2016 Hurricane Preparedness Forum gets area residents ready for the season

Almost 100 residents joined Hallandale Beach Fire Rescue Interim Chief Mark Ellis for the 2016 Hurricane Preparedness Forum at the Cultural Community Center last Thursday. Residents learned how to prepare and what to expect if an evacuation is called during a storm. Getting together before the event to brief residents are, from left, Broward County Emergency Manager, Interim Chief Mark Ellis, Mary Francis Jeannot, Hallandale Beach Public Works, and Barry Wilkinson, Florida Power & Light. The speakers discussed the improvements and advancements learned since Hurricane Wilma passed over the area in 2005 and how residents should not become complacent. Plan ahead and have an emergency plan in place should a storm approach. (Photo courtesy City of Hallandale Beach Public Relations)

An entire apartment building can become “sick” from water leaks which turn into mold causing respiratory problems, headaches and rashes in some people. But mold from leaks can also be served up a la carte, one apartment at a time. Although both new and old apartments are at risk, experts say water leak problems are increasingly cropping up in new-construction apartments. Sealed up more tightly, "they don't breathe as much, and if there is some kind of leak or water damage, mold can grow," says 1st Priority, a water damage and mold remediator, a South Florida-based property damage restoration company.
