Country night @ Central “Country is still alive and well!” is the opinion of Pastor Tom Frew who produces Sunday Night @ Central. This monthly event has been running for ten years and is a friendly get together of people from all walks of life, Christian and non-Christian. It enjoys some of the best of local and overseas artists and gives the opportunity for artists with potential to showcase their talents before a very appreciative and receptive audience. Over the years, Sunday Night @ Central has given the opportunity for many local artists to gain stage experience and exposure, but, has also been able to present several international stars in their line-up. A good example is Margaret Keys, who recently appeared at the Royal Albert Hall in London and who is presently appearing in the United States with a very good friend of Sunday Night @ Central, Gray Bartlett. Tom, the Senior Pastor at Central Baptist Church on Cameron Road, next to Countdown, is always on the lookout for local talent and eager to give them a start on the ladder, which may lead to success on the stage. On Saturday, April 16, Sunday Night @ Central focuses on “Country”, featuring “The Kaimai Express” a Tauranga bluegrass group. The group’s fiddler is Colin Allison. As well as a country fiddler, Colin is also a most accomplished violinist with a great repertoire of styles. No country show would be complete without a good country singer and Alison Blue is just that. She has been well known in the country music scene for several years and was a Gore festival finalist. The night ends with a message to motivate, inspire and encourage from Pastor Tom Frew. The event’s resident organist is Len Hockly, who is well known in the Tauranga music fraternity. Len links the whole night together with the wonderful sound of the Yamaha organ. Entrance is free, but a freewill offering is taken up to cover some of the expenses. A night not to be missed.
