REMEMBERING 9-11

Ten years later and the wounds are still deep as we cope in a different world

The feeling I get in my stomach when I think back 10 years to Sept. 11, 2001 is something that will never leave my body or mind.

Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2001 started out like any normal work day. In the office early, getting things ready for the newspaper that week. It was the same

routine that I had followed for over two decades. Just before 9 a.m., I can recall as clear as day when the phone rang at the office and

The very popular David Schwartz, known for supplying Twinkies to the tournament players, won the Dan LeBatard 790 The Ticket Poker Tournament at Dania Jai-Alai last night. Schwartz took home $2,800 and the trophy, even though the last seven players agreed to “chop.” The remaining six players each received $1,200 in the $79 Buyin tourney. someone who was calling to say hi. "You need to turn the TV on quickly," she said with a quiver in her voice. "Something just hit the World Trade Center in New York. It appears to be an airplane that went off course." Little did any of us know at the time, but this was no accident, and by the time I turned on the TV to see smoke billowing from the north tower, another object entered the screen on the black and white television set that was next to my desk. Right there in front of my eyes was another passenger plane, striking the south tower. I was so overcome by what I had just watched on TV, it

The rate of change in the age profile shows some variability among EU countries, but there is little doubt that, overall, the European population is aging. This can be attributed to a number of factors, such as: greater awareness of lifestyle and its relationship to health, and improved technologies for managing disease. Chronic disease, including oral disease, continues to be prevalent in older adults, and its management is costly and challenging for society in general and healthcare professionals in particul–––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– BOBADILLA, Page 6A

‘AROUND THE CITY OF CHOICE’

Ten year anniversary of 9-11 will be a somber remembrance

HALLANDALE BEACH - This Sunday marks the 10th anniversary of 9-11. Many communities will be paying tribute to the many first responders, public workers and citizens that lost their lives on that tragic day. This day has not been memorialized as a national holiday, but every year since 2002 proclamations have been issued by both President Bush and President Obama designating the day in various acts and resolutions. It has been recognized as Patriots Day and in 2009 September 11 was designated as National Day of Service and Remembrance under the Serve America Act. In September of 2009 and 2010 the tradition was continued. This year on July 22 the Senate unanimously passed a bipartisan resolution sponsored by New Jersey Senator Frank Lautenberg establishing a National Moment of Remembrance at 1 PM to memorialize and collectively pay tribute to the victims of the terrorist attacks. Senator Lautenberg has requested that mayors across the country join in solidarity and encourage all first responders

and houses of worship to ring their bells and sound their sirens at 1 PM for one full minute on September 11. This will be an opportunity to take a minute of reflection and remember the victims and the many men and women that made the ultimate sacrifice while trying to save their fellow citizens. Our city will also be conducting our 9-11 Memorial Service at our Main Fire Station on Southwest 3rd Street and 1st Avenue from 9am to 11am. Our department has created a wonderful monument dedicated to all our first responders. It is incumbent on all of us to ensure that 9-11 will never end. This date should never be just another day. Please try to take a moment to “Stop and Remember” at 1 PM by ceasing all work and other activities.

Mark the moment in an appropriate manner by ringing bells, blowing whistles and sounding sirens. In addition to our memorial service on Friday September 9th from 9 to 4 there will be a Blood Drive at our Community Cultural Center. Since 911 our country has been engaged in the global war on terrorism. The attacks on 9-11 were the result of Al Qaeda and their extremist mission against all Christians, Jews and Americans. Regretfully this extremist group of terrorists has created great animosity towards all Muslims. The Muslim Community has created a campaign to promote religious tolerance throughout the nation. They have partnered with community blood banks around the nation to organize blood drives as a way to join with fellow residents in a day of service. September 7 marked the official end of summer break. Many other items besides the budget were addressed during the commission meetings in July that I have not had the chance to cover. One of those issues was the hiring of an Acting City Attorney and the implementation of a

process to fill the vacant City Attorney position. The City Commission directed the City Attorney to contact three firms that may be interested in filling in as Acting City Attorney for a capped amount not to exceed $24,750 per month for two months. This figure was suggested by Commissioner Lewy based on a monthly cost for the inside attorney. This was agreed to by a majority, with one dissenting opinion. He contacted three firms; Weiss, Serota, Helfman, Pastoriza Cole and Boniske; Nabors, Giblin and Nickerson and Goren, Cherof, Doody and Ezrol. Sam Goren Esq. did not want to offer their service. Weiss Serota offered a flat rate of $30,000 not including litigation and Nabors offered $18,000 with litigation other then labor law. Weiss Serota has worked successfully on ligation with our city and currently represents the city on labor matters and they have a large local municipal base of clients with offices in Broward and Dade Counties. Nabors has an office in Fort Lauderdale, Tampa and Tallahassee with a focus on governmental law and a larger

presence in the northern regions of the state. Due to the price difference, the commission voted to retain Nabors for two months since the attorney assigned to us was a former Broward County attorney. After the selection, I briefed the commission on the in house process we utilized to hire the former City Manager. At that time the City Commission advertised the position and had Staff review applications for meeting the minimum requirements. The Commission then ranked and selected the short list of 15 and then narrowed it down for the next round of the process. The Commission did not want to proceed with interviews as the majority wanted to stay in house. The Commission debated whether we wanted to remain with an in house attorney or move to an outside contract. It was decided we wanted to keep both options open. The Commission directed Staff to post and advertize to fill the position permanently, including the ability for individuals and firms to apply with a response deadline of August 31st. The City Commission also agreed that rather than have

Staff work on the process we would appoint a committee of five individuals to select five finalists and then the City Commission would have the option to add 5 more. The committee was appointed at yesterdays September 7th commission meeting and the city received approximately 30 candidates.

SPOTLIGHT ON HOLLYWOOD

City of Hollywood is scheduled to hold a ballot referendum on whether to dramatically cut pension benefits to its employees

Dear Neighbors, As of this writing, on September 13, 2011, the City of Hollywood is scheduled to hold a ballot referendum on whether to dramatically cut pension benefits to its employees. This article is not going to tell you how you should vote, and nothing contained in this article should be construed that way. Hopefully, this article will provide you some useful information on the proposed changes. Months ago, the City of Hollywood created a preliminary Operating Budget based on the assumption that about 8.5 million dollars in savings would be realized through pension reductions. Because this balanced budget already includes these anticipated savings that leaves two likely outcomes from the election. If the ballot questions pass, millions of pension savings will accrue, as the City had planned, and benefits to employees will be lessened. If the ballot questions fail, the City will have to make up

Blustein

Peter Bober

the planned pension saving through other cuts. Since our proposed balanced budget assumes 8.5 million dollars in pension savings, if those savings are not, in fact, realized, then the City of Hollywood will be faced with additional employee layoffs, additional employee wage and benefit reductions, reductions in City services and/or privatization of City services. There is no referendum outcome that is a pleasant. But, it is reality. Anyone seeking to understand Hollywood’s current financial situation needs to understand several basic facts. First, over 75% of our entire

General Fund budget goes to pay people and pay benefits to people. We are a service business after all, and because personnel related costs are our biggest expense, if we want to make meaningful operational cost reductions, there are few alternatives but to reduce personnel related expenses. As we prepare to adopt the City’s 2012 budget, we are facing a 38 million dollar gap between revenues and expenditures. That number is jawdropping. But, the reality is that the economy is faltering, foreclosures are still soaring, pension costs are high, day-to-day expenses continue to rise, consumer spending is down and the revenues coming into City Hall have dropped. It is as plain as that. And, when the Federal Reserve commits to virtually non-existent interest rates for the next two years, what does that tell you about the economic forecast for the short term? With these facts in mind, anyone who believes

From Page 1A ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– through wars and watched devastation taking place before their very eyes, had that same feeling in the pit of their stomach. What so many had feared would one day happen, did indeed take place as the world watched terrorism unfold right before their very eyes. In what was one of the most cowardly acts any of us had ever witnessed. Terrorist groups with so much hatred toward this country that they blindly took thousands of lives - many who were born in Saudi Arabia, Iraq and other breeding grounds for such hostility. Showing that there was no regard for life, airplanes were flown into buildings in a rage so intense that 10 years later there is so much anger and resentment in this country for basically anyone who is an outsider, and while it has come back to hurt those who mean no harm to this country, it put in all of our minds that we simply cannot trust anyone. It is because of that day many of our men and women who defend our freedom - at home and abroad - have lost lives in war efforts around the world to ward off such vicious attacks on our, or any other soil around the world. What happened on Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2001 was something that we had felt that would never happen. Not in this country. To that magnitude. But it did, changing the course of the future in such a dramatic way that we live and feel it in our everyday lives. This Sunday is a time when all of us - as human beings - and not just Americans - have to reflect on how all of our lives have been changed. This is not just about the United States of America. This is a global issue, and just because it didn't happen in England, Tokyo, Madrid, Sydney or Belfast, it is indeed your worry as well. Terrorists are bullies who push, and push and push some more until you stand up against them. Over the past 10 years, this world has more than stood up to this fight, getting those who are responsible. There are so many events taking place this Sunday around our communities to remember and pray for those who lost special people in their lives to a day that is simply called 9-11!

you can continue to operate just as before—without substantive, systemic and objective expense reductions—is living on another planet. This is not just a Hollywood problem. Pick up the newspaper and you will see this happening in other cities and states throughout the rest of the country. Public employees, who bust their butts to provide quality services to residents every day, cannot and should not be vilified for the budget shortfalls facing cities as a result of the country’s economic meltdown. We, as elected officials, must take accountability for what we do and how we spend taxpayer dollars. We have to ask the question: Based on Hollywood’s actual, current financial position, what benefits can we actually afford to pay if we are to remain a financially solvent City? When people say “live within your means,” this is what we are talking about. Based on 2010 statistics, the average Police or Fire pension for an individual is higher than 75 percent of all household incomes in Hollywood. We have employees retiring right now, at age 45, who will receive $100,000 per year for the rest of their lives. That is unsustainable. And, while some have suggested we should just increase the tax rate to cover the whole cost of our employee pension program, that would require a tax increase on residents of 27 percent. That, I cannot support. The election slated for September 13,

2011 is significant, and your vote is important. I am not going to tell you how to vote since I think you can handle that part. The results of the election will have serious consequences, and predictably, the turnout will be thin. The few people who show up to vote will decide an issue of critical significance for all Hollywood’s 143,000 residents. As you decide what you will be doing on September 13, 2011, I will leave you with a thought. There are American

men and women all over the world who are fighting and dying to make sure you have the right to cast that vote. And so, because voter turnouts of 8% are particularly embarrassing to all residents, please vote and encourage other residents to do the same. While tension is high about the issues I have written about, I hope we can all agree that voting is the least we can do to honor our servicemen and servicewomen. Sincerely, Mayor Peter Bober

ABOUT THE AHMADIYYA MUSLIM COMMUNITY: The Ahmadiyya Muslim Community is a dynamic, fast-growing international revival movement within Islam. Founded in 1889, the Community spans 200 countries with membership exceeding tens of millions. Ahmadiyya Muslim Community USA, established in 1920, is the first American-Muslim organization.

Ahmadiyya Muslim Community is the only Islamic organization to believe that the longawaited messiah has come in the person of Mirza Ghulam Ahmad (1835-1908) of Qadian. Ahmad claimed to be the metaphorical second coming of Jesus of Nazareth and the divine guide, whose advent was foretold by the Prophet of Islam, Muhammad. The Community believes that God sent Ahmad, like Jesus, to end religious wars, condemn bloodshed and reinstitute morality, justice and peace. Ahmad’s advent has brought

about an unprecedented era of Islamic

revival. He divested Muslims of fanatical

beliefs and practices by vigorously champi-

oning Islam’s true and essential teachings.

When Linda’s air conditioner quit working, it was 90 degrees outside and she was expecting house guests. “I was sure their visit would be miserable for them, as well as for my family,” she says. “I figured it would take several days to get it repaired.” But when Linda called Cool Air USA, the company sent a trained, certified technician out immediately. “The problem was fixed within hours,” she recalls. “The technician was friendly and courteous, and I could tell he was extremely knowledgeable. My guests kept cool during their visit, and we all were happy.” Gary was tired of his high summer electric bills. He also realized that his 15-year-old air conditioner wasn’t cooling as well as it once did. So Gary called Cool Air USA and asked about installing a new, high efficiency unit. “The technician told me exactly what size unit that would be best for my home and informed me about different options,” he says. “After I decided to go ahead, they installed my new air conditioner quickly and professionally. They also cleaned up after themselves so well I couldn’t even tell they’d been there. My new air conditioner does a great job of cooling, and because it’s super efficient, my FPL bills have dropped significantly.” Linda and Gary are typical of Cool Air USA customers. The A+rated company based in Dania Beach can provide for all of your air conditioning needs quickly and efficiently. With more than 18 years in business, Cool Air USA prides itself on offering the latest, most technologically advanced equipment, as well as top quality customer service. Both installations of new units and repairs of existing ones are done by highly trained, certified technicians. PROFESSIONAL INSTALLATION New air conditioning units are far more efficient than older models. They save energy so a homeowner can feel good about making a positive impact on the environment, and they can also significantly lower a homeowner’s electric bills. “Air conditioning accounts for a large portion of most homeowners’ electric bills during the sum-

Ducts that are not cleaned regularly can harbor dust, dirt, pollen, moisture, bacteria, and other pollutants that may increase the risk of asthma and allergy attacks, bronchitis, and eye irritation.

mer months,” says Edan Aviv, who operates Cool Air USA with partners Gil Nagar and Lior Poyastro. “A new, more efficient unit can also make a difference in comfort level because it cools more efficiently Rebates and tax incentives may even help defray the initial cost of the unit.”

WHAT’S LURKING IN THE DUCTS? Even an older air conditioner can be made more efficient and safe with regular maintenance. Cool Air USA technicians are experts at cleaning the ducts, a process that can greatly reduce indoor air pollution, as well as make the unit cool more efficiently. “Too many people neglect their air conditioners because the problems aren’t visible,” Nagar says. “You may not notice that your unit isn’t cooling as efficiently as it was before because the decline happens gradually. And you also may not be aware that dirty air conditioner ducts can actually harm the quality of the air in your home.” Ducts that are not cleaned regularly can harbor dust, dirt, pollen, moisture, bacteria, and other pollutants that may increase the risk of asthma and allergy attacks, bronchitis, and eye irritation. To take care of the problem, Cool Air USA carefully vacuums the ducts using a turbojet-powered machine that gets rid of any foreign substances lurking there. Then the supply vents are sealed to keep the ducts in pristine condition for as long as possible. “Once the duct system is professionally cleaned, it should stay that way for three to seven years,” Nagar says. DRYER VENT CLEANING Dryer vent cleaning is another service offered by Cool Air USA.

“Many homeowners don’t realize that the vents in their clothes dryers can create fire risk,” Poyastro says. While the filter captures some of the lint that is created when you dry your clothes, it doesn’t get all of it. “If the remaining lint builds up and comes into contact with the dryer’s heating element, it can start to burn,” Povastro continues. “This is especially dangerous because

many people allow their dryers to operate while they are away from home.” A professional vent cleaning will solve the problem. “It is a hazard that people often don’t think about,” Aviv says. “But it is easy to let us take care of things before there is a problem.” EXCELLENT CUSTOMER SERVICE Cool Air USA values

its customers and strives to provide them with the very best service. Technicians with North American Technician Excellence certification take meticulous care of your property and always clean up after themselves. “We know that service is what keeps people coming back to us,” Aviv says. “Much of our business comes from word-of-mouth, because satisfied customers recommend us to their friends. We’re proud of our reputation in the community, and we will always work hard to maintain it.”

Legendary Roger Daltrey of 'The Who' brings rock opera Tommy to Hard Rock Live

Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee Roger Daltrey, is pulling out all the stops with a full backing band that will bring the rock opera's wide-ranging sounds vibrantly to life in its entirety, from start to finish, at the Seminole Hard Rock Live. Joining him will be Frank Simes, Scott Deavors, Jon Button, Loren Gold and Simon Townshend, younger brother of Pete Townshend. Every show will be an unforgettable experience for lifelong fans and newcomers alike. Throughout this tour, the audience will be treated to the full majesty of Tommy, performed by the icon lead singer of "The Who," Roger Daltrey, which has never before been played live, to its fullest and will include a variety of The Who's Classics as: "I'm Free, See Me, Feel Me," "The Acid Queen," "We're Not Gonna Take It" and much more. Each one promises to transport attendees deeply into this classic album with intensity and power. Daltrey remains the genius who drives the performances as he did at the time of Woodstock. Tommy is blind, deaf and dumb, but there is nothing wrong with him. As a small child, he accidentally witnessed the murder of his father by his stepfather. His mother and stepfather told him to forget everything he had seen and heard and to never talk about it; but Tommy carried it to the extreme, turned inward and stopped seeing, hearing or speaking at all. He suffered much while growing up and finally found happiness in, of all things, playing pinball. When he became the world champion pinball player it brought his family fame and fortune. After being spontaneously healed, he taught others his unique perspective on life, eventually becoming a religious cult figure. Roger and his band will be on hand at Hard

"Spanish Harlem." Anthony had no desire to sing in Spanish until he heard Juan Gabriel singing "Hasta Que Te Conoci." He loved the tune so much that he recorded the Salsa version, which he performed at the Latin music convention, receiving a standing ovation and lots of recognition that helped change his life for good. In 1991, Marc recorded his first album. "When the Night is Over," but it was the Spanish recording "Otra Notra," in 1994, that was the album that made him the icon of Salsa in English. Although he became famous in the Latin music world, he was still unknown in the USA, until his album's first single "I Need to Know ," hit the top 10 on the Billboard's Hot 100. MOSAIC THEATRE'S ELEVENTH SEASON OPENS WITH MICHAEL WELLER'S FINEST PLAY "SIDE EFFECTS" Weller's play centers on a Midwestern couple who appear to have, what one would think, the most perfect marriage, but in reality, it's not like that at all. They have big problems. This new play goes even deeper than its plot. The characters are a married couple, the Metzes, Melinda a

school teacher and writer who suffers from a disorder and her husband Hugh, a business man with his sights set on his political ambitions, much to her dismay, causing her to launch an extra marital affair. Lindy, the other woman in Hugh's life, also suffers from a condition known as bipolar. She is beautiful, dresses meticulously, has two children and is considered a brilliant poet, however, she was and always will be an independently free soul. In their younger years, Lindy and her very conceited friend, Hugh, spent their time together as two wild and crazy kids. Although Melinda and Hugh really love each other, the differences in their personalities seem to mar their marriage keeping them

both wanting each other and yet driven further and further apart. Aside from so many problems, the play is an excellent study of two people drawn to each other, yet cannot manage to be with each other. The Mosaic Theatre located at 12200 West Broward Boulevard, Plantation, presents this intense beautiful, harrowing and unique play of what seems to be a picture-marriage, but filled with emotional twists and turns. Now on stage through October 9, 2011. Tickets are $37, $31 and $15. For showtimes and more information, call: (954) 577-8243. "See You at the Theater" Contact Eleanor at ESuntimes@aol.co m

‘WE WILL NEVER FORGET’

Hallandale Beach Fire Rescue to host 10 year remembrance of 9-11

Ten years ago this coming Sunday, Sept. 11th, the world changed forever. When cowardly terrorist killed over 3,000 innocent people on U.S. soil, it sent a message that everything from this day forward would change. Nothing would ever be the same. While time has passed, the wounds are as open as they were in the hours following the devastation that altered the course of the future. In places such as New York City, Washington, D.C. and in a remote area of Pennsylvania, terror had a face, and the results were unthinkable as those who lived through Pearl Harbor could only relive the nightmare of being attacked on our fertile grounds. As the years passed and events were held yearly to remember and say a prayer for those who lost their life on that tragic day, the healing became easier. Those who lost fathers, husbands, brothers, cousins and friends, somehow found the strength to move on and use those memories in a positive way. The aftermath of that day still lingers as security checkpoints and searches have become a way of life. The way we live every day has been greatly affected by what many are calling the most significant day in world history. "September 11th changed the way everyone would live now, and into the future," said Hallandale Fire Chief Dan Sulli-

van. "From firefighters to so many innocent men, women and children, lives were lost. That can never be forgotten." HALLANDALE BEACH REMEMBERS Every year, since that tragic Tuesday 10 years ago, the City of Hallandale Beach has always done its part to remember and honor those who lost lives in this terrorist act. This Sunday, on the 10th anniversary, the City of Hallandale Beach and the Hallandale Beach Fire Rescue will host its 10th Annual Patriot's Day Remembrance from 9 a.m. - 11 a.m. at the Main Station Station 7 (121 SW 3rd St., Hallandale Beach). "We have hosted this event every year to keep that flame burning and to remind us of all those families who were torn apart on that day," said Chief Sullivan. "It's been 10 very trying years for so many who are still trying to come to grips with the losses of life." The ceremony will be followed by refreshments, sponsored by Panera Bread of Hallandale Beach.

Solving problems that damage your home and business

WATER LEAKS: DAMAGE HAPPENS QUICKLY It doesn’t take much time for a water leak to do extensive damage to your home or business. In fact, it can happen just hours after the leak occurs. 1st Priority Restoration can find the leak and fix it quickly, using the latest. state-of-theart technology. Its noninvasive, infrared thermal imaging equipment can detect the precise location of the leak within a wall or up to 12 feet underground, greatly minimizing the area of wall or floor that needs to be removed. When the leak is fixed, technicians will fully restore the area to its original condition.

WORKING DIRECTLY WITH YOUR INSURANCE COMPANY To save the home and business owner time and money, 1st Priority will work directly with your insurance company. Its professional staff will identify and assess both visible and hidden damage, submit all bills, and take care of any negotiations. There is no out-of-pocket cost for the home or business owner. This helps you to avoid headaches now as well as in the future. The insurance company adjuster wants the best outcome for the insurance company, and may not actively seek out unseen damage that is behind walls or under floors. 1st Priority, however, advocates for the homeowner, and its technicians will use their skills and experience to identify even the hidden damage that may cause problems in the future if it is not fixed. HOW DO LEAKS HAPPEN? Some leaks happen when water gets in from the outside, such as after a heavy rain or flood. Others can occur within your plumbing system and will unnecessarily increase your water bill. Determining whether you have this kind of leak is easy. Simply read your water meter just before leaving the house for several hours or going to sleep for the night.

When you return, or wake in the morning, read the meter again. If no leak exists, the readings should be about the same. If the second reading is higher, you probably have a leak that is driving up your costs and may be causing unseen damage. If you suspect you have a leak, don’t wait. Call 1st Priority Restoration immediately to fix the problem.

IS MOLD MAKING YOUR HOME TOXIC? 1st Priority specializes in ridding your home or business of mold that may be making the air you breathe toxic. When mold exists, it can exacerbate symptoms of asthma and other respiratory ailments, as well as cause coughing, sneezing, and headaches. And some people are highly allergic to it. WHAT IS MOLD? Mold is a living organism that can grow very rapidly under certain conditions. It reproduces by emitting microscopic spores that float through the air and land on damp surfaces, where they begin to feed on the material on which they are resting. Thousands of different kinds of molds exist, and some are known allergens. A few produce harmful chemicals called mycotoxins that can seriously affect many parts of the body. But all molds, in the right conditions and in high enough concentrations, can adversely affect human health. Getting rid of mold is

vital to keeping the environment in your home or business a healthy one. A JOB FOR PROFESSIONALS Detecting and removing toxic mold is not a simple process, and it should be done by a professional. Using the best technology and tools available, 1st Priority Restoration can get rid of the mold in your home or business before it becomes a serious problem. Mold can grow anywhere that moisture exists. Air conditioning ducts are the most common place, but it can also form behind drywall, under carpets, and on furniture and fabrics. And mold may already be growing on a surface that is not yet releasing enough spores so it is visible. The first step in eliminating mold is to do a professional inspection. Just as they do to find water leaks, 1st Priority technicians will use non-invasive thermal imaging to find areas of moisture that are hospitable to spores. To make sure they identify the existence of mold at the earliest stage possible, they will do three types of testing: air quality, wall cavity, and tape samplings. The samples are sent to an outside lab, and results are usually returned within 48 hours. GOODBYE, MOLD Once technicians determine that mold exists, they remove it completely. It is not enough to kill it, be-

cause injurious chemicals and proteins can remain even in dead mold. Permeable material such as drywall must be treated or replaced. Because spores are released during the removal process, 1st Priority Restoration uses an air scrubber to keep the spores from settling. Then, a special Hepa filtering system effectively traps the spores to clean furniture and other surfaces. After the removal is finished, 1st Priority technicians restore the area to its original condition.

UV PREVENTION SYSTEM To avoid the return of mold and to retain the high quality of the air you breathe, 1st Priority Restoration can install an ultraviolet light system that connects to your air conditioning. It kills mold spores before they have a chance to create a problem. The UV system will work continuously, helping to keep your AC ducts clear of mold so you will not have to worry that you may be breathing in toxins. AIR DUCT CLEANING Mold is not the only contaminant that gets into air ducts. Airborne bacteria and viruses can also grow freely there, causing respiratory problems. Standard disposable fiberglass filters remove only a small portion of these contaminates. The rest can be spewed back out into the home, where they cause poor

air quality. Cleaning the ducts can get rid of unwanted substances, as well as reduce cooling costs by allowing the air conditioner to work more efficiently. Because a clean system is less likely to break down, it can also reduce repair bills. OZONE TREATMENT If your home or business has an unpleasant odor due to smoke damage or biohazards, 1st Priority Restoration can help. Technicians will use a highly effective ozone treatment to eliminate the odor and restore the air quality. 1ST PRIORITY RESTORATION: THE PLACE TO CALL 1st Priority Restoration does it all. Whatever the source of damage or contamination to your home or business might be, 1st Priority can identify it, repair it, and restore the area to its original condition, all while working

directly with your insurance company. The company provides start-to-finish, 24hour service 365 days a year for repairing water, fire and smoke or wind damage, leak detection and repair, and ozone treatment. Technicians follow through with debris clean-up, manipulation and packing, storage, cleaning and sanitizing, using the latest technology to restore your property and belongings to its preloss condition. To save you time, 1st Priority can work directly with your insurance company. 1st Priority Restoration provides the fast action and thorough service that are the most important factors in reducing or eliminating structural damage. Disaster does not knock at the door— it occurs unexpectedly. 1st Priority’s goal is to respond quickly and restore your home or business with the least amount of inconvenience to you.

(ARA) - If your arm goes numb and your speech is slurred, you know you need to seek immediate medical attention. When you nick yourself shaving, you know you can deal with it yourself. But for the vast number of maladies in between, it can be difficult to know when to go to the doctor and when to deal with it on your own. One of the most difficult situations in which you need to make the "home care vs. professional care" decision may be when something affects your joints. The joints do some important work for the human body, and figuring out when things will get better on their own and when you may have a more serious problem is not easy. WHEN TO SEEK HELP William Ungureit, clinical director of the physician assistant training program at South University in Tampa, Fla., says there are some important signs that will

tell you when to seek professional care. "If the joint is warm to the touch and swollen, seek immediate help," Ungureit says. "Those are signs of a possible infection, something that won't get better on its own." Likewise, if you know that the joint pain is the result of an injury such as a fall, put an ice pack on the injury and seek help right away. This type of injury will usually be accompanied by swelling and the inability to bear weight. Otherwise, painful joints often can be treated at home with over-the-counter pain relievers such as ibuprofen or naproxen sodium. And what about ice and heat? "Cold therapy (ice) can be used for chronic injuries, such as pain after running," says Ungureit. "Heat therapy is recommended for injuries that have no inflammation or swelling. Heat is ideal for sore, stiff, nagging muscle or joint pain." If you decide to treat

There is no cure for osteoarthritis, but it can be managed with pain killers, physical therapy, steroid injections such as cortisone, or other injections to help lubricate the joint.

the pain at home, you still need to see your primary care physician if the pain lasts more than two weeks. Your physician may offer prescription pain relievers or other treatment. CHRONIC JOINT PAIN Treatment for chronic joint pain may be more involved, Ungureit says. "Noninflammatory joint pain usually signifies osteoarthritis, which is caused by trauma

to the joint or degeneration of the joint tissue in weight-bearing joints." That means the knee, hip and spinal joints. According to the U.S. Bone and Joint Initiative, a movement sanctioned by the World Health Organization, one in five Americans has some form of arthritis. And contrary to the perception that arthritis is a disease of the elderly, more than half of those with arthritis are under the age of

65. There is no cure for osteoarthritis, but it can be managed with pain killers, physical therapy, steroid injections such as cortisone, or other injections to help lubricate the joint. As a last resort, surgery to realign or completely replace a joint may be an option. Complete joint replacement is now available for the knee, shoulder, hip and ankle. MOTION IS LO-

TION Although you can't prevent osteoarthritis, you can do things to help lessen its onset and its painful effects. "Losing weight and exercising regularly are great ways to combat osteoarthritis," says Ungureit. "When it comes to joints, we say that 'motion is lotion.' Dropping five or 10 pounds may not seem like much, but five pounds per step adds up fairly quickly on your joints." What about herbal supplements and other alternative treatments for joint pain? Ungureit says there's nothing wrong with trying them, but make sure you tell your doctor which ones you are thinking about taking, since some supplements can interfere with other medications. So while you may not need to consult your doctor for every ache, there are some serious signs to look for, and some effective steps that both you and your doctor can take to help relieve those painful joints.

How to find relief from fall allergies and hay fever

(ARA) - For many, fall signifies the change of leaves from green to vibrant reds, oranges and yellows. But for one in five people, it's time to

control a seasonal allergy: hay fever. Despite its ill-suited name that would lead you to believe you are allergic to hay, the allergic reaction is actu-

Anger Management

In response to some questions I have received regarding anger issues, and anger management, I have written the following article. To cover the entire field of anger management in one article is impossible, so I have picked two of the most important: Displacement of anger”, and “Assertiveness training”… John P has a very abusive and hostile boss. Today was particularly bad as John’s boss told him he was not worth his pay, and insinuated that if his love life was like his work his wife would never end up having a child… John is too frightened to confront his boss’s snide and inappropriate comments, and instead goes home dejected, and steaming mad. He enters his home, where his wife is busily cooking, and asks “what’s for dinner”?. She responds “chicken”, and John goes into another of his many rages… “Chicken again…, Chicken again?... Can’t you think of anything different?...Your cooking stinks, and your chicken is the worst of it. You’re lucky I put up with this!... You’re not worth two dead flies!!!”. The above is a classic example of anger displacement, and projection. Projection is basically identifying onto others the unwanted feelings we have of our selves… Displacement of anger involves directing anger onto something or someone that is not the true source of the anger…John is not really mad at his wife, but he is afraid to confront his boss. Now both he and his wife are angry & miserable, proving once again: “What comes around goes around”. Is there a solution here, other than John quitting his job or his wife leaving him?... Yes there is. Anger management therapy might help John and his wife tremendously, especially in the area known as “assertiveness training”. Assertiveness training helps one understand the triggers which cause our anger, and how to efficiently respond to that which upsets our sense of well-being. It is not a denial process, and should not be, as anger is often an understandable, and even justifiable human emotion, but it can be a great help to those who do not process anger well…. So for those of you who overreact, or are too timid to confront, consider a little help in this area. It might just change your entire life. ally rarely triggered by hay. The myth dates back to the 1800s when British doctors discovered that people exposed to cut hay or grass resulted in sneezing and itching, producing nervousness, which was referred to as a "fever." Thus, the term hay fever was coined. Hay fever, also called allergic rhinitis, causes cold-like signs and symptoms such as itchiness of the nose, roof of the mouth, throat, eyes and ears, along with watery eyes, runny nose, congestion, and sneezing. But unlike a cold, hay fever isn't caused by a virus; it is caused by an allergic response to outdoor or indoor allergens, such as mold, trees, pollen and pet dander. Hay fever, which affects an estimated 60 million people in the United States, young and old, can really take a toll on your daily routine, and is a nuisance both personally and professionally. Whether you're affected yearround or during a specific season, learning how to manage hay fever symptoms can be vital to restoring your comfort and quality of life. This condition can also be expensive to manage. From 2000 to 2005, the cost of treating allergic rhinitis nearly doubled from $6.1 billion to $11.2 billion, according to the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology. More than half of that was spent on prescription and overthe-counter medications. Some experts recommend patients purchase store-brand, over-the-counter medicines as an effective means of managing both the condition and its associated costs. "There are a number of very effective overthe-counter treatments to address the symptoms of seasonal allergies," says Dr. William Berger, professor of allergy and immunology at the University of California, Irvine. "In fact, to help patients save money, I would rec-

Hay fever, also called allergic rhinitis, causes cold-like signs and symptoms such as itchiness of the nose, roof of the mouth, throat, eyes and ears, along with watery eyes, runny nose, congestion, and sneezing. ommend many of the store-brand, non-sedating antihistamines sold at leading retailers and pharmacies, such as Cetirizine or Loratadine. These products are approved by the FDA, but cost significantly less than the brand names." According to Berger, many allergy sufferers may find better relief of their symptoms by trying one of these newer, more effective treatments now available in the aisle, like Fexofenadine, which just switched from prescription to overthe-counter in 2011. "Even if it isn't the hay folks are actually allergic to, it doesn't make 'hay fever' any less miserable for those dealing with it. Effective manage-

ment with medicines, ideally before the symptoms start, is key," he says. You can find more information about the symptoms and treatments for allergic

rhinitis at the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (www.aaaai.org), or the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (www.acaai.org).

Walking for health starts with small steps walks within six weeks. * Open a "fitness checking account." For those with busy schedules, challenged to find a slot of 30 minutes to exercise, break it up throughout the day. Spend 10 minutes at lunch walking the parking lot. Power shop for 10 minutes at the grocery store. Add another 10 minutes to the walk to get the mail. Just like money, whether it's one big deposit or three small deposits, all denominations add up. * Form a walking group. Whether it's with friends or family members, committing to a walking group provides a built-in source of accountability and can make exercise

(ARA) - From drivethrough dining to online shopping, people are always looking for ways to cut out an extra step to make things easier and faster. When it comes to developing healthier habits, however, adding extra steps - literally may help a person get on the path to a healthier lifestyle. In fact, research has shown that 90 percent of people who have kept weight off successfully include regular activity in their lives. The recently released

2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans advise reducing calorie consumption, focusing on nutrient-dense foods, and increasing physical activity to reduce the prevalence of overweight and obesity, and reduce the risk of weight-related chronic diseases. Even if you believe in the benefits of walking, like burning calories and toning, it can sometimes be challenging to know how to incorporate this most natural form of exercise into a busy lifestyle.

Weight Watchers International, Inc. is once again launching its popular Weight Watchers Walk-It Challenge this spring - and offers some tips to getting started and staying motivated: * Make an appointment. Stick to a regular time every day and put "exercise appointments" on your paper or electronic calendar. If you are a beginner, start out with just 10 minute walks. Add five to 10 minutes to your appointment each week with a goal of completing 45-minute

more fun. There are also established walking clubs in most communities. * Commit to a walk. Weight Watchers has declared May 22 "Weight Watchers WalkIt Day," and encourages walkers to join one of more than 50 official Weight Watchers Walk-It Challenge 5K walking events being hosted across the country by local member clubs of the Road Runners Club of America. Individuals may also explore other walks taking place in their area or map a route for their own 5K. People can visit www.weightwatchers.co m/walkit to learn how to participate, find a 5K

event and find a walking team in their area. Another component of this year's Walk-It Challenge is Weight Watchers donation of $100,000 to the Alliance for a Healthier Generation to support the organization's work to reverse the trend of childhood obesity in America and inspire young people to develop healthy habits for life. The Alliance's Healthy Schools Program supports more than 11,000 U.S. schools as they implement positive changes in physical activity, school meals, and health education to create healthier places for students to learn and staff to work.

Spay/Neuter Program For Pit Bulls Extended

FORT LAUDERDALE - Back in May 2011, the Humane Society of Broward County offered FREE spaying or neutering for pit bulls 8 weeks to 6 months of age. The program has been very successful, with 47 dogs being sterilized to date. As a result the Society is going to extend the program through December 2011. Sadly pit bulls are one of the most misunderstood breeds and thousands end up in shelters all across America every year. Appointments are necessary so please contact spayneuter@hsbroward.com or 954-463-7729. The surgeries will be performed at the Humane Society of Broward County located at 2070 Griffin Road. Vaccinations and microchipping will also be available for a fee. Here are the simple facts as to why you should have your pets spayed or neutered: 1. An un-neutered male dog can detect an un-spayed female dog in heat for up to 3 ½ miles. As a result more than 80% of dogs hit by cars are un-neutered males. Neutering pets makes them less likely to roam. 2. Altering your pet greatly reduces or eliminates the desire for them to spray or mark their territory. 3. A dog that is neutered is less likely to fight with other animals for a mate or territory. 4. You’ll greatly reduce the chance of testicular and ovarian cancer if your pets are altered at an early age. 5. Unsterilized animals often exhibit more behavior and temperament problems than do those who have been spayed or neutered. Spaying and neutering can make pets less likely to bite. 6. Spaying and neutering helps dogs and cats live longer, healthier lives. Don’t you want your pet to live as long as possible?

The 10 best school foods to give kids a boost

(ARA) - As children are now back at school, it is important to arm them not only with the newest backpacks and pencils, but also with a nutritious diet. While the lure of fast food and quick meals can be enticing, fueling kids with healthy foods and a well-rounded diet can be easier than parents think. "A new school year provides a great opportunity for parents to teach their kids how to make nutritious choices throughout the day," says Dr. Alan Greene, a pediatrician and author of "Feeding Baby Green." "Whether starting the day off with organic milk or packing school lunches with lots of fruits and veggies, making a conscious choice to focus on nutrition as kids return to the classroom can start with a few simple choices at the grocery store." To help parents get their children off to a nutritious start this school year, Horizon, the leading milk brand in the U.S., has partnered with Dr. Greene to develop the following list of the 10 best back to school foods: TOP 10 FOODS TO FEED YOUR KIDS 1. Organic milk With some studies indicating that only one in 10 girls and one in four boys meet their calcium needs,

it's important to keep calcium-rich foods front and center in kids' diets. Organic milk, which is produced without the use of antibiotics, toxic synthetic pesticides or artificial growth hormones, is a great choice for lunchboxes and breakfast time. Horizon makes convenient single serve milk boxes that pack perfectly into lunchboxes and provide a nutrient-rich alternative to juice drinks and other nutrient-poor beverages. In addition, Horizon organic milk with DHA omega3 is a good choice for breakfast beverages or paired with lowsugar, whole grain cereals. DHA omega-3 has been shown to support brain, heart and eye health.

2. Whole grain bread The new U.S. Dietary Guidelines recommend that at least half of our grains be whole grains, so choosing whole grains for lunchbox sandwiches and wraps is a smart strategy to boost fiber and other important nutrients. One good choice is Rudi's Organic Bakery's 14 Grain bread. With just three slices you get the daily recommended allowance of whole grains. 3. String cheese Cheese is a good source of calcium and

protein. If your child isn't a meat-eater, cheese is another high-protein option for lunches and snack time. String cheese is a great way to help your kids play with their food by pulling apart the cheese and they will love munching on it too. Horizon has a variety of cheeses that are great for snacking. Mozzarella String Cheese and Colby Cheese Sticks are both kid-approved favorites.

4. Trail mix fixings A variety of dried fruits (cherries, cranberries, raisins, dates), nuts (almonds, peanuts, walnuts, pistachios) and cereal (look for those high in fiber and low in sugar) can combine into one hearty snack for onthe-go kids. Plus, you can make an activity out of letting your kids create their very own one-of-a-kind mix. 5. Nut butter Peanut butter, almond butter, hazelnut butter - they're all

great for lunchtime sandwiches or on toast for an afterschool snack.

turkey as part of afterschool snacks - think turkey and cheese roll-ups.

6. Hummus This protein-packed spread comes in a wide variety of flavors and even in singleserve packs for kids on the go. You can try it as a dip for veggies and whole-grain crackers or as a spread on wraps and sandwiches as a nutritious alternative to mayonnaise or dressing.

9. Fruit, fruit, fruit Apples, cherries, bananas, oranges, grapes - fruits are an important part of a well-balanced diet. Try and vary what you offer. Different fruits provide different nutrients. When looking for organic fruit options, check out Earthbound Farm, which offers a number of organic fruit products nationwide, ranging from apple slices to strawberries to grapes, citrus and blueberries.

7. Granola bars Granola bars can be a lower-sugar, higherfiber alternative to cookies and candy bars. They are also great as after-school or after-sports snacks. Look for granola bars made with whole grains and with 10 grams of sugar or less. One bar that fits these criteria is Annie's Organic Berry Berry Granola Bars. Each bar is packed with 8 grams of whole grain per serving, is certified organic and contains no artificial ingredients, preservatives or high-fructose corn syrup. They're a perfect snack to replace high sugar treats. 8. Turkey breast Turkey breast is low in fat and high in protein, and it can be a crowd pleaser in the lunchroom. You can also get creative with

10. Veggies, veggies, veggies Veggies like carrot sticks, celery, cucumbers, pea pods and cherry tomatoes are all great for lunchboxes and afterschool snacks. Remember, the darker the veggie, the more nutritious it tends to be. To spice veggies up, you can think about serving them with a low fat salad dressing or hummus as a dip. In addition to organic fruit, Earthbound Farm also offers a full range of organic veggie products.
