The feeling I get in my stomach when I think back 10 years to Sept. 11, 2001 is something that will never leave my body or mind.

Ten year anniversary of 9-11 will be a somber remembrance
HALLANDALE BEACH - This Sunday marks the 10th anniversary of 9-11. Many communities will be paying tribute to the many first responders, public workers and citizens that lost their lives on that tragic day. This day has not been memorialized as a national holiday, but every year since 2002 proclamations have been issued by both President Bush and President Obama designating the day in various acts and resolutions. It has been recognized as Patriots Day and in 2009 September 11 was designated as National Day of Service and Remembrance under the Serve America Act. In September of 2009 and 2010 the tradition was continued. This year on July 22 the Senate unanimously passed a bipartisan resolution sponsored by New Jersey Senator Frank Lautenberg establishing a National Moment of Remembrance at 1 PM to memorialize and collectively pay tribute to the victims of the terrorist attacks. Senator Lautenberg has requested that mayors across the country join in solidarity and encourage all first responders
and houses of worship to ring their bells and sound their sirens at 1 PM for one full minute on September 11. This will be an opportunity to take a minute of reflection and remember the victims and the many men and women that made the ultimate sacrifice while trying to save their fellow citizens. Our city will also be conducting our 9-11 Memorial Service at our Main Fire Station on Southwest 3rd Street and 1st Avenue from 9am to 11am. Our department has created a wonderful monument dedicated to all our first responders. It is incumbent on all of us to ensure that 9-11 will never end. This date should never be just another day. Please try to take a moment to “Stop and Remember” at 1 PM by ceasing all work and other activities.
Mark the moment in an appropriate manner by ringing bells, blowing whistles and sounding sirens. In addition to our memorial service on Friday September 9th from 9 to 4 there will be a Blood Drive at our Community Cultural Center. Since 911 our country has been engaged in the global war on terrorism. The attacks on 9-11 were the result of Al Qaeda and their extremist mission against all Christians, Jews and Americans. Regretfully this extremist group of terrorists has created great animosity towards all Muslims. The Muslim Community has created a campaign to promote religious tolerance throughout the nation. They have partnered with community blood banks around the nation to organize blood drives as a way to join with fellow residents in a day of service. September 7 marked the official end of summer break. Many other items besides the budget were addressed during the commission meetings in July that I have not had the chance to cover. One of those issues was the hiring of an Acting City Attorney and the implementation of a
process to fill the vacant City Attorney position. The City Commission directed the City Attorney to contact three firms that may be interested in filling in as Acting City Attorney for a capped amount not to exceed $24,750 per month for two months. This figure was suggested by Commissioner Lewy based on a monthly cost for the inside attorney. This was agreed to by a majority, with one dissenting opinion. He contacted three firms; Weiss, Serota, Helfman, Pastoriza Cole and Boniske; Nabors, Giblin and Nickerson and Goren, Cherof, Doody and Ezrol. Sam Goren Esq. did not want to offer their service. Weiss Serota offered a flat rate of $30,000 not including litigation and Nabors offered $18,000 with litigation other then labor law. Weiss Serota has worked successfully on ligation with our city and currently represents the city on labor matters and they have a large local municipal base of clients with offices in Broward and Dade Counties. Nabors has an office in Fort Lauderdale, Tampa and Tallahassee with a focus on governmental law and a larger
presence in the northern regions of the state. Due to the price difference, the commission voted to retain Nabors for two months since the attorney assigned to us was a former Broward County attorney. After the selection, I briefed the commission on the in house process we utilized to hire the former City Manager. At that time the City Commission advertised the position and had Staff review applications for meeting the minimum requirements. The Commission then ranked and selected the short list of 15 and then narrowed it down for the next round of the process. The Commission did not want to proceed with interviews as the majority wanted to stay in house. The Commission debated whether we wanted to remain with an in house attorney or move to an outside contract. It was decided we wanted to keep both options open. The Commission directed Staff to post and advertize to fill the position permanently, including the ability for individuals and firms to apply with a response deadline of August 31st. The City Commission also agreed that rather than have
Staff work on the process we would appoint a committee of five individuals to select five finalists and then the City Commission would have the option to add 5 more. The committee was appointed at yesterdays September 7th commission meeting and the city received approximately 30 candidates.

Dear Neighbors, As of this writing, on September 13, 2011, the City of Hollywood is scheduled to hold a ballot referendum on whether to dramatically cut pension benefits to its employees. This article is not going to tell you how you should vote, and nothing contained in this article should be construed that way. Hopefully, this article will provide you some useful information on the proposed changes. Months ago, the City of Hollywood created a preliminary Operating Budget based on the assumption that about 8.5 million dollars in savings would be realized through pension reductions. Because this balanced budget already includes these anticipated savings that leaves two likely outcomes from the election. If the ballot questions pass, millions of pension savings will accrue, as the City had planned, and benefits to employees will be lessened. If the ballot questions fail, the City will have to make up

the planned pension saving through other cuts. Since our proposed balanced budget assumes 8.5 million dollars in pension savings, if those savings are not, in fact, realized, then the City of Hollywood will be faced with additional employee layoffs, additional employee wage and benefit reductions, reductions in City services and/or privatization of City services. There is no referendum outcome that is a pleasant. But, it is reality. Anyone seeking to understand Hollywood’s current financial situation needs to understand several basic facts. First, over 75% of our entire
General Fund budget goes to pay people and pay benefits to people. We are a service business after all, and because personnel related costs are our biggest expense, if we want to make meaningful operational cost reductions, there are few alternatives but to reduce personnel related expenses. As we prepare to adopt the City’s 2012 budget, we are facing a 38 million dollar gap between revenues and expenditures. That number is jawdropping. But, the reality is that the economy is faltering, foreclosures are still soaring, pension costs are high, day-to-day expenses continue to rise, consumer spending is down and the revenues coming into City Hall have dropped. It is as plain as that. And, when the Federal Reserve commits to virtually non-existent interest rates for the next two years, what does that tell you about the economic forecast for the short term? With these facts in mind, anyone who believes

What so many had feared would one day happen, did indeed take place as the world watched terrorism unfold right before their very eyes. In what was one of the most cowardly acts any of us had ever witnessed. Terrorist groups with so much hatred toward this country that they blindly took thousands of lives - many who were born in Saudi Arabia, Iraq and other breeding grounds for such hostility. Showing that there was no regard for life, airplanes were flown into buildings in a rage so intense that 10 years later there is so much anger and resentment in this country for basically anyone who is an outsider, and while it has come back to hurt those who mean no harm to this country, it put in all of our minds that we simply cannot trust anyone. It is because of that day many of our men and women who defend our freedom - at home and abroad - have lost lives in war efforts around the world to ward off such vicious attacks on our, or any other soil around the world. What happened on Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2001 was something that we had felt that would never happen. Not in this country. To that magnitude. But it did, changing the course of the future in such a dramatic way that we live and feel it in our everyday lives. This Sunday is a time when all of us - as human beings - and not just Americans - have to reflect on how all of our lives have been changed. This is not just about the United States of America. This is a global issue, and just because it didn't happen in England, Tokyo, Madrid, Sydney or Belfast, it is indeed your worry as well. Terrorists are bullies who push, and push and push some more until you stand up against them. Over the past 10 years, this world has more than stood up to this fight, getting those who are responsible. There are so many events taking place this Sunday around our communities to remember and pray for those who lost special people in their lives to a day that is simply called 9-11!
you can continue to operate just as before—without substantive, systemic and objective expense reductions—is living on another planet. This is not just a Hollywood problem. Pick up the newspaper and you will see this happening in other cities and states throughout the rest of the country. Public employees, who bust their butts to provide quality services to residents every day, cannot and should not be vilified for the budget shortfalls facing cities as a result of the country’s economic meltdown. We, as elected officials, must take accountability for what we do and how we spend taxpayer dollars. We have to ask the question: Based on Hollywood’s actual, current financial position, what benefits can we actually afford to pay if we are to remain a financially solvent City? When people say “live within your means,” this is what we are talking about. Based on 2010 statistics, the average Police or Fire pension for an individual is higher than 75 percent of all household incomes in Hollywood. We have employees retiring right now, at age 45, who will receive $100,000 per year for the rest of their lives. That is unsustainable. And, while some have suggested we should just increase the tax rate to cover the whole cost of our employee pension program, that would require a tax increase on residents of 27 percent. That, I cannot support. The election slated for September 13,
2011 is significant, and your vote is important. I am not going to tell you how to vote since I think you can handle that part. The results of the election will have serious consequences, and predictably, the turnout will be thin. The few people who show up to vote will decide an issue of critical significance for all Hollywood’s 143,000 residents. As you decide what you will be doing on September 13, 2011, I will leave you with a thought. There are American
men and women all over the world who are fighting and dying to make sure you have the right to cast that vote. And so, because voter turnouts of 8% are particularly embarrassing to all residents, please vote and encourage other residents to do the same. Muslims for Life Blood Drives Honor 9/11 Victims
On the ten year anniversary of 9/11, in remembrance of the lives lost on that day, the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community USA has launched a nationwide "Muslims for Life" campaign across its 71 chapters in about 50 cities across the nation to collect 10,000 bags of blood and save 30,000 lives. The Miami chapter will host a local blood drive as part of this nationwide effort.

school teacher and writer who suffers from a disorder and her husband Hugh, a business man with his sights set on his political ambitions, much to her dismay, causing her to launch an extra marital affair. Lindy, the other woman in Hugh's life, also suffers from a condition known as bipolar. She is beautiful, dresses meticulously, has two children and is considered a brilliant poet, however, she was and always will be an independently free soul. In their younger years, Lindy and her very conceited friend, Hugh, spent their time together as two wild and crazy kids. Although Melinda and Hugh really love each other, the differences in their personalities seem to mar their marriage keeping them
both wanting each other and yet driven further and further apart. Aside from so many problems, the play is an excellent study of two people drawn to each other, yet cannot manage to be with each other. Hallandale Beach Fire Rescue to host 10 year remembrance of 9-11
Ten years ago this coming Sunday, Sept. 11th, the world changed forever. When cowardly terrorist killed over 3,000 innocent people on U.S. soil, it sent a message that everything from this day forward would change. Nothing would ever be the same. While time has passed, the wounds are as open as they were in the hours following the devastation that altered the course of the future. In places such as New York City, Washington, D.C. and in a remote area of Pennsylvania, terror had a face, and the results were unthinkable as those who lived through Pearl Harbor could only relive the nightmare of being attacked on our fertile grounds. As the years passed and events were held yearly to remember and say a prayer for those who lost their life on that tragic day, the healing became easier. Those who lost fathers, husbands, brothers, cousins and friends, somehow found the strength to move on and use those memories in a positive way. The aftermath of that day still lingers as security checkpoints and searches have become a way of life. The way we live every day has been greatly affected by what many are calling the most significant day in world history. "September 11th changed the way everyone would live now, and into the future," said Hallandale Fire Chief Dan Sulli-
van. "From firefighters to so many innocent men, women and children, lives were lost. That can never be forgotten." HALLANDALE BEACH REMEMBERS Every year, since that tragic Tuesday 10 years ago, the City of Hallandale Beach has always done its part to remember and honor those who lost lives in this terrorist act. This Sunday, on the 10th anniversary, the City of Hallandale Beach and the Hallandale Beach Fire Rescue will host its 10th Annual Patriot's Day Remembrance from 9 a.m. - 11 a.m. at the Main Station Station 7 (121 SW 3rd St., Hallandale Beach). "We have hosted this event every year to keep that flame burning and to remind us of all those families who were torn apart on that day," said Chief Sullivan. "It's been 10 very trying years for so many who are still trying to come to grips with the losses of life." The ceremony will be followed by refreshments, sponsored by Panera Bread of Hallandale Beach.

(ARA) - If your arm goes numb and your speech is slurred, you know you need to seek immediate medical attention. When you nick yourself shaving, you know you can deal with it yourself. But for the vast number of maladies in between, it can be difficult to know when to go to the doctor and when to deal with it on your own. One of the most difficult situations in which you need to make the "home care vs. professional care" decision may be when something affects your joints. The joints do some important work for the human body, and figuring out when things will get better on their own and when you may have a more serious problem is not easy. WHEN TO SEEK HELP William Ungureit, clinical director of the physician assistant training program at South University in Tampa, Fla., says there are some important signs that will
tell you when to seek professional care. "If the joint is warm to the touch and swollen, seek immediate help," Ungureit says. "Those are signs of a possible infection, something that won't get better on its own." Likewise, if you know that the joint pain is the result of an injury such as a fall, put an ice pack on the injury and seek help right away. This type of injury will usually be accompanied by swelling and the inability to bear weight. Otherwise, painful joints often can be treated at home with over-the-counter pain relievers such as ibuprofen or naproxen sodium. And what about ice and heat? "Cold therapy (ice) can be used for chronic injuries, such as pain after running," says Ungureit. "Heat therapy is recommended for injuries that have no inflammation or swelling. Heat is ideal for sore, stiff, nagging muscle or joint pain." If you decide to treat

the pain at home, you still need to see your primary care physician if the pain lasts more than two weeks. Your physician may offer prescription pain relievers or other treatment. CHRONIC JOINT PAIN Treatment for chronic joint pain may be more involved, Ungureit says. "Noninflammatory joint pain usually signifies osteoarthritis, which is caused by trauma
to the joint or degeneration of the joint tissue in weight-bearing joints." That means the knee, hip and spinal joints. According to the U.S. Bone and Joint Initiative, a movement sanctioned by the World Health Organization, one in five Americans has some form of arthritis. And contrary to the perception that arthritis is a disease of the elderly, more than half of those with arthritis are under the age of
65. There is no cure for osteoarthritis, but it can be managed with pain killers, physical therapy, steroid injections such as cortisone, or other injections to help lubricate the joint. As a last resort, surgery to realign or completely replace a joint may be an option. Complete joint replacement is now available for the knee, shoulder, hip and ankle. MOTION IS LO-
TION Although you can't prevent osteoarthritis, you can do things to help lessen its onset and its painful effects. "Losing weight and exercising regularly are great ways to combat osteoarthritis," says Ungureit. "When it comes to joints, we say that 'motion is lotion.' Dropping five or 10 pounds may not seem like much, but five pounds per step adds up fairly quickly on your joints." What about herbal supplements and other alternative treatments for joint pain? Ungureit says there's nothing wrong with trying them, but make sure you tell your doctor which ones you are thinking about taking, since some supplements can interfere with other medications. So while you may not need to consult your doctor for every ache, there are some serious signs to look for, and some effective steps that both you and your doctor can take to help relieve those painful joints.

In response to some questions I have received regarding anger issues, and anger management, I have written the following article. To cover the entire field of anger management in one article is impossible, so I have picked two of the most important: Displacement of anger”, and “Assertiveness training”… John P has a very abusive and hostile boss. Today was particularly bad as John’s boss told him he was not worth his pay, and insinuated that if his love life was like his work his wife would never end up having a child… John is too frightened to confront his boss’s snide and inappropriate comments, and instead goes home dejected, and steaming mad. He enters his home, where his wife is busily cooking, and asks “what’s for dinner”?. She responds “chicken”, and John goes into another of his many rages… “Chicken again…, Chicken again?... Can’t you think of anything different?...Your cooking stinks, and your chicken is the worst of it. You’re lucky I put up with this!... You’re not worth two dead flies!!!”. The above is a classic example of anger displacement, and projection. Projection is basically identifying onto others the unwanted feelings we have of our selves… Displacement of anger involves directing anger onto something or someone that is not the true source of the anger…John is not really mad at his wife, but he is afraid to confront his boss. Now both he and his wife are angry & miserable, proving once again: “What comes around goes around”. Is there a solution here, other than John quitting his job or his wife leaving him?... Yes there is. Anger management therapy might help John and his wife tremendously, especially in the area known as “assertiveness training”. Assertiveness training helps one understand the triggers which cause our anger, and how to efficiently respond to that which upsets our sense of well-being. It is not a denial process, and should not be, as anger is often an understandable, and even justifiable human emotion, but it can be a great help to those who do not process anger well…. So for those of you who overreact, or are too timid to confront, consider a little help in this area. It might just change your entire life. Thus, the term hay fever was coined. Hay fever, also called allergic rhinitis, causes cold-like signs and symptoms such as itchiness of the nose, roof of the mouth, throat, eyes and ears, along with watery eyes, runny nose, congestion, and sneezing. But unlike a cold, hay fever isn't caused by a virus; it is caused by an allergic response to outdoor or indoor allergens, such as mold, trees, pollen and pet dander. Hay fever, which affects an estimated 60 million people in the United States, young and old, can really take a toll on your daily routine, and is a nuisance both personally and professionally. Whether you're affected yearround or during a specific season, learning how to manage hay fever symptoms can be vital to restoring your comfort and quality of life. This condition can also be expensive to manage. From 2000 to 2005, the cost of treating allergic rhinitis nearly doubled from $6.1 billion to $11.2 billion, according to the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology. More than half of that was spent on prescription and overthe-counter medications. Some experts recommend patients purchase store-brand, over-the-counter medicines as an effective means of managing both the condition and its associated costs. "There are a number of very effective overthe-counter treatments to address the symptoms of seasonal allergies," says Dr. William Berger, professor of allergy and immunology at the University of California, Irvine. "In fact, to help patients save money, I would rec-

FORT LAUDERDALE - Back in May 2011, the Humane Society of Broward County offered FREE spaying or neutering for pit bulls 8 weeks to 6 months of age.
