“After the disappointment of having to cancel the 2020 National Jazz Festival due to Covid-19, we are especially pleased to be hosting this 58th National Jazz Festival and 43rd National Youth Jazz Competition,” says Jeff. “Without the generous support from our sponsors, and especially Tauranga City Council and TECT, this event would not be possible.” The jazz festival is set to be another spectacular Easter occasion, showcasing some of the best of New Zealand’s jazz artists and emerging artists, particularly from secondary schools across the country. The world-famous NZ Army Band will be back, boasting top-class vocal and instrumental soloists delivering innovative performances with a distinct and spirited Kiwi flavour. This awardwinning band has played festivals around the globe, including the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo, and will entertain a local audience with 90 minutes of impressive swing, jazz, funk and pop music. The 43rd National Youth Jazz Competition is attracting 44 bands from schools across the country, providing an opportunity to soak in the incredibly talented

“We hope you enjoy the depth and variety of the concerts on o˜ er featuring the best jazz musicians in Aotearoa”

For some jazz-influenced orchestral music, a symphony of jazz on Sunday afternoon sees the BOP Symphonia make its first ever appearance at the National Jazz Festival, featuring piano soloist Soomin Kim – winner of the Bay of Plenty’s Rising Stars concerto competition in 2015. As well as the stunning performances hosted by Baycourt, the downtown area will come alive with a two-day carnival of jazz, beginning with a vintage car parade down Willow Street and continuing on with the best street party Tauranga has had since 2019. Multiple stages will stretch along The Strand, extending through Red Square and the newlyupdated Wharf Street, with its Chinese lanterns and outdoor seating. There will be jazz, swing, blues and funk, with plenty to keep the kids happy in the Family Fun Zone. Little Big Markets will join the downtown party on Easter Sunday. For some uptown jazz, head along to Hotel Armitage for Loris Zigon on keyboards and Sam Swindells on guitar on Easter Friday; and a jazz high tea with sparkling jazz singer Lady Larisa on the Saturday. The historic Kewpie will once again be sailing people back to a nostalgic past on Easter Saturday and Sunday, with gentle sunset harbour cruises - a unique Easter jazz experience. Each cruise takes two hours and is a special delight, with on-board jazz as the sun sets and the city lights sparkle across the water. On Easter Sunday, Tauranga’s own Big Band,

with band leader Joe Thomas, will be performing their favourite big band numbers at a Tea Dance at the Tauranga Citizen’s Club, while the audience enjoys a buffet meal. A favourite of many and a popular crowd pleaser is the TECT Jazz Village on Good Friday – Tauranga’s very own version of the New Orleans French Quarter. Set in the distinctive Historic Village on 17th Avenue, and starting at 11am, there will be plenty of entertainment served up in true New Orleans style. Dixie music and swing will ring out around the cobbled streets, with families able to relax in the village green while entertainment continues on the outdoor stage. Tauranga’s Big Band, Miho’s Jazz Orchestra, Rodger Fox Funkbone, the Hipstamatics and more will bring delight to everyone. Art and craft stalls, as well as food trucks, refreshments, fun rides and entertainment for the children will ensure an amazing day out. “Thank you TECT for making the National Jazz Festival a reality again this year,” adds Jeff. “The 12 years of support and over $1 million in funding has helped us grow the festival into the spectacular event it is today! “We hope you enjoy the depth and variety of the concerts on offer featuring the best jazz musicians in Aotearoa, and look forward to your support for our up-and-coming performers at the National Youth Jazz Competition at Baycourt. Enjoy the weekend and keep music alive.” Rosalie Liddle Crawford

For the love of jazz Jazz legends

A true New Zealand jazz legend will be remembered this year at the 58th National Jazz Festival in Tauranga, with Saturday and Sunday nights at the festival promising some poignant and emotional moments.

Phil Broadhurst

Julie Mason Kevin Field

Lewis McCallum

Phil Broadhurst, who passed away in April 2020 after battling cancer for almost two years, is widely acknowledged as one of the country’s leading jazz artists. A pianist, composer and educator, Phil became the first jazz musician to be awarded the MNZM for services to jazz in 2001. During his prolific career he performed in London and Paris, and enjoyed collaborations with many jazz greats, including saxophonists Ronnie Scott, Johnny Griffin and Scott Hamilton. In 2016, Phil won a NZ Music Awards Jazz Tui for the third album in his trilogy, Panacea, and in 2019 he released his fourth album Positif. The Kiwi Jazz Legends and the Auckland Jazz Orchestra will be celebrating the music of this widely respected and much loved composer and pianist on Saturday, April 3, at the Addison Theatre, Baycourt. Phil’s wife Julie Mason will lead the Kiwi Jazz Legends, performing Phil’s favourite standards. The group is made up of Kim Paterson on trumpet, Brian Smith on tenor saxophone, Frank Gibson on drums, Julie Mason on piano and vocals, and Alberto Santarelli on bass. Following this, the Auckland Jazz Orchestra

will perform a selection of Phil’s recorded works. Led by musical director Tim Atkinson, the orchestra has five saxophonists, four trumpet players, four playing trombones, as well as a guitarist, pianist, bass player and a drummer. On Sunday night, in the X Space Theatre at Baycourt, Kevin Field’s Supergroup bring the ultimate star line-up with saxophonist Nathan Haines, bass clarinetist Lewis McCallum and guitarist Keith Price – all respected bandleaders in their own right. Completing the virtuoso ensemble will be Kevin Field on piano, Cameron McArthur on bass and Steve Thomas on drums. Kevin, a composer as well as a jazz pianist, has collaborated with some of the top international names in jazz, including Grammy-nominated guitarists Mike Moreno and Nir Felder, bassists Matt Penman, Orlando le Fleming and Charles Haynes – the drummer/producer for Kanye West and Lady Gaga. He has featured on over 40 albums, is a senior lecturer in jazz studies at the University of Auckland and holds a doctorate in musical arts, awarded for research into the development of new and innovative approaches to jazz improvisation and composition. To Phil Broadhurst with Love will be performed at the Addison Theatre, Baycourt at 8pm on Saturday, April 3. Kevin Field’s Supergroup will be performing at 8pm on Sunday, April 4, at X Space Theatre, also at Baycourt. Tickets are available via Ticketek. Rosalie Liddle Crawford

Downtown Tauranga alive!

The carnival atmosphere in central Tauranga will envelope more streets than ever before, with the recently upgraded Wharf Street becoming a new and special staged area at this year’s jazz festival. The festive sparkling street, festooned with Chinese lanterns, will be a fine place to stroll around listening to jazz, swing, blues and funk while tasting tantalising dishes from many of the downtown bars and restaurants. The two-day carnival begins at 11am on Saturday, April 3, with a vintage car parade starting at Cliff Road, continuing on down Willow Street, Spring Street and Durham Street and on to the waterfront car park. Members of the public are encouraged to dress up and join the band as it makes it way downtown. An additional delight sees the vintage cars on display until 1pm. From 12–6pm, the Strand, Wharf Street and Red Square will come alive with music. A family fun zone will run from 11am–6pm, with entertainment rides for children at Masonic Park. Joining the festival on Sunday will be The Little Big Markets, with arts, crafts, food and gift stalls along the waterfront car park from 10am–2pm. The stages along the streets will come alive with jazz again on Sunday from

12–6pm, with the family fun zone again open to children at Masonic Park.. Leaving the waterfront in the late afternoon on Easter Saturday and Sunday will be the historic solid kauri Kewpie, taking passengers back to yesteryear on a scenic jazz sunset cruise across Tauranga harbour. The crew of the Kewpie will welcome aboard about 50 passengers on each of the Easter cruises for the unique, unforgettable sunset experience, where you can also enjoy a selection of drinks and snacks while being entertained by on-board jazz. With music playing, the Kewpie will head down the harbour, going under the harbour bridge and past the marina and shipping channels, giving passengers the opportunity to take in the sights of the port. Gliding along to Pilot Bay, the classic cruise boat will sail past the statue at the harbour entrance and across to Matakana Island, before returning back to The Strand. Admission to the carnival will be by gold coin entry. For children aged 14 and under, admission is free. The Jazz Sunset Cruise will depart The Strand at 4.30pm on Saturday and Sunday, April 3 and 4. Licensed drinks and snacks are an additional charge. Bookings can be made at Baycourt, or via: www.ticketek.co.nz Rosalie Liddle Crawford

Future stars of jazz National You

Jazz Competition

For more than 40 years, jazz-loving youth have descended on Tauranga from around New Zealand to compete in the National Youth Jazz Competition each Easter. It’s been a pensive few months as excitement builds for the return of this hotly-contested competition, as last year the Tauranga Jazz Society had to make the difficult decision to cancel the event due to Covid-19. They say good things come to those who wait, and maybe even better things for those who wait a bit longer. The good news is that it’s back–bigger and better than ever. The National Youth Jazz Competition will be running ahead of the Easter weekend, beginning on Wednesday, March 31, and continuing to Thursday, April 1. Young jazz stars of the future compete for prizes, awards, trophies and, of course, jazz glory. Everyone is in for a treat, as the best emerging talent from secondary schools all over New Zealand appear over the two-day competition at Baycourt as part of combos and big bands. The first Youth Band Competition was held in 1978 at the 16th Tauranga Jazz Festival, when ‘ideas man’ Jim Langabeer suggested a high school division of the big band contest. Participants that year were Wellington’s Mana College Stage Band, which won it with leader Rodger Fox, Tauranga Youth Swing Band with leader Jim Langabeer, and Dargaville High School Jazz Band, which won it in 1979.

Many of the nation’s most outstanding jazz musicians and singers, such as Hollie Smith, Jamie Oehliers, Nathan Haines and Sacha Vee, spent their early days appearing on stage at the National Youth Jazz Competition. Following the day’s competition on the Wednesday, the young musicians will head to Our Place to dine and jam. National Youth Jazz Competition Manager Liam Ryan says he is encouraged by the response from schools. “This year we have over 400 secondary school students attending from throughout New Zealand, performing in 27 combos and 17 big bands,” says Liam. “Tauranga will be bursting at the seams with young jazz performers. We can’t wait to hear them.” The excitement of bringing live music this year, after the competition was sadly cancelled last year, is exciting festival goers. In 2020, Dr Rodger Fox put on a free virtual performance workshop for all the school bands that had registered for the competition. Schools were able to submit videos of their combo or big band, with Rodger viewing and critiquing them. This year the organisers are looking forward to bringing the community together again to celebrate jazz music in a live setting. The National Youth Jazz Competition will be held at the Addison Theatre and X Space, Baycourt Community and Arts Centre, from 8.30am–5pm on Wednesday, March 31 and Thursday, April 1. Prize giving will take place at 5pm on the Thursday. For more information, visit: www.nationalyouthjazz.org.nz Rosalie Liddle Crawford

Hipstamatics

New Orleans French Quarter Dancing across a cobbled street to outdoor Dixieland jazz, with colourful bunting flying and costumes swirling; it is the New Orleans French Quarter come alive in historic Tauranga. Good Friday at the Historic Village on 17th Ave will be the place to stroll and enjoy entertainment in true New Orleans style. The village green outdoor stage will feature both smooth jazz and funky fusion, big band sounds and plenty of swing, with room to relax back on the grass or get the feet moving. The Hipstamatics’ soul-powered funk takes in the classic 1960s and 70s through to the funk fusion elements of today. Their distinctive flavour and original music has made this dynamic band a household name among the live New Zealand music community, earning them a reputation for energetic performances which are always sure to get everyone on their feet and feeling funky. Rodger Fox has been New Zealand’s most prominent jazz big band leader for more than four decades, and he’s also performed in many of the country’s leading rock and jazz-rock groups. His band, The Rodger Fox Funkbone, brings a contemporary jazz-fusion drenched in blues with all the elements of funk, jazz and rock interwoven. Truly an essential jazz festival moment worth experiencing.

New Zealand’s Quietest Heat Pumps

The TECT Jazz Village experience also includes Tauranga’s own Big Band, made up of trombones, trumpets, saxophones, percussion and vocalists and ably led by band leader Joe Thomas. These are some of the Bay of Plenty’s best jazz musicians, performing favourite big band numbers. The band will also be playing at the Tauranga Citizen’s Club on Easter Sunday. The street revelry continues with flute ninja Miho Wada and the Miho’s Jazz Orchestra, made up of creative quirky musicians bringing their live electric energy to the village. Miho’s Jazz Orchestra – MJO – has enjoyed a remarkable time since its inception in 2011. Formed as a one-off recording project to help raise funds for Miho’s home town of Christchurch after the earthquakes, the band ended up having so much fun they decided to continue and see what else they could do. Fearless and passionate, they could easily be the next generation of jazz, as US magazine Critical Jazz suggests. The TECT Jazz Village will be a family day out like no other. Stroll through art and craft stalls, enjoy the wide variety of food and refreshments and children’s fun rides and entertainment. Since 2009, TECT has made the National Jazz Festival possible with over $1 million in funding. “We simply would not be here without them,” says president of Tauranga Jazz Society, Jeff Baker. “Thank you TECT for helping
