So when he said: ‘let’s go and live in New Zealand’, I had a visual clue about what I was up for because I’d actually been here.” She’s always been artistic and creative, studying pattern design at university in London and Bristol. “It was on the cusp of everything turning digital. By the end of my studies, everything was happening on Adobe programmes, so I caught the end of that, as well as being mainly trained in ‘handmade’ image making. She didn’t want to be a fabric designer spending hours on a computer, and left London for Brazil and Argentina to stay with friends. “My bags got stolen in Buenos Aires. “I had to stick around waiting for my paperwork to get fixed up and was stuck in a strange campsite.” She started painting everything big around her, staying on for months. “Around that time social media was taking off and I realised that if I wanted to make any sort of career, I’d have to be consistent. So I thought: ‘that’s it, I’m going to paint murals from now on’.” Arriving back in England, she started taking on commissions from friends,
family and family friends. “I did that for quite a while. Then I travelled, meeting Marcel in the meantime, staying in hostels all over the world and painting murals. People really enjoyed it although I have never earned much money doing it!” She would like some mural projects to do in and around Papamoa, where she is living. “I’m looking for walls and wall owners and anyone interested in changing their space, their business space or private space. “I’m also looking for owners of larger walls who are interested in getting something done which could be funded. “There is funding available in this area for arts that benefit the community, murals are perfect for this but I need to have walls and support confirmed before I can go through the application processes.” Faye Suzannah has also been booked to paint a mural for the Bay of Plenty Garden & Art Festival at Tauranga Racecourse and will be live-painting and exhibiting work also at the Bloom in the Bay festival hub. Until then she will be volunteering at Imprint Gallery in the Historic Village whilst selling and making work on paper. Her work can be viewed on www.fayesuzannah.co.uk Rosalie Liddle Crawford
