The Super Bowl Effect!
1918 All Over Again? By Jane M. Orient, M.D.
Clusters of a dozen or so deaths may get nonstop “if-itbleeds-it-leads” press coverage. But the lack of preparedness for the really, really big threats may be met with virtual radio silence—until panic breaks out. The worst, possibly existential, threat is the stealthy, invisible one that multiplies exponentially—in the accurate sense of the term: 400 cases today, 800 tomorrow, then 1600, 3200, 6400, 128000, 256000, 512000, and 1.024 million after only eight doubling times. Biological threats proliferate—until they run out of susceptible victims. In 1918, the great influenza pandemic killed as many people in 11 months as the medieval Black Death did in 4 years. Ultimately, at least 50 million may have perished. Young healthy people, especially young soldiers headed off to the front in World War I, succumbed quickly. To avoid interfering with the war effort, the U.S. government denied and covered up the threat, preventing the implementation of public health measures. Since then, the world has gotten smaller. A virus that jumps the species barrier from animals to humans in a meat market in China can cross the Pacific in hours. And despite the expenditure of $80 billion on a National Corona Virus, Page 6A

The Super Bowl, drum roll please, after ten trial formulas in South Florida, after five times in the present stadium, (XXIII,XXIX,XXXIII,XLI, and, XLIV), after five previous stadium names before the sixth name, famously known now as the Hard Rock Stadium, the Super Bowl, in a delicious way, kind of like the omni present Everlasting Gobstopper, actually became a reality in South Florida again. Back in 1968 we got a taste of it. In 2010 we got teased by the multiple flavors of it, and now that we know it’s ensemble of jubilant economic growth effects on our local economy from LIV, we are chewing on ideas for how to keep it coming back. Now that it is back in the rotation, as they call it, we don’t want it to ever end. Our thanks to all of you involved and associated with the Super Bowl stadium “Rain Maker”, Mr. Stephen Ross for deciding to move forward without public funding, for submitting the application on time, and for agreeing to the NFL stadium improvement requirements,(at a cost of around 400 million dollars or so to make it a multi-purpose stadium). We like the “Rain Gobstopper Canopy”. Thanks for keeping your word to make all the qualifying stadium frills, comforts, and other improvements to the stadium that mutually benefit the surrounding areas and the roadways. You most likely knew the prestige, civic pride, and the economic boom would be worth the investment and in the end zone, provide benefits to the surrounding communities. Looks like it paid off with lasting dividends! By the way, we knew it would too. That’s one of the many reasons we have remained living lavida loca here, moved here and invested here. This is South Florida after all! We think outside the bowl also!! There are many ways anyone might look at the many effects of having the Super Bowl here. They can size it up one way or another, or see it as various degrees of prosperity in many ways. Some could say the Super Bowl being here enhanced the already esthetic environment and local economy. Some might even say it’s a marvel, the entire Super Bowl Experience that is, before during and after. Carnivals and all. You can even call it an afro-
