There have been three significant dates that Americans recall with sharp clarity.

I was not born when the first incident occurred the morning of December 7, 1941 when the Imperial Japanese Navy bombed Pearl Harbor sinking four United States battleships. The United States officially declared war against Japan the following day. The second event that shocked the na-

tion took place at 12:30 P.M. CST in Dallas, Texas on November 22, 1963 when President John F. Kennedy was assassinated. Again, I was a young boy of three years so I have no recollection. September 11th, 2001 began as any other work day as I travelled to my office in Hallandale Beach

Hallandale Beach continues to offer the same level of services while cutting costs to keep taxes low

‘AROUND THE CITY OF CHOICE’ HALLANDALE BEACH - The City of Hallandale Beach continues to strategically plan for our future. This month we will be finalizing the 2011-2012 budget and adopting the final millage rate. We continue to offer the same level of services while cutting costs to keep taxes low. The budget process is always ongoing. Once adopted for October 1st we will continue to focus on the future. The formal budget process actually started back in January with our community quadrant meetings. These took place over a two month period in every area and this year we added a Saturday. In January the commission conducted a daylong visioning retreat to redefine our mission and goals as the governing body. At that meeting we directed City Manager Antonio to conduct a citizens and business survey to be completed before the final budget was adopted. Approximately 6 years ago the city performed a direct mail survey to get feedback from our community. At that time we worked through one of the colleges that also facilitated a

vision session. This new survey was conducted differently with both a direct mail component and a phone component. The city contracted with ETC Institute out

of Kansas City to administer their trademark survey called “DirectionFinder”. Not only does the survey measure our community, it compares us to cities in the state and the nation. The baseline data of citizen satisfaction levels will be utilized to ensure our strategic planning is focused on our resident’s needs and most importantly, it will highlight areas where we need to improve services. The seven-page survey was mailed to 2500 residents within the city limits and took an average of 15 to

20 minutes to complete. It was administered by mail and phone with a random sampling of 800 residents during July and August. While not every single resident responded, the precision is plus or minus 3.4% at the 95% level. This level of confidence means that if you gave the survey to 100 residents the results would be within the same range. In every survey there are questions

that individuals will not respond to. In this particular case this response means that a resident did not use the service or does not have an opinion. This is an important tool to gauge budgeting in the future for levels of services. The report’s major findings showed that residents were generally satisfied with the overall quality of services provided by the city of Hallandale Beach. The top three services ranked as satisfied or

very satisfied were fire service at 90%, emergency services at 86% and police services at 75%. The areas that residents were least satisfied with were not surprising; storm water drainage at 43% and traffic flow at 41%. It should be noted that the national average is only 54% satisfaction for traffic. Residents and readers that follow my articles and commission –––––––––––––––––––– COOPER, Page 4A

From Page 1A ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– vanized American patriotism and drastically changed the way we live and travel. On the recent tenth anniversary of this horrific coward less act of abomination, our great country has paid tribute to our heroes who have senselessly perished under this unwarranted attack. Hallandale Beach Fire Chief Dan Sullivan has credited Jim Bunce with coordinating the ceremony at the main fire station honoring the intrepid fallen comrades that included an American Flag donated by Fireman/Paramedic Peter Berger that he purchased bearing the names of the 343 Fire personnel who lost their lives attempting to save individuals trapped inside the Twin Towers. Bunce is the district vice President representing our firefighters with local union 3080 and Berger is the President and owner of the World Firefighters Racquetball Association. The flag was raised to half-mast. Hallandale Beach Commissioner Dottie Ross delivered some thoughtful words reminding the audience that the firefighters and police officers were merely doing their job and these valiant soldiers will sacrifice their own lives in the line of duty to save others without hesitation. Commissioner Alex Lewy shared his perspective on the tragedy and spoke of the unity and bonding that has resulted from this dark day a decade ago. Chief Sullivan invited an active United States Marine to share his thoughts as his poignant recollection of travelling to Afghanistan with his comrades sent chills down our spines. The city of Hallandale Beach coordinated a beautiful memorial service punctuated with the elegant prayer and sensitive words from Public Works Deputy Director Earl King that brought moist eyes from the many listeners. HELP YOUR LOCAL SCHOOL: SAVE BOX TOPS You’ve probably seen the logo on all sorts of items— cereal, soup, granola bars, you name it. But did you know by collecting those little symbols you could be raising money to help your local school? The Hollywood Education Advisory Committee, in partnership with Box Tops for Education, is hosting a Box Top Collection Drive to raise money for Hollywood schools. The goal of the drive is to inform residents about how they can support local schools by clipping Box Tops. Residents and parents are also en-

couraged to coordinate local drives. To participate in the drive, simply clip the Box Tops, save them in a collection bag, and deposit them in designated locations throughout Hollywood. Each month, the Box Tops will be delivered to Hollywood schools for submission to the Box Tops for Education program. WHAT ARE BOX TOPS? Box Tops are postage stamp size squares that can be found on countless household products. They are worth 10 cents each to our schools. What is Box Tops for Education? BETH DAVID MEMORIAL GARDENS & LEVITT-WEINSTEIN MEMORIAL CHAPELS & CEMETERIES

Levitt-Weinstein Memorial Chapels & Cemeteries along with Blasberg Rubin-Zilbert have been involved in the South Florida community for over half a century. What distinguishes Levitt-Weinstein & Blasberg Rubin-Zilbert is that these South Florida institutions are still operated by the third generation of the original founding families.

Beth David Memorial Gardens is growing to meet the needs of our community. Not only are they expanding their Private Family Estates, which allows the opportunity for the families to personalize and “build to suite “their individual desires. In addition, a new monument section is also being developed to assure those families who want a more Jewish traditional burial. Along with all this growth, Beth David has also begun construction on a new mausoleum building. “Our goal at Beth David is to grow and expand to meet the needs of the community and families that we serve. As long as the needs of our families continue, we will keep growing and developing.” Says Marc Rubin, Area Sales Director. Chapels & Cemetery along with Blasberg Rubin-Zilbert, though, dedicated to the Jewish community, are available to people from all walks of life. Although our cemetaries are strictly for Jewish burials, our funeral homes are available to service all faiths. Marc Rubin, Area Sales Director, said, "Whether your loved one is staying locally or transferring out of state, the funeral home is here for the needs of all people that we serve. The advantage of being privately owned and managed is

that decisions can be made quickly." "People make choices in life and plan ahead for many things," Rubin says. "When a death occurs, why place the burden on your family to make those eternal decisions for you? What if unforeseen situations arise, wouldn't you feel better knowing you made your plans beforehand?" Shari Bradley, Marketing Director, said, "One of the benefits of dealing with us NOW is that you're planning in advance, saving money and relieving your family of stress by having to make the last minute decisions when you’re not necessarily thinking rationally." "Approximately 90% of the families we service have been prearranged," Rubin said. When you think about it logically, it makes sense because it is just another part of Estate Planning, like your Will; and you can handle your funeral and cemetery wishes at the same time with us." Rubin goes on to

say,"What are you going to do when a death occurs? It's important that each person has a pre-arranged plan. A person can set up a financial plan paid out over a period of time with no interest charges. One day you will need it, so why wait for that day to suddenly come? Long-term planning locks in at today's price and protects against inflation." Blasberg states, "There are no two funeral plans the same. Increasingly, the Chapel handles special requests such as "Personalized Funerals" that celebrate the life of the person. In a matter of speaking, death is a fact of life and in those challenging moments you want a family there to comfort you, to love, grieve, and remember your spirit. "LET OUR FAMILY TREAT YOUR FAMILY LIKE OUR OWN." Levitt Weinstein, Blasberg Rubin-Zilbert Funeral Homes and Beth David Memorial Gardens and Chapels.

PATIENT TESTIMONIALS "After searching for a caring, compassionate, conscientious, and competent dentist I finally found Elite Dental Center. Not only has Dr. Ivan Pelton continually provided state of the art treatment but he responds promptly to emergency situations with phone calls as well as with follow-up appointments. Dr. Pelton is unique among dentists. He really cares about his patients, taking time to fully explain all the treatment procedures that are to be performed in an easily understandable way. If all dentists were like Dr. Pelton there would be no dental phobia in America an appreciably less visits to the dentist," says Hugh B. "Dr. Pelton is just great. A friend recommended him to me, and it took only one appointment for me to switch to him from my old dentist. He did an outstanding job filling a cavity my old dentist had done a terrible job on. And he did what's certainly the best cleaning job I've had in years. In all, he's extremely thorough, meticulous, careful, and knowledgeable. On top of that, he's a super nice guy -- funny and easy going (yet very professional). The staff is just as nice and helpful. I highly recommend him,” says Raul S. "Dr. Pelton is efficient and runs on time. I really appreciate that of him. I also don't have to wait a long time to get an appointment either. His staff is courteous and Dr.Pelton cares about patients and dentistry," says Patricia D.

TIPS AND TRICKS: Use baking soda toothpaste. Sounds simple and it is. Baking soda in a concentration of 55% or greater will kill oral bacteria. Brushing with it or buying toothpaste with baking soda will decrease gum bleeding and tartar deposits. Fluoride, on the other hand, is beneficial to the teeth by strengthening them and making them resistant to decay. We recommend GelKam (no prescrition needed) for an excellent product that has much more fluoride than regular toothpaste. Stronger products are available by prescription. Got canker sores, use Cankermelts. You can purchase Cankermelts from Amazon.com. Cankermelts are made from licorice root and does not require a prescription to purchase. Got cold sores, use Vyroxin. It is effective for herpes virus lesions on the lips and can be purchased on Amazon.com. No prescription necessary. Toothpicks used daily between teeth have been shown to be as effective as floss. Research shows no statistical difference between people who toothpick between their teeth and those who flossed. If you prefer not to play with string,

gently pump the tip of the toothpick between the teeth and push it until you hit resistance. Then repeat 8-10 times per space. Work from the cheek-side aspect and don't try the insides until you have mastered the cheek side entries. An electric toothbrush is superior to a manual toothbrush. Yes it is! You get far better cleaning than using a manual toothbrush. The best brands are Oral-B Triumph (cheaper replacement heads) and Sonicaire. Replace heads every 2-3months. Make sure you brush your tongue when you brush. Many of the

bacteria that inhabit our teeth are on the tongue as well so brush them away and improve your breath in the process. Bleeding gums- get to the dentist. You most likely have gum disease which for most is a painless disease. So basically, your jaw bone may be getting eaten away by bacteria and you won't feel pain in 90% of the cases. It has been found that dental bacteria is gaining entry into our arteries and contributing to atherosclerosis or hardening of the arteries. Get your teeth cleaned regularly and often if needed.

How one woman helped change the treatment landscape for a rare swelling disease

(ARA) - For more than 30 years, Janet Long's life was a medical mystery. At the age of 7, she began experiencing unexplained, repeated and painful episodes of swelling all over her body. For years, Long went from doctor to doctor to try and find a cause and a remedy for her swelling attacks, yet every doctor she saw was baffled by her symptoms, and a diagnosis was never made. As Long got older, her swelling attacks became more severe and debilitating, making it hard for her to do everyday tasks, like driving a car, typing on a keyboard, or holding down a job and maintaining an active social life. "At my sickest, my swelling attacks would come one after the other, most frequently in my stomach and abdomen. I was pretty much incapacitated. During an abdominal attack, I would often look like I was four to six months pregnant," Long says. "It was very painful, and I spent a lot of time just lying on the bathroom floor due to the pain, nausea and vomiting." Over the years, Long's swelling was mistakenly linked to an assortment of conditions, ranging from allergies to sinus drainage. One physi-

accurate diagnosis and effective therapy no matter how rare their disease - and has some tips for other people to advocate for their own health.

cian even told her that there was nothing wrong with her, that it was all in her head. Despite the frustration of never knowing what was causing her swelling attacks, Long did not give up. She took control of her health by not taking "no" for an answer. Finally, at 40, Long was diagnosed. The cause - a rare, potentially fatal genetic disorder called Hereditary Angioedema (HAE). HAE affects about 6,000 people in the United States. HAE is caused by a deficiency in a protein in the blood that controls swelling and is characterized by repeated swelling attacks that can occur anywhere in the body, including the arms, legs, hands, feet, stomach, genitals, face and most dangerously, the tongue or throat

where swelling can cause death by suffocation. Despite finally getting an accurate diagnosis of HAE, Long's relief was short lived; she soon realized there were no viable treatment options available for her HAE. Recognizing the need for more awareness and better management options for people living with HAE, Long became empowered to ensure that she and the voices of all HAE patients were heard. She became executive vice president of the U.S. Hereditary Angioedema Association (HAEA), the premier advocacy organization for people living with HAE. Throughout the last 10 years, the organization has led the charge in advocating for more research and better treatment op-

tions for people with HAE. The HAEA's efforts have been instrumental in the FDA approval of and access to new targeted therapies available for people with HAE. While Long's lengthy road to an accurate diagnosis and fight for treatment options may seem unique, it can be a common story for the 30 million people in the United States living with one of 7,000 rare diseases. Without widespread knowledge of many of these rare diseases and with a lack of medical experts and treatment options available, people living with rare diseases must become empowered to take control of their own health. Long believes that everyone deserves access to a quick and

GET INVOLVED There is strength in numbers, so get involved with a patient advocacy organization like the HAEA. By becoming a part of a group dedicated to increasing awareness about your disease, you will be able to connect with others who share your journey and you will have access to more resources to help strengthen your own individual advocacy efforts. Create or join a listserv of people with your condition and refer often to your patient association's website to stay updated on disease-related events or news. Become a volunteer for your patient group, perhaps adding your own life experience to educational materials that can be used to help raise disease awareness. EDUCATE YOUR COMMUNITY Educating others can be easy. Ask your doctor to write a letter about your condition to share with your school or employer, or print off information

from your patient group website that you can use to explain your condition to doctors and emergency medical staff in your community. "You can also reach out to your local newspapers, radio and TV stations and ask them to help you raise awareness about your disease," says Long.

BECOME YOUR OWN EXPERT Today's easy access to health-related information and resources on the Internet gives patients the ability to educate themselves about the latest disease research and treatment options, and as a result, become a more informed advocate. Just make sure the resources are from a reputable source, like the National Institutes of Health, a professional medical society website or the official patient advocacy group website. Staying up to date on new treatment developments can also help you better work with your doctor to identify the best treatment option for you. To learn more about HAE and patient empowerment, visit www.HAEA.org, the official website of the US HAEA.

Living with Restless Legs Syndrome

(ARA) - Have you ever experienced creepy-crawly, tinglytightening sensations in your legs just as you sit down and relax, especially in the evening or night? You are not alone. It is estimated that nearly 10 percent of the U.S. adult population experiences the symptoms of restless legs syndrome (RLS) while approximately 2 to 3 percent of adults have moderate to severe RLS. Even though these sensations usually occur in the legs, the fact is that RLS is a neurologic condition. "Although the exact cause of RLS is unknown, studies continue to indicate that RLS is a long-term,

neurological disorder. RLS symptoms often occur when people are about to rest or relax, causing both motor (the urge to move the legs) and sensory symptoms (the sensations in the legs)," says RLS researcher Richard Bogan, MD, president and medical director of SleepMed of South Carolina and associate clinical professor in the University of South Carolina Medical School. "Many people may live with the disruptive symptoms of RLS for years depending on the type they have, primary or secondary RLS," he adds. There are two types of RLS: primary

RLS and secondary RLS. In primary RLS, symptoms tend to become more troublesome as adults get older, which is why most people are diagnosed in middleage. Also, women are twice as likely as men to have RLS, and symptoms tend to become worse over time. Interestingly, a family history is reported by many patients with primary RLS, suggesting a genetic link to the disease. Research in this area is ongoing at respected institutions such as the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, but there are still many aspects of the condition that are not well

Yogurt

From Page 2C ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– Activia Selects represent a way for yogurt lovers to enjoy unique styles and flavors, while satisfying individual taste preferences. "These new yogurts are about finding a taste that fits with your personality," he says. "And that is what I appreciate most about them." A NEW STYLE FOR EATING RIGHT With Activia Selects, yogurt fans have a large selection of flavors and styles to choose from. They also have the satisfaction of knowing that whatever their choice, it will also have the Activia benefit for their digestive systems. "Digestive wellbeing is important to me, and Americans stop me on the street every day to tell me that it matters to them, too," says Jamie Lee Curtis, actress and Activia spokesperson. She stars in a new commercial for Activia Selects in which she takes the viewer on a tour of the world's great tasting yogurts that provided the inspiration for the new, delicious French and Greek styles of Activia Selects. "Activia Selects offers even more choices that can help regulate digestive systems when consumed every day for two weeks as part of a balanced diet and healthy lifestyle, while still enjoying what you eat." Activia Selects are three new styles for yogurt enthusiasts to enjoy, reflecting a variety of foodie cultures and taste preferences. Influenced by France's food culture, French style has a deliciously silky taste. Greek style, rich and textured, is fat-free and an excellent source of calcium and protein. Finally, Parfait style tops lowfat yogurt with granola for a balance between smooth and crunchy. Each style offers its own benefits, whether that's soothing a sweet tooth, helping you stay fulfilled, or providing a combination of textures to satisfy food cravings. "I'm always looking for new ways to eat well while still enjoying my favorite tastes," says Iuzzini. "Activia Selects present lots of new possibilities for snacking or as an addition to mealtime."

understood. Secondary RLS is typically a short-term condition due to an underlying medical condition or certain medications. Examples include kidney failure, low levels of iron and pregnancy. You might have RLS if your symptoms match the following four criteria: * An urge to move the legs, usually accompanied or caused by uncomfortable and unpleasant legs sensations * Symptoms begin or worsen during periods of rest or inactivity such as lying or sitting * Symptoms are partially or totally relieved by movement, such as walking or stretching, at least as long as the activity continues * Symptoms are worse or occur only in the evening or at night Dr. Bogan advises, "If you think your symptoms match the diagnosis criteria for

YOUTH AND TEEN APPRECIATION EVENING

It was a fun evening for all on Sept. 8 when the City of Hallandale Beach Parks and Recreation Director Rebecca Munden Correa, left, and Officer Michael English from the Hallandale Beach Police Department, handed out awards at the annual Youth and Teen Appreciation Dinner.

Dinner recognizes the many accomplishments of the youth and teen volunteers in the community

If you watched recent TV programming that talks about the future, the youngsters of today have become the focal point. They are the group we will all look to as they assume leadership roles in this nation. Because the City of Hallandale Beach recognizes the many accomplishments of the youth and teen volunteers in the community, Thursday, September 8th was indeed a special time to honor these hard working leaders of tomorrow with the annual Youth and Teen Appreciation Dinner. Honorees for the evening included teens who assisted as Counselorsin-Training with the Parks and Recreation program during the summer as well as with events and programs throughout the year. In addition, there were teens from the Human Services Department who helped with the afterschool program along with summer camp, which was one of the most successful ever.

Also, the Police Department members who belong to the Youth Crimewatch and the Hallandale Elementary School Safety Patrol. These children are dedicated to helping ensure the safety of their fellow classmates. The Police Explorers were also on hand for a night that shined a spotlight on those who do so much. This group of teens are training to be future police officers. They are also very involved in community service and they spend time training for competitions held throughout the year. All in all, the evening was one that was enjoyed by everyone. The dinner and recognition for their dedication came along with certificates of appreciation and volunteer pins for all their hard work this past year. Thanks to all the young people in our community who are making a difference!

PAL First Thomas A. Magill Memorial Texas Hold-Em Tournament

On Thursday, August 25, 2011, The Police Athletic League held the 1st Memorial Thomas A. Magill Texas Hold-Em Tournament. The event was held at the Big Easy Poker Room in Mardi Gras. Patricia Magill, her children and other family members were on hand to kick off the event. As Chief of Police in Hallandale Beach, Thomas A. Magill was instrumental in bringing back PAL into the community in 2004 and was a strong supporter until his untimely passing in 2010. Mardi Gras President Dan Adkins and Marcia Slow-Sandler hosted the event and supplied the dealers and room at no cost and offered a free buffet to all players. Over 71 players competed in this inaugural event. The final four players split the $6,000 in prize money,

Solving problems that damage your home and business

WATER LEAKS: DAMAGE HAPPENS QUICKLY It doesn’t take much time for a water leak to do extensive damage to your home or business. In fact, it can happen just hours after the leak occurs. 1st Priority Restoration can find the leak and fix it quickly, using the latest. state-of-theart technology. Its noninvasive, infrared thermal imaging equipment can detect the precise location of the leak within a wall or up to 12 feet underground, greatly minimizing the area of wall or floor that needs to be removed. When the leak is fixed, technicians will fully restore the area to its original condition.

WORKING DIRECTLY WITH YOUR INSURANCE COMPANY To save the home and business owner time and money, 1st Priority will work directly with your insurance company. Its professional staff will identify and assess both visible and hidden damage, submit all bills, and take care of any negotiations. There is no out-of-pocket cost for the home or business owner. This helps you to avoid headaches now as well as in the future. The insurance company adjuster wants the best outcome for the insurance company, and may not actively seek out unseen damage that is behind walls or under floors. 1st Priority, however, advocates for the homeowner, and its technicians will use their skills and experience to identify even the hidden damage that may cause problems in the future if it is not fixed. HOW DO LEAKS HAPPEN? Some leaks happen when water gets in from the outside, such as after a heavy rain or flood. Others can occur within your plumbing system and will unnecessarily increase your water bill. Determining whether you have this kind of leak is easy. Simply read your water meter just before leaving the house for several hours or going to sleep for the night.

vital to keeping the environment in your home or business a healthy one.

When you return, or wake in the morning, read the meter again. If no leak exists, the readings should be about the same. If the second reading is higher, you probably have a leak that is driving up your costs and may be causing unseen damage. If you suspect you have a leak, don’t wait. Call 1st Priority Restoration immediately to fix the problem.

A JOB FOR PROFESSIONALS Detecting and removing toxic mold is not a simple process, and it should be done by a professional. Using the best technology and tools available, 1st Priority Restoration can get rid of the mold in your home or business before it becomes a serious problem. Mold can grow anywhere that moisture exists. Air conditioning ducts are the most common place, but it can also form behind drywall, under carpets, and on furniture and fabrics. And mold may already be growing on a surface that is not yet releasing enough spores so it is visible. The first step in eliminating mold is to do a professional inspection. Just as they do to find water leaks, 1st Priority technicians will use non-invasive thermal imaging to find areas of moisture that are hospitable to spores. To make sure they identify the existence of mold at the earliest stage possible, they will do three types of testing: air quality, wall cavity, and tape samplings. The samples are sent to an outside lab, and results are usually returned within 48 hours.

IS MOLD MAKING YOUR HOME TOXIC? 1st Priority specializes in ridding your home or business of mold that may be making the air you breathe toxic. When mold exists, it can exacerbate symptoms of asthma and other respiratory ailments, as well as cause coughing, sneezing, and headaches. And some people are highly allergic to it. WHAT IS MOLD? Mold is a living organism that can grow very rapidly under certain conditions. It reproduces by emitting microscopic spores that float through the air and land on damp surfaces, where they begin to feed on the material on which they are resting. Thousands of different kinds of molds exist, and some are known allergens. A few produce harmful chemicals called mycotoxins that can seriously affect many parts of the body. But all molds, in the right conditions and in high enough concentrations, can adversely affect human health. Getting rid of mold is

GOODBYE, MOLD Once technicians determine that mold exists, they remove it completely. It is not enough to kill it, be-

cause injurious chemicals and proteins can remain even in dead mold. Permeable material such as drywall must be treated or replaced. Because spores are released during the removal process, 1st Priority Restoration uses an air scrubber to keep the spores from settling. Then, a special Hepa filtering system effectively traps the spores to clean furniture and other surfaces. After the removal is finished, 1st Priority technicians restore the area to its original condition.

UV PREVENTION SYSTEM To avoid the return of mold and to retain the high quality of the air you breathe, 1st Priority Restoration can install an ultraviolet light system that connects to your air conditioning. It kills mold spores before they have a chance to create a problem. The UV system will work continuously, helping to keep your AC ducts clear of mold so you will not have to worry that you may be breathing in toxins.

air quality. Cleaning the ducts can get rid of unwanted substances, as well as reduce cooling costs by allowing the air conditioner to work more efficiently. Because a clean system is less likely to break down, it can also reduce repair bills.

OZONE TREATMENT If your home or business has an unpleasant odor due to smoke damage or biohazards, 1st Priority Restoration can help. Technicians will use a highly effective ozone treatment to eliminate the odor and restore the air quality. 1ST PRIORITY RESTORATION: THE PLACE TO CALL 1st Priority Restoration does it all. Whatever the source of damage or contamination to your home or business might be, 1st Priority can identify it, repair it, and restore the area to its original condition, all while working

directly with your insurance company. The company provides start-to-finish, 24hour service 365 days a year for repairing water, fire and smoke or wind damage, leak detection and repair, and ozone treatment. Technicians follow through with debris clean-up, manipulation and packing, storage, cleaning and sanitizing, using the latest technology to restore your property and belongings to its preloss condition. To save you time, 1st Priority can work directly with your insurance company. 1st Priority Restoration provides the fast action and thorough service that are the most important factors in reducing or eliminating structural damage. Disaster does not knock at the door— it occurs unexpectedly. 1st Priority’s goal is to respond quickly and restore your home or business with the least amount of inconvenience to you.

FALL ENTERTAINING

Try these important tips when feeding family, friends

(ARA) - 'Tis the season to be jolly. Hang the mistletoe, deck the halls and let the party planning begin. To help make your holiday gatherings a stressfree experience, here are some tips for easy entertaining from Deborah Locke, product manager and test kitchen director for RiceSelect, makers of Texmati rice. * When entertaining family and friends, make plans to cook the entree and let your guests bring sides, salads and desserts. * Save time in the kitchen by purchasing breads and desserts from your favorite bakery. * Keep your pantry stocked with specialty rice, couscous or orzo products as the base for quick go-to dishes to boost your menu when last-minute guests show up for holiday meals. * Choose a menu with foods that can be partially or completely prepared in advance. Save as little as possible to prep at last minute. * Shop for non-perishables as far ahead as

possible. * When entertaining holiday guests, everyone typically ends up in the kitchen, so assign kitchen duties and let them help. * Make a list of everything you may need help with. When guests call to offer their assistance, don't hesitate to give them something to do. * With the multitude of dishes served at holiday gatherings, it's easy to run out of serving dishes if you don't plan ahead. Determine in advance which dishes you will use. Set these out with sticky notes reminding you what goes in each dish. "Shopping, parties and the general hustle and bustle leave many families short on time and ideas for everyday family meals," says Locke. "To get you through those days, count on serving hearty one-dish meals that can be made in advance, like soups, hearty salads and casseroles." Locke offers the following award-winning and simple-to-make dishes from RiceSelect's repertoire:

Note: To toast pecans, spread nuts on small baking sheet. Bake at 350 degrees five to eight minutes, or until golden brown, stirring frequently.

Cremini Mushroom & Roasted Garlic Rice Soup. pepper, to taste CRANBERRY PECAN TEXMATI RICE PILAF 2 tablespoons butter or margarine 1 cup uncooked Texmati white or light brown rice 1 (14 1/2-ounce) can chicken broth 1 cup grated Parmesan cheese 1/2 cup dried cranberries 1/2 cup chopped pecans, toasted 1/4 cup sliced green onions Salt and ground black

Directions: Melt butter in 2-quart saucepan over medium heat. Add rice; cook and stir two to three minutes. Add broth and heat to boiling; stir once or twice. Reduce heat; cover and simmer 15 minutes or until liquid is absorbed. Remove from heat. Stir in cheese, cranberries, pecans and onions. Season to taste with salt and pepper.

CREMINI MUSHROOM & ROASTED GARLIC RICE SOUP 1/3 cup butter 1 pound cremini mushrooms, sliced 1 large sweet mild onion, finely chopped 3 cups cooked Texmati brown rice, divided 1 (6 1/2-ounce) container garlic and herbs spreadable cheese 2 (14-ounce) cans roasted garlic seasoned chicken broth, divided 2 cups water, additional if desired 8 slices smoked bacon, cooked and chopped for garnish Salt and pepper to taste Directions: Melt butter in a large non-stick stockpot over medium-high heat. Add mushrooms and onion; cook about 10 minutes, stirring periodically. Let

mixture cool slightly. In food processor or blender, combine mushroom mixture, 1 1/2 cups rice, cheese and 1 cup broth. Pulse mixture until mushrooms are finely chopped, but not pureed and mixture is thoroughly combined. Return mixture to stockpot; stir in remaining rice, broth and water. Bring to a boil; cook uncovered over medium heat for five minutes. Chop bacon and set aside. Add salt and pepper to soup to taste. To serve, ladle soup into bowls; sprinkle with bacon bits.

Note: Serving suggestions: Garnish with additional sauteed mushrooms and chives, sliced green onions, or other fresh herbs, such as sage or thyme.
