continue to be creative during those long, hot summer months, this is the one week we have all looked forward to - for the past seven months. This past summer was very long, and while we can sit here and complain about the economy and how bad it is, this is the time of year we all can do something about it. Over the next few weeks, we will have a jumpstart of a season that just may be our best in recent years. –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– BLUSTEIN, Page 6A

derstands the meaning of compassion. “Our doctors treat, not only the body, but also seek to provide compassionate and empathetic care to all of our patients,” says Dr. Christopher Chen, Cardiologist. Chen Medicalʼs diverse team includes doctors and staff who speak several languages, including: English, Russian, Hebrew, Spanish and Creole, just to name a few. By connecting with patients and listening to their concerns, Chen Medicalʼs physicians take away some of the stress associated with healthcare treatment. With eight state-of-theart locations throughout North Dade and South Broward, patients are able to choose a center closest to them. Furthermore, we understand that getting to your doctorʼs appointments can sometimes be a challenge, which is why Chen Medical offers complimentary transportation to our qualifying seniors. Part of the Chen Medical philosophy is coordination of care. Why should patients have to go from one specialist office to another? Chen Medical brings the specialists to the patient! We have over 30 specialties available in the office, including Cardiology, Podiatry, Nephrology, Oncology, and Rheumatology. Our internal referrals department ensures that the patient receives their referral as soon as possible, which in many cases is before they leave their visit. The ChenMed Difference is evident in the treatment and care we give our patients. This is why over 97 percent of all patients surveyed would recommend Chen Medical to a family member or friend. Chen Medical is proud to offer a variety of benefits and services in one convenient location. The secret to our One-Stop Care Approach is in our people, technology, and innovation. While many primary care physician practices provide quality healthcare, often times they lack the complete experience. Chen Medical offers a complete, compassionate, and quality experience. Your health is important. We know change is hard, but Chen Medical has the solution. Not yet convinced? and peace of mind. Receiving a Flu shot can protect you during cold and flu season. How does the Flu shot work? The vaccine works by exposing your immune system to the virus. The virus is dead, however. When your body is exposed to the dead virus, it builds up antibodies to the virus and protects you from getting the Flu. Can the Flu Shot give you the Flu? No, the flu shot cannot give you the flu and the flu shot does not make you sick. So what are you waiting for? Visit any Chen Medical Center to receive your Flu shot. HAPPY (HEALTHY) THANKSGIVING FROM YOUR CHEN MEDICAL CENTERS FAMILY This holiday season, Chen Medical has a great deal for which to be thankful. Chen Medical Centers wants to thank all of our patients for making us a part of your family. At Chen Medical Centers, we treat our patients as a member of our own family. We believe that your health is most important, which is why our doctors act as advocates for our patientsʼ health and wellbeing. Come in for a health screening with your ChenMed doctor. To schedule an appointment, call 305-6986500. HEALTHY HEART, HEALTHY LIVING Chen Medical Centers is an advocate for healthy living. Our doctors understand that maintaining a healthy lifestyle is important to overall health and wellness. Chen Medical encourages all patients to eat a balanced diet and engage in exercise regularly to maintain a healthy heart and body. Here are few tips from your ChenMed doctors on how to maintain a healthy heart and body: Fill up on fruits and vegetables. Eat a variety and remember…no single food supplies all of the nutrients you need for balanced nutrition. Drink plenty of water throughout your day to flush toxins and avoid dehydration. Limit your sugar and
salt intake. Foods high in sugar can leave you feeling sluggish, while foods high in sodium are damaging for your heart. The key to maintaining a healthy diet is preparation…so plan to eat healthy! Create weekly menus and make an effort to shop for fresh, wholesome foods. Eat plenty of whole grains, such as whole wheat bread, brown or wild rice, and whole wheat pasta. Exercise regularly for at least 30 minutes. A simple exercise routine may include a morning or evening walk, swimming, or water aerobics. Eat moderate portions and have regular meals to maintain a healthy blood sugar level and steady metabolism. Choose foods low in saturated fat and high in fiber whenever possible. Foods high in fiber, such as beans, spinach, and popcorn will keep you feeling fuller longer. Cook at home more often. Eating out can be expensive, and it is also less healthy than cooking your meals at home. Eat breakfast! Start your day and your metabolism with a nutritious breakfast every day. If you have any questions or if you would like to speak to a Chen Medical doctor, contact Chen Medical Centers at 305698-6500. THE CHENMED DIFFERENCE: CHENMED RX Have you ever had to wait at the pharmacy? Chen Medical Centers offers on-site prescriptions for qualifying patients. We have a robotic digital pharmacy in each of state-of-the-art medical centers. Our on-site prescription system allows patients to receive their prescription drugs right in the office. No pharmacy, no waiting! Each center carries over 200 generic prescriptions, including most maintenance drugs such as blood pressure, cholesterol and diabetes medication. The best part is that patients receive their medicine from their doctor, not a pharmacy technician. This ensures that each patient has their questions answered before they leave their doctorʼs appointment. Chen Medical does not charge patients a co-payment for the prescriptions, and most prescriptions are available in 90 day quantities. At Chen Medical, our patients will regularly receive a prescription drug review by their doctor. Patients are asked to bring all their medicine bottles to a doctorʼs appointment. The doctor will
go over each medicine to identify any old or expired medicines. The doctor will also review all current medications to ensure that their patient is taking the correct dosage. If you have any questions or if you would like to speak to a Chen Medical doctor, contact Chen Medical Centers at 305698-6500. THE CHENMED DIFFERENCE: ONSITE DIAGNOSTICS Chen Medical Centers provides convenient onsite diagnostics and tests without the need of a referral. The following is a list of on-site diagnostics offered in our office: Blood work, Digital XRay, Doppler, Echocardiography, EKG, Holter Monitor, Nerve Conduction Test, Spirometry, Stress Test, Ultrasound. Having technologically advanced offices means that patient medical records are accessible from a secure remote system which allows doctors to access patient records from anywhere at any time. Doctors are able to access patient records from a mobile device, enabling them to act quickly when patients are admitted to the hospital. Additionally, patients can be seen in any one of our eight state-of-the-art centers and all physicians are able to instantly access the patientʼs medical record. While we cannot entirely avoid a wait time in our lobby, we try to make your wait time minimal and as comfortable as possible. Davin Joseph continues to give back to his community
‘AROUND THE CITY OF CHOICE’
HALLANDALE BEACH - If you are like me, as a kid the holidays could not come soon enough. It seemed like forever waiting in anticipation. Now it is hard to believe it is already Thanksgiving, Hanukkah, Christmas and the New Year are right around the corner. This past Monday I had an opportunity to visit a special event hosted by Tampa Bay Buccaneer Davin Joseph. For our readers who may not know, Davin was born and raised here in the city and is a graduate of Hallandale High School. He is not a typical star athlete. He is homegrown and has not forgotten his roots. He, along with Foundation Director, Angel Williams and many volunteers, held a special Thanksgiving Dinner Celebration on Monday night. In addition to dinner, the organization, along with student and teacher volunteers from Hallandale High School, delivered over 150 turkeys and fixings to needy families right here from our city. Davin is big and tough on the field, but off the field he is a quiet, kind man with a caring heart. He is a great example for many young students and players from Hallandale High School Chargers Team. Even after a tough Sunday on the playing field he made sure he flew in for the
event. This past weekend Vice Mayor Sanders ,along with men and women of Hallandale Beach Fire Benevolent Association, helped to distribute turkeys to other needy families in the Palms Area. The Hallandale Food Pantry, under the leadership of Paul Snow, along with many Marlins players and volunteers, distributed hundreds of turkey dinners for the many residents he services on a weekly basis. During these tough economic times, with unemployment hovering around 10%, we cannot forget the less fortunate in our community. Christmas is right around the corner and many of these organizations; particularly the food pantry, can use your donations. Please remember you can donate non-perishable food items at City Hall and other Park locations during the holiday season. You can also sim-
ply donate financial contributions to these organizations. Please help ensure that our neighbors and friends here in the city do not go hungry over the holidays. You can also help our city by shopping local. American Express launched a campaign this weekend called shop small. I couldn't agree more but I want to add “shop small and local”. We are fortunate here in our city to have a wide array of shopping opportunities. There are many stores that can provide quality merchandise and services so you can check everything off on your list. Fashion Row and Art District on N. 1st Ave. has many boutiques where you can buy perfume clothing art jewelry and even homewares. Also many stores up and down Hallandale Beach Boulevard and Federal Highway offer a wide array of products including electronics, furniture, clothing, accessories, sporting goods, etc. You can also buy the gift that keeps giving on giving; gift certificates. Why not buy a special manicure and pedicure from one of the many salons, or a gift certificate for that special night out on the town. Just think if you at the minimum by one or two gifts on your list right here in the city you will help support our local economy. Most im-
portantly you will help support job retention in our community. Letʼs keep our own working! In the upcoming weeks the city will be celebrating the holidays. There are many activities planned for all ages. Our Parks Department will be hosting the annual Holiday Lights Celebration. This event, due to construction taking place at the Hallandale Shopping Center, could not be brought back to the Boulevard. Once again, Gulfstream Park has graciously offered to allow us to hold the event in their NW parking area from 6-9 Pm December 2nd. There will be games, entertainment, rides and of course a visit from Santa Claus. The event is free except for the rides. Wrist bands will be on sale for $3 dollars. Gulfstream will also once again be hosting their annual holiday lights which are magnificent. A show of synchronized light and music will be conducted on the hour every day until the New Year. They are also hosting the largest Hanukkah Celebration in partnership with Chabad of South Florida. On December 26th at 7:00 PM there will be a free concert. There are reserved seats available at $ 100. Under the leadership of Rabbi Tennenhaus, the temple has been able to
put together an event that is televised around the world. The event is very costly to put on and regretfully the main sponsor of the event has passed away. Chabad of South Florida is looking for sponsors of this event. If you're interested in participating, please contact the Rabbi at 954-4581877 and help support this great tradition. A new special holiday treat will be taking place this year at Mardi Gras. The annual “Toy Run” has asked to kick off their bike run from our city. I have participated in this event as the mayor for many years and have always asked them to bring it to our community. What a great cause. It is totally run through volunteers, bike clubs and donations. “Toys in the Sun Run” is an event where around 30,000 motorcycles will be staged in the parking lot on December 11th .The ride will start at 9:30 am when they will proceed out west onto Pembroke Road and end up at Markham Park where there will be many vendors and bands playing on a large stage with Travis Tritt is the main attraction. All the bikers have to bring is a “Toy for a Tot”. If you are up for a bit of comedy the Annual PAL Comedy Club fundraiser will be held at Gulfstream Saturday December 3rd. There is
great talent lined up this year. You can purchase tickets at our Parks Department office located at the Community Cultural Center behind the library at Federal and 3rd Street. They are only $35 per person and include an Hors dʼoeurves reception from 7-8 with curtain up at 8. If you cannot attend you can always buy a raffle for a chance to win a flat screen or two others prizes. For information call 954457-1466. Last, but not least, the Hallandale Beach Symphonic Pops Orchestra will be returning to Gulfstream for another great season. December 4rd at 7:30 PM the season will begin with 5 concerts being held monthly. Tickets are on sale. Please contact the box office at 954-6246829 for more information. You can see the “City of Choice” has plenty to offer this Holiday Season. Wishing you a Happy and Safe Thanksgiving Weekend! And do not forget to keep it local. As always please feel free to contact me at anytime with your questions and concerns at my office 954-457-1318 or cell/text 954-6325700 or e-mail me at www.MayorJoyCooper.com.

Levitt-Weinstein Memorial Chapels & Cemeteries along with Blasberg Rubin-Zilbert have been involved in the South Florida community for over half a century. Along with all this growth, Beth David has also begun construction on a new mausoleum building. “Our goal at Beth David is to grow and expand to meet the needs of the community and families that we serve. As long as the needs of our families continue, we will keep growing and developing.” Says Marc Rubin, Area Sales Director. Levitt-Weinstein Memorial Chapels & Cemeteries along with Blasberg Rubin-Zilbert have been involved in the South Florida community for over half a century. What distinguishes Levitt-Weinstein & Blasberg Rubin-Zilbert is that these South Florida institutions are still operated by the third generation of the original founding families. Life is uncertain, and it's important that the final resting place of a loved one be agreed upon. Our full-service
funeral homes and cemetery are proud to be independently owned and locally operated. We are not a public company traded on the stock market. Michael Blasberg, General Manager, said, "We have directors with over 100 years of combined arranging experience and are sensitive to the needs of families. We strive to build on our long-term relationships and create new ones that will stand the test of time." The services provided by Levitt-Weinstein Memorial Chapels & Cemetery along with Blasberg Rubin-Zilbert, though, dedicated to the Jewish community, are available to people from all walks of life. Although our cemetaries are strictly for Jewish burials, our funeral homes are available to service all faiths. Marc Rubin, Area Sales Director, said, "Whether your loved one is staying locally or transferring out of state, the funeral home is here for the needs of all people
that we serve. The advantage of being privately owned and managed is that decisions can be made quickly." "People make choices in life and plan ahead for many things," Rubin says. "When a death occurs, why place the burden on your family to make those eternal decisions for you? What if unforeseen situations arise, wouldn't you feel better knowing you made your plans beforehand?" Shari Bradley, Marketing Director, said, "One of the benefits of dealing with us NOW is that you're planning in advance, saving money and relieving your family of stress by having to make the last minute decisions when youʼre not necessarily thinking rationally." "Approximately 90% of the families we service have been prearranged," Rubin said. When you think about it logically, it makes sense because it is just another part of Estate Planning, like your Will; and you can handle your funeral and
cemetery wishes at the same time with us." Rubin goes on to say,"What are you going to do when a death occurs? It's important that each person has a pre-arranged plan. A person can set up a financial plan paid out over a period of time with no interest charges. One day you will need it, so why wait for that day to suddenly come? Longterm planning locks in at today's price and protects against infla-
tion." Blasberg states, "There are no two funeral plans the same. Increasingly, the Chapel handles special requests such as "Personalized Funerals" that celebrate the life of the person. In a matter of speaking, death is a fact of life and in those chal-
lenging moments you want a family there to comfort you, to love, grieve, and remember your spirit. "LET OUR FAMILY TREAT YOUR FAMILY LIKE OUR OWN." Levitt Weinstein, Blasberg Rubin-Zilbert Funeral Homes and Beth David Memorial Gardens and Chapels.

Food Truck Friday at Laurenzo’s
Blustein
From Page 1A ––––––––––––––––––––
This week is Thanksgiving, and not only that, the usual “Black Friday” has now officially been pushed back in some places to include late Thursday night. The jockeying to get consumers in the stores this weekend to officially kickoff the holiday shopping season has now reached a fever pitch with every major retailer trying to get an advantage. When Black Friday first began, it was about opening at 6 in the morning and giving things away to entice shoppers to get up early after a day of filling up on those Thanksgiving favorites. Now, 6 a.m. means you missed everything, and thatʼs why this shopping season will certainly bring what appears to be a solid next five to six months, and thatʼs a great thing. With the housing market and the current unemployment the way it is, anything that would appear to be positive is worth gravitating towards, and when many of the major stores say they are going to open at 12 midnight on Friday, you head there in hopes of getting a bargain and receiving a free gift. While you have a delicious meal on Thursday, remember to plan your Black Friday attack, and also make sure that your shopping day/weekend includes a trip to many of our local business, which includes the Mardi Gras Flea Market. This is about the time they
start kicking it up - with more vendors - offering tremendous shopping. A few years back, I had the chance to experience early shopping. While I must admit, I am not a very good shopper, often opting to get what I need and leave, I did arrive at 5 a.m. and got some good bargains, but also got a bunch of things for free. I like free! GULFSTREAM TO THE RESCUE At a time when good news is always welcome, we are now looking at something we talked about last spring, when Gulfstream Park
Racing and Casino was awarded that racing date that would start on December 3rd - instead of the first week of January. Thatʼs huge because we will now have those racing fans down for the holidays, which is important for the local businesses. Next week, we will take a look at the upcoming racing season - including exciting holiday racing cards, which will be great for everyone at the impressive Village at Gulfstream Park. Speaking of the Village at Gulfstream Park, the Holiday Lights show, a huge hit last year, is also ready to get going.

Hallandale Beach Walmart comes through in time for Thanksgiving
Stephen Cummings
It is the time of the year where families gather at their home and rejoice giving thanks for their blessings. In the current slumping economy where layoffs and cutbacks seem to becoming the norm within the corporate culture, many people have to tighten their belts and gauge their expenditures very carefully. As charitable organizations such as the Kiwanis Club of Hallandale Beach are besieged with requests for donations, our ability to provide turkeys at Thanksgiving was certainly hampered this year as our fundraising efforts fell short of our goal. We were on the verge of being unable to make our annual turkey donations

to the Hallandale Elementary School, Gulfstream Middle School and Hallandale High School until we were rescued. Many thanks to our Knight in shining armor, Walmart. Kiwanis member Joe Kessel who served two terms as our Club President and was the recent recipient of the prestigious Ralph Davis Award from Kiwanis International for delivering extraordinary service to the community approached Walmart Store Manager Stan Hudson with our dilemma and fi-

nancial constraints. Walmart, like any other merchant suffers from rising food prices and con-
sumers who have less purchasing power, but Hudson made it possible for our club to deliver
eighty birds into the community to impoverished families through the generosity of his employer. Stan Hudson is a leader by example as he showed no reluctance along with his assistant manager, Paul rolling up their sleeves and scanning all the birds at the checkout counter and helping us roll the palette jack outside to our truck. A great display of participative management. By the way, the Hallandale Beach Walmart greatly assists the Hallandale Beach Police Athletic League with their annual
fundraiser Shop With A Cop that allows for 120 children to buy presents for Christmas through the joint efforts of Walmart and the Hallandale Beach Police Department and subsidizes the local Lionʼs Club each year with their Back To School event each year providing a wide variety of school supplies to needy children. If you have not recently visited the Hallandale Beach Walmart, you will be astonished by the renovations. A brand new sparkling 30,000 square foot area has been built offering a fully stocked deli counter, a wide assortment of meats and poultry, a huge bakery and refrigerators stocked with a complete dairy. May your holiday be replete with good health and blessings and a special thanks to our local Walmart for making this Thanksgiving a reality for many deserving families. Stephen P. Cummings is a Past LT. Governor with Kiwanis International and can be reached at 954-907-2392.

AVOID JOINT REPLACEMENT SURGERY WITH THE ARP WAVE
Try our painless, non-invasive technique that ends chronic pain
Chronic pain is debilitating, and quickly erodes quality of life. Now, a new medical technology allows many patients suffering from back or joint pain to avoid surgery and return to the activities and lifestyles they enjoyed previously. The ARP (Accelerated Recovery Performance) Wave is a noninvasive method of delivering a pioneering new branch of neurological soft tissue medicine that teaches the body to avoid nonproductive compensation patterns that cause pain, and retrains it to allow the positive progression of treatment that accelerates recovery and restores a painfree lifestyle. The treatment works on all joint problems, tears, sprains, fractures and repetitive injuries such as carpel tunnel. It has been used by thousands of people, including many professional athletes such as Boston Bruins goaltender Tim Thomas.
ARP Wave inventor Denis Thompson helps patients avoid hip and knee replacements and provide rapid alternative recovery methods at the Wellco Care ARP Clinic in Hallandale Beach.
INTRODUCING THE ARP CLINIC AVOID SURGERY AND END PAIN If you have been told you need surgery or have chronic pain, we can help! Read below – to learn about a new, noninvasive neurological soft tissue medicine treatment used by professional athletes, that is now available to the general public.
The ARP Wave can help patients avoid hip and knee replacements and provide rapid alternative recovery methods. It is now available for the first time at the Wellco Care ARP Clinic in
TESTIMONIALS For more testimonials, visit our Website: www.arpwaveclinic.com I had muscle pain in my lower back for years. I spent, and my insurance companies have spent, thousands of dollars by treating the pain (symptom) and not the injury (the muscles in my leg). My good friend and neighbor, a former NHL player and now agent, introduced me to ARP Wave. In one session last week, they identified the problem as a strained ligament in my left ankle By taping together my fibula and tibia (a job my injured ligament used to do) and using ARP Wave I am better distributing my body weight and am largely muscular pain free. I am looking forward to a summer at the cabin, doing all the things I used to do, and have not done recently. -- Tom Finnegan [Indianapolis Colts Pro Bowl Defensive Dwight] Freeney is also using a device called ARP that is similar to a stem device to move the blood supply to the damaged ankle. The ARP operates differently from normal stem devices, but ARP has helped him in past years recover quickly from groin and hamstring pulls. -- Information from ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter, ESPN.com senior writer John Clayton and The Associated Press was used in this report. After 5 years and 15 doctors and no results, I came here and virtually am now muscle pain free. It's nice to feel good again. Randy Hebrink, 48, Low Back, Neck, Rib, Shoulder Pain -- Renville, MN I think the treatment is phenomenal. I came out of the University of Minnesota and was told I'd never play baseball again because of reconstructive surgery on my left wrist and with Ben and the ARP I haven't had any trouble since. That along with my ankle this spring, they said I'd be out 6 weeks, I wasn't even out a week and a half and I didn't miss any games. I'm a walking case for Ben, but he's helped me every time. Kevin Ericcson, 22, Wrist Surgery, Ankle Sprain - Minneapolis, MN
Hallandale Beach. It is also possible for patients to be treated in their own homes.
A TOTALLY NEW CONCEPT “This is a totally new concept in health care delivery,” says ARP Wave inventor Denis Thompson of Minneapolis, MN. “All other branches of soft tissue medicine work on the area where symptoms manifest themselves. But thatʼs not the source of the pain. Ours works where your symptoms begin.” Pain from joint problems and injuries are the result of muscles improperly absorbing force. To try to avoid the pain, the brain turns to the muscles for protection. “The muscles react to the signals from the brain by trying to eliminate the pain through abnormal contractions and movements,” Thompson says. “When this happens, the muscles no longer absorb force correctly. This, in turn, results in inappropriate compensation patterns that become imprinted in muscles and continue to cause pain.”
THE ARP WAVE The painless, noninvasive ARP Wave treatment begins with a technician placing an electrode on the patientʼs skin, where it identifies the signals being sent by the nervous system. “It is first a discovery tool,” Thompson explains.
“By using it, we find the neurological disconnect that is causing the inability of the muscles to absorb force that results in pain. Wherever there has been trauma, there is inflammation and scar tissue, and thatʼs the area we concentrate on.”
QUICK RECOVERY Once the source of the pain is correctly identified, treatment begins. The ARP Wave method consists of a series of painless treatments, usually about 10 of them, that are each about 20 minutes long. During the treatment, the Wave sends an electrical signal mimicking what the body should normally send on its own to direct force back to the muscles instead of to the joints, and to stimulate the muscles to correctly absorb shock again. “In other words, we retrain the muscles to do what theyʼre supposed to do,” Thompson says. Most patients are able to quickly return to activities they might not have been able to do for years. “Our goal is to help patients avoid surgery, as well as to replace time-consuming recovery methods like rest, ice and compression,” Thompson says. “ Accelerated Recovery Performance is, quite simply, a faster way to help the body heal.” HOW IT WORKS
DOES ARP SOUND TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE? Let us prove it to you! Bring this coupon in for a FREE treatment worth $300! It costs you nothing to try ARP. So don't wait any longer. Call us today so we can help you feel better fast. The ARP Wave works like this: First, it eliminates imprinting by the brain of nonproductive compensation patterns that cause the muscles to perform ineffectively, resulting in pain. The sooner the patient receives the treatment, the better. “By creating new pathways of communication between the brain and the muscles and reestablishing normal motor patterns early on, we can eliminate the imprinting more quickly,” Thompson says. Second, the treatment decreases swelling and inflammation by increasing blood circulation to the affected joint and limb. “This allows the restoration of mobility so the patient can get back to his or her normal activities and live an active lifestyle again,” Thompson says. The cost is far less than surgery, and patients avoid the long recovery times and possible side effects associated with surgery. “The ARP Wave helps people feel better fast,” Thompson says. “Our method is not alternative medicine. It is a new, effective form of traditional medicine.”
VIRTUAL CLINICS To ensure precise and effective treatment, technicians at ARP Wave clinics work through computerized technology directly with the expert staff at Minneapolis headquarters. South Florida patients can come to the Hallandale Beach clinic, or technicians can go to their homes to do the diagnosis and deliver the treatments. “One treatment is all it takes to prove it helps,” Thompson says. “Once you experience it, youʼll know it works.”

What you should know if you always 'gotta go'
OVERACTIVE BLADDER?
(ARA) - Do you constantly feel like you "gotta go"? When you leave the house, do you always look where the nearest bathroom is, just in case? Bladder control problems are more common than you might think. Having an Overactive Bladder can affect your quality of life, and 16 percent of the adult population, or about 33 million people, have this condition, according to the Journal of Urology. People with an Overactive Bladder, or OAB, often experience: 1. High urinary frequency: More than eight times in a 24 hour period 2. Urinary urgency: A strong, compelling need to urinate that cannot be delayed 3. Urge incontinence: Wetting accidents which occur before reaching a toilet If you have bladder control issues, don't let embarrassment stand in the way of finding a
solution. After talking with a doctor, most people start with conservative therapies. For example, doing exercises like kegels to strengthen the pelvic floor muscle. Other first-step treatment options might include dietary modification, bladder training programs and prescription medication. Unfortunately, conservative therapies fail up to 80 percent of people. Prescription medications are not an option for many people, and for others, they may experience unwanted side effects and stop taking them altogether. Exercise and diet modification can be strict and require a timely commitment. Furthermore, the results might not live up to what patients are hoping for. Treatments like surgery work, but if you don't want to go the invasive route, there is one more option to consider.
Bladder function is regulated by a group of nerves at the base of the spine called the sacral nerve plexus. By stimulating these nerves through gentle electrical impulses, you can gain better control of your bladder. Posterior Tibial Nerve Stimulation, otherwise known as PTNS, is a non-drug, non-surgical therapy that is helping many people with OAB take control. The Urgent PC Neuromodulation System provides this lowrisk treatment by indirectly stimulating the nerves responsible for bladder function using a nerve in your lower leg. Up to 80 percent of people who get PTNS have significant improvement in their bladder control symptoms, even when other treatment options have failed them in the past. To get an Urgent PC treatment, you visit a clinician's office. During treatment you will
After decades of saving lives, professional Ira Mogitz will be honored
AVENTURA – After 43 years of dedication, service and deep commitment to the people of Israel, Ira Mogitz will be recognized by having his named inscribed on the doors of a fully equipped lifesaving Magen David Adom ambulance by longtime supporter Ilsa Rooz. Mogitz has worked as the Development Director for the Southeast Region of American Friends of Magen David Adom (AFMDA) for 23 years, and previously worked for the Greater Miami Jewish Federation and in New York for United Jewish Appeal. “In all my years in Jewish communal service, this is a first, having a lay person honor a campaign professional for their service in such a meaningful way,” said Rabbi Larry Schuval, President of the AFMDA Southeast Region Board of Directors. The ambulance will be on display and dedicated during the annual Diamond Circle Chanuka Party at Aventura Turnberry Jewish Center on Sunday, December 18, before being shipped to save lives in Israel. The party will begin at 6pm with cocktails followed by dinner and dancing and lighting the menorah. “At a time when Iran is advocating the destruction of Israel and could soon possess a nuclear bomb, when Hamas refuses to acknowledge Israelʼs right to exist and Hezbollah remains a deadly threat, Ilsa Roozʼs dedicating of a lifesaving ambulance to the people of Israel in my honor is the greatest mitzvah a Jew can perform,” said Ira Mogitz, Development Director of American Friends of Magen David Adom (AFMDA). “People will be walking the streets of Israel alive and alleviated from pain and suffering because of Ilsaʼs gift of life. I want to thank Ilsa for this blessing.” All proceeds from the Diamond Circle Chanuka party will benefit American Friends of Magen David Adom (AFMDA), which supports the life saving efforts of Magen David Adom (MDA), providing Israel’s emergency medical needs including disaster, ambulance and blood services. Your generosity allows us to continue to help save lives in Israel. For more information or to make reservations or a donation, call 954-457-9766.
sit with your foot elevated. This allows the clinician to stimulate the area near your tibial nerve using a very thin needle temporarily placed in your ankle. Impulses travel along your leg to the nerves in your pelvis that control bladder function. What does a PTNS treatment feel like? Most people simply feel a mild tingling sensation in their foot or ankle during treatment. You will receive an initial series of 12 treatments for 30 minutes each, typically scheduled a week apart. After the initial 12 treatments, you may only need occasional treatments or none at all. Urinary incontinence may be caused by a number of things. For many, it could be a normal part of the aging process. For some women, pregnancy and childbirth are the cause. Men may experience OAB due to
prostate surgery. Injury, chronic disease and obesity are also causes. No matter what the reason, there
likely is a solution for you. For more information, visit www.urgentpcinfo.com.

Tips for Independent Living After 70
(NewsUSA) - You love your home and don't want to leave it, but your children are concerned and keep mentioning assisted living. So, how can you maintain your independence while assuring your kids that you're fine on your own? Many people are capable of living on their own in their seventies and beyond -- with a
few small adjustments to their lifestyles and living areas. Here are some suggestions: * Get prescription medications without leaving your home. Ordering medications through a mail service or online pharmacy can save you time and money, as well as help you avoid runs to the pharmacy. Just make sure that you receive medications from
a reputable drugstore. Look for one that's located in the U.S., requires prescriptions and is licensed by its state's board of pharmacy. Your local drug store may also allow you to order online. * Get meals delivered. If shopping and cooking become a struggle, fresh-made meals delivered to your door can help you get affordable,
nutritious food without relying on a caretaker. One service, Mom's Meals, can deliver to any location, from a city apartment to an isolated farmhouse, and offers personal attention on the phone. The company crafts dishes to please every palate and can accommodate diabetics and vegetarians, as well as others with special di-
etary needs. Special packaging ensures that meals, which range from mini pancakes with an omelet and turkey sausage to meat lasagna, remain fresh in the fridge for up to two weeks. Visit www.momsmeals.co m or call 866-9716667 to speak with a personal representative. * Make homes safer. Certain changes to the
home can make it safer and more comfortable to navigate, such as installing hand grips in the bathroom to lend extra support. Door knobs can be replaced with levers, and cabinets and drawers can be given larger handles. Loose carpeting should be fixed, and clutter should be removed, as both can easily cause falls.
New bike sharing system coming to Hollywood
HOLLYWOOD - As South Florida winter rolls around so will the newest form of public transportation roll into the downtown and beach areas of the City of Hollywood. Debuting December 14, 2011, Broward B-cycle, a bike sharing system serving as an alternative mode of public transportation, will feature cruiser-style blue bicycles at local kiosks (Bstations) around town. B-cycles are equipped with a GPS system that tracks mileage, calories burned and carbon offsets. Riders can monitor their personal fitness, see their contributions to local green efforts and connect with other users within the B-cycle community online. To access a bike, residents and tourists can either register online or use the self-service B-stations. At the B-stations, riders swipe a credit card to remove a bike from the rack. When riders are done with the bike, they return it to the same or another B-station around the city. Other B-stations are available for use beginning December 14 in Fort Lauderdale and Pompano Beach. Broward County Commissioner Kristin Jacobs spearheaded the initiative to bring bike sharing to Broward County as a way for people to have the benefit of bicycle use while providing an environmentally sustainable and inexpensive complement to the local transit system. The system complements the City of Hollywoodʼs ongoing efforts to offer residents and tourists alike a more sustainable life-style providing personal health benefits, environmental benefits, and community/business benefits. Bike sharing reduces travel costs, travel time and travel hassles. It also increases personal fitness levels and boosts positive stress. A short, four-mile bike trip keeps about 15 pounds of pollutants out of the air; the average person loses 13 pounds the first year of commuting by bike; and commuting by bike helps reduce the five billion gallons of fuel wasted every year from vehicular idling. To show support for the two-wheel revolution starting in Hollywood, residents are encouraged to attend the free launch event on December 14, 2011. The event will take place at the

Hallandale Beach Branch Library December schedule
B-cycles are equipped with a GPS system that tracks mileage, calories burned and carbon offsets. Maurice Connell Parking Garage on Johnson Street, beginning at 10 a.m. The launch event will feature a ceremonial ride of the new bicycles along the Broadwalk and special event discounts for people interested in purchasing an annual membership. With an annual membership or a day/week pass, people can check out bicycles at any of the B-station located in Broward County. Hollywood B-stations will be located at City Hall, ArtsPark at Young Circle, Nevada Street Parking Lot, Johnson Street and Broadwalk at Jefferson Street. Users must be 18 years or older with a valid credit card. B-cycle is a partnership among Trek Bicycle, Crispin Porter + Bogusky and Humana, one of Floridaʼs leading health care companies providing insurance products and health and wellness services based on an integrated approach to lifelong well-being. MAUTNER DENTISTRY TREATS APNEA
“I am interested in treating the whole patient and it would be a shame if all I did was fillings and cleanings. I feel it is very important to be knowledgeable of sleep apnea and is part of our patient’s questionnaire,” Dr. Mark Mautner said.
PEMBROKE PINES - As a general and family dentist, Dr. Mark Mautner has successfully been treating snoring and sleep apnea with an oral appliance for 18 years. “I am interested in treating the whole patient and it would be a shame if all I did was fillings and cleanings. I feel it is very important to be knowledgeable of sleep apnea and is part of our patientʼs questionnaire,” Dr. Mautner said.
WHAT IS APNEA Imagine you're trying to drink a rootbeer float through a straw and the end of the straw gets stuck in the ice cream. When you try to suck through the straw the straw collapses and the harder you suck on the straw, the more the straw collapses. Well, that is how sleep apnea feels and when it occurs, an individualʼs breathing stops intermittently during sleep; sometimes hundreds of times during the night and often for a minute or longer per episode. The brain briefly triggers arousal in order for breathing to resume often resulting in a fragmented and poor quality of sleep. When a person has

a long apneic episode, it can be an asphyxiating feeling. One moment youʼre sleeping and the next youʼre waking up suddenly in a panic with gasping, snorting, rapid breathing and a heavy heart rate. Apnea can occur at any age, from a marathon runner in top physical condition to an obese person with a 20 inch neck. Symptoms of apnea include excessive day time sleepiness and fatigue. Risk factors for snoring and obstruction sleep apnea include obesity, cigarette smoking, snoring, and increase with age. If untreated, the
health condition can lead to increased blood pressure, depression and anxiety.
TREATMENTS An ENT, a pulmonologist or any physician may recommend a patient to be tested in an overnight sleep center to determine if they actually have obstructive sleep apnea. The doctor conducts a test called Polysomnography (PSG) where the patient is hooked up to sensors and an exact diagnosis is performed. ORAL SLEEP APPLIANCE The gold standard for years for persons with sleep apnea has
Dr. Mark Mautner’s points out to his patients that if Sleep Apnea is untreated, the health condition can lead to increased blood pressure, depression and anxiety.
been the CPAP mask. The breathing machine is effective but is only about 30 percent compliant. Either individuals canʼt wear the mask or tend not to wear the mask. “When I ask an apneaic patient if they wear the CPAP mask and they reply, ʻno, it sits in my closet,ʼ I tell the patient, that they need to continue the treatment; as a result, I recommend an oral sleep appliance,” Dr. Mautner said. Advanced in streamline design, the oral appliance is custom fitted, made from plastic and are comfortable wearing when youʼre going to sleep. The oral appliance fits over the teeth and a guide brings the lower jaw forward and holds the tongue muscle in place thus opening up the air passage. Many patients have found the oral appliance therapy a more successful alternative to the CPAP mask. Professionally treating snoring and sleep apnea improves social relationships and your relationship with your sleeping partner will certainly be improved by treating your snoring problem. WHAT TO EXPECT “I recommend to my patients the SomnoMed sleep apnea
appliance because it has an overall success rate of 80-90 %. The person has more freedom and can drink water or talk on the phone. This oral appliance is comfortable and will certainly not interfere with a coupleʼs enjoyment compared to a CPAP breathing machine,” Dr. Mautner said. The Sleep Disorder Dental Center is pleased to announce
that more than 40 patients per month are successfully fitted with the sleep apnea oral appliance. “I called one of my patients recently fitted with the SomnoMed sleep apnea appliance and I reached his wife and she said, ʻyouʼre the doctor that saved our marriage!ʼ It was because the husband snored so badly, the couple had slept in separate bedrooms for the last 15 years.” Dr. Mautner is a national and international speaker having lectured about snoring and sleep apnea in Singapore, Israel, Netherlands and Belgium. Memberships include: The East Coast District Dental Society, Florida Dental Association, American Dental Association, Academy of General Dentistry, American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine, American Academy of Sleep Medicine and is a visiting specialist in Obstructive Sleep Apnea at Ocean Reef, Key Largo.
No matter what the question may be, the staff at Sleep Disorder Dental Center can help you through the process when dealing with Sleep Apnea.
