Here at RR headquarters, we often cringe at some of the mangling, bastardisation of proper English. As if the new age of communications, computers, cell phones and texting hadn’t done enough damage – we’ve now got travel agents adding to the carnage.

The latest lingo-lacerating lines come from

tourist operators and travel consultants, who have devised an entirely new language of catch phrases and spoonerisms that will have your English teachers turning in their grammar.

Here we have some abominations from one of the worst culprits – we won’t name to save embarrassment – who are trying to entice us to go glamping, flashpacking or take a mancation.

They say the travel industry is abuzz with buzz words such as babymoons, buddymoons and even a frightseeing tour – emerging as new age rivals to the humble holiday package.

While most travellers are still happy to book a “holiday” or “vacation”, numerous variations on the terms are emerging to describe particular styles of getaways.

Babymoons: Babymoons are holidays for mums and dads-to-be to take before the baby arrives. Rest, relaxation and pampering – all within easy reach of home – are normally the priorities for babymooners.

Buddymoons: On a buddymoon, you and the love of your life say “I do” and enjoy the honeymoon in the company of friends and family.

Daycations: These getaways are popular options for those who can’t afford the time or money to go away overnight or longer. In short, you stay for the day.

Waiheke Island is the perfect daycation for Aucklanders. For instance, a half day Waiheke Island wine tour. Wellingtonians could head to the Wairarapa for a gourmet wine escape and visit four Martinborough vineyards to taste the region’s award-winning wines.

Flashpacking: Forget the dormitory – flash-

Frightseeing: This involves taking part in tours or daytrips that have a darker side. Transport yourself back to the darkest moments in the capital’s history within the deep depths of the London Dungeon. Glamping: Glamping is glamorous camping.

You may stay in a tent, but the facilities are generally five-star and go way beyond what you would normally expect on a camping trip.

Mancations: Vacations specifically for men.

Key features may include sport events, fishing or adventure.

Palidays: On a paliday, you bypass hotels by staying with friends or family.

Set-jetting: Travelling to locations that were once the setting for films. The LOTR is a classic example of this locally, while in Rome, travellers experience the Angels and Demons tour, based on the book by Dan Brown.

Follow the path of the Illuminati and decode the secret messages hidden in Bernini sculptures and Galileo texts.

Staycations: The term staycation emerged during the global financial crisis, to describe a holiday at home. Popular past-times on staycations include visits to the backyard pool, the local shopping mall or a drive in the country.

Voluntourism: Volunteering is an increasingly popular holiday choice for generation Y. It basically involves giving something back by volunteering during a holiday.

For example, the panda conservation adventure is a 14 day volunteer holiday, which allows you to take in China’s amazing sights, such as the Great Wall, but also gives back to the community. Volunteer at the largest panda reserve in the world and help ensure these distinctly Chinese icons are around for future generations.

Top Bay schools revealed Some Western Bay of Plenty principals are glowing, while others are dismayed at the latest figures showing the secondary schools with the best NCEA results in 2010.

Bethlehem College was one of the best performing schools in the region for 2010.

With 92 per cent, the school came first equal with Aquinas College for the highest participation percentage of Year 11 students who passed NCEA level 1.

Of the eight secondary schools in the Western Bay, Bethlehem College topped the list for the highest Year 12 NCEA level 2 participation percentage pass rate, with 94 per cent.

With 81 per cent, the college were second equal with Tauranga Girls’ College for the percentage of participating Year 13 students who passed NCEA level 3. Aquinas College came first with 88 per cent.

Bethlehem College also topped the list for University Entrance results, with 76 per cent of its participating Year 13 students gaining UE. “Students work hard,” says Bethlehem College deputy principal and head of curriculum Stuart Manners.

“There’s good discipline and work in the classroom.”

For Year 11 NCEA level 1 results, Tauranga Boys’ College was ranked last of Western Bay secondary schools.

Of the Year 11 students at the school who sat NCEA level 1 last year, 62 per cent passed.

This is below the 75 per cent Year 11 national average in 2010, but up on the school’s 2009 Year 11 NCEA level 1 results when it had a 60 per cent pass rate.

“There are a number of things that come into that, like decile ranking. Boys traditionally do less well than girls,” says Tauranga Boys’ College principal Robert Mangan.

“We are pleased with our level two and level three results and scholarships results.”

Tauranga Boys’ College came third for University Entrance results, with 72 per cent of participating students passing, up from 52 per cent passing the year before.

About 74 per cent of participating Year 13 students at the college passed NCEA level 3 last year and 78 per cent of Year 12 students passed level 2.

Aquinas College principal Ray Scott says his students find NCEA endorsements a big motivation.

If a student gains 50 credits at excellence, their NCEA is endorsed with excellence.

Likewise, if a student gains 50 credits at Merit – or Merit and Excellence – their NCEA is endorsed with merit.

“It provides something else for those capable students to aim for,” says Ray. “It’s better to have that ability to recognise students in that way.”

Tsunami sirens an option again First e-waste facility set to open Tsunami warning sirens are once again being considered for Tauranga after councillors had a re-think following the Japan earthquake on March 11.

Sirens were rejected as part of a Tauranga tsunami warning system during a meeting in January. A decision was made on March 28 to revisit the issue and staff, councillors and civil defence have had another look at sirens and discovered their effectiveness was underestimated.

In January, sirens were listed 21 out of 29. They were ranked down because they were less likely to be heard in daytime – but the night time effectiveness was not taken into account.

“In the end there’s no question that to give the people confidence sirens are higher,” says projects and monitoring committee chairman Bill Faulkner.

“The original rating of 21 out of 29 was probably misplaced because it didn’t take into consideration the night time thing. In the original presentation, there were flaws in the rating scheme for sirens because in the middle of the day it might be held that sirens are ineffective, but in the middle of the night people will pick up their ears and wake up.”

Sirens will be included in a suite of warning systems including texting, radio and television announcements aimed to alert the 51,000 residents of the Mount and Papamoa coastal strip.

Most tsunamis that may strike the Bay of Plenty are not expected to get past the fore dune, with a tsunami big enough to get past the fore dune expected to occur every two centuries or so.

“The chances of this happening are getting pretty remote,” says Bill.

“Like we do with the storm water, we will arrive at a standard. With the storm water we have gone for a one in 50 year event.

“So we will go for a standard of event, we might go for example for a two metre high wave, a one in a 200 year event and cope with that. There is a limit to what you can do.

“Some of those odds are pretty long, but then the other side of it is there’s nothing to say a one in 50 year event doesn’t happen two weeks in a row,” says Bill.

“In the end it’s going to be a balance between cost effectiveness and likelihood – and that’s anybody’s call.”

On Monday, May 2, the Mount Maunganui Mainfreight branch opened its doors to receive electronic waste from businesses, households and schools.

The Community Recycling Network e-Cycle Facility is officially being opened by mayor Stuart Crosby next Tuesday, May 10.

Electronic waste can be dropped off at Mainfreight during business hours, Monday to Friday, 8am-5pm.

The Community Recycling Network, funded by the Ministry for the Environment, approached Mainfreight to become the new drop-off point facility.

“In the past there has not been an everyday solution for environmentally friendly e-waste recycling in the region,” says CRN’s Jon Thornhill.

“We are delighted to have Mainfreight in Mount Maunganui joining the project.

They provide a convenient, professional and safe environment for consumers and businesses to drop off their e-waste.”

Mainfreight will transport the e-waste to CRN’s recycling plant in Auckland.

“We felt this was a way we could help out and contribute,” says Alan.

E-waste is the fastest growing type of waste in the world, estimated by CRN at 80,000 tonnes per year in New Zealand and is more toxic than normal household rubbish.

“We have to step in where we can. You only get one crack at it, so we have to play our part, especially with the development in the electronic age,” says Alan.

“We have to do something with all the old gear.”

Opening your eyes and freeing your mind is something that singer and songwriter Annette Smither stresses in her music, as well as in her own life.

The name of the band and the album are not coincidental, but are used to conjure images for escape.

“We were tossing up lots of different ideas and it (LockDown) stuck. It sounded kind of strong in contrast to the album. The idea is about opening your eyes through the music, which brought together the name ‘Released’ for the debut album, due out later this year.”

LockDown is currently going through a “restructure”, replacing a drummer and adding a lead guitarist to bring a richer, more dynamic sound for live gigs.

“The main focus is on the album at the moment. We just want to get out there and do more live shows, more gigs and get some radio time,” says Annette.

LockDown formed last year after Annette and two others played a gig at the Polytechnic. Since then, the band has played numerous high profile gigs, including playing after Shihad at Brewer’s Bar and opening for I Am Giant in Whakatane.

LockDown’s most recent gig has

been a fundraiser in Hamilton during the ITM 400 weekend for Cars and Bikes for Canterbury, The Good Kind of Rumble show and has been approached to do further gigs through the car clubs who were a part of the show.

Aside from the band LockDown, Annette is also working with fellow students and other artists in Tauranga, utilising the recording studio at the Bay of Plenty Polytechnic as a hub for Tauranga original music. They have put together a CD called ‘Stand Tall Miss Canterbury’ as a fundraiser for the Red Cross Emergency Fund. Look them up on Facebook, search LockDown TGA.

Murphy’s Law is at work again “Well, this shouldn’t take long?”

With only four agenda items it may have been a reasonable expectation until you knew that the first item concerned – a tree.

Trees are almost guaranteed to get most elected members going and this was no different. This tree is the Norfolk Pine near the end of 22nd Avenue at Gate Pa. Immediate neighbours petitioned council for its removal citing health, safety, property damage issues and interference with phone and power lines. Fifty-six minutes later on a vote of 6-5 the tree was gone. Residents will contribute 50 per cent of cost of removal.

I guess there’s a message in there somewhere.

But wait – there’s more. At this meeting a donation of trees citywide for ‘Project Umbrella’ tree planting by Dr Paul Salmon attracted the opposition of 30 residents occupying 15 properties on Valley Road, Mount Maunganui.

It is proposed to plant 90 donated Pohutukawa trees along Valley Road, Ranch Road and Bain Street this year. Dr Salmon’s tree planting programme has been running for about 10 years and is designed to provide extra shading around the city. Dr Salmon is a specialist dermatologic surgeon and in an accompanying letter he noted that the trees were not for the exclusive benefit of residents, but for everyone’s benefit.

A further 49 minutes of debate followed and this time the trees won on a vote of 7-4.

Another petition concerned inappropriate use of Waipuna Park and Johnson Reserve by motorbikes, golf and intimidation of residents. This was received and referred to clubs and event organisers in about 30 seconds. Chairman David’s initial comment certainly invoked Murphy’s Law and/or the Peter Principle.

Building on the established

A proposal from the Elders Centre Establishment Group to develop a dedicated centre for the aging population, dating from November 2009 and requesting exclusive use of the Greerton Hall along with $275,000 to refit the hall was reported back by the establishment group. In a breath of fresh air, the group decided the focus should be on more effective communication of existing support/services available to elderly people and build on capabilities of existing organisations. Council could facilitate with favourable terms of existing council facilities. A most sensible decision and is one other organisations should consider.

Who’s in charge?

More attacks on local government/ ratepayers from the government with a proposal for ‘A National Policy Statement on Indigenous Biodiversity’.

A soothing preamble designed to lull councils into a false sense of security followed by eight ‘policies’ laced with ‘will’, ‘must’ and ‘shall’.

It’s all about caring for native flora and fauna. Scary stuff and Mayor Stuart Crosby waxed lyrical on its ‘over regulation’. Costs fall on local government (what’s new?) and everyone would be bound by it – except (of course) the Crown.

Stuart says it was “nonsense” and no-one disagreed.

I often wonder who’s running New Zealand as the same kind of strangulation legislation seems to emanate from either a left wing or right wing government, but the same bureaucracy. Maybe the Sir Humphreys should change as governments do?

Determining the warning

At projects and monitoring committee there was a lengthy detailed presentation from council staff on the vexed issue of tsunami warnings. The previous presentation was from Civil Defence. There was a presentation from I-Text Ltd at the beginning.

This system would text each cellphone in the area with a tsunami warning.

Cost for Bay of Plenty would be $250,000 a year. Apparently normal text service is only 10 texts per second, but this can be lifted to 1500 per second by the service provider. Locally, Mayor Island is the risk and if it exploded there would be no effective warning. From Japan or South America there would be 12 hours warning.

A landslide collapse or volcanic explosion in the Kermadec Trench would be a two hour time frame before a tsunami arrived here. A one or two metre tsunami wouldn’t require evacuation, but above that it would. There are 51,000 people to move off the coastal strip. As a measure it took two hours to clear 17,000 people from Baypark Stadium after the Super 15 rugby match. Sirens were discussed at length. When would you sound a siren? It takes between an hour and one and a half hours for the Tsunami Warning Centre to analyse the data after an event and issue the warning. Texts require the phone to be switched on. In house ‘Meerkat’ alarms (similar to smoke alarms) require you to be home to hear them. TV and radio are great provided you aren’t asleep. You could also wait for the next day’s Bay Times to alert you! In recent weeks people overseas ring New Zealand friends and relatives in the dead of night once it’s on the news networks.

Risk management

Then there’s the level of risk versus cost issue. What level of risk do we accept? Like stormwater, where we have a service level of coping with a one-in-50-year event. Of course nature doesn’t know about this and there is nothing stopping two one-in-50year events in one month. It’s just a level of measure. Maybe we could accept the risk just like we do when we get in our cars.

There is the risk of living, being struck by lightning or meteorite. Council will be considering an issues and options paper shortly where all contingencies will be outlined.

Evacuation plans, details and realities will be involved. A friend who has lived at Papamoa for 20 years told me he and his wife were quite happy and lived with the risk. As he said – when your time is up, that’s it. In the event of a tsunami he intended to get in his motorhome and hope it floated! A pragmatic solution if ever there was one.

Magical worlds popular More teenagers may be reading about vampires than dragons and magic, but Tauranga author Sherryl Jordan has proved old fashioned magic is still a hit with the juniors.

Sherryl is a finalist in the 2011 New Zealand Post Children’s Book Awards for her book ‘Finnigan and the Pirates’. She is up against authors Elizabeth Pulford, Diana Menefy, Anna Gowne and Jack Lasenby.

Having been a successful and award-winning author for many years – both here and internationally – Sherryl’s main market used to be young adult fiction when she began writing in the 1980s. Four years ago, her

attention shifted to children’s literature when her grandson came to live with her.

“With my grandson living with me, it meant I began focusing on younger children and it has been a lot of fun.”

She says there has definitely been a shift in young adult’s interest in fantasy, with the birth of the ‘Twilight’ craze and says her previous work “just wouldn’t cut it” nowadays.

“My work is in general, fantasy about dragons, medieval and magic and now there has been a shift into things of the paranormal and metaphysical.”

But fantasy is proving a hit with the children and the ‘junior adults’, with Sherryl’s new book ‘The Last Summoner’ due to be released this month.

in her work, saying the hours around her grandson mean a children’s book is better suited to her lifestyle.

“When I was writing for young adults, I was writing undisturbed during the night and sleeping during the day, but at the moment I am working on school hours. It wouldn’t be practical.”

Despite her beginnings with illustrating with Joy Cowley in the 1980s, this is also the first book Sherryl has illustrated as well.

“In the 1980s, I gave that (illustrating) up and the writing really took over. For me, when I write, I always see it like a movie; so it made sense to draw and write. I really enjoyed ‘Finnigan’ with the old gallons, pirates, old sailing ships and the concepts of dance.”

Bethlehem College Primary School students are waiting in eager anticipation for the opening of their new playground. They have had to make do with a small sandpit with times rostered on for using it.

“We have 486 Year 1 to 6 students and now they will have three big sandpits with boulders, a big tree with a tree hut, a slide and shrubs; which will involve the children in creative and imaginative play,” says Maureen Giles, Head of the Primary School.

The playground has been designed by local archi-

tect company Insight Architecture, who are more used to designing houses and buildings.

This is the first stage of a much bigger playground.

The cost of the playground was met by the school PTA who have numerous fund raising events throughout the year.

“I cannot speak highly enough of our PTA, they work really hard organising gala days etcetera and we now have a beautiful new playground for the children,” says Maureen.

The students do not have much longer to wait to try it out as it is being opened by Bethlehem College Principal Eion Crosbie on Wednesday, May 11 at 2pm.

Greerton Red Cross is joining countries around the world in honouring those who donate their lives to help the lives of others.

World Red Cross Day is on May 8, celebrating the 80th anniversary of the Red Cross and 152 years since the founding of the Red Cross.

There are 186 countries around the world that have a Red Cross service and are holding their own unique birthday celebrations.

In celebration, the Red Cross in Greerton is holding a display of memorabilia as donated from members of the public. The memorabilia includes many uniforms, certificates, photos and

publications from over the years.

The Greerton centre is also holding a movie screening for Red Cross volunteers on May 10, along with free birthday cake. The movie focuses on Henry Dunant, winner of the first Nobel Peace prize and founder of the Red Cross. The film looks at willpower of an individual to improve the living conditions of all others.

The Red Cross is the largest humanitarian organisation in the world and continues to improve the lives of vulnerable people.

As well as internationally, the impact of Red Cross can be felt at home. The Tauranga service provides Meals on Wheels, First Aid training, People Saver courses, Breakfasts in Schools, as well as providing hospital transport, mobility aids and disaster response.

A MayDay call for funding assistance From front cover

Tauranga Coastguard is marking the annual national fund raising appeal with an open day at the Sulphur Point boat ramps on Sunday, May 8.

The theme of the national fundraising appeal, which runs until May 15, is ‘Train one, save many’.

It costs $34.30 per week to give a coastguard volunteer practical training, both in the water and the air, to ensure they can respond to each call for help with speed and accuracy and help fulfil the charity’s mission to save lives at sea.

So far this year, Tauranga coastguard volunteers have been called out more than 140 times going to the rescue of some 320 people.

Twenty one of the call outs had police involvement, says Tauranga Coastguard operations manager Simon Barker.

Tauranga radio operators have handled more than 26,000 calls, which is down on previous years.

“We aim to raise funds to ensure our volunteers receive the very best practical training so we are prepared for the next time you ask for help,” says Simon.

“And to ensure coastguard can continue to do what we do – saving lives at sea.”

This is the first year the coastguard has had a national MayDay appeal and Coastguard NZ is calling on New Zealanders for help.

From 10am till 2pm on Sunday at the Sulphur Point boat ramps there is a flare display, a sausage sizzle and the coastguard boats Tect Rescue and Rescue Two are on display for people to inspect.

Tauranga Petanque club throw third “I think it was the power of positive thinking and a lot more practice that took our petanque club to third position at the national club championships,” says Brenda Reid Tauranga BOP Petanque Club captain.

The club had entered in previous years and was up against other clubs from around New Zealand and the two top clubs had international players in their teams.

The national championships were held in Rotorua during Easter. There were six players in a team and on the first day they played triples, coming third,

followed by doubles on the second day retaining their third place. They were beaten to the two top spots by St George and Herne Bay clubs, both from Auckland.

Petanque is always played outside, usually on a gravel or stony surface. It originated in France a century ago and is played with hand-sized steel balls called ‘boules’. It has now become a popular sport around the world and can be played by anyone.

“We have about 40 members with six or eight that play in national competitions,” says Brenda.

“It is a mentally challenging game that doesn’t require any great fitness and can be played by people who have a disability.”

The club is holding a triples competition on May 8 at The Terrain, Cliff Road in Tauranga starting at 12.45pm.

Spectators are welcome and the club is always looking for new members.

It’s time to honour our local volunteers The search is on for Tauranga and Western Bay of Plenty’s hard working volunteer groups, with nominations open for the TrustPower Community Awards.

The TrustPower Community Awards have been celebrating regions’ volunteers since 1994 and they acknowledge volunteers in a range of categories from health and wellbeing to sports and leisure.

TrustPower community relations representative Suzi Luff says volunteers dedicate thousands of hours to the community.

“Volunteers fundraise, they build and preserve things and they host events. They coordinate health support groups, they run theatre groups and they teach children new skills and sports.

“It takes five minutes to nominate a voluntary group, but it will make a real difference to the volunteers you are recognising,” says Suzi.

give through this year’s Bay of Plenty awards.

The supreme winner of the TrustPower Tauranga and Western Bay of Plenty Community Awards will represent the districts at the National Community Awards in Ashburton next March.

Exploring the history of Turkey One of the benefits of being in the travel industry is to do exactly that…travel.

Having just returned from the amazing continent of Turkey, Kay Rogers from United Travel shares her journey, starting in Instanbul, her itinerary took in Cappadocia, Antalya, Kas, Fethiye, Ephesus, Pamukkale, Izmir, Troy and last, but by no means least – Gallipoli.

Fascinating city

For anyone who is keen on their history, or who have already ticked Turkey off their bucket list, lots of these places are familiar. Surrounded by three big seas; the Black Sea, the Aegean Sea and the Mediterranean, one is never far from water in Turkey. Istanbul is normally the start and end place for most tours – and what a fascinating city.

There is so much to see and soak in. An exotic city where east meets west and straddling the Bosphorus strait, joining two seas. The “call to prayer” from the mosques becoming a haunting melody that becomes familiar. The city is so old – a visit into the caverns of the

Basilica Cisterns under the city, which were filled with water to replenish the splendid Ottomam palaces and alike is only one surprise.

Historical glory

The four tonne chandelier in the Summer Palace where Ata Turk (the father of Turkey died in his bed there,

not that long ago) is kept in pristine condition and wistfully looks out over the busy seafront waiting for life to bring it alive and whisk it back to its former glory. The Palace is still used on formal occasions and along with the Blue Mosque, Topkapi Palace and the Aya Sofya, is a must-see. Istanbul could be mentioned as an electric mix of fun, culture and great historical significance. Make sure to have at least three or four full days in this city.

My itinerary took me inland to Capadoccia from Istanbul. A spectacular lunar like landscape formed millions of years ago by massive volcanoes, something I have never seen before in all my travels. It was quite cold during the time I was there, so this made the landscape even more surreal. Needless

Another must-see highlight was Pamukkale. It reminded me of what the Pink and White Terraces in Rotorua must have looked like. Hanging onto a hillside and vulnerable to the elements as time goes on, these gorgeous shell-shaped pink coloured creations are sensational. You can sit or wade through these warm tingling mineral waters and feel the

To experience what our troops had to face on this Turkish beach and then onto Turkish soil. To see the well manicured and immaculately presented lawn cemeteries and the Cenotaph and the stories each one would have to tell.

This is a fascinating country awash in history. One of the great civilisations and a travel destination which caters for people from all walks of life. Mothering Sunday origins In Christianity, Mothering Sunday is the fourth Sunday of Lent and is the day when children give flowers and homemade cards to their mothers.

It is often called Mothers’ Day, but has no connection with the celebration of the same name.

In former times it was a day when children, mainly daughters who worked as domestic servants, were given a day off to visit their mother and family. On the way home they

would pick wild flowers such as violets to give to their mother.

Centuries ago, it was traditional for people to return to their home or “mother” church at least once a year. This took place in the middle of Lent.

The return to the church became a time for family reunions when children, who often from the age of ten years, were working away

from home.

Historians think this was the beginning of the term Mothering Sunday and latterly Mothers’ Day. Mothering Sunday was also known as Refreshment Sunday, as the fasting during Lent was relaxed for that day. Simnel Cake is associated with the day; a cake with a layer of almond paste on the top and in the middle and

also sugar violets, with 11 balls of marzipan icing on the top, representing the 11 disciples, Judas is not included.

A legend goes that a man named Simon and his wife Nell disagreed about whether the cake should be boiled or baked – so they did both. They decided the cake should be named after both of them; Sim-Nel. By Helen Wilson

What mothers’ day means to others Mothers’ Day is celebrated in different ways in every country.

It can be a time of remembering mother figures such as stepmothers, mothers-in-law, foster parent or a family friend.

Traditionally, mothers are given cards, flowers, cakes and presents. Chocolate, jewellery, clothes, accessories, hobby equipment or tools are some suggested presents.

It can be a time of family gatherings or visits, which can include family breakfasts, brunches, lunches and dinners – either prepared at home or at mum’s favourite cafe.

Children who live a long way from home often take the time to make a long distance phone call or chat over the internet.

A poem or message just for mum adds a personal touch or even a day at the movies or theatre.

Carnations are popular Mothers’ Day presents in China and some groups in Samoa organise elaborate song and dance performances throughout the country to celebrate the contributions mothers make to Samoan society.

Night of the Proms returns

Every two years since 1999, Tauranga Concert Orchestra, as it was known then, now Bay of Plenty Symphonia, has performed the Proms in May at Baycourt.

Since that time, audiences have been treated to an enormous variety of orchestral music, extremely talented guest soloists and conductors, harmonious voices from the Proms chorus, wit, fun and at times, cavorting and showing off from the popular MCs. In the second half, cajoled by the MCs, audiences have always raised the roof of Baycourt with their lusty renditions of the compulsory

Proms songs, including “Land of Hope and Glory”, accompanied by ‘Britannia’ in all her gowned glory.

This year, guest soloist and ‘Britannia’ is local songstress and entertainer, Sharon Cotter from Te Puke.

For the first time, the Proms chorus is a secondary school choir – ‘Animoso’.

Animoso was founded in 2009

by Roger Stevenson and since that time he has worked tirelessly to develop the 33 voices into a wonderful sound.

Animoso has received numerous awards in the three years since its inception and was the only New Zealand choir at the 2010 Australian International Music Festival.

Mothers’ Day tips for blokes Guys, you know that sinking feeling when you suddenly realise that you’ve forgotten your partner’s birthday? Remember all you had to do to make up for it?

Well, I can’t help you avoid missing her birthday – diary the date now – but, you still have a chance to avoid forgetting Mothers’ Day. Here are five simple steps to save your neck and earn some brownie points on Mothers’ Day this Sunday.

1. Cancel any blokes activities planned for this Sunday.

2. While you have your diary out, tone down any plans to overindulge on Saturday night – she is the one getting the Sunday lie-in.

3. Presents. This is the big one. Get this

right and your day will be a breeze – get it wrong and you are in for some grief. The issue here is she will probably believe the kind of present you get says a lot about your relationship. What does she like? That’s always a good start.

Nowadays, it is accepted that most women return to the workforce once they have had their children.

There are now good quality day centres available where children are safe and there are early childhood education programmes in place. Many employers realise the benefits of retaining valuable staff and can be accommodating with working hours or even the option

of working from home.

Skills such as tolerance, patience and communication learnt from rearing children can often be applied to the workplace.

Working keeps social networks open for women and the chance to interact with adults after the demands of small offspring.

Children of working mothers learn quickly that everything is not done for them and often take on more responsibility and grow up to be independent and achievement orientated.

Working mothers do have difficult days, especially if a child is sick, but in the long run usually find working to be beneficial to everyone.

Caring for hearts on Mothers’ Day Women are four times more likely to die from heart disease as breast cancer and most women do not realise the risk.

“It’s important for women to take time out and care for themselves to keep healthy and strong for their families,” says Sandy Ritchie, Bay of Plenty heart health advocate.

To coincide with Mothers’ Day on Sunday, Jennian Homes from Whakatane is launching an inaugural fun run to promote women’s health.

It has been inspired by the Heart Foundation ‘Go Red for Women’

campaign and is a five km fun run or walk, starting at Heads Reserve, Whakatane – going over the bridge and back along Warren Cole walk-

way, finishing back at the starting point.

All registered participants need to be at Heads Reserve by 9am ready for the start at 9.30am. Registration is $20. It is suitable for women of all ages and fitness levels.

There is the chance for all women to win some great spot prizes.

Families are welcome to come and support their mums and spend some time celebrating the accomplishments of women on Mothers’ Day. Jennian Homes is a national supporter of the Heart Foundation and this event has been sponsored by the Whakatane management.

The Mothers’ Day pledge How do we really honour mums on Mothers’ Day? Retailers will tell you it’s about buying them something nice and what mum wouldn’t appreciate a thoughtful gift, but it doesn’t need to be the big screen TV though.

The biggest smiles I have seen on Mothers’ Day morning are normally for the handmade card or the quirky gift with the lovely meaning behind it. One of my daughters at four insisted on buying a set of truly ugly porcelain horses, a mare and foal because; it was “just like me and mommy and how she looks after me”. And I recall a tear in mum’s eye, which may have also been from realising they would live on the window sill in the kitchen for the foresee-

able future, after the gift’s meaning was explained. So the truth of it is, it’s the thought that counts.

At Mile High Karate we reinforce it’s the doing that proves what we say. So this year for Mothers’ Day, we are asking all our students to sign and swear a Mothers’ Day pledge.

The Kids Konnect programme on May 11 and 12 has 50 children from five schools – Omanu, Welcome Bay, St Mary’s, Te Akau Ki Papamoa and Mount Maunganui Primary – participating in a two day ICT learning experience.

Omanu School is hosting five workshops aimed at developing the student’s technology skills such as Photoshop, digital story telling and creating a stop-motion animation piece.

The children who attend the workshops take these skills back to their school. It is one way of students and teachers connecting to other learners in different schools and is an effective way of sharing skills with each other.

Welcome Bay teacher Kay McKinlay says students for the programme were selected by the school as they need a certain ability to problem solve and work independently.

“The outcome of the workshops will be different for each workshop, but each group will have to produce something, for example, I take an animation workshop and students need to put together a one minute animation clip at the end of it. It is about different ways of working with ICT.” The Kids Konnect is an extension of a three year programme the five schools had previously run together called ICT Professional Development. Kay says the Kids Konnect programme is about sustaining the work they had done with technology through this programme. She says last year had been “a real success” and this time they were attempting to do it by themselves.

Tips for feeding independence Each child has their own unique ways of doing things, in their own time; and feeding independently is no different. The important thing to remember is there is no specific age that they need to be accomplished at feeding, so it is not useful to compare your child to anyone else’s.

Letting them learn at their own pace will often result in baby making the switch to self feeding before they are even capable of getting enough food that way. The ‘feeding relationship’ or the interaction and communication that take place whilst baby is feeding influence their ability to progress. As long as you are responsive to babies feeding cues and attentive to their needs, they will learn to have a positive relationship with food and feeding.

Babies should never be forced to consume additional food when they are indicating by closed mouths or turning away their heads that they are full. When feeding cues are ignored or overruled they may become confused about the sensation of hunger and fullness. This confusion about hunger and fullness cues has been linked to childhood obesity.

Food should be offered in a positive way without forcing or enticing baby to eat and their diets should be full of good nutrients from all of the food groups. Babies and infants are biologically capable of regulating their food intake to meet their need for growth, but they have such small tummies

that it is best to avoid empty calories by filling them up with over-processed foods. Positive feeding environments which are patient, relaxed and calm will often decrease any ‘fussiness’. The type of foods will vary as will the amount eaten each day as they transition to feeding independence.

Great Tips

Often by nine to 12 months, baby may be possibly eating some baby foods and eating table foods with the family. At this age, many babies: • may eat with their fingers • may reach for a spoon to start spoon feeding themselves, but may need help • may drink from a cup that is held or may begin to hold a cup • may reach for the foods that you are eating or want to eat from your plate Tips for assisting this transition can include: Offering them a variety of nutritious foods daily, giving them the choice of what they

want. Then, no matter what they choose, you still know they will get the nutrition they need.

Safety comes first

Cutting foods small and choosing things that are easy to pick up, whilst ensuring that they can actually chew and swallow them.

Stay far away from foods that can cause choking, like whole grapes and popcorn. Always supervise them when they are eating – it takes a split second to choke.

Not letting them roam around and snack.

Have them seated for all meals and snacks. If your baby starts grabbing for the spoon, let them try. Get ready to clean up a mess, but it’s the best way to have them learn. There are a lot of great baby spoons available that assist them to eventually get the food in their mouths.

Above all have fun, make a meal an enjoyable process and have a good stain remover handy.

Put your skates on to keep fit Women wanting to have fun while getting fit can try roller derby at Mount Action Centre with the Mount Militia Derby Crew.

Ronnie Diamond says the sport is enjoying a revival in the Bay of Plenty and the club is looking for recruits.

“It’s lots of fun and is a great sport for anyone who wants to get fit,” says Ronnie.

“We are looking for anyone over the age of 18 who wants to come along – and there is no upper age.”

There is an open day recruit session at Mount Action Centre, Triton Avenue from 12pm Sunday, May 8.

Ronnie, who goes by the derby name ‘Crash Candy Boot’, says when she got involved she was just going to help behind the scenes – but the excitement soon had her out skating.

“When I saw how much fun it was I wanted to get out on the rink.

“I absolutely love it. It gets your energy going when you get out there.”

The club, which formed last year, puts a major emphasis on safety. All players must pass a skills test before taking part in a competitive game.

Roller skates can be hired for $2 a session. Those wanting to skate at the open day need to bring a helmet.

There is a venue hire fee of $3 each.

Going for gold The Bay of Plenty recipient of a Gold Heart scholarship is making good on his grant and has his eyes set on the gold.

Mark Wilson, 15, was awarded $5000 to achieve his goal in table tennis. Named the Most Promising Table Tennis Player in the Paralympics Tournament, he is now heading to Darwin to compete in the Arafura Games on May 7.

Mark’s mum Shirley Wilson says Mark has been enduring some “very full on training. He was doing eight to 13 hours week training around his school work”.

Mark’s coach John Tuki has been his personal coach since August. Shirley says Mark is lucky as John is travelling to Darwin with him as the team coach.

The Arafura Games are a week long, multi-sport competition, held every two years in Darwin. They target developing athletes across the Asia Pacific region and beyond. This year, the games consist of 20 sports and for the third time, incorporate the Oceania Paralympic Championships.

Mark is the only table tennis player in New Zealand with a class six disability. The class system places athletes between six to 10, depending on how able-

Shirley says this is an exciting opportunity for Mark to compete against competitors from around Oceania, giving him the opportunity to rank himself amongst other athletes in his class.

The team of 12 athletes are part of 2300 competitors, seven of those competing in table tennis. The athletes range between Mark, who is the youngest and a 72-year-old. Staying in self-contained apartments, this will be Mark’s first time staying away from his parents.

“Glenn and I are going over there the weekend when the games begin, but Mark is going on his own with the team so that will be interesting.”

Papamoa boy Zane Gibbs enjoys a good game of soccer.

Zane participates in several sports and has just finished his second season playing junior tennis at the Papamoa Tennis Club.

He came fourth in the eight years and under championships. He plays flipper ball for his school, Papamoa Primary, and is an accomplished swimmer. He has been having swimming lessons from the age of two and at this year’s championships, finished second in backstroke and fourth in the freestyle event.

He lives by the beach with his parents Vanessa and Rodney Gibbs and has started surfing this summer.

In winter, he plays in the eighth grade soccer team for Papamoa Football Club.

For the last couple of years, the debate has been brewing as to whether we need a double structure, (district and city councils as well as regional councils) in local government.

With the introduction of the Super City (Auckland City Council) we now have a situation where 50 per cent of New Zealand is governed at a local government level by a single structure (unitary

councils). Is it now time to cut the bureaucracy and expand this structure New Zealand wide?

In the Western Bay, we have been discussing this informally, but there doesn’t appear to have been any serious SWOT analysis (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and

threats) of this proposition.

This is no simple proposition, as we not only have to consider the effectiveness of the various roles of local government under the unitary model (gamekeeper versus poacher), but any change would also address the age-old issue of council amalgamation and where these boundaries should be.

Commissions – are they bad?

New regulations coming into force soon will require some advisers to disclose what commission they may receive. So are commissions that bad?

To cover the first point...Authorised Financial Advisers (AFAs) are required to disclose commissions received, however, recent changes to the regulations mean that Registered Financial Advisers (RFAs) are not required to disclose commissions. This seems to be one of the main reasons why many insurance advisers are taking the RFA option rather than the more onerous AFA option. There are some advisers who have ‘extra special commission deals’ with certain companies, in exchange for placing a high (sometimes all) of their business with them. Going

forward, these deals will need to be disclosed to you as a client, which I believe is a good thing.

So are commissions all that bad?

My personal belief is that commissions on investment products are not good and I prefer the fee only option. For life insurance products, commission seems to be the most viable option for consumers at the moment. Plan helping young people into jobs The government is investing $55.2 million to get young people into jobs, says social development and employment minister Paula Bennett.

The investment over four years is to see more young people employed with work and training subsidies through Limited Service Volunteers.

The Youth Employment Package has three components: Skills for Growth, Job Ops with Training and

the Limited Service Volunteer programme.

Skills for Growth provides a subsidy for employers to employ and train young people in high demand industries, for example aged care, horticulture and agriculture.

About 1000 youths a year can benefit from a good job and industry-specific qualifications through Skills for Growth, costing $17.2 million over four years.

Employers get a $5000 subsidy for training and in-work support to help the young person achieve a recognised industry qualification to NZQF Level Two.

Installation the key to a good heat pump

Ensuring a heat pump unit is installed correctly is crucial to maximising heat output and ensuring a smooth running machine.

Shane Snowden from Shane Snowden Electrical says the position of the outdoor and indoor unit is important, preferring to set units around the back of the home to make for a better looking product.

Exterior units need about one metre by 500mm of space on an exterior wall and interior units need at least a 900mm long space, away from drapes and curtains.

Shane says some light maintenance is always important on the outdoor unit to ensure everything runs smoothly all year around. “Owners just need to keep it

clean, make sure no weeds or plants are growing inside it. I always say there is no harm in owners hosing it off or putting car polish on it. We do offer an extra service for owners that live in salty areas to have a seal coating on the inside to stop it from rusting with salty air.”

Heat pumps also need to be installed above ground.

Shane says often heat pumps are installed directly on ground, but he ensures that they are seated on concrete with setting blocks to ensure a 70mm gap for air to circulate.

He says now is the time to get in, before a heat pump shortage takes over.

“With 3000 heat pumps heading to Christchurch, there will most likely be a shortage this winter. Heat pumps take at least two weeks to install, so now is the time to keep out of the cold.”

Delicious additions to any meal It was great to see Bel Mondo has my all-time favourite yoghurt in store; Clevedon Valley Buffalo Yoghurt, which is truly to die for.

Add in my other current addiction, Heilala vanilla and this product is an absolute winner.

The yoghurt is made using milk from buffalos farmed in New Zealand.

This yoghurt can be used in so many ways, but I have to confess; my favourite is straight into the bowl with Heilala Vanilla syrup drizzled over the top, perfect for those moments when you

just need a wicked indulgence. Good news though, this yoghurt contains acidophilus, is naturally thick, high in calcium and low in cholesterol.

I was also impressed at the excellent range of mustards, one in particular stood out; an Edmond Fallot mustard, a brand established in 1840. This mustard, with its base of blackcurrant and white wine, made a perfect base for a crust for my venison back-strap.

I simply mixed fresh breadcrumbs, a good quality olive oil (available at Bel Mondo), and the mustard. Press into the venison and roast, slice thinly and serve with steamed seasonal vegetables and roasted potatoes.

Perfect match for duck season Riesling has taken a high priority on my wine favourites list, particularly off-dry style Rieslings.

The Margrain 2008 Riesling is a lovely wine. A floral scented, tautly structured wine, showing classic Riesling characteristics.

Riesling does not seem to be that popular in New Zealand, but I love it. This Riesling has an attractive green and gold hue, aromas of fresh orange marmalade with a little spicy pear skin added in. A nice gravelly minerality, with a little manuka honey added in.

A lovely fresh, very moreish wine; the few grams of residual sugars – 11 per litre – are hard to spot. Enjoy now or cellar through to 2014 or beyond. With duck season starting on Saturday, it would be a good time to whip up a rich duck liver terrine, spread on crusty bread and topped with flat leafed parsley. Sharing the Samoan ways Living in Harmony nights may have taken a break last month, but the event is back into full swing with a Samoan evening.

The Samoan evening is part of the Living in Harmony nights, which feature different cultures and ethnicities on a monthly basis as part of the Multicultural Council.

The next evening takes place on May 12, at 7pm at the Historic Village. Events in the night include the sharing of customs, food, song and dance as well as a presentation exploring how people live and the way of life in Samoa.

Danny Tolovae from the Samoan Community says one of the highlights will be a showcase of Kava.

Kava is a root based plant used to make a drink by pounding sundried kava root into a fine powder, straining and mixing it with cold water.

Big G comes to town

The famous aerosol artist “Mr G” paid me a visit at my kennel on The Strand last week, and brought along his new family addition, Honey.

All I can say is the photographer was lucky I stayed still long enough for this picture to be taken, as Honey and I were terrorising the newsroom and generally causing mayhem throughout the building.

It was great to see the big fella, as he is just back from the Big Apple, where he has been doing his canine portraits for rich and famous movie stars.

Which brings me to ask the question, how come the boss man has one of the late “Big D” on his wall? Must be the famous and infamous, as I know he is not a movie star, as some of the videos I have seen him in will attest to; they would not make a screening on the wall of the back shed. All I can really say is Mr G is pretty cool and is doing very nicely thank you with his dog portraits.

I know for a fact that he is good, as I spend some quite time sitting under the portrait of Diesel, wondering when he is coming back.

Now onto other things such as water fowl shooting.

The season kicks off this weekend and as you know I have been in serious training for the big day, by eating and sleeping, with the occasional swim thrown in.

So it was with utmost trepidation, when I was bundled into the “Satisfaction”. The lads have named their lean mean gunship, after privateer Captain Morgan’s sturdy vessel that sailed the Caribbean many moons ago.

I am only surmising that it has nothing to do with the name of a certain rum, although once aboard, my delicate nose did detect a small whiff of the distilled amber product derived from the sugar cane industry.

Anyway, into the bilges I was placed and out into the fast approaching darkness we headed. Supposedly, we were off to check up on the shooting stand.

Well after evading sand bars, swans and man-eating mangroves, the boys reached a momentous decision: That we were not going to make it before the dark of night set in. So, the “Satisfaction” made a very cool three-point turn in the channel and we headed back to dry land.

I was relieved, as I don’t know if this boating lark is all its cracked up to be.

If the jolly water is going to be this cold Saturday morning, well they better not have holes in their gumboots, as it will be them wading out to reach fallen prey – not me. As you know, I do not like to get my hairstyle spoilt or go out in the rain. Us pointers are there for just that: to look and point, not partake of boisterous water sports.

All you intrepid hunters and collectors out there have fun and be careful. And last, but not least, make sure you keep your best four-pawed mates dry and watered. A little tot in the water bowl does not go amiss, as I can tell you from a training day I had with Diesel, who had a knack of nudging the hipflask.

Beef salad

With crunchy noodles Ingredients • 600g beef strips (or 600g rump or sirloin steak, sliced thinly before cooking) • 2 Tbsp vegetable oil • 2 carrots, peeled and cut into fine strips (5cm long) • 2 Lebanese cucumbers, halved, deseeded and cut into fine strips (5cm long) • 125g snow peas, topped and cut into fine strips • 225g packet crispy noodles • Juice of 2 limes • 3 Tbsp sweet chilli sauce • Extra 2 Tbsp vegetable oil • 2 cups loosely packed coriander leaves Method Coat beef strips with the oil. Preheat a large frying pan or BBQ hot place until moderately hot. Cook the beef in 2 batches. Set aside whilst making the salad.

Combine the strips of carrot, cucumber and snow peas with the noodles.

Mix together the lime juice, sweet chilli sauce and extra oil and toss through the salad.

Add the warm beef strips to the salad and noodles. Add the coriander leaves and toss to combine.

Fit and unhealthy Last week we looked at helping overweight people improve their overall health while they start the process of losing weight.

This week, we look at those at the opposite end of the spectrum; to those who are usually slimmer and often very fit. We assume that because someone can run a marathon they must be healthy.

Indeed, it is possible to be very fit and very unhealthy.

The typical person who contacts me is someone who has maintained a high level of fitness and physical performance, to find they have developed unexpected health problems.

On a minor scale these are persistent joint or muscle problems to more serious problems such as the sudden development of autoimmune and other fatigue-based syndromes where it appears their body has crashed. A common story is a very fit person who comes down with a bad flu and never recovers.

Warm weather delaying flu jabs Doctors are encouraging at-risk patients to get the free flu vaccine soon.

All medical centres contacted by The Weekend Sun say the vaccinations had been steady with a similar pick-up to the last few years, but stressed patients were protected earlier the sooner they had it.

Te Puke Medical Centre practice nurse Sue Corney says the warmer weather had

delayed some uptake, but encouraged people to have their jabs as soon as they could.

“It takes a few weeks to give you full protection, so it’s better to do it now than waiting until all the bugs are around.

“It’s going to last all season.”

ME/CFS affects the immune, endocrine and neurological systems, causing a range of symptoms, including post-exertion fatigue, muscle and joint pain, cognitive difficulties, disturbed sleep, digestive problems, sore throat and swollen glands.

Overseas research indicates that ME/CFS affects 2.5 to four people per 1000, making it likely that there are up to 20,000 people with ME/CFS in New Zealand.

There is currently no diagnostic test and no cure for ME/CFS and this makes diagnosis and treatment of the condition by clinicians a complex and uncertain process.

ME/CFS International Awareness Day is on May 12, as part of ME/CFS Awareness Week, May 8-14. The day chosen is significant as it is the birth date of Florence Nightingale, who suffered from a debilitating illness, now believed to have been ME/ CFS, for many years before her death.

The group, known as the Brainwave Singers, formed in October last year.

They are performing next Tuesday, May 10 at the Citizen’s Club, to raise money for the Christchurch earthquake appeal.

“The choir is proving very successful, with the membership now standing at 36,” says founder and choir leader, Bay of Plenty District Health Board speech and language therapist Robin Matthews.

Robin says the sense of community and group spirit which has been generated by the choir members has been wonderful and he is extremely proud to be part of it.

“The singers have been absolutely fantastic and it has been so exciting hearing them get better and better week on week.” Their performance next Tuesday starts at 1.30pm, with a collection and a raffle for the Christchurch appeal.

Council ‘hounded me mercilessly’ over RMA, building compliance Perry Harlen letter 21 April: This is an amazing revelation. The Mayor/the then Councillors/and the Directors of the CCO should be held accountable and pay the price or go to prison.

I had a horrendous experience with TCC from 2009 and 2010.

They took me to Court and hounded me mercilessly with the threat of $200,000 fines x 2 =$400,000 or have four years imprisonment for noncompliance with the Resource Management Act and the Building Code. Their Lawyers (CLM) told me and I quote “people have to realise that Council is serious about compliance and you are being made an example of ” . They would not wait until I recovered from serious cancer surgery, even tho they had letters from my Doctor and Surgeon, they just ruthlessly attacked. They demanded I plead guilty and “they would reduce

the number of charges... but I will have to agree to pay the legal bill of approx $14,000.”

I refused of course. I lost the sale of my property because Council Officers told a prospective purchaser that quote.. “ We are suing for in excess of $400,000...and he will lose the property”.

When I wrote a letter to all the Councillors only three replied and only one actually helped. Since my terrible experience I have learned of two other people having had similar vicious attacks against them by TCC. If the Baypark story is true then those responsible should suffer the terrible stress of what they dish out to others and be treated as criminals.

They won’t of course; because they will slide out of it.... Such is our corrupted system.

Naughty Baypark I read with much concern the letters of: Stevenson 15-April, editors note, Harlen 22-April and Begley, City Partner Manager 29-April.

Ratepayers elected Councillors to represent us, only us. They should be accountable to ratepayers and that includes Building Act 2004 compliance.

It is ultimately there responsibility irrespective how many staff are employed.

It is of great concern that a public venue (owned by TCC since Sept-2007) has not been compliant with the Building Act. TCC have the building files, consent applications and issue the Compliance certificates yet this ‘little’ divergence from the law has been known at TCC for many years, nothing has been done about it, why? So then TCC has: - building files, consents and issues the Code of Compliance Certificates (CCC) meanwhile all remained totally incomplete and potentially unsafe since 2001 until now, who has allowed this to happen?

The Governance/Proven Leadership must have been aware of this for a long time yet done nothing!. It is blatantly obvious that from 2001 to date that all have failed to comply with the Building Act 2004 on a proper and timely basis. Messrs Begley has merely confirmed the same on 29 April, when where the fines paid and by who?

Dangerous drivers My wife drove to Auckland and at 6.30 on Sunday morning got a ticket for going 7k’s over the limit; not a car in sight for ages but there he was lurking with his camera.

To all NZ drivers. If you want to drive at 80Ks an hour I commend you but puleeeeazze when you come to a passing don’t speed up to over 100 k’s an hour and so make it impossible for those who want to drive at a constant 100Ks to pass you.

It is not personal when I want to pass you, nor is it a act of deep hatred for you nor a testicular operation to remove your manhood. If you want to drive at 80ks then do so but stay at that speed on passing lanes or longer straights, you are among the most dangerous drivers on the road.

They do however seem to be getting well away from the original Jazz Society event, as originally envisaged by the enthusiasts, with a new commercialism and seeking out big-name, expensive artists who are not necessarily better, sometimes quite the reverse. What’s to stop Tauranga from using more of the home-grown local talent?

Who picks up the Jazz Festival losses?

have any exposure to what will in all probability be substantial losses this year? Who ultimately controls the Jazz Festival and who are those people accountable to? The Jazz Festival was to some extent far more accessible and enjoyable several years ago when it didn’t purport to be something it can’t realistically aspire to. Instead, it seems to have become an all-out excuse for liquor consumption and nosh-ups while ‘listening’ to the Jazz music is incidental, or at least that seems to be the case on The Strand and at the Historic Village.

Surely the music should be the main attraction, not the sideshow?

Councillor speaks out on pay rises I have been questioned a few times as to why Councillors have had a rise in pay.

Well I just want to make things, hopefully a little clearer.

The Government Remuneration Authority determines the remuneration packages to all Local bodies, and no Local body plays any part in determining the amount they receive. We don’t call the shots.

This is then divided between the Councillors.

This term the remuneration was an increase of 0.8%, why ? BUT the Remuneration Authority has governed that all travel expenses will have a threshold on them.

In other words, no claims, by any Councillor, less than 30km per day.

This equates to at least a reduction of approx 2 to 3%. It’s just like normal Government decisions… give a little… and take a bit more.

In the long run it is a little better, not worse for the Ratepayers.

Independent staff audit There has been some debate of late around a staff audit at City hall, this was “promised” by many a candidate.

This is essential to ensure that what services Council provides is provided efficiently and economically. In end result that the money is well spent and for the intended purpose.

Over many years Council has contracted out many services as that was intended to be a more efficient way to delivery the service required. However the contracting out may or may not be in the best interest of Ratepayers. Even with all of this happening over many years staff numbers continue to grow rapidly as clearly shown by the increase in the wages cost from $19m to $36m in about five years.

One can easily see from that about why rates have increased so much and for so little of essential nature having been achieved, many luxuries have been rolled out such as Baypark Arena, Arataki Hall and some $3m on the failed Mt Pools massage rooms addition, there are many more also.

Even as a Councillor it was very difficult to get a straight answer on a simple question, perhaps the only answer is that a Commissioner is appointed by the minister of Local Government.

Sport events shambles Kate and life with The Grey Men “The shouting and the tumult dies; the captains and the kings depart.”

Yes indeed a memorable occasion, superbly stage managed and presented. It can be truly said that if you viewed it on television you had the best seat in the house.

I wondered, as I watched the happy couple plighting their troth, if Kate could sense the muffled footsteps of The Grey Men (the name coined by that tragic, lonely and ill used lady, Princess Di, when describing some of the nameless “servants” who undid her) or the soft click of the latch, as the door to the normal world quietly closed behind her and the gilded portal of a world awash with many who are venerated, loved and respected because of who, and not what, they are, beckoned. There is little doubt that Kate will continue to try to be herself and one can only wish her and her’s all the best.

I read with utter disbelief the motel and accommodation people’s plight over the clash of events to be held in Tauranga on 6/8 January 2012, namely the Tauranga Half-Ironman and the North Island Children’s Colgate Athletics Games.

Mayor Crosby has tried to gloss over it as if it is nothing but it should never have happened. A simple enquiry could have revealed the problems that would arise.

Tauranga has available to it the likes of Priority One, Sports BOP, Tauranga Chamber of Commerce, Tourism BOP and TCC also has a designated events co-ordinator but it seems not one of them bothered to check the numbers involved.

We all know the Tauranga HalfIronman is a huge event in itself but the Colgate Games with 3000 children participating and 3,000 parents involved totalling 6,000 is probably even bigger.

One event would struggle with accommodation that weekend, but two events is a nightmare and unworkable.

In addition, Mount Maunganui is a major New Year holiday destination and the Mount camping grounds are still full with holiday makers at that time.

The North Island Colgate Games are normally held early in January as is the Half Ironman. Surely one event with some planning could have been changed by a week probably the Colgate Games put back to 14 January 2012 without too much fuss.

This type of mess is as usual a complete indictment of TCC and Tauranga sporting bodies more so because there seems to have been no attempt to sort the problem out and reorganise things.

To say they will bus athletes in from the Waikato or Rotorua is not the answer.

It just shows Tauranga has no idea how to organise anything.

Upon reading the article I remarked to my daughter that it doesn’t surprise me that a Tauranga person had taken out the prize. “How do you mean?” she asked. I told her that I had only lived in 2 different cities during my life, but I definitely notice the way people ‘dress to impress’ in this city, that you would never catch them out in their pj’s or slippers unlike in other cities, but they wear their Sunday Best, everyday! A stroll through the city means showing off my new outfit or classy pair of heels, or, check out what I picked up on-sale at Supre’ or Pagani! Yes it’s definitely a fashion parade out there - no need to watch NZ’s Top Model, all you have to do is look outside.

Tuning in to the Bay’s best Okay. The cruelest month has passed, which means we’re into May and New Zealand Music Month.

With that in mind I will endeavor to spend the time writing about New Zealand music.

So nothing new there really.

I still vaguely question the whole concept on NZMM. I can’t help but wonder whether the glut of albums that people save to proudly release in May doesn’t actually result in artists getting less, rather than more, publicity. And, let’s face it, when you release an album you need publicity there and then.

It’s pretty much the only chance to let people know that the album exists unless you are lucky enough to get sustained airplay. When it’s released, it’s new and hot, six months down the track it’s just one of the 2000 Kiwi albums released each year.

So this week we have a review of Dave Roy’s latest CD, just in time as it happens since the prolific artist/songwriter is already back at

the Boatshed Studio recording a follow-up.

Since I had a bit of input during the making of this, guest reviewer Ken Usmar will do the honours.

Before that I wanted to give you a head’s up about a very exciting project about to come to fruition coutesy of the Bay’s top indie radio station, the Mount’s 88.1 Kiss-FM. During May, Kiss-FM will be releasing a compilation album featuring music from Bay of Plenty (and a few Waikato) musicians.

It’s called ‘Kiss-Picks’ and station owner Max Christoffersen describes it as “a music collection that’s been 25 years in the making.”

In keeping with the times, it’s not a CD but a flash drive in the shape of a Gibson Les Paul guitar, containing 14 tracks as MP3 and WAV files, with liner notes, album covers and a crossfade mix so the songs sound as they would on Kiss-FM. Built around ‘Tip Toe through the Tulips’, it is given a cowboy jazz feel with an enchanting pairing of Derrin Richards’ banjo and Robbie Laven’s fiddle.

‘Red or White’ is about drinking. I love the roll call of wines complete with tasting notes such as: ‘And there’s heaps of truly appalling stuff only fit for washing feet’ – great stuff.

And ‘Born A Gun’ has Dave imagining himself as a firearm. He speculates he could be any make, calibre, or gauge but his lyric reminds you guns are dangerous and they kill. A truly cool idea on a very enjoyable CD.

Dir: Lisa Cholodenko. Starring: Annette Bening, Julianne Moore, Mark Ruffalo This was the ‘little film that could’ at this year’s Oscars and, having missed it at cinemas, I was intrigued to see whether it was the real bizzo or just a cause celebre for fashionable Hollywood liberals.

However, things are clearly on the right track from the start as the film introduces its central family with great efficiency, setting up the characters and relationships with quick deft strokes. What is initially jarring is how openly In Red Hill ( ) Aussie actor Ryan Kwanten (Sookie’s less than bright brother in True Blood) returns home, specifically to be a police constable in the titular rural town, only to find on his first day that Red Hill is under siege from an escaped murderer bent on settling old scores by extracting bloody revenge. And, as the body count rises dark secrets are revealed. Not new territory to be sure, but this tight tough modern day western has a fine eye for detail, convincing performances and enough originality to hold its own. Though ultimately predictable it tells its story well.

Second sequels are often iffy propositions and Little Fockers ( ) proves no exception.

It’s also a film that is bulletproof to reviews: if you liked the previous ones you’ll probably watch this whatever I say, if only out of curiosity. But you’ll probably regret it. This is rotten, desperate stuff, shoehorning in

flawed everyone is, not the fact that in a vaguely groundbreaking way the parents are a lesbian couple (groundbreaking only in that the presentation is so matter of fact).

Complications arrive when the daughter turns 18 and she and her brother contact their sperm donor, unreconstructed male Mark Ruffalo, who rather throws a spanner in the works. It is probably his character that veers closest to cliché, but Ruffalo’s pitch-perfect performance easily

sells it. Bening and Moore are equally fantastic, giving their relationship an absolutely convincing lived-in feel. The kids, Mia Wasikowska and Josh Hutcherson, are also – as the title suggests – definitely all right, all the characters complex and fully-formed.

If a warm-hearted unflinching human drama with a beautifully-written screenplay and great cast sounds your thing, don’t hesitate.

Classy stuff

Glory ( ) is Broadcast News, where the underlying focus was the pull between ‘serious’ news and populist presentation. But this is a much fluffier affair. Rachel McAdams is

above the ‘hilarity’ of the film’s title, proving there’s only so long you can milk a cat.

The clear reference point for Morning

the keen new producer of a failing morning TV show. Through dubious plot mechanisms she tries to resuscitate it by hiring respected

serious old (and virtually unemployed) hard news anchor Harrison Ford, thus upsetting current host Diane Keaton. And hilarity, if only in sporadic bursts, occurs. Ford is a terrific grump and he sparkles in exchanges with Keaton, while McAdams is simply radiant, perky and likeable enough to forgive the obvious clichés and manipulations.

Salvage () is a solid low-budget English effort set in a working-class Liverpool estate where terrified residents find themselves at the centre of a military quarantine. A serial killer on the loose? Al Qaeda? Something to do with a mysterious container washed up on the beach? Or are the authorities the real threat?

Similar in theme to George Romero’s The Crazies, there is little here aside from the location that is new, but the tension is palpable and the film short enough not to cause frustration from its obviously limited resources.

British TV comedy hit comes to Tauranga A Tauranga theatre company is seeking to reproduce Britain’s most popular television shows – and have the television script to do it with.

The Detour Theatre has acquired television scripts for three episodes of the original series of Fawlty Towers and is putting on a theatre production of the TV show from May 25 until June 11.

Director Devon Williamson says he had been keen to produce the show for sometime and jumped at the chance when it became available.

“The script that the English agents made available for us is the very same script as the television series, not an adaptation for the stage. This makes for a lot of fun on stage with actors rushing in and out of scenes that would normally be achieved with the television camera cutting to a new scene.”

Devon says this is one of the “most energetic performances I have seen on the stage” due to the nature of the slapstick television work.

This is the first time a theatre production of Fawlty Towers has been performed in Tauranga. The three episodes Detour is performing are ‘A Touch of Class’, ‘The Builders’ and ‘The Hotel Inspectors’.

The cast features Stuart Gunn playing Basil Fawlty and looking very much the part.

Devon says Stuart played the role professionally in Auckland for many years and brings a phenomenal understanding and depth of experience to the role of Basil.

His wife, Sybil, is played by Lisa Thorne – an actress Devon says Detour has been trying “to get on our stage for a while”.

“We have a first class local cast and I couldn’t be happier with the actors we have.

Their performances are already hilarious and we’ve plenty of rehearsal time up our sleeves.

It is going to be a real stand out show. There is a lot of buzz about the show and audience interest is already huge.”

Refresher for older drivers to return Tauranga Age Concern’s popular driver refresher course resumes soon. The courses are designed to update drivers on any changes to road rules, with emphasis on roundabouts and intersections.

There is also a strong element of defensive driving in both urban and rural situations and recognising hazards of both weather and human origin.

The courses run from 9.30am to 1.30pm and cover issues like driving after taking medication, eyesight, the pedestrian perspective and life after driving, says coordinator Jim Wilson.

Following talks, the participants are presented with a number of road scenarios and questioned on the appropriate response.

“There is no passing or failing,” says Jim. “The courses are meant to keep drivers up to date and aware of issues and responsibilities.

“In some cases they may help people confront the difficult decision of whether to continue driving or not.

We prefer individuals to make that decision for themselves, rather than have somebody force

Judging from the comments received after last year’s course the non-threatening approach, the update of roundabout rules and advice on coping with changing road conditions in winter, has given previous participants the confidence to continue driving.

Rebuild programme support The Habitat for Humanity national office has confirmed its agreement with all relevant Christchurch authorities, including city council, the mayor’s office, Ministries of Health and Social Development, Red Cross, Salvation Army, that it will participate in the Christchurch re-building programme.

Habitat will concentrate its efforts on rebuilding or repairing homes for the disabled and the most needy, as identified by Red Cross and other relief agencies working on the ground.

Habitat for Humanity Tauranga is

supporting the national Habitat programme for Christchurch by staging a charity concert in conjunction with Voice for Life Bay of Plenty Charitable Trust. The latter Tauranga based organisation has successfully run a national songwriting contest for three years which has attracted 115 entries from around New Zealand. The concert will feature a selection of the best songs from the three finals nights, presented on screen as a pre-recorded event.

The concert is free, but a collection will be taken up for The Habitat for Humanity Christchurch Earthquake Appeal. The concert is at St Mary’s Catholic Church at 7.30pm Saturday, May 7.

A truck driver is lucky to have escaped unscathed from the cab of the truck and trailer unit he was driving over the Kaimais on State Highway 29 when it burst into flames.

The fire destroyed the cab of the logging truck on Thursday with the truck left to burn on the road, blocking one of the three lanes for hours. The fire destroyed the tyres of the truck making it difficult to move as it could not be simply put in tow, instead it had to be hoisted up and onto another truck.

Video store burgled

Police are hoping the public will help them in their investigation of a burglary at Mount Maunganui United Video. The Monday morning burglary happened at 3am with the offender stealing an undisclosed amount of cash before escaping out the back entrance to Fife Lane. Detective Mark Farrell is asking

for anyone who saw people acting suspiciously around that location or near the Shell service station nearby at that time to contact them.

Tsunami sirens reconsidered

Tauranga City Councillors are reconsidering having loud sirens installed in the city to alert people to the danger of a tsunami. In January the council decided to drop warning sirens from its package of alerts in favour of more electronic means. This decision came under fire and on Monday at a committee meeting councillors agreed to put the sirens back on the table for discussion by the full city council.

Polytechnic in the positive

The books at the Bay of Plenty Polytechnic are in good shape with its report for the end of the financial year showing it achieved a surplus of $4.5 million. This balance means it achieved the 3-5 per cent surplus required by government

education watchdog the Tertiary Education Commission. Polytechnic CEO Alan Hampton says the surplus is all the better given it comes in a year when there were extensive improvements made on campus including a new engineering block and automotive workshops.

Drive-In movies announced

The film line-up for the Baypark Drive-In Movie Festival is announced and among the seven titles and opening up the event is Elvis classic Viva Las Vegas. Also screening at the June 1-6 event is Jaws, Tron Legacy, Dawn of the Dead, ET, Robocop and a not yet named Kiwi classic and a people’s choice film. Baypark’s Karen Gemmell says the event has taken four months to organise and is being undertaken with the help of the 48 hours filmmaking competition creator Ant Timpson.

Changing location for Sunday School St Enoch’s Church is celebrating its 60th birthday.

In 1939 Mr and Mrs E Davies gathered together five children to form a Sunday School in a house owned by Mr Bryant, sited on Cameron Road at Hillsdene – where the Tauranga Boys’ College now stands. Little did they realise, they were laying the foundations for what was to become the parish of St Enoch’s Presbyterian Church.

The school was meant to serve as a branch of St Peter’s

parish Sunday School for children of the southern end of town. The Sunday School moved three times; first to the home of Mr and Mrs Grinder on Cameron Road, next to the home of Mr and Mrs Paul Jensen in Hunter Street – now 15th Avenue.

In 1941, with numbers growing, St Peter’s decided it was time to provide a more permanent place, so it purchased two sections in Wrigley Street – now 16th Avenue – and with the help of voluntary labour by Arthur Carswell, Harry Martin and Joe Steele, a small hall was built.

Some people shook their heads, declaring it a foolish place to build a Sunday School so far out in the country.

Skip forward to the present day; Rev Jim Wallace says what drew him to applying to the call to St Enoch’s was, as he was driving into town along the new motorway from Bethlehem, he looked up to see “the tower shining out between the clouds” and he knew “this was where God now wanted him to be”.

Over the years, each and every one of these men has brought their special talents to St Enoch’s. Some pastoral skills, others preaching skills. All have had a vision for St Enoch’s and it is due to their commitment that the church is now celebrating its 60th birthday.

European style market at the Palms There is a touch of Europe in the market scheduled to open soon at Palms Market.

“I have decided to scale down the garden centre and use the extra space to create a market based on the ones I have been involved with in Holland and have seen around Europe,” says owner Willem Kranenburg.

“It will be an alternative to a shopping mall.”

At the moment Willem is looking for stall holders and already has some ready to go. “I am just waiting for the wooden lock up sheds to arrive so sellers can leave their goods here and they will be safe and secure.

This is a good way for small businesses to get started with a low rental and no costly overheads.”

Willem would like to see a variety of stalls such as produce, clothing, bread makers, arts and crafts, books, home made preserves, jewellery and even pet supplies.

His intention is for the market to be open seven days

a week from 9am-4pm in the winter and 9am-5pm in the summer.

“I have been talking to tour operators in Rotorua and Hamilton and once we are established, they are interested in including us in their tour programmes.”

Willem already has a cafe up and running and is hoping to have the markets in full swing by summer.

A week full of city compost Tauranga City Council is organising several tours, speakers and workshops to coincide with International Compost week, which runs from May 2-8.

“We have run worm composting workshops for the last eight years and they are always well attended with at least 40 people; and there is always a waiting list,” says Tauranga City Council waste minimisa-

tion programme leader Kimberley Cleland. At the Village Hall in the Historic Village on Saturday, May 7 from 10-11am, there is a free workshop on how to make a worm bin from recycled materials.

“A worm bin is a system to put food scraps and worms in so they make vermicast, which is a great organic medium for growing and feeding plants,” says Kimberley.

“The containers can be made out of wood, plastic, metal, tyres; anything that can hold worms.”

The workshop is being taken by Nicole Masters who is an educator and biological agricultural specialist

based in Hawkes Bay; originally from Tauranga. Saturday afternoon is the worm composting workshop has been running for the last eight years.

On Sunday, May 8 at 1pm there is another workshop, purely looking at the make-up of compost.

This is being held at the Otumoetai Community Garden, Otumoetai Road, where the Lets Get Growing group already have compost bins set up.

Malcolm from ReVital is giving advice on composting and giving out spot prizes of Revital compost products.
