With dozens of friends and those in the profession coming out to

see this tremendous office - located right off US 1, and just north of Johnson Street, Hollywood gained yet another heavy hitter when Dr. Braverman moved north after 40 successful years in Hallandale Beach.

“It is really an honor to have such a prestigious and so well respected business come into our community, and we welcome all of you

with open arms,” said Mayor Levy. “The solid reputation certainly precedes all of you.”

With that, Dr. Braverman, his wife, Jennifer, and daughter, Kaelin, helped cut the ribbon to officially welcome the Braverman Eye Center to Hollywood - as dozens dined on some tremendous food and appreciated this two

“As I said when we opened back in June, this is a dream come true - that was five years in the planning,” Dr. Braverman said. “It was our idea - all along, to have an office that was spacious, state-of-the-art in technology and offer our employees and many loyal patients an experience that they haven’t had before.”

“In addition, when you can have the Mayor of Hollywood and so many other quality industry people welcome us this way, it is really an amazing feeling,” Dr. Braverman added.

Indeed, the official grand opening took place last Wednesday night - with tours of the spacious office as well as a chance to talk with other doctors, nurses and office staff.

As many enjoyed the experience of this grand opening, very few were as excited as Dr. Ryan Hargreaves. Originally a Massachusetts native, Dr. Hargreaves has noticed the difference in the move - with more and more patients and the staff feeling rejuvenated - with more space and cutting edge technology on display.

“This is an amazing facility where nobody is on top of one another,” he explained. “Everyone knew and had been looking forward to the space, and that is what you saw this evening. It really has been special for all off us.”

No matter who he spoke with on Wednesday evening, Dr. Braverman was beaming with pride. Re-

member, this is someone who has performed thousands of sight-saving surgeries in over four decades, is a member of just about every organization and is one of the most well respected in the profession, but Dr. Braverman still gets excited when talking about his new eye center.

“This is everything you could imagine - and much more,” Dr. Braverman said, hosting several tours of his facility. “16 examining rooms, Laser Surgical Suite with a comfortable waiting room. This is simply an amazing facility with the latest in technology, too.”

With its 10 on staff medical doctors, ophthalmologists, and optometrists and countless skilled technicians - Braverman Eye Center has long been the leader in Laser Vision Correction.

“What we have done - with this space - is to designate seven rooms to those patients who are there for eye examinations,” Dr. Braverman explained.

school is highly influenced by the dominant ideology of the parents residing in each district. Research on the effectiveness of these three programs have supported comprehensive programs as having more positive outcomes, and correlate with students experiencing reduced pregnancies, and less high-risk sexual behavior. While I can understand how more conservative parents would rather not have their children learn about many sexual topics from a school program, they then best stand up to the plate, and talk to their kids. Hiding one’s heads in the sand, praying that the Lord will handle it.., is just too often an accident waiting to happen.

cused him of using his elected office for financial gain, Seat 1 has been vacant. Add to that, the January arrest of Mayor Joy Cooper, and much of this election this coming week has been put on the back-burner.

In the first debate, first time candidate Thomas Sands, community activist Ann Henigson (sixth time candidate) and longtime politician Bill Julian took part - with first time candidates Mike Butler and Jean “John” Stassi - not present at the American Legion post.

Last week, the forum moved to the Hallandale Community Cultural Center, where all candidates, except for Stassi, showed and were asked questions about City related issues, people and other things related to Hallandale Beach.

While the questions were fair and clear, the answers not so much as some candidates either didn’t understand the questions or they chose not to answer.

As many in the audience listened to the answers - using that as a measuring stick for who came out on top - several left confused on some of the answers.

“I thought that Mr. Butler had great answers and was 100 percent clear on who he is and where he is coming from,” Elise Levin-Cohen observed. “But I also feel that Mr. Julian has learned from all the mistakes made and has the experience, too.”

As questions were asked - from budget to growth of the City and the controversial Broward Sheriff’s Office (BSO) taking over the services in Hallandale Beach - some of the candidates did voice their opinion.

“From the time I can remember, the Hallandale Beach Police Department was certainly an iconic group for so many youngsters growing up here,” Julian explained. “It was the trust that was built up with

your own City’s law enforcement.”

In addition, Julian and the others spoke openly about how BSO is not such a favorable topic especially after the Douglas High tragedy.

“I would think that the residents here understand how important it is to have your own Cityrun department,” Sands said. “As a kid growing up here, I also looked up to the local Hallandale Beach Police that patrolled our City.”

Butler wasn’t on either side of the fence, opting to “seeing the data and understand how it’s going to affect the city.”

When it came to dealing with the budget, Butler, a successful businessman, had some observations on how he would do his part. Obviously, not seeing the budget, he contends that “in all budgets, you have to see what can be reduced or cut and still maintain a solid foundation.”

The winner in the special election will serve until November, when Sanders’ term ends.

For Julian, there are many who will not let his go, although past cleared of any wrong doing. He believes that people have watched enough in-fighting on the Commission - and feels that change has to be made.

“I think the city really needs me,” Julian said. “I miss it. I miss helping people - and they have continued to tell me how experience is my needed.”

Julian lost the 2016 election after audio recordings surfaced that implied that he may have solicited favors from a developer in exchange for a “yes” vote on a high-rise project.

Julian was also accused of asking the developer to get him a van for a pet charity along with 300 campaign workers.

He was cleared when the State Attorney’s Office said there was no evidence he received any benefit of any kind.

Julian maintains that he is the only candidate who has built up trusting relationships throughout the entire City and not just “east of U.S. 1”.

Henigson has also done so much to elevate the community by volunteering much of her time, and that is where she got her following.

Entering the race for the first time 11 years ago, her battle to have term limits is something that many agree with.

Having term limits in other areas have worked - not letting elected officials get too comfortable with special interest groups.

“If you have term limits, you will have fresh faces, new blood - and less chance for corruption.”

For Sands, who grew up in Hallandale Beach, his belief that he is the only true voice on the west side of the City, pointing out that “all of our elected officials live on the east side - and that area is often neglected.”

Sands has been coming to commission meetings since 2010, and has a very good grasp on the things that needed to be done. He is excited to have the opportunity.

While Stassi was not present for the forum last week, he maintains that, like Julian, he also thinks he can maintain peace on the dais.

“I just don’t like what I see on this commission,” he said. “I have learned from my experiences that new blood is a good thing. The respect for City government is para-

mount.”

Stassi also won’t support a merger with the Sheriff’s Office unless the current HBPD are

backing the move.

“The thing about this election is there are not going to be a lot of voters heading out,” Julian ex-

plained. “That’s why it’s essential to support your candidate by voting. One or two votes WILL make a difference.”

As part of the planning process, a survey has been created as a way for residents and visitors to share their parking experiences on Hollywood Beach.

The goal of the survey is to gain a better understanding of the travel patterns of beach employees, residents, visitors and business owners while on the barrier island. This survey does not include downtown Hollywood or other areas in the City of Hollywood.

WHAT IS VEIN DISEASE? HOW DOES IT PROGRESS AND WHAT SHOULD I DO? Veins carry blood back to the heart and have oneway valves. These valves may not work correctly and can cause “reflux” or back flow. For so many area families, the mention of Passover conjures memories of family, friends and great foods.

It is indeed a tradition that ushers in spring. The eight-day festival of Passover is celebrated in the early spring, from the 15th through the 22nd of the Hebrew month of Nissan, March 30-April 7.

The holiday commemorates the emancipation of the Israelites from slavery in ancient Egypt. It is observed by avoiding leaven, and highlighted by the Seder meals that include four cups of wine, eating matzah and bitter herbs, and retelling the story of the Exodus.

Delicious Home Grown Shrimp Is Ready To Serve • 2 tsp. lime juice • 1/2 tsp. chili powder • 1/4 tsp. kosher salt • 1/3 c. chopped cilantro, plus more for serving • 1 lb. medium shrimp, peeled and deveined • 1/3 c. finely diced onion

When it comes to our coastline, we are in such a great region - year round - for the freshest seafood, shellfish.

Because you can go up and down both coasts of Florida and come away with endless amounts of delicious shrimp in all sizes - chefs from all over this region have come up with amazing recipes for these tasty and plentiful residents of our waters.

Today, we have some mouth-watering ways to serve up shrimp, and we are confident that every member of the family will love them all!

CEVICHE • kosher salt • 1 lb. shrimp, peeled and deveined • Juice of 3 limes • Juice of 1 orange • 1/2 c. red onion, diced • 2 jalapeños, minced • 1 c. cucumber, seeded and diced • 1 c. chopped cherry tomatoes • 2 tbsp. chopped fresh cilantro • 1/4 c. mayonnaise • 2 tbsp. Hot sauce • 8 corn tostadas • 1 avocado, sliced

Bring a large pot of well-salted water to a boil. Turn off heat, add shrimp, and poach until shrimp are pink and cooked through, about 3 minutes.

Drain, let cool, then chop shrimp into bite-size pieces. In

a large bowl, combine shrimp with lime juice, orange juice, onion, and jalapeños. Season with salt, then let marinate in the refrigerator, 1 hour.

Stir in cucumber, tomatoes, and cilantro. Taste and adjust seasoning.

Make spicy mayo: In a small bowl, mix together mayo and hot sauce. Spread onto tostadas, then add ceviche.

Top each tostada with sliced avocado and serve immediately.

LEMON GARLIC • 2 tbsp. butter, divided • 1 tbsp. extra-virgin olive oil • 1 lb. medium shrimp, peeled and deveined • 3 cloves garlic, minced • 1 tsp. crushed red pepper flakes • Juice of 1 lemon • 2 tbsp. dry white wine (or water) • Freshly chopped parsley, for garnish

In a large skillet over medium heat, melt 1 tablespoon butter and olive oil. Add shrimp, garlic, and crushed red pepper flakes and cook until shrimp is pink, 3 minutes.

Remove from heat and stir in remaining tablespoon butter, lemon juice, white wine, and parsley.

GARLIC CILANTRO • 4 tbsp. extra-virgin olive oil, divided • 3 cloves garlic, minced

In a small bowl, whisk together 3 tablespoons olive oil, garlic, lime juice, chili powder, salt, and cilantro and pour over shrimp. Mix until all the shrimp are coated. Cover and refrigerate for 10 minutes, or up to 8 hours.

In a skillet over medium-high heat, warm remaining tablespoon olive oil. Add onions and cook until fragrant, 2 to 3 minutes. Add coated shrimp and cook on one side until pink, about 45 seconds, then flip over. Cook until shrimp is cooked through, about 1 minute more.

Serve immediately with extra cilantro, if desired.

BROCCOLI FETTUCINI • kosher salt • 1 lb. fettuccine • Extra-virgin olive oil, for drizzling • 1 head broccoli, cut into florets • 2 tbsp. butter • 2 cloves garlic, minced • 1/4 c. chicken broth • Freshly ground black pepper • 1 lb. shrimp, peeled and deveined • 2 c. tomato sauce • 1/2 c. heavy cream • 1/4 c. chopped fresh parsley

Bring an 8-quart stock pot of water to a boil and generously season with salt. Cook pasta according to package directions until al dente. (Stir frequently as fettuccine tends to stick.) If necessary, stir in a drizzle of olive oil. In the last minute of cooking, add broccoli.

Meanwhile, in a large skillet over medium heat melt butter and sauté with garlic for 2 minutes. Add chicken broth, 1 teaspoon salt, and 1/2 teaspoon pepper and bring to a simmer; toss in shrimp and sauté until pink, about 3 minutes. Transfer shrimp to a bowl and set aside.

Stir in tomato sauce and heavy cream; simmer on low for 5 minutes. Toss in pasta until well combined; add back shrimp and broccoli. Stir until warmed through. Garnish with parsley and serve immediately.
