Bay of Plenty and Waikato secondary school choirs are today singing for a place at the Big Sing National Finale. Only 16 out of about 260 New Zealand choirs go through to the national final. Among those trying to reach the big notes are two choirs from Tauranga Girls’ College. The school’s chorale has made the national finale seven times in the last 10 years. Head of music Stephanie Geor says the girls have been rehearsing intensely to make the finale again. Rightly so, those genuinely unable to work due to illness or disability are hopping mad (especially the ones with only one leg) that they tend to get tarred with the same brush as bludgers who rip off the system.

Here at RR we have the utmost respect for those suffering real illnesses and disabilities. That’s why reasonable thinking, honest New Zealanders need to voice their disapproval of the shams such as this boxer on compo.

It can only do harm to genuine beneficiaries who find it hard enough get through each day, retaining respect in the community, without having their reputations tarnished by scammers.

As mentioned last week, I suffered tennis elbow for a time last year, but managed to keep working.

How can a gospel singer reasonably be awarded a benefit for tennis elbow, yet still be fit enough to box?

Besides, tennis elbow didn’t stop me singing gospel. There were times, through the dark days of my disability, that I managed to belt out some lovely old gospel numbers.

Including: ‘My Lord, That Hurts’ Another common one: ‘Jesus Christ, I’m in Agony’ Plus the time honoured hymn: ‘Oh God, That’s so Painful’ Several people listening to my rendition of that last number agreed.

Although I think they were commenting on the quality of the singing.

Cheerfulness ratings

As we approach the shortest day, which coincidentally this year falls just before the longest night, it’s a good opportunity for all you RR followers to carry out a midwinter audit on your cheerfulness ratings.

Those found to be in deficit will be beaten until cheerful.

Know Things’ that levels of happiness can bottom out in the depths of winter. Called SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder) is a type of depression that occurs as the days grow shorter. No-one knows why the odd word ‘affective’ was needed in the name of the malady; except that it conveniently spells ‘sad’ because really it could be called Seasonal Depression. But that wouldn’t be

as catchy, would it? And without a snazzy acronym we’d just get more depressed.

Basically it is caused by decreasing amounts of sunlight and colder temperatures, rugby losses and the demise of Charlie Sheen in ‘Two and a Half Men.’ Here in the wonderful Bay of Plenty, we could hardly say winter has even started, so it’s surprising that anyone is feeling any ill ‘affectives’ at all.

The temperatures have been so mild, with hardly a frost and despite record rainfall, really it hasn’t been that bad, eh?

However, some of you are certainly showing signs of some seasonal problems.

Apparently the condition is more common in young adult women, which is why in my younger years, I made it my life’s ambition to help raise the spirits of young adult women everywhere. Mostly this was achieved; as at last, in the depths of winter, they found something to laugh about.

Well at least God Loves a Trier (probably another gospel number).

Now of course happily married and middle aged, it’s up to the new generation of caring young males to cheer up the fairer sex; a quick text should do it.

At least that way, you’re out of slapping distance.

Symptoms of SAD include tiredness, fatigue, depression, crying spells, irritability, trouble concentrating, body aches, loss of sex drive, poor sleep, decreased activity level, and overeating, especially of carbohydrates, with associated weight gain.

Other signs that someone may be suffering SAD that RR researchers have noted: road rage, lack of punctuation (Apostrophe Deficit Syndrome); a general loss of hope, such as showing a tendency to put up with Petra Bagust in the mornings; finding themselves gradually accepting Tauranga City rate rises will be in double figures...

Now get that rust bucket Toyota Apostrophe out of the road; I need to get home to sleep before I cry on my portly waistline.

In other headlines this week, ACC says a New Zealand farmer is injured on the job every 28 minutes. This is shocking. If I was that guy, I’d be a lot more careful, or find another job.

Parting thought:

If you’re not allowed to take a same sex date to the school ball, who is going to dance the Gay Gordons?

Council sitting on reserve funds Tauranga City Council is sitting on $29.43 million in unspent reserve contributions.

This is money paid to the council by developers when they pay subdivision impact fees.

By law the council is required to return the money to the developers if it is not spent within 10 years.

The $29.43m is sourced from subdivisions across the Tauranga City Council area and is to be allocated in this way: • Sports fields and sub regional reserves $11.57m • Mount infill neighbourhood reserves $4.9m • Tauranga infill neighbourhood reserves $7.71m • Papamoa neighbourhood reserves $2.08m • Welcome Bay neighbourhood reserves $1.23m These amounts are continually increasing as more development contributions arrive, and with interest.

The requirement to spend the money was flagged for discussion during a workshop with developers this week, but the topic was not discussed.

It was put there as a reminder to the councillors, says council acting chief executive Christine Jones.

“It really depends on what they decide to do in the next Ten Year Plan,” says Christine. “This is a discussion about where do you want to go now with this?

“And what do you want to do in terms of the network of infrastructure?”

The last Ten Year Plan flagged some spending in the years 2011, 2012 and 2013, which will be in the next Ten Year Plan.

The council is in the middle of a level-of-service

review for sports fields, what it is going to do with them, how much they want to provide and of what quality.

“The outcome of that review will drive us to know how much and where this money is spent,” says Christine.

“Once they have had this discussion and they have done the Ten Year Plan, there will be an answer coming out the other end – what will be spent where.

“If stuff isn’t going to be spent then it will go through a refund process.”

City parks director Marie Gordon says the council owns land at Papamoa, Bethlehem, Ohauiti and Pyes Pa that is earmarked for sports field development.

She says this was undertaken as part of the process in determining the level of the developer fees.

“Evidence had been required to demonstrate why we need to collect that revenue,” says Marie.

“So from a planning point of view and from a financial point of view, that work has needed to be done and has been done.”

Another factor is the planning period – the time during which the council sets itself to get the work done.

Most of the money has to be spent by 2021, which is part of the next Ten Year Plan period, from 20122022.

“When you have a backload of money collected, a decision needs to be made when and how and if that money is actually going to be spent.”

Surfer organises beach clean-up Tauranga residents are being urged to help clean rubbish off the beaches this Sunday.

It is the second time the ‘Bash the Trash’ beach cleanup event has been held.

Local surfer Tully Farrell is organising the event in conjunction with Tauranga City Council and park rangers.

Residents are encouraged to bring along friends and family to Tay Street Beach when the cleanup starts at 1pm.

Last year more than 30 large bags were filled with rubbish.

“We found a lot more rubbish than we thought we would,” says Tully.

“A lot of it was older rubbish trapped in sand dunes. And a lot of that ends up in the ocean.”

He decided to start the event last year because, as a surf instructor, he considers the beach and ocean to be his ‘office’.

“Our city is growing quite rapidly and encroaching on it quite considerably. If we let it go it’s going to get worse.”

This year’s event is also coinciding with International Surfing Day and other beach cleanups around the world.

Those who attend the event are given a bag to collect any rubbish. Time given for the cleanup would be appreciated says Tully.

He is urging people not to be late so they can be briefed.

Mount track reopens at a cost Councillor Murray Guy ran into trouble at a Projects and Monitoring Committee meeting when he asked where the money came from to repair the slips to the Mount and the base track.

It’s cost $650,000 to repair the base track, which is being re-opened today, Friday, June 17 after being closed since January.

“I’m just curious how we are able to achieve that,” says Murray.

The Tauranga City Council provoked a public backlash by not giving $30,000 to save Sydenham Park.

“This is a huge amount to me. I’m just surprised the open spaces budget had it available, given that we are running such a tight ship.”

Chairman of the Mauao Project Steering Group councillor Wayne Moultrie told Murray the costs and where the money is to come from was discussed last week at a meeting that Murray could have attended – but chose not to.

“He could have had his answers a week ago.”

The $650,000 comes out of the open spaces budget and has been found by reallocating and reprioritising other items says city services group manager Ian McDonald.

“I still haven’t come to grips with the incredible costs,” says Murray.

Murray was chided for his politically incorrect description of “a gravel track around a rock,” when he questioned the $110,000 spent on a geotechnical report – he considered there were council staff with the skills and experience to do it.

How the golden goose was cooked The saga of the leaks and water temperature in the Mount Hot Salt Water Pools has culminated in their closure for 16-18 weeks according to Tauranga City Aquatics Ltd (TCAL) chairman Warren Banks.

water from a bore and then discharged back into the harbour. The threat of meningitis precludes use of the bore water directly in the pool as used to happen when the pools first opened in the 60s.

All councillors attended a meeting and inspection on site recently to view the situation first hand.

First up I have to say that PR-wise the situation has not been well handled by TCAL. For weeks leading up to this closure hot pool users had been ringing me to try and get some action in getting the pools up to advertised temperatures, particularly first thing in the morning.

Complaints to pool staff produced no improvement and the issue had become diluted (pun intended) because customers had been taking in their own thermometers to prove claims the pools weren’t up to advertised temperatures. Even though my informants said the thermometers were in enclosed plastic covering, the issue had become the danger of the glass thermometers breaking. All of this was relayed to TCAL so the problem was well known. Public action by pool users ultimately forced the issue and the next thing elected members knew – the complex was closed.

Most people, at the Mount in particular, would know the devastating effect salt water has on machinery. Our inspection showed the dismal condition of the pumps and filter plant. It’s a wonder they kept going this long.

Council is not without blame for this either.

Shaking things up

A few days later we had the on-site meeting. This whole process was probably not the best way of going about things. Once again more power to the people who brought the matter to a head. This has all had much press and they have made a feast of it, but there is much more to it that is not sensational and hasn’t had such focus.

Apparently Rick Curach, a Mount resident for many years, was unaware of this, as he thoughtfully told a council meeting it would save millions of litres of water once the leak was fixed. It seems he thought they were fresh hot water pools. Or maybe someone stood by the water inlet with a salt shaker?

In a Bay Times opinion piece on Tuesday the writer also appears to be unaware that these are hot salt water pools.

He thought the leak should have been picked up by ‘whoever paid the water bill, noticing a pretty major jump in water usage’.

How it really works is that salt water is pumped from the harbour, run through a heat exchanger heated by hot thermal salt

Plans for a pool plant upgrade have been around for two or three years and got caught up in the resource consent application for the proposed (now failed) pools expansion.

From my perspective, TCAL and its contractors have done well to keep the place going this long. Council, as owner of the complex, has told TCAL to fix the pools ASAP. As depreciation is cash funded there will be no extra call on ratepayers to pay the about $1.5 million fix. There are no plans of the existing pipe structure layout, which we were told, run under the concrete floors of the pools thereby ensuring no repairs. New pipes will be placed around the perimeter and the old pipes blocked off. So blame for this debacle must be shared with the old Mount Borough Council who built them, Tauranga City Council and TCAL. You could say that the golden goose has been well and truly cooked as these pools are the only pools that produce a (healthy) surplus out of all the aquatic network. Estimates are of $160,000 per month revenue loss over 4-5 months – close to $1 million. Oh joy!

Eyeing up a new front

The other interesting issue for council is the ongoing (for 20 years) waterfront upgrade(s).

Council has adopted a practical way forward for this, which might just work after many failed attempts. In my opinion one of the reasons past proposals failed was because they were too detailed and too specific. This created controversy and disagreement, plus the cost. So this time the existing resource

consent application will be continued and once obtained council will proceed with only one phase at a time, over the years as it can be afforded. This way additions and deletions can be made as community use evolves.

Applications for changes to consents can be made as and when needed. This process means that the proposed $20 million in the upcoming Ten Year Plan can be significantly reduced.

Planning cost problems

Comments attributed to me in the Bay of Plenty Times were incorrectly reported.

What I actually said was that lessons to be learned from the past were NOT to take the waterfront from one point to another in one foul swoop. The first stage is to get cars off the reclamation so people can see the harbour, and provision of non controversial things like grass and a boardwalk.

It’s not the Resource Management Act that is entirely at fault – its principles are noble and worthy in the main. But interpretations and manipulations over the past 20 years since its inception have almost rendered it an unaffordable excess.

This government promised practical reviews, but it’s hard to see this down here at the coal face.

Hearing ideas and needs

At projects and monitoring committee, elected members received a presentation about houses built from shipping containers here in the city. More of a modular system than what you might be imagining. They are extremely strong we were told and earthquake proof too. Their construction yard is down at Sulphur Point and you can see them being built on the old storage yard. Some imaginative designs were presented and they looked impressive. As the presenter said – design adds value like nothing else.

There was also another presentation from surf lifesavers who receive about 10 per cent of their funding from local councils, two per cent from ACC and 15 per cent from pokies.

ACC got off really light – when you consider that BOP Lifesavers claim they saved 44 lives this past season. ACC should pay more – much more, and ratepayers less.

Sand the ultimate playing field The fun of the beach has won out over the hard court for volleyball pair Caleb MattisonSmith and Mitchell Kerr-Bell.

The Mount Maunganui College Year 13 students were selected to trial for the New Zealand under 19 teams in both indoor and beach codes, but a clash in training events has forced them to choose just one.

Next month, the pair is off to Singapore with the New Zealand U19 beach team to take part in a week’s training camp, before competing in a regional tournament.

The pair formed after selectors at the beach volleyball nationals spotted their talent and saw them as a strong combination.

Mitchell, who has played volleyball since Year 10, says he loves the energy and spirit of the game.

“It’s the fun that you get out of it, you have a lot of fun playing out there.”

Both are disappointed to have to turn their backs on the indoor game – including a chance to trial for the North Island secondary school team.

Mitchell says he is “pretty gutted”.

Caleb, who has only played volleyball for two years, has also dropped basketball to put his complete focus into the beach game. He has done well in

basketball – including trialling for the New Zealand age-group team last year – but like Mitchell is now putting his high ambitions into the beach game.

They are determined to make the world championships next year.

“We want to be ranked the top pair in New Zealand,” says Caleb.

It’s a sentiment echoed by Mitchell, who says he is determined to become a successful volleyball player.

The pair is currently putting everything into their training, hitting the court for two three hour sessions, three times a week, in preparation for the

Singapore trip from July 15 to 25.

Mount College Volleyball coach Brendon-Ray Horlock says the boys have done well and it is great to see them achieve the national level that is dominated by Otumoetai College (OC), Tauranga Boys College (TBC) and Whakatane’s Trident College.

Brendon-Ray says such strong local volleyball competition is lifting the standard at all Bay of Plenty schools, but was not going to “kid ourselves” that Mount College is in the same league.

Bay reggae hosts a party Papamoa band ‘6TB’ or ‘Six2ThaBand’ is hosting three up and coming Aotearoa roots bands at the end of the month, as they endeavour to boost the recognition and importance of original, New Zealand music.

Inviting bands, – 4th Generation (Hamilton), Too Much Cuz (Wairoa) and Hori-Fyde Selection (Wainuiomata) – to share their music with Tauranga is a vision encompassing whanaungatanga and friendships, says band manger Ngahuia Cassidy.

“6TB is built upon strong foundations and like mindedness, vocalised through the artistry of music, sounds and rhythm,” says Ngahuia.

The begins with a fringe gig on June 23 at the Mount Mellick.

It is at this bar that 6TB won the recent Battle of the Bands, and Ngahuia says they are grateful for the bar’s ongoing support.

“DJ Sito and Flpipe are both Chilean and we said ‘we need your sound’,” says Karaitiana.

“Flpipe has a gift where his fingers and his guitar together are just magic, so now we have this up-beat reggae sound with a South American flavour.”

The band draws its inspiration from Bob Marley and Stevie Wonder, bringing “heart and soul to their original music”.

Since beginning with covers, the band has now banished them from its repertoire.

Karaitiana says they “don’t have the knack for covers”.

“I enjoy covers and listening to music, but don’t enjoy singing them.

“I don’t want to ruin the artist’s style, so we write about everyday influences and write a lot about what we see, about our home town.”

Ashley, who is one of five local Rangers to earn the Queen’s Guide Award this year, says it was

fantastic to complete the award after joining the Guiding movements as a five-year-old Pippin.

“I would definitely encourage others to get involved and do the award. I’ve learnt a lot and it’s been great for my confidence and leadership skills.”

Some of the jobs Ashley did to achieve the award include, helping run a Pippins group as assistant leader, organising a camp, lighting a fire then cooking a meal in

the pouring rain.

Tauranga Girl Guides spokeswoman Robyn Denize says achieving the award is a major achievement, requiring top leadership and teamwork skills.

Training future stars Changes in the junior soccer competition format being piloted at Otumoetai Football Club are a boost to the game.

Otumoetai is one of 100 clubs across the country to begin trialling the new format this season and already club manager Barry Lusher is calling the focus on skill development a success.

“We’ve been running it for five to six weeks and it’s been an absolute boon,” he says. “Already you are seeing significant improvement in a lot of players’ skill.”

His comments were backed up by club junior competition organiser Tracy Biddle who says while many parents had initial reservations about the need to change the game’s format, feedback since starting “has been really fantastic”.

The ‘Whole of Football Plan’ has been developed by New Zealand Football to provide consistent skills and game development at junior levels to build the standard of the game across the country. It is based on successful overseas plans.

The programme is being trialled in the five to seven-year-old competition this year, with a gradual roll-out planned across the country, eventually up to the 19-year-old level.

Barry says instead of spending all their time playing, the 220 junior players in the pilot now divide their hour slot into three ten-minute segments of skills development activities before finishing off with a short game.

The policy provides a framework should a decision arise regarding the use of the indoor facilities network.

Indoor bowlers are major users of the Greerton Community Hall.

They have been using the hall on evenings mid-week for about 40 years says Greerton indoor bowls president Dave Crockett.

As regular long-term users of the hall, Greerton and Gate Pa clubs want assurance they will have priority if there was ever a conflict of use.

They were able to be relocated to the Memorial Hall and borrow mats and

bowls says Dave.

It was a stressful few hours.

“Some of our members are close to 90 and are not capable of carrying and shoving things about too much,” says Dave.

They want recognition for long-term users to reduce the possibility of being bumped should the opportunity arise.

It was an appeal endorsed by councillor Bill Faulkner who says the indoor bowlers are the heart of the community.

The councillors decided ‘the impact on user groups’ factor will be moved closer to the top of the list to be considered by management if competition for use of an indoor bowling facility arises.

Conflict between user groups has historically been an issue associated with the use of QE2 youth centre for non-sports exhibitions and events. The new Baypark arena is expected to alleviate the issue.

New swimming school Learner swimmers in Omokoroa are set to benefit with a large new pool and swimming school this summer, with work to begin in the next three months.

Omokoroa No 1 School Board of Trustees pool committee member Aaron Power says community members are “pretty excited” about the new 25x10m pool.

It will replace the existing 52-year-old pool, which is 4x7m.

Aaron says it is hoped ongoing pool operating costs are covered by a swim school operator that will run classes outside of school hours.

“At the moment, about 100 children go off to Tauranga or Katikati for swimming lessons – that’s where the nearest swim

schools and squads are – so that will make a big difference.”

Aaron says about $160,000 of the $300,000 price tag had been raised and he is confident planned fundraising activities will help reach the target by the year’s end.

“We hope to have it finished by the end of the year. We believe that’s realistic.”

Along with ongoing fundraising Aaron hopes two major events planned for November – an Omokoroa house ramble and the school’s annual ride-on mower day – will help them reach the target.

Principal Chris Broadhurst says the new pool will make it much easier for children to learn to swim – something he believes the school has a “moral obligation” to help with.

“Hopefully it will mean that more of the children are stronger and safer swimmers, which is particularly important here.”

The pool is going to be heated and should operate all year round.

Donations key for hospice

Dwindling donations from large charitable trusts has forced Waipuna Hospice to seek more valuables for its secondhand stores.

The two stores, located in Greerton and Fraser Cove, provide significant revenue for the hospice.

Donated items such as household appliances, clothing, garden tools and furniture are sold at the stores and the proceeds help cover the hospice’s $1.5 million operating costs.

“Our shops turn second-hand goods into first class care, because that’s what it does.

That money comes directly to us here at the hospice to help fund our services, keeping it free of charge for our patients,” says Waipuna Hospice fundraising manager Trish Rae.

The hospice is currently experiencing ‘donor fatigue’ as it becomes harder to get funding from traditional sources such as pub charities and trusts.

“It’s going to be a lean time,” says Trish.

About 90 volunteers help run the second-hand stores.

“The key to the success of the shops is securing a continuous supply of quality donated goods.

“We’re encouraging the community to have a good look around their house and garage to see what goods are surplus to their needs and consider donating them.”

Keen interest from hunters

Hundreds of keen hunters and fishers are putting their skills to the test in a new competition organised by a group of keen Te Puna outdoorsmen.

Ken Griffin, one of the Quarry Tavern Community Sports Club committee members behind the inaugural event, says they have already decided to make it an annual event and have sponsors committed for 2012.

“I think we will get close to 200 teams (of four). We have been getting calls from all over – from down in Invercargill, Queenstown and Blenheim.

We’ve even got someone coming from Australia.”

The Polaris Big Four hunting and fishing competition is focussed on the ‘big four’ land-based trophies; a red stag, boar, trout and pheasant. Prizes are given for the best individual male pheasant, the heaviest stage, boar and trout and the team with the highest combined points tally for all four.

Ken expects half of the teams to be hunting locally, while others will hit the bush in their backyard.

“Right now everyone is going to be out trying to find where the best stags and boars are, so they know where to head.”

The keen hunter says he will be so busy helping run the four-day event he will only be able to take part for one day.

“It started out as a bit of fun and now it’s become a job.”

Designing for difference Concepts of hand-knitting and crochet are getting a re-vamp in a Tauranga fashion designer’s latest collection of what she describes as “bold, statement pieces”.

Bay of Plenty Polytechnic design group leader Debra Laraman is displaying her collection ‘Hooked on Design’ at the Kestral building on The Strand until Saturday, June 18.

Her collection includes pieces that have won awards at the Westfield Style Pasifika Awards and the Hokonui Wool Awards in 2010.

“My pieces are about taking the idea of traditional knitting to a new fashion street wear look,” says Debra.

After working in Australia for 20 years as a fashion illustrator and a textile designer,

Debra came back to New Zealand and has been tutoring at the Polytechnic, teaching the skills she has learnt and studied over the years.

“This collection is an extension of my work with the Polytechnic’s third year degree students. We’ve been looking at hand-craft and ways to develop garments,” says Debra.

“It is about keeping up-to-date with the trends as part of professional development.”

Teaching students from anywhere between 16 and 60 years old, Debra says she enjoys getting to develop the skills of a wide range of people for future careers in fashion.

“This is a good industry to get into in New Zealand because it is so small, there are a lot more opportunities than in a country with lots of competition.” By Laura Weaser

Hard work – great rewards

Calling all volunteers: Barbara Rowe with a conch shell from a VSA trip to Fiji.

Long hours, hard work, basic living conditions and no pay – it sounds like a job from hell, but for Barbara Rowe it was some of the most satisfying work of her life.

Barbara describes her two stints of unpaid work on overseas aid projects for Volunteer Service Abroad (VSA) as some of the most rewarding experiences she has had.

More than 40 years on since going to Fiji for her first VSA assignment she still loves discussing her experiences.

She is holding a meeting for former volunteers and those interested in VSA in the hope of setting up a Tauranga branch of the organisation. The branch will promote VSA, support volunteers and be a social group.

Barbara describes her two stints as a volunteer teacher as an “absolutely fantastic experience”.

“Time away can be a great learning curve. You are asked to do all sorts of things in situations that

you never envisaged. It all adds up to the great experience of a lifetime,” she says.

In Fiji the young teacher was made headmistress in charge of a 420-pupil school.

“I had only been working for three years and I was expected to know how to do everything. I was working 18-20 hours a day.”

Two years after returning from her first trip Barbara set sail on another South Pacific volunteering adventure – this time to the New Hebrides (Vanuatu) where she taught English as a second language to adult students.

Barbara says many other VSA volunteers would have liked to repeat their experience, but few did because of the sacrifice in savings it entailed.

She says the experience taught her a lot, particularly “that people can be different, but they are not wrong – they are just different.”

Tauranga Girls’ College Head of Music Stephanie Geor says the school’s chorale had made the national finale in seven of the last 10 years and had been rehearsing hard with the aim of doing it again.

“The standard of college-age choirs in New Zealand is among the highest in the world, so to gain a place in the finale is a huge achievement and an honour that is highly sought after,” says Stephanie.

The choral competition takes place today, Friday, June 17, at the Bethlehem College Performing Arts Centre from 9.30am to 2.30pm and is open to the public.

Voices are in full song in Bethlehem as secondary school choirs from around the Bay of Plenty and Waikato compete in the regional Big Sing.

The choral competition co-convenor Judy Tallon says it is three years since a Tauranga team had qualified for the national finale, but hopes the drought will break today.

“It is a bit sad, but with only 16 of the choirs getting through out of about 260 that take part, the standards are very high.”

Born to be wild We were looking for adventure and whatever came our way. So the Jeep was loaded, lock, stock, and soon-to-be smoking barrels, and pointed south for a change.

The transportation was so full up I had to spend the entire trip sitting on the boss man’s knee. I know for a fact the boss likes me, but this was taking things a little too far. Both were pretty happy that the trip was only an hour in duration.

I don’t remember reading about this in ‘Diesel’s Guide to Hunting Dog Travel’ and I doubt any lap would have lasted

long with the big boy on it anyway.

On arrival, the door was opened, and mmmm I smelt chooks – so the trip was immediately forgotten as I switched into hunting mode.

chooks and they had the sense to lock them up. Like the teenage footie team arriving in town, where all mothers are warned to lock up their daughters.

My two-legger masters tossed the luggage into their dwellings, the case of wine was put by the fire for the females of the species to while away the afternoon, and the boys and I heeded the call of the wild reverberating through the bush.

“Let’s go hunting.”

In a flash, they were changed into all that funny gear and clambering aboard the water transport. Into it!

No rest, no food and no sleeping in front of the fire.

Wild goose chase Now as the farming world has finally had enough of those Canada Geese and they have been deemed pests, we were invited onto a spot our gracious host Keith had been keeping an eye on for us. Around a peninsula in the lake we cruised, closer we got, still couldn’t see a thing, when all of a sudden a grassy pasture unfolded. Well the grass was pretty much hidden by geese.

The boss was so excited I swear he almost bounced overboard.

Me? Well you want me to retrieve those things? I don’t think so. I have a weight rule. Anything larger than a fat chook is getting near my limit.

As always though, the boys were hatching a plan, so cunning it did not work. As the boss clambered onto a jetty and signalled to uncle about what was about to happen, well me thinks the boss’s heart rate was beating at about 200, and he got all his hand waving back to front.

So that was another plot that failed. Well not entirely; they did get a couple and now we know the ‘lay of the land’ we will be back for more.

Now onwards to the next possie, where the boss got out of the boat before it hit the beach, only to realise too late that the water was a little deeper than he thought. Wet socks again, when is he going to learn?

After skulking around in the undergrowth pretending to be a tree and making ridiculous ducky sounds that fooled no-one, a couple of disorientated mallards blundered overhead and succumbed quickly to some high speed steel. Falling in the water, they seemed well within my self-appointed limits of range, weight and ease of retrieval. So off I went, carefully swimming back to the beach with the feathery floater, much to the delight of the

boss. Now I finally see the point of fetching all those sticks during summer.

It was slowly dawning in the recesses of my canine mind that this, indeed, is my calling.

The boss, clearly chuffed, mumbled something about good breeding and his excellent training. Gee, and I thought it was in my genes. I just wanted another one to fall out of the sky so I could go again.

As it was getting a little bleak and dark we decided to head to the fire and wine, but not before stopping and giving the boss a birthday sideshow, sorry I cannot divulge what it was, but I can say that somewhere on the Central Plateau, there is a lake with a few less black swans in residence.

Back on shore, the two-leggers showered, washed and dried me,

and the team were firmly ensconced in front of the fire. The ladies were about to serve dinner – I for one do not know how judging by the empty bottles scattered around. I would have thought they would only be sharing my dog biscuits, but no, a sumptuous meal appeared. The boss was so chuffed with me finally doing the pointer-retriever thing he wanted to set a place at the table with him. It’s alright boss, I know you love me, but I will stay in front of the fire thanks – clever as I am, I cannot remember which paw to hold the knife with.

There followed much discussion on the various recipes that would be tried on our selection of game meats. Me, I just pondered on which of my retrieving photos showed my best side.

Many, many thanks to Chris and Keith for being just the best hosts and we will be back to scare a few more geese and check up on the chooks. Meanwhile below is something to keep you going while the duck is marinating and the geese breasts brining.

Hearty beef & bean soup Ingredients • 1 cup dried red beans, soaked overnight • 1 large or 2 small onions • 2 cloves of garlic • 4 to 6 beef soup bones or shins • 1 large or 2 smaller carrots • 1 diced potato • 1 410g tinned tomatoes • 1 chopped celery rib • 1/2 cup pearl barley • 1/2 cup red lentils • 1 litre stock – we use homemade chicken stock • Fresh herbs – we use rosemary, thyme, parsley and a bay leaf

browned. Add to slow cooker.

7. Add 2 cups of warm water to the pan and simmer. After about 5 minutes, add the water to the slow cooker.

8. Add diced carrots, potato and celery, the tin of tomatoes, the pearl barley and red lentils to the slow cooker.

9. Add 1 litre of stock – I use home made chicken stock 10. Place a twig each of rosemary, thyme and parsley on top, as well as Method a bay leaf or two.

Community communication in action The regional council is taking community communication to a new level.

Community consultation is not generally respected, but the BOP Regional Council Northern Harbour

Recreation Strategy meeting is the start of a much closer relationship between regional council and communities. The meetings have a general focus, but the agendas are not lesson plans from on high.

last week is a good example of this new approach. People worried about the use and abuse of the harbour, interacted with regional council representatives, officers, support staff and scientists. Everyone was able to have their say – and more importantly know that they were heard.

Setting the direction for transport in the Bay Over the last year, the Bay of Plenty Regional Transport Committee has been working on a draft Bay of Plenty Regional Land Transport Strategy 2011– 2041 to replace the current strategy.

The aim is to set a direction that will support the growth of our economy and improve road

safety, while recognising the need for environmental sustainability and ensuring our transport investments represent value for money. The strategy determines how the region’s transport funding is allocated and influences transport planning by the local councils and the NZTA. The Regional Transport Committee has established a regional vision of: Best transport

systems for a growing economy and a safe and vibrant Bay lifestyle.

Guiding hand for girls Volunteering is the lifeblood of GirlGuiding as much today as when the organisation was formed more than 100 years ago.

Bay of Plenty GirlGuiding spokeswoman Robyn Denize says the organisation – which is focussed on fostering girls’ personal development – is thankful for all the volunteer help it receives from leaders and helpers.

“Without all their work, we wouldn’t be able to provide all the great things we do,” she says.

GirlGuiding has 66 leaders in the Bay of Plenty region who run groups from five-yearold Pippins through to 18-year-old Ranger Guides units.

Behind the leaders is a team of 40 volun-

teers in support and administrative roles.

Robyn says while the positions are unpaid, volunteers are rewarded with the “priceless” satisfaction of helping the young girls, along with a learning and development programme that can look good on their CV. “Our leaders are fun, enthusiastic people from all backgrounds, who help to help teach our girls a thing or two about life.”

She says leaders all have something to offer the girls – whether they are “good fun, arty, sporty or just want to share life skills” – to help them grow to become the best they can be.

“We would like to thank these volunteers who spare a few hours here and there to provide support to our GirlGuiding leaders and help our girls,” says Robyn.

Volunteer week is about recognising the quality, depth and extent of work undertaken by a very select group of people - a group who, for the most part, work behind the scenes to add value to their communities.

While this value can often be assessed in terms of dollars raised or people helped, it is difficult to quantify the contribution of volunteers in terms of bringing a community together.

Without their efforts the term community would be relatively devoid of meaning, for community is all about participation, empathy, friendship and pride.

During this special week we would like to pass on our sincere thanks to the dedicated few who look beyond their own busy professional and personal lives to volunteer their support to worthy causes.

Volunteer WBOP has about 700-800 volunteers active each month, meaning the centre has regular contact with them.

The centre has also begun a Team Volunteer Project, under which two schools have signed up for volunteer work as part of

the Gateway programme.

Tauranga Boys’ College has been assisting at the Historic Village and Mount Maunganui College students have been working on ‘Adopt a Beach’ – planting, weeding and working on conservation of the beach.

New centre manager Margaret Butler says they have 80 different groups affiliated to the centre, including National Heart Foundation and Salvation Army.

“Being affiliated to us means we find them volunteers. We can and will recommend people off

our database for paid positions with the affiliating organisation,” says Margaret.

Margaret has been with the volunteer centre for 18 months and has recently stepped into the position of manager after working in administration as a recruitment and referral officer.

“To become a volunteer, we give each applicant an appointment and interview and then they go through a seminar on how to be a volunteer. Margaret says people become volunteers for many different reasons.

“Some people join to upskill or learn a new skill, make friends and find work. Many people also join after first moving to the area.

At the Volunteer Centre in the Historic Village there are two days where volunteers and prospective volunteers can come, network with others, register and look through the list of positions available: Monday, June 20 and Wednesday, June 22 at 10am.

Feeding a growing mind

Nevaeh Cafe and Restaurant may seem like just another cafe in Welcome Bay, but it is offering a range of life services for young individuals.

The cafe doubles as The Eagles Academy Charitable Trust – a NZQA accredited training ground for young people aged 15 to 20 years old looking to break into working life.

With hands-on training in barista, hospitality and general work practices in the cafe, the organisation sets out to educate young workers in correct behaviour and sets them up with practical working skills.

Owners Daniel and Noeline Clarke say the training is aimed at those with low skill levels and can take on students for short or long periods of time.

“We are interested in the individual – not just training, but one-on-one mentoring.

“We look at the bigger picture and want to help these youngsters work towards a qualification or just teach them how important it is to show up for work.”

ToughLove is a parents’ only support group that meets every Monday from 12.30-2.30pm and 7-9pm. The group is for parents, run by parents, to discuss family situations and provide solutions for family problems.

youth and family education programmes plus one-on-one support, counselling and family meetings.

Youth Mentoring Trust has volunteer mentors guiding and coaching youths aged 10 to 15 years through the problems they may face.

Help appreciated

Julia says the organisations appreciate all the help their current volunteers provide to help families and youths through their problems.

“We don’t have a huge pool of volunteers, but the volunteer input we have we appreciate.”

Julia says Youth Mentoring provides free training for volunteers and anyone who is keen to get involved and spend time helping others and encourages those with time to lend a hand.

much to our amusement. This is the same mistake many of us can make with our surfing.

Winter can mean less surfing for most, as shorter days, winter sport, kids sport, laziness, coldwater and equipment all become excuses for not getting in the water. Then when you do get in, a full

length wetsuit, poor fitness, summer wax, combined with one to many pies or ales, can add up to a frustrating and humbling experience.

There is still plenty of opportunity for water time in winter; you just have to adjust the way you surf.

Firstly, shed the thought of four-hour surfs. Unless you are willing to spend big on the latest wetsuit, this is an unrealistic expectation. Wave count is the ultimate.

Whilst in summer you naturally get a lot of waves, with time pressure – you may only have an hour to get your quota. So less talk and more action is required.

As age and gravity take hold, so to do our learned habits. What you do out of the water can have significant effect of the quality of your surfing. If you are working on your fitness or even just keeping active in some way and watching your diet you should lessen winter’s impact. A lot of us put on the Kiwi winter coat, with the extra intake of stomach warming pies and sausage rolls. If you put this extra weight on and have less fitness it will be detrimental to your ability in the water. Try walking around with 5-7kg in a backpack and you will immediately notice the difference on land.

The effect this weight has on your board’s buoyancy and the extra pressure it puts on your weakened paddling muscles could be the difference between catching the wave of the day or watching it go unridden to the beach. Worst still, you could be stuck in the impact zone duckdiving the best waves.

My friend was able to get his suit jacket adjusted to fit and therefore function properly instead of acting like a corset. You don’t have that ease of adjustment with surfing. If you want to maintain your summer surfing levels, then you may need to adjust what you do before you paddle out.

Teaching turn taking Turn taking is more often referred to in terms of knowing when to start and finish a conversation in order that another speaker can engage with you. For toddlers, turn taking with objects is no different. They must learn to know when to start playing with something and being prepared to either hand it on to someone else or receive something from someone else.

Turn taking is similar and yet different to sharing as a concept for young toddlers and children to learn. Early turn taking is an important skill for children to learn as it forms the basis of respectful relationships based on give-and-take and is required for the social necessities of our oral language.

Teaching a child to take turns can be a time-consuming and frustrating task. While sometimes toddlers play may end in fights over what toy belongs to whom, it is still important that you continue to expose your children to other toddlers. The only way they’re really going to learn is by hands-on experience. Mums have to be constantly nearby and refereeing.

When teaching your child to turn take, it is important to set realistic expectations.

Remember when you first start out, they do not yet understand how other people feel and cannot empathise with hurt feelings.

They do not know what “sorry” is – let alone understand when to apply it.

• Use a bouncing ball to illustrate the concept of turn taking. “I am going to bounce or roll the ball to you. Then it will be your turn to bounce or roll the ball back to me.”

• When completing everyday tasks with your child, talk to them about whose turn it is. “Now it is your turn to use the soap and water, when you are finished it will be my turn.”

• Use the words ‘turn taking’ instead of sharing. Turn taking means the toy they give to another for a ‘turn’ will eventually come back after a period of time.

• Break time into manageable, concrete examples. Teaching children about the concept of time as well as turn taking helps the process. “When the buzzer goes on the microwave or when I clap my hands after the little hand on the watch has gone around the face five times.”

• Limit the amount of time each child plays with a toy by using

an egg timer. This gives children equal amounts of play time, but it also takes the blame off of you if your child gets upset.

You’re not telling them it’s time to give up the toy, the timer is telling them it’s time to give up the toy.

• Decide with your child which of their toys they are happy for other children to play with and which special ones they want put aside for their own special play time or exclusive use.

• Ask yourself what you can realistically expect your child to share (take turns with others), they certainly do not have to share everything they own, after all would you share your toothbrush just because someone asked nicely?

When the fighting gets out of hand, take the children outside for a change of scenery or offer them a healthy snack. Whatever you do, don’t lose your cool. Turn taking will come eventually – it just takes a little patience.

Dancing routines at the ready

Students at Greerton Village School have been practising their dance routine to prepare for the annual BOP Dance Festival.

Teacher Caroline Taylor-Levey says the school is involved for the first time this year.

The Year 3-6 students taking part are “really loving” the whole process, from developing the choreography to the dancing.

Caroline says students explored ideas around the festival’s ‘kaleidoscope’ theme when they were creating the dance – including the concepts of reflection, colour, pattern and shape.

Fundraising through food

Learning to cook on a budget is a lesson the parents and children of Greenpark School are sharing as a fundraiser for their trip to Korea.

Twenty three adults and children are going to Korea in September as part of the school’s sister city exchange programme.

The exchange allows Greenpark students to experience Korea culture and studies while staying with a host family. The students go to a Korean school during the day and explore the city in the evening and weekends.

Assistant principal and organiser Christina Reef says she developed the fundraiser around destitute gourmet (dg) – a group dedicated to developing fashionable food on a budget.

The seminar is demonstrating ways to cook on a budget and offer samples for the audience to try.

“I went to a seminar at a kindergarten many years ago and made contact with Sophie Gray from dg,” says Christina.

“The school tries to fundraise as much as possible so the trip is free for the parents. We want our students to experience different cultures.”

Principal Graeme Lind and the international liaison teacher are also going on the trip to enhance their knowledge of Korean culture.

“We try to send one of our staff every year to allow the teachers to better understand the culture – so that when we have Korean children in our class we have a better understanding of their background,” says Christina.

The fundraising evening is on July 14. Tickets are available from the school.

It’s a hit hockey programme A jump in numbers learning to play hockey has Tauranga hockey officials confident about the game’s future.

The new Fun Sticks programme to introduce the game to five and six-year-olds is attracting 50 per cent more players this year says organiser Gill Gemming.

Gill says the organisers were re-jigging the programme to absorb the increase from 60 to 95 players.

“It’s a great sign – we’ve had such a great response to the programme that we have had to set up a satellite programme with Pillans Point to take some of the extra players.”

The Fun Sticks programme teaches basic hockey and ball skills to five and six-year-olds from 20 Tauranga schools.

It involves teams of 10 that are taught different skills and drills by secondary school players.

The programme, which was piloted in Tauranga and Hamilton in 2010, is being rolled out to 10 associations this year, then nationwide in 2012.

Gill says feedback from parents and schools is “very positive” and they liked how secondary school students were involved in teaching the game.

A Fun Sticks programme has also been started in Katikati and there is interest for another in Te Puke.

Banking on food for two decades

Tauranga Community Trust Foodbank founding volunteer Barry Steele never thought the organisation would survive long enough to celebrate its 20th anniversary.

The 81-year-old was among those who helped establish the service on June 7, 1991.

This week he is celebrating the organisation’s 20 year milestone with other volunteers.

When the Foodbank started, volunteers

would hand out 20 to 30 food parcels a week.

That number has risen to about 80 parcels every day – about 10,000 food parcels were given out in 2010.

A total of 106,000 parcels have gone to needy families during the last 20 years.

“When we first started we thought it would only go for a few years, just to get over a black spot we were going through.

“One of the governments was tightening up,” says Barry.

“Instead it’s one of the fastest growing organisations in Tauranga, thanks to the sup-

port of the community.”

The Foodbank relies on public donations to provide its $160,000 operating budget.

Chairman Don Brebner says it is great to see the organisation celebrate 20 years, but says they still struggle for funding.

“We’ve done our best to keep up with the level of need. It has just kept growing all the time.

“It was always expected to deal with the most needy and has been faithful to that goal.”

Liposculpture – excess fat The truth of the matter is that despite careful dieting and sweating it out in a gym, few people genetically have a perfect shape.

Liposuction is only done under general anaesthetic.

While it would cost less to have this procedure done under local anaesthetic, it is safer and far more comfortable to have it done under general anaesthetic in a hospital theatre. What’s goat milk got?

A Master student at University of Waikato is working on the first study of goat’s milk in New Zealand and how the milk impacts upon human health.

Nadine Huitema is looking at how diet and genetics of the goat affect the quality of goat milk produced in New Zealand.

Health benefits for humans from quality goat milk include the fat and protein content and also a number of bioactive elements, such as conjugated linoleic acid and omega 3.

“Goat milk has lower levels of alpha s1-casein and smaller chained fatty acids than cows’ milk, which makes it easier to digest,” says Nadine.

“Goat milk also provides better nutrient absorption, so it’s often used for infant formula. “There’s growing interest in Asian and western markets for such high-quality goat milk products, which makes this a really exciting area to work in.”

More people around the world drink goat milk than milk from any other animal.

Currently, 98 per cent of New Zealand’s goat milk production goes offshore – mostly in the form of milk powder.

Most of the research into goat milk has been carried out in Europe.

These goats are often a different breed to the ones in New Zealand and they are typically fed a different diet.

Nadine’s research involves testing goat milk from 15 herds to compare the milk quality over two seasons with different diets. She is also monitoring one herd which has been fed a new yeast supplement.

“It’s all about trying to enhance the ‘good stuff ’ in goat milk,” she says.

“Goat milk can’t compete with cows’ milk on volume, so knowing what functional components are different is crucial if we want to encourage increased consumption. “Scientific research into factors such as diet and genetics is an essential part of achieving this goal.”

Relief from ongoing pain A Tauranga support group is looking to aid those suffering from one of the common elements of ailments and afflictions – pain.

Tauranga Ongoing Pain Support Group is an organisation that exists to help chronic pain sufferers, their families and caregivers.

It aims to provide a group where people with chronic pain can support one another, develop friendships, share ideas and thoughts, learn about pain manage-

ment and other coping skills to help in their daily lives, in a non-judgemental and caring atmosphere.

Some people suffer on-going pain that is so chronic it governs and controls their whole lives, limits their activities, affects their social lives, restricts their recreational pursuits and limits their vocational opportunities.

The original group was formed 26 years ago by Philippa Wilson, an occupational therapist at Tauranga Hospital.

Phillipa saw a need for people with chronic pain and their families to have a supportive group to help them with their pain and adjusting to a different lifestyle – one that no longer included the same vocational, recreational and social activities as before.

The group caters for anyone 16 years plus who suffers from chronic pain of muscular-skeletal or neurological origin.

Meetings are held regularly and activities include speakers talking on a range of subjects, social outings, pot luck dinners, picnics, hot pool swims or a cup of tea and a chat.

The group’s intention is to create an environment that supplies the physical, educational and social needs of its members.

Build defences against winter flu It is winter and there will be the normal winter colds and flu around.

It is also at this time the winter flu marketers are in full cry – whether pharmaceuticals with vaccines or natural health promoters with herbs and potions. These can be any number of products, from humble vitamin C to some rather exotic herbs and potions.

There seems very little evidence that popular options like high levels of vitamin C or echinacea extracts do much to prevent flu – though they have a benefit in helping recover more quickly.

Research confirms that the number one nutrient needed for proper immune system is vitamin D. I am convinced winter flu is as much about low vitamin D levels as especially virulent bugs.

Our immune cells have docking stations for vitamin D and without adequate reserves the answer is to get as much winter sunshine as you can and to make sure your daily multi includes vitamin D. If you are at higher risk of flu, a high dose vitamin D prescription supplement is advisable. In summer, I take 1000IU daily, in autumn

and spring, 2000IU and in winter 3000IU. The second thing I would do for a good immune system is the often ignored basics. Our immune system is reliant on a vast array of vitamins, minerals and, just as importantly antioxidants. So a well formulated multi is a very good idea. Finally, I would look for a group of compounds called polysaccharides as these are excellent immune modulators – a fancy term for helping white blood cells to work more efficiently. These would include the beta glucans from reishi mushrooms and lyceum polysaccharides from Goji berries. I have added these to my antioxidant formulas for more than a decade and have no doubt they help immune response.

Advisers need to be registered with the new Financial Markets Authority (FMA) and belong to a disputes resolution scheme. This is great news for consumers as you will now be able to check online if an adviser is registered to give you advice and you will also have a dispute resolution service available

to you should you wish to make a complaint. The fines and fees for disputes and non compliance are quite substantial.

Business confidence returning The recent slide in business confidence during the last 12 months has been reversed in a survey of more than 500 provincial businesses, undertaken electronically by the Northern Region Chamber of Commerce.

A net 25 per cent of respondents believe business conditions in New Zealand will improve during the next six months, the highest such figure in the last year.

“While some signs of market confidence have returned, the underlying frailty in demand means that many businesses are still doing it tough,” says Tauranga Chamber Chief Executive Max Mason.

“We are still seeing many of the same reasons for companies feeling their own situation remaining

flat in the near future.”

Some of these reasons included inconsistency or weakness in demand, the inability to access funding and finance from banks, difficulties managing cash flow and working capita and slow-paying customers.

Other key survey findings were on the subject of confidence, a net 43 per cent of respondents believe their personal business situation will improve during the next six months, compared with 37 percent in the February survey.

Overall, 38 per cent of businesses felt the general conditions will improve during the next six months, compared with 30 per cent in February.

“While it’s good to see some degree of confidence return to local businesses and many indicators are pointing in the right direction, we are yet to see a consistency in that confidence,” says Max.

Promotion for teenage entrepreneurs A record number of teenage entrepreneurs are competing for their first business promotion next week.

The Young Innovator Awards is a competition for the best product or service idea organised by Priority One. Priority One Instep programme manager Lyn Parlane says the second annual event is a great way

for students to learn about business.

“The whole programme is about teaching students business skills which they can use in real life.

“There is quite a lot involved – they need to find a need, then find the solution for it.”

Entries are up by a third on last year, from 56 up to 75 and Lyn says the judges had commented on the high standard.

“The judges were really pleased

with the standard – and it took them quite a while to make their decisions.”

The awards are presented on Tuesday, June 21. Top entries from senior and junior students win a $1000 prize and advice on how to develop their ideas further. Delicious winter chicken Chicken Cacciatore 6 chicken thighs (skin removed) Olive oil 1/2 cup dry white wine 1 onion diced 3 bay leaves 3 crushed garlic cloves 1 Tbsp dried oregano 3 Tbsp black olives 2 carrots, diced 1 packet cherry tomatoes 1 can crushed tomatoes 1 tsp sugar Salt and pepper

Method Heat a non-stick pan – one that is transferable to the oven or have an oven dish ready to transfer into.

Pre-heat oven to 160 degrees. Brown chicken on both sides, remove from pan and set aside.

Place onions in pan and cook until soft, place the chicken back in the pan and add the rest of the ingredients. Give it a stir and transfer to the oven.

Bake covered with a lid or tin foil for 1hr 20 or until chicken is cooked through and sauce has reduced down. Serve with rice.

It’s with no surprise to hear Bill Faulkner’s whinge about the free parking on Saturday.

Helping the CBD is not a priority of his. Councillor Faulkner’s audience is the retired people of the city who also happen to have the majority of voters, promising to keep the rates down, will get you elected every time, promising progress won’t. Priority One must be pulling their hair out dealing with this lot.

They don’t have an enterprising bone in their body.

You can look after the aged and move forward at the same time. Rotorua and Taupo are perfect examples of Councils that create events to stimulate their CBD. We have an events manager. Let’s use her. Rugby World Cup is nearly upon us. What are we doing?

The facts on invasion of harbour pests I really must answer the complete claptrap propogation attempts by a few emotive exaggerators that have been writing to your paper. I am not a shooter. I have seen the swan drive in previous years. It is a necessary (if not palatable to some people) method to protect our harbour from a growing invasion of pests.

The swan numbers need to be reduced because (according to DOC, MAF, and the Tauranga Airport Authority) they damage vital seagrass, contribute to harbour pollution and are a threat to aircraft.

If you doubt it, call the airport authority, DOC and MAF. But the grizzlers won’t, because they don’t want to believe it.

I have seen all of this. Swans and geese pull massive amounts of seagrass out by the roots and after a grazing session, masses of destroyed weed floats ashore. This is decimat-

ing vital ecology.

Shot swans do not suffer any more than a chicken on a farm, a pig bred for meat or any other animal harvested for food.

Have you considered the death of chickens that are killed by being flung down a chute into the blades of a chopper? Hope you enjoy your next feed of nuggets.

If those protesters really want to get their teeth into something, watch a possum (or a ‘non target’ species such as a dog, pig, horse) die a slow and excruciating death from 1080 poisoning. Then’ll you see the swans are actually lucky to have a quick death.

The ‘road to nowhere’ syndrome Bludgeoning the ratepayer turkeys

Much has been made of the opening of Tauranga’s new Pyes Pa by-pass road. The total cost of this road was $45 million being shared between NZTA, Grasshopper (have they paid their share?) and TCC whose share is around $12.5 million.

This 4.5 km stretch of road was a completely unnecessary spend-up and at around $10,000 per metre. Taxpayers, and TCC ratepayers are entitled to ask why did this ever see the light of day? Politicians clearly believe the bigger the spend-up, the more openings you can attend and the more ‘kudos’ and acclaim you will receive.

There will be no subdivisions at the top end for many, many years and only traffic going to and from Rotorua (and then only that, using Route K) and The Lakes residents Rotorua bound will find it any use at all. Why have we built this thing?

show next week at Mills Reef. The swinging trio are currently winging their way around the country and end up in Tauranga on Thursday, June 23. The well-travelled band has been to some interesting places recently; last year they were flown to Saudi Arabia where they played their 1000th live show together for the NZ Embassy in Riyadh.

They say bands don’t really start to click on stage until they’ve done at least a thousand gigs, so these guys probably know what they’re doing by now. If you haven’t seen them, don’t miss out. If you have, then I don’t need to say anything…

In a vaguely similar vein, boogie pianist Jan Preston is winging her way home from across the Tasman for a show at Baycourt on July 17. Like the Hot Club Sandwich boys, Jan gigs almost constantly, travelling to Europe each year for a series of boogie festivals and is constantly in demand in Australia. Last year she wrote the score for her sister Gaylene Preston’s very cool little film about WW2 New Zealand, Home By Christmas, as well as recording a new album of blues and boogie originals at Tauranga’s Boatshed Studio called The Cool Boogie Woogie.

And, also at Baycourt, but in a different musical world, tickets are now on sale for the album launch show of the newly-renamed Nine Mile Stone.

This is the band that used to be called Mellow Drops and whose long-awaited second album seems to have been struggling

with getting off the ground for a couple of years now. Sometimes you just have to wait for the stars to be in alignment, and it can take a while. There is also the inconvenient habit of real life intruding on even the most strenuous attempts to make music.

So, after various babies arriving, drummers leaving, illnesses and the search for a keyboard player, the band finally settled at Tim Julian’s studio in Welcome Bay, The Colourfield.

This was rather fortuitous as Tim (who has previously added piano and organ to R&B band Brilleaux) happened to be exactly the keyboard wiz they wanted.

Now, with drummer Tim Frame firmly settled in (though they have yet to do those thousand gigs), the band has changed its name to Nine Mile Stone and pretty much completed that ‘difficult second album’, to be entitled All Roads Lead Home. I’ve heard a couple of early tracks and they definitely represent a leap forward for the band. If they can write a song that’s under six minutes, they might even be looking at some sort of commercial breakthrough.

Meanwhile, promising a music and light extravaganza, the boys have booked into the main theatre at Baycourt for a huge launch gig on July 30. Tickets are now on sale from the Baycourt box office or online from TicketDirect.

And on to the movies… …where lovers of classic film will be surprised and delighted to hear that there is a

short David Lean season coming up.

Not to be confused with David Lynch – unless you want a very surreal cinema experience – Sir David Lean represents the pinnacle of epic English filmmaking, and four of his films are showing at the Bay City Cinema in Tauranga, but only briefly. First up is the magnificent Lawrence of Arabia which has four sessions from Sunday 26 to Wednesday, June 29. I realise that it has long been available on DVD, but that doesn’t come close to the experience of a film like this on the big screen in all its three and three quarter hour (plus intermission!) glory.

Still ranked by the AFI as one of the 10 greatest films ever made, it really should be seen at a movie theatre.

Dr Zhivago, Ryan’s Daughter and A Passage to India arrive in following weeks – see the cinema for details – but, for me, Lawrence… is the one. Go Peter O’Toole!

Young cellist prodigy returns to Tauranga A young cello prodigy from Colombia is making a return appearance to Tauranga this month despite his group being struck with the flu.

Santiago Valencia, 16, is an integral part of the Cellophonics group, which cancelled its scheduled performance due to the illness of several key group members.

Yet Santiago will dazzle audiences at the Tauranga Art Gallery with a solo performance, on June 19.

Santiago is familiar to Tauranga audiences, having performed with Cellophonics last year and in a recital with pianist Katherine Austin at the art gallery three years ago –when he was 13

years old.

Returning from a successful year in 2010, during which time Santiago claimed the top prize at the Beijing International Cello Competition in October, he has continued with rave reviews for his recent performance of the Shostakovitch Concerto No1 with the Auckland Chamber Orchestra.

“We in New Zealand are very lucky to be able to witness Santiago’s talent and

development during these special years in Aotearoa.”

The works that Santiago will play at the Tauranga Art Gallery are included on his first CD recording of 20th century works for solo cello, which will be made for the Atoll record label later this year.

They include the popular Suite by the famous Spanish cellist Gaspar Cassado – a work that is filled with the exotic sounds of the Amazon region with its plentiful birdsong.

In addition, the tour de force for some music-lovers, will be Santiago’s rendition of the solo sonata by the Hungarian composer Kodaly. According to James Tennant, the audience will be amazed and possibly dancing in the aisles.

The performance begins at 2pm on Sunday, June 19. Tickets are available from the Tauranga Art Gallery.

Dir: Danny Boyle. Starring: James Franco, Kate Mara, Amber Tamblyn Many people avoided 127 Hours at the cinema and probably feel similar trepidation about watching it at home. This is, of course, the true story where a guy hacks his own arm off with a blunt penknife to escape from a fallen boulder which, admittedly, doesn’t sound like the making of a fun Saturday night. And it’s not.

But there’s a lot more here than arm-chopping. Mixing memory with imagination, and self-filmed videos, this is as much a mental journey as a physical one, anchored by a brilliant central turn from James Franco as the reckless thrill-seeker slowly coming to terms with his situation and gaining self-awareness.

I haven’t been able to make up my mind about The Green Hornet (). First time I saw it I hated it, feeling nothing but irritation for Seth Rogan’s spoilt rich boy take on the titular crime fighter. But with Michael Gondry directing, this was never going to be a regular costumed-hero romp.

I watched it again last night and was intermittently charmed. There is a lot to like, particularly Christopher (Inglourious Basterds) Waltz as the villain, and if you approach this without great expectations – it’s certainly not Iron Man – and ready for the bickering dynamic between the Hornet and “faithful sidekick” Kato then there is a lot to enjoy.

Restrepo () is a fly-on-the-wall documentary detailing the 15 month deployment of an American platoon in Afghanistan’s Korengal Valley, once described as ‘the deadliest place on earth’. It is bleak and inhospitable, and people shoot at you every day. This is not a political film; it is not about the big picture. Alternating between interviews with the young soldiers and hand-held footage of operations and everyday life, it centres on a dozen men and captures the hardship, fear, boredom, exhilaration and general misery of a rotten war. It’s powerful, messy stuff, never sensationalised and ultimately deeply depressing. This is war – it’s not fun.

Visually it takes a similar approach to Danny Boyle’s previous Slumdog Millionaire with supersaturated colours, mixed film stock, split frames, and editing that gives a constant kinetic charge, not through mere quick cutting but from expert shot choice and movement within the frame.

Just as in Slumdog Millionaire the unpalatable and unpleasant (kids being blinded, diving in excrement) are presented in such a way as to make them eminently watchable, though many will look away during the brief scenes of the actual arm-cutting.

This is filmmaking of the highest order: don’t let the subject matter deter you.

Wild Target () is the English remake of a rather good French comedy and it takes a likeable shot at things.

Certainly casting Bill Nighy – repressed neuroses in delightful form – as the solitary assassin is no bad thing, and Emily Blunt is good as the irrepressible thief he is contracted to kill, but instead ends up protecting. Rupert Grinch is along for the ride as a coincidental apprentice and Martin Freeman has brief fun as a rival assassin. But somehow the bland direction, editing and cinematography let down the script, wasting the black humour: time after time potentially good moments are undercut by mediocre execution.

The Big Bang () opens stylishly with Antonio Banderas under police interrogation. Something has happened; five people are dead. He tells the story. It’s a modern-day noir, one with more than a passing acquaintance with The Big Sleep, and has a quirky gimmick – that will elicit chuckles or irritation – in the way the script indulges in sciencey philosophical riffs and references. Banderas had been hired by a Russian boxer to find his missing stripper girlfriend. Complications ensued. Repetitive interrogation scenes break the flow but it’s good looking and diverting stuff. And it’s not often that particle physics and detective stories collide.

Convicted fraudster pleads guilty again

The woman convicted for defrauding a customer of $25,000 when she worked as a bank teller in Cherrywood, is again pleading guilty of fraud – this time for stealing $41,000.

Vicki McCaskie has plead guilty to this second fraud as she serves her home detention and community service sentence received for the first conviction in November last year. She again stole the money from a customer at the bank; a person who came forward to report the theft after learning of McCaskie’s guilt in the first fraud.

Cronin defends $7200 delegation Bay of Plenty Regional Council chairman John Cronin is defending sending an 11 person delegation to Christchurch on Monday at a cost to ratepayers of $7200.

They went to Christchurch to attend the

official welcoming of former regional council chief executive Bill Bayfield into his new job as CEO of Environment Canterbury.

The people who went were chairman John Cronin, councillors Tai Eru, Tiipene Marr and Raewyn Bennett, acting chief executive Mary-Anne Macleod, group manager technology and economic development Miles McConway, Maori policy manager Kataraina

Belshaw, and Maori policy advisor Matemoana McDonald. John says the powhiri in Christchurch was an important event that symbolised the mana Bill has with Bay of Plenty iwi and was a sign of respect to the officials and staff who were receiving him.

John says the representatives were also there to discuss national issues of common interest including water allocation and usage.

Election signs control called for

Tauranga City Council is considering changing election rules so that there are no longer a large number of kerbside election signs erected around the city. Mayor Stuart Crosby wants the council to adopt a policy similar to Rotorua’s where election signs are not permitted on public property. He says it’s time for a change because as the city grows it doesn’t look good to have these signs cluttering public spaces and providing soft targets for vandals.

Education opportunity improved

A special classroom for Western Bay of Plenty students with debilitating illnesses is part of the Northern Health School’s new facility that officially opened this week. The school has been operating in Tauranga for the past 10 years, but this is the first time the organisation has had its own facility. Associate principal Robyn Meikle says the new facility is all about ensuring children with illnesses continue to be educated and reap the benefits in life that come from that.

As of 3 June 2011 MAF has declared a Controlled Area Notice which imposes movement controls on the movement of plant materials which may be able to carry and transfer Psa. These controls restrict the movement of nursery stock – including living kiwifruit (Actinidia sp.) plants, root stock and/or budwood out of a defined zone known as the Controlled Area.

The Controlled Area notice does not restrict the movement of these products within the Controlled Area. Nor does it restrict the movements in any way of fruit or pollen.

Music is the main event St Enoch’s Presbyterian Church is about to start a ‘Mainly Music’ programme for young children.

This programme is a mixture of music, rhymes and action. It is a fun music and movement programme specifically designed for pre-schoolers. It is followed by morning tea and times for parents to meet and chat with each other.

Mainly Music is the fastest growing Christian music programme for children in Australasia. From its start in 1990, this has been making memories for parents and young children as they enjoy music and movement together.

It also provides opportunities for parents to meet others in a safe and fun environment.

Inspiring your life Come along to the Inspire Conference at Holy Trinity this weekend and listen to the gifted biblical scholar Rev Dr Tim Harris, Dean of Bishopdale Theological College in Nelson, along with Bob Fitts, international singer and songwriter.
