Professional circus performer Jason Butler has been doing a trick a day in May for the past three years.

His online trickery goes under the hashtag #trickadaymay and now has a massive following

from other aspiring and professional performers with more than 1000 videos on different tricks.

The Tauranga performer started small – balancing a peanut on his arm and throwing it into his mouth. He progressed up to six peanuts.

“It’s about creating a little bit of fun, a little bit of content, and if you can show off some cool tricks that’s even better.”

Fast track to success I’m thrilled to announce big projects that make jobs and earn lots of money.

For years developers have been complaining that red tape, whingy neighbours and tree huggers have been denying them the opportunity to do what any opportunistic person would consider opportune.

Suddenly, the Government agrees. It has waved its magic wand across the Resource Management Act and made public consultation disappear for certain shovel-ready projects. Shazam!

So, for two years only, clever people like me, with great ideas but no popularity whatsoever, have the unique opportunity to flip the bird at ordinary people with ordinary opinions.

What’s good for you

My list of think big projects for the Bay of Plenty is neatly packaged in a folder labelled ‘Bite Me’ and a sub heading ‘What was that? Sorry, I can’t hear you, you’re breaking up’.

First on the list is, of course a gondola up the Mount with a fabulous casino at the top. Well, not right on the top because that would be culturally offensive. That bit just down from the top will do.

Secondly, while we are over that way, I would like to see Leisure Island rebuilt.

This was the sort of thing you used to be able to build before we started being all sensitive and it was cool.

And why did we stop building tall buildings over that way. The bigger the better I say. If you are not casting long, glorious shadows on the beach, you’re doing something wrong.

Oh yes! And what was that thing they used to do where they dropped all the ping pong balls into the water at Main Beach and 20,000 people clamoured all over each other to get to the prizes inside?

Loads of fun.

Now everybody knows the Tauranga CBD is badly designed – there’s poor connection to the water and nobody really knows which bit is the ‘central’ part of the business district.

I feel like we should take away the confusion and simply extend the port all the way to the Matapihi Bridge. There will be no confusion then and Wharf St will actually make sense.

The green eyed monster

I have oodles of ideas north and south of the city as well which are shovel ready and so unpopular that they would not normally get approved. I’m abundantly certain that the silent majority would like to see these things, I’m absolutely sure of it.

Firstly, why are we mucking around with

small and mid-sized Kiwifruit installations.

You have to literally drive right past to even see them. It lacks ambition.

No, what we need is the London Eye of kiwifruit – 100 metres tall and revolving slowly, with kiwifruit cabins dangling at regular intervals. We’ll give it a cool name, like ‘The Sphincter’ and people will flock to it in droves.

I’ve got a bunch of other ideas but there is really no need to discuss them in public.

The beautiful irony of this whole RMA conversation is that it is happening at the same time our Minister of Tourism has asked the relevant experts to ‘rethink’ tourism with a focus on sustainability.

Here are Kelvin’s exact words: “We have an opportunity to rethink the entire way we approach tourism to ensure that it will make New Zealand a more sustainable place, enrich the lives of all our people and deliver a sector which is financially selfsustaining in the longer term.”

Air Force trains in Tauranga

With a lot of air travel halted planes aren’t a common sight over Tauranga’s skies at the moment.

On Wednesday though, flight enthusiasts were treated to the Royal New Zealand Air Force Boeing 757 gracing our skies.

Tauranga Airport manager Ray Dumble says the air force had been doing a standard training flight that happens about three to four times a month.

“They do what’s called an interim approach, so they come overhead at 3000 or 5000 feet do their interim approach procedure, which is simulating flying in clouds and come down to the missed approach point and off they go.”

A New Zealand Defence Force spokesperson says the air force Boeing 757 has been carrying out training flights around the North Island this week.

Cane named captain

New All Blacks captain Sam Cane says he has no plans to change the way he does things.

The 28-year-old Chiefs loose forward takes over from Kieran Read who stepped down following last year’s World Cup to take up a contract in Japan.

Crusaders lock Sam Whitelock had been seen as the likely successor to Read but the new All Blacks coach has opted to go with Cane.

Cane has played 68 tests for the All Blacks - three as captain - but it’s uncertain whether he will get to lead the side this year amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Cane says it’s a “massive honour” to be given the captaincy.

Flu vaccine record

More than 1.35 million vaccines have been distributed to GP’s, pharmacists etc.

The Ministry of Health says this is more than has ever been distributed in an entire flu season in New Zealand before. Director-General of Health Dr Ashley Bloomfield says it was really important to prioritise vulnerable groups early on.

He says healthy people don’t need to worry – there is very low risk of flu at the moment.

On Monday afternoon, Maketu photographer Andy Belcher noticed huge storm clouds racing across the sky towards him. The rain and thunder had already blasted its way over Tauranga.

“It was coming quite quickly towards us. I was so amazed at it and only just captured it in time,” says Andy.

“It was very difficult to photograph and is about five photos put together.”

He posted the image to the Maketu Facebook page where it has received hundreds of likes and comments. The photograph has sparked people’s thoughts about how the Alert Level 4 Lockdown has been a strategy for the country to avoid the potentially wide-spread devastating impact of COVID-19.

“Many had said that they’d never seen anything like that coming before across Maketu. Some have said to me that this is what lockdown is all about.”

Andy often photographs local scenes and has been appreciating the fine weather.

“When we first started on Level 4 lockdown, the weather was perfect. I tried to absorb everything around me and suddenly came to the realisation that there was no noise. There was no traffic, people, boats or aeroplanes.”

It has been the perfect time for Andy to fly his drone and take photos of the Maketu area. “I haven’t really had to go outside my bubble to do it.” The brief storm dropped about 8mm of rain in Tauranga. Prints of this photo are available on request.

Know your tenancy rights during COVID-19 Tenants who are unsure of their rights during the COVID-19 pandemic are being urged to contact the Citizens Advice Bureau.

Tauranga Bureau manager Kim Saunders says they have received many enquiries on a range of issues.

“We had tenants who suddenly have no income but still have to pay rent and all of their other expenses. We have also heard about flatting situations where it seemed impossible to remove an unwanted flatmate during the lockdown.”

Government measures to help renters

include a rent increase freeze that is in place until late September, and a ban on tenancy terminations (except where the tenant agrees to it) that is in place until late June.

“In many cases though, it’s up to the tenant and their landlord to discuss the issue in good faith.”

Kim says it is worth checking whether you are eligible for an accommodation supplement from Work and Income if your income has dropped. Tenancy law does not cover flatmates whose names are not on the tenancy agreement, private boarders, or

Queues likely as transfer station reopens Tauranga City Council transfer stations are open for general rubbish and green waste only.

The Te Maunga and Maleme Street transfer stations are now open but recycling will not be accepted until the country reaches Alert Level 2.

Council general manager, infrastructure Nic Johansson says the council is pleased to be able to provide this service again to the public.

“We know many people have been

asking us to open. With a traffic management plan and a robust mechanism for contact tracing in place, we can now do so, safely and responsibly.

“We appreciate that many people have rubbish and garden waste to dispose of and we appreciate everyone’s patience. Our priority has been to ensure that we can keep the wider community safe during lockdown.”

While re-starting the service, delays are anticipated, the council says.

Hospice calls for volunteers Fundraising for Waipuna Hospice has taken a major hit over the last six weeks, with the Hospice Shop unable to trade.

It will be up and running again in Alert Level 2, but needs volunteers to prepare and run the shop.

“Volunteers are how we turn second-hand goods into first-class care,” says Waipuna Hospice retail manager James Turner.

“The challenge is that our shops rely almost entirely on older community members to run, so we are limited in the number of our volunteers who are available because of the potential risks to their health.

“Therefore, we can’t operate at the same capacity without new volunteers,” Volunteers are working within work bubbles, swapping over summer stock with winter clothing.

“We are lucky that we are between seasons, as it means we still have a stockpile of clothes to open with despite clothing donations not being permitted under Alert Level 3.”

Ideas to shape the future of Te Papa

Changing the city plan to enable more housing choice Right now, the rules in place for residential land in the Tauranga City Plan make it hard for people to build more compact types of homes like duplexes and apartments. This means we’re not using land as effectively as possible to accommodate our growth, and that people don’t have much choice in the type and size of homes they can live in.

So we’re proposing to change the city plan to make it easier for people to build – if they want to – duplexes and terraced housing in suburban areas across the city, and apartments in more central areas like Te Papa, to better suit their needs.

What should these types of homes look like, and how can they enhance the neighbourhood? Tell us what you think of our proposed city plan rules and urban design guidelines.

We are working on a blueprint for growth within the area from Greerton to the city centre, called the Te Papa peninsula. This blueprint aims to provide a 30-year plan for greater housing choice, safe and efficient transport options, local amenities and infrastructure needed to support healthy and connected neighbourhoods and communities.

The plan will assist in more efficient use of resources, including the way we move around, where and how we live, work and play. In turn, this will reduce costs to the community and individuals, as well as providing potential for better use of time and healthier living.

These ideas and those that you add, will assist in decision-making on what we do and when we do it over the next 30 years.

Now we are proposing a set of ideas, potential projects and other initiatives for the whole of Te Papa, the city centre, Gate Pa, Merivale and Greerton.

Waipuna Hospice’s six charity shops will be fully COVID-19 compliant, with measures including appropriate PPE for volunteers and plastic screens at the counter. Social distancing and contact tracing practices will still be adhered to.

“There is also a process where all donations have to be quarantined for 72 hours and decontaminated, so we need more volunteers than usual.”

Waipuna Hospice’s 2018-2019 annual report shows $3.8 million was earned through its charity shops and volunteers donated 74,672 hours.

“Money from shop sales makes up around 35 per cent of our income, which is a huge bulk of it.

“We always receive fantastic support from the community, which has helped us provide those at the end of their life with the best care possible.

“We use every dollar.”

Public places still closed

Tauranga student wins

People are being reminded that public access to Mauao and Matapihi Bridge is closed under Alert Level 3 because of the requirement for physical distancing of two metres.

Western zone civil defence controller Eric Newman encourages everyone to stay safe and practice physical distancing.

This means Mauao, including the base track, is still closed as it is not possible for people to safely pass others while maintaining safe physical distancing of two metres.

Turning 18 during a national lockdown hasn’t stopped Ngariki Tamainu from taking on other challenges.

On April 17, the Tauranga Girls’ College Year 13 student won a regional speech competition on race relations in New Zealand, earning herself a place in the national semi-finals.

“I couldn’t believe it,” says Ngariki after being told she had won.

Ngariki says the speech required overcoming the challenge of public speaking.

“I didn’t think I’d go forward with my speech. I thought I’d write it but not actually present it, but as I started writing I felt I needed to be heard.”

The NZ Race Unity Speech regional competition, with the topic ‘Titiro whakamuri, kia anga whakamua – to face the future, look to the past’ required a novel approach for judging this year.

Originally planned to be held at the St George Church in Gate Pa, each participant had to compete in front of a camera as the regional speech

competition was held online to comply with COVID-19 restrictions.

“We had been preparing for a while, email-wise,” says Ngariki. “On the night all the judges and speakers were together on Zoom.”

The Race Unity Speech Awards, which have been held annually since 2001, provide opportunity for Year 11, 12 and 13 students to grow an understanding of race relation issues in New Zealand and share their ideas on how to promote unity.

The Race Unity Speech Awards are coordinated by the New Zealand Baha’i Community with generous support and sponsorship from the New Zealand Police, the New Zealand Human Rights Commission, Manukau Institute of Technology, the Maori Language Commission and the Office of Ethnic Communities, Multicultural New Zealand: Federation of Multicultural Councils, Studio Marque, Speech New Zealand and the Hedi Moani Charitable Trust.

The national semi-finals and finals will also be held online, during Youth Week from May 11-17.

A whim gone global

Katikati Digital Hub gains funding boost Katikati Hub is one of five regional digital hubs included in the $2 million funding announced by the Minister.

Western Bay Mayor Garry Webber is delighted the Hub’s been granted funding and says it’s proof of the veracity of the business case put forward by Council and Priority One for a regional digital hub.

“This Hub will be a fantastic boost to the Katikati community and will open new opportunities for local businesses, community groups, entrepreneurs, students and individuals.

Three years ago, professional circus performer Jason decided he needed a challenge to do while he was learning how to use hashtags.

“During February, there’s a challenge called #handstandfeb, which is done through a lot of the circus and handstand communities,” says Jason.

The Tauranga performer then created a #multiskillmarch challenge but that was a flop.

When May rolled around #trickadaymay was born.

“In the first year we had maybe 15 people involved from around New Zealand and Australia.”

The following year, the idea exploded across social media, on Facebook and Instagram.

“Last year we had a couple of guys from Cirque du Soleil joining in and a guy from Russia.”

This year even more have got involved.

“There are people from Uganda, Dallas, Chicago, New Jersey, Sweden, Mexico.

The enduring joy of ice-cream Polar Dessert Bar is the latest to be featured in the No Place Like Home series, sponsored

by Tourism Bay of Plenty.

Ian and Pam White, the couple behind Polar Dessert Bar, have been bringing decadent and fun treats to Mount Maunganui’s main street for four years. But their love affair with New Zealand and the Bay stretches back much longer.

Originally from the UK, Ian and Pam have been in the hospitality sector for 30 years, previously owning their own restaurant and catering businesses. But it was New Zealand they came to for their holidays, returning every year for 20 years and travelling around the country.

Finally, in 2014 they made the move permanent, bringing their vast hospitality experience with them.

But they needed a new idea.

“We spent six months wandering up and down the

beach, thinking about what we were going to do with ourselves,” said Ian. Ian and Pam were running Yo & Co (on Prince Avenue in Mount Maunganui) which offers frozen yoghurt treats but saw an opportunity for a latenight trade on the main street.

The result was Polar Dessert bar and a menu of “fun, joyful big eats” including bubble waffles and cold-plate ice-cream.

“Coming to Polar is about having fun. There’s a real buzz and positive vibe. There’s music going and people can see their dessert being made right in front of them. The cold-plate ice-cream gets bashed together and rolled at the end – it’s a bit of theatre with your dessert. We see a lot of smiles.”

But social distancing has made creating that experience difficult, Ian said.

“We have to be super careful about how we manage everything now. But we hope we can get back to creating that buzz again in a safe way.”

The eatery is operating under Alert Level 3 with both delivery and contactless pick up options.

But Ian says, if people can, their business greatly appreciates dealing directly with locals.

“We’ve got an incredible sense of community. Kiwis are a tight knit bunch; they will help you out. Right now, businesses like ours are fighting for our survival. If locals want to

support us, I think every operator would say the same – take the time to write a review, share a photo and, if you can, please pick up your order rather than using a delivery service.

shackled to a debt limit of no more than 250 per cent of our revenue. This could force us to cut the works budget down to as low as $10m right at the time when our community is crying out for jobs; worsening the recession locally.

In my view, putting rates up to cover the shortfall isn’t an option. We can’t add to the pain households and businesses are feeling. In the worst economic event since the great depression we need to be bold. Now is the time to borrow to keep our local economy going.

Increasing debt is prudent because both short and long-term interest rates are the lowest they have been in living memory. It’s not just TCC that needs to step up; Regional Council holds $2 billion in assets, largely through its shareholding in the Port of Tauranga.

If the worst economic forecasts in 100 years doesn’t justify leveraging that investment to create jobs when will it ever?

Te Puna blues go global Derek Jacomb the untroubled troubadour of Te Puna has filmed a different song every day for 42 days, wearing a new hat and shirt for each video.

The result is now viewable on YouTube.

“I had a lot of hats because of performing in the Tauranga Jazz Festivals,” says Derek who is a member of the popular local band Kokomo.

“Once I started, it was hard to stop.

I went into lockdown a couple of days early because my son returned from Australia, and we isolated together.

“The idea was that while we were in isolation, he would film me singing one song a day, wearing a different hat and shirt each time. About half the songs are originals, a quarter of them are old blues and a quarter have been requests from people.”

The song-meister’s videos have garnered favourable responses on Facebook. “People were saying really nice things and I was getting lots of friendly messages, so we kept going. I

was going to stop after Level 4, but all the people that were listening were still in lockdown.

“I’m still in lockdown too, so while there’s still a few people out there enjoying it, we’ll keep going.”

Finding more hats and shirts that he hasn’t previously filmed could be a mission as he continues.

He also hasn’t shaved during the whole lockdown period.

“I thought it would be interesting to see my beard change over time, although it’s now looking a bit of a mess and getting a bit uncomfortable.”

This impressive archive of songs is likely to keep growing as Derek continues taking requests from all over the world.

For some, Levels 3 and 4 have been stressful, scary and confusing.

Others have taken a compulsory break from their day-to-day lives and used the time to embark upon new hobbies or exercise regimes. Others in our community have stepped up on a voluntary basis, helping out with shopping and errands for the elderly and vulnerable people in our society, delivering food and medication to those who can’t leave their homes. I’ve felt great pride knowing that

the people of the Bay of Plenty are so caring and supportive of each other under such difficult circumstances.

Our country’s lockdown has left some industries bereft of customers; I fear we will see many small businesses close down unless special aid is targeted towards helping them when our export markets are not buying and overseas visitors are not coming. I have received many requests for help from employers having difficulty accessing wage subsidies due to the massive queue of applications MSD are dealing with. It’s great this support was rolled out so quickly after Level 4 commenced, which allowed employers to keep paying staff salaries despite having to close. Now employers are asking for help to pay other outgoings...

Kiwifruit company gets behind Pacific island’s cyclone rebuild A Bay of Plenty charity is striving to help a cycloneravaged island in Vanuatu amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Tropical Cyclone Harold caused widespread destruction across the Pacific in April.

Photos paint a grim reality for many islands and communities in Northern Vanuatu - some medical centres have been left in ruins and many have been left without food relying on aid packages.

Te Puke-based charity Fruit of the Pacific is working directly with kiwifruit seasonal workers from Vanuatu to deploy a sawmill to one of the affected northern islands: Malo.

Vanuatu currently has no reported cases of COVID-19. But Fruit of the Pacific has found a way to lend a hand from afar.

They are getting behind The Mill for Malo project.

This is led by an EastPack

The Mill for Malo team will be milling fallen timber and providing that free of charge to the communities so they can rebuild schools, kindergartens, medical clinics, churches and market places.

Te Puke-based companies Baygold and EastPack, as well as their RSE staff from Vanuatu, were quick to partner with the project.

“They have provided donations supporting the first three weeks of milling costs, a full repairs and maintenance kit as well as the reconnaissance trip for Joe to identify communities and rebuild projects,” says Kylie.

The sawmill team will start work this week on two local schools on the west coast of Malo.

One of those schools is Najariwelu School. The classrooms were destroyed by the tropical cyclone, one of them being completely flattened.

But now the school’s leadership team have plans to rebuild these two destroyed classrooms, three school auxiliary rooms and one teacher’s house. This week, the Mill for Malo team milled and delivered more than 280 lineal metres of wood to begin the rebuild of this school.

The final test results from more than 250 people tested for COVID-19 in Te Puke have now all returned negative.

Dr Joe Bourne, who is in charge of the Bay of Plenty DHB’s community-based health services response, says it is a pleasing outcome.

The final four results follow 261 negative test results from the seasonal workers who were tested.

The total of 265 people tested were ‘casual contacts’ of a recent confirmed case of COVID-19 in an accommodation provider.

The DHB set up a temporary assessment clinic within the accommodation specifically to test the people staying there. Dr Bourne says co-operation and collaboration between the DHB Community Based Assessment Centre teams and the Te Puke community meant they were able to deliver an efficient assessment process.

"We had great collaboration with the kiwifruit industry to support the workers and that has given a

result that should give the community confidence."

The testing was a precautionary measure only.

The people tested were considered at low risk of infection because they had not been close contacts of the affected staff member.

However, in line with the Ministry of Health’s surveillance programme to determine if there is any community spread, these people were tested.

All close contacts of the person who tested positive have been tested and all their results were also negative.

Bay of Plenty DHB incident management team incident controller Bronwyn Anstis says it is important we continue our vigilance at Alert Level 3 and that anyone who has symptoms such as a cough, sore throat, runny nose or fever should ring Healthline, visit their GP/family doctor or a CBAC. More surveillance testing is likely to occur over the coming weeks.

This will be done under the guidance of the Ministry of Health and Toi Te Ora Public Health.

Getting your fast food fix - safely Flocks of people around the Bay of Plenty had a hankering for their favourite fast food when the country went to Level 3 lockdown, as was evident in the long drive through queues snaking out of Maccas, K-Fry and more.

But there are also those out there who may not know how takeaways work in this new world we find ourselves in and who are concerned about getting takeaway food that is safe.

We’ve outlined a few ways that both big chains and small, family-run takeout stores are taking extra precautions to keep themselves and their patrons safe.

If you still need to pay, some places will have an EFTPOS machine for you to pay with. You can then collect your food and return to your car or home to enjoy your meal.

Contactless delivery

There are a few places that are offering their own delivery services as well as food delivery companies such as Uber Eats if you are unable to go out and collect food yourself or if you prefer to stay in.

These typically work with online ordering and payments.

Typically, once your order is placed and paid for, your food will be prepared and delivered to you. Many places will contact you to let you know that your food has arrived and leave it somewhere convenient for you to collect – your front steps for example.

Remember, the two metre distancing rule still applies to food delivery.

Also keep in mind that most places charge an additional fee for food delivery.

Contactless pickup

Many places are now offering ‘contactless pickup’ options when it comes to getting food on the go.

This works similarly to ordering and picking up a pizza in pre-Alert-Level times.

Typically, you will place your order online and be told when it will be ready for collection. When the time is right, drive to your food and alert the store that you are there – most stores will have a contact number for you to call.

If you’ve paid online already, your food should be put on a table at the front of the store and you will be invited in to pick it up and leave.

Classic Builders director Matt Lagerberg – who heads one of the country’s largest home building companies – says being given the green light to return to work under New Zealand’s COVID-19 Level 3 structure has been a great relief.

“It has been a tough time for everyone in the construction industry – and others too – with income streams at a stand-still and outgoings to service.

“Our staff are geared up, ready and itching to go. They’re keen to get back out there and get the wheels turning,” says Matt, who has a staff of 260 covering the Bay of Plenty, Auckland, Northland, Christchurch, Queenstown, Wellington and Waikato.

The fact the construction industry is back at work comes with many positive downstream effects, says Matt.

“It’s great for the supply chain and breathes life into many small and medium-sized businesses.

Bricklayers, labourers, electricians, plumbers, roofers, tilers, those involved in earthworks and drainage and product suppliers… all represent subcontractors and suppliers relieved to be back at work.”

Classic Builders Tauranga regional manager Nathan Watkins says members of his team of 38 people – covering the Western Bay of Plenty – had been on site over previous days checking everything was in place so they could “hit the ground running”.

“The construction industry pumped more money into Tauranga and the WBOP’s economy than any other

Matt says a COVID-19 vaccine and the re-opening of borders will spell great things for New Zealand.

Home & It’s the Holy Grail of kumara Jeremy Thompson was digging his vegetables up last week when he struck the big time.

Amongst his generous crop of kumara was a whopper – a massive 4.6kg specimen.

The Otumoetai man says he’s a keen gardener but “not an expert gardener” by any means.

‘JT’, as he is known to his fishing mates, generally sticks to tomatoes, lettuces, green beans and asparagus but this season he bucked the trend, his son Joel Thompson says.

Jeremy says it is the first time he has grown kumara and even that was quite by chance. They are not a common item at garden stores but he spied some bulbs for sale one day and grabbed them.

“Then I thought: ‘where am I going to plant them?’”

He decided on a small patch of ground behind the shed, planted them and then largely left them to it, albeit with a couple of “swills” of potato fertiliser and some regular watering.

When he dug up the bed last week he was astounded to find some larger than normal kumara, with one massive tuba requiring some additional excavation.

"At first I thought it was just a bunch of closely grown kumara and I was astonished to see it was one massive tuba," Jeremy says.

He is looking forward to chipping his giant kumara and eating it with a side of pan fried snapper with his wife and grandchildren.

But first it needs to be dried out, which could take some time.

“We have been eating the little brothers and they have been beautiful.”

Joel Googled ‘big kumara’ and couldn’t find any mention of a bigger one grown in New Zealand in recent times.

Havelock North man Peter Flanders

was featured in his local newspaper back in 2015 with a 3kg kumara and there are reports of a big one in Rotorua this season but no mention of weight.

It’s a wee way off the world record though, as the Guinness Book of Records has the heaviest known sweet potato at a massive 37kg.

Nobody really knows why the big ones pop up but there are a few theories. One is that they are actually several kumara that have fused together.

The second is that it is a genetic throwback to a South American variety that used to grow huge.

Either way, Jeremy is pretty keen to continue his beginner’s luck next season.

He might even have finished eating the 100 or so generously sized kumara he dug up this year.

Flowering alyssum can help to protect brassica crops A common garden plant may hold the key to protecting brassica crops – such as broccoli and cauliflower – from the wheat bug, Nysius huttoni, a damaging pest.

In a paper just published in the journal Agricultural and Forest Entomology, Sundar Tiwari, who has just completed his PhD through the Bio-Protection Research Centre, outlines his research into protecting brassica seedlings from the wheat bug.

It shows that alyssum (Lobularia maritima L. Desvaux cv. Benthamii White) planted around the perimeter of a brassica field protects the seedlings by ‘trapping’ wheat bugs.

Trap cropping is a form of companion planting, using one plant to keep insect pests away from nearby plants. It can help to reduce the need for insecticide.

Brassicas are not just important horticultural crops; many farmers also plant fields of brassicas as stock feed. The wheat bug is a major pest of brassica seedlings and is usually controlled by treating seeds with neonicotinoids and spraying with

chlorpyrifos and pyrethroid insecticides.

"These practices can generate severe external costs, including to human health, the environment and biodiversity," Dr Tiwari and his co-authors wrote.

"Trap cropping is one alternative option to protect brassica seedlings from N. huttoni."

For his PhD research, Dr Tiwari tested alyssum, as well as wheat (Triticum aestivum L. cv. Morph), coriander (Coriandrum sativum L.cv. Santo) and clover (Trifolium repens L. cv. Nomad), for their ability to

draw the wheat bug away from brassica crops.

While coriander and clover did not perform well, alyssum and, to a lesser extent, alyssum and wheat together did.

"To significantly reduce wheat bugs in brassica fields, first establish alyssum at its flowering stage or alyssum plus wheat at its seed-ripening stage around the perimeter of the brassica field," Dr Tiwari says.

"This can prevent wheat bugs from migrating from outside the field into the brassica crop."

Once the bugs are established in the trap crop and the brassica seedlings have matured past their vulnerable stage, the trap crops can either be removed (along with the wheat bugs) or treated with suitable insecticide, but making sure to not taint the brassica crop.

"Such a trap-cropping protocol potentially reduces pesticide use in brassicas and can also deliver multiple ecosystem services such as biological control of insect pests," Dr Tiwari says.

Home transfers from the start of 2020 to mid-March showed a pattern similar to that of the same period in 2019. The COVID19 lockdown was announced on Monday, March, 23 and came into effect at 11.59pm on Wednesday, March 25 2020, immediately impacting home transfers.

"Home transfers picked up just before the COVID-19 lockdown

as it appears that parties brought forward transfers," acting property statistics manager Dave Adair says.

"The number of home transfers then fell away significantly in the first half of April, while the lockdown was in place."

There were 774 home transfers on Friday, March 27, down 1263 (62 per cent) compared with the equivalent Friday in 2019.

Property transfers do not occur on Sundays and only occasionally on Saturdays. A transfer is not the same as a sale. While Level 3 opens more doors for people to shop and enjoy certain services, there are still rules in place to continue to stop the spread of COVID-19 and keep ourselves safe.

Certain advice hasn’t changed from Level 4 to Level 3 – wash your hands regularly with soap and water or cleanse with hand sanitiser, stay at home and self-isolate if you are sick, cough or sneeze into a tissue or your elbow and wash or sanitise your hands, and clean surfaces regularly.

There are still some travel restrictions under Level 3, including no unnecessary travel. If people went into lockdown in the wrong place, they are allowed to move once and in one direction to get where they need to be.

Still art in isolation I have a strange tale for you today.

It involves the notion of being an artist and, I guess, that age-old question: what is art?

I find the whole ‘being an artist’ question quite an interesting one, though I don't mean the word ‘artist’ here as in someone who paints a nice watercolour of the Mount.

Anyone doing that is certainly an artist in the sense of painting something – and watercolours are notoriously more difficult than many imagine – but not necessarily in the more esoteric meaning of being a person who creates art.

Writers, musicians, painters and even chefs are called this.

Artists. Even that orange-haired pathological liar currently helping destroy America had the nerve to call his fictional ghost-written apology of a biography The Art Of The Deal. Hmmm... Well, he can call it art but it's not exactly Michaelangelo.

It's a label that is hard to pin down, one that some folk happily embrace, one that others shy away from, usually out of some sort of embarrassment.

It's long interested me that the great Richard O'Brien, who of all the Bay's songwriters would most likely have a claim to be ‘an artist’, always declines the description.

Instead, he claims to be ‘craftsman’, a humble artisan toiling at his craft.

I see that the environment court has set up the reserves around Motiti. At least they’ve left the area around Motiti itself open. I guess it’d be cutting off your nose to spite your face if the applicants hadn’t. The joke of it is that reserves don’t really make much difference to the fish population. Fish schools move with the currents, following the food chain, primarily krill and phytoplankton. They don’t go: oh look, a new reserve we’ll live here forever and never move…

There’s a few more resident fish, and it’s good for the kina and shellfish. Ask DOC what differences they’ve seen in the reserve on the North side of Tuhua Island in the last 20+ years. Reserves are best when they’re in areas easily accessed and they help to increase the general population’s appreciation of the ocean’s biodiversity e.g Goat Island. So I guess that 3 reserves 10 to 20 km offshore is better than 40+k away.

We went into Lockdown Level 4; did we really need such control? Aussie have only operated at Level 3 and have had a better survival rate than New Zealand, except for Victoria who have had Level 4 and have taken a lot of criticism from doing so and guess what, another Labour government!

Our government was slow on the uptake right at the beginning and then threw NZ into Level 4 lockdown!

Why did the government not, before this, just block our external border and stop foreigners coming on planes to our shores? It is they who have brought the virus in here. I state the obvious!

Now our economy is in tatters and don’t kid yourself Kiwis, it will take at least five years to climb out of this economic crisis!

The effect of cannabis With the Government having prepared the information for the proposed law reform of the use of cannabis (also named marijuana, hashish or weed) for the referendum which we will vote on in the upcoming election, it is important we are fully informed before we vote.

Having worked with one of New Zealand’s most skilled drug counsellors, Trevor Grice, I learnt how ignorant people are about this drug and its impact on the human brain in particular.

I would beg all of us to become as well informed on this drug.

It is a nonsense to suggest that it is harmless, as it stores in the user’s brain, ovaries and testes for a significant period of time. Unlike alcohol which flushes through the body, through the liver - one ounce, one hour. Our livers cannot work any faster than that, which is why babies can be born with fetal alcohol syndrome.

We all know that the abuse of alcohol is very destructive.

However, cannabis is the stupefying drug and it impacts far longer in one’s body, takes away a young person’s ability to learn and the one thing we all owe our children is a decent start in life. More to come.

Making sacrifices

Interesting that almost everyone else has accepted the need for a reduction in salaries and a scaling back of future plans etc apart from every council in New Zealand. What is it in the genetics of councillors that makes them so greedy, unsympathetic, careless with our money, don’t give a damn for people’s unfortunate circumstances etc etc.

Let’s hope the current mob that fill council seats will agree to the referendum request asked of them by a group of half a dozen or so organisations that are based in the Tauranga area.

Tauranga ratepayers have had enough of being ripped off by a succession of reckless, fiscally inept councils over the last 16 or so years.

The TCC needs to sharpen its collective pencil and look at what we can do without over the next ten years and look at the essentials only like water supply, sewage and waste and of course roading.

New Zealand will not be like it was six weeks ago for many a long year - maybe a generation. So come on TCC show fiscally capable you have heart and prove to us that you are fi of running a council energetically and intelligently by not inflicting a rate increase.

New Zealand can be proud New Zealand has left the full lockdown of Alert Level 4 behind. Hooray! If everyone in our team of five million continues to be careful and work within the rules, at every Alert Level from 4-1, hopefully we will never see that level of restriction again.

As the Prime Minister and health officials have said, this is a ‘marathon not a sprint’.

As we go into this weekend still at Alert Level 3 we must remain resolute and disciplined. Last weekend the Bay of Plenty region had one of the highest numbers of Level 3 breaches in the country. We don’t want to see a repeat of this.

We must not squander the amazing results we have achieved so far, so please stay faithful to your bubble, even if you expanded it a little.

Work from home if you can and practise physical distancing and other safety precautions if you’re back at work. Keep your exercise safe and local. And, most importantly, take care.

Level 3 has meant the economy has started to open up again. Important sectors like construction and forestry are operating once more. Many of the Government’s big infrastructure projects are on the move. Online retail is up and running again in all sectors.

Locally our catch cry is: ‘stay local, shop local’ - and support our local businesses as they start operating again. They need us more than ever right now. So, if you feel a hankering for a scone, a coffee or a new pair of pants, please don’t be shy. Give your favourite shop a call or head to their website and see if they can help you out. A private cremation has been held. He was remembered around the world via an internet memorial service on the 22nd of April.

Born in Eindhoven, Holland on 21st of March,1930 to Jan & Harmina.

He is now reunited with his beloved wife Els, three older brothers, two younger sisters and his son Paul.

In memory he lives on in the hearts of his children Ingrid and Richard, his grandchildren Nick, Adam, Holly, Alannah, Regan and Jesse.
