Reinventing Fitness In The COVID-19 Era

Dr. Stanley Marks Retires After 42 Years Dr. Stanley Marks decision to prioritize research and GME (Graduate Medical Education) benefitted South Floridians during the coronavirus response.

COVID-19 has disrupted our society, but it has also created an opportunity to improve our country’s health. This is an existential choice between two dramatically different visions for our country.

Dr. Stanley Marks, Memorial Healthcare System’s Chief Medical Officer, has retired after a 42-year affiliation with MHS. A general and vascular surgeon, Marks joined Memorial after completing his residency in 1978 and became the system’s C.M.O. more than 22 years ago. “Stan Marks has had a significant impact on the past, present and what will be the future of healthcare in South Florida,” said Aurelio M. Fernandez, III, FACHE, Memorial Healthcare System President and CEO. “We’ll miss his leadership, knowledge, perspective and commitment to delivering the highest quality patient and family-centered care.” Dr. Marks’ clinical and research expertise shaped his vision as an executive, with some of his initiatives helping make Memorial one of the largest

The Lion or The Lamb? half years. He’s probably been grating his whole adult life. That’s the nature of entrepreneurs and most particularly of billionaires. They didn’t get to the top of the heap by playing pattycake or being Mother Theresa. Business in New York and especially real estate development is a gritty, no holds barred hourly slugfest that doesn’t pity the weak, the meek or the failed. There are no trophies for coming in fifth place. It’s Darwinian to the extreme, where only the strongest thrive and rise to ethereal heights. You either get stuff done

COVID-19 is a terrifying wakeup call for out-of-shape Americans. More than four in 10 U.S. adults are obese and 60 percent have at least one chronic disease, putting them at high risk of serious COVID-19 complications -- or worse. Individuals with chronic illnesses are 12 times more likely to die from the virus. In light of President Trump’s recent COVID-19 diagnosis, the dangers of having any of those conditions have been thrust into the national spotlight. Trump is in a high-risk age group, clinically obese and has “elevated” blood pressure -- all of which put him at risk for more severe complications. For decades, healthcare professionals have cautioned people about the dangers of obesity. But those warnings have largely gone unheeded. Until recently, too many Americans viewed exercise

A Stark Choice for President By Howard Barbanel - Opinion

President Donald J. Trump is annoying, abrasive, irritating and somewhat of a jerk, in other words he’s a typical brash, loud and pushy New Yorker of the kind that was prevalent through much of the 20th Century, the kind of person who gave New York a bad name. The kind who made most Americans hate New York, the way they do Frenchmen in Paris. New York City was once rife with hungry “take no prisoners” shtarkers (big shots). They were endemic to the garment center, to finance (many are the wolves on Wall Street), to media, enter-

tainment, fine dining, advertising, fashion, sports and real estate. New York didn’t become the biggest and richest city in the nation and one of the most important in the world because of milquetoast middle managers and bureaucrats. Skyscrapers soared in tandem with edifice complexes and outsized egos. You could see the hustle, bustle and jockeying 24/7 in real time. “The city that never sleeps” as Sinatra put it. And Donald Trump is the embodiment of that ethos, of that culture, of that milieu, it suffuses every cell of his DNA. He has been grating as President these past three and a

Acqua Bistro Continues To Set Culinary Standards The Perrone Family Has Been Doing Italian cuisine the Right Way For he Past 58 Years The Perrone family has been recognized for serving exquisite Italian cuisine for the past 58 years in South Florida and the tradition continues at Acqua Bistro located inside the Aquarius Condominium at 2751 South Ocean Drive in Hollywood Beach. Domenico and brother Frank began making pizza at the once famous Doria’s Italian Restaurant on Federal Highway in Hallandale Beach before becoming the owners in 1970. They developed a steady following in the community and opened Pier Five in 1979 followed by their flagship eatery aptly named Villa Perrone in 1988 located next to Gulfstream Race Park. After 14 lucrative years pleasing the loyal diners with their delectable Italian fare, they closed the doors only to open their next venture years later in downtown Hollywood named Perrone’s Cucina Italiana. Domenico had trained his son

Peter in the art of fine Italian cooking and restaurant management where Peter has taken the reigns from his father managing and preparing all your favorites. Acqua Bistro is a smaller, more quaint establishment than the other Perrone establishments, but diners can enjoy the beautiful ocean view as they join friends or family for lunch and dinner available Tuesday through Sunday. The restaurant will

gladly cater your office party or host a gathering in an adjacent room that can comfortably accommodate up to 70 guests. The lunch menu features hamburgers and cheeseburgers with fries or savor their mouth watering chicken parmigiana hero or the traditional tuna fish sandwich or the popular chicken wings. Many folks choose to eat their dinner earlier and the Sunset Menu is available for

lighter eaters from 4:30-6:30. The entrées include soup or salad and coffee or tea and a dessert. The wide variety of selections range from Spaghetti and meatballs to Grilled Salmon and New York Strip Steak for the carnivores. The meals are served with your choice of potato or vegetable. The traditional dinner menu is quite extensive serving some of your favorite dishes such as Il

Pescatore consisting of fresh clams, mussels, shrimp, scallops and calamari over a bed of linguini or Veal Saltimbocca topped with prosciutto, mozzarella cheese and spinach. Many opt for chicken or veal parmigiana, lasagna or penne a la vodka topped in a pink sauce filled with prosciutto and onion. My personal favorite is the Perrone’s signature seafood classic Snapper Pescatore. It will tantalize the taste buds of those who relish their shellfish as the snapper is served in a light marinara sauce with shrimp, mussels and clams. With the Thanksgiving Day holiday approaching, please join the Perrone family on November 26th for a feast. Call to book your reservation at 954-5891796. Acqua Bistro is located In The Aquarius Building 2751 South Ocean Drive. Hollywood, Fl. 33019. Valet Parking is cheerfully validated inside the restaurant.
