not an easy task. Our entire city staff needs to be commended for their efforts. The good news is that the hard work, commitment and dedication have paid off.

We did even better this budget. In fact, we added top notch lifeguard services that now provide service from county line to county line. We also added a state of art green park facility, The Foster Park Community Center. If you have not visited it yet, I encourage you to.

There is a library with a computer area, meeting rooms, exercise room and many programs.

will see an increase in 2013. Recently I attended a ULI Conference where it was reported values may increase in some areas by 12 %. I am hearing from Broward realtors that we may see 8%.

Dr. Randy Anderson, a Howard Phillips Eminent Scholar Chair in Real Estate at UCF shared his real estate projection during his recent presentation at the Urban Land Institute Economic Conference. He also expressed this sentiment “Everyone said Florida would never recover. Local podiatrist saves limbs being destroyed by non-healing wounds

By Marylynne Newmark, Medical Writer NORTH MIAMI BEACH - Dr. Charlton Adler, a three- time Board Certified podiatrist with offices in Aventura/ North Miami Beach, has been credited with saving the limbs of two patients diagnosed with necrotizing fasciitis, a bacterial infection that quickly spreads from foot to leg, destroying healthy tissue and transforming it into gangrenous flesh.

Both of these cases were misdiagnosed by other physicians who were recommending amputation.

“Because of my background and training at Miami VA Medical Center and 25 years of experience in non-healing wounds, this type of diagnosis is very familiar to me,” says Dr. Adler, “After careful assess-

ment, I am able to address these wounds aggressively, consequently saving the limbs. This is why I have earned the reputation of a limb salvage specialist.”

According to Dr. Adler, this type of bacteria spreads very quickly, destroying flesh very rapidly. If not identified early, it can result in amputation or death.

“One case was so severe,” said Dr. Adler, “that the attending physician recommended immediate amputation.”

After explaining his previous successes with various debriding techniques, Dr. Adler took over the case, and the leg was saved.

“Another patient lives in the Virgin Islands,” says Dr. Adler. “She developed a severe infection after a simple biopsy and was told

they needed to amputate, but she was aware of previous successes I had with her family members. By the time she flew to Miami,” continued Dr. Adler, “ the infection had spread halfway up her leg. We treated her aggressively and were able to save it” . “Now, whenever I visit St. Thomas with my family," Dr. Adler smiled, “ I am treated like an outright hero.”

I feel like “been there, done that and sure glad it is over!!!

We will focus once again on keeping taxes low and providing an even better level of service. The finical health of our city is looking good for the New Year. We came out of the recession leaner and more efficient. We will still need to watch very closely to what takes place in Tallahassee, DC and on Wall Street.

Theses all impact what happens on Main Street.

There are three main issues that will impact cities: Changes to the way cities can use Insurance Tax Premium dollars to pay for unfunded pension obligations, Internet Sales Taxes and Health Care.

The most promising in my opinion is the bipartisan support for leveling the playing field for retail business; The Market Place Fairness Act. A University of Tennessee study estimated that uncollected sales taxes on e-commerce create annual tax revenue losses of $11.4 billion. This was in 2012. That figure grows to $23.3 billion when catalog, phone and mail order sales are included. For small business it is simply reducing their sales advantages by 5 -9% and does not address the bricks and mortar costs. With new technology available to calculate and collect taxes there has been less push back on changing internet tax laws. Every small business should be

contacting their legislators to pass this and other measures. In my opinion this will save “Main Street “and the backbone of our cities; small business.

Pension Reform has been a key issue of every government agency. For Hallandale Beach we have worked collectively to address our pension liabilities. We have successfully addressed our General Employee pension costs and are optimistically waiting for agreement with Police that includes some balanced reforms that will address long term liabilities.

We do support flexibility with insurance premium taxes, but the main message is “we need to keep pension decision local”. We know what works for our city and know our employees. Health Insurance changes will be impacting our city as it may be impacting your businesses bottom line. Our Staff is proactively shopping the Market Place and working with other Human Resource Departments to negotiate the best price for reasonable coverage.

I am sure you are wondering why I did not mention Gaming in this list of issues.

As for gambling, there is no new report. Last week the Senate heard presentations on destination casinos from Genting and Sands. It is too early to tell, but the buzz is that nothing will change this year.

Other budget demands will come with the new parks that will be built. This new level of service will require changes in staffing levels for operations and maintenance.

Our city staff and your commission are ready to meet these challenges and use them as an opportunity to address the needs of our residents and business owners with innovative and efficient

solutions.

This year will be the year Hallandale Beach moves to the cloud, or in technical terms moving to software a service. This new technology will allow our city to provide much more efficient and streamlined services and provide our city resources on line and at your fingertips.

The migration to the new system will take some time, but we are well on our way to full “E” Government.

Financial outlook for our city is bright. As a Mayor I am always concerned with watching every tax dollar, balancing our budget and providing services that meet the demands of our residents. But as a leader I always keep my eye on the bigger picture. Before our city visioning session I met with our Consultant.

We were to meet in the office, but I asked him to drive around the city in my car. I wanted him to see what I see and share some of my frustrations. I relayed to him that often looking at the big picture is great but it is good to start fresh.

A new beginning. I wanted to see the city like it was the first time I was visiting. It is like the old saying "not seeing the forest through the trees." Running any city is simply not about year to year budget. It is about strategic budgeting and planning for the future. As business leaders you know you need to have a vision of where you want to be in 5 years…10…

Over the past ten years we have focused on developing our corridors, creating a Town Center the Village at Gulfstream and laying out a long term Vision for our community through our Transportation Plan and Citywide Master Plan and the exciting Parks Master Plan. We have laid the ground work to address

future growth and redevelopment. These planning tools are critical to our sustainability as a city. In our adopted Master Plan that was created in partnership with the commission, citizens and business partners in 2009, we laid out a blue print of where development and redevelopment should be directed.

It has been almost five years and we have two new commissioners and a new city manager on board. Now is the perfect time revisit the plan and work on implementing strategies and fine tuning policies. Under the leadership of our New Director of Development Services Director Wu and other new staff we will be working on making sure the proper regulations and codes are in place. This will ensure the plans and vision that were laid out will be followed. Future investors and developers will have the tools they need in place to create the redevelopment our residents want and that will insure our economic sustainability. Most importantly we need to maintain the commitment to our residents; to guide and manage redevelopment along our main corridors while maintaining our existing neighborhoods.

I am energized to be working with a great team of colleagues and professional staff. Over the course of the election I kept coming back to this core strength “our neighborhoods.”

We have a tremendous amount of diversity with our geographic boundaries and our population. Our city was regretfully built without much planning. Each neighborhood evolved over the past 85 years. The Southwest, Northwest, Southeast, Northeast, Three Islands, Golden Isles and our Ocean Drive area.

While all are part of the same

town each has a uniqueness which brings with them challenges and opportunities for reinvest in our neighborhoods. My goal of “No Neighborhoods Left Behind” will insure every neighborhood is complete.

We emphasized preserving neighborhoods. Now we need to make sure that we invest in infrastructure that improves and enhances neighborhood living. This commission is committed to make those investments. We have already laid out a vision to invest in each neighborhood through our park system. We have added park space for the first time in many years to areas like the Northeast that never had a park area in walking distance and we opened a new marina. We have opened an historical village. This year we will break ground on three park rehabilitation projects.

South Beach and Joe Scavo Park will have a total facelift and we will be adding a brand new pool to BF James.

North Beach Park is being built trough a public private

partnership that is not costing our taxpayers and will acutely create new revenues.

Our Completion of the Parks Master Plan is a shared vision from our commission and we will be asking stakeholders like you to embrace investing in our future through a bond referendum.

These investments will create a more livable and sustainable community.

The city will also be looking at completion of infrastructure within our quadrants. This includes sidewalks, lighting, landscaping and other tangible infrastructure improvements that will make our neighborhoods safer and more walkable.

Our city is a very safe city.

Even with the recent homicides, our crime statistics show a 20% reduction in crime. As elected officials one of our paramount duties is public safety. sure residents “are and feel safe”. We can continue to lower crime stats, but until people feel safe we have only accomplished half our goal. Feeling safe has a lot to do with our physical environment and perception. You are not going to walk down a dark road and feel comfortable. Walking on a sidewalk is safer then walking on busy street. I can, but I am not going to feel safe. Many times people will simply avoid an area that is perceived unsafe while crime stats show little or no crime. These improvements to the public domain and an extra focus on code enforced to clean up blight will go a long way in improving safety, help property values and preserve our neighbors.

Investment does not stop there. We still have work to do on our corridors. Our two main corridors, Hallandale Beach Boulevard and Federal Highway, have been upgraded over the past ten years. We just planted A1A last year.

We are focused on giving these areas a facelift and insuring the medians is maintained more efficiently. A1A is now in design phase for the second part of the planned rehabilitation; new sidewalks lighting and crosswalks. Before that work commences we will be replacing the underground water main. All corridors will also be evaluated for street furniture.

We have implemented a very successful mini bus system that complements the Broward transit system, but we still have many areas that lack shelters or even stops. Back in 2004 is when we started to rehabilitate the main corridors starting with Hallandale Beach Boulevard we adopted designs for our bus shelters system. We have had the goal to replace the old shelters and find new locations.

Sounds pretty easy, it has been but it has been more than a challenge. It is been extremely difficult to acquire the right of way to install shelters and all locations need to meet ADA requirements.

Over the past two years alone we have been working on installing a shelter at the Prince George. Last month we finally executed an agreement with them. Mr. Sep, their President and their board all worked to make this a reality. We still are working on the stop being replaced at the Hemispheres. This too has taken over two years. I along with the commission am frustrated and agree the process needs to be pushed forward and completed.

The next corridor that we will focus on is the Dixie Highway area. I call this area the sleeper. The corridor has so much potential, but we need to work with FDOT, Broward County and FEC to develop a master plan.

preparing for an exciting presentation at The SF Regional Transportation Authority tomorrow to establish a train station at a selected site on South Dixie. The train station will be connected to Bluesten Park and is part of the overall redevelopment of the park. We are working collaboratively with Gulfstream Park and other stakeholders on this plan. After talking about and planning the FEC corridor for over 15 years plus the project is projected to be done in 3-5 years.

As part of our transportation Master Planning we are slated to implement one of the may suggested strategies to help improve traffic flow; Way finding signs. These signs will be placed around our city delineating areas and directing travelers to alternate routes to reach their destinations.

Before spending money we decided to combine this project with new city branding. We hired Motiv8 to create a new marketing strategy that reflects our changing city. Over the past months they have reached out to many of our stakeholders to develop a new city logo and motto to reflect this new era in Hallandale Beach. I am proud to be introducing it to you all today.

HALLANDALE BEACH PROGRESSIVE INNOVATIVE OPPORTUNITY Progressive in basic terms is moving forward. But it means much more when applied. One is progressive when they use new ideas, utilize new findings to move forward or take the lessons learned and improve on how you have done things in the past. Innovative – Using something new or as it is new. I want to say that again “new or as new”.

This is my favorite word to describe our city. We are and will remain innovative. We have to as a city!

We must solve problems and move forward.

But this does not mean we cannot dust off older programs and implement them in today’s world with a different twist. Just like I did “go out to see our city with the mind set it was my first time”. As the commission does: sitting in the room and visioning for the future while looking at past practices and making them new and improved. Most importantly being innovative removes the concept of “NO” and creates an atmosphere of problem solving. Opportunity- Suitable or convenient for a particular occurrence. Changing the motto and logo of a city is not easy, but the word Opportunity

means to me choices suitable for any occurrences. We have great opportunity to live work and play.

I have tried to highlight some of the exciting things taking place in our city. We still have a way to go.

I believe our city is in the state to simply go back to basics and improve what is in the public realm we have control over. That means finish and maintaining our infrastructure, improving the tools we have to get the work done while refining… ever so sensitive to our bottom line the costs to live and work in our city.

Safe clean neighborhoods, basic pubic infrastructure, customer friendly services, clean maintained corridors, great parks, great schools, access to pubic transportations and access to shopping and entertainment. We do this through progressive innovation utilizing every opportunity.

Many parts of our city are receiving a facelift.

The commission is new; staffing is new, infrastructure new. I too have been inspired for a facelift. And no, not the Plastic kind. I welcome you to check it out …my new website. I have created a nonprofit educational forum called Hallandale Beach 360.

As gravity sewer systems age, settlement, aggressive soils, tree roots and aging pipe materials result in cracks or joint failures that allow groundwater to seep into the pipe.

This is called infiltration.

When storms occur, rain also gets into the sewer system—this is called inflow. This infiltration and inflow ends up

being sent to the City's Waste Water Treatment Plant (WWTP) where it goes through the same treatment process as actual wastewater collected from homes and businesses. Treating this extra water not only significantly increases operating costs, it takes up a substantial portion of the City's plant capacity (how much flow the WWTP can handle) and wastes energy to process.

To reduce the amount of infiltration into the City's sewer system, the Public Utilities Department has adopted an Infiltration and Inflow (I&I) program. This program involves inspecting sewer pipes using a camera inserted into the pipe, and where warranted, installing liners

on the inside of the pipe. These liners conform and bond to the inner walls of the pipe preventing groundwater or stormwater from getting into the system.

Lining sewer pipes is much less costly and disruptive than cutting open streets, digging up aging pipes (some of which are up to 18 feet underground) and replacing the pipe. Still, the lining process does involve several steps and requires several contractors to complete.

This can create inconveniences to surrounding residents. The Department of Public Utilities provides notification to residents when I & I projects begin in a neighborhood and additional notification when problems are found that

When Children Train Parents

Q… Dr. Ron,,. my 3 yr. old nephew is a little tyrant. He will scream in a store for a toy until my sister finally agrees, out of frustration and embarrassment, to buy it for him. Doesn't she need to say no to her child, who has been trained to get a toy for screaming. .. J.B. Hollywood Probably yes, but you have your reasoning a little reversed. You see the child is not learning that crying will get him his toy; although it will get his mother’s attention, it is his cessation of crying that reinforces his getting the toy. This portrays a fundamental concept in psychology called “negative reinforcement”, developed in theory by a fella named B.F. Skinner.., one of psychology’s most important researchers.

In the mid 20th century B.F. Skinner articulated a paradigm of behavior that was simple and very accurate. He called his theory “operant conditioning”, which works on the mechanisms of positive and negative reinforcement. At the core is the idea that if a behavior is reinforced, the behavior will most likely be repeated again. Positive reinforcement is basically award-based.

Give a child a cookie for good school-work, a dog a bone for healing, and you can basically train or shape a desired behavior…… Negative reinforcement works in a similar way, but rather than giving something desirable as reinforcement, the reward or reinforcement works by taking away an unpleasant or undesirable condition…. For example, taking an aspirin to take away a head-ache…, or in this case taking away a child’s irritating screams which the child rewards his mother with to get his toy. In other words “Give me the toy and I’ll stop crying!”. The longer this continues, the stronger a repeat of this behavior will most likely occur.

Yes J.B.…, in the situation you have described, it does appear this child is conditioning his mother, and believe it or not, most children at a very young age learn to do this. Children are more intelligent than most people think.., and have all the time in the world to train parents.

His mother must do her best not to acquiesce to her child’s screaming. It may be difficult, even gruesome at first, but if she sticks to her guns, eventually her child’s manipulative behavior should cease……...., Dr. Ron

ing chest pains while taking a walk, Dr. Franklin went to a hospital in the Keys to have doctors examine him. He also called his cardiologist back home in Boston. His doctor advised him that he needed to get to a skilled medical facility immediately and told him to go to Mount Sinai. Heeding his cardiologist’s advice, Dr. Franklin went to Mount Sinai by ambulance and scheduled himself to have an elective cardiac catheterization done the next day.

Dr. Franklin, who is skilled in reading cath lab images, watched as Dr. Nirat Beohar, director of the Mount Sinai Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory, began examining his heart to detect blockages, or occlusions.

“I hope it’s not the widow maker,” Dr. Franklin said to Dr. Beohar, referring to the nickname that describes a highly stenotic, or severely narrowed, left anterior descending coronary artery. It earned its nickname because if the artery abruptly becomes completely blocked, it can cause a massive attack that likely will lead to sudden death.

It turns out that it was a widow maker, and Dr. Franklin went into severe cardiac arrest at the very moment that Dr. Beohar spotted the occlusion.

Dr. Franklin lost massive amounts of blood and plasma.

Whatever blood he did not lose began going into tongue, kidneys and other organs. He was without oxygen for almost 15 minutes. A team of two doctors, five nurses and five technicians sprinted into action.

Doctors immediately got through the occlusion, dilated his artery and placed a stent to preserve the artery. Then they used an impellar pump to help stabilize blood flow to the heart.

“We also used therapeutic hypothermia, which is putting the patient to sleep and then freezing his body to 34 degrees Celsius for 24 hours,” said Dr. Beohar. This methodical approach halts the body’s

natural inflammatory response and is carefully coordinated among physicians in an emergency room or cath lab to avoid brain damage after cardiac arrest.

“This enabled us to preserve Dr. Franklin’s brain function,” Dr. Beohar explained. “If we had not used it, even though we were able to bring him out of cardiac arrest, there would have been a great chance that he would have had brain damage.”

“I shouldn’t be alive,” said Dr. Franklin. “I was truly in the right place at the right time.

This heart attack was going to happen within hours and if I had been anywhere else, I’d be dead right now.”

His wife, Kathleen, agreed.

“I had no hope that he would live and if he did, there was a strong chance he would be a vegetable,” she said.

“What happened is nothing short of the best medicine possible.”

Important FDOT meeting on Mar. 13

Florida Department of Transportation officials will explain a planned resurfacing and lighting project for A-1-A in Hallandale Beach at an informational meeting at 6 p.m., Wednesday, March 13, at the Cultural Community Center, 410 SE 3rd Street.

Barrier island residents in Hallandale Beach are urged to attend the meeting to learn about the projected $3.2 million project to resurface A-1-A and improve lighting. The project runs about one mile; the length of Hallandale Beach from the Miami-Dade County line to Seacrest Parkway in Hollywood.

FDOT hopes to award a contract in early 2014 with work to begin in June 2014. Officials project the work will be completed in March 2015. This means the work could impact the winter season.

To inspect the plans, offer suggestions and find out potential impacts, stop by the Cultural Community Center at 6 p.m., Wednesday, March 13, to speak with FDOT officials and learn more about the proposed project.

Northeast Drainage has started Construction of the $8million stormwater mitigation program in the Northeast Quadrant is under way. Crews began digging last week, closing the southbound lane of N.E. 14th Avenue beginning at Atlantic Shores.

Southbound traffic in the area is being detoured to N.E. 12th Avenue. Work on N.E. 14th Avenue is expected to affect traffic for six months. The overall project is projected to be completed in December.

The City is digging new drainage wells, placing a new storm water drainage pipes and a new sewage line.

CITY OF HALLANDALE BEACH FY 2014 COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIP GRANTS PROGRAMS GRANT FUNDING ANNOUNCEMENT

The City of Hallandale Beach through the COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIP GRANT PROGRAMS has grant funds available to support programs and services as identified and recommended by the City Commission. The intent of this funding is to allocate resources to community based organizations who will address Priority Areas identified by the City. It should be noted that some funding will be neighborhood based in order to respond to high need and underserved populations. New and innovative programs that are research based or best practice models that address priority areas are encouraged. Organizations applying for funding should demonstrate collaboration with other organizations in order to leverage resources for services.

All Requests for Funding must demonstrate that programs or services benefit the residents of Hallandale Beach.

The City awards grants under two categories.

Mini Grant funds are for requests up to $5000. Mini Grant Funds may be used for, but are not limited to, the following: • Education Programs • Matching Grant Funds • Capacity Building • Sponsorship • Cultural Arts • Training • Health and Wellness • General Operating • Criminal Justice.

Grant Funding requests over $5000 must address a Priority Area identified by the City. The ceiling award for grants under this category is $50,000.

Priority Areas for FY 2014 are: • Education • Workforce Development • Cultural Arts • Health and Wellness • Criminal Justice.

Grants under the two categories may not be used for the following purposes: • Capital campaigns • Fundraising events • Activities to propagate a religious faith or restricted to one religion or denomination • Political activities • Honorariums for guests • Grants to individuals • Emergency funding.

Grant Requirements If you apply for a Mini Grant you will not be eligible for other grant funding.

Only one (1) grant will be awarded to an organization within an annual period. Do not submit multiple applications. If an agency is not awarded funds, they may apply again the next distribution date.

The organization’s Board Chairperson, Executive Director, President, CEO, School Principal or official agency representative must sign the Application.

Applicants will be required to make a presentation to a Grant Review Committee.

Must be a registered 501c(3) charitable organization or a Broward County School.

If your agency is funded you will be required to submit Monthly Reports for Payment and a Final Report Summary is due to the City thirty (30) days upon completion of the program.

Applications are accepted once per year.

The grant period for this award is October 1, 2013 until September 30, 2014.

Award funding will be made available after October 1, 2013 and upon execution of an Agreement with the City.

MEATLOAF MADNESS CLASSIC MEATLOAF 1-1/2lb. extra-lean ground beef 1 pkg. (6 oz.) STOVE TOP Stuffing Mix for Chicken 1 onion, chopped 1 egg, beaten 1 tsp. dried thyme leaves 1 can (10-3/4 oz.) condensed tomato soup, divided 1/4 cup chili sauce

HEAT oven to 350°F. MIX first 5 ingredients.

Add 1/2 cup soup; mix well. Press into 8x4-inch loaf pan sprayed with cooking spray.

BAKE 55 min. or until done (160ºF). About 10 min. before the meatloaf is done, cook remaining soup and chili sauce in saucepan on medium heat until heated through, stirring occasionally.

REMOVE meatloaf from pan; top with soup mixture.

TOUGH GUY MEATLOAF 1 lb each: ground beef, veal, pork (or use half beef, half pork) 1 onion, finely chopped 3 Tbsp. minced parsley 2 eggs

2 Tbsp. flour 2 Tbsp. bread crumbs salt and pepper to taste 1 tsp. each: paprika, dried oregano, dried thyme 13/4 cup V-8 or tomato juice 3 strips bacon (optional)

Prehat oven to 350F. In a large bowl, mix together everything but the bacon, mixing well with your hands without overworking it, which could make your meatloaf tough.

Pat the mixture into an ungreased 9x 5-inch loaf pan, and bake for 45 minutes. Lay the bacon slices on top and bake for another 30 minutes, or until cooked through.

BACON MUSHROOM MEATLOAF 8 slices bacon 1 Tbsp. olive oil 4 chopped large mushrooms (cremini, button) 1 onion, minced 1/2 cup corn flake crumbs 1 egg, beaten 1/4 cup evaporated milk 1 cup shredded Havarti cheese 1-1/2 lbs. extra lean

ground beef 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. In a large heavy skillet, cook bacon until crisp. Remove to paper towels to drain and cool. Crumble bacon and set aside.

Drain bacon fat from skillet but do not wash.

Add olive oil, mushrooms and onion to skillet and saute until tender, stirring frequently. Let cool slightly.

In a large bowl, mix the cornflake crumbs, egg, evaporated milk and cheese. Add the mushroom and onion mixture and the crumbled cooked bacon. Add the ground beef and mix gently just until combined.

Shape into a loaf and place in a large loaf pan. Bake at 350 degrees for 55-65 minutes, or until cooked through. Drain fat from the pan and sprinkle the Parmesan cheese on top. Return to oven and bake for an additional 5 minutes, or until cheese is melted. Let stand for 10-15 minutes before slicing. 4 to 6 servings.

CAJUN MEATLOAF 2 Tbsp. olive oil

1 onion, chopped 1 rib celery, chopped 1/2 green bell pepper, chopped 3 cloves garlic, minced 1/2 tsp. salt 1/4 tsp. cayenne pepper 1/8 tsp. white pepper 1/8 tsp. pepper 1/2 tsp. cumin 1 Tbsp. Worcestershire sauce 1/2 tsp. Tabasco sauce 1/4 cup milk 1/4 cup ketchup 2 eggs, beaten 1/2 cup soft bread crumbs 1 lb. lean ground beef 1/2 lb. lean ground pork

Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Heat olive oil in a heavy 10" skillet over medium heat. Add onion, celery, green pepper and garlic and cook uncovered for 5-6 minutes, stirring constantly, until tender. Add salt, peppers, cumin, Worcestershire sauce and Tabasco sauce. Remove from heat and let cool 15 minutes.

Stir in milk, ketchup, eggs, and bread crumbs and mix well. Add ground beef and pork and mix gently, just until combined. Place meatloaf mixture into a greased, 9"x5" loaf pan, patting gently.

Bake meatloaf, uncovered, at 375 degrees for 50-55 minutes or until it is dark brown and pulls away from the sides of pan. Interior temperature should be 160 degrees. Carefully drain fat from pan. Cover meatloaf and let stand for 10-15 minutes before slicing. Serves 6-8.

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Spray a 9x13" baking pan with nonstick cooking spray. In a medium saucepan cook carrots, onion, and garlic in butter until tender.

Place in large bowl and add bread crumbs, egg, milk, parsley, and thyme until well blended. Let stand 10 minutes.

Add ground turkey and turkey sausage and mix gently just until combined. Shape into a large loaf about 2-1/2" high. Place in prepared pan. Mix ketchup, brown sugar, dry mustard, and pepper in a small bowl and spread over loaf.

Bake at 350 degrees for 45-60 minutes or until thoroughly cooked and meat thermometer registers 160 degrees.

Cover with foil and let rest 10 minutes before slicing. 8 servings
