Bigger and better – and back! Tauranga Home Show set to be a big event for 2020.

The Tauranga Home Show is back on October 16-18 and it’s shaping up to be a good one. After a turbulent year, this exhibition is gearing up to be one of New Zealand’s few major retail events of 2020, with more than 300 exhibitors spread over two halls at Trustpower Arena Baypark. Browse, compare and draw inspiration from a huge range of home and lifestyle businesses from top of the line to budget conscious. “We encourage you to support local businesses by visiting the show,” says Dana McCurdy, managing director of Bay Events which organises the show. “We live and work here in the Bay and we see firsthand the positive effect that the Tauranga Home Show has on business progress in the region.” Being Tauranga owned and operated means Bay Events works together with local businesses and community groups to create a special show experience.

BespOak Kitchens Mount Maunganui has designed and built the fully functional Live Cooking Theatre kitchen, specifically created for live cooking sessions while showing off their beautiful oak kitchen design. Special guest Nadia Lim will ¬be demonstrating at 2pm on both Saturday and Sunday, while local food heroes – non-profit organisations and social enterprises – will be demonstrating over the threeday show. “We’re also supporting Waipuna Hospice again this year,” says Dana. “Make sure you show your support with a friendly wave or donation!” Grab lunch at The Landing Food Truck Hub, with a range of local food trucks and plenty of seating and enter the major door prize from Destination Rotorua. The lucky winner will experience some of Rotorua’s ultimate attractions, exploring the culture and beauty of New Zealand’s coolest hotspot with a weekend away in our own backyard. Breaking away from the flock Wool – the ancient fibre of the future With rising awareness of the impact of synthetic materials and chemicals in our living spaces, proactive customers are seeking out eco-friendly alternatives, including the fibres we use to keep our homes warm and dry. Wool is a fantastic alternative to traditional fibreglass insulation as it’s a natural, sustainable and abundant resource grown right here in New Zealand. “Today more than ever, there’s a greater awareness towards proven natural products and having a healthier home,” says managing director at Woolco Insulation Ray Schroder. “We only use 100 per cent pure New Zealand wool and our installs are carried out quickly and efficiently by our experienced installers. Customers also like the fact that they’re supporting a local business!” So how does wool stack up in performance? Individual wool fibres feature hollow spaces that decrease thermal conductivity and give outstanding insulation performance. “Wool is a miracle fibre,” says Green Sheep Insulation & Home Comfort owner Richard Bennett. “It has a natural springiness that gives it loft and the ability to trap air, making it the ideal insulator. “New Zealand grows some of the best wool in the world.” For a healthier home, wool can absorb and break down indoor air pollutants - volatile organic compounds can come from gas appliances, wood

resin, paint, cleaning supplies and pesticides, as well as many other common substances around your home. A huge bonus for home safety is the fact that wool is naturally flame resistant. Its high nitrogen and water content means it requires more oxygen than is available in the air to become flammable. Wool is a long-life material that can last for hundreds of years without losing resilience or structure. Wool is one of the world’s most sustainable resources and is produced using only a fraction of the energy required to make comparable manmade material. Wool insulation is also biodegradable, only taking a few years to decompose and it can even be used as a fertiliser. “We believe the youth of today are tomorrow’s home builders, and we’re keen to educate on products that are going into these homes,” says Richard. “More and more, people are going back to basics with products like timber, wool insulation and carpets, making use of the earth’s resources over manmade synthetic products with the best intentions of living a more sustainable life.” So while wool is an ancient fibre and may seem a bit old fashioned, it’s also the fibre of the future. Visit the wool insulation exhibitors at the Tauranga Home Show and find out if wool insulation is the right choice for your home. “It’s from farm to ceiling,” says Ray. “We love to turn up to a job and tell them we’ll be chucking a few sheep up into the roof space, so don’t be surprised if you hear a ‘baa’ later on tonight - the kids just love it!”

A focus on what’s real Passionate about Nude Food New Zealand celebrity chef Nadia Lim is known for her delicious, healthy recipes and meal delivery boxes, and soon she’ll be coming to Tauranga to share her talent with the Bay of Plenty. She has always dreamed of working with food and found her big break on the silver screen after winning reality TV cooking show MasterChef in 2011. And now, Nadia will be attending the Tauranga Home Show on October 17-18 to demonstrate her skills in the kitchen. When she was 12 years old, Nadia decided she would follow in the footsteps of ‘The Naked Chef ’, Jamie Oliver – even going so far as to decide her future cooking show would be called ‘Food in the Nude’. This eventually evolved into Nadia’s current mantra: ‘Nude Food’. She is passionate about making healthy, nutritious food simple and delicious and wants to help Kiwis enjoy the benefits of raw, natural food. “I’m really enjoying working fresh produce from the garden at the moment,” she says. “Lots of broccoli, kale, silverbeet and beetroot. Our dining table is currently covered in over a hundred seedlings which I’ve planted from seed, waiting for the temperature outside to get warmer before I can transplant them. “Autumn is the most abundant season for us - we

can pretty much live off the land in autumn,” says Nadia. Nadia was – and still is – passionate about food and cooking, having published 11 different cookbooks, running a successful YouTube channel with more than 19,000 subscribers and of course her meal delivery services ‘My Food Bag’ and ‘Bargain Box’. As a cofounder of My Food Bag in 2013, Nadia helped many Kiwi household banish the thought of: ‘what’s for dinner?’ by providing a nutritious ingredients and delicious recipes to thousands of New Zealand tables. But at the centre of all she’s done, Nadia loves real food. Her ‘Nude Food’ ethos centres on showcase natural food – free of additives and packaging. She’s passionate about making nutritious food easier, tastier and healthier. “Eat real food that comes from the ground, sea and sky, and less from the factories,” she says. Nadia will be at the Tauranga Home Show at Trustpower Arena Baypark on October 17-18 at 2pm each day in the BespOak Live Cooking Theatre. For more information, visit: www.taurangahomeshow.co.nz

October, ˜˛˜˛ 2020 life+style The Weekend Sun ˜°9˙August, ˜˛°˝ The three local BOP founders of Show TV celebrating the company’s ˜°th birthday this September; Philip Blomfield, Bridget Clarke, Darryl Clarke.

Show-stopping local success It’s the biggest company of its kind in Australasia, it’s been in business for 15 years and is tucked away in the Mount.

Showtime! Team Show TV in action at the home show.

And you probably know them, even if you don’t quite realise it. Show TV is a social shopping company based in Aviation Avenue, Mount Maunganui, and it’s a Bay of Plenty Home Show stalwart, having been represented at 14 shows in 15 years as a local business. Despite getting most of its revenue at the time from events, Show TV survived Level 4 lockdown by changing things up a bit. Show TV co-founder Darryl Clarke said they faced the closure of most of their events in March, which made up about 85 per cent of revenue. “It was a pretty daunting prospect. I’d rather not go back to that again.” Show TV sells innovative, unique and useful products for around the home, in the kitchen, health and beauty and more. “All the products we sell have a story to tell – we look for products that aren’t ‘lefthanded’ – what we mean by that is we look for products that everyone can use. “We search the world for things that are

unique and innovative. We knew we had all of that right here in-stock; the next challenge was figuring out how to get it in front of people.” Plenty of companies were thinking the same thing – and many rushed to traditional television advertising to do it. Prices of TV ads went up, says Darryl, so they tried to think outside the box. “The future is really digital – we put about two years of business development in place in two weeks. We got the group together and started thinking about how we could transform the business really quickly into one that sends a traditional message through digital marketing.” Darryl went from never having heard of Zoom – like many of us – to using it on a near daily basis. “By the end of the March, we’re having our lead team meetings over Zoom, we’re meeting people over Zoom, everything was over Zoom.” Then they attacked social media – and were relatively successful. “What was cool was a lot of the videos we filmed over lockdown were filmed on our smartphones, in our backyards, our homes, with our families, using our products. “There’s a video on our Facebook page

of me cleaning our windows using products with my kids. This was just a ‘we’re already cleaning the windows, why not shoot a video at the same time?’ sort of thing and I think it ended up getting around 800,000 views. “That’s just outstanding, and it generated hundreds and hundreds of comments and engagement. “Kiwis really resonated with our ‘local friendly service’ angle that we have as a business.” One video, demonstrating their carbon infrared heater, garnered more than two million views, Darryl says, which are pretty good numbers for a domestic market. “Those sort of numbers – they’re not exactly eye-watering numbers when you throw them around internationally, but domestically that’s a lot of views and a lot of engagement.” But at the heart of the business is connecting with the customer which is easiest with face-to-face interaction and something the team is excited to get back to. “It’s been great to push the business into new ways of reaching customers, but as a business we are the largest and

most experienced company of our kind here in New Zealand in the niche field of direct marketing at consumer shows. “It’s good to get back into it.” And Darryl has glowing things to say about the Tauranga Home Show “We do 100 consumer events a year – 60 of those are here in New Zealand – and the Tauranga Home Show is the strongest regional consumer home show in New Zealand and it has been for years,” he says. “For us it’s really cool that there’s such a strong show just down the road. For the bulk of the year, our team are on the road going from town to town. We’re really looking forward to this year’s Home Show, you bet!” Show TV are responsible for highquality, innovative brands and products such as Woll Cookware, FryAir Touch Air Fryer, Little Giant Ladders and much more. They’ll have about a dozen stands dotted around the Tauranga Home Show from October 16-18 at Trustpower Baypark, so keep an eye out for them. A focus on community Building more than just homes in the Bay When you look at building or buying a home, you look for more than the finished product. You look at the community around it. What are the neighbours like? What community events and initiatives are there around you? What’s the feel of the area? Picking a builder for your new home or home renovation is a bit the same. Some builders just build homes and others work to build communities, too.

The Tauranga team are a special bunch and proudly sponsor the Special Children’s Christmas Party held at the Mystery Creek Event Centre every year. The day gives more than 1600 children a day they’ll never forget. They are children with life threatening diseases, intellectual or physical disabilities, those involved in accidents or those living in disadvantaged circumstances from the Waikato, Bay of Plenty and Rotorua. It’s a fun-filled, treat-laden, three-and-a-half hours of fun they’ll cherish forever, filled with chips, lollies, ice cream, sandwiches, fruit juices and so much more. Last year, the Classic Builders team raised $25,000 for Homes of Hope by running a fundraiser and completing 13 F45 fitness classes in one day. This year, they’ve set a more ambitious goal - they are actively involved in building a home for Homes of Hope. Their Givealittle page is aiming for $210,000 to make this happen.
