Important Changes In Hallandale Beach By Hallandale Beach Mayor Joy Adams

Hello to everyone. As the year is shifting gears to come to an end, our hard work and dedication to our City has not. In fact,

we are getting better and reaching new levels than before. As the City continues to work hard to ensure that the best services are provided to our resi-

dents and others, a few changes will take place. Rest assured the changes are to better accommodate our community. Effective Monday, October 28, 2019, the

On October 27, 2019 at 8:00 a.m., over 100 members of the community are expected to join with Sea Level Rise Solutions (SLR) Project of South Florida during its 4th Annual King Tide Flooding Event. The event will commence at the corner of Madison Street and South Southlake Drive in East Hollywood, where attendees are expected to witness annual King Tides that will push water over Hollywood’s sea walls and on to low-lying residential streets. “Witnessing the King Tide is like a window into the future of sea level rise in Florida, when we will experience frequent flooding events and the disruption of neighborhoods and businesses in the path of rising waters,” noted Scott Lewis, a founding member of the SLR Project. Both Hollywood’s current Mayor, Josh Levy, and the former Mayor, Peter Bober, along Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz and other elected officials, will be attending in order to bring light to the issue of Sea Level Rise. EDUCATION ISSUES And A New High School For Sunny Isles? By Austin Torres

At a recent Roundtable discussion moderated by Les Winston, President of the Aventura Sunny Isles Beach (ASIB) Chambers of Commerce, a panel of professionals discussed issues regarding the educational system of Miami-Dade County, as well as a recent effort in the direction of building a new high school in Sunny Isles Beach, with the intent of reducing traffic and building a greater sense of community for students and parents. The panel, which included Senator John Pizzo D-F.L., School Board Member, Dr. Martin Karp, and Executive Director of the organization Safe Schools Great Schools, John Capurso, began their discussion by

addressing the issue of funding, which is regarded as the most critically limiting factor in the development of our school system. Pizzo, who is also an active Member of the Appropriations Subcommittee on Education, asserted that Florida is underfunded, spending approximately 23 cents on the dollar for public education. In fact, statistics show that Florida is actually part of the top ten states which spend the least on education. Falling well below average, Florida spends about $8,920 per student, while states such as New Jersey and New York spend $18,402, and $22,366 per student. The clinical diagnosis for mental illness among public

school students is 20 percent, and as of last year we only have one metal health counselor for ever 500 public school students. The lack of funding makes it difficult to cater to the needs of students. “From a statewide perspective and as a dad, they’re woefully underfunded”, says Pizzo. When asked by Mr. Winston about what could be done to increase funding for schools, Pizzo replied that individuals need to hold their representatives accountable. “If you’re involved in local politics, people that are running for office will ask for support, get commitments out of them.” Dr. Karp, who first began servicing the School Board in Education, Page 3A

evidence to link indoor exposure to mold with upper respiratory tract symptoms, coughing, and wheezing in otherwise healthy people and in individuals susceptible with compromised immune conditions. Mold or mold spores may cause asthma attacks in people who have asthma and are allergic to mold. Even in some nonallergic individuals, mold can cause symptoms of irritation in the eyes, skin, and airways. For example, the “black mold” Stachybotrys, along with some other types of mold, produces toxins known as mycotoxins that can cause irritation of the skin and airways in susceptible individuals. Sometimes, people may develop severe reactions to mold exposure. Symptoms of Mold, Page 4B
