Maine food and farMs

It’s a win-win-win for the farmer, the consumer and the community. The farmer gets guaranteed buyers, shareholders get a great price on a season’s worth of produce and local land is preserved as a working farm. Because shareholders receive whatever is in season, you may be introduced to foods you would not otherwise buy. Many CSAs provide recipes and suggestions on how to prepare the items delivered each week as well as opportunities to join in the fun at the farm. Visit www.mofga.org.

Tips for apartment renters If you rent your home or apartment, you may think that you have less control over how green your home is. But homeowners aren’t the only ones who can make eco-friendly changes to their living spaces. Renters have lots of options to consider.

Location

Grow your own

Where to live? If you’re apartment hunting, look for a home within walking or bicycling distance of the places you frequent, and keep an eye out for energy efficient heating systems and effective insulation.

Green thumb? Look for an apartment with lots of natural light or an outdoor space for growing plants and vegetables. Or you can find a local community garden, and support your local farmer by signing up for a community supported agriculture share or shopping at the farmer’s market.

Simple energy savers Looking for low-cost ways to conserve energy? Keep your water heater thermostat at 120 degrees, apply weather stripping to drafty doors and windows, replace incandescent light bulbs with CFLs or LEDs, install low-flow showerheads and faucet aerators and unplug your appliances while you’re not using them.

Reduce waste Going for zero waste? Bring your own bag and water bottle wherever you go. Don’t collect unnecessary items or packaging. Recycle and try your hand at composting with a small outdoor bin or worm bin in your kitchen. An outdoor bin is a great way to get other renters from your building involved.

30 www.TheSunriseGuide.com

Suggest improvements Why not ask? Talk to your property owner if you have ideas for energy efficiency upgrades that will offer a return on his or her investment. There are tax incentives available through Efficiency Maine for buildings with one to four units, up to a maximum of three stories (up to $3,000 per unit), and improvements can help property owners retain tenants, attract new ones and increase the value of their property.

Mercury products your health, and Maine’s environment Mercury is a naturally occurring heavy metal that has been used in common household products including thermostats, thermometers and fluorescent lamps. Mercury is released into the air when these products are broken or disposed of in landfills and incinerators. Exposure to mercury slows fetal and child development, impacts the central nervous system, impairs brain function and causes loss of memory and muscle control, tremors and kidney disease. Mercury shows up in dangerous levels in fish at the top of the food chain. Bass, perch, pickerel, trout and salmon have all shown high levels of mercury, as have the eagles and loons that feed on them. We can all help prevent mercury pollution by recycling products that contain mercury.

Recycle mercurycontaining products Products containing mercury are labeled with the “Hg” symbol. Household thermostats Renovating or upgrading to a programmable thermostat? Receive a $5 in-store coupon when you recycle your old mer-

cury thermostat at participating retailers, or a $5 check through a mail-in program. Find out how at www.maine.gov/dep/ rwm/mercury/hgthermo.htm.

Recycle rechargeable batteries and cell phones

These products also contain toxic metals. Find a drop-off site for free recycling near you at www.call2recycle.org.

Compact Fluorescent Lightbulbs (CFLs) CFLs are a great way to reduce electricity use, but they contain small amounts of mercury. Bring CFLs to participating Maine retailers for free recycling. Find them at www.mainedep.com. Other mercury products You can recycle other fluorescent lamps, fever thermometers and mercury products at your local solid waste facilities and household hazardous waste collection sites. The Environmental Depot in Lewiston (www.envdepot.com) and Portland’s Riverside Recycling Center (www.recycling. portlandmaine.gov) accept household mercury products from any Maine resident. Visit their websites to learn more.

Take a Quiz on Groundwater What’s underground and used daily by more than half the people of Maine? If you answered “groundwater,” you’re right! As individuals, we can make choices that will protect our groundwater resources from pollution and overuse. Since we don’t see groundwater, it is easy to take it for granted. To get you thinking about this important resource, take this quiz to test your knowledge.

1. Where does our groundwater come from? A. Rainfall and melting snow.

B. Underground rivers.

2. A homeowner has a well to provide drinking water. From where the water seeped into the ground, about how far did the groundwater travel before entering the well? A. Less than a mile away.

C. 20 miles away.

B. 5 to 10 miles away. D. From Mt. Katahdin or the White Mountains, depending on the well location.

Groundwater is an important resource that needs our protection. Out of sight shouldn’t mean out of mind! Brought to you by the Maine Department of Environmental Protection, Remediation and Waste Management Bureau.

Are there any signs of YES spills around the fill pipe?

Is the tank’s gauge YES NO cracked, stuck, or frozen? Do you see oil or staining around it?

3. How often should you pump out your septic system? A. Once a year.

C. When you see wet areas near the leach field.

B. At least once every five years.

D. When you buy or sell the house.

Is your tank more than YES NO 25 years old? Is your outside tank a YES NO dark color? It should be painted a light color to minimize corrosive condensation inside the tank.

4. What can you do to help protect groundwater? A. Check your heating oil tank.

C. Be careful when fueling small engines. (Prevent spills!)

B. Store all gasoline containers in a well ventilated shed away and downslope from your well.

D. Limit the use of lawn chemicals.

If any of your answers to this checklist are YES, please call your licensed oil heat technician for a more detailed inspection and corrective measures.

E. All of the above.

5. Which well-type is more susceptible to contamination? A. Dug wells.

Photo: Workers in yellow suits clean up a basement flooded with oil from a leaking oil tank.

B. Drilled wells.

Answers: 1. (A) In Maine, we get about 42 inches of precipitation a year. Some of it evaporates or transpires through plants and never reaches water bodies. The rest runs off the land into lakes, streams, wetlands or rivers, or soaks into the ground to become groundwater. 2. (A) Less than a mile away. While there are some areas of the country where groundwater moves long distances underground, in Maine most of the groundwater intercepted by a well travels only a short distance. 3. (B) Most experts recommend that septic systems be pumped every three to five years. If septic systems aren’t working right, they can contaminate your drinking water. 4. (E) All of the above. (To check your home heating oil tank, use the list to the left and right.) 5. (A) Dug wells. A review of statewide water test results reveals that dug wells are about twice as likely to show elevated bacteria counts as compared to drilled wells. A dug well may allow surface water to enter through a poorly fitting lid. Drilled wells tend to be more protected from direct entry of surface water into the well.

Financing energy efficient upgrades If you’re planning home improvements related to energy efficiency, you’ll definitely want to check out the following state and federal rebate, tax incentive and loan programs. The savings can really add up, and in some cases, they can shave off up to half the cost of the project.

Maine home energy savings program Homeowners can get rebates of up to $3,000* for approved energy efficiency projects, regardless of income, with incentives from Efficiency Maine. Eligible improvements include insulation, sealing air leaks, high-efficiency heating systems and water heaters, solar heating systems and Energy Star windows and doors. It all starts with a home energy audit. This is a limited-time opportunity with stimulus funds from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. See www.efficiencymaine.com for more information.

Energy efficiency loans Last year, Maine received $30 million in federal stimulus funds to establish an energy efficiency program that enables homeowners to get long-term low-interest loans through their hometowns. Learn more about the new Property Assessed Clean Energy (PACE) program at www.efficiencymainetrust.org. 46 www.TheSunriseGuide.com

Federal tax credits Federal tax credits are available for home energy efficiency improvements, including insulation and sealing, replacing windows and doors, roofs, furnaces, geothermal heat, biomass stoves, fans, solar electricity and water heating systems and small wind systems. The credit incentive (at time of publication) is 30% of the cost of eligible improvements, with a $1,500 cap on credit per home for heating and cooling equipment, windows, insulation, storm doors, air sealing and some roofing. There is no cap on solar, wind, or geothermal systems. Please note: Some of the federal credits are currently set to expire in 2010. Please see www.energytaxincentives.org for the latest information. The above information is not intended to be tax advice. Contact a tax professional for specific recommendations.

Replacement heating equipment rebates Thanks to a Stimulus Fund grant, Efficiency Maine is offering rebates up to $300* for qualifying boilers, furnaces, air source heat pumps and water heaters. Homeowners need to reserve their rebate online at www.efficiencymaine. com beforehand and can file for the rebate online once the system has been installed.

Home appliance rebate program For a limited time, the Efficiency Maine Appliance Rebate Program is offering rebates on select Energy Star appliances: ፚፚ Clothes washer—$50 rebate ፚፚ Refrigerator—$25–$75 rebate ፚፚ Air conditioner/dehumidifier—$25 rebate Be sure to obtain a mail-in rebate form from the retailer when you make the purchase. * Funded by a Federal Stimulus grant. Available for a limited time.

Weatherization

Weatherization myths and facts Myth #1 The solution for ice dams is to call a roofer. Fact. Ice dams aren’t a roofing problem. Ice dams form when attics are unintentionally heated by air leaks and/or insufficient insulation. This causes snow on the roof to melt, and freeze on the eaves, creating ice dams. You can reduce the risk of ice dams by sealing attic air leaks and adding insulation. Myth #2 The solution for frozen pipes is to call a plumber. Fact. Though a plumber can repair a frozen pipe, weatherizing is the best way to avoid having them freeze in the first place.

Myth #3 It’s easy to tell where my home is losing energy. Fact. Many homeowners think the biggest air leaks are around windows and doors. While these leaks can be significant, most air leaks are hidden from view, passing through floors and ceilings around chimneys, pipes, ductwork, etc. An Efficiency Maine Participating Energy Advisor, using specialized equipment and a computer model, can identify and quantify the extent of your energy loss. Myth #4 The best way to deal with uncomfortably hot rooms is with an

air conditioner. Fact. With professional weatherization you can often address the source of the discomfort without using energy-draining air conditioners. Professional weatherization cannot only keep rooms warmer in the winter, but also keep them cooler in the summer. Get valuable cash incentives from Efficiency Maine when you invest in energy efficient upgrades for your home. It’s home comfort paid for by energy savings. Visit efficiencymaine.com or call 866-376-2463.

Greener gift registries For those celebrating weddings, baby showers or other big occasions, traditional gifts aren’t the only option; alternative gift registries are popping up everywhere. Check out registries that emphasize homemade or non-material gifts over traditional storebought items, www.alternativegiftregistry.org. Another cool possibility is a registry that enables donations to causes chosen by the person who sets up the registry—check out www.changingthepresent.org/weddings. Community & Culture

Community & Culture

Arts and the environment Ja me s S t r i ckl a n d Guest Column, Belfast-based artist

Perhaps the most exciting movement here in the beginning of the 21st century is the idea of “thinking green,” the simple evolution of living in synchronicity with our planet, its diverse life forms and abundant resources. While leading humankind back to our roots and connecting us more closely with all fellow inhabitants of this burgeoning yet fragile planet, “green thinking” also leads us to use new and exciting technologies to enhance previous paradigms into fresh and new examples of creativity. As an artist and theologian, I have always valued and revered how art and its quest for beauty speaks to our innermost lives. The intriguing prospect of combining new green technologies and artistic endeavors into one energy producing object is now a reality and a personal quest. Sculptures that not only enrich our visual world but at the same time heat our buildings, light our parks and gardens, and teach our children about sustainable energy resources have become more than

just a dream. In silence these sculptural sentinels await the power of the sunrise. Collecting energy throughout the day and storing it in increasingly more efficient formats, these heliocentric objects not only speak to our inner need for beauty but also connect us closely with the life force of our amazing biosphere. Since the cave paintings of Lescaux, artists have interpreted the beauty that surrounds them. Standing on the broad shoulders of our remote ancestors, “green” artists using tools of which even Leonardo couldn’t have dreamed, can take the next step and enter into a closer and even more harmonious relationship with the natural world from which we sprang. James Strickland, a Belfast-based artist, has been placing large-scale sculptures in corporate, public and private venues for the last 30 years. He is now incorporating solar collection systems into these artworks to help create energy and mitigate the carbon footprint of each sculpture. Visit www. jamesstricklandart.com.

Advertising criteria Our goal in publishing the SunriseGuide is to create a resource that supports and inspires a healthy and environmentally friendly life in Maine. All products and services advertised in the SunriseGuide meet one of the following criteria. In cases where the criteria fit is not obvious, we have asked our advertisers to include a note on their ad/coupon to inform you why their business is an eco-friendlier alternative. You may notice that some coupons are limited to specific green products, while others are good for your entire purchase. In cases where the coupon is storewide and not limited to specific products, such as local markets and restaurants, advertisers have completed a survey to demonstrate that a significant portion of their offerings are local, organic, and/or sustainably sourced. Many businesses, such as hardware stores, garden centers and book stores offer coupons for a specific selection of eco-friendly products.

The SunriseGuide welcomes advertising and coupons for products and services that: ፚፚ Meet the certification standards for environmental friendliness from independent third parties, including (among others) Energy Star, Green Seal, USDA Organic, MOFGA, Water Sense, Marine Stewardship Council, Forest Stewardship Council, Maine DEP Environmental Leader, Fair Trade. ፚፚ Have a significantly reduced environmental impact over similar products/ activities (e.g. locally grown produce, products made with recycled materials, native plants, meat/dairy without growth hormones).

ፚፚ Promote the health of mind, body and spirit through outdoor activity and other forms of physical fitness. ፚፚ In addition, we welcome advertisements from locally owned businesses who produce or distribute a product that is not known to be harmful to the environment or people, and demonstrate a commitment to sustainable business practices such as: a comprehensive recycling program, use of natural cleaners, renewable energy, policies that prefer recycled office products, supporting environmental organizations, supporting locally owned businesses and more.

ፚፚ Support a vibrant and sustainable community (arts, culture, volunteerism). 70

Your Questions Can Effect Change While these criteria are meant to help you locate eco-friendly products, they are not a replacement for doing your own research. We encourage you to ask questions of your local businesses to learn where products and ingredients come from and what their commitment to reducing environmental impacts is. The more interest in sustainable practices that they receive from their customers, the more likely they are to provide products and services that meet your needs.
