Worldwide spotlight for Gulfstream Park Hosting the Pegasus World Cup Invitational gives Hallandale Beach instant credibility By Larry Blustein Sfsuntimes@aol.com For over a week, leading up to the big race last Saturday, Gulfstream Park was firmly in the national spotlight. Positive publicity and promotion that would cost millions – for free! $12 million reasons that the entire horse racing world was glued to Hallandale Beach from every aspect, leading up to the “Big Game” of thoroughbred racing. What owner Frank Stronach and Gulfstream’s entire property got last weekend was the inaugural Pegasus World Cup Invitational – which is the richest horse race in the world.
As thousands and thousands flooded Gulfstream Park on Saturday, reminiscent of the Florida Derby or even the prestigious Breeders’ Cup, it dawned on everyone in this community and the many businesses that got a shot-in-thearm, this was the real deal. This was one of those weekends that you think about during July and August. “Perfect storm,” said Maria Wells of Toronto, who is vacationing in South Florida. “Great weather and a race that people have been talking about for the past year. My husband is a big race fan and we made plans to be here since Pegasus, Page 6A
