City hosts outstanding BF James Park grand opening as Parks Department continues to shine in the spotlight

By Mayor Joy Cooper HALLANDALE BEACH The city hosted a wonderful BF James Park grand opening on Saturday. Under the leadership of Director Cathie Schanz, the Parks Department in partnership with the “One Hallandale” Committee and organized a celebration that was exciting entertaining and most importantly inclusive. The Teen Zone students put on, was a wonderful act with the singing of a song that was created by them in honor of our city. There were prayers offered in honor of our past, present and future. Poems read and stories told of the rich history of the Park and the original pool. Many local vendors served food and drinks and we all danced to Junkanoo!

Mr. BF James was a teacher and principal at the African American School on the BF James site when the system was segregated. I spoke about the irony that this park was being dedicated the same month we are recognizing the 50th Anniversary of the Civil Rights Act. It was not planned that way but it was an important message to remind everyone, young and old that our goal is still working to make our city “One Hallandale” where everyone

has equal access to services and amenities.

Our entire city staff did an amazing job on managing the park project and Burkhart built another great park on schedule and under budget. The park was a few weeks’ early and $30,000 dollars was given back to our city. Once again, there is still more than simply guarding and saving taxpayers’ dollars we want to keep our dollars in our city. With our Community Benefit Program, CBP .52 percent of all dollars spent on the park were kept in our community. That is over $2.5 million dollars going to local workers, contactors, subcontractors and vendors. If you own a business in our city or are a homesteaded resident in our city and own your own business, you need to make sure you register your business with us. We give preference to you when we buy goods and services.

This park is the 2nd in our Parks Master Plan.

The beach parks are under construction and are anticipated to be open in December and early January. I apologize in behalf of the city for any inconveniences that our residents and beach goers are having due to construction. The parks are open, it is just that south beach park will

have no amenities or parking until the completion. North beach has parking and bathrooms.

This is all for safety and health reasons. Our lifeguards are all on duty and our beaches will remain open.

Parks are a vital component of our community. Many residents have wanted our parks upgraded so we embarked on the development our Parks Master Plan. This plan is not the commissions but it is your plan that was created through months of community forums and workshops. As a result of those plans, we have utilized your taxpayer dollars on three parks and will have four parks completed. There are other parks that need to be done but they will not be done at todays’ costs and within six years without voter approval.

The decision will, do you want to “play it forward”? The parks can be done with a Government Obligation Bond. The GO Parks Bond will provide that the city can borrow money at today’s rates and pay it back through debt service. This is like taking a mortgage to buy a home. Parks are for everyone. We want them to be world class like many of the voters have told us over the past years. If the bond does

not pass, it would take over twenty years. As a city, we cannot advocate but we can educate. We have had staff put together information that can help you decide. www.gohallandaleparks.com.

There is really something for everyone in our plan. Brand new Bluesten Park completed with competition swimming pool, interactive water features, indoor fitness recreation center, regulation soccer and basketball. New Kayak and Paddle Board rentals at Chaves Lake.

In addition, all of the other parks: Sunrise, Sunset and Ingalls will get a face lift too!

tractors save time and track the permitting progress.

The City will launch the new EnerGov software system in the Development Services Division on Monday, July 28. Among the features of the new software are: The ability to perform concurrent plan reviews using digitized drawings.

Field inspectors will use tablets to post in-

stantaneous inspection results.

A new online userfriendly program to view results, or request inspections, and accepting online payments.

Also, the new system will assign separate permit numbers to each trade working within the project. This allows the contractor to track each phase of the inspection process without having to sort through the per-

The City will be sending contractors and builders with active permits a letter with the old

permit number, the new EnerGov permit number and the IVR code. The informational meeting next Thursday will include a question and answer session to assist builders and contractors make the transition.

"I entered the first year because everyone at home kept telling me that I eat fast and that I should get in a contest," Manresa said. "When I finished second, I knew that the following year, I could win this thing."

This scene played itself out so many times over the past month – as south Florida embraced the World Cup like never before. It was perhaps the largest event ever to take place where the entire world was watching every move, goal, save and yellow card that was handed out.

“There is nothing like this,” Gonzalez, a Hollywood resident said. “The Super Bowl, World Series, NBA championship. Nothing is close to the magnitude of this event.”

Gonzalez was right. Whether you cheered for Argentina or Germany on Sunday, what this showcase has been for so many in various countries around the world is pride. Pride that Americans found out firsthand this year by getting to the Round of 16, before losing to Belgium.

While Germany won the tremendous games 1-0 in extra time, this was all about coming to together and celebrating and having a great time.

As crowds formed throughout south Florida on Sunday, it was indeed evident that the German’s were not the favorites in this area of the world. Too many Argentinian fans like Cassy Moreno and her friends who started to cheer on her team way before the 3 p.m start.

“This is what this sport does for a country,” Moreno said. “I have been a soccer fan all of my life, and to put into perspective what it means to reach the finals of this sport is beyond words.”

Moreno, who has four brothers, found out early what national pride was all about. As a youngster growing up, the TV was always set to soccer and that’s what has driven her all of her life.

“When your father and brothers grow up watching this sport and are driven to cheers of joy and sadness, you have to get involved and embrace it,” she said. “We love the sport, but much more, we love our country.”

A GLOBAL EVENT While German pride was also evident at many different venues across south Florida, this World Cup was all about finally embracing this sport – like none other before.

Whether it was the host team Brazil, Argentina, Costa Rica, Spain, Chile, Colombia, Honduras, Russia or the United States, the enthusiasm spread quickly to areas such as Aventura, where population of the community is home to more than 40 different countries, many who packed local restaurants and bars to root on their teams.

“This was so exciting at so many levels,” said Ricky Rojas, who was born in America, but has family from Colombia and Ecuador. “No matter where you went in this community during the World Cup, the spirit was high and the games were competitive.”

As many of the Central and South American programs are always well represented in south Florida, Aventura has a huge German, English, French and Russian representation as well.

With so much pride in his country, Marco Mueller perhaps had the most to celebrate as his cousin, Mario Gotze, ended up scoring the winning goal. He watched every game of the World Cup, including the finals and this North Miami Beach resident never took off his cousin’s jersey. In fact, he has been back to his native country several times to watch many of the individuals play.

“I follow all the players on the German team on the internet,” he said. “Not matter if they play in Germany, Spain or for professional English teams. I love soccer at its very finest.”

Mueller remembers when USA’s head coach Jurgen Klinsmann played for the German national team and was a decent player.

“I have followed soccer since I was 5,” he said. I am 53 now, so I guess I can take you back to 1974 when we won it all in Munich.

"The hot dogs this year were harder to eat," he said. "I think that was the thing that really made things a little tougher, but I won and that was great."

For his title this year, eating nine hot dogs and buns in the three minutes, Manresa took home the $500 first place prize, but it wasn't easy.

For Manresa, the wait was perhaps the toughest thing. He was in the very first group and had to endure five rounds of watching and hoping that his nine would stand up.

"When Michael (Jenkins) started eating, I knew that he could be one that may beat me," Manresa explained. "But he fell short. Nick also did very well, so it was very close this year."

For contestants like Mark Wilson, things looked a lot easier than they were. He came to the event hungry, but when he began to eat, found out that it was not going to be a breeze.

Hollywood CRA rolls-out an Anti-Littering Campaign on Hollywood Beach

STOP LITTER ON HOLLYWOOD BEACH! Sweep clean-ups.

Beach Sweeps are conducted on the second Saturday of the every month from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. Volunteers meet at Charnow Park, which is located at Garfield Street and A1A. The City’s Department of Public Works provides garbage bags and gloves for the volunteers to collect litter and cigarette butts from the beach. Volunteers must be at least 8 years-old and all children must be accompanied by an adult.

Proper attire such as

closed toe shoes is required and hats and sunscreen are recommended. Parking passes will be issued at the registration table and must be placed on your vehicle dashboard.

The Anti-Littering Campaign Whether intentional or accidental, all litter is preventable. The “please & thank you” approach has not worked. In developing the anti-littering campaign for Hollywood Beach, the Hollywood CRA decided sweettalk is less effective than straight talk.

“We will be direct, to the point and adamant in our messaging: STOP LITTERING! We understand that in order to be effective, we need to speak to those who litter versus those who don’t,” says Jorge Camejo, Hollywood CRA Executive Director.

The first wave of the campaign is now in place with the installation of more than 40 light post banners along the Hollywood Beach Broadwalk.

These banners creatively depict debris left on the sand and in the water in shapes that reflect various marine creatures from crabs to sea turtles to jellyfish.

The message reads “STOP LITTERING, You are not alone” and let’s litter bugs know fines of up to $500 can be imposed for those caught littering. There will soon be decorative wraps on trash bins and 13 electrical cabinets on the beach.

Make the most of your garden goodies • If you want to be able to enjoy your hard work all year long and incorporate your vegetables into meals throughout the winter, though, there's still some work to be done (BPT) - You've spent the summer tending and nurturing vegetables that have flourished, and now you have such an abundance of tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers and leafy greens, your home is starting to resemble the produce section of a grocery store.

Too often people don’t use this medication, and they pay for it, both physically and mentally, in many ways…What is the pill of fairness?... It’s the dedication that one makes to interact with others only if it’s on an even playing field. Now some people are unfair to others, while some are unfair to themselves… As a therapist, it is the latter that I most often see enter my office, and it is to these folks I write this article.

It saddens me to see so many people who are unfair to themselves… They are some of the sweetest souls on this planet; kind, empathetic, and always giving way more to others than they get in return… Now don’t get me wrong, giving to others is a blessing, and charitable work demands no payback, but when you continuously base relationships on giving to others who do not reciprocate in kind, you can expect eventually to deteriorate both mentally, and physically…

Over the long run most relationships fail based upon unfair dynamics, and are usually part of a cycle of many similar failed relationships. Whether it be trying to please the unloving mother, the over-demanding father, or the abusive husband, a relationship will end up being an unhappy one, unless fairness is demanded as a core ingredient to remain in the relationship.

Now with all this being said, one cannot expect exact fairness all of the time. Life can be unfair…, and what exactly is fair may be different in the eyes of the beholder… In any relationship there are times when you have to give a bit more than you receive. Fairness is not about counting nickels. It’s about expecting the similar consideration and respect you give others. It’s about not passively drudging through life feeling like a stepped on door-mat and expecting anti-depressant drugs to make everything all right.

Try the pill called fairness, and you just may be able to throw those anti-depressants away.

When disaster strikes, will your pets be safe?

(BPT) - Americans living in areas prone to severe storms, floods, earthquakes or other natural disasters may be well aware of the philosophy, "Hope for the best, but plan for the worst." Families with a disaster plan in place will be better equipped to stay safe and recover from an emergency. Too often, however, even the best planners forget to include provisions for the four-legged members of the family.

"When disaster strikes, families may not have much time to act," says Dr. Ellen I. Lowery, associate director of U.S. professional and veterinary affairs at Hill's Pet Nutrition. "While organizations like Hill's, through our Disaster Relief Network, strive to help families and pets in the wake of natural disasters, it's important to have a disaster plan ready, including a well-stocked Pet Emergency Go-Kit with food, water and other essentials for your pet."

Dr. Lowery offers some guidance for putting your "Pet Emergency Go-Kit" together: * Include first aid supplies and a first aid guide book for pets. * Keep three-day supplies of both your pet's favorite food - in a waterproof container - and bottled water. * Store an extra safety harness and leash because even the best-behaved pet may be frightened in an ermergency, causing him to run and hide. * Include waste cleanup supplies. It's important to properly dispose of pet waste to avoid adding health concerns to an already difficult situation. * If your pet is on any medications, keep a few days' worth in your kit. Also include an up-to-date copy of medical records, as well as contact information for your veterinarian and additional veterinary and pet care organizations in your area. * You should have a brief, written explanation of your pet's feeding routine, personality and any behavioral issues. In a disaster, your pet may receive care from someone who doesn't know him as well as you do. * Don't forget comfort - include a few toys and a favorite blanket to keep your pet comfortable.

Keep your Pet Go-Kit somewhere readily accessible in an emergency. Be sure your pet always wears his/her identification - a microchip or collar ID tag with up-to-date information may help reunite you with your pet if you become separated in the confusion of a disaster scene.

If an impending disaster requires you to evacuate, take your pet with you. Be aware of your pet's favorite hiding places so you'll know where to look when you're in a hurry to leave.

Before disaster strikes, identify locations where you could take your pet during an evacuation; not all disaster shelters for people will be open to pets. Look for pet-friendly hotels or motels, or ask relatives and friends if they could accommodate you and your pets.

Despite your best efforts, it may not be possible to take your pet with you. To alert first responders to the possible presence of a pet in the house, place a pet rescue decal on your front door or window. It should include your veterinarian's contact information and any special notes about your pet's personality or medical needs. Carry a picture of your pet in case you become separated.

"Pet displacement during natural disasters is such a serious issue, the federal government has even enacted standards for evacuating and transporting pets during disasters," Dr. Lowery says. "One widely quoted report cited Hurricane Katrina as an example of what can happen to pets during a natural disaster. The report said more than 200,000 pets were displaced during the storm, and the majority of them were never reunited with their families."

Last year, Hill's launched the Disaster Relief Network, a first-of-its-kind national system that allows the company to quickly coordinate pet food deliveries in response to natural disasters. Since its inception, the network has delivered free food to more than 50 shelters and veterinary clinics in response to floods, forest fires, tornados and mudslides.

Bring variety to foods served at your picnics and cookouts (BPT) - The warmer months are the perfect time to enjoy meals outdoors, so head out to the backyard or the local park for a sunlit lunch or a breezy, laidback dinner. Your family probably has some favorite picnic menu items they frequently request, but if you're looking to inject some new life into those traditional foods, try the following: * Add sparkle to your salad - Gelatin salads are quick and easy to prepare a day or two in advance of your picnic.

If you're interested in giving your gelatin salad a bit of pizzazz, consider using ginger ale or soda water instead of plain water. Or, if your party is for adults only, Champagne or a sparkling wine will give the salad a fun new flavor twist. * Spice up the grill Grilled meat is always a top choice for picnics, and it's an area where you can explore many different flavors to accompany the meat.

Take advantage of the growing season by adding chopped

sauces like fruit salsa or pico de gallo to your cooked meats. The fresh flavors of fruits and vegetables from your garden or found at a local farmers market will quickly transform steak, chicken, pork and fish into a new meal. Make the sauce ahead of time so the flavors can meld. Once the meat is cooked, remove from grill and place on plate. Spoon the sauce on top and serve. * Give side dishes a new style - Potato salad is a staple side dish for a classic picnic get-together. This summer, consider trying something new with your traditional recipe.

Hashbrowns are a great way to give your salad new texture and taste without straying too far from the traditional German-style potato salad recipe. And to make your picnic menu even easier, Hungry Jack Original Hashbrown Potatoes cook quickly and allow you to skip the whole potato peeling and cutting process. The following Hashbrown Potato

Salad recipe will delight all who attend your next outdoor gathering.

HASHBROWN POTATO SALAD 1 carton (4.2 oz.) Hungry Jack Original Hashbrowns 3-4 strips diced bacon 1/3 cup chopped onion 1/3 cup mayonnaise 3 tablespoons cider vinegar 1 tablespoon granulated sugar 1/2 cup diced red bell pepper 1/2 cup thinly sliced celery 2 tablespoons chopped parsley Baby spinach or greens

for serving Directions: Add hot water to hashbrown potatoes per package instructions. Let stand for 12 minutes. Drain well.

Heat a 9 or 10-inch nonstick skillet over medium-low heat. Add bacon and onion; cook while stirring frequently until bacon is done and fat is rendered, which should take 10-15 minutes. Stir in potatoes.

Cover pan and cook potatoes on low heat for 5 minutes, stirring once. Potatoes do not need to brown. Remove pan from heat. In

a separate small bowl, stir together mayonnaise, vinegar and sugar. Add mayonnaise mixture to potatoes, along with bell pepper, celery and parsley, and mix well. Serve warm or room temperature on a bed of greens.

Variation: For a lighter version, use light mayonnaise or substitute 2 tablespoons olive oil for mayonnaise. * Dessert with a surprise - Frozen fruit pops are a popular picnic dessert option and nothing is better than the homemade version.
