all that is evil. That feeling is shared by everyone you run into these days, guarding against anything ever happening like that again - on our soil. From those who have just entered the service to those who have fought for our freedom in many conflicts through the years, there is a feeling of pride for this nation, and nowhere is that more evident than in Hallandale Beach. Twice a year our city's Parks and Recreation Department does a fantastic job of recognizing the brave young men and women who have paid the ultimate price, for the freedom we enjoy, and are currently serving our country today. As President of the Hallandale Historical Board, former Vice Mayor Bill Julian, along with the members, have decided to make this year's Veteran's Day a little more special - for everyone. Giving recognition to those who have made our freedom possible. A few month's ago, Julian started asking our local veterans if they would like to display their pictures and documents of our past, and present family members who have served. The response has been great. "Currently, we have 17 veterans who have submitted pictures for the display," Julian said. "I have taken their originals, photo-copied them, and will be mounted on display boards for all to see and honor." The addition of the Veterans Display will only enhance an event that

Parks and Recreation Director Rebecca Munden-Correa and her staff have worked extremely hard in coordinating each year. On Friday, Nov. 11, the City will host a Veterans Day Salute, starting at 9 a.m. with a placement of flags at the Hallandale Beach Cemetery, 801 N.W. 6th Ave. At 10 a.m., there will be refreshments served at the Hallandale Beach Cultural Community Center, 410 S.E 3rd St. At 11 a.m., the annual ceremony will take place at the Cultural Center and at the Veterans Monument, 400 S. Federal Highway. During the refreshment hour, the display that Julian and others have worked around the clock to put together, will be

introduced with some familiar faces in many of the photos. For so many Veterans Day events, we were honored to have Peter Ventura (FRONT PAGE PHOTO - BOTTOM RIGHT) attend and take part in everything from the flag raising to being recognized as someone who put his life on the line for this country. Ventura's daughter, Joy Cooper happens to be the Mayor of Hallandale Beach. Ventura, a World War II B-24 Radio Operator and Waste Gunner, is pictured along with his crew. Being a military family of three generations, Julian has his grandfather from World War I, an Army Machine Gunner, his father, George Julian, a Combat Glider Pilot, who has in his display all of his war records and pictures from World War II. Julian also served from 19701991-1998 in the Air Force as an Air Cargo Specialist. "We have three gener-

ations of the Gilchrist Family photos," Julian explained. "In addition, we have the legendary Curci family service photo and even a display with our own Historical Club Vice-President, Ed Pickett. Ed was a Navy Pilot during the Vietnam War." Former Hallandale Mayor Joe Scavo, who

served in the Army's Military Police, will have his service history on display for all to see as well. With all that is being displayed for those who are coming out to honor those who have fought, and continue to fight for our freedom, the Historical Board will have on display over 10, handcrafted model airplanes that match the veteran's

missions during the war. Between what the City of Hallandale Beach has planned and the Veterans Display, this will certainly be a special day for all. If anyone would like to add your family to the event, please contact Bill Julian, (954) 2747230, or www.becjuli@aol.co

Emergency Alert System (EAS) will take place on Nov. 9

‘AROUND THE CITY OF CHOICE’

HALLANDALE BEACH - I want to inform our residents of an event that will take place on November 9, 2011 at 2:00 PM for citizens on the east coast and throughout the nation. The Broward League of Cities has shared this event with all elected and appointed officials in Broward County. The Federal Communications Commission and Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) will conduct the first ever nationwide test of the Emergency Alert System (EAS). The EAS (originally EBS) was established in 1963 and, while often used to deliver local and regional emergency and law enforcement bulletins, has never been used, or even tested, on a nationwide basis. The test will be a significant interruption of regular television programming. It will run for about three minutes and should be seen on all channels. In addition, the video (text) portion of the EAS message may not clearly indicate that the alert is only a test. Public safety officials are concerned that the test will prompt high levels of unnecessary calls to 911 from viewers, who, confused by the test, may call with questions. The FCC has made available online a series

of Public Service Announcements and other outreach materials (http://www.fcc.gov/encyclopedia/emergencyalert-system-nationwide -test) if you would like more information. Please share this information with all your friends and neighbors, Thank you. 911 communications is literally the lifeline to our first responders. Since 9/11 our country, state counties and cities have been working to improve all levels of communication to our citizens. National Incident Management System NIMS is a strategic plan that has been implemented to ensure that in the case of emergency all first responders are trained in a national response language. There are different levels of training and certifications that elected officials are required to take. Our city has always been proactive when it comes to critical infra-

structure needed for efficient communications. Back in the early 90ʼs we were one of the first municipalities to partner with Broward County 911 services. Hallandale Beach elected to partner by donating our five communication channels towards a countywide system and close our local dispatch. To date, the service has been providing us with streamlined communications that provide for level of service required by our police and fire departments. Broward County collects 911 fees through local telephone bills. The fees and our County property taxes provide BSO the necessary funding to manage the 911 Call Center on Broward Boulevard in Fort Lauderdale. Not all cities are on the countywide system. Some cities have opted to provide their own service. They receive a credit of the 911 fees and then must provide their own city property taxes to run their dispatch. Over the past 10 years I have been a member of the Broward County Fire Counsel and I am the current Chair. This committee was tasked with implementing the 2002 countywide charter amendment requiring the Broward County provide a countywide communication infrastructure for fire and emergency medical

services to facilitate the closest unit response in life-threatening emergencies. The charter amendment passed by the voters was well intended but did not clarify what infrastructure was to consist of; nor did it include police communications. The committee has been working diligently to bring all the partnering cities up to the same level of equipment to ensure GPS tracking systems are on the trucks. With the exclusion of three northern cities all EMS and Fire departments are interoperable. Non-partner cities are not all connected through GPS and there has been little desire for every city to come on board. In partnership with Broward County and the Fire Counsel BSO technology Staff has been working to bring together the patchwork of 13 different communication centers to streamline operations, cut costs and most importantly, ensure the level of service voters asked for in 2002. The Consolidation Feasibility Analysis suggested that the County could operate with three Public Safety Answering Points (PSAPʼs) for 911. Not only would this cut costs it would improve citizen and officer safety, reduce call transfers that result in delayed response and

provide for an easier cost-effective way to migrate into new technologies. The Fire Counsel has supported this plan but there has been no political will on the county and all cities to make sure the concept implemented. In this case it is so true that “necessity is the mother of all invention”. With the current budget crunch on all levels of government Broward County has been pushing back on municipalities that have not partnered with Broward County to collect for their portion of dispatch costs. The cities that have their own dispatch have been threatening to file suit against the County. While the EMS and Fire issues have been stymied the dispatch issue has created a new interest in addressing overall communications. Broward County League of Cities created a Public Safety Answering Point Task Force. They brought together multiple agencies including the Broward City/ County Management Association, Fire Chiefs Association and the Police Chiefs Association to endorse the 911 Com-

munications and Dispatch Services. This past week Broward County adopted a resolution supporting the creation of the Broward County Consolidation Communications Committee. The members are comprised of designated representation from all affected agencies. The committee will be tasked with developing a plan for implementation. They will be start meeting this month with the goal of delivering the plan to the County and cities for action. On Friday November 11 our city will be celebrating Veterans Day! We encourage our entire community to join us in celebrating and giving thanks to the many Veterans that have served our country. Starting at 9:00 AM the city will be placing flags on War Veteransʼ graves at our cemetery located on Foster Road. At 11 AM there will be a special ceremony recognizing all men and women that have served at the Community Cultural Center behind the library at the corner of South Federal Highway and 3rd Street.

As always please feel free to contact me at any time with your questions and concerns at my office 954-457-1318 or cell/text 954-632-5700 or e-mail me at www.MayorJoyCooper.com

AVOID JOINT REPLACEMENT SURGERY WITH THE ARP WAVE

ARP

From Page 1A –––––––––––––––––––– body to avoid nonproductive compensation patterns that cause pain, and retrains it to allow the positive progression of treatment that accelerates recovery and restores a pain-free lifestyle. The treatment works on all joint problems, tears, sprains, fractures and repetitive injuries such as carpel tunnel. It has been used by thousands of people, including many professional athletes such as Boston Bruins goaltender Tim Thomas. The ARP Wave can help patients avoid hip and knee replacements and provide rapid alternative recovery methods. It is now available for the first time at the Wellco Care ARP Clinic in Hallandale Beach. It is also possible for patients to be treated in their own homes. A TOTALLY NEW CONCEPT “This is a totally new concept in health care delivery,” says ARP Wave inventor Denis Thompson of Minneapolis, MN. “All other branches of soft tissue medicine work on the area where symptoms manifest themselves. But thatʼs not the source of the pain. Ours works where your symptoms begin.” Pain from joint problems and injuries are the result of muscles improperly absorbing force. To try to avoid the pain, the brain turns to the muscles for protection. “The muscles react to the signals from the brain by trying to eliminate the pain through abnormal contractions and movements,” Thompson says. “When this happens, the muscles no longer absorb force correctly. This, in turn, results in inappropriate compensation patterns that become imprinted in muscles and continue to cause pain.” THE ARP WAVE The painless, noninvasive ARP Wave treatment begins with a technician placing an electrode on the patientʼs skin, where it identifies the signals being sent by the nervous system. “It is first a discovery tool,” Thompson explains. “By using it, we find the neurological disconnect that is causing the inability of the muscles to absorb force that results in pain. Wherever there has been trauma, there is inflammation and scar tissue, and thatʼs the area we concentrate on.”

TESTIMONIALS For more testimonials, visit our Website: www.arpwaveclinic.com I had muscle pain in my lower back for years. I spent, and my insurance companies have spent, thousands of dollars by treating the pain (symptom) and not the injury (the muscles in my leg). My good friend and neighbor, a former NHL player and now agent, introduced me to ARP Wave. In one session last week, they identified the problem as a strained ligament in my left ankle By taping together my fibula and tibia (a job my injured ligament used to do) and using ARP Wave I am better distributing my body weight and am largely muscular pain free. I am looking forward to a summer at the cabin, doing all the things I used to do, and have not done recently. -- Tom Finnegan [Indianapolis Colts Pro Bowl Defensive Dwight] Freeney is also using a device called ARP that is similar to a stem device to move the blood supply to the damaged ankle. The ARP operates differently from normal stem devices, but ARP has helped him in past years recover quickly from groin and hamstring pulls. -- Information from ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter, ESPN.com senior writer John Clayton and The Associated Press was used in this report. After 5 years and 15 doctors and no results, I came here and virtually am now muscle pain free. It's nice to feel good again. Randy Hebrink, 48, Low Back, Neck, Rib, Shoulder Pain -- Renville, MN I think the treatment is phenomenal. I came out of the University of Minnesota and was told I'd never play baseball again because of reconstructive surgery on my left wrist and with Ben and the ARP I haven't had any trouble since. That along with my ankle this spring, they said I'd be out 6 weeks, I wasn't even out a week and a half and I didn't miss any games. I'm a walking case for Ben, but he's helped me every time. Kevin Ericcson, 22, Wrist Surgery, Ankle Sprain - Minneapolis, MN

QUICK RECOVERY Once the source of the pain is correctly identified, treatment begins. The ARP Wave method consists of a series of painless treatments, usually about 10 of them, that are each about 20 minutes long. During the treatment, the Wave sends an electrical signal mimicking what the body should normally send on its own to direct force back to the muscles instead of to the joints, and to stimulate the muscles to correctly absorb shock again. “In other words, we retrain the muscles to do what theyʼre supposed to do,” Thompson says. Most patients are able to quickly return to activities they might not have been able to do for years. “Our goal is to help patients avoid surgery, as well as to replace time-consuming recovery methods like rest, ice and compression,” Thompson says. “ Accelerated Recovery Performance is, quite simply, a faster way to help the body heal.”

cause the muscles to perform ineffectively, resulting in pain. The sooner the patient receives the treatment, the better. “By creating

new pathways of communication between the brain and the muscles and re-establishing normal motor patterns early on, we can eliminate the imprinting more quickly,” Thompson says. Second, the treatment decreases swelling and inflammation by increasing blood circulation to the affected joint and limb. “This allows the restoration of mobility so the patient can get back to his or her normal activities and live an active lifestyle again,” Thompson says. The cost is far less than surgery, and pa-

tients avoid the long recovery times and possible side effects associated with surgery. “The ARP Wave helps people feel better fast,” Thompson says. “Our method is not alternative medicine. It is a new, effective form of traditional medicine.” VIRTUAL CLINICS To ensure precise

and effective treatment, technicians at ARP Wave clinics work through computerized technology directly with the expert staff at Minneapolis headquarters. South Florida patients can come to the Hallandale Beach clinic, or technicians can go to their homes to do the diagnosis and deliver the treatments. “One treatment is all it takes to prove it helps,” Thompson says. “Once you experience it, youʼll know it works.”

participate in two of the ways the City of Hollywood is raising money for breast cancer research and support: Flamingo Flocking and the Great Bake Sale. The Flamingo Flocking Fundraiser started on October 10 and runs through November 7, 2011. For a $30.00 donation, a flock of 12 pink flamingos (lawn ornaments) will be delivered and set up in the front yard of any south Broward address. The flamingos will be displayed for 24 hours to honor or memorialize family or friends affected

FDA Approves Fat Zapping Machine Using Cool Light

Prepared by the Marketing Department

ELIMINATE FAT WITH LIGHT By Stacy Reed Living in Florida certainly has its advantages. But the “sun and fun” climate, trips to the beach and an outdoors lifestyle means go-to wardrobe choices that shorts, tanks, mini’s, and of course, swimsuits. And with those choices comes the desire (some would say pressure) to look good in them. Even though many Floridians maintain their health and looks through diet and exercise, most people genetically predisposed to store fat in the hips, thighs and belly. And it’s stubborn fat that stays put, no matter how much they diet or exercise, but now there’s a new weapon on the war against fat: LipoLight. The Lipolight is a body-sculpting procedure that is designed to remove fat and contour the body without surgery. It works by means of cold (laser) light, which is FDA Approved for body circumference reduction, that penetrates the skin safely. There’s no surgery, no needles, and no downtime. The machine works by targeting and liquefying non-active adipose (fat) cells in the body. The Light is placed several inches above the area of the body that we want to eliminate the fat. The fat is then eliminated as waste through the lymphatic system. For more about the technical side, visit www.bestnewbody.com

Getting the treatment The light produces no heat, so it doesn’t feel hot or even warm. Each treatment lasts 40 minutes, and since there is no recovery time, you can have a treatment and then go straight to work, go for a workout, or do anything else you want to do. Results - Lost inches • Many individuals lose 1”-2” inches from their abdomen after the first treatment! • Women can drop one or two dress sizes in as little as four weeks. • The team at ForeverTrim has perfected a protocol over the 20,00 treatments that ensure results. • This new technology - as seen on Dr. Oz, The The Doctors, Rachael Zerona Ray Show, Nightline Lipolaser and Xtra - is the one everyone’s talking about. • Call 954-634-5711 for your appointment. You will be glad you did.

Prostethics: The emotional effects of tooth loss – a preliminary quantitative study

Results: Ninety four people completed the questionnaire of whom 42 stated that they had experienced difficulties in accepting the loss of their teeth. In comparison with people who had no difficulties in accepting the situation, these people were: more likely to feel less confident about themselves; more likely to feel inhibited in carrying out everyday activities and less able to accept inevitable change in facial shape which occurs following the loss of teeth. Additionally, they took longer to come to terms with their tooth loss (All these differences were statistically significant). Just over three-quarters of the people who were unprepared for the loss of their teeth, felt that an explanation from the dentist prior to dental extractions would have helped. Total tooth loss as a serious life event, and the impact of dental ill health on daily living is well recognized, it is only recently that attention has been paid to the emotional effects of tooth loss. A qualitative

study into the emotional effects of total tooth loss revealed a wide range of reactions. The main themes identified in relation to tooth loss were: bereavement; loss of self confidence; concerns about appearance and self image; tooth loss as a taboo subject which could not be discussed with other people; keeping tooth loss secret; the need prosthodontic privacy; behavior change; premature aging; and a lack of preparation for the loss of teeth. A further qualitative study among

people with partial tooth loss uncovered a similar pattern of emotional reactions. A feeling of having lost part of one's self was an additional finding in the partially dentate group. The researchers were surprised at the depth of feeling that existed among the participants of these two studies, particularly, as they were all coping apparently well with dentures. The subjective view was that these feelings were experienced by a significant proportion of edentulous and partially

dentate people. The current study is designed to make the next step by taking a preliminary look at how edentulous people experience the emotional effects of tooth loss.

Patricia M. Bobadilla, D.D.S., Prosthodontist.

Overall quality of life is enhanced with proper dental care.

THE BENEFITS OF DENTAL IMPLANTS The mouth is restored as closely as possible to its natural state. By replacing the entire tooth, including the root, it is possible to replicate the function of natural teeth, with a strong, stable foundation that allows comfortable biting and chewing. In addition, nothing in the mouth looks or feels artificial. Implants preserve the integrity of facial structures. By preventing the resorption that would normally occur with the loss of teeth, the facial structures remain intact. This is particularly important when all of the teeth are missing, as the lower one-third of the face collapses if implants are not placed to preserve the bone. Your smile is improved when replacement teeth look more like natural teeth. Even when only one tooth is missing, long term aesthetics are usually much

better with an implant supported replacement tooth than with a traditional tooth supported bridge. This is particularly important in the front of your mouth, where preventing a visible bone defect is critical for natural appearance. Adjacent teeth are not compromised to replace missing teeth. Tooth replaced with traditional tooth-supported bridges requires grinding down the teeth adjacent to the missing tooth/teeth, so that the bridge can be cemented onto them. This tooth structure can never be replacement and the long-term health of these teeth is compromised. Partial dentures have clasps that hook onto adjacent teeth, putting pressure on them as the partial rocks back and forth. Eventually these teeth can loosen and come out as a result of this pressure. Replacing missing teeth with implant supported crowns/bridges does not involve the adjacent natural teeth, so they are not compromised, or damaged. Overall quality of life is enhanced with replacement teeth that look, feel and function like natural teeth. With implant supported replacement teeth, the appearance of the smile is more natural and teeth function more like natural teeth. The result is increased comfort and confidence when smiling, speaking and eating. If dentures and partials are replaced with implant supported teeth, the overall enhancement in quality of life is even more significant, with an ability to eat all types of foods, elimination of messy adhesives, and improved speech, comfort and appearance. Convenient oral hy-

giene. It is much easier to care for an implant support crown, which can be cleaned like a natural tooth. In comparison, a tooth supported bridge requires the use of a floss threader for proper cleaning. It is also more convenient to clean a full set of implant supported replacement teeth than a traditional denture. Improved appearance. Since implants preserve bone, preventing deterioration of the facial structures, appearance is improved. Collapse of the lower one-third of the face is caused by complete tooth loss can be visually corrected and the remaining bone is preserved. The appearance of wrinkles around the mouth caused by posterior bite collapse, or complete facial structure collapse is virtually eliminated. Restored self-esteem and renewed self-confidence. Many of the people who now enjoy the benefits of implant supported replacement teeth state that their self esteem and self confidence have been restored as a result of improved appearance, function, comfort, and health. Your smile says a lot about who you are. With your smile, you display confidence and ease without ever saying a word. Smiling shows you are comfortable with yourself and who you are. Your smile affects your whole body. From now on, when you pass by someone smile and see the final effect that it has on your confidence.

Managing diabetes: the oral-vision connection

(ARA) - Many are aware of serious diabetes-related complications such as heart disease, nerve damage and limb amputation. However, people may not be aware of how diabetes can affect oral and visual health. November is National Diabetes Month, and primary care physicians, dentists and eye care specialists are urging people to schedule regular checkups. For people with diabetes, these visits can help regulate the disease's impact on dental, visual and overall health. For people who are not aware that they might have diabetes, certain signs and symptoms can help diagnose the disease. One-quarter of the 26 million Americans with diabetes, and 90 percent of the 79 million adults with pre-diabetes, are unaware of their condition, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). "There are many people who do not know that they have diabetes, or are at risk for developing diabetes, and this puts a premium on diagnosis. The eyes and mouth can be a window into your health," says Dr. Michael D. Weitzner, vice president of National Clinical Operations for UnitedHealthcare's dental business. Periodontal disease, an infection that affects the gum tissue and

bone that hold one's teeth in place and can lead to bad breath, abscesses and tooth loss, may be a first indicator that a person may not have control of his or her blood sugar level. "Diabetes has the potential of weakening one's ability to fight bacteria in the mouth and throughout the body. Unmanaged blood sugar can lead to difficulty fighting infection appropriately, paving the way for serious gum disease," says Dr. John Luther, chief dental officer at UnitedHealthcare. "Because periodontal disease is often painless, people may not know they have it until the damage has already been done." Diabetes also makes people more prone to other dental problems, including oral infections, thrush and dry

mouth. Dr. Luther recommends diabetes patients: schedule dental checkups every six months and alert their dentists that they have diabetes; make sure to take normal medications prior to dental visits unless your dentist or doctor instructs otherwise; and maintain an oral health care regimen of regular and rigorous flossing and brushing using toothpaste with an antiplaque or antibacterial ingredient and preferably with an electric toothbrush. The relationship between diabetes and visual health is also significant. "Eye examinations play a significant role in diagnosing, monitoring and managing diabetes," says Dr. Linda Chous, chief eye care officer at UnitedHealthcare. "According to the

CDC, recent studies show that keeping one's blood glucose levels close to normal can help prevent or delay the onset of diabetes-related eye disease." Diabetic retinopathy, which occurs when the disease damages the tiny blood vessels that nourish the retina, is the leading cause of blindness in the United States among people between 20 and 74 years old. People with either type 1 or type 2 diabetes are at risk of developing diabetic retinopathy; the National Eye Institute estimates that between 40 and 45 percent of Americans diagnosed with diabetes have some form of retinopathy. Vision complications related to diabetes extend beyond retinopathy to include increased risk of devel-

oping glaucoma and cataracts. "All patients with diabetes should receive a comprehensive dilated eye exam at least once a year," Dr. Chous says. "Equally important, the dilated eye exam can help detect diabetes in those unaware that they have the condition. Oftentimes a patient will come in for a routine exam and the eye doctor will find evidence that the patient is at risk for diabetes or might in fact already be diabetic and will refer that patient to his/her primary care physician for further testing." Since there are often no outward signs or pain associated with the early stages of diabetes, changes in vision such as blurriness, seeing spots or persistent redness can be

symptomatic of the disease. "Sudden shifts in blood sugar can cause changes in the eye lens that can lead to fluctuations in a person's eyeglass or contact lens prescription," Dr. Chous says. Other vision-related complications of diabetes that can serve as early indicators of the disease include double vision, dry eyes and lid infection. "People with diabetes have special health considerations," Weitzner says. "This National Diabetes Month, don't forget to make dental and visual care a priority." What to expect from marriage counseling

Q...Dr. Ron... My wife and I are considering marriage counseling, but I'm hesitant to begin because I have known quite a few couples that have broken up shortly after counseling... Also, isn't it always best to stay together for the sake of the kids? A...The aim of marriage/couples counseling, in my opinion, is not always to help reconcile a relationship, but often to help a relatioship break-up as painlessly as possible. While reconciling a relatioship is the most commom expectancy from therapy, the main job of the therapist is to offer a safe and neutral space for both parties to explore the thinking and behaviors that have led each other to be in the situation they are currently in. Once this is established, a committment to change some thinking and behavior is needed to help establish the foundation for a new healthier relationship. However as often as it may be, one or both parties can't or won't commit to the necessary changes to help establish a healthy relationship, and a termination of the relationship will ensue... What is even worse; however, is when both parties remain together, offering no substantial changes, making each other miserable for the rest of their lives. As far as keeping

living together in a hostile, tension filled environment is even worse. If the parents are good, consistant parents, the negative impact of divorce is often minimal. I hope this has helped you understand the realities of therapy, and how they matched your expectancies..... Good Luck.

things together for the sake of the children..., well this of course is a major consideration, but studies have shown that although divorce does indeed impact the child,

Fire Hydrant Flushing

Hallandale Beach Fire Rescue will be flushing Fire Hydrants in the Southwest section of the City from November 13 to December 18. This process is necessary to ensure, for your safety, there is adequate water pressure and flow in the event of a fire. Flushing the hydrants may temporarily cause an orange tint to your water. This in no way indicates any contamination of the water but may cause discoloration in your wash and is only a temporary condition. During this period, please open your faucets and check for discolored water. Should the water continue to run discoloration longer than five to ten minutes please contact the Water Department at (954)457-1632.

CURCI HOME TOURS

This weekend will be special in Hallandale Beach as the landmark Curci House will open its doors for tours on Saturday, Nov. 5, and Sunday, Nov. 6 from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. Located at 324 S.W. 2nd Ave., the tours, provided by members of the City of Hallandale Beach Historical Preservation Board, takes visitors into this unique world that began in 1907 when Frank Anthony Curci, with his wife, Rosina and three small children, settled in Hallandale Beach at S.W. 5th Ave.and W. Dixie Highway. As a pioneer family, they struggled, yet grew prosperous by reinvesting their family profits into land purchases, which they used for additional tomato fields and fruit groves. As the family grew to a total of 11 children, so did Curci's vision as he expanded into the construction business. Mr. Curci spoke five languages and was also an accomplished violinist, displaying his talents with the John Phillip Sousa Orchestra during the 1896 grand opening of the Henry Flagler

Royal Palm Hotel in Miami. In 1924, the family built their dream home, "Villa Providence," on their 11acre site. The Mediterranean style villa was constructed of concrete

filled terra-cotta block walls, with Dade pine floors and imported Cuban tile details throughout. The most extraordinary feature was the array of imported Italian color glass that

was imbedded in the exterior stucco finish. The Italian glass sparkled in the sunlight and glowed in the moonlight. In 1926, when the Great Hurricane hit, dozens of nearby residents sought shelter with the family as their homes were damaged or destroyed. The Curci home stood strong, sustaining only minor damage, Frank, Rosina and family lived in the home until the early 1950s. For more information, call the Department of Parks & Recreation at 954-457-1452.

INSIDE: SUN TIMES RECIPES

Solving problems that damage your home and business

WATER LEAKS: DAMAGE HAPPENS QUICKLY It doesnʼt take much time for a water leak to do extensive damage to your home or business. In fact, it can happen just hours after the leak occurs. 1st Priority Restoration can find the leak and fix it quickly, using the latest. state-of-theart technology. Its noninvasive, infrared thermal imaging equipment can detect the precise location of the leak within a wall or up to 12 feet underground, greatly minimizing the area of wall or floor that needs to be removed. When the leak is fixed, technicians will fully restore the area to its original condition.

WORKING DIRECTLY WITH YOUR INSURANCE COMPANY To save the home and business owner time and money, 1st Priority will work directly with your insurance company. Its professional staff will identify and assess both visible and hidden damage, submit all bills, and take care of any negotiations. There is no out-of-pocket cost for the home or business owner. This helps you to avoid headaches now as well as in the future. The insurance company adjuster wants the best outcome for the insurance company, and may not actively seek out unseen damage that is behind walls or under floors. 1st Priority, however, advocates for the homeowner, and its technicians will use their skills and experience to identify even the hidden damage that may cause problems in the future if it is not fixed. HOW DO LEAKS HAPPEN? Some leaks happen when water gets in from the outside, such as after a heavy rain or flood. Others can occur within your plumbing system and will unnecessarily increase your water bill. Determining whether you have this kind of leak is easy. Simply read your water meter just before leaving the house for several hours or going to sleep for the night.

When you return, or wake in the morning, read the meter again. If no leak exists, the readings should be about the same. If the second reading is higher, you probably have a leak that is driving up your costs and may be causing unseen damage. If you suspect you have a leak, donʼt wait. Call 1st Priority Restoration immediately to fix the problem.

IS MOLD MAKING YOUR HOME TOXIC? 1st Priority specializes in ridding your home or business of mold that may be making the air you breathe toxic. When mold exists, it can exacerbate symptoms of asthma and other respiratory ailments, as well as cause coughing, sneezing, and headaches. And some people are highly allergic to it. WHAT IS MOLD? Mold is a living organism that can grow very rapidly under certain conditions. It reproduces by emitting microscopic spores that float through the air and land on damp surfaces, where they begin to feed on the material on which they are resting. Thousands of different kinds of molds exist, and some are known allergens. A few produce harmful chemicals called mycotoxins that can seriously affect many parts of the body. But all molds, in the right conditions and in high enough concentrations, can adversely affect human health. Getting rid of mold is

vital to keeping the environment in your home or business a healthy one. A JOB FOR PROFESSIONALS Detecting and removing toxic mold is not a simple process, and it should be done by a professional. Using the best technology and tools available, 1st Priority Restoration can get rid of the mold in your home or business before it becomes a serious problem. Mold can grow anywhere that moisture exists. Air conditioning ducts are the most common place, but it can also form behind drywall, under carpets, and on furniture and fabrics. And mold may already be growing on a surface that is not yet releasing enough spores so it is visible. The first step in eliminating mold is to do a professional inspection. Just as they do to find water leaks, 1st Priority technicians will use non-invasive thermal imaging to find areas of moisture that are hospitable to spores. To make sure they identify the existence of mold at the earliest stage possible, they will do three types of testing: air quality, wall cavity, and tape samplings. The samples are sent to an outside lab, and results are usually returned within 48 hours. GOODBYE, MOLD Once technicians determine that mold exists, they remove it completely. It is not enough to kill it, be-

cause injurious chemicals and proteins can remain even in dead mold. Permeable material such as drywall must be treated or replaced. Because spores are released during the removal process, 1st Priority Restoration uses an air scrubber to keep the spores from settling. Then, a special Hepa filtering system effectively traps the spores to clean furniture and other surfaces. After the removal is finished, 1st Priority technicians restore the area to its original condition.

UV PREVENTION SYSTEM To avoid the return of mold and to retain the high quality of the air you breathe, 1st Priority Restoration can install an ultraviolet light system that connects to your air conditioning. It kills mold spores before they have a chance to create a problem. The UV system will work continuously, helping to keep your AC ducts clear of mold so you will not have to worry that you may be breathing in toxins. AIR DUCT CLEANING Mold is not the only contaminant that gets into air ducts. Airborne bacteria and viruses can also grow freely there, causing respiratory problems. Standard disposable fiberglass filters remove only a small portion of these contaminates. The rest can be spewed back out into the home, where they cause poor

air quality. Cleaning the ducts can get rid of unwanted substances, as well as reduce cooling costs by allowing the air conditioner to work more efficiently. Because a clean system is less likely to break down, it can also reduce repair bills.

OZONE TREATMENT If your home or business has an unpleasant odor due to smoke damage or biohazards, 1st Priority Restoration can help. Technicians will use a highly effective ozone treatment to eliminate the odor and restore the air quality. 1ST PRIORITY RESTORATION: THE PLACE TO CALL 1st Priority Restoration does it all. Whatever the source of damage or contamination to your home or business might be, 1st Priority can identify it, repair it, and restore the area to its original condition, all while working

directly with your insurance company. The company provides start-to-finish, 24hour service 365 days a year for repairing water, fire and smoke or wind damage, leak detection and repair, and ozone treatment. Technicians follow through with debris clean-up, manipulation and packing, storage, cleaning and sanitizing, using the latest technology to restore your property and belongings to its preloss condition. To save you time, 1st Priority can work directly with your insurance company. 1st Priority Restoration provides the fast action and thorough service that are the most important factors in reducing or eliminating structural damage. Disaster does not knock at the door— it occurs unexpectedly. 1st Priorityʼs goal is to respond quickly and restore your home or business with the least amount of inconvenience to you.

Dinner club tips: Mussel up your menu

(ARA) - Dinner clubs have been a popular activity for many Americans for decades. And why not? Combining the best of fabulous food and good friends with whom to share it, dinner clubs (or supper clubs as they are sometimes known) provide a regular opportunity for group members to get together and enjoy delicious meals together. Whether you're a seasoned pro or wanting to try a dinner club for the first time, there is bound to be some anxiety over what to prepare. This is where the versatility of Prince Edward Island (PEI) mussels can get your creative culinary juices flowing. "These mussels really offer something for dinner club hosts from all skill levels," says Chef Lindsay Cameron Wilson, the official chef of the Mussel Industry Council's website DiscoverMussels.com. "Whether you're a novice wanting to do a dish that seems a bit exotic but remains easy to prepare, or a pro in the kitchen wanting to explore new flavor territory, there's a mussel recipe for you." For the uninitiated, shellfish dishes some-

gathering or for a healthy meal at home. With recipes from the flavor capitals of the world, you'll find numerous ways to prepare these delicious and sustainable mussels from PEI.

ciated with mussels, and as a bonus it pairs wonderfully with many different wines - another fun element of many dinner clubs." Many dinner clubs are themed and offer meals from a different part of the world each month. The wonderful flavors of fresh mussels are as at home in classic European dishes like mussels Provencal as they are in sweet Thai dishes, exotic Asian dishes or spicy dishes like mussel laksa from India. The Canadian Mussel Industry Council website at www.discovermussels.com is home to a wealth of recipes to try for your next dinner club

times seem daunting, but are often easier to prepare than first thought. For a simple yet impressive recipe, Chef Lindsay recommends Mussels with Greens and Blue Cheese. For a more complex recipe that is very rewarding, she suggests dinner club enthusiasts try Mediterranean Mussel Salad. "As these recipes show, one of the great things about PEI mussels is their versatility," says Linda Duncan, executive director of the Mussel Industry Council. "The meat is plump, sweet and tender and lends itself to a variety of dishes from around the world. There's a rich flavor profile asso-

MUSSELS WITH GREENS AND BLUE CHEESE 5 pounds fresh PEI mussels 2 tablespoons olive oil 7 ounces pancetta, prosciutto or bacon, diced 2 shallots, minced 1 cup white wine Juice and zest of one lemon 7 ounces creamy blue cheese Arugula, spinach or watercress (large) Sea salt and pepper to taste Crusty bread to serve Rinse fresh blue mussels in tap water and set aside. Discard any mussel that does not close after being rinsed. Heat oil in a large pan over medium-high heat. Add pancetta, prosciutto or bacon and cook, stirring occasionally, until crispy. Add shallot and cook, stirring, for two to three minutes more. Add white wine, lemon juice and

blue cheese. Stir briefly, then add mussels. Cover and leave to steam for five to seven minutes, or until mussels are open. Discard any mussels that do not open. Toss in greens and salt and pepper to taste. Transfer to a serving platter and garnish with lemon zest. Serve with slices of crusty bread. MEDITERRANEAN MUSSEL SALAD 5 cups baby spinach, chiffonade (leaves sliced finely into long strips) 2/3 cup extra virgin olive oil 1 tablespoon chopped fresh tarragon 2 teaspoons natural honey 1 cup cooked fresh PEI mussels, shucked and chopped 1/4 cup lemon juice and zest 1/4 cup cucumbers, finely diced 1/4 cup tomatoes, finely diced 1/2 cup red and yellow peppers, finely diced 3 tablespoons kalamata or black olives, pitted and sliced 1 tablespoon chopped fresh basil 2 teaspoons fresh whole grain mustard

2 tablespoons feta cheese, crumbled (for garnish) Salt and ground black pepper

Combine the spinach and tarragon in a large bowl. Lightly toss spinach and tarragon with the olive oil (1/4 cup oil blended with the honey). Season with salt and pepper and set aside in the refrigerator. Wash the fresh blue mussels in cold water. Set aside, discard any that do not close. Steam mussels in a covered pot until they open up (five to seven minutes), discarding any mussels that do not open. Remove meat from shells and set aside. Combine lemon juice, mustard, and herbs. Whisk in 1/3 cup olive oil in a light stream until fully incorporated. In a separate bowl, combine mussels, cucumber, tomatoes, peppers and black olives. Gently toss with the prepared vinaigrette. Set in the refrigerator for one hour to allow the flavors to combine. Season the chilled salad with salt and black pepper. Garnish with feta cheese and serve immediately.
