With the recent opening of the Casino @ Dania Beach and other

things going on to enhance the City, that spotlight that many talked about is starting to shine bright.

Being five minutes from the Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood International Airport and the beautiful beaches have long been a selling point, but this is a different time - and relying on things

that had been popular in the past is no longer trendy.

“What we needed was something that will continue to bring visitors to this community for more than beaches and a pass through on the way to the airport,” said 24-year Dania Beach resident Bobby Hartley. “I have lived in

south Florida for 50 years and always felt that if Dania Beach did things right with the properties they had, there would be a reason to come here.”

so much to her family and the city, passed away. At the age of 92, still very active in so many organizations and events, Elise Julian leaves a legacy that will live forever.

“My mom was truly the backbone of this family,” said her son, Hallandale Beach Vice Mayor Bill Julian. “She had been there for my father - and after his passing in 1999 - she became my biggest support system right until they end.”

There are approximately 50 million people in the United States who are “edentulous” (literally meaning lacking teeth) who struggle daily with their dentures. A majority suffer a great deal of discomfort as a result of loose or ill-fitting dentures.

Many denture wearers simply withdraw from any type of social engagement as a result of being compelled to wear them. Moreover, it’s not uncommon for family members to complain about a denture wearer’s disagreeable breath as a result of food being trapped and decaying under their dentures. Success-ful placement of the Mini Dental Implant addresses and solves all of these social and practical problems.

Denture patients all over the world have experienced relief from loose or ill-fitting dentures. Uniquely, the MDI can be utilized to stabilize a denture in a couple of hours, with the patient leaving the clinic with a stabilized denture.

How specifically can Mini Dental Implants help denture wearers? The standard insertion protocol for mini dental implants calls for four of them to be gently screwed into the front of a patient’s lower jaw. This is a relatively painless procedure that can be performed under a mild anesthesia.

I’m somewhat aware of the tremendous forces the human jaw usually endures during normal chewing of food. How can these tiny Mini Dental Implants withstand that? Our jaws are marvelously designed to adequately withstand those forces. It’s also true that mankind has been struggling for centuries to come up with some type of metal or metallic element that can efficiently withstand

those forces. Approximately twentyfive years ago some doctors around the world began experimenting with titanium as a potential dental medium.

Titanium is an extremely strong metal used in the construction of aircraft and aircraft engines. The metal, in its commercial form, is incredibly strong and durable. If a denture patient has sufficient bone mass to create a rock hard placement of the tiny implant, which an experienced dentist can usually determine by an initial examination, the mini dental implants will generally withstand normal chewing forces just like natural teeth. Fractures are extremely rare, but as the case with a person’s normal teeth, can certainly occur.

Voters must take a look at all the issues before making that important decision

By Mayor Joy Cooper Hallandale Beach - As election time is upon us, it is imperative that voters take the time to find out about the issues that will change, not just our community, but our county, state and nation. On the City side there are important items that should be on the fore front. Public safety and traffic are the main issues that our residents have said are on the top of their list.

This past budget addressed those goals while keeping the tax rate the same. We also made sure that our citywide cameras and police technology is replaced within 1 year, not 5.

This required the use of reserves. So the message is do not let a few votes fool you. Votes against the budget which must be passed and balanced are votes against our resident’s priorities. Voting no is not a solution nor leadership.

Traffic and transportation have also become fodder. We need additional roadways created and we need to add to our transportation system.

No votes do not get us their either.

We have solutions, but it seems that some commissioners are putting big business before our residents. I cannot mention direct names, but if you would like to talk more with me on these issues, please call me directly.

At our last public hearing, there were comments about our budget

getting bigger and the increase in values. Our budget has grown, but so too have our assets. New parks and a new fire station have been built because of working with our residents.

Our residents want a better quality of life and want improved public safety.

Values have increased, but one needs to look at the historical data.

During the recession, our City took the hardest hit to our values. We did not rush to increase taxes, as a matter of fact, we kept the same rate.

Over the past 10 years, the millage rate has gone down 1.0 mill. Many readers know that I believe government should and can run like a business, but it is not a business. We are required to provide service by law to our communities. We are a not for profit business. We provide public services to businesses at the lowest costs possible.

As cities around our state conclude hearings to adopt their millage rates and budgets for the upcoming year, here is another perspective to consider.

Available at a City near you! Full time security, around the clock, on call emergency medical services, fresh safe water, kitchen and bath amenities, flood and fire protection, trash pick-up, landscaping service, recreational activities for all ages and seamless access to surrounding

cities and attractions. All of these services for only $3 to $15 dollars a day depending on your desired location and size of your accommodations.

On the county side, we are all going to be asked two questions on a ½ penny sales tax. One half will be for countywide transportation and the other ½ will be for City infrastructure.

Both questions must pass by simple majority. 30% of the revenues will come from tourists visiting our area.

For our City, it will mean that we will receive over $3.0 Million annually to address our City streets, flooding, mini bus system.

Currently, we know from our Basis of Design Report over the next 20 years that our infrastructure replacement costs will exceed $200 Million dollars. Without additional revenue streams, our budget depends on property taxes and fees for services, this revenue could go a long way. I believe so much in this intuitive that I have been working it for over 6 months. It has been negotiated and all of the cities and the county are on board.

Elsie Julian 2/7/24 - 9/21/16 (92), born to Julia Mezzonotti and R. Mezzonotti in Fitchburg, Mass.

Preceding in death to husband George Julian, Jr. married 49 years. Also, sister Rena Padovano, brother Rudy Padovano. Leaving behind William A. Julian, her only child.

Racing with husband George, they traveled around all parts of the U.S. and Canada with their throughbred horses for over 51 years. Also, belonged to The Italian American Civic League of Broward County, Kiwanis Club of Hallandale Beach, a member of American Legion, Post 310, Women’s Auxiliary. Listed as a pioneer of Hallandale and Broward County.

Arrived in Hallandale in 1955, racing at Gulfstream Park, and later at Calder Race Course in 1970.

Hallandale has always been her home from 1955 to the present.

Worked to support Pasta Dinners in all of my campaigns and also made sandwiches which provided food for the homeless. Loved to ride in the Corvette, never told me to hold back on auto racing, flying, or building cars.

Mom and I sent 800 care packages to the troops in Afghanistan and she was the oldest member of Hallandale American Legion Women’s Auxiliary. In 1942, her sisters Rina and Elsie started the USO Club at Ft. Devens, Mass. where she also workd on jeeps in the motor pool.

Mom was a great cook. Every day was a different dinner which involved Italian specialties.

A private service will be held and officiated by Commissioner Anthony Sanders and Reverend Joe Jackson from Ebenizer Church at the home of Mayor Joy Cooper.

Her ashes will be laid to rest three miles off Hallandale Beach into the Gulfstream, where the current will take her to New England, the place of her birth. She will be greatly missed!

In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Kiwanis Club, American Legion Post 310, and Hallandale Food Pantry.

National Coffee With a Cop Day coming up Oct. 7 Hallandale Beach Police will celebrate National Coffee With a Cop Day next Friday, Oct. 7, from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m., with a community gathering at the Dunkin Donuts, 201 N. Federal Highway.

Hallandale Beach joined the Coffee With a Cop program earlier this year. The national movement has been growing for several years and departments around the nation have signed on as a way to meet the public in a relaxed setting. It affords residents a chance to see police as regular people, not in a setting of authority. It has helped build relationships and understanding with the community.

This will be the fourth event and each one has grown as the word gets out.

Getting the holidays off to a delicious beginning From soup to brisket and honey cake, Rosh Hashanah is special Butternut Squash & Cider Soup • 1 shallot, sliced • 1 clove garlic, peeled and minced • 3 cups peeled, seeded, and cubed • butternut squash • 1/2 cup chicken broth, homemade or canned • low-sodium • 3/4 cup apple cider • 1/4 cup light sour cream • 1/2 teaspoon salt, plus more to taste • 1/2 unpeeled Honeycrisp or Granny Smith • apple, cored and finely diced • Cracked black pepper Heat a medium-size saucepan over low heat. Add the shallot, garlic, and 1/4 cup water. Cook until the shallot and garlic are softened, being careful not to let them burn, 3 to 5 minutes. Add the squash and the chicken broth and bring to a boil. Reduce the heat, cover, and simmer until the squash is soft, about 20 minutes.

Carefully pour the mixture into a blender. Holding the top down with a towel, blend until smooth. Add the cider, sour cream, and salt. Continue blending until well combined. The soup can be made ahead up to this point. Place in a clean saucepan over low heat until heated through. Season with additional salt if needed.

Ladle the soup among 4 bowls. Garnish with the diced red apple and cracked black pepper. Serve immediately.

Beef Brisket • 1 6-pound first-cut (a.k.a. flat-cut) beef • brisket, trimmed so that a thin layer of • fat remains • 1 to 2 teaspoons all-purpose flour • (or matzoh meal) • Freshly ground black pepper • 3 tablespoons corn oil (or other neutral oil) • 8 medium onions, peeled and thickly sliced

Cover the pot and return to the oven. Lower the heat to 325°F and cook the brisket until it is fork-tender, 1 1/2 to 2 hours. Check once or twice during cooking to make sure that the liquid is not bubbling away. If it is, add a few more teaspoons of water— but not more. Also, each time you check, spoon some of the liquid on top of the roast so that it drips down between the slices.

It is ready to serve with its juices, but, in fact, it's even better the second day. It also freezes well.

3 tablespoons tomato paste Kosher salt 2 to 4 cloves garlic 1 carrot, peeled

Heat the oven to 350°F. Lightly dust the brisket with flour, then sprinkle with pepper to taste. Heat the oil over medium-high heat in a large ovenproof enameled cast-iron pot or other heavy pot with a lid just large enough to hold the brisket snugly. Add the brisket to the pot and brown on both sides until crusty brown areas appear on the surface here and there, 5 to 7 minutes per side.

Transfer the brisket to a platter, turn up the heat a bit, then add the onions to the pot and stir constantly with a wooden spoon, scraping up any browned bits stuck to the bottom of the pot. Cook until the onions have softened and developed a rich brown color but aren't yet caramelized, 10 to 15 minutes.

Turn off the heat and place the brisket and any accumulated juices on top of the onions.

Spread the tomato paste over the brisket as if you were icing a cake. Sprinkle with salt and more pepper to taste, then add the garlic and carrot to the pot.

Cover the pot, transfer to the oven, and cook the brisket for 1 1/2 hours.

Transfer the brisket to a cutting board and, using a very sharp knife, slice the meat across the grain into approximately 1/8-inch-thick slices. Return the slices to the pot, overlapping them at an angle so that you can see a bit of the top edge of each slice.

The end result should resemble the original unsliced brisket leaning slightly backward. Check the seasonings and, if the sauce appears dry, add 2 to 3 tea-

French Honey Cake • 1 cup rye flour • 1 cup unbleached cake flour • 2 teaspoons baking soda • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon • 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg • 1/8 teaspoon ground cloves • 1/2 cup honey • 2 large eggs • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted • 1/2 cup whole milk • 1 cup prunes, chopped Preheat the oven to 350? F. Grease an 8 X 8 inch square cake pan. A parchment square in the bottom might be a good idea if you think the cake will stick to your pan. Grease the parchment too.

Sift the flours into a mixing bowl. Any large pieces of bran left in the strainer can be discarded. Add the baking soda, cinnamon, nutmeg, salt and cloves.

Add the eggs, honey, milk, and butter. Stir with a wooden spoon to combine. Add the prunes and stir to distribute them.

Pour the batter into the pan and bake for 35 minutes or until a cake tester poked into the middle of the cake comes out clean.

Remove it from the oven and let it cool. Dust with powdered sugar if desired. Serve.

The benefits of using the breath to soothe yourself cannot be underscored enough. Slow, quiet breathing helps relax the body and mind and ease the pain. Aim for about six long, deep breaths a minute. * Get a massage. A foot, back, or hand rub can also alleviate pain. Warm oil or lotion may also help you relax. One note: massage in one area for 10 seconds first to see if it feels good. * Invest in a stairlift. (NewsUSA) - Turning 50 seems to come with its own set of challenges, unlike any other age -be it mental, emotional or physical. It's also when your doctor is likely to start urging you to get a colonoscopy even if you do not have any symptoms.

But what used to be an unpleasant, albeit necessary and routine procedure, has now become much less invasive, thanks to new technology. The "virtual colonoscopy" (or CT colonography) is now an

option for most people who can't or don't want to get a standard colonoscopy. It's being embraced by many doctors and insurers nationwide.

Like its traditional counterpart, the virtual colonoscopy entails drinking a laxative 24 hours prior to the procedure. Unlike the traditional colonoscopy, which involves a long camera-tipped tube, the virtual exam inserts only about a two-inch soft tube that sends small puffs of gas to fill the

colon so that a low-radiation dose computer-assisted CT or "CAT" scan can produce two- and three-dimensional views of the colon. The entire procedure takes about 15 to 20 minutes, so you don't need to be put to sleep and you can go right back to daily activities.

The exam has been FDA approved since 1995, and major insurers, including Cigna, United Healthcare, Unicare, Blue Cross/Blue Shield and others, now cover their members for virtual colonoscopies to screen for colon cancer.

The American College of Radiology (ACR) says the last obstacle to tackle is to somehow get Medicare to cover beneficiaries for this life-saving exam so that seniors

can have the same screening alternative as those with private insurance.

Miami Beach - To help raise both money and awareness ,the Village of Bal Harbour 5k Run will benefit with The Mount Sinai Comprehensive Cancer Center a nationally recognized, award-winning facility that utilizes a collaborative, multidisciplinary approach to diagnosing and treating cancer. The event will take place on Sunday, October 16th at 7 a.m.

With a race course that provides beautiful beach views lined with trees through palm Florida’s paradise, this year’s race invites runners of all ages to compete. Age divisions range from 14 to 75.

While all will receive participation medals, awards will be presented to the first, second and third place male and female finishers in all age divisions in an awards
