A WORLDWIDE ISSUE! Horrific Killings In New Zealand Shows That The US Is Not Alone On Gun Control

The attacks on two mosques in Christchurch,

which left 50 people dead, has brought up the now worldwide issue on gun control.

Remember, this was deemed as one of the safest countries on earth

when it came to gun safety - and for those who know the real score - believe it still is.

Two days after this tragedy, a country that this does not happen in,

further illustrated its commitment in making sure that guns do not control the streets in any city in New Zealand, when the cabinet agreed “in principle” to tighten gun control.

It is an issue that Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has been a huge proponent of since she took office.

But all the efforts that went on in the past - and

will continue in the future is going to come down to what we have in this country and many others around the world do. Is it just about guns?

“Gun control always makes it tougher to purchase weapons, there is no doubt,” said former police captain Ellis White, Jr., a seven year Hollywood resident. “But the reality of this - and we continue to preach it - if someone is sick enough to want to kill people they will find a way to get weapons. It’s that simple, and will continue to play out that way.”

As White admits that there is so much effort from manpower to money - to ensure that guns do not fall into the wrong hands, it continues to happen. That mosque tragedy could have been pressure cooker bombs, deadly gasses in the air system & dozens of other ways to kill someone.

Taking Stock in Children is a comprehensive program that will help low-income children succeed by providing college and vocational scholarships, volunteer mentors; student advocates/case managers, tutoring, early intervention and long-term support, high standards, parental involvement, and community support.

Volunteers may tutor, mentor, assist in the classroom, help with fundraising and participate in developing school plans, as well as many other opportunities. Recognition awards promote community involvement as well as highlight outstanding volunteer practices and showcase exemplary projects which are then shared statewide.

While education is clearly an asset to every child, they must also be taught the benefits of common sense which bene-

fits the families and serves the common good of our community. Education is a core value of our democratic society, and it is in everyone’s best-interest to insure that all children receive quality education. Our democracy, as well as our economy, depends on educated citizens and skilled workers with common sense.

Many policymakers, community leaders, and even parents still view schools and student learning as the sole responsibility of educators. While educators take their professional responsibilities seriously, they also recognize that they cannot do it alone. They need and depend on the support from parents and community members.

One dynamic too often observed is that parent involvement in education tends to decline as their children go up in grade, with a dramatic drop once students reach middle school.

The lack of parental involvement is viewed by teachers, administrators, the public, and even parents of school-age children, as the single biggest problem facing our schools drop-outs.

To promote the growth and success of our community at every level we must work with parents, youth and children at every grade and age, and our elected officials for the good of our nation.

Business partnerships are needed in every community to reach our goal.

Parents see lots of road-blocks to getting involved in their child’s well-being which sometimes hinders involvement.

Sometimes their own demanding schedules, prevent for extra time to volunteer or attend school activities, thus make it almost impossible to get involved in bigger ways.

Others reveal how uncomfortable they feel when they try to communicate with school officials, whether that’s due to language or cultural differences or their own past experiences with school, or they lack the know-how and resources to help their child so they express frustration with school bureaucracies or policies they find impossible to understand or change.

Some parents complain that they rarely hear from the school unless there is a problem with their child’s behavior or performance. Do we expect teachers to raise our children; when they are not even allowed to call on God for help?

Others say the information provided by the school is not comprehensible either because of educational jargon or because the parent or family member does not read or understand English.

Some families criticize school personnel for not understanding the plight of single parents, grandparents, foster parents, or other caregivers. Others say they lack transportation.

Most blame the judicial system because they cannot scold or discipline their children the way that they were discipline in a loving family home where discipline must be maintained. To avoid going to jail they step back followed the laws of the land and watch their children run wild and then being thrown into jail. (Give us back our parental rights) The system provide for them to become delinquent, worthless and then blame us.

INVOLVEMENT FRAMEWORK Parenting. Assist families with parenting skills, family support, understanding child and adolescent development, and setting home conditions to support learning at each age and grade level. Assist schools in understanding families’ backgrounds, cultures, and goals for children.

Communicating. Communicate with families about School programs and student progress. (Create twoway) Communication channels between school and home that are effective and reliable.

Volunteering. Improve recruitment and training to involve families as volunteers and as audiences at the center.

Enable educators to work with volunteers who support students and the center.

Provide meaningful work and flexible scheduling.

Learning at Home. Involve families with their children in academic learning at home, including homework, goal setting, and other curriculum-related activities.

Decision Making. Include families as participants

in school decisions, governance, and advocacy activities through school councils or improvement teams, committees, and other organizations.

Collaborating with the Community. Coordinate resources and services for families, students, and other community groups, including businesses, agencies, cultural and civic organizations, colleges or universities.

How can we engage more stakeholders?

Some specific ways that we can engage more parents, families, and communities in education: Develop and pass family-friendly policies and laws [i.e., leaves of absence for parents/caregivers to participate in school or education-related activities; flexible scheduling to encourage participation by diverse families.

Provide professional development on family and community.

Offer training for parents and community stakeholders on effective communications and partnering skills.

Ensure timely access to information, using effective communications tools that address various family structures and are translated into languages that parents/families understand.

Develop an outreach strategy to inform families, businesses, and the community about family involvement opportunities, policies, and programs.

Regularly evaluate the effectiveness of family involvement in programs and activities.

Implement programs for family, and community partnerships.

Faith-based community organizing group.

Evaluate and report parental involvement, support in their children’s academic achievement.

CALL TO ACTION Hollywood Family Youth & Community Enrichment center believes that significantly more emphasis must be placed on the important roles that parents, families, and communities can and must play in raising student Performance and closing achievement gaps.

Encourage parents, families, and communities to become actively engaged in their public schools and become an integral part of school improvement efforts.

Work diligently with Homeless and youth in DJJ, correction/DJJ re-entry, family preservation, homelessness, and leadership strategy.

Assist others with: Grief counseling and referrals for services.

The Health Care Services Section of the Community Partnership Division provides the following programs and services: Mental Health - Provides administration, monitoring and evaluation of contracted service providers for adult mental health services including crisis stabilization, mobile crisis, outpatient psychiatric services, mentoring and consumer support services. The Section will also provide local match assistance to community mental health agencies receiving Florida Department of Children and Families funding for adult mental health services in order to assist those agencies in meeting their local match obligation.

We know that: • Survey says youth drink at rates 26-28% higher * than their peers nationally.

• Almost 1 in 5 high school students in the state * report using marijuana at least once in their life.

• Painkillers and prescription drugs have been • misused by 10% of Hollywood teens.

• Law enforcement and concerned adults struggle • to address the availability of new synthetic • drugs in their communities.

So, what can you do to prevent substance abuse among youth in our community? Where can schools and law enforcement turn for prevention strategies and the latest research? Finally, how can you prevent a child from getting involved in drugs or alcohol? You will find emerging research and trends in our Resources, best practices in the field, specialized training topics, and parent tips, all designed to support a comprehensive, evidence-based prevention approach to promote healthy and successful youth development, while reducing underage drinking and substance abuse overall. Progress and Positive Energy in Hallandale Beach

It was my great honor to deliver our annual State of the City speech to a large group of our City staff members, residents and business owners. The new City Commission hit the ground running and we are not slowing down. For being a small City, we do a lot and provide a wide variety of services. Thank you to our City staff for their hard work, I am extremely proud of what we have accomplished. And of course, our residents and businesses are what make this City a unique and vibrant place to live and work. So thank you for being part of the HB family!

I am so impressed with all the seniors who participated in the Senior Championships recently. They brought some serious energy and proved that you’re never too old to play. I’m already looking forward to next year’s games!

We live in a society, around the globe, that has many who are mentally ill, and while gun laws are always fine, the right to protect yourself is being challenged.

“You always applaud people like Prime Minister Ardern and anyone who is in favor of limiting weapons and how to prevent them from getting on the streets,” Dania Beach resident Angela Morales pointed out. “But those who choose to own weapons - and have passed all the tests to have one - should stop being scrutinized. It’s totally up to people to protect life and property if they choose.”

Whether it’s a killing that happened in Hallandale Beach, Hollywood or any other south Florida community, the gun control debate will continue with very strong feelings on both sides.

That almost beckons someone to look further than the control. Because if a country has that kind of control over who purchases a weapon, the problem goes a lot further.

“When I was on the streets as an officer, one of the things that you tend to find out quickly, if someone wants something - I do not care what it is - they will get it,” White said. “No matter where it is, you will find some mental health disorder will be present in every killing. Many of those killers would never be able to qualify to own a gun. The end result is that sickness drove them to get a weapon, and most of the time, they succeed.

They are NOT thinking like you and I. Believe me.”

The alleged shooter is said to be an Australian citizen. Australia notably tightened its laws after a gunman used a semi-automatic rifle in Port Arthur to kill 35 people in 1996.

Subsequent rules prohibited all automatic and semi-automatic weapons, imposed stringent licensing rules, background checks and waiting periods. A gun buyback pro-

gram led to the destruction of more than 600,000 weapons.

In the end, while nations are coming up with their own ways to deal with gun control, there is a huge issue with mental health - and no matter what anyone tells you - it is the root of everything.

It is not possible to reliably tell whether someone is developing a mental health problem; however, if certain signs appear in a short space of time, it may offer clues: • Smoking and drinking.

• Using drugs more than normal can be an early sign of a mental health issue.

• Withdrawing from people or activities they would normally enjoy.

• Sleeping or eating too much or too little.

• Feeling as if nothing matters.

• Consistently low energy.

• Displaying uncharacteristic emotions.

• Confused.

Hollywood GO Bond Citizens' Oversight Committee - Applications Now Being Accepted

Hollywood - Last week, the City of Hollywood held a Special Election where voters approved funding a variety of city-wide public improvement projects to be funded by a General Obligation Bond (GO Bond) of $165 million. Now that voters have approved the Bond, a 15-member Let's Go Hollywood GO Bond Citizens' Oversight Commit-

tee is being formed. The goal of the Committee is to ensure the funds are spent appropriately and that projects are completed as planned. The Committee will be comprised of 10 members representing neighborhood or civic associations and 5 professionals from various disciplines including architecture, engineering, construction and finance.

FIU Online Spearheads Launch of Statewide Affordable Textbook Initiative FIU Online has spearheaded the launch of a statewide initiative that keeps the costs of textbooks and materials under $60 per course.

Affordability Counts is a faculty-driven program in which professors commit to keeping the cost of materials for their courses at an affordable price. FIU Online, which piloted the initiative, recently launched an online platform that is being adopted by universities across the state of Florida.

“At FIU, we know the cost of class materials is directly connected to a student’s ability to succeed,” said Joseph Riquelme, assistant vice president of FIU Online and creator of the initiative. “The Affordability Counts initiative is focused on providing the resources to assist faculty in selecting lower cost materials that will have an impact on both access and student success.”

According to the U.S. Public Interest Research Group, students pay an average of $153 per course and as much as $1,200 a year for textbooks and materials. To date, 270 courses have been added to the growing list of courses awarded an Affordability Counts medallion, and over 10,000 students have collectively saved more than $750,000 on course materials.

Frimaire Is the Color of Adolescent Sunsetis at The Art & Culture Center

Hollywood - The Art and Culture Center/Hollywood presents Frimaire is the Color of Adolescent Sunset at the Center galleries. The exhibition runs through May 19.

Frimaire is the Color of Adolescent Sunsetis a series of site-specific installations of both local and national artists and educators who explore discoveries between experimentation and academic practice with lighting, sets, sculpture, and performance.

Jane Cassidy, Laura Gomez Bustamante, Peter Symons, and Justin Long are contributing artists. The exhibition is funded in part by a grant from Funding Arts Broward.

Admission to the opening reception is $10 and free for members. Gallery hours are Tuesday – Friday, 10 am – 5 pm and Saturday – Sunday, noon – 4 pm. Regular admission is $7 for adults, $4 for students and seniors, and free for members. The Art and Culture Center galleries are located at 1650 Harrison Street in Hollywood.

ERIC ROSS GALLINSON, 40, currently residing in Clifton, New Jersey passed away suddenly March 12, 2019.

Born in Highland Park, Illinois, he worked and resided in Florida, Philadelphia and New Jersey working in the Audio-Visual Home Theatre industry. Students looking for courses with low-cost materials can look up their professors on the website and see if they have made the pledge.

“One of the reasons I became a professor was to teach the next generation of leaders. However, for many students, finances are a roadblock,” said Lukas Danner, an international relations professor in FIU’s Steven J. Green School of International and Public Affairs who has taken the affordable book pledge. “Affordability Counts helps our students finish what they started. It’s our way of contributing to their success.”

The website allows faculty at all Florida state universities to find low-cost materials by searching a database of courses using the state’s common numbering system. The course materials in the database come from a wide array of disciplines and can be used for courses in many degree programs. Faculty can also submit their courses to become Affordability Counts certified and receive their medallion status on the website.

The pianist has dedicated this recital to Miami International Piano Festival co-founder Edith Sorin celebrating her 103rd birthday.

If you are only to experience one music festival a season, the Miami International Piano Festival is a great choice. The festival lines up international stars, up-and-comers and programs that feature different ideas and concepts. One of those international stars is Jorge Luis Prats, whose career has experienced a dramatic ascent since his first recital at this festival in 2007.

A special performance will be held on Saturday, March 24 to honor Miami International Piano Festival co-founder Edith Sorin on her 103rd birthday.

“A Cuban marvel: Jorge Prats…this master pianist is like no other.” BBC Music Magazine Prats achieved success early in his career, winning first prize at the famed Concours Marguerite Long – Jacques Thibaud in Paris, but the Cuban government later limited performances outside of Cuba. He all but disappeared from the international concert stage for many years. After his arrival in Miami he met Edith Sorin and Giselle Brodsky, co-founders of the Miami International Piano Festival. Their enthusiasm and support were instrumental in making the music world aware of Prats’s prodigious talent.

Prats has since been hailed as a long-lost virtuoso in the grand tradition. His debut recitals at the prestigious “Meister Pianisten” series at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam were received with standing ovations. In 2010 he returned to the same series for the third time,

an honor uniquely reserved for Brendel and Sokolov previously. A crowd-pleasing performer, his concert tours have taken him throughout Europe, the Americas, China, Japan and Korea. He has performed as a soloist with the Royal Philharmonic in London, the BBC Orchestra, and many more. His recordings include a Decca release of a live recital in Zaragoza Spain.

Jorge Luis Prats EDITH SORIN was born in Calgary, Canada. After attending the University of Toronto and Royal School of Music In London, she received a full scholarship to the Juilliard School in New York, the first Canadian to do so. She remained at Juilliard for ten years as a faculty member and also taught at Manhattanville College.

After moving to Florida, Mrs. Sorin continued private teaching, guiding many pianists who have since have achieved successful careers. As she reaches 103, she is still sharing her experience and knowledge with young pianists as a mentor in both music and life. She is the co-founder of Patrons of Exceptional Artists and has served actively on the board since 1997.

North Miami Beach - On Sunday, March 17 the City of North Miami Beach welcomed over 2,000 residents for the fourth annual Ciclovía bicycle ride. The event is part of Miami-Dade County’s Bike305 initiative.

The 3-mile community bike ride traveled alongside Snake Creek Canal, recently featured as one of Bike305’s Top Cycling Trails and ranked the “Seventh Most Scenic Bike Ride” in Miami Dade County. Local 10 News Anchor Parker Branton served as the master of ceremonies.

An initiative spearheaded by Miami-Dade County,

Bike305 promotes cycling as a way to connect people to communities by using the existing miles of safe off-road trails, paths, greenways and on-road bikeways.

As part of the City’s commitment to promoting a healthy lifestyle and outdoor activities to youth, members of the Commission presented a $1,000 check to North Miami Beach Senior High School for having the most students participate. ITALIAN FOOD IS ALWAYS THE POPULAR CHOICE Pasta Carbonara and Chicken In A Skillet Will Please Every Member of the Family

When it comes to Italian food, very few people will tell you that they do not like it.

From chicken and fish - to beef, pork and pasta, there are so many dishes to enjoy and serve to family and friends.

Today, we bring you a chicken dish, along with Pasta Carbonara. Enjoy!

PASTA CARBONARA • 12 oz. spaghetti • 8 slices bacon • 3 large eggs, whisked • 1 c. freshly grated Parmesan • kosher salt • Freshly ground black pepper In a large pot of salted boiling water, cook spaghetti according to package directions until al dente. Drain, reserving 1 cup pasta water, and return to pot.

Meanwhile, in a large skillet over medium-low heat,

cook bacon. Transfer slices to a paper towel-lined plate to let drain, then chop. Reserve fat.

Reduce heat to low, then add spaghetti to bacon fat and toss until fully coated. Pour over whisked eggs and cheese and stir vigorously until creamy (be careful not to scramble eggs). Add pasta water a couple tablespoons a time until saucy.

Season generously with salt and pepper and stir in bacon.

ITALIAN CHICKEN SKILLET • 2 tbsp. extra-virgin olive oil • 1 lb. boneless skinless chicken breasts • kosher salt • Freshly ground black pepper • 1/2 onion, thinly sliced • 2 bell peppers, thinly sliced • 2 medium zucchini, sliced into half moons • 2 cloves garlic, minced

• 1/2 tsp. dried oregano • 1 c. chicken broth • 14 oz. can crushed tomatoes • 1/4 c. fresh basil, torn

In a large skillet over medium-high heat, heat oil.

Season chicken on both sides with salt and pepper and cook until golden and cooked through, about 6 minutes per side. Transfer to a plate.

To skillet, add onion and peppers; sauté until softened, 5 minutes. Add zucchini and cook until slightly charred, 3 minutes more, then add garlic and cook until fragrant.

Sprinkle veggies with dried oregano and stir to incorporate.

Deglaze pan with chicken broth and crushed tomatoes. Stir and let come to a boil. Once boiling, reduce to a simmer and let cook for 10 minutes; add chicken back to skillet and spoon sauce over.

Garnish with basil and serve.
