Papamoa: Paradise found! A holiday in your own backyard ‘I’m so lucky to live in paradise’ is something I’ve found myself saying increasingly during the past six months since I, like most of Auckland’s population, made the shift back to Tauranga from the big smoke.

The morning began with a leisurely, traffic-free drive across town from home to the Papamoa Domain, where the Little Big Markets was in full swing. Despite being a howling gale, that didn’t stop the jovial local stallholders from greeting you with a smile and the crowds turned out in droves to pick up their fresh produce, a new necklace to match their dress or a bite to eat from one of the many food vendors. Although a slightly smaller set-up than their Mount markets, there were about 50 stalls showcasing all kinds of wares. In the spirit of market-going, I picked up a gold-imitation arrow ring at a bargain $10, and was tempted by many more shiny items. But considering the time, I was more tempted to swing by the various food carts, particularly Tia’s Tacos, whose sweet smells of grilled cheese and spiced meats filled the air. Enchiladas for me please! What better way to while away an afternoon, than under the trees in the spring sunshine? The great thing about Papamoa is the accessibility of so many great activities in the area, whether you’re a young couple like my partner and I, a family or

But every now and then, you need a weekend by the beach to remind yourself that, yes, this truly is the best place in the country to live (if you love the beach). It’s easy to forget how big Tauranga and the surrounding territories are, and just how much we have to offer on our own doorstep. Currently residing in Whakamarama, Papamoa is a good 40 minutes’ drive, the equivalent of a trip to Rotorua (and, in this beach bunny’s opinion, the better choice). Any excuse for a holiday will do, and on this occasion I chose ‘work-related stress’ to justify a weekend away in Papamoa with my significant other – a chance to unwind, relax and take in the sights in a part of town that many get to call their backyard.

Beach Resort. Formerly Papamoa Beach Top 10 Holiday Resort, the newly rebranded and extensively upgraded family business (which celebrates its 50th year in 2016) caters for every budget and occasion. With their new conference room, The Deck, you can even tie the knot there. We were treated to a luxury Beachfront Spa Villa, a glorious retreat that’s as close to the water’s edge as you can get without setting up camp in the sands. Sliding doors open up to your own private deck, with views of the sea and the sound of the ocean echoing through the room. It was pure bliss, and despite the spring breeze cooling the air, wine and cheese on the deck, followed by a stroll along the beach, was the best way to unwind on a Saturday night. Sunday morning was equally leisurely, as we hired two bright yellow cruisers (Buttercup and Daisy) for a casual cycle around the Stormwater Trails that line the reserves around Papamoa. At 30 minutes return one way, on flat track, the trail is by no means strenuous and it was good to see many residents out and about utilising the reserves – many of them walking their pooches! There’s a misconception that weekends away need to be spent gallivanting around the country, traipsing everything, including the kitchen sink, for a two-day getaway. But with beautiful white beaches, local fare and entertainment on our backdoor step, why go anywhere else? Laura Weaser

with visiting relatives from out of town. From shopping sprees at Fashion Island, to minigolf and paintball further afield at Baypark, the fitness conscious are also catered for, with the option of popping into a local gym or tackling the nearby Mount. One popular attraction, one I was excited to try, was blokarts. Blokart Heaven, situation on Parton Road, has turned the land into a race course, where you can zip around at speed (wind dependant) in one of these Kiwi-engineered land yachts. Now, I’d seen that episode of ‘The Bachelor NZ’, the one where the contestant gets flung from the cart in a gust of wind, and I have to admit I could see myself heading southward also. Never fear! The safety briefing is pretty clear that if in doubt of tipping, let go of the rope. Plus, you’re nicely cocooned into your steel frame and canvas pod that if you do take a tumble, you’re well covered from any tarseal scraps. It was 30 minutes of pure adrenalin, racing around the course, trying not to get swept up in the wind and navigating corners without hitting fellow land sailors. Easy to control, providing plenty of fun, the blokarts are best suited for everyone from stag dos to family outings (there’s even a cute side car kart for parents and children under the required age limit of eight years). Little markets’ big move This summer, Historic Victoria Park Markets will play host to The Little Big Markets Special. Definition: better, greater, or otherwise different from what is usual. It’s Rachelle Duffy’s word for her creation, The Little Big Markets. “What we’ve created is a special place that the local community can call their own, a place to hang out and catch up with friends while sampling, admiring and enjoying some of the best artisan food and craft.” Her creation is distinctive because its essence is in bringing communities together, it gives back to the community and it’s hosted by a loved-up husband and wife team, Rachelle and Chris. What’s more special is that it’s expanding. Launched in 2009, the Mount Maunganui-based artisan markets will now sprinkle its specialness all over Auckland. This summer, Historic Victoria Park Markets will play host to The Little Big Markets and will feature 50 pop-up crafts, fashion and food vendors and live music every Saturday from November 7. “Many of our Auckland-based stall-holders have wanted growth within the Auckland market but wanted to remain under our event brand,” says Rachelle. “It’s always been our long-term goal to replicate what we’ve done in the Bay and take our event model nationwide. “We don’t have a plan to take over the world,” she laughs. “It’s more that our business model is along the line of franchising. That’s something that’s on our radar but probably not for a couple of years.” It’s about quality, not quantity. So how will they juggle two events, separated by about 200km? For the first month, Rachelle and Chris will base themselves in the big smoke. Once the month’s up, they’ve employed a staff member to run the Auckland

market each Saturday. They’ve hired a new operations manager in Tauranga, who will take care of bookings. “The expansion isn’t going to take away from what we’re doing in Tauranga. If anything it’s going to make us stronger. It’s going to open up our brand, which is representing Tauranga on a larger scale.” What originally started as a hobby in 2009, The Little Big Markets has become a full-time job for Rachelle and Chris, who joined the team full-time earlier this year. Some wives would cringe at the idea of working with their hubbys. Not Rachelle – she wouldn’t have it any other way. “We met 16 years ago working together in a surf shop. We’ve worked with each other before and understand each other’s ways and adapt to each other quite well. “I can’t imagine myself working with anyone else. It’s a positive thing otherwise we probably wouldn’t have survived the seven years we’ve been running this and you’d see that coming out in the event. “He’s my best friend and my husband and it just means we can be really honest with each other. He can understand what kind of day you’ve had as well.” They’re different, so it works, says Rachelle. “We’re both very creative people, but Chris can easily work quite quietly and comfortably on his own, whereas I need noise and I’m talkative. A crush for CrossFit

“I honestly do it because I love it”

The fitness trend that’s taking off It’s the king of all workouts. Your speed, stamina, power and agility are tested in one extreme gym session that includes swimming, running, gymnastics and weightlifting one day – and walking on your hands and feet, and flipping tyres the next. “Every day is different,” says self-confessed sports fanatic Kevin Manuel. The 29-year-old switched provincial rugby for CrossFit about five years ago and has never looked back. It was a decision that led him to world recognition in the sport. Kevin is the first Kiwi male to qualify for the 2015

CrossFit Games in Los Angeles in July, where he placed fourth, earning his spot as 17th best CrossFit athlete in the world. “It was a very humbling experience,” says Kevin. “It’s every CrossFit athlete’s dream to make it to the games. For me to finally get there was an incredible honour.” This is a guy who pushes himself to the absolute limit. But why? “I honestly do it because I love it,” says Kevin. “It’s the type of sport where the more you can push yourself, the better you do at it. The more it hurts, the better you do at it.” CrossFit is not only his sport, but his family’s. He does it, his wife Jade does it and his almost four-yearold Brody joins in too. Eleven-month-old Mason will probably be learning CrossFit before he learns how to walk. “My four-year-old boy actually cries when he doesn’t get to go to the gym with me, he loves it.” Kevin says the sport has taught him a lot of lessons. “I feel like it builds a lot of character within me and has improved my personality. I feel it’s made me a better business owner, husband and father.” How? “Because it teaches you patience.” It’s a sport that not only gives him abs and big biceps, but it teaches discipline. “It’s not an easy sport. You need to really knuckle down and put the work in. It shows you what you really can do. “If you’re able to push yourself to a place that’s very uncomfortable and you’re able to stay there for an extensive period of time, which is what this sport requires, everyday life doesn’t seem so hard. You handle situations a lot easier and you’re able to stay calmer and teaches you to handle pressure.”

It’s the pressure that comes from being a good father, a husband, a business owner and an athlete. Kevin juggles a full-time job as a viticulture contractor, building vineyards, which he says complements his CrossFit activities perfectly. He’s also the co-owner of Tauranga CrossFit and Mount CrossFit, alongside five-year regional athlete Luke McGruer. Luke is the only New Zealander to compete in all five Australian/Pacific CrossFit Nationals. He spent eight years in the army, four years holding different roles in the First Battalion in Linton Army Camp and four years as a physical trainer training different units and some of NZ’s best sports teams for team building and training. “During this time I was exposed to a lot of different training styles and methods but it’s not until I found CrossFit that my strength, power and overall fitness skyrocketed. “We started using CrossFit to train the army units and we noticed huge gains in their overall fitness, and a lot of injuries decreased, as they got stronger.” Bringing the idea to Tauranga five years ago, Luke says no-one knew what is was and were afraid of it. Now, there are six CrossFit gyms in Tauranga, and Luke runs two of them. So why has the fitness fad become so popular in the Bay? “Everyone here is really fitness orientated and it’s great to see,” says Luke. “It has such a great community feel and because of the kinds of classes we run, it’s hard not to be

buzzing after. “It can be addictive, but that’s great! There’s nothing wrong with being addicted to fitness. The main thing people need to understand is it’s not what you watch on YouTube. Anyone of any fitness level can join the class.” A fitness guru himself, Luke’s tips and tricks for staying on top of one’s general health and wellbeing are simple. “It’s the same no matter who you are, from the grandma carrying her groceries to the athlete playing professional sports. “Lift heavy weights, run or walk around outside and eat real food. If you do these you will keep your body fit and healthy.” From their gyms on Montgomery Rd and Newton St, they run yoga, a barbell club, Olympic powerlifting, boot camps, a commercial gym and offer nutritional advice. It’s clear these two men know what they’re talking about when it comes to building that bikini-ready body for summer – but that’s not what it’s all about, says Kevin. CrossFit begins with belief in fitness, working to an evidence-based programme. “Try it,” says Kevin, who follows the adage: ‘Don’t dis something until you’ve tried it’. “All of our coaches make sure everybody works to their own ability. Nobody should be scared of trying it, because there’s nothing to be scared about. “In no time they’ll be doing things they never thought they were capable of.” Zoe Hunter
