Helen Dopp has always been someone who has faced things head on; so when she was told that she had cataracts in both eyes, there was never a hesitation.

Unlike many of us who suffer from problems with our eyes from our youth, this Dallas, Tx. area resident started to wear glasses in her 20s - instead of having to battle those awkward years in grade school and high school. But things would soon catch up.

As a mother who worked much of her adult life, this is a 74-year-old who has never slowed down. She still

works, remains active socially and is indeed someone who has made the most of her time on this earth.

The face of Hallandale Beach will change As Michele Lazarow wins another term, newcomer Annabelle Taub will now have her chance to make an impact on a city that has been divided

By Mayor Joy Cooper Hallandale Beach - Well, the voters have spoken.

It is no surprise that the outcome is not what I would like to see in our city. It seems that our Vice Mayor Bill Julian could not overcome all the negative press he received over the voice recording of his private discussion over the Diplomat. It is a true loss for our city. He has always worked hard for the underserved.

The proof of this commitment was the strong vote he received from the west side of our community.

Ironically, this is the area where Annabelle Taub now lives and must remain or at least in Hallandale Beach. Her mom has lived there and she recently changed her driver’s license to that address. If she is independent, it will soon be told. She will now be making decisions that impact a community where she truly has had little, if any involvement until this election. I will give her credit that she worked extremely hard going door to door. Bill just recovered from surgery and the loss of his mother. You need to do everything to win elections, it cannot be just one thing.

This election is over, but there are still ongoing investigations in the State Attorney’s office, Office of Inspector General’s Office and the FDLE. From what I understand, the Ethics Matter Campaign has had complaints filed against it and others will or have been filed. It is a shame that this has happened to our City. I do respect the will of the voters, and the question now becomes, what will the future look like?

I will make some predictions that are obvious to those that follow our City. People do not realize what

will take place, our City Manager and City Attorney will be fired. This will cost every taxpayer and result in possible lawsuits. It will be interesting as to who applies to run our day to day operations with all that has taken place. The other impacts will be to all of our directors. Most City Managers will hire their own people in administrative positions. We do have a great staff and I do hope that we look within, only time will tell.

Now that Sanders and I will be the minority vote, our CRA will be moved to outside control which is not the best model. Our Community Benefit Program insuring your tax payer dollars stay here in our City and holds developers accountable to hire locally and will be gutted. This will be terrible for our local businesses and residents looking for work. Forget about the many grant programs that have helped our schools and many non-profits.

I am sure most, if not all of our protocol manual will be changed when it comes to our meetings and advisory boards. It will be interesting to chair a meeting that currently is a mess due to hostile behaviors and people that refuse to abide by Robert's Rules. As the Mayor and chair, I do have the obligation to run the meetings and anyone that has had to run a formal meeting can only understand. I do serve at the pleasure of the voters and not the commission, so I will continue to work hard for our City.

It will be interesting to see what programs and services will be cut this budget. I am very concerned about this, as it will have a direct impact on the quality of life in our City. The penny tax did not pass, so we

are solely dependent on property tax and little shared revenue from the state. We had two commissioners that voted no on the budget without offering true and realistic cuts. I am hoping that the commission continues to implement our security measure that were approved with this budget. The citywide security cameras may now be at risk.

There are some good things that have been put in place that will ensure our parks get built. The Go Bond cannot be reversed as the money has been bonded. I just hope, now they will be under budget and on time. This will be dependent on City Management that will now be in flux.

As for Alex Lewy. He did what he could do to campaign while trying to work full time. He had limited time to go door to door. He had experience and a record as a commissioner, but with a three way race, it was difficult to win. I hope he reconsiders another run in 2018.

As I have told many voters that were disappointed in this outcome; our great City has been around for over 85 plus years! It has seen its ups and downs. I do hope that considering the changes, we remain the progressive, innovative community we have been over the past years.

We have worked to become One Hallandale, we need to work to keep it One Hallandale, no matter what our differences are. The only way to do that is to hear from you, our residents.

In closing, I would like to congratulate all the voters that participated in the process. God Bless our City!!

No more glasses after 50 years for Texas Helen Dopp!

Because she can joke about it now, it’s really who Helen Dopp is. She is a humorous individual who loves life and can joke about the little things. But when it came to her eyesight, a trip to Florida to visit her daughter, may have been planned all along.

While visiting her daughter in Fort Lauderdale, the name Dr. Stanley Braverman came up in conversation. It was just a coincidence, but one that has impacted her life.

“We had been talking about me having cataracts, and my daughter’s friend from church immediately said that there was nobody better than Dr. Braverman,” Dopp recalled. “Being from Texas, my optometrist had some people back home in mind, but when we started to look at Dr. Braverman, and how many had talked about his work and their experience, I got excited.”

What Are Cataracts?

A cataract is formed when the natural lens of the eye, responsible for focusing light and producing sharp images, becomes cloudy and hardens, resulting in a loss of visual function. The lens of the eye is clear at birth but is one of the first parts of the body to show the effects of aging. A cataract is painless and usually develops gradually over several months or years. The onset of a cataract in one or both eyes may cause decreased night vision, impaired depth perception, and increased color distortion.

Cataracts are the leading cause of vision loss among adults age 55 and older.

In fact, poor vision from cataracts affects 60 percent of all adults over age 60.

However, cataracts also can result from injury, heredity, or medications, so they can affect people of all ages.

Understanding that no two conditions or patients are the same, Dr. Braverman analyzes the patient’s symptoms, performs a comprehensive eye exam, and may test for glare disability and contrast sensitivity before making a diagnosis.

Broward College Announces Three New Faculty-Led Study Abroad Programs Fort Lauderdale – Broward College has announced three new study abroad locations for 2017, opening the door for travel to exotic destinations for immerse cultural experiences which broaden academic horizons. of us down the road - it was the local elections that really made all of us think and pay more attention to how decisions made during this process would impact us - now!

As many failed to really listen to substance and what their vote would truly mean, the residents spoke - and for good or bad - we all have to live with the decisions made, and that’s what bothers so many in our communities that cast their votes during this important time.

“The thing that really gets me about the entire process is it becomes a popularity contest,” said Hallandale Beach resident Claire PaschalMiller. “I have spoken with neighbors and they didn’t know why they were voting for this candidate or that candidate and in reality - they were not informed on the issues.”

What has become the cloud that hangs over the heads of so many voters - whether it be in Hallandale Beach, Hollywood, Aventura, North Miami Beach and Dania Beach - is that many really do not explore issues, voting records and other things that have occupied the presidential campaigns since the candidates were announced. The majority wouldn’t know one candidate from the next unless they were lobbied to vote for them.

In reality, many do not

know their local officials and in so many cases residents were voting on what they’ve been told by friends and neighbors and not what they have researched for themselves. That is a huge problem. One that the savvy politicians have already found out that they control.

“As I was standing in line last week to early vote, I struck up a conversation with a fellow Hollywood resident,” Noel Ramirez explained.

“As we talked about the race for the White House, the conversation shifted locally. I was blown away how little this person knew about the officials and some of the vital issues that were on the ballot. That is crazy, but that happens all over and ends up hurting the city.”

In smaller communities, the chances of being influenced are a lot easier. Tight-knit clicks can sway opinion. It happens all the time. That is why taxpayers should always take the time know candidates and understand issues and their voting record. Many would be shocked.

Vice Bill Julian Is Out In Hallandale Beach There is no getting around the fact that this is a community - that will be fighting an uphill battle for a long time.

Noel Ramirez, Hollywood resident The overwhelming negatives that have come from the commission for the past decade boiled over as one of the most popular figures in the city, Vice Mayor Bill Julian, was not reelected in favor of a first time candidate with no political experience. Julian, who campaigned while under investigation

by Broward prosecutors, lost to Anabelle Taub.

During the summer, Channel 10 broke a story that contained a recording of Julian making comments related to his actions in favor of a condo and hotel project.

In the phone call — which Julian didn’t know was being recorded — Julian is heard saying that a lawyer for the developer promised him hundreds of campaign workers and that the developers would buy a van for his pet charity, a local food bank. That was one of a few things that held him back during this election.

The election process

also saw City Commissioner Michele Lazarow defeated former City Commissioner Alexander Lewy to keep her seat that she held the past four years.

Josh Levy is Hollywood’s New Mayor Another political newcomer, Josh Levy, a lifelong resident of Hollywood, won the seat for Mayor over veteran politicians Sen. Eleanor Sobel and former Dustrict 1 commissioner Patricia Asseff.

Levy had easily been the most visible candidate, showing residents that he was indeed the person for the job. Former Mayor Peter Bober had fully endorsed him for the position.

As a past member of the city’s planning and development board and past president of the Hollywood Hills Civic Association, Levy promised to “revitalize the city” and “invest in environmental sustainability.”

Hollywood also chose commissioners for four seats. Debra Case battled Stacey Kotzen for Seat 1. Incumbents Peter Hernandez, Dick Blattner and Linda Sherwood held on to their seats.

Tamara James Is The New Mayor In Dania Beach Former University of and South Miami Broward High graduate Tamara James is best known for her work on the basketball court. But on Tuesday night, Dania Beach residents elevated the 32-year-old lifelong resident to its highest position.

James scored enough votes in the at-large election to take the spot as of Broward mayor County’s oldest city.

Voters also chose business owner Bill Harris and incumbent Chickie Brandimarte to serve on the five-member board.

Marco Salvino, Dania’s mayor since win-

ning office in 2014, will remain on the board as a commissioner. His term ends in 2018.

Aventura Fills Lone Seat Besides voting for president and a few issues, this was a light voting cycle at the polls in Aventura - where Gladys Mesrahi defeated Joshua Mandall for Seat 5.

Medical Marijuana Passes Easily As patients struggling with many life-altering diseases have been searching for some kind of relief, Floiridians - especially in south Florida spoke loud and clear about passing Amendment 2 that would allow these patients to use marijuana.

The issue came close to passing a few years back, and those who had fought hard to have it passed, made sure that there would be no doubt this time around.

Opponents claiming that pot should NOT be classified as medical are still fighting, but will lose this round.

There are also others who want to see - by 2020 - marijuana passed statewide for recreational use, citing that the money that the herb brings in could be a huge boost to the economy.

Hollywood - In celebration of America Recycles Day, the City of Hollywood’s RewardsFor-Recycling partner, Recycling Perks, in partnership with the Hollywood’s Department of Public Works, will have a "Perks Booth" at several events in Hollywood.

Recycling Perks will be at Funtastic Friday on November 11, 2016 from

Volunteers Needed to Help Paint Sea Art Banners to Create Community Art in City of Hollywood Parks Volunteers are needed to help recycle outdated event banners into community art with murals featuring scenes from the sea using glow in the dark paint on Sun-

“Glow in the Dark Sea Art” was selected as the winning community project during the Vision Hollywood 2020 Community Forum. Kyle Harris from Harris Art Studio in Hollywood came up with the project to add community created art to parks within the city.

Over the past several months the concept has developed into recycling weather resistant event banners by painting them with scenes from the sea. The banners will then be hung at various parks and recreation facilities throughout the City to enliven these spaces with underwater scenes that celebrate Hollywood’s coastal location.

No professional painting experience is necessary and all ages and talents are welcome. If you would like to volunteer, please call Harris Art Studio at 781.308.1379.

Taking a break from the same old burger recipes You’ll be blown away by the delicious alternatives to beef and fowl portions (about 1/3 cup mixture per portion), shaping each into a 3-inch patty.

Heat remaining 2 tablespoons oil in a large nonstick skillet over medium-high heat. Add patties to pan; reduce heat to medium, and cook 4 minutes or until bottom edges are browned. Carefully turn patties over; cook 3 minutes or until bottom edges are done.

You don’t have to be a vegetarian to fall in love with a meatless burger. Besides being good for you and giving you a break from beef and fowl, they taste great.

Veggie Burger • 1 cup canned chickpeas • (garbanzo beans), rinsed and drained • 1 cup chopped fresh cilantro • 1/2 cup coarsely chopped carrot • 1 teaspoon Garam Masala • 1 teaspoon amchur powder • 1 1/4 teaspoons kosher salt • 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper • 1/4 teaspoon ground red pepper • 1 jalapeño, seeded and quartered • 2 pounds peeled red potatoes, • cut into 2-inch pieces • 1/4 cup coarsely chopped red onion • 1 cup dry breadcrumbs • 2 tablespoons extravirgin olive oil • 2 2/3 cups spinach • 4 (6-inch) whole-grain pitas, cut in half • 8 red onion slices Combine first 9 ingredients in the bowl of a food processor; process until finely chopped.

Place potatoes in a large saucepan; cover with water. Bring to a boil; cook 13 minutes. Add onion, and cook for 2 minutes or until potatoes are tender. Drain; cool 10 minutes. Place potato mixture in a large bowl; mash with a potato masher or fork. Stir in chickpea mixture and breadcrumbs; cover and chill 8 hours or overnight.

Divide potato mixture into 8 equal portions, shaping each portion into a 1/2-inch-thick patty (about 2/3 cup mixture). Heat 1 tablespoon oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add 4 patties to pan; cook 5 minutes on each side or until browned and heated through. Repeat procedure with remaining 1 tablespoon oil and 4

patties. Place 1/3 cup spinach and 1 patty in each pita half. Top each serving with 1 onion slice.

Black Bean Burger • 1 (2-ounce) hamburger bun, torn into pieces • 3 tablespoons olive oil, divided • 2 teaspoons chopped garlic • 1 (15.25-ounce) can black beans, • rinsed and drained • 1 teaspoon grated lime rind • 3/4 teaspoon chili powder • 1/2 teaspoon chopped fresh oregano • 1/4 teaspoon salt • 1 large egg, lightly beaten • 1 large egg white, lightly beaten Place bun in a food processor; process 4 times or until crumbs measure about 1 cup. Transfer to a bowl.

Combine 1 tablespoon oil, garlic, and beans in processor; pulse 8 times or until beans make a thick paste. Scrape bean mixture into bowl with breadcrumbs. Stir in rind and remaining ingredients. With moistened hands, divide bean mixture into 4 equal

Stir in remaining 3 tablespoons whole chickpeas, parsley, and remaining ingredients. With moistened hands, divide mixture into 6 equal portions (about 1/3 cup mixture per portion), shaping each into a 3-inch patty.

Hollywood Junior Chamber (Jaycees) help local families enjoy this Thanksgiving Holiday Hollywood - On November 22nd, 2016, the Greater Hollywood Junior Chamber (Hollywood Jaycees) will be delivering baskets filled with food for a full Thanksgiving dinner to approximately 150 families who are in need and live within the Greater Hollywood area.

Members of the Hollywood Jaycees have long played an active role in the Hollywood community by carrying out various philanthropic projects.

One such project is the Thanksgiving Baskets.

The Jaycees have been providing Thanksgiving meals to members of the community for many years.

However, the organization relies on the generosity of the local business community in order to continue this project. The Jaycees invite your participation by donating items such as turkeys, stuffing, vegetables, canned yams, gravy, cranberry sauce, mashed potatoes, pies, etc. to be included in the Thanksgiving baskets.

Monetary donations and gift cards will also be accepted, which will be used to purchase items listed above. You can mail them to 2930 Hollywood Blvd.

Tofu: Soft enough that even tots can safely eat it, tofu is considered by some to be a modern superfood. Packed with nutrients, calcium-enriched tofu contains more than 400 milligrams of calcium. Dr. Adler Using Laser In Battle Against Toe Fungus

According to the American Podiatric Medical Association, approximately 40% of patients visiting a podiatrist have complaints or signs of toe fungus. It may begin with tenderness or pain in the toe, developing into an unsightly thick, darkened nail, and it can spread from toe to toe. In fact, the fungus can get so out of control that it can infect the foot and ankle.

Topical treatment such as Lamisil cream usually is the first course of therapy for a mild or moderate case. However, long-term use or oral antifungal medication is not recommended due to the toxic side effects Lamisil can have on the liver. This is a special risk if a patient is taking other medications, including excessive use of Tylenol that can manifest the same hepatic damage.

Over the past few years, Dr. Charlton Adler has been following closely the application and reported results of laser therapy on fungus toenails and other podiatric and wound situations. He is pleased to announce that he now is able to add this service as a therapeutic option in his office in North Miami Beach.

“The introduction of laser in treating toe fungus has had a major impact on attacking this uncomfortable and unsightly problem,” says Dr. Adler. “I have already witnessed many success stories where patients have spent years and thousands of dollars to get rid of their nail fungus,” says Mechulon. “Depending on the patient’s general health and nail problem, it can take anywhere from one to nine treatments, but the results are there with minimum risk to the body,” he adds.

“I have wanted to offer this therapy for quite a while,” says Dr. Adler. “However, I am cautious in my approach, and I needed more proof on studies and reports.” Dr Adler adds that research shows that 80% of all toe fungus has been healed using laser therapy. “This is in contrast to topical ointments that only work 50% of the time,” says Adler, “and with topical treatment, the infection usually returns.”

Lessons Learned In Hiring A Private Aide By the daughter of an Aventura mom

Finally, I found the perfect person to look after mom, who could no longer live alone safely. Marie, the aide, was referred by another aide in mom’s building, who seemed to take great care of a very demanding neighbor who was showing signs of confusion like my mother. During the interview process, Marie demonstrated patience, attentiveness to mom’s needs, and had glowing references. I even called two of them, who were out of state, but who affirmed how good Marie was to them or their family member. What a relief! After three weeks in Florida, I finally was able to return to my family in Ohio and feel that mom was in good hands.

At first, all was fabulous. Mom said Marie helped her with showering, picking out her clothes, made small meals, and they went to dinner a lot. Mom also said Marie helped her clean out her drawers and closets, and helped her organize her things.

Then, mom began to complain that Marie moves things around, and mom cannot find them. She told Marie to keep things in one place, and that Marie raising her voice to her. I spoke to Marie, who said mom moves things around herself, and then cannot find them. I suggested that since mom can get confused, it might be best to organize things the way it would be easier for her. The next day, mom called and said her diamond ring and earrings were missing, and the $400 spare money that she has kept in the corner of her bedside table for years was also missing. I asked to speak to Marie. Mom informed me that Marie went down to the store and had not yet returned.

When I called back later, mom said Marie still had not returned and she did not know what she should do for dinner. I called Security in mom’s building. They had not seen the aide since she left in the morning. I asked them to check on mom. Feeling upset myself, I called another neighbor, asking if she could either include my mother in her dinner plans or help mom order delivery from a local restaurant, and then see to it that she had something for breakfast in the morning.

I called the Aventura police to report a possible theft, and booked an early morning flight back to Florida.

What an ordeal followed. However, at least mom was not physically harmed!

Although I had resisted going through an agency due to a slightly higher cost, I began a rapid search of getting competent help as soon as possible, calling mom’s doctors and going online. The name Always Classic Care came up several times. When I called, the staff was most professional asking about mom’s status and needs. The owner, Terry Adler, joined the conversation with more specific questions about mom’s personality and capability status, as well as my concerns and services I felt mom would need. To my surprise, once paperwork was completed with staff, Terry called me back to report she had someone very special for mom who could start later that evening or first thing in the morning. I was amazed. Well, mom hit it off with the new aide immediately, and she has now been with mom for the over a year. It definitely was a great match.

Although I had avoided going through an agency because of the slightly higher cost, it took a bad experience for me to realize the many advantages of using a home health agency or nurse registry.

Aside from dealing with professionals, home health agencies are regulated by the State of Florida. All of their healthcare workers must submit to a rigorous screening process that includes FBI fingerprinting for any history of wrong doing. A registered agency such as Always Classic Care requires a personal interview conducted by a professional staff who also scrutinize documentation of training, references and work history, and applicants are required to complete preemployment testing as to knowledge of various levels of care. Also, if there is any problem , question, personality or communication issue once the aide is assigned, the agency will get involved and make immediate changes. I found that the agency may cost a few dollars more per hour than a private hiring, but now, the cost seems minimal when compared to the open communication and peace of mind that it can bring.

New Treatment Shows Promise in Curbing Cancer Growth (NewsUSA) - An experimental anti-cancer compound significantly reduced the average tumor weight of pancreatic cancers and ovarian cancers in preliminary studies, based on data released by Propanc Health Group Corporation. In the studies, mice inoculated with tumor cells were treated with injections of PRP, a combination of two proenzymes, trypsinogen and chymotrypsinogen.

In a pancreatic cancer study, tumors treated with PRP showed 86 percent inhibition compared with controls at 26 days after treatment. In a separate ovarian cancer

Are we all ready for the Uberization of America?

Doesn't sound as warm and fuzzy as that other sobriquet -- "the sharing economy" -used to describe the Uberization of America,

21st-century economy.

Think about it: If you drive for an app-based, ride-hailing service like Uber, Lyft or Sidecar -- or maybe do stuff like fix leaky faucets, say, by signing on with TaskRabbit to connect with buyers with long to-do lists -; odds are that app-enabled "gig," as it's called, doesn't include all or some of the following: * Health benefits * Workman's comp * Social Security * Overtime * The right to unionize

does it? But that's what critics say workers are increasingly becoming thanks to a business model that's totally redefining what it means to be employed in a techenabled, service-driven,

Uber was handed a huge defeat last September when U.S. District Judge Edward Chen in San Francisco granted class-action status to a lawsuit by drivers that, according to the Wall Street Journal, "could have sweeping implications" for anyone following the same business model. The core issue is: Are those behind the wheel "independent contractors" (as Uber claims) or "employees" entitled to a wide range of costly benefits (as drivers claim)?

"It will allow thousands of Uber drivers to participate in this case (and)

challenge their misclassifications as independent contractors, as well as to attempt to recover the tips that Uber advertised to customers are included in the fare, but are not in fact distributed to the drivers," attorney Shannon Liss-Riordan, who's also representing Lyft drivers in a separate case, told the press while vowing to try to expand the suit nationwide.

Not boding well for Uber, which is planning to appeal the ruling: The California Labor Commission a few months earlier ruled that Uber driver Barbara Ann Berwick was, indeed, an employee in a claim involving expenses.

"We've always said

that all providers of ground transportation should be held to the same standard," said Gary Buffo, president of the non-profit National Limousine Association (Limo.org). "That applies to drivers' benefits, too."

And for those who think they're immune to Uberization, don't be so sure.

A Bloomberg columnist recounted the increased "buzz" around the idea of turning whitecollar work, which traditionally commands higher paychecks, into less expensive services that can be summoned as easily as a town car.

"An Uber for legal advice seems like a pretty good idea," she wrote.

Volunteers needed to serve Community Thanksgiving Luncheon For many families, volunteerism begins early. Last year, several young families turned out with children to help serve hundreds of meals to Hallandale Beach residents who were alone, or in need of friendship on Thanksgiving Day. This year, the City begins a new tradition in the spacious and modern Austin Hepburn Center, 1000 NW 8th Avenue. Volunteers are needed to help make this year another success.
