Communication is key in police relations Even though the community meetings between police and residents may not lead to anything concrete, it’s a start in building back trust By Larry Blustein sfsuntimes@aol.com As Hallandale Beach residents Keith Proctor and his girlfriend, MaryAnne Wilcox headed to a recent Coffee With A Cop event in the city, it was indeed a major reminder of the times we are living in. Every week, there is a national news story alleging police abuse of force and the resulting reaction from the affected community. At this time when American policing faces a crisis of community confidence, a good working relationship between the police chief and city man-

ager is crucial to the proper functioning of the local police department. While the community police events that are held in Hallandale Beach, Hollywood and so many other communities in south Florida are not really well attended yet, you can chalk it up to being a start. At least, that is what many residents are believing. The relationship between any police department and its citizens cannot be strained. Not if things are going to improve. “As a kid, I grew up respecting and admiring the police in my hometown,”

said Proctor. “But now, I have to attend these things to get out the frustrations of what has been going on. These are indeed some of the worst times we have lived in. I just felt that I needed to go and say what is on my mind - instead of yelling at my TV, every time you see police shoot someone.” As many want to point the finger and blame all of these police-related shootings on the economy or social media or anything else that may be a boiling point - it goes Police, Page 6A

Hallandale Beach Police Chief Dwayne Flournoy (second from left) has been getting out in the community plenty, talking with residents.

Raising the culinary bar Carini’s Pizza and Pasta is truly Italian cuisine at its very freshest - and finest This computer rendering of Federal Highway shows the type of development that would be encouraged along this corridor, which is part of Hollywood’s Regional Activity Center, under the new zoning.

Community Meeting for Hollywood Regional Activity Center Rezoning HOLLYWOOD - The City of Hollywood and the North Central Hollywood Civic Association (NCHCA) will be hosting a public meeting at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, September 6 at Hollywood City Hall, 2600 Hollywood Boulevard, Room 219, to provide information on proposed zoning changes for Hollywood’s Re-

gional Activity Center (RAC). While the area was designated a Regional Activity Center in 1990 and subsequently expanded in 2005, the current zoning does not match the previously established RAC Land Use designation. Hollywood, Page 6A
